KHS takes up War on Waste Challenge The ABC’s influential War on Waste program has chosen Kiama High to feature in the school waste challenge for its next series. The first round of filming has finished and the challenge to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill is well under way. The film crew will be back to document the progress early next term, with the series due to come back to TV in July. The challenge is being driven by a core team of Waste Warriors from Year 7. “They represent the excellent cultures that have been developed at the four local primary schools,” says Kiama High Principal Catherine Glover. “The first approach was made to War on Waste by a local primary school, after the local Community of School’s environment group discussed how we can tap into the expertise that has been developed at the primary schools and the enthusiasm of the students. “It worked in with the program wanting to show gorised. Over 50 students volunteered to help the how a larger school could tackle the problem.” Waste Warriors sort the contents. To establish a base case, a week’s worth of The War on Waste then provided an extra range of rubbish was retained on site so it could be cate- bins, for things like paper recycling and organics,

A long held dream of Councillor Warren Steel, to make the Bombo Headland more accessible for walkers, is a step closer with a $500,000 grant by the State Government through its Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund. “At the moment the paths don’t link up as there is no way down the cliffs,” he says.
“This money is for a staircase cantilevered off the rock cliff face to enable people to walk right around the point from the Boneyard to Bombo. “It is going to be a big tourist attraction. Already people are finding their way here, but once it is opened up it will rival the Blowhole

KISS Arts Fest: Get involved The centre pages of this edition of The Bugle are a pull-out guide to this year’s Kiss Arts Fest on at the end of the month. Here are just some of the ways you can get involved over the weekend, because after all an arts festival is all about being involved: Lantern making workshops and parade After some warm-ups in previous years, this year the lantern parade will be hitting its stride under the direction of lantern making expert Phil Relf. It will mark the transition from the day to night time events. K-J RSL: Funding crisis averted Good news for the Kiama-Jamberoo RSL Sub-branch, with the Kiama community responding generously to our appeal in the last edition to help cover the costs of ANZAC Day, and the promise of a cash injection by NSW RSL head office. “Since this appeal was initiated we have received notification that the State HQ of NSW RSL will be coming to the party to assist us in our wider mission to support the veteran community, so, it seems our funding situation is not as dire as it was originally,” says the Sub-branch’s Secretary, Peter O’Brien. He says despite the reprieve, the timing of which is still unclear, the support of the community is greatly valued. “We are a very small Sub Branch and, after organising ANZAC and Remembrance Day commemorations, it is all we can do to just keep our head above water from one year to the next,” he says. “The generous support of the community in funding our ANZAC Day commitment will allow us some breathing space to use additional funds for other activities that we would not otherwise be able to undertake. “We take great heart from this evidence the Australian people, in this case exemplified by the Kiama community, fully understand the importance of this commemoration and that they value and embrace the qualities of service, courage, mateship and sacrifice so vividly displayed by servicemen and servicewomen in all conflicts.” The money raised for the cause will be used to help pay for the costs of this year’s ANZAC Day commemorations. A fund-raising motorbike ride is also being held on Saturday 21 April, departing the Kiama Rockpool carpark at 10am to travel a route through Jamberoo, Robertson, Sutton Forrest and Kangaroo Valley before ending in Berry.

GM’s parting words A farewell message from Michael Forsyth: I have been privileged to have a long and successful career in local government and it could not have been the satisfying journey it has been without the people I have worked with and the wonderful community I have served. As General Manager I have been privileged to lead a workforce that has been inspirational, innovative and hard working. Our achievements in this time include development of the Elambra Estate at Gerringong, the new Kiama Library, the Kiama Pavilion, Gerringong Old School Park, extensions to the Leisure Centre, Stage 5 of the Blue Haven Independent Living Units and new wings at the Blue Haven Aged Care Facility, and the start of work on the Kiama

Community bank powering ahead The Steering Committee for the initiative to establish a Bendigo Bank branch in Gerringong has passed the half way mark in its campaign to raise $800,000 in pledges from the community. “Around $500,000 has already been pledged and we need to maintain momentum,” says Leanne Mitchell of Gerringong accounting firm Numbers Count. “We know people want a bank to come back to town, yet of the 1000 pledge forms we have distributed at least 750 are out there sitting on
tables or attached to fridge doors. “The time to act is now. Let’s make this happen for the sake of our town. “We set ourselves an ambitious timeframe to get the pledges in because we didn’t see any point in mucking around. “I encourage anyone who wants to see Gerringong have a bright future to lodge their pledge forms this week. Just drop them into the Pharmacy or Park Ridge Retreat.” Another way the community can help is to consider transfer-

ring their bank accounts to the Gerringong, Gerroa and Shoalhaven Heads branch of Bendigo Bank. “The branch we want to open already has a BSB number, so you can already get your money working for our community,” says Ms Mitchell. Representatives of the Bank will be in Gerringong on 24 and 27 April for private meetings to arrange the transfer of the accounts or discuss new loan opportunities with them. Appointments are necessary, and can
be booked on 0427 239 732. For a limited period the bank will be offering customers of new branches a ‘no transfer cost’ deal. Because the bank initiative is all about community, the Committee is also organising a Trivia Night to raise funds for the next steps in the process. “We promise there won’t be too many questions on banking,” says Ms Mitchell. It is to be held at the Gerroa Fishermans Club on Saturday 12 May. Tickets from Numbers Count.

A decision on the name is yet to be made, with the idea of a public competition mooted.

was able to announce that Kiama Council had been found ‘fit for the future’ and would no longer need to amalgamate with Shoalhaven City Council. This was only possible because of the dedication of staff and the Kiama community, my thanks to you all. I am excited at the prospect of spending more time with family and friends, continuing to ride my bike in areas near and far and to perhaps take on some community projects but it is also bittersweet to say goodbye. Kiama Council and its staff have been my second family for over 27 years and I have watched them grow and mature into a formida-
ble yet caring team. A team that I am extremely proud to say I have been part of and also lead during that time. It has been an incredible privilege and I am very proud of the high regard for which the Kiama Municipality is held and the excellent standard of facilities and services is due to the innovation, commitment and teamwork of all staff. I congratulate Kerry McMurray on his appointment as the new General Manager. I am certain that under his leadership the Municipality will remain strong and resilient to meet the future challenges. I wish you all the best for the future.

War on Waste Cont from p1 to reduce the landfill component. “The inventory clearly outlined where things were coming from, and is allowing us to target and address a reduction in land fill,” says Ms Glover. “There were lots of things that we weren't doing that we can do now because of the new bins making the choice highly visible. “Things aren’t just mindlessly being put into a skip and taken away.” Ms Glover says in a way the project is mirroring the waste initiatives Kiama Council has introduced into people’s homes. “It is a great learning experience for the whole school that requires a big culture shift. “Our Waste Warriors’ role is to keep recycling top of mind throughout the school. “Just because they are in Year 7 doesn’t mean they can’t be leaders.” She says the support of the teachers, canteen, cleaners, staff and the parent community is an essential element in the success of the project.

New world class event Kiama is to host the second leg of the new bodyboarding world tour, dubbed the Kiama Bodyboard Slam (30 July-9 August). Chair of Destination Kiama, Councillor Matt Brown, says the Kiama Bodyboard Slam is the only Association of Professional Bodyboarders (APB) World Tour event scheduled for Australia. “The Kiama Bodyboard Slam is a massive coup for our region, building on the success of hosting the WSL Juniors in recent years. “To have Kiama hosting a leg of the World Tour that includes Chile, Spain, Brazil and Portugal will once again put us in the global sporting spotlight. “Importantly, having more than 100 competitors in Kiama for 11 days in the normally slow business season in winter, is great for local business.” As part of the deal, Kiama has also secured the 2018 HIF NSW Bodyboard State Titles (4-6 May). Both events will be headquartered at Surf Beach, or suitable nearby beaches.
The Mentals Rock for Tathra An initiative by local music promoter and musician Lincoln Piper is bringing Australian music legends Mental As Anything to Gerringong for a fundraising concert for Tathra. “I’ve been in the Bush Fire Brigade so have the seen the devastation that fires can bring first hand,” he says. “A community that loses 70 houses in one day needs ongoing support.” When fellow musician Tara Favel said she wanted to do something, as she knows people affected, Lincoln took it to the next level and booked the Mentals in. “They leapt at the idea of being involved, and are a big drawcard for the event,” he says. “Everyone loves their songs and knows they are great live.” The Mentals will be supported by local musicians and Scott McRae (known for his E Street and Stevie Wright and the Easy Beats Show).

As Seniors Week comes to a close it is a good time to reflect on the importance of the contribution that seniors make to the community. Almost 40% of our local population is aged 55 years and over and a large number of this demographic are active and engaged in the local community. Whether it is volunteering through service clubs, charities and sports clubs, or caring for family members, the senior members of our community can make a real difference to the lives of those around them. During Seniors Week, older Australians were asked to consider the benefits of having a My Health Record. As we age we start to suffer from niggling aches and pains, some of us develop more serious medical problems, and there always seems to be another tablet to take for some ailment. It is sometimes difficult to keep track of everything. My Health Record is a convenient digital system that can keep your important health information easily
accessible in one place. You can add details such as allergies, medical conditions, prescriptions, medications and emergency contacts and your doctor can see your pathology results or scan reports, if you give them access. Another benefit of My Health Record is the ability to nominate a trusted person to have access to your Record. This particularly supports and assists carers to ensure better‑connected care and control over healthcare services for those they are looking after. The My Health Record is not just for seniors, all Australians will have a Record by the end of 2018, unless you choose to opt out. To register for a My Health Record visit www. myhealthrecord.gov.au or phone 1800 723 471. You can also talk to your GP on your next visit. Council provides a great Seniors Week program for over 55’s to enjoy and this adds to the other programs offered throughout the year.

New women’s choir A new a cappella choir especially for women is starting off in Kiama, following immediate success with the concept in Berry. Katandra Kiama is the brainchild of experienced Choir conductor Antoinette Raynal. “Katandra means ‘song of the birds’ in the Gurangai language, making it the perfect name for a women’s choir,” says Ms Raynal. Katandra rehearsals use a dynamic structure, involving vocal warm ups but also learning vocal techniques and aspects of voice production. “Everyone mingles and workshops through various musical activities,” Ms Raynal explains. “Apart from being a lot of fun, this is a certain way to quickly boost vocal confidence and build musical ability. “I run the choir without charge. All our member fees go toward supporting the choir and our charitable endeavours in the greater community. I just love to sing and enjoy good company doing it.” The repertoire is wide. What determines the music chosen to be sung is that it must be a beautiful song, a great arrangement of parts, fun to sing and include vocal skill building features. No audition is necessary to join.

Preparing your home for sale When preparing your home for sale, there are two rules we recommend above anything else. Reduce clutter. Your property is best presented clean and clutter-free. If the property looks clean and smells fresh, prospective buyers will form a positive opinion of your home. Whether it's an Open House or a private inspection, it is recommended that you are not there. Buyers find it hard to feel comfortable and picture themselves living in the property if the current owners are present. The prospective buyer is unlikely to voice their true opinion of the property and will often rush through the inspection. Maintenance pays off The Rule of Thumb is – if something needs repair, fix it!

There may be several things in your home that you have simply become accustomed to over time – things that you have been promising yourself to attend to. Well NOW is the time. Buyers will mentally add up their perceived costs of repairing all those minor flaws and end up with an amount that is generally much higher than your actual costs will be. You may believe the repairs are insignificant, however the buyer may question the maintenance and upkeep of the rest of the property. Necessary, non-critical minor repairs and perceived owner neglect will either lower the price or lengthen the time to sell. Check all corners for peeling paint, chipped edges and loose wallpaper and repair accordingly. Repair all major problems. In today's climate of open disclosure and vigilant home inspections, the 'Golden Rule' applies: Treat the buyer as you would treat yourself. URGENT – PROPERTIES WANTED With so many properties selling recently, we have an over-supply of serious buyers. If you are considering moving, give us a call as we may have a buyer for your home.

Postcard home When it comes to value-formoney, Julie and I couldn’t go past the offer from TripADeal with their twofor-one holiday to China, but just how could they do it? We then travelled to the Venice of the East, Suzhou, which dates back to 514 BC, where we had a cruise along the Grand Canal. After breakfast the next day we visited the UNESCO World Heritage site, The Lingering Gardens, before travelling to Shanghai. The culture difference between Beijing, which was
