What makes kids as happy as can be? Their very first day at Kiddie Academy.

It’s a wonderful place where children go To explore and discover and learn and grow.

This is baby Oliver and Sophie, who’s three, On their first day at their local Kiddie Academy.

Sophie was excited and a teeny bit scared. Oliver was watching a bug in the air.

“Hi, Sophie,” the director said, “I’m Miss Claire.

“Here’s your cubby with spaces for your jacket and bear.”

“And here,” she said, “is where Oliver will be, With the other babies at Kiddie Academy.

“They learn with toys like puzzles and blocks, And they wiggle and wriggle and giggle a lot.”

“Sophie, you’re with other kids who are three. Are you ready to go inside and see?”

“Yes!” Sophie said, as she saw the kids And all the special things they did.

They were painting at easels and building with blocks.

One girl was drawing a bright red fox.

Two boys were singing a funny song.

And Sophie knew right away she belonged.

“Sophie,” Dad said, “we chose Kiddie Academy for you. It’s time to join in and see what you can do.”

“Make friends,” Mom said, “and have lots of fun. We’ll be right here when your day is done.”

The teacher, Miss May, said, “Sophie, this is Drew. You can play together. It’s her first day, too.”

Then Miss May asked, “How is everyone today? Are you excited and happy and ready to play?”

“Yes!” said a girl. “I want to dance and sing And draw and paint and make fun things.”

Miss May pointed to a bowl of apples and pears And asked, “Who can tell me what’s in there?”

“Fruit,” said a little girl dressed in green.

“Very good,” Miss May said. “Fruit is our theme.”

“That means we’ll do lots of things with fruit today. We’ll pretend we’re farmers when we play.

“We’ll eat fruit when we have our snack And maybe dream of fruit when we take our nap.”

“Now who can tell me what should be done If you have fruit, but your friend has none?”

“You share!” Sophie said. “And give your friend a piece So you both have yummy fruit to eat.”

“Yes,” Miss May said. “That’s called being kind, And it’s something we always keep in mind.”

“When you’re kind, other people know you care. What are more ways to be kind you can share?”

“Pick flowers for your mom,” a little girl said, “And sing to your baby brother in bed.”

“And,” a boy said, “you can say ‘thank you’ and ‘please’ And cover your face if you’re going to sneeze.”

“Good answers!” Miss May said. “And all day today, Let’s try to be kind in every way.”

Then yay! It was time for outdoor play! Sophie was happy it was a sunny day.

“Look,” Drew said, “there’s a bug on me. It’s red with black spots and teeny-tiny.”

“It’s a ladybug,” Miss May said. “It’s OK. Ladybugs help farmers in a special way.

“They eat bugs that eat veggies and fruit. They help farmers, and that helps you.”

“Wow!” Sophie said. “Bugs can be kind, too, And do nice things to help me and you.”

Back inside Kiddie Academy, the music began. The kids stood together and held up their hands.

They turned around and kicked their feet, And jumped in the air and danced to the beat.

Dancing made a hungry rumble in Sophie’s tummy. She hoped that lunch would be super yummy.

Miss May said, “Here we eat like families do. We pass our plates and say please and thank you.”

Lunch was as good as Sophie hoped it would be, With mashed potatoes and slices of turkey.

And there was warm bread and some green beans, And a cold cup of milk and sliced nectarines.

What a big, big yawn! It was time for a nap. The kids set up their cots in a snap.

Sophie’s blanket from home was so very soft That in just a few minutes, she nodded off.

Sophie dreamed she was invited to tea

They ate tiny cakes with ladybug spots

And waved to a farmer tending his crops.

After the nap, Sophie went back outside. Where was the ladybug? Did she hide?

“There she is,” Drew said, “on that leaf there.”

They watched the ladybug fly in the air.

Back inside, Sophie and Drew sat down And drew ladybugs with red and black crayons.

Sophie drew a ladybug with giant spots. Drew colored tiny bugs that looked like dots.

Uh-oh! Drew’s crayon broke. Sophie said, “Use mine.”

“Good job!” Miss May said. “That was so kind.”

“Hi,” said a voice. Sophie looked up and was glad To see her brother, Oliver, and Mom and Dad.

“Look what I made today,” Sophie replied.

“It’s a drawing of a ladybug I saw outside.

“Did you know ladybugs eat bugs that eat fruit? They’re kind and help farmers, and that helps you.”

“Wow,” Mom said, “you learned a lot today. Did you also have plenty of time to play?”

“Yes,” Sophie said, “we played in the sun And danced and drew pictures and had so much fun.”

“Do I have to leave?” Sophie asked. “I’m not ready to go.”

“Don’t worry,” Mom said. “You’ll be back tomorrow.
