hi!

I

’m fast approaching my second Mother’s Day and I do not know where the time has gone. The other week I was watching as my baby girl took her daddy by the hand and led him down the hallway. How did that tiny baby that I held only moments ago turn into this energetic and bubbly toddler? I’ve said it before and I will say it again, being a mum is hard work. But seeing moments like that, where my daughter not only holds our hands but also our hearts, makes it all worth it. Every smile, every laugh, every little moment together. I’m really excited about our main feature in this issue on celebrating motherhood. I wanted to bring you something to help you celebrate the amazing job you are doing every day as a mum. I hope you enjoy it. I’ve also got some fabulous gift ideas as well as a few styled outfits to have you looking your best. I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day and enjoy every second with your family. Until next issue, you can find us at www. kidmagazine.com.au for more of the things you love.

Celebrating motherhood Photography by Elise Garner, www.lecoco.com.au Words by Sara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor Death to the stock image of the perfect mum. You know the ones I’m talking about. The ones with the mum cooking a gourmet dinner while holding a toddler on her hip and talking on the phone. Or the happy family enjoying a relaxing Sunday sleep in, newborn and all. Or my personal favourite, the child being fed sweet potato on a pristine white couch. These aren’t images of real mums and in my opinion, they aren’t even images of what real mums aspire to. So why do we keep seeing them splashed across advertising or the pages of magazines? I have been guilty of using the “perfect mum” images myself but no more. This Mother’s Day I wanted to do something a bit different to capture the reality of motherhood. I wanted to create a series of images that show mums getting on in their day-to-day lives minus the white couches and perfect dinners. What we all do each and everyday for our families is beautiful and we do it all with the kids at our feet (or in our arms).

kidmagazine.com.au 7

When I approached each of the mums about being involved in this feature and explained what we would be photographing, each of them responded with “oh that’s easy, my kids do that everyday”. And on the day, we didn’t need to give the kids any direction. They all knew exactly what to do. I hope that through these images, captured by the amazing Elise Garner, you take a moment to celebrate what you do everyday for your family because as you can see, it is beautiful. Those perfect little moments you share with your kids while going through the day-to-day motions are what life is about. This month I am running a free challenge to help mums get their mojo back and it is all about the little moments and making a little more time for yourself. The challenge has already started but it isn’t too late to sign up. Visit www.kidmagazine.com.au/the-30-day-mummy-mojochallenge/

“Sometimes my house is going to be messy, sometimes my kids are going to throw colossal tantrums in the grocery store, sometimes the post is going to take aaages and customers are going to be cranky about it, sometimes I’m going to forget dinner is in the oven and burn it to a crisp. I can either get all worked up and upset every time things feel out of balance or chaotic OR I can choose to give myself (and my kids, and my friends, and my customers) grace and get on with life.” Jenna Campbell Owner, Topknot Shop and mum of two www.topknotshop.com

“I balance everything I need to do around my mummy role (rather than balancing motherhood around my life). This way I can ensure all of our basic needs are met before I do anything else which keeps us all happy! “There’s no shame in asking for help. The ONLY way I balance being a mum as well as being everything else I need to be (and running a business) is due to the huge amount of support I get from my husband, my family and my friends....Its taken a while to be OK with that, but I’ve learned, I am not superwoman :)” Kate Meredith Owner, Educate to Communicate Speech Pathology and mum of two www.educatetocommunicate.com.au

“There are times when I have wondered if all the hard work is worth it and if I am doing the right thing for my family. But then I remember that I am being an amazing role model for my daughter. She is the reason I want to succeed. At the end of the day though, success to me is seeing her happy and healthy and enjoying the little moments together. Mums helping mums As we approach Mother’s Day, I wanted to turn my attention to the mums out there who are in need of support and what we can all do to help. Two groups that focus on helping parents are The Nappy Collective and Dandelion Support Network. They each answered a few questions about their organisations and what they do.

Who are the mums behind The Nappy Collective? There are five mums behind The Nappy Collective, as well as scores of volunteers and committee members across Australia. We don’t think of ourselves as ‘mums’ but professional women with kids that share a passion and commitment to supporting struggling families across Australia through collecting leftover nappies. We have varied skills and backgrounds – a financial advisor, logistics and general manager, accountant, lawyer and marketing professional. Did you ever think The Nappy Collective would get this big? Our vision was also to grow and keep expanding, but the level of support and traction we have experienced in so many different areas in Australia – city, country, outback - has been incredibly rewarding. We always believed in the concept and underlying purpose of our organisation, but to see it taken up by over 100 businesses, supporting

kidmagazine.com.au 28

over 60 charities, and have so many people support it has been phenomenal. It’s what keeps us going when we feel like there’s not enough hours in the day! Why do you think mums get so passionate about helping other mums? I think no matter your social, cultural or religious background, being a mum is a great leveller. It also allows you to have empathy for other mums, no matter who they are. No matter what situation you’re in, most mums are trying to do the best they can for their children. Donating nappies is an easy, straightforward and transparent way to help a mum in crisis, and you can’t help but feel good about that. One mum told us she felt like hi-fiving a shop assistant after donating nappies. We also try and highlight the extent and impact of domestic violence on mothers with young children, and I think we’ve been able to build some empathy around that. We talk about stories not statistics – one mum coming to a shelter in her nightgown from hospital with her newborn only days old. These are the stories that touch us, and move us to action. Donating nappies is a simple but effective way to collectively help these families. Do you have a mantra or phrase you live by at The Nappy Collective? Yes we love quotes!! Our three favourites are: We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone (Ronald Reagan). Be the change you want to see. (Ghandi) Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead

www.thenappycollective.com

How many hours would each of the mums on the board work on The Nappy Collective each week? Many! We run our Collectives twice a year, so the weeks leading up to, during and after each Collective are extraordinarily busy. Our team can each put in over 20 hours a week – it can take all our spare moments, and we often say there’s not enough hours in the day! This can involve logistics, liaising with our 200+ drop points, charities, volunteers, committees, trying to get media coverage, managing our social media, accounts, legal requirements! What are your goals for The Nappy Collective this year? We would like to keep expanding and collecting more and more nappies with each Collective, as well as ensure our local teams are well supported. There are never enough nappies to go around, so we are looking at ways to supplement our bi annual Collectives with pop up collectives, as well as plan a social enterprise around The Nappy Collective.

Can you tell me a little bit about Dandelion Support Network? Dandelion Support Network is a volunteer run charity. Dandelion accepts donations of new and used nursery equipment, children’s clothes and toys from the public. These items are rehomed to families in need through support agencies and hospitals. The people we help are in need of assistance for a variety of reasons. This may include victims of domestic violence, those suffering financial hardship, mental health issues, multiple births, parents and children with disabilities, substance abuse issues, homelessness and refugees. Who are the mums behind Dandelion Support Network? Our team is made up of passionate and dedicated volunteers who generously give their time to help families in need. Most of the team are Mothers who live in and around the Sutherland Shire where we are based, however we have volunteers all over Sydney who help out in different ways. And of course, we have volunteers who are Dads, grandparents and some who aren’t parents at all.

kidmagazine.com.au 29

Why do you think mums get so passionate about helping other mums? There are few things more gut-wrenching than hearing about little babies or children who are doing it tough. For most of our team, we put ourselves in the shoes of the families we are helping and feel so humbled about making a difference in their lives. We feel a real connection to the work we do and the impact we are making, it is hard not to be passionate! What are your goals for Dandelion Support Network this year? In the past 12 months, we have helped more than 700 families across greater Sydney with cots, prams, car seats and other essential items and we hope to continue to increase that in the coming year. To do this, we need plenty of volunteers and we are always looking for partners or supporters to help us remain financially sustainable as we receive no government or ongoing funding. As well financial support, we are currently in a rental that is part of a bigger development plan. Securing a more permanent site that suits our limited budget is critical to maintaining our services in the community. For mums who are wanting to give back to other mums, what advice would you give them? Giving back is so rewarding and fulfilling. Many mums are time poor so be kind to yourself. Look into ways that you can give back to the community that suit your lifestyle, your passions or areas of interest and give as little or as much as you want to. Any small contribution will make a real difference for someone else and you won’t regret it. Do you have a story you can share about the impact your service is having on mums in the community? One of our very first recipients was Jen. Jen had left her violent husband with nothing but her ten month old daughter, very few possessions and heavily pregnant. She was scared, with no money, didn’t know where she was going to live or how she was going to cope. Dandelion was able to help with practical items for the children which eased her stress. In her words: “This kind act from strangers gave me faith that I was taking the right steps in leaving such an abusive relationship. The knowledge that strangers were willing to help me in my time of need gave me strength when I felt like giving up.” Three years later she is a fantastic Mum to two beautiful children and is half way through a Uni degree with a distinction average. Inspired by her experience, Jen has also set up a charitable organisation, The Beauty Bank that collects beauty products and toiletries for Mums and Dads to help them feel valued, in their time of need.

How To Organise Art Work and Memorabili a Amanda Lecaude, Organising You It has probably already started and your children are bringing home artwork from school or kindergarten. You might already have a pile of it from recent times or over many years. What do you do with it? Do you have a system for dealing with it or do you just let it pile up? Recently as I was organising and putting away some of my own children’s art work and memorabilia, it occurred to me that many people are not really sure what to do with it all. Many of my clients often struggle with this same issue and I have assisted them by setting up systems for keeping those items that they like the best. I use the term ‘best’ as if you have children like mine you could not possibly keep every drawing, painting and art creation they made – it would take over! Here are 4 tips to organising artwork and memorabilia that usually work for my clients and my own family: Making a decision When it comes to items like school work, reports, certificates and art work the decision making process can be often difficult. In a perfect world you would love to keep it all but storage is an issue for most of us and you would end up with boxes and boxes over the years of a child’s school life! Also be aware that there is a real trend in recent times of children becoming adults and not wanting items or things that parents have held onto for years to give them.

facebook.com/OrganisingYou

You will need to decide what you wish to keep, display or dispose of. Sometimes you will be able to do this by yourself but often children like to be involved during this decision making process. Good luck! Storage and display Ideally you need to have one spot where you store and keep it all together. This could be in a file, box, tub or folio. I often recommend to my clients that they have a large labelled plastic tub for each child that can be stored up in a cupboard, attic or even in a garage space. This tub is then the central place for storing each child’s school life memorabilia along with other memorabilia items from activities including sports. When it comes to artwork you might already have a display wall or shelf where you keep items and rotate them over time. If you don’t you might be able to find a space for this. I usually recommend one place so that it doesn’t end up spreading over the entire house. I also suggest you keep the pieces that you or your child are really proud of and dispose of the rest. If you are uneasy at disposing of any of these you could take photos beforehand to keep so that children can look at them from time to time. I know my son has often asked me to take photos of lego creations and art work he has made at school as he knew he couldn’t keep them forever. Another idea that friends of mine have used is to create a photo book of their child’s artwork over the years. I like this approach and can’t help but think about how little space it takes up too!

twitter.com/organisingyou

www

www.organisingyou.com.au

Now that my children are a bit older they tend to only come home with their artwork in a folio at the end of the year rather than in a regular stream. When we get the folio we usually sit down together and select the items they wish to put up on our art wall, those they want to throw out and others they will keep in their memorabilia boxes. Regularly review If you find your memorabilia tub or place where you store such items fills up very quickly you might need to go through it on occasion and review its contents. Often when you look at something months down the track you think to yourself why would I have kept it and maybe you can dispose of it now. Particularly if at point in time you couldn’t decide between 5 paintings on the same day – this might be a useful practice to adopt. Date items My final suggestion is to ensure you put a date any items that you decide to keep. The piece of artwork or memorabilia will have more meaning when you do look back on it in years to come. I know there were times when my children went through a comparison of whose art work was better and I was able to bring out samples of each to share and show their was little difference in their development at the same age!

kidmagazine.com.au 31

It’s important that you come up with a solution that works for you, your family and the space you have. Do you think you can now go ahead and get this all organised in your home? If not feel free to give me a call! Also if anyone else has any great tips that work for them please feel free to let me know so I too can keep sharing!

It is often difficult for people to understand when a baby dies, no matter how early or late in gestation, that the life of that baby has already been celebrated as a Mother and a Father, and then celebrated with family and friends, imprinted into our hearts and souls. When losing this tiny life there is so much grief and heartache, the same grief and heartache of any parent, of any family when a life is lost. We seek to support families faced with the tragic loss of their baby or child through services delivered with compassion and love.

Handy apps for mums Jessica Bee, Flying Start Kids So we hear about apps for kids fairly regularly, but are there any apps out there that could help us with all our myriad mum duties too? Absolutely and here’s a round up of some of the best! Tiny beans: Baby Journal for Sharing with Family: Free So many of us live far from our kids grandparents. Whilst intentions might be good to keep everyone updated on the lives of your little ones, real life often intervenes and suddenly it’s a month or three since you sent any pictures or updates. With the Australian made Tiny Beans you can create a family journal with photos, videos and notes, which can then be shared within your closed little network of family members, who receive automatic email updates. Grandparents don’t even need a smartphone, just an email address. Can also be used to share pictures of kids artworks and the hilarious things they say! Playground Finder: Free Playground Finder allows you to search for over 3000 playgrounds throughout Australia. Also has a ‘nearby cafes’ feature. Artkive: $6.49 I love all the artworks my kids are making these days. But what to do with all those treasures after they’ve been stuck on the fridge for a few weeks? No

kidmagazine.com.au 36

need to feel guilty about putting them in the recycling if you use this app. Get rid of the clutter and store digital copies of all the artworks. Picture Postie: Free If you take great pictures on your phone but never do anything with them then you will love this app. It enables you to order prints straight from your phone and have them delivered to your door. Select photos from your phone, Instagram, Facebook and Flickr albums and order quality photo books, prints, canvas, photo blocks, calendars, wall decals and more. Great for using with your Artkive pics as ordering prints through U.S. based Artkive is currently expensive. Kids Media by Common Sense Media: Free See in an instant what’s OK for your kids to watch, play, read, do and download. Common Sense Media’s age-based ratings and expert reviews help you find the best entertainment and learning for kids. Use the app to search a database of movies, TV shows, books, music, apps, websites and games. Find out which iPad and iPhone apps are best for learning. Get recommendations from Common Sense Media’s editors and create age-based profiles for your kids to personalize your search for quality media before renting, buying, watching or playing.

Baby Pack & Go Packing List: $1.29 For those of us who always manage to forget something when we leave the house, when going overseas, camping or just for a playdate. Baby Pack & Go is an extensive packing travel checklist and automated tasks reminder system tailored specifically for parents and caregivers. You can start with their ready-made packing lists, or you can customize and personalize your own lists. Helps you manage all your baby and child travel needs.

Jessica Bee is a professional technology educator and yoga teacher, founder of the tech parenting and mindfulness blog Flying Start Kids and mum to two boys age 2 and 5. She reviews the very best apps for growing kids’ creative minds, along with ideas for other non screen related activities. She is especially passionate about assisting parents and carers through the modern day parenting challenges of managing children’s engagement with technology. She lives with her family in Sydney and teaches ‘Bendytots’ yoga for kids at Prana Space in Rose Bay.

END Baby Monitor 3G: $4.99 If you forget your baby monitor but have a couple of iDevices (either an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or a Mac.) it’s worth giving this a go. A video and audio baby monitor on any iOS device or Mac. Hear every noise, see live video, and soothe your child remotely. Works over Wi-Fi and 3G. More sensitive than you think so really works best in quiet locations where the only noise will be your baby if he wakes. A Family Matters: $2.49 If your meals out are less than peaceful this app might be a good one to pop out. Designed to promote fun family communication, it’s full of little play ideas and conversations starters. Actibities and questions are venue related, so geared towards your location such as being in a restaurant, on car journeys, in a waiting room, airports etc. The facts that it’s on the phone will get the kids interested to start with, then rotating turns will keep them keen. I love the thinking behind this one, a wonderful positive tool for families. Not currently available for iPhone with iOS8 but they promise a fix soon, but iPad is fine. Lickety Split - Kids’ Timer: $1.29 Take the pressure off asking them to get ready/dressed, pick up toys for the thousandth time and make it more of a game with this fun timer. Turns daily tasks into a fun, beat-the-clock game. Accelerating classical music encourages dawdling kids to get going, while an animated hourglass counts down. The abstract concept of time becomes tangible for kids. The timer uses encouragement and the power of music to motivate children as they move through daily transitions. So, instead of nagging, grown-ups are free to champion their kids!

Fig, Prosciutto and Goat’s Cheese Salad Great on its own for a quick, light meal or served as a side dish. An absolute winner in our house. I also love to make a finger food version, which is perfect for parties or picnics. See page 213. Prep time 10 minutes Cook time 10 minutes Total time 10 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients 4 handfuls mixed lettuce leaves 4 fresh figs, cut into wedges 8 slices prosciutto, torn 100 g goat’s cheese, crumbled 1 handful pine nuts, toasted (optional) Dressing 2 tablespoons white condiment (white balsamic vinegar) 6 tablespoons olive oil 1–2 tablespoons honey, depending on sweetness of figs 3 handfuls basil leaves Method Arrange lettuce, figs and prosciutto on a large salad platter. Crumble goat’s cheese over the top. To make dressing, blend ingredients in a food processor or with a stick blender until chopped and combined. Just start with 1 tablespoon of honey. Taste and adjust to your liking. Pour dressing over salad and sprinkle with pine nuts.

Parmesan Chicken Schnitzel Schnitzel is an all-time favourite, and you will love this crispy, cheesy chicken schnitzel. Using fresh breadcrumbs and cooking in coconut oil helps to give it a crispy, crunchy coating. For additional flavours, try adding parsley or thyme to the breadcrumb mix before processing. Prep time 10 minutes Cook time 10 minutes Total time 20 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients 400 g chicken breast fillets 6–8 slices spelt or rye bread ½ cup parmesan cheese, finely grated freshly ground pepper ½ cup spelt or plain flour 2 eggs, beaten coconut oil 4 handfuls rocket 250 g cherry tomatoes, halved 1 handful basil leaves, chopped Dressing 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 6 tablespoons olive oil Method Preheat oven to 100°C. Slice the chicken fillets in half horizontally so you have skinny fillets. Lay chicken between two sheets of plastic wrap and, using the flat side of a meat mallet or rolling pin, pound schnitzels to an even thickness (about 1 cm). This makes them quicker to cook, keeping the chicken moist. In a food processor, crumb the bread and parmesan. Make them as fine or as chunky as you like. Add lots of freshly ground pepper. Place the flour on a dinner plate. Whisk the eggs in a wide, shallow bowl, with a tablespoon or two of water (helps to break up egg white and thin mix). Place breadcrumbs on another dinner plate. Coat the chicken pieces in the flour (shake off excess), dip in egg wash and then breadcrumbs. Press down firmly to make sure the crumbs stick. Place on a clean plate and continue with remaining chicken fillets. Place 1–2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook schnitzels (2 at a time) for 2 minutes on each side until the crust is golden and crisp. Place on a lined tray in warm oven and repeat with remaining schnitzels. You may need to add more coconut oil each time. Assemble the schnitzels on individual plates, top with a handful of rocket and a scoop of tomatoes and sprinkle with basil. Shake vinegar and oil in a jar until combined. Taste and adjust to your liking, then pour dressing over top of rocket and tomatoes. kidmagazine.com.au 41

Strawberry Shortcakes Just the mere mention of Strawberry Shortcakes can bring a smile to your face. It is summer on a plate. A light crumbly scone, balanced perfectly with sweet, juicy strawberries, smothered in cream and drizzled with strawberry coulis. Absolutely delicious, and my take on the traditional dish is so easy to prepare. Prep time 10 minutes Cook time 15 minutes Total time 20 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients 200 g spelt flour 2½ teaspoons baking powder 1/3 cup cream 1/3 cup lemonade (room temperature) extra flour milk or lightly beaten egg for glazing Strawberry coulis (optional) 250 g strawberries, chopped 1/4 cup caster sugar Topping 300 ml thickened cream 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence 1 tablespoon caster sugar 250 g strawberries, sliced Method Preheat oven to 210°C. Sift flour and baking powder into a bowl and make a well in the middle. Add cream and lemonade to the flour and gently mix until soft and sticky. Be careful not to over-mix, 3–4 stirs should do it. On a board dusted with flour, turn the dough out and pat into shape (about 3 cm high). Using a round 5–6 cm cookie cutter cut out scones. Do not twist the cutter, just push. Place onto a baking tray (lined with greaseproof paper and dusted with a tablespoon of flour), so the scones are touching each other. Glaze tops with a little milk, and bake in the top rack of the oven for 12–15 minutes. Make strawberry coulis by placing strawberries in a saucepan with caster sugar. Stir over medium heat until a sauce starts to form (5–10 minutes). Put aside to cool. To make topping, whip cream with vanilla essence and caster sugar until peaks form. When scones are cool, split in half. Cover the bottom half of each with a tablespoon of whipped cream and then a layer of sliced strawberries. Replace top of scone and cover with more cream and strawberries. Pour strawberry coulis over the top to serve. *** For a decadent ladies morning tea, try using champagne instead of lemonade.
