Have your say this Australia Day All of the research on happiness indicates an essential, but sometimes overlooked, element in achieving that sought after state is doing things for other people.

At the Café we are privileged to meet many people who are the unsung heroes of our town - people who work in a variety of different ways to make Kiama a better place to live.

Nominations are now open for Kiama’s 2013 Australia Day Awards, giving you the opportunity to shine a light on contributions or achievements you admire and give people the public recognition they deserve.

For example, last year Kiama’s musical impresario and regular Café-goer, Dennis Koks, was presented with the Community Arts Award. In our opinion, he should be nominated every year!

I've had the opportunity to hear Kevin play at the Cafe before at various family functions held here, and know that you'll enjoy his music. He’s a singer songwriter who has performed over 20 years throughout Australia, having just returned from touring the Outback, including playing at the iconic Birdsville and Silverton Hotels.

So get a group of your friends together and enjoy a relaxed afternoon, with a drink or two and some of our delicious bar snacks.

Help make the Field Guide to NSW Produce a reality We have just heard that our attempts to champion local food are being recognised in a new Field Guide to NSW Produce. Following the success of its beautifully designed Victorian counterpart, the Field Guide is aiming to be a comprehensive primer on regional produce and the people that grow, make and sell it.

The Guides are part of an ambitious project by a group of food idealists to create a food map of Australia to support regional farmers, small food producers and food providers. You’ve got to love people who say things like: In the name of localism and authenticity we celebrate quality regional produce, farming and a healthy life. My sentiments exactly!

The books, website, facebook page and app are designed to inform you about sustainable regional food producers and suppliers, while supporting regional food brands, events and tourism. Brimming with maps and suggested food trails, the Guide will be required reading for many of you.

The Guide is a labour of love for the people at locavored.com, with all of the researchers and writers volunteering their time and no charges being made for listings. And that is where you can come in if you feel like helping the project get off the ground.

They are looking to raise money for its production by encouraging people to pre-commit and buy a copy online. Pledges will be processed when the full amount they need is raised.

We are supporting them by promising to be a stockist - but you’ll get more value (and a warm feeling) by pledging online.

It’s hard to believe it is a year since the South Coast won the 100 Mile Challenge, and it is heartening to see the regional food momentum building on a number of fronts.

It’s a Australian romantic comedy with a twist, as it delves into intimate aspects of the everyday life of a shallow, hedonistic 20 year old man as he comes to terms with illness taking away his chances of ever having children. Last Dinner Event for 2012: Indonesia

Margaret and David from At the Movies both gave it four stars, an unusual outcome for them.

It’s set in Sydney’s inner west, so it will be down memory lane for me (and a good education for you about the way the university aged children in your life are living).

Community Gardens: Get involved Having only just lately discovered the joys of a vegetable patch (lettuce anyone?), I’m really keen to support community gardens. I’ve been reading some pretty scary things about food security in the years to come (when peak oil makes our current food production processes unworkable), and it’s time for all of us to develop our skills. And there is the important fact that food you’ve grown yourself tastes better!

Moves are afoot to develop a community garden in Beachside, but these things take time.

Kiama’s existing Community Garden, near the back of Blue Haven, is looking for new members.

The Garden grows great organic produce, which it shares between garden members.

Initially newcomers work alongside experienced members until they are familiar with the garden’s principles, then they can continue tending the garden at times to suit themselves.

We’re already more than half booked out for our Indonesian Night this month, so if you want to enjoy the delicious food of the Spice Islands without an airfare then you had better book in quick.

Saturday working bees are organised to complete identified tasks.

Not all work requires physical strength, and not all work involves gardening. People involved in the garden have a diverse range of skills and everyone is able to use their own particular abilities whether they are artistic, domestic, construction, administrative or horticultural.

Frank Moorehouse speaks Friends of Kiama Library have outdone themselves again, with acclaimed Australian writer, and Nowra boy, Frank Moorhouse coming to town on Saturday 3 November to talk about Cold Light, the final book in his League of Nations’ Edith trilogy.

Intriguingly, according to Wikipedia (so it must be true), “Early in his career he committed himself to a philosophy of personal candour stating that there was no question a person could ask of him to which we would not try to give an honest answer.” So get your thinking caps on to make question time memorable.

Kiama in Koncert No, it isn’t a typo - just a whole lot of fun in store at a concert to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Kiama Probus Men’s Choir. Also featuring The Divas and Kiama Community of Public School Choirs.

Details: Sunday 18 November, 2pm, Kiama Pavilion. Entry by gold coin includes tea and coffee at intermission.

Put dibs on the date Nothing must be more frustrating than organising an event and then finding out that another community event clashes with it. To avoid this problem, Kiama Tourism has offered to help by maintaining a central register of events. So check with them as your starting point next time.

If you haven’t already ‘liked’ us on facebook then we’d love you to do so. It’s a great way to keep in touch with what’s happening and fits in with our focus on community.

I’m always interested to see what hits a nerve with people and gets them to react to a post.

For example, I was amazed by how many people are obsessed with Rocky Road. Pictures of our latest batch really got people talking.

But the biggest reaction we ever got was from a post ranting against our Woolworths having a local food festival that didn’t actually include any food from our region.

Noticeboard A tip for summer from Roz Roz from The Salon on Tingira would like to thank her Beachside clients for your continued support of her rejuvenated hairdressing salon.

She’d also like to say that she hopes you are planning to be sun savvy with your hair over the coming swimming season, as salt water, minerals and chlorine are the biggest destroyers of hair strength and contribute to colour fading in a big way.

She’s been surprised Australians aren’t as aware of this as women in Europe. As a measure of her concern, she is offering a shampoo that removes the nasties from your hair, Matrix Alternative Action, at $24.95 over the summer—$5 below the recommended retail.
