Encounter
The experience of presence We hold no expectations on inner - city ventures, the focus is within the destination. The uniformity of highway signage, with generic information delivered at a glance, high-lights the ease at which they are forgotten. Despite the everyday activity of driving, many are forced into auto-pilot, barely recalling the journey they have just taken.
Something happened
To create a strong impression on the encounter, we have created an object without an obvious form. Through abandoning the visual solidity, and embracing the genuine spatial encounter, we attempt to differentiate the installation in the way of leaving impression: it does not carry a universal image, any message. This uncertainty highlights the structure, making it stand out within an on-lookers vision.
The task of architecture is to strengthen our sense of the real, not to create settings of mere fabrication and fantasy. The essential mental task of the art of building is mediation and integration. - Prof. Juhani Pallasmaa. Helsinki University

Persuading simple form
Constructing presence What happens when we remove what we originally thought was an integral part of a structure? By eliminating vertical and horizontal elements traditionally thought essential in any three-dimensional structure we force one to question how the structure is positioned with such grandeur. Tensegrity has a much lighter visual existence whilst being highly flexible, therefore responding to outside elements such as wind and water.

Bare visibility The overall irregularity is formed by the general form of Tensegrity, The use of polished stainless steel for the cords and beams allows us to create a unique illusion, the structure as a whole appears to lack opacity, but reflects it-self becoming quiet visible, igniting confusion from onlookers. This is incorporating space and reflection and the effects these two make when combined.

“Presence” is more than a roadway installation, it leads passer-byers to question their vision and what they originally perceived as reality.
