The Vietnamese Community in Australia has recognised Rick (Eric) Bensley’s role in the aftermath of the Battle of Long Tan by presenting him with the Republic of Vietnam’s Gallantry Cross Medal, a decoration given by South Vietnam to their troops to recognize valour and gallantry while serving in active combat against enemy forces.This Gallantry Cross had originally been presented to a Vietnamese soldier who then requested that, on his death, the medal be awarded to an Aussie soldier who had fought alongside the South Vietnamese, to say thank you.

A year ago, he was pre sented with a Citation of Honour certificate from the Vietnamese Community of Wollongong.“Havingcontact with the Wollongong Vietnamese Community has been won derful,” he says.

The Gerringong Volcanics constitute the oldest onshore preserved record of volcanic sediment which flowed into the Sydney Basin from a series of volcanic eruptions off our coast.

There are three rock types in Kiama: the Kiama sand stone, which is part of the Sydney Basin; Bombo Latite, which are the basalt columns found in the quarry; and the Blowhole basalt which came through later, around 57 million years ago.

The small change deposit ed by members of the public has been collected by Kiama Friends of Vision Australia to add to their fund raising over the years. The group has been going for nearly 60 years. It was originally called The Kiama and District Royal Blind Society Auxiliary and was formed when the Mayor of Kiama convened a public meeting on 30 April 1963 at the request of The Royal Blind Society.

At the beginning the aim was not fund raising, but to be a service to blind people in the district. In the early years the Auxiliary did assist and visit a lot of people in the local area who were blind or visionHoweverimpaired.inrecent years, fund raising has been the primary focus. Street stalls, afternoon teas, raffles, golf days, themed dinner dances and Bunnings BBQs have been held and since 1995 (the only records we have), over $180,000 has been passed on to Vision Australia which changed to this name

Basically, money raised since 2020 has been only from donations by individu als and Kiama Lions Club. Alyson: I respond to all cemetery enquiries, including sales of burial plots, ash plots and niches, and helping people locate existing and historical plots.

Alyson: We all recognise that people booking a plot or niche are usually going through quite a hard time. They are often grief stricken, and it is difficult to think straight and take in information when we lose a loved one.

I also conduct assessment of headstone and monument permits.

Kiama Council operates three cemeteries –Kiama (Bombo), Gerringong and Jamberoo. Last financial year we had around 100 burials and ash placements.

Alyson: For me, knowing that I have helped families in their time of need is heart warming, and families are always grateful for my help.

Alyson: At Kiama and Jamberoo Cemeteries, most of our burials and ash placements are for people who have purchased and/or reserved in advance.

Team player

Our team handles enquiries and bookings for plots, niches and burials, updating records in cemeteries as well as opening and closing of the graves and maintaining the cemeteries. We spoke to Alyson Hodgekiss – Executive Assistant to the Director of Engineering and Works, who manages our three cemeteries – and our Parks & Gardens Coordinator Guy Stearn about the work they do.

I do my best to guide and help families by giving them their options as clearly and simply as I can. It is very important to me to have clear paths of communication with the family, be understanding and maintain empathy.

How do you assign jobs?

Jaxon has been selected to play for the Australian Universities rugby league side when they take on the Australian Police and Australian Defence Forces sides in a tri-series in October. He also represented NSW Universities against QLD back in June.

It is also important to have good levels of communication with the outdoor cemetery crew and funeral director. We have an excellent outdoor crew at Kiama Council, they are very experienced and do an awesome job.

Guy: Because we’re a small council, it’s the same team doing parks & gardens maintenance and cemeteries. For example, the same machine and operator that digs graves also excavates road drainage and performs clean up after bad weather. However, burials take priority over any other maintenance work and Council recently invested in a second excavator, which certainly makes the juggle a little easier.

Alyson: Normally, if a full burial plot is required, the funeral director will organise it, but families can also come to us direct.

What’s the process for obtaining a plot or niche?

Guy: We are the team behind the scenes making a difficult time possible for families in grief. It’s important to us to ensure that when families visit their loved ones in the cemetery, the place is as well-presented as possible.

Also, this year there has been a lot of inclement weather, which meant some burials were delayed due to sodden ground that was unsafe to excavate, particularly at Kiama’s sea-level Bombo Cemetery.

Providing peace of mind

What does the outdoor team do?

I update the cemetery administrative records, including ash placements done by the crematorium, and keep our cemetery maps and plans up to date.

When not on representative duties he can be seen playing for his long-time club the Dapto NowCanaries.inthe third year of his apprenticeship, Jaxon says he enjoys the variety of work and challenges he gets at Council. This can include anything from fixing gates, to producing signs and Jaxontoolboxes.sayshe chose aluminium work as it’s a good skill to have, and one that’s in a lot of demand. He also credits his works depot colleagues for always being willing to take the time to help him improve his skills and experience.

You’re in touch with people during an emotional time. How do you manage that?

I liaise with funeral directors, families and our Parks & Gardens Coordinator for burial bookings, and organise plaques for families for modular niches.

Guy: People usually book with Aly seven to ten days in advance, which gives us time to inspect the plot and organise the resources. Aly does an excellent job and her attention to detail makes our lives easier operationally and gives us confidence we are digging in the right place.

It is very unfortunate when this happens and we appreciate families’ patience and understanding. Thankfully, we have always managed to find suitable outcomes for everyone involved.

“My father told me that I’d been rather rude.

Bill never called Bev by her name, he always called her ‘Beautiful’.ItwasBill who got Bev into sport. Bill played Rugby League for South Sydney. The two moved from Oatley to Gerringong 42 years ago. Together they raised a family, lived, laughed, golfed, roller skated, played tennis and were local lawn bowling champions. Sadly, Bill died 14 years ago.

Bev says that sometimes she is sad when she thinks that all her close family is gone, even her younger brother. Gerringong’s friendly community has been her support, she says, and Bev is treasured by all who meet her.

The local group, a key element of the internationally recognised Dementia Friend ly Kiama project, is currently without a support officer as Council seeks funding for the role.“There is so much other uncertainty at the moment, all tied up with the aged care reforms,” says Lynda.

“I think it is good to focus on supporting the Illawarra Forum as it has had a huge influence over the years.

He and wife Leane had always dreamed of retiring in Kiama, a place where they had holidayed every year since they married 43 years ago – “Leane’s parents holidayed here for 56 years, so it was a family tradition!” David says.
