F O U N D I N T R A N S L AT I O N Graduate Thesis, Winter 2017 Advisor: John Shnier
With designers utilizing traditional forms as branding tools, vernacular architecture has turned into a loaded and restrictive concept when in fact it is the manifestation of a region’s ever-changing needs, restrictions, and innovations — a form of collective visual memory materialized through architectural characteristics. Through the medium of miniatures, this thesis explores de-familiarizing Islamic architectural elements and re-purposing them in a non-biased and non-restrictive format, reducing them to their essence and lifting obsolete burdens imposed by tools and materials. The goal is to generate an architectural language that respects the integrity of precedents while transliterating vernacular concepts collectively perceived as “Islamic.”
1
In a series of formal investigations, this thesis takes traditional Islamic patterns, and allows them to be cross influenced with other narratives and aspects of the vernacular. This is done through a series of miniatures that represent certain stories and narratives about the contemporary Persian garden. A typology that while having adapted to our lifestyle, has kept its essential qualities and elements: the pavilion, the solid perimeter wall, a water fountain or reservoir, and rows of fruit trees and flowers, while always being regarded as a place of rest and refuge. New layouts and arrangements of the garden characterizes a “collective visual memory of the time of its construction.
2
Garden of No-Placeness Out of town Gardens today have become a place of refuge from the existing social oppressions, acting as oases of freedom.
3
The Pavilion Created through evolving the patterns surrounding it in the large drawing, the forms challenge facettedness of 3D Islamic geometry.
4
The Fountain of Life The traditional central water reservoirs are replaced by indoors swimming pools. The wall pattern here replaces lines and corners with intersecting curves.
5
The Observable Fortress Solid perimeter walls are replaced by perforated ones that maintain a visual connection to the outside while limiting access.
6
OPCIV COMMUNITY MUSEUM Design Studio 5, Fall 2015 Advisor: James MacGillivray
Agreeing with Venturi’s idea that “Less is a bore”, this project applies “Optical Architecture” (defined in relation to the “Op Art” of the 60s, optics and optical illusions) to the civic space of a museum located South of Christy Pits in Bickford park. It studies specific effects that occur in the subject’s retina, optic chiasm, and visual cortex in conjunction with the vestibular system. A number of optical phenomena are used to help define and alter one’s experience of a civic space, including moiré, propinquity, motion parallax, and enfilade. The museum offers an outdoor sculpture garden and a temporary gallery on the South, with a series of ticketed galleries and exhibition halls accessed through the North entrance on Bloor Street.

ARTS BRIDGE
Design Studio 4, Winter 2015 Advisor: Steven Fong Collaborator: Bohden Tymchuk
The Arts-Bridge is a community hub and bridge in one; gathering the community through arts, culture, and sports and bridging a major gap in the neighborhood. This connectedness and the nature of the Arts-Bridge as a nexus and catalyst for the redevelopment of the community will help foster urban growth and a successful, sustainable, vibrant neighborhood. With its green roof extrusion from the landscape, Arts-Bridge is stretched to bridge the Allen. The curved form of the building reflects the contours and pattern of streets and landscape surrounding it. The green roof insulates the building in the winter, cools it in the summer, and replaces valuable park spaces that the building would otherwise take up.

Designed around the theme of “water as play, Playscape Pools attempt to encourage the Fallingbrook community to engage with the waterfront on the south side of the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant. The complex offers hot and cold public pools and changing rooms, as wells as floating docks for canoing/kayaking.

Playing with the concept of pareidolia, this series of drawings builds on images that exist in a viewer’s visual memory, and relies on their impressionistic understanding of form to have their minds instantly translate the essence of the newly developed image into a comprehensive thought from something they have already experienced. While some of the drawings offer a critical commentary on a project, others simply try to be conveyors of discourse through playing with one’s perception of familiar images, patterns and forms.

TRCA HEADQUARTERS ZAS Architects + Interiors, 2019 JV with Bucholz McEvoy Architects
The new four storey mass timber headquarters for Toronto and Region Conservation Authority provides over 9,000 square meters of adaptive office space and demonstrates TRCA’s commitment to green infrastructure through incorporating strategies and technology for renewable energy, innovative wastewater management and integration with the ravine landscape. There is an emphasis on using wood species native to Ontario for the building’s numerous cladding types, structure, and interior. The building makes a conscious effort to achieve a smaller footprint through all life-cycle phases, with model simulations predicting over 50% reduction in operating emissions, and over 75% reduction in embodied carbon compared to the average Toronto building.

CANOE LANDING COMMUNITY CAMPUS ZAS Architects + Interiors, 2018
The complex houses a public and a Catholic elementary school, a childcare facility, a community recreation centre, and the Bentway head office, filling the void for a social and educational nexus in Toronto’s booming downtown core. Sustainability and resiliency are prominently integrated, including maximizing green roof opportunities and an introduction of photo-voltaic panels to generate 10% renewable energy. The building features a dynamic, “active” green roof – complete with a basketball court, jogging track and urban gardens which can serve the community while also accommodating a wide range of other social activities organized by the Bentway. Functioning as a natural extension of the adjacent Canoe Landing Park, the sloping green roofs sculpturally address both aesthetics and functionality, creating a “fifth elevation” rather than a typical roof. 29

U N I V E R S I T Y C O L L E G E R E V I TA L I Z AT I O N Kohn Shnier Architects, Summer 2016
The goal of this project is to make the historic University College building more accessible as well as creating dynamic new settings for student life, that would help recover the architectural identity of UofT’s founding college. The project improves accessibility across the building through the addition of an elevator, several ramps and pathways. It also oversees the design and relocation of the college’s Laidlaw library to its original location - the East Hall -, the transformation of the West Hall into a reading room, the addition of a student cafe on the third floor, and the transformation of Croft Chapter House into a conference centre.

BAHRAMI RESIDENCE ENV Office, 2012
Located in the historic garden-city of Isfahan, this 5 storey, 3 unit residence attempts to address the city’s ever-growing need for open spaces as its urban sprawl has led to the development of the majority of gardens historically surrounding it. This project -as it sits in the dense and over-developed neighboring lots- is a subtle anomaly in the streetscape. It values the importance of natural light and re-introduces the traditional Persian courtyard in the form of an individual private yard for each of the three units, in addition to a communal roof garden for all the residents to share and enjoy.
