EDITOR’S LETTER

hi!

W

here is the year going? This is our second last issue for the year and we are only one month away from our 1st birthday! The highlight of the last month for me was my baby shower, which I can’t wait to share with you next month. Styled by the delightful ladies at Honey Lane, photographed by the wonderful Cara Loren Photography with special craft kits for the littlies by Kiddie Create it was a really fantastic day. As the weather heats up we have some fabulous fashion, beauty tips & products and ideas for activities to keep the kids busy in the great outdoors. Enjoy the gorgeous spring weather! I hope you and your families have been safe these past few weeks, particularly in the extreme heat and bushfires that have struck parts of NSW. As we enter summer it is timely to consider preparing a bushfire survival plan to protect you and your loved ones. The Rural Fire Service has a great resource to help you plan and also educate the kids. It can be found at http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/file_system/attachments/ Attachment_BushFireSurvivalPlan.pdf. My top 5 for November are: 1. The refreshing Festive Fruit Fizz from 4 Ingredients on page 44 – YUM!

Cover image Photographer: Thomas Henning Photo: Noa wears Toshi Sunhat Posie - Lily

2. Lee-Anne Stillitano, owner of HeavenLee Creations, knows a bit about swimwear and spending time at the beach so has shared some fun games for the kids to enjoy by the sea on page 37 3. I have organised many a party and have put my thoughts on planning the perfect party menu on page 52 4. On page 9 we tell you about the Bella Buttercup Baby Bundle. I’ll be reviewing my own Baby Bundle when bub arrives and I can’t wait! 5. If you are planning a kitchen renovation make sure to check out the fabulous tips from Jessica Gabriel of Magno Kitchens on page 58 Until next month, you can find us at www.kidmagazine.com.au for more of the things you love.

Q&A with Amber Scales from Mooky Shoes

For shoes so good you will be wishing you could grab a pair for yourself, you can’t go past Mooky Shoes. Founder, Amber Scales is passionate about what she does and bringing quality kids shoes to the Australian market and so we asked her a few questions to find out more about the product, the new Summer range and what she loves most about running this funky little shoe label

Tell us a little about yourself your career background, your family, your interests etc.

I grew up in Sydney and spent my high school years at boarding school in the country. In the years following school, I worked with my Aunt, a Shoe Designer, on a casual basis and learnt the basics of what I’m doing now with Mooky. Thinking back, it’s interesting how much the internet has transformed business. I travelled a lot when I was younger with my dad living in the U.S (he was in the fashion industry there) and my mum and step father living in Italy and Spain from when I was aged

kidmagazine.com.au 10

around 16 until 28). After going to uni in Sydney, (where I studied all the ‘ologies’ under the sun and vocationally, have not used any of it), I worked as a Film Publicist, and then in TV Publicity.

How did Mooky come about?

My children were aged 2 and 4. I was working in Medical Administration and was feeling creatively starved! I was chatting with a friend one night about the sad state of children’s footwear in Australia, and felt all the stars had aligned. That night I decided I was going to start

kidmagazine.com.au 11

What do you enjoy most about your job? Designing the shoes is of course my favourite part! I really love the creative side of the job - the photography and styling and coming up with different angles to reach the Mooky brand out to people. I also enjoy selling at markets where I meet people and their kids, and exhibiting at trade fairs where you learn all the tricks of the trade, making friends with other likeminded people running similar businesses to me. Tell us about your current collection? What is the inspiration for the collection? Do you have a favourite pair?

designing some children’s shoes and the next day I began researching. My first shipment of shoes arrived 14 months later.

What differentiates Mooky from other kids shoe labels?

All Mooky’s designs are unique in some way. Playful tassels featured at the heel; converse-style boots made out of suede; loafer/moccasin designs - a favourite everyday staple for many women, that you see very rarely in kids shoe ranges; woven ball embellishments (inspired by ‘toggle’ cufflinks that many men wear) which feature on our Spring/Summer ‘13 ballet moccs. We only use genuine leather uppers and inners. This is important when talking shoes! Bags and other accessories, you can have great synthetic substitutes but shoes are to be worn - they need to breathe, and they need to be durable. I don’t believe there are any substitutes that can offer these. I think many kids shoe brands offer very similar variations of each other’s designs. I think if you ask a Mooky fan, they’ll say our designs are quite distinctive.

What role do you play in the business? Do you have a team that you work with?

I do virtually everything! Designing, PR and marketing, ordering, packing, selling at markets and events. I liaise with an IT tech guy who manages mooky.com.au, I use a gorgeous and talented photographer to do Mooky photography and my children and their friends do the modelling. I have a bookkeeper (thank god, this is definitely my weakest point), and that’s about it!

kidmagazine.com.au 12

The great outdoors. There are sandals with butterflies, camo print thongs and moccasins with woven ball embellishments made with natural twisted twine. The Butterfly Sandals are probably my favourite. The silver and metallic pink are pretty and shiny, and the nude will blend seamlessly with any outfit. They feature a leather butterfly on the toe-strap that appears as though it has just landed there! You can find out more about Mooky Shoes and shop the new Summer range at www.mooky.com.au

According to the latest national research, the Special K Confidence Report, more than half of Australian women will put their social life on hold as the warmer weather approaches because of their plummeting levels of self-confidence. It was revealed that winter brings confidence to over two-thirds of Australian women who will enter summer with their lowest levels of self-esteem. Balance is the key with fifty-five percent of women recognising that the best way to build their selfconfidence was to maintain a balanced eating and exercise regime. Special K Summer ‘Confidence’ Tips

Zoë Foster Blake

1. Don’t be sucked in by swimwear trends; choose a style that flatters you

Sure, retro (high-waisted, full-bottomed) swimmers are in this summer, but that doesn’t mean you have to buy them, or that they will flatter you. As pantsuits and crop tops have proven, fashion sometimes plays cruel jokes on us.

2. Do your research before buying new cossies. These days swimwear comes with built-in control panels, optical illusion ruching and push-up boob pads… it seems criminal not to harness this sorcery. Figure out your body shape (pear, apple, athletic…) then jump online and research the colours, styles and patterns that will best suit you.

kidmagazine.com.au 20

3.Three healthy snacks. Snacking is where a lot of us come undone. But don’t be disenchanted by the idea of “healthy snacking” – it’s not all celery and raw nuts. Try apple slices with almond butter, Special K’s new Cracker Crisps or trail mix with a few cacao nibs mixed in, and sub them in instead of your usual cookies or muffins.

4. Sharing is caring (for your health). Giving up ALL our favourite treats is about as enticing as bin sludge. One way to literally have your cake and eat it too is to share. So, have an ice cream, but give your partner half. Get that (small) slice of cake, but share it with your workmate. And order that burger, but share it and order a big side salad.

5. Plan your swimsuit shopping. Give yourself a sporting chance against small change rooms, harsh lighting and nosy saleswomen by waxing and self-tanning the night before, leaving plenty of time, wearing clothes and shoes that are easy to pull on and off, and if possible, taking a close, and (brutal-but-lovingly honest) friend for advice.

6. Choose to show your best self this summer. Summer has a habit of coming every year, which is why we have no excuse to panic when it “pops up” and we don’t feel our best. The only way to sashay in with confidence is to choose your goal now, and STICK TO IT. Enlist a training buddy and implement some positive nutritional changes. Your body deserves to be strong and healthy, and you deserve to feel good on the beach. Make it happen.

7. Move more. You needn’t do Psychotic Steve’s Boot Camp five days a week, but do do a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week. The body needs and wants exercise, and the brain likes it too. Choose something you enjoy – pilates, walking, swimming, gym classes, jogging – and view it as ‘you time’ rather than ‘torture.’

8. Let technology help you. The right technological assistance can make enormous differences to how you challenge yourself with exercise and your eating habits. So, use it! Track how many steps you walk a day. Watch your fitness progress and times get faster with one of the many running apps out there that you can easily download to your phone. Special K also has a great and easy plan you can follow so check out www. myspecialk.com.au

9. Play up your strengths. These days beach cover-ups extend far beyond muumuus and tacky see-through kaftans, there’s something for every taste, body, and need. If you have terrific boobs but would prefer to cover up your stomach and thighs, try a long, flowing beach dress in a soft cotton. Love your legs but your arms need work? Buy a short, long-sleeved

kidmagazine.com.au 21

cotton kaftan. Thrilled with your stomach but not your bum? Flaunt your top half in a bikini top and wrap a printed sarong around your waist. (If you can make it ‘dip low’ in the centre of your stomach rather than go straight across, even better.)

10. Bronze up. The confidence that accompanies a well-applied layer of self-tan is instant. Utilise it. Be sure to exfoliate on dry skin then rinse, apply tanner in light, sweeping (not rubbingin) motions, and apply double the body lotion in the following days. Tip: If you’re having a spray tan, ask them to do some contouring, which gives you instant muscle tone and definition. Really!

11. Shoes: always important. Most of us defer to flats in summer. But for those of us who need a little lift, or who simply also enjoy the psychological edge heels magically present, this isn’t a thrilling proposition. So, don’t do it. Find some great wedges, chic wooden clogs or subtly heeled sandals you can wear with casual outfits, and keep your edge. (And height.)

12. Bigger is better. Buying a few standout accessories at the start of summer will allow you to update and create a myriad of new outfits from your current wardrobe, and serve as terrific cheats when you don’t have time to do your hair and makeup pre-BBQ and post-beach. Enormous, colourful, crystal-look drop earrings look great worn with hair up and bright lips, while a heavy statement necklace will instantly add excitement to even the most boring tops, shirts and dresses.

Pampering whilst pregnant Belinda Jordan, Independent Business Owner with The Body Shop At Home™

Unwanted stress and fatigue can have a negative effect on your baby and your health. Treating yourself with an indulgent pamper will leave you feeling revived and more beautiful, inside and out. 1. Mani- Pedi

Sometimes all you need at the end of the day is some time to yourself and the perfect way to let go of any stresses you may have is an age-old favourite, the mani-pedi. Most women find their nails grow faster during pregnancy and unfortunately nails are often forgotten when it comes to relaxing and pampering. Focus on your feet; soak your feet in a bath of warm water, this will ease some of the tension you’ve been feeling in your legs and feet. Give your toes the attention they deserve with a pampering pedicure; perfect for you to show them off, even if you can’t quite see them. Have a hot shower or wash your face with warm water to open the pores. Use an exfoliating scrub such as one that includes Blue Corn Powder to remove excess dirt and oils from the skin followed by cleaning the skin again with warm water. Apply a moisteriser to your dry skin and whilst doing so give yourself a relaxing temple massage. Making sure you do not press too hard, work your index and middle fingers around in a clockwise motion on your temples; this helps to relieve added tension and stress.

3. Run a hot bath

A steamy bath could be just what you are looking for at the end of a long day standing on your feet. Wash away your pregnancy pains with a relaxing, steamy bath. Soak in a lavender laced bubble bath or choose essential oils such as ylang ylang and sandalwood, which are safe to use during pregnancy, and will help calm stress.

4. Hair treatment

The hormonal imbalance during pregnancy can cause dramas for your hair; excess oils at the roots and dry split follicles at the ends! Pleasure your hair with a treatment, there is no need to go all out and spend big on luxury treatments at salons. You can purchase beautiful hair treatments that you can do in

the comfort of your own home, whilst not breaking too much of a hole in your pocket. Go bold, and give yourself a new colour, it might be just what you need to freshen your look and give yourself a joyous feeling of rejuvenation.

5. Pregnancy Massage

A pregnancy massage will help to ease your pains from your stiff back and aching feet. Sit back, and let someone else do all the work, while you enjoy a relaxing massage to boost your mood and promote enlightenment to your well-being. Depending on how far along you are, your masseuse will help you manoeuvre into different positions, either sitting up, lying on your back or semi reclining. Senses can be heightened during pregnancy, so enjoy the pleasant pressure. Belinda is an Independent Business owner with The Body Shop At Home specialising in offering beautiful pamper treatments for pregnant women. The Body Shop At Home provides tailored indulgent treatments and demonstrations designed to leave your skin rejuvenated and feeling beautiful. Seven sensational ideas for keeping your kids busy this summer Caro Webster, founder Caro & Co

Summer is one of the most rewarding times to be outdoors. The days are long, the weather enticing and the beaches, backyard pools and other swimming spots beckon. In the garden, all the hard work of the preceding months is paying off and it’s time to kick off your shoes, enjoy the grass between your toes and the sun on your back. Although for many of us, summer also means school holidays and approximately 9 weeks of young children begging us to find them something “to do”. Caro Webster, author of Small Fry Outdoors – inspiration for being outdoors with Kids, wonders when and why our children lost the ability to entertain themselves. She believes it’s easy to entice children into wanting to find their own fun outside ~ we just need to fire their beautiful imaginations. Here she shares some ideas on how you and your kids can enjoy outdoors together and also some tips on encouraging kids to find their own fun. She says it’s time to ditch the Nintendo and head outside!

Nurseries don’t just sell plants. There are all manner of useful and interesting things that children can use when playing outdoor games. Bags of pebbles or sand can be transformed into mini adventure courses. Bits of bamboo can be used to construct tepees, turned into wands or used as stakes for the veggie patch. Many larger nurseries also have a coffee shop or café attached, so together you can enjoy a latte and muffin after hunting for the perfect herb.

Bean racing This is fun. Have each child plant a bean seedling or seed (ensure you buy the climbing varieties) in the veggie patch. Insert a stake or small wooden tepee beside the plant and have a competition to see whose bean reaches the top of the stake first. At first, your child might need to encourage the bean to twine around the stake, but once it’s off and running, the plant will do this by itself.

Get rid of the prickles! Bindii weed is the scourge of many an Australian backyard. The seed head of the bindii once set (or dried out) becomes like a tiny set of teeth just waiting to prickle and get stuck in your child’s toe or heel. If bindii becomes rampant, it can really spoil outdoor play in the back garden. However, before the seed has set, the plant is actually quite soft and lush and at its most vulnerable. When they are this stage (spring), head outside armed with nothing more than a couple of forks, a bag and your willing helpers. By wriggling the fork under the bindii and gently lifting, you’ll be rid of them in no time. You may find that your children quickly become expert weed identifiers. They’ll really enjoy tracking down all the culprits in your lawn. When my daughter was two, she adored this activity.

Visit a nursery Nurseries are fascinating places for kids – they’re full of colour, smells, noises and, of course, plants! Kids love looking, touching and smelling all the different plants. Why not let them select a few herbs to sit on a windowsill at home. Find a toy that’s seen better days such as an old Tonka truck, create some drainage holes, fill with quality mix and let your children plant away. Encourage them to tend their plants, taking photos to create a visual record of how things grow.

kidmagazine.com.au 34

The rules are simple. Have fun, give the plants regular love and attention, and if possible, seek no help from Mum or Dad! The children will love the responsibility of this project and will be more likely to start eating food grown at home. Involve really little children, who may not have the patience for this level of gardening, by asking them to be the official ‘picker’ of your patch. You might find that they begin to race out each morning to check whether the tomatoes are red enough or the beans long enough. It’s a lovely sensory activity for them. And remember you don’t need a lot of space to grow veggies and herbs.

Egg carton delights Your child can grow (and eventually eat) some really cute little plants from an old egg carton. We like alfalfa sprouts, mung beans and a selection of cresses, or even some pretty violas, as they only need a tiny container in which to grow. Simply have your child fill each space in the carton with a little sandy potting mix. Sprinkle a few seeds in and cover very slightly with the mix. Remember not to overcrowd the seeds. Place them on a sunny windowsill and keep moist, but not wet (using a water mister is a good option). For a bit of a twist, you might like to keep some empty eggshells and sit them in the carton or an eggcup, filling them with the potting mix instead. Violas look just gorgeous sprouting from an old eggshell.

Make a grass man If you have an old stocking (without a reinforced toe) to hand, your child can make a Mr Grass Man. All they need to do is fill the toe of a stocking with sawdust and grass seed (rye grass is ideal) to form a round ball (put the grass seeds in first and back fill with the sawdust). Snip the stocking and secure with a rubber band and then use a permanent marker to draw a face on the ball. Fill a cup or round container with water and place the stocking ball (grass seed side facing up) on top so it fits snugly. Put in a sunny spot, keep well watered, and within a few weeks the little man will begin to grow hair. Your child will enjoy giving him a variety of different and kooky haircuts.

Know your herbs Did you know that young children can identify up to 200 logos but struggle to name the most common of plants growing in back gardens? To assist your child in learning about plants try this fun activity Visit a nursery and let your child choose some potted herbs. When selecting them, try to group those herbs together that like similar growing conditions. Most herbs like full sun, but some do better in partial or full shade.

Back home, plant the herbs evenly into a large pot or wooden box. Use a premium potting mix and water them well. For fun, blindfold your child and ask them to taste each one. They can then choose a favourite and together you can cook something using that herb. Older children might like being blindfolded, while children under three might prefer to see what they’re touching. Recipe ideas include Basil Pesto, Salsa Verde or Sage Burnt Butter. All delicious! If you are unable to make the herb box, you can still undertake this activity using bunches of herbs that you and your children can find at most supermarkets and greengrocers. Herbs that pack a punch in the flavour department include; sage, chervil, garlic chives, rosemary, Vietnamese mint, tarragon and lemon verbena.

It’s a place to play! By making the back garden fun, we can lead our children to building a life long love of gardening and the outdoors. Encourage them to play! Keep it unstructured. Add soil, sand and water into the mix and they’ll willingly head outside. A couple of feathers stuck in their hair and your child is instantly Geronimo or Pocahontas. Long clusters of berries make beautiful earrings and a cicada skin is the perfect brooch. Nearly every object found outside can become something special and promote imaginative play. Encourage your child to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, the magic in the mundane and enchantment in the everyday.

Five Beach Games for a family day in the sun By Lee-Anne Stillitano, owner HeavenLee Creations

Summer is here and you say to the kids “Put on your bathers, we are going to the beach”. You’ve packed the bags with food, drinks, towels, hats, sunscreen and the trusty bucket and spade. Children love the beach, with its fresh air, cooling ocean and endless supply of sand. However, the trusty bucket and spade may only get you so far when it comes to entertainment. Having some beach activities planned for the kids is an excellent and low-cost way to create a fun and energetic day for the whole family. The beach is a great place for children to explore a little further than they would at home, and with the soft sand and ample space it becomes a big backyard. Planning your day doesn’t have to be hard – keeping a few low cost items in your beach bag can create some simple beach games for the kids and give parents time to relax or join in. Here are some great ways to have fun in the sun. You’ll need: - 1 or 2 packs of tennis balls - 3-5 plastic cups, one for each child - 3-5 plastic or metal spoon, one for each child

Water Relay You have an ocean in front of you, so use it! Relay games will give the kids plenty of exercise and keeping them cool at the same time. How to play: You need two teams. One player sits on the beach with a cup above their head and the others are runners. The runners play tag with another cup while running to the ocean to fill up their cup and pouring the water into the sitter’s cup. The first team to fill the sitter’s cup wins! Tunnel Ball Another game to keep the kids’ energy up before lunch. How to play: Each team stands in a straight line at the top of the beach, facing the water, with their legs standing apart to form a tunnel. The player closest to the water turns to face the tunnel and rolls the ball up through the tunnel to the person at the back. Once the ball has reached the back, that player picks up the ball, runs down the beach to the start of the line and starts to roll the ball through the tunnel of legs again. The game continues until they all end up in the water. Beach Bowling A game that requires a bit of patience and coordination.

How to play: Dig two or three holes in the sand, all different sizes. Have the children line up and take turns to roll some tennis balls towards the holes. Why not involve your cups and stand them upside down behind the holes and see how many can roll the balls past the holes and knock down the cups. Scavenger Hunt Here’s a game that will keep them occupied and quiet for a while. Nothing beats a seashell hunt at the beach, but why not have them thinking a bit more? Collect nature items to make a self portrait on the sand. How to play: Each child plays individually, collecting as many nature items (such as shells, sticks, and seaweed) they need to draw a self portrait on the beach. Shell and Spoon Race A good old fashioned “Egg and Spoon” race with a twist. How to play: Each child has a spoon they need to fill with dry sand – not wet sand as this will make the game too easy – and place a shell on top. Have the children run down to the water and back up to you, while keeping the shell on their spoon. First one back is the winner.

Tips for the day: - Be sure to stop the kids for water and snack breaks. Keeping active is hard work that will build up an appetite. - Apply sunscreen throughout the day and always have a shaded area reserved for some time to sit and regain energy. Keep hats on and slip, slop and slap. - These games are bound to have your children wanting to get outdoors and active again soon. So keep a stash of gaming supplies in your beach bag for the next trip. You could even use them at the park and pack a picnic. - The children are bound to be exhausted after such a fun day, so a nice, cold icy-pole does the trick while walking back to the car.

In these days where kids are rushed through childhood it’s nice to know that there are still companies that want to celebrate the innocence of youth. LeeAnne, the owner of swimsuit label HeavenLee Creations, has a simple motto, “Let kids be kids. “ It’s this desire that underpins her range. Growing up near the beach, and with a love for sewing that was fostered by her mother, Lee-Anne seems destined to have become a swimsuit designer. One of her earliest memories is of sewing her first pair of bathers at age 5 in kindy. So when she retired from being an acrobatic-dance teacher it made perfect sense to start a business that combined her love of sewing and her passion for the beach. HeavenLee’s designs are bright, fun and age appropriate; as well as being made from top quality chlorine - resistant materials. Their easy- fit cut also ensures you get at least two years wear from the one pair! How to plan the perfect party menu By Sara Keli, Editor Kid Magazine

Whether you are hosting a dinner party for a few close friends or a backyard bash for 100, one of the most important elements of any get together is the food. Planning the right menu that everyone will love (and that doesn’t have you slaving away in the kitchen and missing the party) isn’t always easy. After having planned many a party menu I have a few tips and tricks to share to make your next party a breeze. A small get together The last thing you want at a dinner party is to spend most of the night in the kitchen and not enjoying time with your friends. There are a few tricks to use 1. Prepare in advance. The slow cooker or oven is your best friend when it comes to preparing in advance. Get your ingredients ready in the morning, put them on to cook and when your guests arrive the house will smell amazing and dinner will be almost ready. Great options are a pulled pork, hearty soup or delicious casserole. 2. Serve a cold entrée. This saves you having to spend extra time in the kitchen, as all you have to do is plate the entrée when you are ready to serve, or depending on what you are serving you could have it plated and ready to go. Sushi is a great choice that can easily be prepared in advance and looks fantastic when served. 3. Let your guests do the work. Think Mexican Fajitas with all the ingredients laid out on the table for guests to assemble their own. A favourite of mine, which I discovered in Thailand, is Miang Kham. While I don’t make a traditional Miang Kham at home it is still delicious and easy to prepare. Simply lay out lettuce leaves (cos are great), fried shallots, finely diced lime (with skin on), roasted peanuts, fresh school prawns, finely diced chilli, ginger and garlic along with a tamarind sauce. Guests can then assemble their own parcels and all you have had to do is some dicing in advance.

Catering for a crowd 1. Plan, plan, plan. Pulling together the right menu for a large party can take time so make sure to start planning well in advance. A simple google search of ‘finger food’ or ‘canapés’ is a good start combined with a search through your recipe books. Think about recipes you like that could be scaled down to finger food and always check how much time you will need to make the item. Write down each item you are planning to include and next to it write when it will be made and how long it will take. If you look down the list and everything needs to be prepared on the day has a lot of preparation required, it’s time to rethink the menu. 2. Balance the menu. Balance here is in thinking about the time and resources available to you. Make sure that the food you are serving does not all require oven time, as you will never be able to get it out in time. Also think about who will be available to help you in serving the food. If it is just yourself you will want to have easy to serve food that can all be made in advance while if you have others to help you can have a bit more variety. Also balance the food that can be prepared in advance with the food that requires preparation on the day.

3. Theme it. A theme is a great way to build a menu. For o menu I organised it was a sports theme so we had mini h chips served in buckets, meatballs in a tomato sauce serv cups, mini meat pies and other foods you would find at a match. With everyone dressed in their sports gear it adde fun element to the night. For a more sophisticated theme prepare quiches, finger sandwiches, sweet tarts and high fare.

cake

Not everyone is a cake artist so the idea of making a cake can be frightening. If you don’t want to purchase a cake b the budget, there are low cost alternatives that you can lo you aren’t much of a baker but enjoy decorating, conside un-iced slab cake and decorating it yourself. If you would the cake into a particular shape, look for a template onlin and place it on top of the cake to cut around. You can hav batman/dora/favourite character shape ready to ice and d

Another option you can consider is a cake kit from a com like Cake 2 The Rescue. For less than $50 you can purchas design and will receive the baking mixture, icing mixture, decorations, cake plate and baking box. Just add the wet kidmagazine.com.au 54

to the baking mixture, bake in the box and then follow the easy instructions to make a cake that tastes and looks great but is stress free.

Kids Eats Food at a kid’s party is where you can really have some fun and get creative. Think bright colours and fun names for the food. Make sure to get the kids involved in planning the menu, as they know what they like and will love being involved. You can also turn the food at a kid’s party into a party game. Make some icing and buy smarties, freckles, lolly teeth etc. and get the kids to decorate their own biscuits. It will keep the kids entertained and that is one less menu item you need to make. Make sure to have a balance of healthy options at the party and use different ways to serve the food to

encourage the kids to eat it. Finger sandwiches cut into different shapes or fruit with funky toothpicks will be more appealing than sandwich triangles or large pieces of fruit on a plate.

latest trend ideas in kitchen renovations Jessica Gabriel: Member of TradieClassifieds, Jessica Gabriel has more than seven years’ industry experience and a background in design and technology. With her company, Magno Kitchens, Jessica combines the latest in kitchen trends with an eye for detail to create cutting-edge spaces for her clients. Soft closing drawers Although soft close mechanisms have been popular for a while, they aren’t going anywhere! This season, manufacturers have gone one step further and upgraded their features, enabling them to carry up to 40k of weight- perfect for those that need to store heavy kitchen equipment and utensils.

Customised glass This season, we will see an influx of kitchen colour with customised glass drawer inserts - giving extra space to stack kitchen items, store spice racks and hold plate racks. The beauty of these inserts is that they now come in a range of colours and patterns – giving customers the ability to create their own colourful masterpiece!

Seamless finishes

Wood grain laminate

No handle drawer options are another big trend in kitchen design. Having push-to-open technology gives the space a minimalistic, modern and seamless look. This look is perfect for those with a smaller kitchen because when you minimise accessories, like door handles and external joinery, you create the illusion of a larger, more open space.

The ultimate solution to the budget-conscious renovator, wood grain laminate adds texture and depth to the kitchen without the expensive price tag. This season, we’ll be seeing the timber look teamed with whites and creams to create a fresh, light and sophisticated look.

Shadow-lining This trend makes the island bench appear as though it is floating above the cabinets, giving a contemporary finish.

Waterfall Ends This has been growing in popularity, as it is both an aesthetically pleasing and practical finish to a stone bench top. Waterfall ends extend over the top of the underneath cupboard and down the sides, to the floor. The space underneath the waterfall top, can be used as storage bar stools, or turned into extra drawer space.

Integration Kitchens are all about integration this season, with spaces and doors to hide away both small and large appliances – including the fridge and dishwasher. This again creates the illusion of space and gives a clean finish to the room.

Under mount Sinks These sinks are an ideal way to complement a new stone bench top, as they allow for more bench space while being easier to maintain than your traditional drop in sink.

Q&A with Kristy Withers from incy interiors

Lovers of quality, stylish children’s furniture and décor will be familiar with incy interiors, launched by mum Kristy Withers

Tell us a bit about yourself - what is your professional background? Family?

interior designers dream. Featuring bright

I have spent the majority of my career working for big companies doing marketing spending the last 5 years of my pre-Incy career at eBay. I am lucky enough to have two gorgeous children Oscar 5 and Polly 2 and be married to my lovely husband Simon.

incy interiors is the first stop on any nursery

What led to you starting incy interiors?

in 2011. From cots to change tables, dressers, chairs, linen and toys, incy interiors is a mini pops of colour paired with simple neutrals, or kids bedroom makeover. To get to know

Kristy and the incy interiors brand a bit better we asked her a few questions about life and work and running such a young and fun business.

kidmagazine.com.au 60

After a long and exhaustive search for my son Oscar’s first ‘big boy bed’. My search took me to not only local high street stores but also international stores, both online and offline, without any success. It was after this huge search and lots of complaining and moaning to anyone who would listen that my husband eventually said stop talking about it and do something about it!

What are your top tips for choosing stylish kids furniture? I always look for something that is stylish, good quality but also affordable. I struggled to find this in Australia and this is why I created Incy in the first place.

For mums planning a nursery or kids bedroom, what advice do you have for planning/organisation? Have fun! A children’s nursery or bedroom is the one room in the house where you can really let your creativity flow, so go for it. In terms of planning, think about how you will use the room. How much storage do you need? What items are essential? The layout of the room, etc.

What role should kids play in designing their own rooms?

Do you have a favourite product in the current range?

I have a bit of a soft spot for the rose gold bed; I wanted one for myself which is how they came about!

You are based out of Bathurst - what do you love most about working away from the city? After living in the city for almost 13 years a move back to the country has been very refreshing. I live in a small country town of only 800 people called Millthorpe and I love it, it has a really community feel about but what I love most of all is being back near my family.

What has been your incy interiors highlight to date? There have been so many it is hard to pick just one opening our Bathurst store was very exciting, as was winning Best Children’s & Nursery furniture brand in Australia & New Zealand this year in the Kids Fashion Review awards.

What are the current trends in kids furniture, both styles and colours, that our readers should be looking out for?

Colour is still a huge trend in not only children’s rooms but also adults and it doesn¹t seem to be going anywhere. In terms of nurseries, the trend of yellow and grey is huge. This is another trend we have been seeing for over 12 months now but it just seems to continue to gain momentum.
 kidmagazine.com.au 62

Children should be very involved in the design of their own room. Thankfully these days there are so many amazing products available that both excite children and also not frighten parents!

What is next for incy interiors?

We have a lot going on right now. We have just set up our own warehouse in Sydney with two full time staff members, which will allow for local Sydney deliveries and installations. We also have 2 new product lines launching early next year, which we are very excited about. You can view the incy interiors range at www.incyinteriors.com.au
