Strong concerns over boardwalk route Over 500 people have signed a petition to Kiama Council voicing their concern about the environmental impact of a 600 metre section of the proposed Minnamurra Boardwalk. The section in question, at the southern end of the 1.6 kilometre boardwalk, is elevated out over the water, rather than following the edge of the road as it does to the north. “At one particular place, it is 14 metres out, and there will be no room for anything else at low tide,” says Richard Norville, who says he loves the river and wants to protect it. “Right from the first meeting Council held at the Golf Club, people have said they only want the boardwalk if

it doesn’t go in the river. “Cardno [Council’s consultants] state the overwater section will cause environmental damage or loss, but all efforts will be made to minimise it. “We are not interested in minimising the loss - we want to prevent it happening.” A group, called Friends of the Minnamurra River, has been formed to lobby for the route to be changed. Its chair, Will Chyra, says, “Our intent is to be the voice of the river. We want to protect it for future generations. “We are not opposed to the boardwalk itself, we are opposed to it being in the river. “It should be on land to minimise any environmental

Three years ago the Gerringong Men’s Shed came up with the idea of holding a Duck Derby as a perfect post-Christmas family fundraising activity. With the sponsorship of First National Coast & Country, the annual event is going from strength to strength. “All money raised will help us to purchase much needed equipment and help fund improvements to support men’s health and well being in our local community,” says the Shed’s Graham St Clair. Ducks are already available for adoption around Gerringong. The concept is that a little yellow duck is registered to an owner, and

if that duck wins the race its owner wins $500. Two races are run at the event, and you’ll be told which race your duck is in. “It will be a fantastic day for all the family,” says Graham. “As well as the races, there is the legendary Men’s Shed sizzling BBQ and our famous Duck Wheel, with the chance to win some wonderful prizes.” There is also a Best Dressed Duckling competition for the kids. The ducks are thrown off the Gerroa footbridge to start each race. Details: Saturday 29 December, Crooked River, Gerroa, 11am. Ducks adoption fee $5.

Diggies popping up on Blowhole Pt

Following the end of the tenure of the previous leasee, Milk & Honey, the café space at the Visitors Centre on Blowhole Point remains empty. But not for long. The tender was won in August by the Diggies Group, which operates the Diggies Café at North Beach Wollongong. However, they didn’t gain access to the site until November and have told The Bugle their full café will not be open until the end of January. Instead, says Diggies’ owner Stan Crinis, a pop-up venue will operate on the site over the holiday period. “We are so excited to unveil our kiosk in a couple of weeks and provide a taste of what’s to come at the Blowhole site.” He says the trailer-style kiosk will be true to the Diggies fresh beach style with a trailer servery and outdoor seating, serving a takeaway style menu. He expects the outdoor kiosk to be open in the week before Christmas. The revamped interior space is expected to be open in February.

Surfing the tourism wave Those hoping to keep our local waves to themselves for a bit longer might not like the news that Kiama is set to become ‘Destination Surfing’ for the South Coast, thanks to a new partnership with Surfing NSW. “The partnership will make our region a surfing mecca for half the NSW coastline,” says Mayor Mark Honey. Surfing NSW CEO, Luke Madden, says the three year agreement will see the region used as a prime surfing hub for tourism, high performance programs and events. “The Kiama region is one of the most wave-rich regions on the NSW South Coast and one we’ve had great success in running events, such as the World Junior Championship and the recent Kiama Bodyboard King Pro. “We look forward to strengthening the relationship with this partnership.” The agreement locks in a number of state and national surf competitions,

promotional support for local Werri Boardrider and Jones Boardriders events, and a range of surfing programs and training Kiama will also be promoted as ‘Destination Surfing’ through a range

Indefinate leave of absence for Brown “We are working hard with a talented team to deliver a final venue that does justice to the incredible location.” The changes will include expanded opening hours, extensive fitout work and a liquor licence. As yet, Diggies is not paying rent for the iconic site. It is a period of expansion for the Wollongong-based hospitality group. It is part of a partnership, known as Public House Collective, that has recently bought the Robertson Inn and is currently rejuvenating it into the Robertson Public House. Three of the Collective’s partners are Kiama-based.

While no conviction was recorded against Councillor Matt Brown following his appearance in a Townsville court on drug charges, the ramifications of the guilty plea on his role in public life are not yet fully clear. The current councillor and

former (briefly) NSW Police Minister was in Queensland to attend a tourism conference, in his role as chair of the Destination Kiama Advisory Group. While not wanting to go on record, members of the community have voiced their shock and dismay at his conduct, and their concern for his well-being. With ICE being such a destructive and addictive drug, there is scepticism of his claims of having found it and deciding to experiment. The day the news broke, Mayor Mark Honey said Cllr Brown had requested a leave of absence. “I have talked to Matt this morning and understand he

is dealing with some significant personal issues. “My first concern is for Matt’s welfare. It’s important for him to take this time off from his duties, to ensure his health and wellbeing. “Council will be offering Matt the support services we provide our employees, for their mental and physical health. “Naturally I’m disappointed in Matt’s behaviour, which reflects poorly on our Council and our community. “It’s also not consistent with the Council’s values that Councillors and Council staff work to uphold.” In a statement he sent to The Bugle, Cllr Brown said, “At the moment I have no

plans regarding any leadership roles for the future. My recovery could take some time and I will be better placed to make decisions after treatment. “I ask that I be given the time to address my problem and seek the help needed, and thank everyone for the overwhelming support given.” Since his election in 2016 on a Community and Labor ticket, winning almost 18 per cent of the vote, Cllr Brown has been an active and vocal participant in Council decisions. It has yet to be decided which councillor will take over as Chair of Destination Kiama in his absence.

Shopping Get training for the Captain Christie centre DA raises traffic concerns After discussion of the DA for the redevelopment of the Kiama Village shopping centre to include an ALDI and an expanded carpark at the November meeting of the Central Precinct, serious concerns were noted about traffic issues. The two major issues identified were:  the proposed pedestrian crossing at the roundabout entrance on Terralong St was thought to become a cause or a great deal of traffic disruption  the impact of a secondary traffic access point on Meares Place, a cul de sac behind the Village. It is proposed that deliveries will be made to the shops (excluding ALDI and Woolworths) via there, in addition to access for the second level of parking. The Precinct is to make a submission calling for a redesign of these aspects.

Join Gerringong locals for the only ocean swim held in our area, the Captain Christie. The 1.8km swim from Boat Harbour around the rock shelf into Werri Beach follows the course of a legendary swim by Captain Christie, a 19th Century sea captain, who bet a crewman that he could swim that course. Last year over 200 people took up the challenge.

Entry fee $40 pre-race day or $50 on the day. Minimum age is 14, with parent’s permission required for those under 18. Those who prefer to use Stand Up Paddleboards can also enter.

Work starts on Shellharbour Hospital $251m redevelopment The Member for Kiama and Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra, Gareth Ward, has turned the first sod turn on the $251 million Shellharbour Hospital redevelopment. Early works will prepare the site for construction, which will begin next year. The main works are on track for completion in late 2021, with further refurbishment of some existing areas of the hospital to follow once the major works are completed. “We are delivering a quarter of a billion dollar hospital upgrade which will be an enormous boost to health care in our region,” says Mr Ward. “Let me be clear, Labor failed to match our commit-

ment for this hospital. In fact, they closed services at Shellharbour Hospital when they were last in Government.” When completed, the redevelopment will deliver:  additional operating theatre capacity

 a new Emergency Department  additional critical care services  increased acute inpatient surgical services  an expanded outpatient clinic space.

Help for Meals on Wheels Kiama Meals on Wheels has received $6,500 from the State Government to purchase a new three door freezer to store diet specific, nutritious, ready-to-eat meals for residents living in the Kiama Municipality. On presenting the cheque, Gareth Ward MP acknowledged the work done by the volunteers. “Kiama Meals on Wheels do an outstanding job – they not only provide flexible food options to help people continue to live independently – they also bring people together to enjoy a meal with company and arrange transport to and from the venue.” It is a grassroots community-based volunteer organisation working in the community for the community. New volunteers are always welcome. Find out more at kiamamealsonwheels.com.au or call 4232 3735. Licence # 155712C

Round-up of Christmas community events

Christmas Parade and Market in Gerringong It wouldn’t be Christmas in Gerringong without the annual Street Parade, which is the only one that happens in our villages. Organised by the Rotary Club of Gerringong, the Parade coincides with their monthly Village Market, which will continue the festive theme. The Street Parade down Fern Street will have over forty local community and sporting groups participating, and feature colourful floats, pipe bands and classic cars. Of course, the true hero of the parade will be

Peter Chapman. “It is a great opportunity for people to slow down from a busy year and prepare themselves emotionally and spiritually for Christmas.” Details: From Weds 19 December til Christmas Eve, Fern St, Gerringong, for a couple of hours after dark.

Kiama Show promotes healthy school rivalry The Kiama Show Society is once again running a Schools Competition between local primary schools to encourage the next generation to continue the tradition of lodging entries. “Kids can get involved by submitting their entries for free in any of our Junior Pavilion classes, including art, cooking, photography, sewing, Lego and many more, including the hotly contested vegetable person and animal sculpture,” says the outgoing Show Secretary, Sue Granger-Holcombe. “Not only is this a chance for them to showcase their creative skills and school pride, it’s also a chance to get involved in the longest running community organisation in Kiama; the Kiama Show, which is in its 171st year.” The big question is, can last year’s winner, Kiama Public School, defend their title or will they be bested by one of the other schools? The winning school will be calculated on a percent-

age of schools’ enrolments. This means Jamberoo, with 132 enrolments, could easily win this year, as it would only need 28 entries to beat Kiama’s last year’s entry total of 109. Gerringong would need 98 entries to beat Kiama’s 2018 win, Minnamurra 86 entries and St Peter & Paul’s just 54 entries. But then again, Kiama might up the ante on their entries for the 2019 Show so it’s time for everyone to get creating. Sue Cox, Head Steward of the Handcraft Section, says,

“We are often impressed by the number of junior entries, particularly in the Lego and the recently added Kewpie Dolls classes, and we are looking forward to some great entries in all categories for 2019. “As some HSC students put in great entries (often their major work), we have also decided to offer free entries for all under 18 categories in Handcrafts.” Details: Info on the many junior pavilion categories is at www.kiamashow.com.au Entries close 22 Jan, and the Show is on 25-26 Jan.

To the Editor Well it’s just like ‘groundhog day’ with Kiama Council again seeking to increase rates by nearly twenty per cent over the three years to 2020/21, resulting in a total average increase of residential rates of $270 a year. I have advised Council that I oppose these unnecessary increases and suggest other residents do likewise. John Mountford, Kiama We welcome letters. Longer ones may be edited. Opportunity for farm fresh food this Christmas To help ensure there will be the freshest of local food on the Christmas table this year, the Kiama Farmers’ Market is holding an extra market on Sunday 23 December. “We won’t be holding a market on Boxing Day, so we thought it would be a great idea to let people come along and stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables on the Sunday,” says Market Manager, Tricia Ashelford. “The holidays would have begun for most people by

then, so it will be an opportunity for those who can’t normally make it on Wednesdays to come along. “It will be a great time for community and visitors to come together as they stock up for the week ahead.” The associated Berry Farmers’ Market will be having a day off on 27 December. Both markets will be back the following week. We hear Santa is coming to the Kiama market on Weds 10 December, at 4pm.

Kiama is building on its reputation for holding the biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations between Sydney and Melbourne. Known as the 96.5 Wave FM Kiama Sky Show, this year’s event will see more than 500 fireworks light up the night sky in a spectacular display, which will include laser shows that were introduced into the program last year. Postcard home Luckily for me, Tim is excellent at making decisions. I could not decide where to go during our quick three week trip to Switzerland and Italy to meet up with my two daughters, during what we expected would be a cold and rainy low season in their autumn. He planned and booked an amazing holiday. Starting in Zurich, Tim navigated the complex train ticket systems so we could wander around the beautiful cobbled laneways of Old Town Zurich, explore the streets and monuments of Lucerne, and take in the breath taking views above the clouds at Mount Pilatus and Mount Riggi which were a highlight of the trip. We ventured out to the Rhinefall, the start of the Rhine River and the largest waterfall in Europe, and had a fabulous lunch in a Laufen Castle. We began the Italian afternoon aperitif wine habit when we met up with friends in Milan, where we visited the amazing Duomo and Galleria and walked the two km fashion strip. Of greater interest for Tim was the

vertical forest; an apartment tower with the equivalent of 10 acres of gardens. Taking a fast train to Florence, we enjoyed many of the museums, gardens and picturesque laneways, Ponte Vechhio bridge views and fabulous (window) shopping. Here Tim spotted some excellent restaurants and we developed a taste for truffles and exquisite hand-made fettuccini, tortellini and ravioli. We also managed a quick trip to Pisa. In Rome, we walked our feet off among many of the ancient sites and museums, fuelling ourselves with gelato and aperitif. Tim also found an amazing Roman style vegetarian restaurant which served us delicious fried artichoke with mint sorbet for an entrée, followed by risotto and gnocchi. While we did have a couple of days of bad weather, overall autumn is an excellent time to visit as, with Tim’s quick thinking, we were able to quickly make our way through the galleries and historic sites without the crowds. Minnamurra Boardwalk factors regarding the Minnamurra Boardwalk, as required by the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act. “This review involves the NSW Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries), NSW Roads and Maritime Service and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. “Once this review is completed, a report will be placed on public exhibition, for submissions to be made. “These submissions will be included in a final report to Council.” At 21, Sarah Ann Blair is a fifth generation Minnamurra resident and has recently joined the Minnamurra Progress Association. “The Progress Association claims that everyone has been consulted about the boardwalk, but I didn’t see any of their letterbox drops or notifications. “I am concerned about the impact of the Boardwalk on traffic and safety in the village [near the bridge]. Until now the Progress Association has been the only way to get those views known.” The idea of a Boardwalk has been championed by the Progress Association for over twenty years.

“Two years ago we succeeded in getting Council to allocate $30,000 in funding for a feasibility study which led to the State Government granting $4.6 million to the project,” says the Association’s Chair, Cliff Mason. He says members would prefer the route to be close to the road, but understand it has been put over the water to lessen the environmental impact. As a Jones Beach resident, Sheree Smith is not eligible to join the Minnamurra Association. She believes the wider community is not aware of the full detail of what is proposed. “The video on the website is not representative of what they plan to build. “If it is what they say it is for, to get pedestrians and cyclists off the bends, it doesn’t need to be so big or have three carparks. “Council says 94 per cent of residents are in favour of the Boardwalk, but they don’t say only 46 people filled out the survey. “It was also done at a time when details of the final route weren’t available.” The petition is at local cafes and on change.org
