Warren gets to know Gilmore Warren Mundine freely admits he doesn’t yet know who the Mayor of Kiama is. He knows he has a lot to learn about Gilmore, the Federal seat he was parachuted into by the Prime Minister, but it isn’t a challenge that daunts him. “I have a reputation for being able to do this across Australia by sitting down and listening to people,” he says. “I want to learn how to support the small businesses here, because people always talk about jobs but at the end of the day they are employed by businesses. “How do we help them grow? How do we make them sustainable? What are their issues and their con-

cerns? What infrastructure do we need to create jobs? “I’ve experience starting businesses and schemes in regional Australia. I’m good at spotting opportunities.” The first people he has been talking to are local Liberal Party members, many of whom were put out by their chosen candidate being rejected. “I think even those who have resigned over the issue will still be voting Liberal because their major concern is they don’t want a Bill Shorten prime ministership.” Ann Sudmalis, whose decision not to stand again prompted the candidate uncertainty, has also been giving him guidance in getting to know the electorate.

As reported in the national news, Mr Mundine, a successful businessman and indigenous leader, was headhunted for the marginal seat by Prime Minister Scott Morrison. The first Mr Mundine heard of it was when a journalist called him to ask if he’d heard

about the favourable Liberal polling done in the seat and whether he was going to stand. Well over a month later he was invited into the Prime Minister’s office for a chat and it was not until after Christmas that he signalled his willingness to run.

The offer was only firmed up two days before the official announcement was made. “All my friends think I’m bit mad, but I see what the Shorten Labor Party is doing, and that is abandoning the working class.

Shadow Minister has also been invited. Chair of the Group, Mark Croxford, says, “Planning and development matters are constant issues of concern month after month at precinct meetings. “Decision making regarding the future character of the Kiama LGA has been taken away from the community and given to bodies which make decisions on state-wide legislation that

Shining the light on planning policies Ahead of next month’s State election, the State Planning & Development Minister, Anthony Roberts, has agreed to attend a Forum in Kiama focussing on his portfolio. Election promise Jen is Kiama’s new for local surf clubs Show Secretary

The day after the Liberal Party endorsed a candidate for Gilmore (see page 1), the Labor candidate Fiona Phillips was joined at Surf Beach by Deputy Shadow Leader Tanya Plibersek. The visit highlighted an election commitment of more than half a million dollars for vital equipment and capital works upgrades to support the activities of Kiama and Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving clubs. The Kiama Downs SLSC has been promised $214,000 to:  replace two motors on Inflatable Rescue Boats  purchase a new ATV Rhino beach vehicle  upgrade the clubhouse and carpark. The Kiama SLSC has been promised $367,000 to:  replace a Jet Boat used for rescues  purchase four resuscita-

tion manikins and two Heart Starter Trainers  upgrade the clubhouse and landscaping. “I’m very proud of Labor’s commitment to upgrade equipment and facilities,” says Ms Phillips. “Our local Surf Lifesaving Clubs are community assets and provide much loved and iconic venues for people to meet, learn and celebrate. These facilities need a bit of an upgrade to continue to remain fit for purpose. “A failure at sea of a Jet Boat or an IRB motor could put lives at risk, putting off the maintenance of the clubhouse with the harsh coastal conditions for a year too long, is a false economy. This is a smart investment that demonstrates my commitment to our community.” The occasion was also used to promote Labor’s $46 million Swim Smart

plan to deliver more swimming and water safety lessons for students during the school term, but was overshadowed somewhat by interest in Mr Mundine’s endorsement. The Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen recently opened Ms Phillips’ campaign office in Nowra, and Bill Shorten held a Town Hall Meeting there.

When Jen Hampshire moved to Kiama five years ago, one of the first community events she went to was the Kiama Show. “The Show embodies many of the things that people are seeking when they leave the city - a connection to the land and the people that farm their food, a slower pace that leaves time for creativity, and being involved in a community,” she says. The next year she got involved by exhibiting flowers and cakes (beginning a determined campaign to win the Marble Cake sash something she finally achieved this year), and was soon offering to help out in any way she could. Her professional expertise in office management and strategy made her a natural fit for the role of Show Secretary, once Sue GrangerHolcombe signalled she wanted to retire after ten years of service. Jen says six months’ shad-

The Friends of the Minnamurra River (FMR) say expert analysis of a consultant’s key report, recommending that there should not be a full environmental impact assessment of the effect of Council’s proposed Minnamurra River Boardwalk, has found the report “seriously flawed and unreliable”.

As reported in our last edition, the protest group believe that a environmental assessment should be done for the whole of the project. The analysis was undertaken by Carl Glaister, a highly qualified Illawarra horticulturalist and Leon Fuller, an internationally known expert on the flora of

owing Sue as Assistant Secretary has been a dream handover, giving her a real appreciation for what’s involved. “Sue has been very open and sharing, and has promised to be at the end of the phone, so I’m confident next year will be just as well oiled. “Seeing 250 people come together to make it happen over the Australia Day weekend was remarkable.” As a newcomer to the area, Jen says joining the Show Society has fast tracked her connection with the local

community, and she encourages other newcomers to get involved. “While I don’t have any local farming links or live on a farm, I do have a passion for connecting people to the source of their food and highlighting the importance of farming in our community.” This passion has also led to Jen being an active member of Slowfood Saddleback and helping to manage the new Berry Farmers’ Market. “My focus as Show Secretary will be to respect the farming heritage and showcase the agricultural richness of the Kiama area in an event which has something to offer all members of the community, from the youngest to oldest.” At the opening of the 2019 Show, Ms Granger-Holcombe was presented with the prestigious Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Agricultural Award. Sue Cox and Barbara Wyles were also made Life Members of the Kiama Show Society.

the Illawarra. They say the consultant has grossly misidentified and misinterpreted the ecology and nature of the vegetation of the area around the proposed route of the boardwalk’s northern end, and its importance as part of a subtropical rainforest. “Kiama councillors need

to strongly question the accuracy and rigour of what they are being told about the impacts of the proposed boardwalk on the estuary and its entire sensitive ecosystem, soon to be protected by Commonwealth government legislation as critically endangered,” says FMR Chair Will Chyra.

Fundraiser to help Chris get around In March last year, Chris English was celebrating his 69th birthday with his loved ones when he had a fall resulting in devastating and permanent injuries. He suffered many facial fractures, broken bones and a spinal cord injury. He is now a C4 complete quadriplegic and relies on help from his family and friends for almost all of his daily activities. He was transferred to Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick where he has undergone several surgeries and intensive rehabilitation in the Spinal Unit. He has been there for 9 months, with his family making the long journey to Sydney and back several times a week. Chris has only recently been transferred to Port Kembla Rehabilitation Hospital and will continue learning how to operate an electronic wheelchair independently. After spending a short time chatting with just three of Blue Haven Care’s 115 volunteers, The Bugle is left with no doubt they feel their role is valued, needed and enjoyable. Jan Dodge has been helping out with the centre-based care for 17 years, and has no desire to stop. “Volunteering really helped me settle into Kiama when we came down from

Sydney,” she says. “It gave me a focus and helped me make friends. “The people who come along to do activities here or go on an outing are so happy to be here. “It really sends you home with a smile.” Karon Dawson, who has only been helping in the last year, since she retired from

teaching, agrees. “I really think I get more out of it than they do. “People have amazing stories to share and really appreciate having someone to listen.” Her husband has been a volunteer driver for a lot longer and, apart from her doing sessions at the centre, together they take a group of intellectually disabled teenagers bowling each week. “They just love it, and it gives them an opportunity to get out an about.” Peter Holen began by using the Blue Haven’s services as a client seven years ago, before being asked if he wanted to join the team of volunteers five years ago. He says of helping out with the men’s social group, “The guys get a lot of enjoyment out of it and so do we.” Myriam Marchant, Blue Haven Care’s Volunteer Coordinator, says that while there are countless opportunities for people to volunteer their time and skills, the Council-run service is in particular need of people to drive minibuses, act as helpers on bus trips and visit people to provide social support on a one-on-one basis. “It would be great if we could encourage more people to get involved. “Whatever your interests are we’ve got some activity you could get involved with, from art and music to pet therapy and outings to shops.” Most of the volunteers are in their sixties and seventies, but ages range from midthirties to mid-eighties. “We also have High School students come up as visitors to the Aged Care Home,” says Ms Marchant. It’s with great pleasure I can announce that Council has received a 78 per cent satisfaction rating from residents recently surveyed by IRIS Research. This continues Council’s good run of form from the Community Satisfaction Surveys, having recorded a similar rating in 2016 and 2011. Naturally, as Mayor, reading results like this is very pleasing, as it confirms what I hear every day: that most people in our community are happy with the way things are being run.

In fact the Survey found satisfaction with Council is consistent no matter the resident’s gender, age, where they live, how long they have lived here and whether they pay rates or not. That means Council is serving the needs of all parts of our community pretty well. What is even more pleasing, is how residents rated specific Council services and facilities. Again, I hear so much about the great job Council does with services and facilities given how many we provide and how varied they are. But when your overall rating comes in at nearly 10 percent above the average for similar councils, even this proud local was happily surprised. Forgive me for bragging, but this performance is really worth bragging about.

According to IRIS Research, Kiama Municipal Council is now the best-performing council for:  Maintenance of local roads  Food and garden organics  Library services  Community halls and centres  Maintenance of parks and gardens  Maintenance of sports grounds and playing fields What’s important to remember is that these services are simply the star-performers in what is a stellar result. I can take little credit for all this, although residents’ satisfaction when dealing with councillors came in at 4.1 out of 5. The real credit goes to the hard-working, dedicated and professional staff (and volunteers), who keep Kiama Council running. This result is well-deserved

recognition for their efforts. Although, knowing many of them, they’ll already be figuring where there’s room for improvement. And that is a very important part of doing this survey: finding out how to do things better. The community rallied to save its Council, it also supported a Special Rate Variation. I know Council staff are highly motivated to reward that support. This Survey is proof of that. There’s heaps of information in the Survey, which you can get from Council’s website www.kiama.nsw. gov.au. I encourage everyone to have a read. I think the results are something we can all be proud of. Because, at the end of the day, the Council is the community.

Seedfunding community gardens

The Gerringong Men’s Shed’s Duck Race in late December raised over $5000 to purchase much needed equipment and fund improvements to provide a place for men’s mental health and wellbeing in our local community. The Shed gives a big thank you to its major sponsor First National Real Estate Coast & Country and other supporters - Gerroa Fishermans Club, Gerringong Automotive, Gerringong Pharmacy, Gerringong Medical Centre, Gerringong Mechanical & Tyres, Grants Butcher, Park Ridge Retreat, Mercure Hotel, Sea Vista Café and Gezza Pizza. Without their help this event would not be possible. The winners of the races have been notified.

Applications are now open for Council’s Community Garden Grants Program, which supports groups wishing to establish a local community garden or further develop existing ones. The Program offers grants of up to $4,500. The next round of grants closes 15 March. Full details are available on Council’s website, including eligibility guidelines.

The evolution of the Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival continues this year, with a refocusing of the activities in Hindmarsh Park. Rather than using the Orry Kelly Stage, where there is no close up protection from the sun for audiences and problematic sound issues, Festival organisers are moving the entertainment west to under the shade. A large temporary stage will be positioned between the Community Centre and Terralong Street to capitalise on the Park’s natural amphitheatre. The lack of shade in front of the permanent stage makes people cling to the shade around its fringes, leaving vacant space in what should be prime positions in front of the stage. “We want you to see the whites of the performers’ eyes, the sweat on their brow - and we want you to bump up against one another - a real sense of a shared

Postcard home One of the delights of our recent midsummer European holiday is experiencing the joy of al fresco dining. The cities and towns seem to bend over backwards to accommodate just about anyone they can squeeze into the squares and alleyway’s outdoor dining tables. The first three pictures convey this summer delight, experienced at stops on our river cruise from the South of France to Paris. The fourth picture is of an outdoor table at a Kiama restaurant in midtown Manning St. Imagine our dismay after returning from Europe to be told by the owners one recent summer's night that no outdoor tables could be used after 8.30pm as a night time curfew had been imposed after their success with a liquor license. I suddenly felt a chilly wind from 1955 sweep through Manning St. Customers about to take a table at 8.15 were informed that the curfew was about to take place.

Naturally, the visitors enjoying their mid-summer Kiama holiday thought that the restaurant was joking. Not so, as the cafe has placed notes on the tables warning of the new ‘rules’. The Council in Kiama spends a sizable amount of money encouraging tourism, with great results. Without these essential visitors to our beautiful part of the world, the town would be a shadow

of what it has become and so many of the businesses would not exist without them. Height restrictions on new buildings, care taken with garden planting along Terralong St, etc. is an absolute credit to our Council. I’m hoping that the owners of the restaurant in question, are soon able to resolve a situation that quite frankly should never have occurred. They have worked so hard

bringing their Italian Trattoria style to Kiama, replacing what was quite an ordinary fish and chip establishment. Pulling the shutters down on tourists, when the summer daylight is still so high in the sky, is just not acceptable. Regards, Greg Martin Vale, Kiama

Warren Mundine “I started life as a factory worker, and ended up President of the Labor Party – so why would I come and work for the Libs? Because things have changed. “We took up Bob Hawke and Paul Keating when they said: be aspirational, buy a house, invest. This is what people like my family have done and now they see Labor leaning too far to the left and it is all under threat.” He was attracted to Gilmore because of his passion for regional development and his family ties to the area through his mother’s side. She was a Donovan, a family name that springs from an Irishman who came over from NZ in the 1800s and married a local Aboriginal woman. “The Donovans are a massive family living up and down the coast. “My grandparents lived at Moruya and Kiama and I’ve been coming back and forth to the South Coast all my life. “It is a very Aboriginal thing, this sense of country. “I’ve always looked at this area as a place I love and have strong ties with.” He believes there is an opportunity for Gilmore to

capitalise on being the focus of national attention at the coming election. “I’ve got the benefit of whatever happens to me affects Scott Morrison because we are joined at the hip. He is the one who headhunted me, saying this is my man. “I’ll be getting people down here so we can talk about what we need.” One project that has immediately caught his eye is further upgrades needed to the Princes Highway. “I will be talking with Gareth Ward about securing Federal funding as happened with the Pacific Highway.” He says this will definitely not include building a nuclear reactor at Jervis Bay. Apart from this political sway, Mr Mundine is keen to use his extensive network of contacts in the business world to get things done for Gilmore. He has set up a temporary home in Bomaderry, and plans to move his home here if he is elected. He is also in the process of divesting himself businesses and investments to ensure compliance with the Constitution.
