Second Annual Finz Charity Golf Tournament A Complete Success

By Karen Brown The Second Annual FINZ Resort Charity Golf Classic, raised $8,500. for the Chamber and First Responders. It took place at Shuswap Lake Estates Golf Course on Saturday September 17th.

The nine-hole ‘Best Ball’ Tournament followed by a buffet dinner at FINZ Bar & Grill was enjoyed by all. Total proceeds raised through the tournament were

split evenly between the First Responders and the South Shuswap Chamber. FINZ owner Craig Russenholt presented the cheques to the two organizations, who were both very grateful for the monies received and the time and effort put in by FINZ staff in organizing the event and for the many sponsors who supported the tournament.

-Minister Fassbender announced a new $450 million water infrastructure fund in BC with a revised cost-sharing formula of 50% federal, 33% provincial and 17% local government. The reduced allocation for local government (from 33%) means that Area C residents will see lower costs for any new infrastructure programs we initiate after a successful grant application. We hope to be able to move forward with a grant application for the South Shuswap Liquid Waste Management Plan.

-Regulatory changes affecting agritourism were reviewed, and in general, provide a workable path forward for farm weddings, and other events held on local farms.

-Policy implications for short-term vacation rentals were debated in detail as local governments grapple with the regulatory challenges.

-The CSRD obtained a $10,000 grant to assist with implementation of an asset management program.

-BC is facing a significant infrastructure challenge moving forward, which supports the use of asset management strategies.

Sorrento & Area Community Health Centre News

By Marilyn Clark Along with 32 other non-profits, we participated in the Community Engagement Day on Sunday, September 18th, happy to have the opportunity to share what we do at the Sorrento & Area Community Health Centre with the community and to network with other like-minded community members. The event was cosponsored by the South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce and the Sorrento & Area Community Association. The feedback following the event was very positive and without exception, participants felt they would like to see a 2nd annual Engagement Day happen next year. There was information, music, food – what more could one ask – in addition to a ball tournament at the Sorrento-Blind Bay Park.

All women know how important it is to take advantage of screening mammography for breast cancer. We hear stories every day of how a mammogram saved a life because of early detection. The Mobile Screening Mammography Van will park in Sorrento for two days in front of Munro's Sorrento Prescriptions on Monday and Tuesday, October 24 and 25. When last I was in touch, they had appointment times still available on the afternoon of October 25. Call 1-800-663-9203 to make an appointment.

Women from age 40 but not yet 75 can undergo screening every two years. If you have a family history of breast cancer, your physician can recommend annual screening. If the Sorrento stop is fully booked when you call, the Mobile Van will be in Salmon Arm from October 17 to 22 and December 10 to 17 in front of

Shoppers' Drug Mart. While very convenient for most of us, the Mobile Van, it should be noted, is not wheel chair accessible. If you need that type of accessibility, you can make an appointment in Kamloops (250 828-4916), Kelowna (250 861-7560) or Vernon (250 549-5451).

As most of you know, the Sorrento & Area Community Health Centre is operated by a volunteer driven society. The Centre houses an Interior Health employed Nurse Practitioner, Judy Deringer. The operating costs of the Health Centre amount to approximately $50,000 per year much of which is achieved by donations with some assistance from Interior Health. The Society is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, November 19, at Sorrento Memorial Hall: "Name That Tune". With doors opening at 7 pm, DJ Angie Heinz will test your music knowledge from the 50's to now. You can form teams, if you wish, to compete. Ticket sales will include food and a beverage. There will be a cash bar, door prizes, silent auction items and dancing for those who can't sit still. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased from the Health Centre (located above Munro's Sorrento Prescriptions on the TransCanada Highway in Sorrento), from Munro's Sorrento Prescriptions or from That Damm Market located in Sorrento Shoppers Plaza. Storm Hits Eagle Bay on Night of 17th September Submitted by Alan Rendell, Fire Chief Eagle Bay Fire Department I am sure many of you will have read in the local papers about the storm that hit on the night of the 17th September and caused a lot of damage on the north shore particularly in Magna Bay / Anglemont.

Although not quite as severe, the Eagle Bay area was also badly hit.

The Shimmering Waters estate received numerous trees down, many were torn off feet above the ground

and several fell on homes. Fallen trees and BC Hydro lines blocked parts of Eagle Bay road, particularly around the 50006000 blocks, for several hours during the night and into Sunday morning.

Justin, Rea, Amstrong, and Reid roads also all had trees and hydro lines down. The Eagle Bay Fire Department received nine call outs during the night and into Sunday. Unfortunately some properties received damage from falling trees, but very fortunately no one was injured.

The Annual General Meeting Sorrento Drop In Society

It's Hip to be Square Dancing in Blind Bay Submitted by Nancy Alison Square dancing has a long history in Blind Bay beginning in the late 1950's when a Teen club called the Notch Hillbillies was active and danced in the original Blind Bay school. In 1979 the present day Ta' Lana Twirlers club was formed and is still active today. The dance season begins late September and goes until mid April. We usually have 3 squares on the floor (a square is made up of 8 dancers) and in between “tips” of square dancing we also have round dancing, which is ball room dance steps done by couples, to cues; this is very pretty to watch as all the couples are doing exactly the same steps as they go around the floor in a circular

direction. Our club meets on Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 pm at the Blind Bay Community Hall.

New dancers are always welcome and beginning October 13th, lessons for beginners will be offered, with the first two classes at no charge. Our square dance caller, Peter Weel, will be teaching some easy, basic square dance moves to start you off and the experienced dancers will also be there to help you learn the moves; before you know it you'll be dancing! It's good exercise, a great way to make new friends and just a lot of fun. Classes will continue throughout the fall and winter, so by the time the season comes to an end in (Continued on page 7)

Once you become a confident dancer, there are lots of opportunities to travel to other clubs in the area to attend special party nights when guest callers from other areas are brought in to entertain. There are also square dance jamborees in the summer months throughout the province as well as in other provinces and the US, providing even more opportunities to dance year round. It is exciting to travel to other clubs to meet and get to know folks from many different places. Being a square dancer is like being part of a big extended and very welcoming family!

By Jill Goward We are very lucky in this part of the world in that we actually have four seasons. So what, I hear you ask? Well to me that means we know where we will be and more or less what we will be doing at four particular times of the year.

For winter we have no choice but to put outside stuff away, lay out the snow shovels and plug all the draft holes. In spring we clean up the snowflattened yard, dust off the lawn furniture and prepare the garden. Summer sees us anticipating the arrival of visitors (or vacationing ourselves), mowing lawns and relaxing in the sun. Then there’s autumn, probably the busiest time when we have to store it all away again, whether it be our garden harvest or those comfortable deckchairs. This is the Canadian cycle, predictable and grounding.

So here we are in season number three, thinking about the dark months ahead, unless of course a person plans to indulge in winter activities on the slopes and rinks. The rest of us must make the most of this opportunity to be creative – do some art, sewing, photography, writing etc. I think I will tackle that biography at last…….promises, promises!

October, November and December regular member meetings are held at seven o’clock on the first Monday of the month, while Board members meet every third Monday. Coffee House has resumed on the third Saturdays at 7:00 pm with many superbly talented local musicians and singers. Admission is only $3 which includes a snack.

On Sunday 30th October the hall will be hosting a Harvest Pot Luck Supper at 4:00 pm, so come on down with your all-time favourite dish and socialize with Notch Hill and Sorrento families you may not have talked to for a while. This Hall belongs to you. It took uncountable years and hours of volunteering by past and present residents, plus donations, sponsorships and political support. PLEASE, help the Association make it one of the best Community Halls in the district. Can South Shuswap First Responders Find You?

By Anne Long I am very proud to work as a dispatcher with a group of dedicated volunteers who respond to your 911 call in a medical emergency. I came to Sorrento 14 years ago from The Big City. To a City person, our nights seem very dark indeed. And in Fall and Winter months, darkness comes so early in the day.

What amazes me is how quickly South Shuswap First Responders can find you. BC Ambulance radios us your general location, street or road, and the address number. Within a minute of the call out, responders are driving to reach the scene of the emergency as quickly as possible.

Sometimes minutes are vital to save lives.

Unfortunately, responders can be delayed because they can't see your address number from the road or highway. Occasionally there isn't even a road sign. Or, they drive round and round in a housing development looking for unit numbers.

Please help emergency responders find

you in the shortest possible time. Alert the Regional District if your road sign is missing, knocked over, or turned the wrong direction. Ask your housing development to post sequences of unit numbers for each roadway. Most important, make sure your own address number is visible.

Is it away from tree branches or undergrowth? Is it high enough to be seen above a snow bank? Is it located where the driveway enters the road or highway? Is it visible in the dark?

South Shuswap First Responders sell reflective number signs that you can post at the entrance to your driveway. These signs are reflective white numbers on a dark green background. Decide if your sign should be vertical or horizontal, one sided or two sided. These metal signs are approximately 6 by 12 inches and not predrilled. Carlin School News Submitted by Heather O'Brien The enrollment at Carlin as of September 23rd is 278 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Classes are very close to, or at capacity, depending on the grade.

The middle school students completed team-building field trips to Sky Trek adventure Park on September 22nd and 23rd.

The whole school participated in the Terry Fox School Run September 29.

We run many programs at Carlin with help from parents and our community such as: Breakfast Club, Call Home, and One to One Reading. These programs will all be starting in October. We still need volunteers to fill a few spots: Breakfast Club: volunteers come once a week from 8:00-9:00 to make simple breakfast foods (cereal, toast, and oatmeal). Please contact our Vice Principal, Ms. Prince (cprince@sd83.bc.ca) if you would like to help.

Call Home program: volunteers come once a week from 9:00-10:00 to call the homes of students that are absent without an explanation. Please contact the program coordinator, Charity Leach (leachfive@gmail.com) if you can help.

If you are a parent at Carlin, you are expected to contact the school office (250835-4520) if your child is going to be late or absent for any reason.

Both programs would like to have a few parents as spares to fill in for our regulars if you are not able to commit every week.

This year we will be accepting donations for the Breakfast Club. Dry cereals such as Rice Krispies and Honey Nut Cheerios, and flavoured instant oatmeal will be gratefully accepted at the school office.

The Parent Advisory Council held its Annual General Meeting and first regular meeting September 22nd, the next meeting is set for October 27th at 6:30 pm in the staff room. Babysitting and snacks will be provided.

By Rod Dale We have three dogs ... a Weimaraner, a Chocolate Lab and a Shih Tzu. Strictly speaking, the Lab is my grandson’s dog and lives with him and his father in PoCo. She just comes for summer vacation... occasionally. This year it’s an extended stay because her master is in England until November.

The point, you’re asking ... well this animal is the absolute antithesis of ‘dogs legendary loyalty’. She defends our property fiercely and noisily whether from an unrecognised vehicle on the drive or a bear in the apple tree .... seems to me that (in this case at least) loyalty has more to do with who feeds her than who loves her; which I think is really rather sad.

The Eagle Bay Volunteer Fire Department’s 25th anniversary Open House was a great success. More than 200 dropped by to eat hot dogs and ice cream, nearly fifty kids took the course and became honorary junior firefighters.

Judy and Bill have sold their house and are moving to the Island. Judy was a mainstay of The Hamsters as an actor and a director. We, The Hamsters, will really miss her.

Two friends have recently sold houses in Eagle Bay, and at least four new houses are being built on Eagle Bay and Ivy Road; sad for us of course that old friends are leaving, but the community is looking forward to welcoming new young(ish) people.

Lion President Terry Timms Presents Bursary to Anna Janz of Tappen Submitted by Brian Butcher Anna Janz, who recently graduated from Salmon Arm Secondary, was presented with a cheque for $750 from Sorrento Lions to assist her with her studies at College of the Rockies in Cranbrook. Music in the Bay

By Karen Brown, Arts Council Administrator The Music in the Bay waterfront concert series, presented by the Arts Council for the South Shuswap, was a huge success. Concert-goers from tots to seniors enjoyed listening or dancing to the music each week or just basking in the enjoyment of seeing our community come together each week. Aside from the music, those in attendance could take in a badminton game, toss around a frisbee or football, enjoy parachute play with the kids or witness the amazing works of Marc Dansereau, local sandcastle artist.

Planning by Music in the Bay Coordinator and Arts Council Director Shera Niewenhuizen will get underway at the start of the new year to put together another fabulous slate for the summer of

Tech Talk: Home Care for Your PC

By Stefan Schielke, inTechrity You wouldn’t trust your car with just anyone. Why would you with your computer? Your computer holds your most valuable digital documents: pictures, documents, emails, contacts, personal files and music to name a few. Keeping this data protected can be a challenge in today’s world. While we recommend having your PC professionally tuned-up at least once a year, there is some maintenance that you can do at home to help keep your PC at optimal performance.

1. Windows Updates keeps your operating system up-to-date which is a key component to your PC’s safety. Windows makes it easy by doing this for you. If you PC does not prompt you to run updates, you should manually check this once a week.

2. CCleaner is a utility program used to clean potentially unwanted files (including temporary internet files, where malicious programs and code tend to reside) and invalid Windows Registry

entries from a computer.

- We do not recommend allowing any program, including CCleaner, to manipulate your Windows Registry. This is a highly complex part of your computer that has many intertwined components that can render your computer useless if not handled correctly. Windows does this on its own.

- The cleaner portion of CCleaner is very useful and efficient.

We recommend running this at minimum of once a month or weekly for PC’s with high use.

3. Malwarebytes is an application for computers running under the Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X operating system that finds and removes malware.

- We recommend running Malwarebytes after you run CCleaner. A scan can take upwards of an hour.

4. Bitdefender AdWare Removal Tool frees your computer from annoying adware, malicious hijacker programs, unwanted toolbars and other browser add-ons installed with or without your consent.

- Run this tool after Malwarebytes.

5. Antivirus Software - is computer software used to prevent, detect and remove malicious software.

- For regular home use, Windows Defender (built into Windows 8 & 10) or Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows) should keep you covered.

- Bitdefender provides excellent tools without all of the “extras” that come with other Antivirus software. There is a free version that will keep you protected, or a paid option that provides additional coverage.

- We do not recommend Norton, McAfee, AVG, Avast, ESET or Kaspersky. These add extra “junk” that is unnecessarily running at all times slowing down your PC. Once installed they are also difficult to remove completely.

6. Regular backups on an external hard-drive is your safest option for keeping your data safe. Cloud storage services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive are all excellent choices.

- Backing up your files will ensure that your personal documents will be left intact should your PC come under attack or even fail.

Calling All Beachwalkers The purpose of this le er is to see if there are other folks in the Sorrento area who, like me, believe their right to freely walk the public beaches lining our part of the Shuswap Lake is frustrated by a ny minority of waterfront owners who feel en tled by decades of habit to keep various and sundry docks, wharfs, walkways and elevated gangplanks across the beach in such a way as to, in some cases, completely deny public access. I feel it is me to open a conversa on between all interested par es aimed at fostering an environment in which safe and equitable public beach access for walking purposes is encouraged and facilitated.

I'm sure this issue is not restricted to Sorrento, but you know what they say about dying one's own backyard first.

The Real Scoop About Healthy Living Getting back on track after summer tips

By Kaitlin McPherson Summer has come to an end sadly.

Some of you may have stayed on track with proper nutrition and staying active, but some of you enjoyed many beverages, yummy foods and lying around. Either are totally OK! Now it’s time to get back on track; here are some tips!

1. Pause. Remember. Laugh. - Yep. This needs to be the first thing you do after a vacation or long weekend. Before you start stressing out about what you didn’t do (like that morning workout or ordering a salad at dinner), pause and remember all the good things that happened. Remember the funny moments, smile, and laugh. Let that positive attitude gear you up for a great week!

Also, this: Stressing out about what you didn’t do can cause food (specifically sugar) cravings. Please don’t make things harder for yourself by stressing. Instead pause. Remember. Laugh. And then move on. You have the rest of your life ahead of

you!

2. Meal Prep. - Plan your meals out for the week; you will be setting yourself up for success. I like to grocery shop and meal prep Sundays.

3. Drink two extra cups of water for a few days. - There’s a good chance that you indulged in some high sodium foods, which are causing you to be bloated and not feel your best. Or you might be dehydrated from too much sun and a few too many drinks. The solution to both problems is to drink more water! Make it a goal.

4. Add more veggies and fruit to your meals. - Depending on the type of weekend or vacation you enjoyed, your body might be craving veggies and fruit–go with that craving! But even if you’re not, start incorporating more veggies and fruit into your meals. Aim to fill half of your plate with veggies, and you’ll be feeling like a million bucks in no time!

5. Get at least 7-9 hours of sleep. - When you don’t get enough sleep, you can expect to battle stronger cravings, mood swings, lack of motivation, and that annoying feeling of being hungry even when you’ve had plenty to eat. Getting adequate sleep each night is one of the most powerful moves you can make to get back on track!

6. Just DO IT! - You may be feeling tired and sluggish that first morning back when your alarm goes off. Don’t hit snooze get up and get going. I can guarantee you after your workout and for the entire day you will feel much better! “The only bad workout is the one you didn’t do.”

BONUS TIP: Surround yourself with a group of like-minded, supportive individuals. It’s so much easier to get back on track when you’re not doing it alone. Surround yourself with people who will encourage and motivate you to keep going.
