BC 42nd General Election By Jo Anne Malpass The writs have been issued for British Columbia’s 42nd Provincial General Election. Election Day will be Saturday, October 24, 2020 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Elections BC is implementing several measures to help voters cast their ballot safely in person. Pandemic voting protocols have been developed in consultation with the Office of the Provincial Health Officer. Safe voting practices for voting places are available at elections.bc.ca/ safevoting. Elections BC website at Kicker press time did not have any voting places confirmed. We were able to confirm with the CSRD, that the Scotch Creek/Lee Creek Fire Community hall has been rented by Elections BC for October 15 and 16 for advance voting and for election day October 24. North Shuswap Community Hall and Lakeview Centre have also confirmed their halls have been booked for election day. Voting places and hours of operation will be listed on Where to Vote cards sent to every registered voter in the province before the start of the advance voting period. The BC Liberal Party has announced that incumbent Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo will be seeking re-election. He was elected as the MLA for Shuswap in 2013 and reelected in 2017. No other political party had named a candidate for our riding but

The final list of candidates will be posted online at elections.bc.ca as soon as possible after nominations close on October 2. You can also vote at or pick up a vote by mail package at any district electoral office in the province until 4 pm on October 24. Offices will be open from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, and from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturdays. They will be open from 8 am to 8 pm during advance voting October 15 to 21. In the Shuswap riding, the electoral office is at J171 Shuswap St NW, Salmon Arm Voting by mail - To vote by mail, voters need to request a voting package. Voting packages can be requested now on the Elections BC website at elections.bc.ca/ovr or by phone at 1-800 -661-8683. The vote-by-mail package will be mailed to the voter with instructions on how to complete it and return it to Elections BC. Elections BC expects a significant increase in voters voting by mail this election. In past elections, around 1% of votes in a provincial election were cast by mail.
