6000 cyclists coming to town Locals will get an insight into the impact the L’Etape cycling event will have on our area at community consultation meetings organised for late March. “L’Etape is a huge event, run by the Tour de France,” says the Chair of Destination Kiama, Councillor Matt Brown. “This is our chance to prove to the world that we can host major events. “People who come to the meetings will get to understand the huge benefits this event can bring to our area. “I don’t think it has fully sunk in yet.” The route for the event has been set, but the details not yet released. The event hub, as well as the start and finish lines will be based in Kiama, with the course extending through the Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands. “The detail will be outlined at the meeting, showing which roads will be closed and when so we can see how we will be able to manage our daily lives while the event is on,” says Cllr Brown. With over 6000 cyclists plus their families and friends expected to converge on Kiama for the event, to be held on Saturday 28 November, Cllr Brown says it is going have an extraordinary impact on the whole region. “Accommodation is going to be booked out throughout
the Illawarra and nearby South Coast. “It is going to be an amazing event that will give us worldwide coverage. “Come along to the meetings to find out how to get involved, ask any questions and hear from the event organisers.” A special meeting is being held for business owners, to focus on how they can benefit from the event. Other community meetings will be held in the lead up to the event.

Precinct reps meet Council’s new Director Environmental Services with Ministers While Council’s new Director Environmental Services, Jessica Rippon, has been with Shoalhaven Council for the past 14 years, she has considered Kiama her home for much longer. She counts herself as a local given her strong sporting ties and the involvement she and her family has with the Kiama community, from their home in nearby Albion Park. “I surf at all the beaches, my kids play football for Jamberoo Rugby League Club, and I have spent all of my spare time here over more than 20 years,” she says. “ I already know a lot of people around my age in the community, and I want to get out and about as much as I can to meet more people. “I have a passion for working closely with the community.” Ms Rippon has already begun meeting with representaties of the various precinct groups to introduce herself A battle between two keen and find out what concerns bidders has resulted in a them. record price for an unrenoHaving spent the last 14 vated house in central Kiama years at Shoalhaven Council, with a heritage listing. she is relishing the opportuLong term locals bought nity of working for a smaller the property through a buycouncil, where her work can ers’ agent for $1.695 million, make a real impact. significantly above the “You can make a lot of reserve, after bidding started difference and help on the at $1 million. ground a lot more in a small“It was a great result,” was originally built for “It is a beautiful old house er council. says First National Coast & George Fuller and his wife that deserves to be pre“Your efforts can someCountry’s Andy Wharton. Local Member Gareth Ward, who is also the Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services, arranged the meeting with Rob Stokes, the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and participated in the discussions. The CCAG brings together the North, South and Central precincts and the Jamberoo Valley Residents and Ratepayers Association, with each nominating representatives with a range of practical experience and expertise. This includes people with backgrounds from federal, state, and local levels of government in executive
management, stakeholder engagement, policy development and service delivery, as well as long-term locals with farming backgrounds and small business owners. “In accord with current precinct guidelines we do our best to work with the Council and other authorities in a constructive and cooperative way to get the best possible outcomes for Kiama,” says Karen Lang from the Central Precinct. “The CCAG has had extensive consultations with Council about the loss of character and heritage, the lack of adequate infrastructure especially during peak times, and the lack of a rationale for requiring further development. “Minister Ward’s invitation was an opportunity to have these concerns heard at the regional and state govern-
ment level, where Kiama planning decisions are often made. “We aren’t NIMBYs, but believe development should be well-planned and aligned with infrastructure upgrades.” Ms Lang said that the visit wasn’t undermining Council’s role, as it acknowledged the work that Council has already done in this direction. “We want the views of our precincts to be considered in planning decisions across all levels of government.” Mayor Mark Honey sees it differently,“It is disappointing someone from Council wasn’t invited to attend that meeting as well. “CCAG did it without any consultation with Kiama Council, even though they are just supposed to be an advisory group to Council. “It is very unfortunate.”

New Director Environmental Services, Jessica Rippon
Director Environmental Services’ responsibilities have expanded from Planning to include Community and Cultural Development, Environment and Health, and Library Services. Ms Rippon has a broad range of qualifications and experience to match the breadth of her new role, with a Masters in Planning, a Bachelor of Science in human geography (looking at community development in the planning space), and a Bachelor of Commerce in marketing and communications. She is in the process of finishing a Masters of Management. After beginning her career as a planner in the private sector, she moved to Shoal-
haven Council, initially as a strategic planner. During her time there she worked in a variety of roles, from planning and development assessment and management roles in planning to looking after a broad range of corporate functions including internal audit, communications and community engagement. During the recent bushfire season, she had responsibility for Shoalhaven Council’s Emergency Services operations. Her prior knowledge of the geography of the region and the issues facing the community have given her a head start in settling in. “I love the diversity of the role,” she says.

Wanting to help businesses in fire affected communities survive, a number of local organisations have taken the Empty Eskies campaign to heart and organised bus trips down south to inject money into the local economies. Here’s Al Marsden’s report ciative that they hadn’t been on a trip taken by the Kiama forgotten. Open Day for cottage
The Kiama Blowhards and friends boarded a coach on a recent Sunday and headed south to show our support to bushfire communities. We ate in the cafes and pubs, shopped til we dropped and just chatted to the people who have endured such a horrible ordeal. They are such terrific, stoic people who were very appre-
for providing the coach free of charge, drivers Billy and Julian, and all of the wonderful people who jumped on the bus and had a long but fruitful day. To everyone at Milton, Mogo and Ulladulla ...... it will get better. If you get the chance, jump in the car, head south and support our friends in need.
Historical Society is delighted the owners of the Station Master’s Cottage, Carol and Jack Flanagan, have offered to hold an Open Day. The cottage is typical of those built on the Southern train line when it was extended through Gerringong to Bomaderry in 1893 and provided a vital link with the nearby butter factory, then Dairy Co-op, which had been established in 1888. It has been sympathetically restored and extended.

The Rathbone Family would like to sincerely thank everyone who has sent messages, cards, flowers and or have called during the past few weeks following our sad loss of Roni, they have all helped to ease the pain. We knew how much Roni meant to us but we were amazed at what she must have meant to others, as shown by how many people attended her service and have expressed their condolences in many ways to us since her passing. Thank you everyone. Terri, Jai, Klyr and Col Rathbone, Kiama On one level I congratulate Margot and Rod Cunich for having the will to follow through on their convictions by organising a small, public climate vigil outside the office of their local federal MP [The Bugle, 8 February]. However, I cannot join them in their aims and beliefs. I, too, am a so-called ‘quiet Australian’. However as I see it, I am one of a great number who – despite the pressure and bombardment coming from most sources of public domain information – have managed to retain my capacity for ratio-
nal, independent and critical thinking. That being the case: a) I cannot accept that the human species is capable of having any significant influence on the systems or forces at work in nature, on a planetary level b) even if I were capable of believing so, I have not seen any ironclad and most importantly, irrefutable, scientific evidence that human actions are the primary cause of the current (seeming) warming trend in the planet’s climate. For my tastes, there is still too much contrary ‘evidence’ around that contradicts the accepted orthodoxy. Certainly there is too much ‘reasonable doubt’ in my opinion, to justify actions that would wreck the Western world’s economies and living standards c) again; even if I were so convinced, given that Australia supposedly contributes something like just 1.3% of total worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, anything that Australia does unilaterally will not make the slightest difference to the planet’s climate. This much has been
publicly acknowledged before now, by the many in the scientific community. It is also highly improbable that our unilateral action would set a ‘good example’ and jolt the USA, China and India – the major emitters – into similar action. I haven’t even touched on here the entirely political nature and motivations of the ‘acute climate emergency’ crowd in their various guises. Given the above, I hope that the present government and our PM will continue to maintain our basic ‘wait and see’ position, even if they are forced to enact some relatively mild and meaningless ‘window dressing’ climate legislation to keep some people more or less happy. For my part, I will keep my head down, and maintain my ‘quiet Aussie’ status – which by their actions, the Cunichs have now withdrawn – until I and others like me, come out of hiding again at the next federal election. New medical centre for Gerringong
SALES PERFORMANCE Is why we won an Agency of the Year Award Jason Stalgis Managing Partner First National Coast & Country
The doctors and staff of Gerringong’s longest established medical practice are looking forward to operating from their purpose-built medical centre in Greta St from 23 March. Dr Russell Pearson launched the Gerringong Family Medical Practice from his home 40 years ago, and was joined shortly after by Dr John McAlpine and
Dr Robyn Dalley. “It is wonderful that these three founding doctors are still with us when we move into our new home,” says Dr Jacqueline Sloan. “It has been a dream of theirs for some time.” Space constraints in their Belinda Street location have restricted the growth of the practice and the allied services it can offer.
“We just couldn’t fit anyone else in,” says Dr Sloan. “With more consulting rooms our existing doctors will be able to extend their availability and we will be able to offer more specialist services.” A podiatrist and a specialist sport & exercise physician, Dr George Pitsis, are the first new members of the team. This is a great honour for us as a real estate agency and also for us as a team of people serving the communities of Kiama, Gerringong, Gerroa and the surrounding villages. Slow Food Saddleback to award more Snails Celia Wade, the convenor of Slow Food Saddleback, is hoping that even more local food producers and outlets will qualify to be awarded its Snail of Approval in 2020. Last year was the first time that the internationally recognised award system was introduced to our region. “We hope that our Snails of Approval will become a deciding factor in people’s food choices, just as they are overseas,” says Celia. “Locals and visitors can be confident that where they see the Snail of Approval logo they are assured of the Good, Clean and Fair food championed by the Slow Food movement. “The recipients are protecting biodiversity and aiming for sustainability in their endeavours, while producing delicious food.” Nominees are put through a rigorous vetting process to ensure the integrity of their operations. Last year, nine businesses that provide food in the Kiama region, including through the Kiama Farmers’ Markets, were recognised. This year, Slow Food Saddleback is extending its scope north to cover food providers in the Illawarra. “We are encouraging people to self-nominate or to nominate businesses they know would qualify,” says Celia. “Let’s encourage those doing good things.” Details: Nominations can be made online at slowfoodsaddleback.com.au 2371 until Friday 20 March.

The past week or two has felt like Switzerland in Kiama to me. The way the sky has hung, deep blue over the emerald green of headlands lush with grass after all this much-needed rain. Of course, you don’t get much surf in a landlocked country such as Switzerland, but you’d be surprised how big the swimming culture is there. I was lucky enough to live in Switzerland’s largest city Zurich for five-and-a-half
years until moving back to Kiama in 2019. In mid-summer, Zurich hosts the annual Limmatschwimmen where 4,500 people jump in and float down the river Limmat right through the city. The event starts at the Frauenbad (women’s baths) in central Zurich and you get cheered on by friends, family and passers by who wave from bridges and the riverbanks as you bob along (all participants are issued with a floatie).
from page 1
The swim takes around 45 minutes and only goes ahead if the water temperature is above 21 degrees. It’s the one day of the year that swimmers are allowed in the main part of the river, and tickets sell out in minutes. I did the Limmatschwimmen twice while I lived in Zurich. If you miss out on a ticket, it’s not really a problem though, as you can also swim in beautiful Lake Zurich, or one of at least ten
