Keep-cup solution now free to users Six months after its launch, the Kiama-based initiative to make it easier to say no to disposable coffee cups has become free to use. The basic premise of the Green Caffeen system remains the same – people download the app onto their phones, scan it at a participating café and are given their coffee in a Green Caffeen cup. The cup is not theirs to keep. Instead they bring it back to any participating cafe, the return is scanned into the system and washed by the café, and the customer can use another of the distinctive green cups. While thousands have downloaded their app, the resistance to paying a sub-

Bowlo directors recommend merger with Kiama Leagues After months of due diligence, the directors of Kiama Bowling & Recreation Club have decided that Kiama Leagues Club is its best merger option. At time of writing, a Memo of Understanding between the two clubs, detailing the mutual commitments and the future structure of the

merged entity, is being finalised for approval by the members of both clubs. “It has taken a lot of hard work to get to this point,” says Kiama Bowlo Director Peter Wallace. “Members will have the final say on our future, but we are confident that the

Leagues Club is the best partner for our club. “The members entrusted us to investigate the possibilities on their behalf, much of which had to be done on a confidential basis. “Our recommendation is based on facts, not emotion, and it is what we believe is

in the best interests of the Club.” Following its call for expressions of interest regarding amalgamation, the Bowling Club had official approaches from Kiama Golf Club, Kiama Leagues Club, Bomaderry Bowling Continued on page 4

not returning the cup to a participating outlet within 30 days. “We think of it as like a library fine - the whole idea is to keep the cups circulating not piling up at home.” The duo are looking to duplicate the deals they have already done with Kiama, Wollongong and Port Macquaire councils to supply branded keep cups for their region. These are then supplied to the participating cafes. “Councils are very keen to get involved, as they want to reduce the massive problem disposable cups cause. “Our system is all about making it easier for users.” Another way the Green Caffeen message is going to be spread is through roasters supplying branded cups to the cafes they service. “The first of these is going to be Danes Coffee Roasters, winner of the Champion Australian Roaster title two years in a row. “They are really excited about being able to provide this environmentally friendly solution for their customers.” With 85 per cent of cafes in the Kiama LGA participating in the Green Caffeen scheme, it’s time to get on board with the initiative.

Working to preserve Kiama’s history

Sue Eggins, President of the Kiama & District Historical Society, feels like she and a small team of other concerned residents are fighting a lot of spot fires as development continues to threaten the history of the area. “We are still looking at getting properties identified in a heritage study in 2000 recognised in the Local Environment Plan (LEP) and afforded protection,” she says. Just one of the houses she is concerned about (above), on the corner of Shoalhaven and Barney Streets, has been sold by long term owners to a party which has also bought the block neighbouring block on Barney Street. “This house was built in the 1880s by the town’s undertaking family, the Walkers, and is in original condition,” says Sue. “It was given a ranking of 2 [out of 5] in the 2000 Study, but for some reason

only some of the houses with the top ranking got listed in the LEP. “We are hoping that Council will be able to help us find ways to protect the heritage of our town before it is too late.” She cites the example of 47 Thomson St as the type of place that is under threat, with a DA lodged for 12 units. It was built in 1900 for the manager of Bombo Quarry. In 1919 it was sold to members of Mayor Mark Honey’s family. Sue also holds concerns for the old RMB Lawyers house in Collins St, which has been sold to developer Nick Daoud. She hopes the heritage precinct around the Harbour end of Manning St will be officially recognised soon. The recent Town Centre Study found strong support for protecting heritage as a way of retaining identity.

Hidden in plain sight

The smiles say it all. We are delighted to report that the painting missing from Kiama Hospital has been found safe and well. As a last resort, the organising committee for the book on the social history of Kiama Hospital appealed to Bugle readers to help them find the painting of Barroul House. The Kiama Graduate Nurses Association donated it to the Hospital in 1987, from money raised at the 100th Anniversary reunion. “We commissioned the painting from local artist Brian McCauley for $400,

and we really wanted to know where it was,” says Lorraine Ettingshausen. It turns out the watercolour, that used to hang in the front foyer of the Hospital, has had pride of place in the front office of Kiama Meals on Wheels for years. “I was having lunch after the ANZAC ceremony, and someone told me they thought they knew where it was,” says Margaret Raison. “I was so excited I went up and tried to peek through the blinds.” Joanne North, Manager of Kiama Meals on Wheels, says it was packed up when

they ceased operating from the kitchen at the rear of Barroul House. “It was in dreadful condition, covered in mould and with a broken frame, and one of our volunteers, Betty Dallimore, had it restored and repaired. “We thought it a great way to recognise the history of our organisation at our new location in Brown St.” Now that it has been found, in plain sight, Margaret and Lorraine are happy for it to stay where it is. “We were just wanting to know where it had gone,” says Lorraine.

Bowls Club chooses suitor from p1 Club, Shoalhaven Heads Bowling Club, Toongabbie Sports Club and Cabramatta Leagues Club. In a notice to members, the Bowling Club Directors said, “The submissions from all six clubs involved had merit and were presented and discussed in a professional manner. “The Board’s detailed assessment of these clubs’ suitability involved a number of facets including financial status, management expertise, club culture, synergy and compatible size.” Once the Memo of Understanding is finalised, the document will be made available to the members of both clubs for a minimum of 21 days before general meetings are held to approve the deal. The merger will require approval from the members of both clubs to proceed. Until the Memo is released, no details are available of the terms of the merger. Given so many residents are members of one or both of the clubs, The Bugle will outline the agreement in our next issue, and advertise the dates of the meetings.

Declan West: happiest in front of a camera He may be only 14, but Gerringong’s Declan West already has his acting career on track, with a string of credits to his name. His enthusiasm for making a life as an actor has him almost jumping out of his seat to explain what it means to him. “I love being in front of the camera, it is the place I’m meant to be,” he says. “Some people get this rush from being in a wave, but for me it comes from performing.” He’s been a popular host for various Nickelodeon Australia programs over the last three years, including hosting the Sydney premiere of The Grinch Movie at Fox Studios Sydney last year. He’s also appeared in a number of short films and commercials. After years of dedication, and his early success, his bemused parents accept this isn’t just a stage and are supporting him as he looks to promote his talent in the US. “I have no doubt that this is what he wants to do with his life. His focus is amazing and he works so hard to improve,” says his mother, Samantha.

Declan West hosting The Grinch Movie premiere at Fox Studios

He’s the first in the family to have this theatrical bent. Inspired by his first trip to LA for an intensive actors course with fellow students from Emily Stratten’s Kiama Actors School, Declan went back there in December to look for a manager. “He was successful in securing an experienced youth talent manager in the first five hours,” says Samantha. “We are now in the process of choosing an agent.” The talent manager, who work covers LA and New York, works closely with American Disney and Nickelodeon, and said she wanted to sign Declan up on

the spot because of his overall energy and experience. The Year 9 Edmund Rice student says his friends are supportive of his ambition. “Not many of them know what they want to do with their lives yet,” he says. To complement his acting, Declan does gymnastics tumbling, singing, dancing, surfing, scootering, bmx and skateboarding. “I’d love to get some bubbly fun roles, with some physicality. “A Peter Pan type role would be great!” Declan and his mother are planning to go to LA over the next few months to try and secure some work on the big screen.

Discover the Crop & Swap Kiama Crop & Swap is moving its monthly location from the Community Garden behind Blue Haven to Burnetts on Barney. “Crop & Swap was founded in 2016 as a community group based around making the most of the surpluses we have of seasonal produce in our backyard gardens,” says one of the founders, Angie Ritchie. “The group has grown into a beautiful sharing of knowledge, ideas, recipes, produce, flowers, baking and preserves, and expanded to Gerringong. “People bring what they can, and take what they can use. It’s not about taking things of equal value each time – it all works out in the end. “Come along and join in.” Kiama meets on the second Saturday of the month, and Gerringong the fourth Saturday, at the community garden behind Gerringong Bowling Club, 9am. To the Editor As everyone in Kiama knows, the harbour is a beautiful place. Even with thousands of tourists, markets and stuff going on, the area looks remarkably clean. What an awful shock to do the walk around the harbour and see the installation of great big stickers on the path, showing rubbish! Why would anyone want to spoil a lovely vista with this

awful pollution? Is there any way we can get these stopped? They are state government advertisements and I presume they are installed by council. Next they will be everywhere! Treat your Mum while helping children With their 60th anniversary under their belt, the hardworking members of CMRI Gerringong are not sitting on their laurels of having raised $2.25 million for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Their next big fundraiser will be their traditional Mother’s Day weekend High Tea and Fashion Parade. “The fashion parade will showcase fashions from Bombo Clothing, Beyond the Beach and Natural Necessity,” says Committee member Lorraine Peade. “CMRI members will again be models for the event, which is always lots of fun. “The range of fashions will appeal to all age groups.” The ticket price includes a glass of bubbly, and a delicious assortment of sweet and savoury treats made by CMRI members. “As well as great food and entertainment, there will be a multi-draw raffle for prizes donated by our very supportive local business community,” says Lorraine. “What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than an enjoyable afternoon out with your mother, grandmother, friends and family, while helping at the same time raising money for medical research? “This research is the key to finding cures for childhood diseases ranging from cancer

Over this time, Kids Helpline has responded to over 8 million contacts. For some young people, connecting with Kids Helpline has been a life-saving experience, while for others it’s about practical help and emotional support at the critical moment they need someone to listen. ProCan: CMRI’s cancer project Cancer currently kills eight million adults and children globally every year. ProCan is an international CMRI project, based at the CMRI’s purpose built facility at Westmead, that will save lives by making cancer diagnosis faster and more accurate. Through the project, CMRI scientists will analyse 70,000 cancers over the next five years. This will build a vast store of information so that in future, when a patient is diagnosed with cancer, their cancer can be analysed within 36 hours and to diagnosis the exact type and subtype of cancer. A personalised treatment plan will then be recommended, giving the patient the greatest likelihood of success. Doctors will be empowered with the information needed to choose the best treatment option for each individual patient, with fewer side effects.

Our communities have changed, the issues kids face have changed, and the ways our counsellors engage with and help young people have changed. What hasn’t changed is that Helplines make a difference to the emotional wellbeing and lives of our kids every single day — ensuring young people know they are not alone.

Church restoration still needs funds

The restoration of Kiama’s oldest operational building, and the first permanent church of any kind built in the Illawarra, is nearing completion, despite almost $50,000 more being needed to finance the project. “Our fundraising campaign raised about $105,000 [the majority from Church member offerings] which is excellent,” says Cliff Mason. “With the $100,000 NSW Government grant, we have been able to cover all but

about $48,000 of the total cost, the latter coming out of Church funds. “We are hoping Kiama Council may see its way clear to making a donation towards retaining Kiama’s oldest building, but that remains to be seen. Private donations are still welcome.” The old Lecture Hall now has a new roof and gutters, new hardwood flooring, new ceiling sections, new skirting boards and ducted air conditioning. A damp

course has allowed all salt to be removed from walls, and re-plastering and painting. The exterior is now closer to the original colour. The front doors are yet to be replicated and a new kitchenette installed. Out & about

At the 2019 KISS Arts Fest Festival Directors Dave Evans and Tamara Campbell estimate over 10,000 people attended the two day KISS Arts Fest at Black Beach, on a perfect Kiama weekend. This year the festival was the recipient of Festivals Australia funding for the first time and as a result presented a broad range of projects based on the five Japanese elements – Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and the Void. The Festival site was adorned with giant paper cranes and life sized origami cows. They climbed the beach to replicate the region’s first dairy cows which were unloaded into the waters of Kiama Harbour to finish their journey by swimming ashore. As always the Raft Race attracted a big crowd of onlookers and an unlikely collection of homemade boats. Plans are already afoot for the 2020 festival. Postcard home We recently drove a route in America that provided great reward for the distance travelled. Starting at Arches National Park near Moab in Utah, we ended at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The National Park system was once described as America’s best idea. The US had the first in the world. Australia comes second with our local Royal NP. Timing for the journey was challenging. We started in early April, a seasonal cusp as the USA goes into Spring, hoping to avoid most late season snow, but snow still fell at one high point in Utah. The locals recommend being prepared for four seasons in a day. There is an entry fee at each NP, around $30. We purchased an $80 Annual Pass at our first park, and it well and truly paid for itself. Our breath would be taken numerous occasions throughout the trip; it was not just the altitude. Each national park on our route was unique and had its own personality and individual attractions. You will find more than natural desert and mountain wonders on this route. History abounds with extensive evidence of early human existence. At Capitol Reef NP there are petroglyphs (carvings) and pictographs (pictures/drawings) on the monumental stonewalls dating from 300 until 1300 CE. Stepping through the Grand Escalante (‘Staircase’) area there are the echoes of early white settlers with

The Battle for Gilmore from p7 a majority of Australians are saying. We must act, without fear, stop burning fossil fuels and create a healthier and cleaner environment. Action will provide new local jobs, protect our environment, and lower our cost of living. It can be an exciting new opportunity. Gilmore, being regional, needs to have an injection of funds to improve all the services that communities deserve, including worldclass hospitals, health and aged care, mental health services, free public education from preschool to TAFE and university, full NDIS provision, accessible transport and infrastructure that good governments are expected to provide. sensational names like Hell’s Backbone, Box-Death Hollow, Hole in the Rock, Cedar Breaks, Spooky Canyon and Peak-a-boo. We visited Natural Bridges National Monument, Bryce Canyon (above) with its Fins (Canyon Walls), Windows and Hoodoos (bulbous spires). Zion

NP was one of our favourites; its vast scale made more intimate by access along the canyon floor. The finale was the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Warren and Deb McPherson Gerringong

Firstly, transition into twenty-first century technologies of renewable energy to 100% by 2030, encompassing more than 180,000 jobs; 100% electric cars and vehicles; net zero emissions by 2040, including manufacturing of zero carbon steel, and high-

density carbon fibre; exporting liquid hydrogen to Asia; and creating a healthier place to work and live. Secondly, but not less, that we become a more kind and compassionate country, looking after our most vulnerable, young and old, and once more, leading the way in how we treat people with the dignity and respect they deserve, no matter who, what beliefs they have, or from where they come. Of all your party's policies, which one are you most excited about?

The Greens strong plan to phase out fossil fuel powered energy by 2030, with a 10 year retraining plan to transition mining workers to clean new technology jobs. You perform so well, you are offered your choice of ministries. Which would you choose?

It would have to be The Arts because it is so neglected, and it is so important to people’s health and wellbeing.

The candidates had word limits for some questions, and are laid out in order of receipt.
