Local Regrow: planting the seed Elizabeth Burnett of Burnetts on Barney is hoping that an initiative of hers to help South Coast nurseries will spread to other fire and drought affected areas. “A whole lot of South Coast wholesale nurseries are doing it tough, and I’m hoping that identifying their plants with a Local Regrow sticker will encourage people to support these local growers,” she says. Burnetts typically buys a third of its plants from ten South Coast nurseries, including Jamberoo Native Nursery, so Elizabeth is very aware of the hardships they have suffered. “Three of them have been burnt out and the others have been dealing with water restrictions, heatwaves and now floods. “There was also a period when they just couldn’t get anything out because of road closures. “The fires stopped production, sales and access to markets.” Her Local Regrow initiative also has a multiplier effect, as $1 from each plant sold, regardless of its value, will be given to Landcare Illawarra and Shoalhaven specifically to buy native tubestock for replanting. “They are the experts who will make sure the right plants are put in the right places. “In turn, they will buy these plants from local

growers, so the circle is complete.” Elizabeth feels stongly that each of us has a role to play in the recovery period. “It is a time to restart, rebuild and reinvigorate the whole of the South Coast, beginning in our own gardens. “Our gardens have to become the temporary habitat for displaced animals, insects and particularly birds. “We’ve effectively missed a whole season of flowering.” The Independent Garden Centres Association has expressed interest in extending in the campaign which Burnetts has developed throughout its Australia-wide network.

End to kerbside clean-ups This March’s kerbside cleanup service will be the last, with Council deciding its risks, costs and inefficiency at diverting waste from landfill made a compelling case for change. Not only are staff are at high risk of injuries due to the repetitive and physical nature of the job, but the trucks currently used are not ideal for the work. Materials left on the footpath are also a source of danger for the public, as well as being an eyesore especially after scavengers have been.

Another reason in favour of the demise of kerbside clean-ups is that it has been shown they have a significantly lower resource recovery rate than the more recently introduced household bulky waste drop-off events. The kerbside collection service has been limited to 1m2, and has not allowed for the collection of any large furniture, e-waste or mattresses. Council’s household bulky waste event allows for 2m2 of waste, in addition to

e-waste and mattresses, and recently won a 2019 Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Award, in the community waste services category. “While the kerbside cleanup is a highly visable service, in reality just over 2,000 properties out of 13,000 actually used the last time it was done,” says Council’s General Manager Kerry McMurray. However councillors went against staff recommendation to just provide two household bulky waste

events a year, by voting to also include one user pays on-call clean-up collection per year. The user pays system will allow urban households to call for a collection service, at a subsidised rate of $85. Larger bulkier items would not qualify for collection. Mr McMurray says the new system will not result in any change to the current commitment to link the domestic waste management charge to the level of rate pegging increases for this and the next two years.

Jerrara Dam options narrowed down

Currently open to the public as an arboretum and wetland, Kiama Council’s Jerrara Dam has long been regarded as an under utilised asset with massive potential, given its size, location and beauty. Four years after its decommissioning, Council is to commission a consultant to further consider the feasibility and business cases of two options highlighted in a 2016 Report on the site’s potential. The options to be further investigated for the 53 ha site are for it to be utilised for eco-tourism (including fishing and horse riding) and as an eco-resort. “Council has a strong view about the need to generate alternative sustainable financial revenue streams,” says General Manager, Kerry McMurray. “Potentially, Jerrara Dam could diversify our visitor accommodation stock to form a sixth bow to our five holiday parks. “This stage is still very

Other South Coast outlets also feature in her plans.

Members of the St Vincent de Paul Conference in Kiama would sincerely like to thank people from Kiama and surrounding suburbs for their generosity for the recent bush fire appeal. A huge vote of thanks also to the Kiama Surf Lifesaving Club for initiating the appeal and giving our Conference support in our role during the appeal. Our members want everyone to know what has been happening with all the wonderful donations that were made on the weekend of the appeal. The very first day after the appeal we made direct contact with a family who had been relocated to Kiama to stay with relatives. This family sadly experienced a very traumatic time, losing everything that they owned. This family, aided by a volunteer driver, visited the Saints Peter and Paul Parish hall where all the donations were being sorted for distribution. From that day onwards we have been constantly seeing individual families and also sending truck loads of the generous donations of clothing, bedding and toys to the most affected areas. We have had a steady

stream of donations travelling to Sussex Inlet where we were in constant contact with the local St Vincent de Paul Conference. It has been a slow and sometimes frustrating job, but due to safety and security issues we have all learned to be patient. Just this week we sent off a final truck load to the communities around Mogo and Mossy Point. We are very grateful to a local social worker there who has agreed to store the donations and to distribute the much needed items with her team of helpers. During the past three weeks several of our members have also volunteered at The Recovery Centre in Ulladulla. Special thanks to the following who have supported us: Bakers’ Delight Kiama, Gainsborough Bakery, Tony Panopoulos and Lyndel Stuckey, as well as all the many people who generously gave their time to sort and pack all the donations. Our help centre continues to be open every Monday 3.30-5 pm at the Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church Meeting Room, 98 Manning St, Kiama. Members of St Vincent de Paul Conference Kiama

Because of this generosity, Kiama Red Cross is not going to doorknock in March for Red Cross Calling. : welcome The Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival is a unique 3-day celebration of live music. It’s also a celebration of community – made free thanks to Kiama Council and a special team of volunteers and organisations passionate about connecting the world with groovin’ tunes. With more than 70 up-close gigs across the cafes, bars, shops and streets of the region, KJBF is truly a party like no other – set against one of the country’s most picturesque backdrops... And you’re invited! Ever conscious of the environmental impact of our festival, we are striving to make the Kiama Jazz and Blues Festival weekend a zero-waste event. You can help us make this year’s festival the most sustainable yet by bringing your keep cups and refillable water bottles, taking all garbage with you and catching the train, carpooling, walking or riding to all events. We thank you for working with us to achieve this important goal! The festival organisers would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of this land. We pay respect to Elders both past, present and future.

First National Coast and Country have been managing holiday rental properties for owners for over thirty years, particularly for home owners in Gerringong and Gerroa, but also in Minnamurra, Shoalhaven Heads and here in Kiama.

MANAGING HOLIDAY RENTALS

Local vets Dr Mark Booth and Dr Natasha Lees have travelled to south west India to give vets there the benefit of their experiences in treating cattle. India ranks first in the world in overall milk production, accounting for 20 per cent. Over the last thirty years, production has increased 300 per cent, with virtually all of it consumed domestically. As volunteers for Vets Beyond Borders, they will be presenting workshops on advances in diagnosis and treatment of ruminal disorders, including diagnostic techniques and surgical procedures. “I have 20 years of mixed practice veterinary expe-

rience and it’s going to be fantastic to be able to impart some knowledge to 30 local vets,” says Mark. “The course is really going to add to their practical skills.” The holiness of the cow to Hindus will bring an extra dimension to the experience, as Indian vets put added emphasis on trying to save the animals. The couple moved to Kiama six years ago. Mark practices locally at Kiama Vet Hospital, and Tash is a senior associate with Scibus, a Camden-based cattle consultancy business. “The workshop will be a learning curve for both of us and the Indian vets,” says Tash. “We will learn so much

about their veterinary and agricultural industry and their culture, and they will learn techniques and approaches to cattle management.” Both of them have travelled in India before, and Mark participated in Foot & Mouth preparedness training in Nepal. VBB’s VetTrain program was launched in 2009 with the initial purpose of providing clinical training to on animal birth control and anti-rabies projects in India. A decade on, the program is now able to provide training in a wide range of clinical disciplines, to allow appropriate treatment of the myriad of diseases and injuries that afflict animals around the world.

Mayor Mark Honey communicates directly with residents and ratepayers Whilst recent rain has restored hope and our landscape, this summer’s drought and bushfires refocused the thoughts of many to what more we can and must do to slow the rate of climate change. I thought it timely to provide an update on Council’s progress in ‘greening’ our energy consumption. In November 2017 we signed up to the Cities Power Partnership, along with councils across Australia, making five pledges. Pledge 1 was to install renewable energy systems on Council buildings and other infrastructure. A 32kW photovoltaic system has been installed on the Kiama Library. The Kiama Leisure Centre can support a 100kW system. We just have to do some preparatory work before seeking quotes in coming months. Our new Blue Haven Bonaira facility also has 44kW of photovoltaic systems installed. The Gerringong Library, when complete will also have a photovoltaic system. Pledge 2 was to create a revolving energy fund, and identify other funding

the options regards various charging technologies, what this means for upgrading infrastructure to accommodate charging stations, and what are the best locations for those driving electric vehicles. Pledge 5 is to set renewable energy (or emissions reduction targets) and sustainable energy policies for Council and the wider municipality. This is probably the most important (but challenging) pledge of all and you can expect to see some action in coming months. Whist we understand energy usage and emissions from council operations, we are seeking the best available data specific to our municipality as a whole. Understanding the breakdown in sources of carbon emissions will allow us to focus on the areas where we can make quick gains and help inform the consultation we will have with the community as we set our targets. Many local governments have set dates to achieve carbon neutrality and I hope that before too long we will join them.

A large crowd gathered at the Pavilion to fondly farewell Roni Rathbone, one of Kiama’s adopted daughters. Roni’s contribution to the community was recognised as far back as 2000, when she was honoured as the Citizen of the Year. It took her husband Col until 2017 to receive the same honour. Together they have been a formidable volunteer force for many groups and causes over the years, particularly the Friends of Blue Haven Aged Care Facility, Kiama Red Cross, Vision Australia and the View Club. On the sporting front, amongst her other commitments, Roni was also an active volunteer for Kiama Netball, the Ladies Auxiliary for the soccer and Kiama Tennis Club. Spring into a healthier you. sources, to finance projects resulting from our pledges. Already up and running, this has paid for the photovoltaics on Kiama Library. The savings are being re-invested into the fund, hence the term revolving. Pledge 3 was to adopt best practice energy efficiency measures as part of Council operations, and support community organisations to adopt these measures at their facilities. Council has invested in a NSW Government program which will see 676 street lights in our municipality upgraded to energy efficient LED equivalents by May. A number of energy efficiency upgrades at facilities have also been identified, which await the Revolving Energy Fund to build up before proceeding. Pledge 4 was to provide charging infrastructure for electric vehicles at key locations. Charging infrastructure has been proposed for the new Gerringong Library, and other locations such as the Pavilion and Council holiday parks. The work being done now, is to better understand

NSW currently has the lowest percentage of women representing the community at local government level, with an average of 31 per cent female representation after a further decline at the last election. The situation is even worse in Kiama, despite its history of strong female representation, including as mayors. For the last two terms, Councillor Kathy Rice is the only woman who made it to Council, out of nine positions. With council elections due this September, Kiama Council and its neighbouring councils are holding a special workshop to encourage more women to stand at local government elections. “In 2012 I was surprised to be the only woman elected because this was so unusual for Kiama,” says Cllr Rice. “When it occurred again in 2016, I realised that more women might nominate if the Councillor role was explained and they could learn of the support available to them, both pre- and post-election. “This forum will begin that process.” After election, Council will provide all new councillors

with training to help them learn the ropes. “Women are totally capable of becoming effective councillors,” says Cllr Rice. “A better gender balance on Council would give it a broader perspective and reflect our community more closely. “Being a councillor is both a great learning experience and an opportunity to influence Kiama’s future direction. I’m glad I was persuaded to give it a go. Mayor Mark Honey agrees gender diversity would be a good thing. “I would like to see an increase in the number of women on council so that we are representative of our community. “Being a councillor comes with enormous responsibility and I believe many women in our community have much to offer in directing council into the future.” Council elections are being held across NSW on Saturday 12 September.

Bugle noticeboard MUCH LOVED BUGLE VAN FOR SALE

2001 Toyota Hiace diesel automatic with only 360,000 odd kms on board. Has a touch of rust but still very tight and happy on the open road with far horizons. Has been The Bugle work horse since we started in 2014 and hard at work for us in the years before that. XNB 094 has been regularly serviced at Harts Garage and Shoalhaven Heads Automotive. Things like timing belts have been replaced as required. Ring Steve on 0428 662 499.

Postcard home Coincidences never fail to amaze… On Friday 7 February, my daughter and I returned to Kiama after three incredible weeks in the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon region of Ecuador. More about that in a moment! On arrival home I was handed a copy of The Bugle 8 February and immediately my eyes were drawn to the Postcard home – from the Galapagos Islands. As I read it my amazement grew as Kate Malfroy related the story of posting a card from there, addressed to ‘Tracey, Top of the hill, townhouses where cyclone hit, Kiama’ it was eventually delivered to Tracey! The remarkable addition to the story is that Tracey is a neighbour and friend of my daughter and son-in-law, who live next door to her! Back to our trip! There is so much written and filmed about the Galapagos, but until you visit them for yourself the true magic of these islands remains undiscovered. We had a myriad of adventures with new, incredible, wonderful and never ending onslaughts to our senses. We walked amongst giant

tortoises, marine and land iguanas, and sea lions – not in zoos – just there! We saw hundreds of birds, not least of which were the gentle but flamboyant flamingoes in the early morning in their natural habitat. Whilst snorkeling in pristine waters, the fish made you feel like Alice in Wonderland in a never ending massive tropical fish tank! The Amazon area incredible in different ways. As we journeyed by canoe up the wide Napo River (the rivers are like superhighways into the rain forests/jungle) for about four hours, every sense was awakened again. Truly exotic, the sounds all around us told of the various birds, animals and insects which we were going to observe on our way to Napo Wildlife Lodge and over the next few days. Although we were paddling through dense, beautiful rain forest every so often explosions of colourful flowers as well as birds and animals would burst forth. One day we climbed above the canopy of the trees and watched, marveling quietly, the brilliant toucans and macaws. It was surreal. So much to see and absorb

Kiama Sevens in 48th year

The Morgans Kiama Sevens has continued to cement its reputation as being the club competition to be in. “We had 40 teams sign up within the first 24 hours of nominations opening, and the last four slots filled up shortly after,” says Tournament Director, Mark Bryant. “Apart from the top clubs competing, including four sides from the ACT, we are looking forward to the First Nations team [Rugby Australia development squad, coached by Jarred Hodges] playing for the first time. “The Australian Sevens side will be playing in LA on the same day, but we’ve been told that team members who are coming back from injury will be playing for their clubs in Kiama.” Mark says there are a number of reasons for the Kiama Seven’s popularity. “Apart from us having the best positioned footy field in the world, people like the fact that it is one day, (amazing), caiman, otters and is run very professionaletc. We have had such joy ly to a strict timetable. and been so lucky. “Then there is the $38,000 Heather Hill and in total prize money, which Belinda Jones, Kiama is bigger than that offered by

the Sydney Sevens. “It is also the last Sevens tournament before the Shute Shield, so it is a great bonding event for the clubs.” This year will be the first time that the competition will be streamed live through Rugby Australia’s website. “Prior to this we’ve been streaming it on our facebook page and even then getting 80,000 hits. This is going to take it to a much bigger audience,” says Mark. Talent spotters from Rugby Australia will be there on the day to confirm their choices. Details: Saturday 29 February, Kiama Showground, from 8.15am. $10 entry. www.kiamarugby.com
