To produce a single illustration-lace, it takes a couple of hundred hours of bobbin lacemaking, plus the knowledge required to create a “collage” lace. While “normal” lacemaking usually employs two to three techniques, the collage version uses between twenty and twenty-five, it is a joint authorship of the illustrator and the lacemaker. The nondecorative potential of the depicted story is able to fully build up the artistic potentials. With lace it is very interesting that the works are in fact turned upside down during the entire procedure, so that you actually don’t know what they will look like until the end – it is because the material is very brittle. Lace is very feminine. But even the male figure is delicate. “The male world” falls off on its own, it has been replaced by Sobočan with the “female world”, but in a form he knew well – through stereotypes. He was mostly inspired by pop-culture, as it would be difficult to derive from folk art drawings in the beginning of the 21st century.

Urh Sobočan completed his BA Visual Communication studies in 2005, followed by a MA degree from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He lives in Luxemburg, working for a large corporate advertising agency. Before that, he made his living as an illustrator in London, working mostly for various publishers and advertising agencies. He also worked three years for the Slovenian daily newspaper supplement (Sobotna priloga). What stands out most from his body of work is the cycle of lace illustrations, which he created together with his grandmother Iva Sobočan. The crude, punk-like esthetics is transferred to the fragile, white medium of lace, intertwining the biblical iconography with the pornographic one. Sobočan’s grandmother Iva from Žiri is one of the most recognized lacemakers in Slovenia, while this handicraft has continued in the family for over four generations.

Polsteni izdelki Felt products Diana Mureškič eksperimentira z volno v tehniki suhega polstenja in uporablja tradicionalno mokro in nuno tehniko polstenja. Poleg oblek, zgornjih delov, kril, telovnikov, korzetov, plaščev in pokrival oblikuje tudi šale, torbe, obuvala, nadlahtnike, prstane, verižice, uhane, blazine in družabne igre (Kače in lestve). Diana Mureškič experiments with wool using the dry felting technique, as well as the traditional wet and nuno felting techniques. The latter is a highly creative form of felting, where wool for felting is combined with other natural materials (fabrics, ribbons, lace ...). In nuno felting, the wool laid down for felting is complemented with a range of various natural materials: silk, remia, cotton, bamboo fibers... Apart from dresses, tops, skirts, waistcoats, corsets, coats and headgear she also designs scarfs, bags and purses, footwear, arm warmers, rings, necklaces, earrings, cushions and board games (Snakes and ladders).

Pletenine Knitwear Unikatne pletenine so polne barvnih poigravanj in različnih oblik. S svojo močno barvno izraznostjo in kombiniranjem različnih vlaken in tehnik vnaša v tekstilije in pletenine svežino in enkratno mehkobno prileganje oblačil. These unique knitwear products are brimming with colors and various forms. Natural materials like wool, silk and cotton are intertwined into a mesh of textures, tactile senses and free forms alluding to erotic female body parts. Aleksandra Ilić’s products are works of art, fiber sculptures rather than pieces of clothing, as they are created in moments of inspiration from uniquely designed knitted materials. They fit exceptionally gently. With a powerful color expression and skillful combinations of various fibers and techniques, Aleksandra introduces a freshness and one-of-a-kind sensation to her textiles and knitwear.

Where else do we find revisionism in action? Take a look at an IKEA catalog. Again and again we find the names and photographs of the designers, but where are the names and likenesses of the legions of humans in Asia who are making, for pennies, the knicknacks and LEGO-for-adults we enjoy? /.../ You know those indigenous tribes around the world that everyone pretends to admire? How about we actually learn something from indigenous tribes? Where, in tribal life of the most ancient kinds, do you see any separation between art and everyday life?

Virtuozni igralec medija – lesa, v njegovih tisočerih različicah in poetikah, ob postopkih struženja in tesanja sanja drugačne, paralelne svetove, polne igrivih domislic. Večnamenska funkcionalnost, asociativnost in univerzalnost preproste, toda povsem avtorske inventivne forme: kuhalnica, golf palica ali kaj drugega? Multiplicirana svastika ali DNA formula? Asociativne igre napotijo gledalca in uporabnika h globljemu premisleku. Črtanec’s attitude towards wood is enigmatic, since wood as material is losing its material nature; the formed softness denies the proverbial hardness of wood, and thereby also the argument of medieval engravers, who were using their designing approach to emphasize the hardness of wood and create a striped structure, as if it were impossible to curve it, round it off or soften it. Like a conceptual perpetuum mobile, the artist’s yin-yang is reflected in relations between material and form, which are never unambiguous. In its countless versions and poetics, alongside the processes of planing and chiseling, a true virtuoso of the medium – wood, dreams of different, parallel worlds full of subversive, playful ideas. Multi-purpose functionality, associativity and universality of the simple, yet entirely original inventive form: a wooden spoon, a golf club or something else? A multiplied swastika or the DNA formula? Associative games lead the viewer to a deeper consideration. Črtanec’s wooden “rocks” express the perfection of individual simple shapes. When composing a mass, their basic shapes establish complex, non-repeating forms – identical elements, stripped to the minimum are different from Črtanec’s minimalism, which takes you to a side street you have never visited before, and makes you discover sensually the beauty of touching the form and material (“shining like polished mirror”).

Jože Šubic’s visual ideas based on two-dimensional painting surfaces, which had by then become more and more marked by sensual layers of color and non-typical materials (unlike his earlier figural works), have regularly extended into three-dimensional space and solid (corpo)reality. His spatial installations include ceramic-made items from the everyday life and organic materials, which are transformed into objects charged with meaning, whose associative potential addresses the viewer in more than one dimension.

The products from hand-processed clay by Diana Mureškič are composed of various types of natural clay. They are distinguished by subtle form, which appreciates the fragility and (im)permanence of the material, as well as its natural structuring in terms of color and form. Getting to know the substance, the soil, the medium – is vital for the creative process. Touching the clay with your hands and fingers; firsthand communication with the material that changes and is never repeated – and cannot be fixed either – this is the core of the creative process. The clay comes alive in the reflections and blurriness of the images, in a constant flow of appearing and disappearing, and in the awareness of transience. The focus is placed on the traditional everyday practices, which are highly estheticized. Diana Mureškič employ a variety of techniques, handbuilding, raku…

Njena dela hranijo v pomembnih likovnih zbirkah (Banka Slovenije, UGM Maribor, Talum Kidričevo, Muzej Palazzo Forti Verona, Slovenski kulturni center Korotan na Dunaju). Ure Ku-ku (Maribor, Slovenija, Bled) so monokromne, lasersko izrezane in suhoprašno lakirane jeklene plošče z izrisanimi silhuetami prepoznavnih značilnosti mesta oziroma dežele. Polona Maher graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy (1999), and in art education from the Faculty of Education in Maribor (2000). She continued her studies at the Faculty of Art, Media and Design in Bristol (UK). Her works have been shown at solo exhibitions in Slovenia (Maribor, Ljubljana, Ptuj) and abroad (Bolzano, Milano, Bologna, and Brescia in Italy), and at numerous group exhibitions. Her works are kept in several important fine art collections (Bank of Slovenia, Maribor Art Gallery, Talum Kidričevo, Museum Palazzo Forti Verona, Slovenian Cultural Center Korotan in Vienna). Polona Maher’s explorations take place in the midway space between drawing and sculpture, using various materials and approaches. The wall clock series ‘Ku-ku’, created in 2008, belongs to the field of applied arts. The ‘Ku-ku’ clocks (Maribor, Slovenia, Bled) are monochromatic, laser-cut and dry-sand varnished steel plates with outlined silhouettes of the typical features of a particular town or country. The Maribor clock thus outlines the contours of the Maribor Cathedral and the Franciscan church, the Water Tower, Judgement Tower and the Old Vine in Lent, the Drava River with swans, and the Piramida hill with its vineyards.

Avtorji Urh Sobočan in Iva Sobočan (čipke), Diana Mureškič (polst in keramika), Marko Črtanec (lesno oblikovanje), Aleksandra Ilić (pletenje) in Cameron Bobro (tradicionalne lesne tehnike) izhajajo in nadgrajujejo obstoječe postopke tradicionalnih obrti v sedanjosti. ARTKIT

ARTKIT is a space inside the Maribor Town Hall (located at the address of Glavni trg 14, in the old part of the city). The place is owned by the Municipality of Maribor, while its program is led by the Association for Culture and Education KIBLA. ARTKIT is part of the idea of revitalizing the old city center and many of its abandoned or deserted areas; it is intended for artists, designers and artisans, who put their creativity to use by developing traditional handicraft skills and designing unique products, while at the same time they are looking for potential collaborations with companies, which could realize such ideas in the form of small-scale designer production line series. The basic idea is to popularize the materials and treatment procedures behind primary materials, which are part of the heritage of our ancestors, but are now gradually disappearing inside the consumer industry of cheap products made from cheap materials and by means of cheap working procedures. The revitalization of old artisan procedures, not in the sense of producing replicas, but rather as an upgrade of the existing traditional craftsmanship procedures, is a way of preserving the disappearing mobile cultural heritage in a contemporary manner (lacemaking, felting, knitting and sewing, woodwork and metalwork, ceramics, objects ...), and at the same time actively searching for contacts with producers on local, national and international markets.

Authors Urh Sobočan and Iva Sobočan (lace illustration), Diana Mureškič (felt, ceramics), Marko Črtanec (wood design), Aleksandra Ilić (knitwear) and Cameron Bobro (traditional carpentry techniques) derive from and enhance existing traditional craftsmanship procedures in the present. Contemporary 3D design and printing offers the possibility of creating a line of products, which is one of ARTKIT’s primary focuses. Artists Borut Popenko, Marko Jakše, Simona Šuc, Jože Šubic, Matjaž Krivic and Polona Maher contribute with paintings, objects and motifs, which are handcraft creations par excellence or handcraft images. In the renaissance spirit of the Maribor Town Hall, a 500-year-old building, with reminiscences of genre social images of the Italian renaissance painter Sofonisba Anguissola, the exhibition space also offers board games Memory, with reproductions of artworks by Marko Jakše, Urh Sobočan and Iva Sobočan, Borut Popenko, ARTKIT products, felt- and textile-made Snakes and ladders by Diana Mureškič in physical form and also as digital versions for online and mobile devices. The ARTKIT online store offers a chance to view and purchase products and browse through the stop-motion presentations of clothing items, while the electronic and printed versions of the ARTKIT smart book provide a catalog overview of products and 3D presentations of individual objects, video clips and websites, supported by a mobile application.
