My Community Grants fund two local projects The Kiama LGA has scored the majority of the Kiama Electorate funding under the My Community Grants program. Gerringong Lions Rugby League Club was successful in gaining $187,000 of the total $282,000 allocated to our State electorate, with the Minnamurra Quarry Pump Track initiative being awarded $50,000. A new Meals on Wheels kitchen at Bommaderry was the only project outside of the Kiama LGA to receive funding, which was awarded through a system of popular voting. The funding, and what they have put aside, will allow the Lions to complete the renovation and extension of their club house complex. “We got the original DA through in 2012 and we’ve been chipping away at it since then,” says President Daryl Hobbs. “We are hoping it will be finished by the middle of next year.” He says a lot of voluntary labour and mates rates by
professional builders have kept down the costs of the project so far. “It is an investment in the future of Gerringong, not just our rugby league club, as it will be of benefit to the whole community to have a place to gather. “It is already a community centre managed by the club, but when we finally finish the top floor there will be more facilities other groups can use for meetings and the like when available.” Mr Hobbs says the club’s strength comes from its long history and grass roots focus. “The kids come to training and love to interact with the seniors when they finish. “They just can’t wait to pull on the red, white and blue and play for Gerringong.” He thanks everyone who voted for their project. “This is going to be a great facility for the whole of Gerringong.” Details: Information on the other winning projects is at mycommunityproject. service.nsw.gov.au

Council’s director of planning moving on After a busy 18 months as Kiama Council’s Director Environmental Service, Linda Davis is to leave to take up the role of Director Planning and Environment with Woolongong Council. “I cannot overstate Linda’s contribution to our Council and community, at a time when we were in need of her peerless planning skills and experience,” says General Manager Kerry McMurray. “Linda has led numerous projects that will benefit our Municipality for decades to come, such as the Local Strategic Planning Statement, Town Centre Study, Community Participation Plan and rewriting our Heritage DCP to include Pheasant Point. “She has proven a great asset to our community, not just for her world-class planning brain, but being willing to get ‘in the trenches’ and help our residents

Armchair theatre considers Jane
There is to be a different format for the October meeting of Friends of Kiama Library, with a rehearsed script-inhand performance of Ken Methold’s latest novel, In Search of Jane Austen. Kiama local, Veronica Dzelde, will direct actors from our area and Canberra in the 75 minute performance, using a dramatisation by Brian Cowling. The story revolves around an amateur detective setting out to discover the truth about Jane, by interviewing family members, publishers and friends, after her brother’s biography shows her in a different light soon after her death. Ken is well known locally for his work for stage and screen, including founding
the Kiama Matinee Theatre. A legend in publishing circles for his more than one hundred educational texts for schools and colleges, Ken has also had six novels published by major commercial publishers, written extensively for radio and television and contributed to magazines and newspapers. New coffee & conversation series
Gerringong is to get its own series of author conversations, hosted in a cafe. The first discussion will be with award-winning local author, journalist, playwright, travel writer and media consultant, Diana Plater. Diana’s latest book, Whale Rock, has just won the Gold Award for Popular Literary Fiction at the 2019 Global Ebook Awards. The inspiration for her novel is a secret military hospital in Nicaragua treating soldiers for PTSD in the mid 1980s, drawing on her time there then as a journalist. Her talk will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Details: Sunday 29 September, Blue Espresso Bar, Belinda St 4.30-5.30pm RSVP: 0419 192 502 or plater@optusnet.com.au

The Gerringong Town Hall will be up with the likes of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney and Melbourne Recital Halls when it plays host to the Acacia Quartet. The Australian Quartet had its international debut in Vancouver in 2016 and its European debut performing concerts in Berlin. As noted in a review, “Acacia Quartet performed so well that at times they seem like only one instrument, such is their
clarity and unison.” The program will include Mozart’s String Quartet No. 15, and Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12. The members of the group have extensive experience with Australian and international orchestras. Not to be missed. Details: Sunday 29 September, Gerringong Town Hall, 2pm. $20 for members; $30 for visitors; students and children free.
Early movie treat October’s Pics & Flicks is being held on the last Friday in September due to the Town Hall being closed for renovation. And what a film they have chosen. Woman at War is a dark comedy that takes as its catastrophic subject matter the despoliation of planet Earth and one woman’s secret eco-warrior response to local environmental assault in rural Iceland. Halla, the main character balances her environmen-
talist efforts with a ‘usual’ life, including leading a local choir and seeking to create a family. Rather than be a downer, the substantial skills of the director, Benedikt Erlingsson, ensure the film brings a warmth, wit and wisdom that transcend national and cultural boundaries, making this a truly universal treat. Details: Friday 27 September, Gerringong Town Hall, starts at 8pm. Tickets $10 or less.

The audit will assist in achieving the KTCS’s goals of making the CBD easier to navigate on foot and by vehicle.
▪▪ commence a partial review of the DCP to incorporate design elements of the KTCS, such as active frontages, facades, bulk and scale, lighting and preferences for prominent corner sites. Council also showed its desire to move ahead with the recommendations by starting the process to rezone two of its properties – the Administration site in Manning Street and the retirement village component of the Blue Haven site. The need to expand the Administration Centre had led to thoughts of moving it to a less prime position, but the KTCS strongly advised retaining the administrative functions of Council on its current site, for economic and social reasons. Phase Two of developing our 20 year Local Strategic Planning Statement calls for community testing of the options developed through consultation and research in Phase One. Council has organised a number of workshops to engage with the community on a variety of issues. “This month’s workshops will talk about the types of policies we should consider putting in place to make sure that we don’t lose our values as Kiama grows and changes of over the next 20 years,” says Linda Davis, Director Environmental Services. “Getting this foundation right is very important and we want the community to be a part of the journey to get there.

Re: Steve Sweeney’s letter, The Bugle 7 September. Well I hardly think a group pushing for a narrow surfing focus represents what a local community’s best interest might be, beyond an argument prompted by those who want to commercialise ONE section of the Seven Mile Beach for surfing lessons while there’s plenty of surf availability for hundreds of yards to the west along the beach. I had the doubtful pleasure to attend the precinct meeting where this was discussed and, yes, certainly the majority of attendees were in favor but, having a fair bit of experience in public meetings in my lifetime, it’s easy to tell what a ‘stacked deck.’ means. In short, get the numbers and make as much noise as possible. I noted that one of those opposed to Zone A was the Gerringong Surf Club people although I note that didn’t get a mention in Mr Sweeney’s letter. I have no objection to Mr Moran continuing to conduct his surfing lessons at Seven Mile. He can take the rest, just leave Zone A for the rest of us members of the community and visitors who don’t financially benefit from such public areas, but just happen to pay for their upkeep. Jim Eames Gerringong

The fact that the Kiama community were not given an opportunity to participate in the development of the Community Participation Plan prior to the release of the public exhibition draft does not instil confidence that community views will be genuinely considered in future planning matters. Special Purpose to B2 Local Centre, to allow the inclusion of commercial offices and shops along with the new administration offices. A five storey building height and a higher floor space ratio are also being sought. As a suggestion on the outcome that could be achieved, the KTCS includes two possible options, one with a laneway design (shown on page 3) and another with a town square focus. The Havilah Place planning proposal is to allow for a seven storey residential building on the northern side of the site. The KTCS conceptualises that the residential tower could be accompanied by two storey terraces facing Havilah Place (the Leisure Centre). At the Public Access meeting, local businesswoman and resident Ingrid Keller spoke in favour of the KTCS, and encouraged councillors to not let it gather dust, like the Charette developed 17 years ago. “The Kiama Town Centre Study gives a strategic and coordinated plan but many of its ideas are totally predicated on attracting private investment rather than the provision of any Council funding,” she said. “For real outcomes to be achieved the Council has a very important role to play in facilitating this process without sacrificing the appropriate safeguards that the community expects from them.”

Focus on rock fishing safety Kiama Council is to opt-in to establish a rock fishing zone under the new Rock Fishing Legislation, in an effort to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities. $30,000 in grant funding is available to councils which opt-in, to promote public awareness of the risks and safety measures that should be taken. In a carrot and stick approach, the establishment of a rock fishing zone will also enable the police to conduct their duties with greater powers. “We seem to lose people almost monthly, and more times put our rescuers at risk,” says Deputy Mayor Andrew Sloan. “Sometime when just a few people get fined it changes behaviour across the board.” Visiting rock fishers will be a particular focus.

Folk by the Sea returns to the Kiama Showground on September 27-29 for three days of folk, world, roots, Celtic, bluegrass and gypsy music. With more than 50 international, national and local acts, there will be something for everyone at the sixth version of the annual festival. Continuing with tradition, Festival publicity officer Nick Hartgerink has run his eye over the program (see in full on next two pages), and suggests his top five must-see performances:
Neil Murray Saturday 8-9pm
Neil is one of our finest songwriters, writing songs of Australia that are deeply rooted in his immense knowledge of Indigenous understanding of Country. Though not Indigenous himself, Neil has spent decades in the Northern Territory where he has played with many of our finest Indigenous musicians. His set should be thoughtprovoking and inspiring, with songs such as Cry My Darling, from his latest album Blood & Longing, telling the saga of Australia’s once-great inland waterway, the Darling River.
Neil Murray
Neil is best known for My Island Home, which he wrote while in the Warumpi Band for its singer, Elcho island man George Burarrwanga. Christine Anu turned the song into a massive hit, recognised around the world as one of the true songs of Australia. These days Neil only plays My Island Home if he gets enough requests, so let’s make sure he can’t say no. Woodstock Tribute Show Saturday 1.45-4.30pm
This is shaping as one of the Festival highlights (and not just because my daughter is involved). Four acts (three of which have strong Kiama connections) are reprising the music of the world’s most famous music festival to mark Wood-

The Carefree Road Band, with half its members from Kiama, will be playing songs ranging from Canned Heat to Creedence Clearwater Revival; Sydney duo Buck and Deanne will perform Country Joe McDonald’s anti-Vietnam War anthem I Feel Like I’m Fixing To Die Rag and many others; Kiama’s own Water Runners’ set will range from Joe Cocker to Crosby, Stills and Nash; while another Kiama performer, Penny Hartgerink, is busy rehearsing some classics, including I Shall be Released and Don’t Do It, which were performed at Woodstock by The Band. The show will run close to three hours, and should be a ripper.

How to select an agent when selling your home When selling your home, you want to be sure you have selected the right person to represent you. Here are a few tips to follow that might help you through the process: • Ask family and friends for recommendations. • If you are unsure of who is in your area, research local real estate offices and read up on the sales teams. It’s always good to meet with at least 2 local agents. • Do you feel comfortable with the agent when you meet with them? You need to be very honest with an agent during the selling process and hence you need to make sure you are comfortable with the agent and can have open and honest communications. • Market knowledge, the agent should be able to give you a thorough snapshot of the market in your area and surrounding areas. They should know about recent sales, listings, schools, transport, demographics and the sorts of buyers looking for homes in the area and the style of property they are after. • Choosing an agent is much more than striking a deal on fees. Marketing skills, strategy and negotiating ability will strongly influence your final price.

and community groups get to grips with the often complex world of planning.” Apart from her planning and regulatory responsibilities, Ms Davis also has charge of community services, which includes the library and youth services, and holds the position of Deputy General Manager. Ms Davis has praised the work of her colleagues. “I have no doubt the staff at Kiama Council will succeed in making Kiama an even better place to live and work in the coming years. “I’ve enjoyed the collaborative spirit of what is a very progressive and collegial team, from the leadership group right through to our front line staff. “I am certain our community will soon experience the full benefits of the transformation that we’ve started under Kerry’s leadership. “It has been an exciting time being involved with staff at all levels of council, in improving our systems, processes and strategic planning initiatives.” Ms Davis will finish work on 11 October. Council is currently making interim arrangements, pending recruitment of a new director in coming months.
Stool wins design award At first glance, you’d never guess the purpose of this piece of furniture, being sold by local businesswoman Jacqueline Weiley. That’s one of the reasons why the toilet footstool recently won an Australian Good Design Award. The PROPPR bathroom footrest is designed to help users replicate the squat position when sitting comfortably on a pedestal toilet. “We aimed to create a beautiful, minimalist foot stool that would be a stylish addition to a designer bathroom,” says Ms Weiley. “It’s a functional piece of bathroom furniture to be proud of. It says you care about your health yet you don’t need to sacrifice style!” Her business partner, Zhenya Gerson, a Cronulla based gut health nutritionalist, has been encouraging clients for years to use footstools to help alleviate or prevent gut and bowel issues. “In cultures where squatting is the norm and the bowel is emptied completely each day, the incidence of
many common western bowel problems are extremely low,” she says. The problem is, until now, the stool designs were too ugly to feature in a stylish bathroom. In praising the design, the Jury said, “This is a really neat example of good design making a difference to product. An honest, intuitive and no nonsense design approach has created a unique product that will enhance our health and wellbeing.” The Australian designed and made stool is available from www.theproppr.com in timber or acrylic versions.

Get fire ready now NOW OPEN IN KIAMA DOWNS
Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade was one of the fire stations around the state that participated in the Get Ready Weekend to prepare for the fire season that is already upon us. The shocking start in northern NSW and Queensland is a grim reminder of what could be in store. “The RFS is saying the worst fires this year will be east of the Divide,” says Gerringong’s Deputy Captain, Don Watson. The last big fire on the upper South Coast was in 1967. The hotspots for future
fires, due to their dry forests, are Foxground, Seven Mile Beach National Park, Jamberoo Mountain and Barren Grounds The Gerringong Brigade has 40 members, but is always on the lookout for more. There are a wide variety of roles to suit all comers, who want to make a contribution to their community. As the only emergency service crew in Gerringong, the team of volunteers gets called to a wide variety of incidents before other emergency services, such as the
Kelli, Christine, Elijah and Cooper Williams, with Deputy Captain (and Councillor) Don Watson at the Open Day
SES, can attend. In the last year they have attended 160 callouts, only 20 per cent of which were fires while half were for automatic fire alarms installed in apartment-style buildings. Like your local Rural Fire Brigade on facebook or download the Fires Near Me app to be fully informed. And pop down to your local Brigade if you are interested in becoming a member.

In this column I would also like to thank our outgoing Director Environmental Services, Linda Davis - who has accepted a senior role with Wollongong Council for her contribution to our council and community over the last two years. Linda’s contribution, at a time when we have faced significant planning challenges, is difficult to put into words. I have especially appreciated Linda’s enthusiasm to roll up her sleeves and work closely with our community groups. I know her work will benefit our Municipality for years to come and I wish her all the best in her new role and in all her future endeavours.
Kiama youth join call for action In the lead-up to the march in Wollongong as part of the Global Climate Strike, Kiama children of all ages took up the invitation to paint their protest signs at WorkLife Kiama. “My kids went to the Climate March earlier in the year in Nowra and came home full of passion and purpose,” says WorkLife’s Kate Dezarnaulds. “They made friends across the generations and relished the chance to stand up and be counted. “In the lead up to the big march on Friday, they wanted to find a way to engage many more of their friends to march with them. “The DIY banner making workshop was their big idea and I’m delighted to be able to support them.” While she usually tries to keep her politics to herself, Kate believes that it
is time for everyone to play a role. “The science is certain and the need is acute. This time it felt ok to stick my head above the parapet, and do something constructive.

Thank you to everyone that attended our public meeting. If you still have any questions, please get in touch!
We have given back over $3M to our local community and we are excited to start giving back to Gerringong as well. But we need your support to make this happen!
Call Branch Manager, Amanda on 0478 435 515 to make an appointment in Gerringong, Kiama, Shellharbour or Oak Flats. The $630 million Albion Park Rail bypass project, which will extend the M1 Princes Motorway between Yallah and Oak Flats and cut out 16 intersections, is already 25 per cent complete. The 9.8 kilometre bypass is scheduled for completion in 2022. “Forty per cent of major earthworks are now complete and construction has started on six of the 13 bridges along the bypass, including twin bridges at Yallah,” says the Member for Kiama Gareth Ward. “With these twin 28 metre long bridges, Yallah Road will become an underpass
which will facilitate important local connectivity between Yallah and Haywards Bay as the populations in these areas grow. “The Albion Park Rail bypass is just one of two major highway projects underway in my electorate, including the Berry to Bomaderry Princes Highway upgrade.” The public is invited to attend the next drop-in community information session to find more about the project, or look at www.rms.nsw. gov.au/aprb Details: Monday 23 September, Centenary Hall, 108 Tongarra Road, Albion Park, 6-8pm

The energetic centenarian moved to Uniting Gerringong two years ago, having first lived at Blue Haven when she moved down from Sydney to be closer to relatives. The former legal secretary and piano teacher says she has had a good life, and the secret is to keep interested in things. “I still get out as much as I can,” she says.

Postcard home The New England Coast of the USA has always appealed, with its layers of history, renowned scenery and slower pace of life. So when planning our six week North American holiday, we allowed for half of our time to be spent north of Boston and onwards into the French Canadian provinces. On previous visits we had explored the west coast and Arizona by motorcycle, and thoroughly enjoyed the genuine, welcoming nature of Americans at home, especially in the smaller, out of the way places. So for this visit we hoped to find the same, even though traveling by rental car and the occasional day by bicycle this time. Neither of these transport modes have the same conversation-starting cred as a loaded, two-up touring motorcycle, but the rental car meant that we could carry some serious camera gear this time. I was the travel booker, with strict instructions to allow time to relax. Since we were travelling largely out of season (May and early June) I only pre-booked the two big cities and weekends, leaving most of

the midweek itinerary loose enough for us to explore on a whim or on local advice. This approach proved to be more rewarding than we could have anticipated, yielding many out-of-theway sights and chance meetings with friendly, interested (and interesting) folk. North of Boston we booked into the Ocean House Hotel in Gloucester, and after a couple of nights to settle into the east coast time zone, aided by an invigorating bicycle ride along the rugged Atlantic coast, we continued on.
After crossing the coastal sliver of New Hampshire we entered Maine, surely the state with the most courteous, laid back drivers in the world. Checking into our B&B in the tiny town of Damariscotta, I noticed that our digs backed onto a lake that was both east and west of the town – perfect to capture some moody early morning photos. So I was up before sunrise next day, wandering the foreshores and snapping eagerly as the dawn light gave way to that golden hour of

ever changing colour shown in this picture. In the end we agreed that the clear measure of success for this loosely planned holiday was the number of times, in places seldom visited by strangers, we were asked “are you lost?” So from now on, our holidays will be spent perfecting the art of travel without being a tourist.

He credits the Club’s reinvigoration to a return to the culture of promoting their local talent. “We’ve been club champions for the last three years, which we hadn’t done for 50 years prior to that. “We won the last two reserve grade premierships and the ladies league tag, but the icing on the cake is to finally take out the first grade one. “The real sense of family we have in the club has led to success on the field.” Appearing in their third consecutive decider, the Knights were determined to make sure it would be third-time-lucky against the side that had lowered their colours in 2017, and produced some spectacular tries along the way against the Superoos. After soaking up early pressure, the Jamberoo side were on the board in the sixth minute when five-eighth Mark Asquith dummied his way over and Kurt Field converted for a 6-0 lead. However their joy was short-lived when Tom Angel crashed over off a Dylan Morris pass and minutes later fullback Tom Atkins scored a superb
individual effort when he grubber-kicked through and dived on the ball. Man-ofthe Match Cam Vassoler converted to give his side a 10-6 lead. Two Vassoler penalties stretched the lead to eight before Knights captain Keiran Poole produced a great individual effort and at 18-6 the Knights were flying high. Right on halftime Vassoler produced a great clearing kick and a flying Dylan Morris raced 60 metres and scooped up the ball to race over under the posts for what proved to be a crushing blow to Jamberoo’s hopes of a second half comeback. The Superoos managed to pull one back midway through the second half when lock Luke Asquith barged over. However the Knights had one last try in them when Callum Thistlethwaite fielded a bomb out wide and send Matt Morris diving over in the corner. Jamberoo kept battling and with three minutes remaining scored the final try of the day through Kurt Field, however it proved too-little too-late as the Knights celebrated in style as the fulltime siren sounded.
