The intersection at Balmoral Road & Highway 1 in Sorrento has long posed a driving hazard to those who use it. The combination of speed, poor sight lines and traffic volume have caused this inter-

section to become a frequent crash zone.

Sadly, on September 1st, an accident occurred at this corner claiming a life of yet another driver. The purpose of this petition is to garner signatures from community members to strongly advocate for redesign of this intersection to ensure safety and efficiency for all. Ministry of Transportation and elected government officials will receive copies of the Petition. Thank you for supporting this important initiative.

Karen says this most recent accident presents a “call to action”. At the time of close for this issue of the Scoop, only days after the petition was initiated, nearly 1900 people had signed the online petition on Change.org. Sign up has been brisk and this number is increasing very quickly. It’s looking like the ‘call’ has been heard.

Davis found not guilty of Blind Bay Shooting

By Barbra Fairclough Nick Larsen, 24, was shot to death in Blind Bay on June 1, 2011. Jeremy Davis was found not guilty in BC Supreme Court last month, after facing a manslaughter charge for his involvement in the shooting death. He was formerly charged with second-degree murder.

Davis and Jordan Barnes were both arrested and charged in 2014 at the end of an undercover RCMP operation. Barnes pleaded guilty in 2016 to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life behind bars with no chance of parole for 10 years.

Barnes claimed he and Larsen were involved in a turf war over drug sales in Blind Bay the day prior to the shooting.

According to Barnes, Larsen pointed a gun

at his chest and told him to stop selling drugs in the community.

Barnes testified against Davis in February, saying he got into the passenger seat of Davis’ SUV, with Davis at the wheel, to go searching for Larsen in Blind Bay. Barnes told the court he saw a handgun slide out from under the passenger seat and he used it to kill Larsen.

Barnes changed his story in April, saying he had brought the gun, put it under the seat and used it on Nick Larsen, and that Davis had nothing to do with it.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Dev Dley said there were discrepancies in evidence but the Crown did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt, which led to the decision to find Davis not guilty.

PACs raise funds through a variety of activities. The Carlin Country Market day held each year attracts hundreds of residents and visitors and generates most of the funds used by the Carlin Elementary and Middle School PAC. Other PACs generate funds with various special events and grant applications to BC Gaming and the CSRD. Each PAC is self-directed by an executive committee. All parents of children attending school are automatically included as members of their school PAC, free-ofcharge. Meetings are usually held once a month, except for the summer months, and all members are entitled to vote on various issues. Annual general meetings are held once a year, which is when the executive committees are elected by the members.

Sunnybrae Evacuation Orders Rescinded

The residents of 4467 and 4473 Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road are now permitted to return to their property but will remain on Evacuation Alert and must be prepared to evacuate on short notice should weather conditions deteriorate or site conditions warrant reevacuation.

Occupants (owners, tenants and visitors) should immediately leave their properties if the following conditions are observed: Perceived increase or a sudden, drastic reduction in stream flow; Visible increase and sustained turbidity in the stream; Audible noises that indicate earth movement, rolling rocks, channel material mobilization, or tree roots cracking; Any other unusual earth movement or stream channel migration The four properties located at 4459,4467, 4473 and 4487 all remain under Evacuation Alert.

“The Evacuation Order was downgraded to an Alert on June 23, 2017 based on the recommendation received by a qualified geotechnical consultant and that the alert be kept in place until the creek channel is re-established across both lots”, says Darcy Mooney, Manager of Operations for the CSRD. The provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) is currently completing restorative works on these lots at Robinson Creek.

Roy Sharp long time resident of Sunnybrae died as a result of the second. In the last year the community rallied and on May 25th this spring friends and family of Roy Sharp as well as CSRD Board Chair Rhona Martin and Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo, gathered at the Robinson Creek Park to honor Roy in its renaming to Roy Sharp Community Park.

This park has a wheelchair friendly trail with accessible parking, a memorial bench and toilet.

Chamber Advocates for Changes To Balmoral Road & Highway 1 Many in the community may have heard that tragically, another life was lost at the Balmoral & Hwy 1 intersection on Saturday September 1st. The South Shuswap Chamber Board of Directors had been in conversation with Ministry of Highways officials about that very corner in late Spring of this year. A follow up meeting has now been scheduled for October 12th with Ministry officials. Chamber Board members, together with MLA Greg Kyllo and Area C Director Paul Demenok, will be advocating on behalf of the community for changes to be made to that corner to ensure future safety for all who use that intersection.

In response to a large outpouring from the community following this tragic accident, a community petition demanding changes to the Balmoral & Hwy 1 intersection is currently available to sign online.

Moving Forward with a “Revitalization Project” at Eagle Bay

By Cathy Wolf on behalf of the Eagle Bay Community Association The Eagle Bay Community Association ((EBCA) has been recently working with the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) to understand possibilities to revitalize the area surrounding the Eagle Bay Community Hall. As some of you will know, facilities there such as the tennis court, picnic area, and playground area are in need of significant upgrades.

This past spring, members of the EBCA had voted on a new constitution that addressed the need to plan, initiate,

host and support a variety of recreational and leisure activities suited to the need of residents. Discussions soon followed with the CSRD to identify specific next steps to moving forward with a plan to “revitalize” the grounds surrounding the Community Hall. The CSRD had the area surveyed and worked with the EBCA Board Committee to identify possibilities for further discussion with members of the Association.

As reported in the July “Scoop”, the site map and conceptual drawings for the area were presented at Eagle Bay Day on August 4. These drawings suggested that pickle ball courts, a tennis court, new playground facilities, a covered picnic area, toilets, a drinking fountain, and adult fitness area were considerations. There was significant interest in the project and community members were invited to attend a general meeting later in the month to vote on a go-forward plan.

On August 23 a general meeting of the EBCA membership was called to vote on granting permission for the EBCA Board

of Directors to negotiate and approve a statutory right-of-way for community recreational needs with the CSRD within 18 months. The meeting was well attended.

Questions and comments were welcomed by the Board Committee. Critical to the discussion was the issue of maintenance and how facilities would be upgraded and maintained over time. Having the CSRD take responsibility for maintaining toilets, emptying and cleaning garbage cans, inspecting playground equipment, watering grass and trees, cleaning picnic tables and playground equipment daily were some of the issues identified. A budget in the range of $150,000.00 - $250,000.00 was also identified for the design and final construction of the area. Funds would be provided by the CSRD through the Parks budget for Area C. Other questions focused on insurance and liability issues, design considerations, timelines, additional costs to the EBCA, and ongoing community consultation.

brought forward, the vote was taken. It was unanimous. All members attending voted in favour of moving forward with the project. So now, we will move on to next steps.

Over the fall and early winter further consultation with community members will take place in order for members to provide input regarding design and layout of the area. Opportunities to attend public sessions along with an allmembers online survey will inform planning and will be shared back to the community.

The tentative timeline for the project is for community consultation to take place throughout 2018, design completion and demotion begins in 2019, with project completion in 2020.

Highway Maintenance Contract

By Jo Anne Malpass The bidding process has closed for the highway maintenance contract for Service Area 13 – Okanagan Shuswap.

A Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesman said the current contract for Okanagan Shuswap, held

by JPW Road & Bridge Inc., is set to expire on March 31, 2019.

The Request for Proposal for Okanagan-Shuswap was on BC Bid and closed on August 24.

“Ministry staff will now evaluate all qualified respondents, and the preferred proponent will be announced by the end of September.”

Service Area 13 goes from south of Vernon to north of Seymour Arm and from Monte Creek to Craigellachie. The area includes Areas C, D, E and F of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.

B.C.’s highways and bridges are maintained by private contractors in 28 service

areas throughout the province.

The procurement process for 26 of the 28 maintenance service areas is currently underway. The Province will award contracts with a 10-year term and an optional five-year extension.

Private contractors are responsible for maintaining provincial highways year-round in their service area. They repair and maintain the driving surface (such as asphalt and gravel), the roadside upkeep in addition to handling bridge and winter maintenance.

Some examples of the contractor’s duties include: Pothole patching, Maintenance of gravel roads, Signage maintenance, Bridge repair, Crack sealing, Snow and ice control, Drainage management and Traffic management.

CSRD Recognized For Achieving Carbon Neutrality Submitted by Tracy Hughes The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) has been awarded the highest level ‘Achievement of Carbon Neutrality’ from the Provincial-Union of BC Municipalities Green Communities Committee.

The Level 4 award comes after the CSRD successfully met the goal of corporate carbon neutrality for the 2017 reporting year.

To become carbon neutral, an organization, business or government measures its carbon footprint, reduces that footprint as much as possible each fiscal year, offsets any emissions that cannot be reduced and reports on greenhouse gas emissions.

A formal letter of recognition was received by the CSRD along with the use of a BC Climate Action Community 2017 – Climate Leader logo.

The CSRD has a long history of taking action to reduce corporate emissions. In 2007-2008, the CSRD became a signatory to the BC Climate Action Charter, along with 182 other local governments. It has measured and reported carbon emissions since 2010. The CSRD has been recognized numerous times for its commitment to achieving the goals of the Climate Action Charter.

Part of the CSRD’s success in achieving carbon neutrality comes from the nationally recognized Salmon Arm Landfill Gas Capture Project. In this unique partnership arrangement, methane gas is captured from the closed landfill operation and is then processed by Fortis BC into usable gas for distribution to homes and businesses in Salmon Arm. In addition, the CSRD has been working on improving fleet management and incorporating carbon neutral initiatives into planning exercises.

White Lake 5th Annual Fun Day BBQ September 15

By Barbra Fairclough The White Lake Residents Association is putting on a Barbeque and inviting the whole community to come on down to the hall. It’s a full agenda ensuring something for everyone at the Fifth Annual Fun Day on September 15th, from noon to 5pm.

There will be live entertainment including Bongo the Clown and face painting is always popular.

Have you ever wondered how many pies you can eat? The pie eating contest is something you can dive right into. Not for the faint of heart!

Winners of the WLRA photo contest will be announced and prizes will be awarded for the top 3 categories in each entry.

Summer fare of hamburgers and hotdogs will be on the grill so the whole family can enjoy a bite to eat.

The Quaaout Lodge Cultural Department will be hosting a Drum Making Workshop as well. The Barbeque is a drop in event so come and stay as long as you like but if you are interested in the Drum Making workshop you will need to book ahead.

The workshop is 1.5 to 2 hours and all your supplies are included for $90. Seats are limited. Contact Cindy at 250 463 1752 to book ahead. The White Lake Residents Association will be giving away a free drum making workshop to the 25th person through the door at the White Lake Hall.

Proceeds from this event go to the White Lake Residents Association and will assist with community needs. This is a great opportunity to meet with neighbours and friends. If you have visitors, bring them down to the hall for the afternoon.

Media Release Paul Demenok is very pleased to announce that he will be running for re-election as Electoral Area C Director in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District in the October election.

When asked about his reasons for running again, Demenok replied, “There is a significant number of important projects initiated in the South Shuswap which will benefit from a high level of continuity as they are implemented through to completion. Most notably, these include the Restructuring Study, Shuswap Economic Development Plan, Parks Plan, Liquid Waste Management Plan, and the South Shuswap Non-Profits Network.

A lot of time and effort has gone into developing these projects and plans, but I would like to see them through to completion. Outside of Area C, there still is much work to be done with the Shuswap Watershed Council, and I would really like to see that vision being realized as well. Personally, I enjoy representing the South Shuswap and the challenge that this important work provides.”

Demenok was first elected to represent Area C in 2012 and is now completing his second term as CSRD Director. He is Chair of the Shuswap Watershed Council and Chair of the Electoral Area Directors Committee at the CSRD. The election will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018.

By Jerre Paquette At High Croft Farm’s sunny 88 acres near Sorrento, people from all over the Shuswap come to buy pastureraised chicken, lamb, beef, and eggs, plus veggies and fruit in season, and sometimes turkey. In the near future, the farm’s permaculture food forest will produce nuts, tree fruits, and berries. It’s an eclectic mix of groceries for Shuswap dinner plates.

This variety of delicious and nutritious food explains the farm’s growing appeal with local folks, but international visitors (mostly educated youth from as far away as France, Spain, Chile, Australia, and Germany) are coming here, too.

What is it about High Croft Farm that’s attracting people from around the world, and why are they staying for weeks or even a year? The answers involve knowing something about the farm’s owners: husband and wife team Ernest Moniz and Una St.Clair.

Other than Ernest’s impressive business resumé and Una’s childhood adventures with her father on his veterinary rounds in the Scottish highlands, there’s not much in their backgrounds to suggest

they would, together, build a farm that would attract the world.

But there were some clues: Thirty years ago, the two already were attending lectures on climate change and coming to realize that the world is on a destructive path. In 2013, that insight prompted them to buy the land that would become their family farm.

The property was in a sorry state with no hint of the farm to come: just the sinister remnants of a substantial drug operation and tons of garbage.

Nevertheless, Una says they recognized a remarkable opportunity to produce both food and hope—and to do things their own way.

It’s a way driven by their mutual observations that, between climate change and universal mismanagement of the world’s resources, we all are facing a real threat. Rather than giving in to feeling powerless, Ernest and Una nurtured the tenacious belief that returning to the earth, to ground oneself, would help them and others find a better way forward.

Cedar Heights Community Association

By Shaunne Letourneau Fall is definitely in the air – with cooler mornings, school buses on the road and our summer visitors have headed home. At Cedar Heights our outdoor programs are in their final weeks and there is much activity as indoor programs and events get underway.

Golf Course Construction - The long-awaited reconstruction of the golf course began on Tuesday, September 4th. The construction will involve major re-contouring of the fairways and greens construction in the area of the existing Greens 1, 8 and 9.

Green 9 will be enlarged and converted to a putting green.

In addition, the 30-year-old irrigation system will be over-

hauled. The Golf Course closed for the season September 4 to allow for these renovations.

Volunteer Appreciation – “The heart and soul of Cedar Heights Community Association is the volunteers. From Fitness instructors to board members to movie night popcorn makers to dishwashers, the willing hands and minds of our members make our organization friendly, productive and a joy to be a part of” says Hilary Brown, CHCA President.

DON'T let layering get the best of you.

Layering is the perfect strategy for extending your summer faves into fall but keep it simple. The key is to make sure you have no more than three levels of layering going on.

Equipped with a curious and open mind, Alexandra’s love of Mathematics was evident in grade 7 when she became bored and decided to memorize the digits of Pi to pass the time in class. Enrollment in an accelerated program provided Alexandra with the challenge and stimulation that she craved, allowing her to excel. Alexandra is grateful for the guidance provided by the teachers at Salmon Arm Secondary. Participating in volunteer work abroad in Rural China and Ecuador with the school district exposed Alexandra to the inequities in our world and has sparked her interest in addressing some of

those through her career. Being part of the inaugural Salmon Arm Youth Council and Politics class in grade 12, Alexandra attended UBCM, and the Forum for Young Canadians, furthering her understanding of the role of being a global citizen who contributes to their community, country, and world.

Alexandra is enrolled in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo and is pursuing her goal of finding solutions to the problems of tomorrow. The Shuswap Community Foundation, through the “Morris Bursary Fund for Excellence in Mathematics”, is one of the many ways the Foundation has worked since 1994 to connect people who care with causes that matter.

Salute to the Sockeye 2018

By Darlene Koss The Adams River Salmon Society This is the year ~ 2018 ~ every 4 years is the dominant year for the Sockeye to return to their spawning grounds.

This year’s event for the Salute to the Sockeye will begin on Friday September 28 and will run through till Sunday October 21.

Special Note from President Don Paterson: In addressing the concerns for the salmon, the whole community must assume responsibility for the response to the challenge. Everyone is in, no one is out. Please come to Tsútswecw Provincial Park to share your ideas and help call the salmon home.

Preparations are well underway for the 2018 Adams River salmon spawning season (mid/late September thru late October) in the traditional territory of the Secwepemc First Nations people. The Adams River Salmon Society volunteers are fine tuning the following events: 2018 Salute to the Sockeye Events, the Shuswap Salmon Symposium, assisting with the Wild Salmon Caravan Events and the Interpretive WalkAbouts with Salmon Society guides, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), BC Parks - Park Rangers, Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band, Secwepemc Fisheries, and Pacific Salmon Foundation.

Another special and unique event will be the renaming of the Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park to the Secwepemc First Nations name - Tsútswecw Provincial Park (meaning many tributaries or many rivers). Everyone is invited to join in this Renaming Ceremony and Celebration with the Haig Brown family, the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band, BC Parks and The Adams River Salmon Society and provincial and federal guests.

The Opening Ceremony and the Official Renaming will occur on September 30 at 1:00pm. Dignitaries from all orders of government, including First Nations, have been invited.

There are a number of other reasons to come check out the festival. Highlights include educational displays and demonstrations by BC Parks, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and multiple non-government organizations, artisan and souvenir shopping, local food vendors (yum bannock!), and the beautiful walking trails in the autumn.

Artisan Market: We are welcoming back many of those cherished artisans from the 2014 Salute. Additionally, we are delighted to present 17 new and First Nations artisans into the "Salute" family.

The Shuswap, Thompson and Okanagan regions are rich with talented, dynamic and professional artists who effectively showcase this area. Again, the dominant theme is salmon; sprinkled with fun and cheeky relevant examples of this exciting and beautiful part of BC. The artisan tent will have photography, pottery, sculpture, painting, prints, nature art, jewellery, glass and fabric art and baskets made of birch bark, pine needle and cedar. As well, a variety of children's items such as colouring books, toys, blankets and clothing.

Educational Activities: As in previous years, DFO and its partners will be providing ON-SITE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS to an anticipated 10,000 British Columbian elementary school students in grades 2 – 5. Teachers wishing to register their class in the Educational Interpretive Program should contact DFO directly by emailing DFO.PACSalute2018.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

Salute Parking: To accommodate the influx of people who will come out to enjoy Tsútswecw Provincial Park during the Salute (past Salutes have seen approximately 200,000 people), special arrangements are being made. Traffic control people will be helping manage the flow of traffic over to the north shore during busy periods (e.g., weekends/Thanksgiving). Volunteer parking attendants will greet park guests to help maximize the available parking space. Arrangements are being made for a bus service between Kamloops and Salmon Arm to help locals attend the Opening Ceremony as well as during the Thanksgiving weekend (more information on this at www.salmonsociety.com).

Admission fees to the festival are only $2 a person/$5 a car, to support the running of the festival (e.g. portable toilets, security, site maintenance, first aid, etc.). A small cost to pay to enjoy this natural phenomenon in style!

Interpretive Cabin: Our Cabin continues to see much and growing traffic, including international guests, as the run approaches.

Three large Salmon Statues have been placed in front of the cabin. The photoop board and the touch screen games continue to be a hit with our younger guests.

An interesting note gleaned from ‘Everything Shuswap’: “Chief Sehowtken was a powerful chief who commanded much respect. He was baptized in 1849 and was given the name Adam. Journals indicate he lived until 1867 and that the river and the Lake were named in his honour.”

The Radical Improv Comedy Show Returns to Sunnybrae Community Hall September 15

For those of you who missed the packed-out show in June, The Radical specializes in audience directed comedy, so expect a lot of crowd participation, unforeseen entertainment and high energy laughs! June was actually the first live, improv Comedy show I'd been to and I really do recommend the experience!

Once again this is a collaboration between the Arts Council For The South Shuswap and the Sunnybrae Community Association. There will be a licensed cashbar (sorry, no minors at this event) serving beer, local wine from Sunnybrae Vineyards & Winery and some coffee & snacks on the side. Joining them will be Sons of Bitumen, who last visited us earlier in the year for the Shuswap Culture Crawl. With his Dobro and a stack of whole-hearted originals, Sam will be joining us from beautiful Hope, BC. Accompanied on guitar by one of the Shuswap's heavy hitters Jake Verburg, this brotherly duo dwell deep in the depths of both acoustic and electric sound.

Whatever they may choose this time round, you can count on it being a bold, moving and exceptional performance.

Last to mention but definitely not least, Salmon Arm's Jake McIntrye-Paul will be making an appearance as special guest for the night, supporting on bass. Arts Council for the South Shuswap

By Karen Brown, Arts Council Administrator It’s Not Too Late to Register For Fall Classes In Dance & Music FACES programming in the arts for children and teens from age 3 to 18 is now underway! It is not too late to register for the year for classes in: ballet, musical theatre, jazz, acro, contemporary/ lyrical, modern and hip hop. As well private music lessons offer voice, guitar, ukulele, banjo, piano, violin, flute, clarinet, trombone, trumpet and saxophone.

The Arts Council receives granting support through the BC Arts Council and from various levels of government to assist with offsetting tuition rates for this nonprofit program. For example, a year’s tuition for higher level dance will run a family approximately $360 for the year, which is very economical compared to other programs. This is ONLY made possible by the generous support of the BC Arts Council, the Shuswap Community Foundation, BC Touring Council, CSRD and other granting agencies.

By Stefan Schielke Today’s hectic, computer-based workplaces often require one to sit for hours, with additional time spent sitting for eating and driving. Health experts agree that sitting for prolonged lengths of time has a negative effect on the body. Taking regular breaks is important for our eyes, our muscles, and our mental alertness.

For our eyes, there are a couple of exercises that could be done throughout the day. These exercises allow our eyes to focus on something other than our screens, thereby reducing the risk of our eyes tiring. First, the “20-20-20 rule”. This involves looking at an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. Next, look at a far away object for 10-15 seconds, then look at something close for 10-15 seconds, then back to the distant object. Repeat 10 times.

Our muscles need to be active to keep the blood flowing, improve our flexibility and reduce the risk of injury. Taking a short break every hour to stretch our muscles should be a regular part of our day. A quick Google search for “workplace stretches” will provide many options. Find some that work best for you and your workspace.

Another great option, becoming more popular, is a standing desk. Standing is a great way to take the pressure off your back and helps keep your blood flowing. Many large office buildings provide this as an option for employees. One can choose a straight standing desk, where the whole desk is elevated, or a convertible desk where one can be standing, sitting or raised to a higher chair.

Although it may sound counterproductive, taking a break from our work can, in fact, increase our productivity. When we pause to release stress from our mind and bodies, we can come back to our work with clear concentration, new ideas and renewed energy.

Not Always According to Plan

By Rob Marshall In David Richo's book entitled "The Five Things We Cannot Change..." he outlines what he calls five unavoidable givens.

1. Everything changes and ends.

2. Things do not always go according to plan.

3. Life is not always fair.

4. Pain is part of life.

5. People are not loving and loyal all the time.

Although it is worth reflecting upon each of these givens and to note how each impacts on both our personal and business lives, it is the second "given" that we may find ourselves struggling with at certain stages.

Many times we have an idea or goal in mind, something that seems important to us in achieving. We have become invested in a particular outcome, whether it is of a personal or business nature. We become entrenched in focusing that this is the only endpoint we will accept.

There are times when things happen outside of our control, that throw a wrench into our plans. As well thought out and developed as our plans might be, these external circumstances may have shifted the playing field. They may have thrown up barriers, making our plan ob-

solete or at least delayed it indefinitely.

What happens when we suddenly realize that our planned expectations will not be realized? How do we handle the disappointment? How do we make the best of it?

It is at times like these that our reactions and actions are crucial to overcoming the roadblocks. Blaming and complaining only exacerbate our steps, as negativity gets in the way of moving ahead. By focusing on the negatives, we are impeding steps forward.

Once we realize the plan has been thwarted in some way, we need to accept the change of plan and shift to constructively moving forward. Without dwelling on the reasons that our plans will not be realized, we do need to reflect and ask ourselves questions that will lead us to positive solutions.

What was important to us about this particular plan? What were we trying to accomplish? What did we learn from the development of the plan that can be used going forward? Had we considered other plans before arriving at our desired strategy?

In asking ourselves these and other questions, we may find ourselves pursuing new ideas and

By Jill Goward Apart from a few beautiful weddings, Notch Hill Town Hall has seen little activity over the summer. That hasn’t stopped a few loyal members from diligently looking after the property. Between Anita, Marian, Sheila, Heather, Ellie, Bruce and Alan to name a few, the hall has been kept very clean and tidy inside and out, and ready for some upcoming autumn and winter events. It is also getting input from some new eager members who are showing great interest in hosting new events soon.

Everyone is invited to our Open House from 1:00 to 4:00 on Sunday 16th September. Members will be on hand to show off the entire property which is of significant historical interest to this community hub. Refreshments will be available.

By Una St.Clair, It was 5 a.m., and we were ready to head out for Seattle as planned, but then the off grid system kicked us back to the start line when the generator wouldn’t run. Who do you call when the batteries are getting dangerously low and nothing is working? Nobody, that’s who!

In frustrated impatience, we spent the next two hours troubleshooting the off grid machinery, then going for the backup plan which involved hauling in a second generator, and “gittin’ ‘er goin’”. Being off grid is really all about taking initiative and fixing your problems.

We arrived in Seattle late, half an hour before our daughter’s show and worried we would not get to the theatre in time. High stress ensued as the GPS refused to hand over a nicely highlighted route to our destination, so we lowered the windows and looked to the locals for help. What a mistake! We felt like we had been transported to an alternative universe inhabited by test dummies. There was no competing with the devices which produced the transfixed mindlessness of automatons instead of real humans. Our mouths hung open at the spectacle of every head bent or joined to a device, so foreign to us from our country living. I mean, when I walk into the barnyard, all eyes follow me like heat seeking missiles! We couldn’t find any unplugged humans to ask directions until we ran across an elderly Canadian couple who were miraculously still able to converse.

The show was great, a stunning performance, and we fell into bed later that night, exhausted but very proud. The next thing we knew, we were under attack! Automatic

machine gun fire was ripping up the street not twenty feet from our beds! Keeping my head low, I crawled over Ernest to look out the window, but he grabbed me as I slid off the bed and pulled me to the floor.

“Don’t be an idiot” he whispered forcefully “This is no time for sightseeing. Stay down!”

The automatic weapon spat bullets all the way down the street, accompanied by the roar of a car engine and screeching tires. It was a shocking and scary experience so far removed from the serenity of our farm. Like being catapulted into something we only hear on the news.

The next morning, we were discussing this alarming experience with our daughter, Eva, when she looked a little sheepish. “Actually, mum, I didn’t want to worry you, but yesterday I was walking along the street with friends and someone up ahead started shooting into the crowd. We all ran, a big group of us racing to get away.”

My eyes bulged out at her as she made her confession. I came to the snap conclusion that something is very wrong with our cities. By the time we left Seattle the next day, we had encountered yet another possible shooter threat, right outside the opera house which brought to three the number of “gun incidents” in as many days. I was certainly happy to leave the city behind, but felt sad and concerned at its downfall. Adding to my uneasiness were the miles of makeshift shelters hobbled together out of cardboard or old tarps, and piles of garbage along the road out of town.

insidious poverty and what could protect communities from these ills. If I start with the basics, farming has taught me that I can’t plant seeds and ignore them. I’ve got to stay personally connected, keeping watch and actively nurturing good growth in all things, maintaining the wellbeing of plants and animals at the forefront of my mind with actions to follow. Pictured in the photo is DAVID LAMEY. Mr. Lamey was the first homesteader in Eagle Bay. He built a log cabin in the 1890s and also was the first postmaster.

David Lamey was a trapper and tried his luck at mining before settling in Eagle Bay. He died in Kamloops on December 18, 1918 at age 53. He is buried in Kamloops cemetery.

We went out in a Zodiac into the Barkley Sound with Pachena Bay Subtidal Adventures and visited some incredible spots. A 300-year-old Eagles’ nest, the size of a small car in an old growth tree that for centuries has acted as a landmark for passing ships. The nest is mentioned in the old journals of Captain Cook, confirming its age. We saw Harbour Seals relax on the rocks of a small island, watched a large group of Sea Ucluelet Harbour

trail only exists because of the sunken ships. The trail was a lifeline for those who made it to shore to seek help.

After a beautiful night in the Huu-ayaht First Nation’s camp we made our way on the 4.5 hr back road drive to Port Renfrew. One of my favourite places. I’ve visited Port Renfrew three times in the last 5 years, two of which were to hike the incredible 47 km Juan De Fuca Trial. We walked down to the dock and spent some time with the fishermen, leaving with a fresh Sockeye Salmon to throw on the grill at camp that night. They explained the individual markings on the silver of the Salmon as I explained the vibrant red they turn once they reach the Shuswap to Spawn in our rivers.

The next few nights were spent in China and French Beach, trekking to light houses and paddling through the kelp beds before sunset. We had had an epic adventure but were ready to make our way home. With a mild delay at the ferry we crossed back to the mainland and battled the long weekend traffic all the way back to the Shuswap. Car after car making its way here to have an adventure of their own.

By Nancy & George Alison Blind Bay Memorial Hall has been the home of the Ta’ Lana Twirlers Square Dance Club for over 30 years and as we begin a new season we welcome new dancers to join us on October 1. The evening will start with a Pot Luck supper and be followed by a fun intro to modern square dancing.

This year we begin the season on a new night – Monday – and with a new lineup of callers and cuers. Supper will be at 5:30 and we ask that you bring your own cutlery, plate and cup as well as

your favourite pot luck dish to share. Coffee and tea will be provided.

The dancing will be at a fun level, just to give you a taste of what square dancing involves and everyone is encouraged to give it a try. Remember, if you can walk, then you can square dance! Dress is casual, but we do ask that you wear soft soled shoes that won’t mark the floor.

This evening is a great opportunity to see what a fun and friendly activity square dancing provides. If enough people are interested, new

dancer lessons will be offered and will run weekly throughout the season (October – April) and will cover all the Basic and Mainstream moves. You will find square dancers to be very welcoming, friendly and encouraging. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to come and experience what square dancing is all about.
