hi!
I
don’t know where the time has gone but all of a sudden I have a six-month-old baby! She is eating solids, rolling over, nearly sitting up and making me smile everyday. Being woken at 4:30 to the sounds of a groaning baby isn’t so bad when I walk into her room to see her smiling and reaching out for me. She is my constant companion and soon enough I’ll have her working away at Kid Magazine for sure. I’ve been blogging a bit more over at www.kidmagazine.com.au so if it’s been awhile since you checked in, there are some great reviews and personal blog posts I think you will enjoy. I’m now gearing up for Olivia’s christening in a couple of weeks so you might see some pictures at our Instagram account of my preparations. I throw a mean party and go all out with decorations so you will be seeing the event in the pages of Kid Magazine very soon. Enjoy this issue full of fab finds, advice and fun for you and the kids. Until next issue, you can find us at www.kidmagazine.com.au for more of the things you love.

How to manage your post-pregnancy wardrobe crisis From the moment you need to start wearing maternity clothes, you dream of the day you will be able to fit back into your old wardrobe. No more elasticised pants, stretchy tops or flat shoes. You get home from the hospital, ready to squeeze back into at least some of your clothes. Sure your belly still hasn’t shrunk back to its pre-pregnancy size but surely some clothes will fit right? Then you try on a top. You pick one that is loose fitting around the belly. The only problem is that your boobs have taken on a postcode of their own and you can’t get the top over them. So you try some pants but it isn’t just your tummy that expanded while you were pregnant. So too did your hips, thighs and butt.. So you decide to try some shoes. You guessed it, pregnancy hormones have increased the size of your feet and you find that even wearing low heels aren’t as comfortable as they were before. But it isn’t all bad and the good news is that it doesn’t last forever. We asked Sharon from Queen Bee Maternity some questions to help you transition from your maternity wardrobe back to your normal clothes after having baby.
2. What are your tips for mums to rediscover their style with post baby body changes? Just dress in clothing that you can feel relaxed and comfortable in as you will have a lot on your mind with the new baby as it is. A colorful top paired with black pants or jeans will help you lift your mood from the first months of unbroken sleep, or simply add a stylish scarf for a walk in the park. Treat yourself to a nice new set of breastfeeding pj’s with a matching robe in case visitors drop by unexpectedly - they will also be great for the few nights spent in hospital. 3. Can breastfeeding friendly clothes be fashionable? Yes definitely, the Floressa and Dote range are our best sellers. The Floressa range is relaxed and comfortable in beautiful soft fabrics with discreet nursing openings that make breastfeeding in public a breeze. The Dote collection is very on-trend and fashionable with pieces

Some comfortable yoga pants are a great transition piece and these can be worn over the tummy or folded over to wear on the hips. The straight leg cut makes them a versatile option to wear with a tee or sweater. The mesop range is great post pregnancy as the dresses and tunics are loose, but flattering without being tight in soft stretchy fabrics with beautiful detailing. Our bestselling Trimester nursing tanks are also a fabulous buy. They are available in 3 basic colours and the soft ribbed cotton fabric is flattering on post pregnancy figures. Plus the nursing access is super easy to nurse your little one.
that are suitable for special events when you need to nurse. 4. How can mums-to-be build their maternity wardrobe to help with the transition back to their regular wardrobe after bub is born?
Mesop Angel Falls, www.queenbee.com.au
An investment in a great pair of maternity jeans such as Mavi or Esprit can be worn well after pregnancy and the elastic panels help your figure transition back in the first few months after the baby is born. Some maternity tops and dresses have discreet nursing openings which make them a versatile option to wear post pregnancy too. A nursing scarf is a great option as it can be worn as a fashion piece but also be used as a nursing cover when you’re out with baby.

Transforming your makeup from day to evening Laura Zammit, Independent Business Owner with The Body Shop At Home™
Life is busier than ever and the last thing any of us need is a high maintenance, time-consuming beauty routine. We go from work straight to dinner, a lunch event straight to an evening one, all with little time in between. More often than not, we need our make-up to last all day or to simply carry through from day to night with little or no touchups. In truth, your night-time make-up should be an ampedup version of your daytime look. The trick to doing it perfectly is to add more without looking overdone. With the correct beauty products and a little know-how, you can take your daytime look straight into the evening, with minimal time and even less effort. Clean canvas: The key to long lasting make-up, that will take you from work to dinner, is ensuring you start the day with a clean canvas. It’s crucial to wash your face each morning before applying make-up to remove excess oil and to create afresh base for your foundation. It’s a good idea to keep blotting tissues on hand, so that you can pat away any build up or moisture from the day. The Body Shop’s Mineral Powder Blotting Tissues $9.95 are perfect for a flawless finish. The eyes: When transitioning your look from day to night, adjusting your eye make-up can make a real difference. Try wearing a light smokey eye to work and then deepening this colour later with a darker, even smokier effect. Transition your light gray colour to evening with an
additional application and why not add a subtle shimmer to the finished look? Eyeliner helps frame and highlight your eyes and is an important part of your make-up look for work and play. During the day, a thin line on your top lids will provide a nice lift, making your lashes look fuller. Keep your eyeliner in your purse and add a thicker line when it comes to evening – you can even add a cat eye with a swift flick to create an even more dramatic look. A dash under your lower lashes will also make for that perfect pop. Avoid adding mascara when touching up your make-up in the evening as it typically just results in clumps. The cheeks: When touching up your cheeks, don’t add much more than you did that morning, as you’ll probably find yourself a little flushed already from the day. For an evening look, everyone loves a bit of sparkle so use a blush or bronzer with added shimmer to accentuate your cheekbones. The lips: For the daytime, a tinted lip-gloss is usually all you need. It’s adds a little shine, with a touch of colour to brighten your overall look. When it comes to the evening, this is the time to go for a more dramatic lip colour such as a matte red lipstick or a bright fuchsia -if you dare. Ski Safety
Mary Dawes, Director of First Aid For You
kidmagazine.com.au 20
• Before you head off for the day on the snow, put the phone number of the local ski patrol in your mobile. If you think you are lost – STOP and THINK. Identify your last confirmed position and estimate your present location. Decide if you will proceed or if you will stop and wait for assistance. If you do stop and you have mobile signal – call for help, either the local ski patrol or 000 /112, select a site out of the wind and use trees, logs or rocks as wind breaks and use skis or branches to mark your location someplace where it may be visible.
For many, the colder weather means a trip to the snow with friends and family is on the cards. Mary Dawes, Director of First Aid For You, is encouraging ski-goers to be “Ski-Smart” by following a few simple steps. Many emergencies in the snow are often the result of people being over confident in conditions where they are unfamiliar with the terrain and environment. My advice for ski safety is: • Dress appropriately – Alpine weather can change rapidly, a sunny morning can quickly turn grey, cold and wet. Wear insulating layers and wherever possible stay dry – waterproof clothing is a MUST. • Anyone with Asthma should have a written asthma management plan for while they’re on holidays. Make sure you have enough of your prescription medication; don’t rely on local chemists having stock of what you may require. In freezing conditions, pressurised inhalers may not work properly; warming the device in your hands may help. • For those people with Diabetes, discuss with your doctor the proposed activities and work together to develop a new dose schedule for your medication. If you do feel yourself becoming hypoglycaemic while out in the snow, have some simple carbohydrates immediately – DO NOT WAIT.
kidmagazine.com.au 21
• For those with children skiing for the first time, call up the ski field where you’ll be spending the majority of your time, ask about ski lessons and content, enquire about what safety equipment they use, how many restbreaks your child will have through the course (if food will be provided – it’s a good idea at this time to notify them of any allergies your child may have) and if there are any prerequisites for your child to attend the lesson. • Your child may, understandably be a bit nervous prior to the first lesson. Emphasise to them that this will be fun, there’ll be other children with them and that the ski instructors are there to make sure you’re safe and have a great time. • If there is an accident, help is only at the bottom of your feet… That’s right – snow! For bumps and bruises, a cold compress can be made with a plastic bag and snow on the affected area to relieve pain. \Wear wrist guards, remembering goggles or sunglasses to protect eyes – young and old – from harmful UV rays. Most importantly, enjoy your time on the snowfields with friends and family and to act sensibly. Follow First Aid For You on Facebook: www.facebook. com/firstaidforyou or visit their website; www. firstaidforyou.com.au About Mary Dawes & First Aid For You: Mary Dawes, Director of First Aid For You has a family history of ambulance service workers, First Aid For You was officially launched at the 2012 Baby and Toddler Expo in Sydney, with resounding success and to date has seen over 3,000 parents complete the First Aid for Families course. First Aid For You brings first aid training to your home or office at a time and location that suits you!
18 ways to fit more exercise into your day Feel quilty that you just aren’t doing enough exercise? Between the kids, work, pets, friends and family there isn’t much time left. Here are 18 ways to fit some more exercise into your day. 1 Do squats in the shower but be careful to keep your balance so as not to slip. 2 Add in some lunges while cleaning your teeth morning and night. You could even do a wall sit to mix things up. 3 Get those triceps working with some tricep dips on the couch while you are watching TV. 4 Walk the kids to school if you live close enough and you think the kids can make it. 5 If you catch public transport to work, get off a few stops early and walk the rest of the way. Remember your sneakers! 6 Have a skipping competition with the kids. Skipping is great cardio and a skipping rope is an inexpensive exercise tool. 7 Have 10 minutes and need inspiration? Bookmark a few short workout videos on YouTube and when you have a spare gap in your day press play. 8 If you have a baby, get on the floor with them and do push ups during tummy time. 9 Going mad at home with baby? Get our of the house and take baby for a walk in the pram. The fresh air will do you both good and with any luck they may fall asleep. 10 Invest in a good carrier and wear your baby while you go for a walk. Even better, look into Kangatraining classes near you. A workout with no crèche required.
kidmagazine.com.au 22
11 If you take the kids to a plethora or extracurricular activities, don’t sit in the car while you are waiting. Run around the block while you are waiting. 12 Refereeing gives you a great workout as you need to keep up with the game. If you kids are playing a sport and you know the rules, offer to referee to get a good run. 13 On the weekend, take the kids to a trampoline park, ten pin bowling or ice skating and join in with them. You’ll have loads of fun and fit in some exercise to boot. 14 Stand up while on the phone. When it rings answer it and get up if you are sitting down. You could even walk around the house. Less sitting is a good thing for your health. 15 How many times a day do you check facebook? How many times a day do you do your pelvic floor exercises? Every time you check social media do your pelvic floor exercises and you will be on your way to a strong pelvic floor. 16 Imagine you have a clean kitchen and while you wait for the kettle to boil you have nothing to do. Do bicep curls while you wait for the kettle using tins of vegetables. 17 In the TV ad breaks lie down on the floor and do some crunches or leg lifts. Abs in the ads! 18 If you spend Saturday morning cleaning, pop on some upbeat music and dance while you clean. It might make the job that much more bearable.

GUIDE TO BEATING THE BE Treasure Vellis, Protect-A-Bed Nurse
year olds wet the bed which translates to 1 in 3 children for that age group. The percentage decreases as children get older with 15% of 5 year olds (1 in 6 children), 10% of 6 year olds (1 in 10children) and 5% of 10 year olds (1 in 20 children) wetting the bed.
What can you do to help your child? The key to helping children with bedwetting is a lot of patience, encouragement and reassurance. Your child might already feel embarrassed about wetting the bed, especially if they are of school age. It is important that they know that they are not the only one and that there is likely to be many children at school that still wet the bed too (and they’re just keeping mum about it too)!
Bedwetting at night is a common problem faced by many families with young children. It is the involuntary release of urine from the bladder. A child that wets the bed sleeps when the bladder muscles relax, rather than wakes with the urge to urinate. There are a few different reasons why a child may experience bedwetting or take a little longer to grow out of it: - They may not wake when their bladders are full. - Their little bladders may have difficulty holding the amount of urine that is being produced overnight. - Bedwetting is often genetic, so if you or your partner wet the bed as a child, there is a good chance your child has inherited this trait. - It may also occur if your child is constipated and there is extra pressure applied to bladder from the bowel. A child needs to understand and master the connection between the physical urge to urinate and the ability to urinate on demand, in order to not wet the bed. Children will accomplish these milestones in their own time. In the meantime, having the tools, like Protect-A-Bed Protectors and strategies recommended by Protect-ABed’s Registered Nurse can help best manage the phase and make the transition easier. Bedwetting is very common in young children. 30% of 4

Times have changed in the way that tackling bedwetting is approached. Fortunately, gone are the days where children were punished for wetting the bed and medication was prescribed. Hard to believe but in the 1970’s Alzheimer’s medication was given to ‘problem’ bedwetter’s to endeavor to ‘cure’ them. These methods can hinder a child’s confidence, as child bed wetter Jen tells. “As a child, to constantly be reenforced that there was something bad, wrong, terrible and ugly about me from the age of five was horrific on my own confidence and love of myself.” Jen suffered from bedwetting until her mid-teens and still feels the effects of the ongoing issue today. “Actions that I took from a very young age was that I stopped drinking water. It was bad as it caused me to be wet. As an adult, I’m lucky if I drink 3 glasses a day -the conditioning has been so strong. I also didn’t make deep close friends because if they knew my deep secret of bedwetting, they wouldn’t be my friend. As an adult I have moved past this however, as a child it impacted my social connection.” There are many ways to help your child overcome their wet stages through healthy and functional methods. It is important to remember that your child is not wetting the bed deliberately. As mentioned, a child will usually stop wetting the bed in their own time.
EDWETTING STAGE Try a Wet Night/Dry Night chart
Night Alarm
Your child is given a reward sticker for each dry night while reducing liquids several hours prior to bedtime and ensuring urination prior to bed. It is important to wait until a child is mature enough to tackle the task as too many unsuccessful wet nights could work to discourage your child from keeping dry.
This works by placing a special pad on the bed or in the child’s underwear, which is attached to an alarm. When the pad gets wet, an alarm sounds to alert the child they should get up and go to the toilet. This can help some children, but most just grow out of wetting the bed.
Waterproof, absorbent bedding protectors Protect·A·Bed® has a range of absorbent, waterproof Linen/Sheet Protectors, Mattress Protectors and Quilt Protectors that assist with keeping children dry and minimize change-over times should an accident occur. Protect-A-Bed Mattress Protectors offer the ultimate protection, keeping the mattress dry at all times. The range is also approved by National Asthma Council, Sids&Kids and Eczema Association of Australia.
It’s always important to remember preparation is key: • If you have a Protect·A·Bed® Linen Protector you should only need to worry about changing the linen protector and changing pyjamas. Make sure a spare Linen Protector is available as well as pyjamas. The mattress will have ideally remained completely dry especially if a waterproof mattress protector protects it. • Protect-A-Bed Mattress Protectors will help your child’s mattress remain dry and stain-free throughout the process of eliminating bedwetting from their nights. • Having soft lighting so no one else is awoken • Reassure your child • Remove any dirty linen and pyjamas Stay positive and supportive. Reassure your child, and return to bed. We understand that reducing your ‘awake’ hours overnight is important for both you and your child’s wellbeing. There is nothing like a good night’s sleep! DIY Painted Glass Vases If you are looking for a cute way to add some colour to your next dinner party or want a small vase to fill a space on a bookshelf then try this inexpensive craft idea.
You will need
Glass vase, old jam jar or mason jar Glass paint (Martha Stewart or Jo Sonja’s are good options) Paintbrush
Instructions
Ensure the glass is clean (particularly if it was previously used for food) and dry. Follow the instructions on the bottle of paint you have chosen. You may need a few coats to achieve a smooth finish. You can paint on the inside or the outside of the jar. The jars we have made up are painted on the inside. This gives a nicer finish. If you are after a more rustic look, paint on the outside and lightly rub sandpaper over the surface. Once dry you can use the jars as vases. Be careful with water as most of the glass paints will withstand water but are usually for decoration only so wash gently only. You can use regular acrylic paint for the jars but the paint will wash off with water so don’t use acrylic if you will be putting water in the vase. Fill with flowers and enjoy your creation!

PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR FAMILY Ben Halcomb, Nikon expert
Taking great photos of your family can seem a little daunting, particularly if you aren’t familiar with the settings or are just used to using your smartphone camera. Here are a few tips so you can take photos of your kids that will give you great results and capture moments to treasure.
Capturing the moment Try using a “standard” lens like the Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8G lens. It’s perfect for blurring your background while keeping your subject sharp in front. This lens also allows for great shots inside with no flash, so you can catch the kids when they are just being themselves. Just put your camera into Portrait mode which will automatically select the ideal settings for the shot you want.
Let’s talk lighting Soft light is best! Consider the lighting available around you. Your best position is with the light behind you to avoid looking into it otherwise your photos will be overexposed. If you’re outdoors, try shooting your subject in the shade with the light falling onto them. For shooting indoors, a nice big window with natural light coming through works wonders with the same principles. Direct sun in both of these examples is classified as a harsh light. In situations where there is limited light available, try the compact and lightweight COOLPIX P340, designed with a super-fast fixed lens, and ideal in low light situations. Or if you have an existing DSLR, try a fast prime lens like the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G.
Which camera is best? Finding your way around the functions of a DSLR can sometimes be a bit daunting, so try using the Nikon D3300 in Guide Mode. The Guide Mode function is
kidmagazine.com.au 32
designed to help you develop your photography skills. With demonstrations on-screen, Guide Mode will change your camera settings for you to help you select the right settings for any photographic style. Whether you are taking photos of your child’s birthday, soccer games or a beautiful beach sunset Guide Mode helps you learn as you go. Or for something a little more compact and lightweight, try the COOLPIX S9700 with automatic scene selection that intuitively selects the style of shot you’re trying to take so that you get the best results every time.
Edit like a pro Editing your photos is easy with the Nikon D3300 and D5300 DSLRs. You can achieve great results every time with in-camera Quick Effects and Special Effects, allowing you to edit your images in-camera, before and after taking the shot, without downloading them onto your computer. Create stunning photos with Selective Colour, apply Miniature effect to your subject for a new perspective or try using the Silhouette effect for striking silhouette images. Once you’ve applied your desired effects, you can share your photos instantly with your family and friends using the ‘Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility’ app via your compatible smart device. (Search ‘Nikon Wireless’ to download the Wireless Mobile Utility App for free from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store).
Location, location Selecting the right location for the photo you want to take is the first step. Before bringing your subject into the photograph, consider the type of image you want to take, choose
Nikon Coolpix S6800
your location and make sure that you have your camera ready with your chosen settings before introducing your subject into the scene. Remember to look around and consider what will end up in the background of your shot. You can even try shooting from a new angle for a different perspective. “The best camera you’ll ever have is the one you’ve got with you!” It sounds simple, but if you don’t have your camera, you won’t get the shot.
Nikon Coolpix S9700
Keep a compact and lightweight camera like the COOLPIX S6800 in the car or your purse for those spontaneous life moments that you find yourself wishing had a camera.
Focusing Accurately Your camera has a 2 stage shutter release to ensure your photos are always in focus. By half pressing and holding the shutter button, the camera will focus on your desired subject and will beep once the focus has locked. Then to capture the shot, press the shutter button the rest of the way down for a photo that is in perfect focus.
Nikon D5300 (18-140mm)
Looking after your pictures This is a very important tip! Try not to leave it too long between downloading the images from your memory card. To avoid losing your photos, regularly download all of your pictures onto a computer or external hard drive, this will ensure you always have a copy of your photos.
Nikon D330 (18-55)
Once you have saved all of your pictures, use the format function on your camera to erase the images on your memory card so you have a clear memory card to start capturing life’s precious moments again.

The new mothers g Sara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor
Leanne Sexton, Co-founder of Mothers Groupie, s
Mothers have been gathering to help each other through parenting for centuries. In more recent times these groups have been formalised to what we now know as mothers groups. But as technology has advanced, so too again has the humble mothers group. Search Facebook these days and you will find any number of mothers groups you can join. Whether it be mums living in your local area, mums who follow a particular parenting style, mums of twins, stay at home mums or working mums. Groups can number members in the thousands and are growing bigger everyday. Think back to 1999. The internet was still a relatively new concept. There was no such thing as Facebook or YouTube; phones were not smart and it is likely any home internet connection was dial up. But it was in that year at the advice of a friend that Ali Green from Melbourne joined an international mothers group of mums due in the same month as her. The group is still in regular contact today. “In the early days we really only communicated about the kids – their milestones, illnesses, updates, photos etc. Over the course of a couple of years we got to know each other – families, interests, secrets…. and pretty soon the mothers group became more about the mothers than the kids!” For Green, the benefit of an online mothers group is the 24/7 nature of it. Mum Kate Carlson from Brisbane is a member of a number of mothers groups on facebook and agrees. “At 2am I can ask a question whilst feeding or vent about a crying baby. When you ask a question, you get real time responses immediately from anyone who has something to contribute.” Jo Hutchinson, admin of the Raising Mum Network, knows the 24/7 nature of the groups all too well and admits it can be a struggle to balance checking the page regularly to ensure it is running smoothly along with family and life. “Mums are online and reaching out at all hours, at any time a post can go off the rails, at any time another mum may need a kind word, at anytime a mum may need urgent information.” Unlike a traditional mothers group where you are thrown together with a group of 10-15 women who had a baby around the same time as you in your local area, an online mothers group brings diversity and strength in numbers! “Having a real time group of women, who are all going through the same experience, many of whom have had more than one child and from many different life circumstances, provides a unique opportunity to ask questions and get a huge variety of

While traditional mothers groups are vital at connecting mothers locally, they don’t always work for everyone. In my case, m daughter was born in early December just before the local mothers group closed down for the school holidays. I was able to attend for three weeks when school started back but know of other mothers who missed out altogether. Mothers Groupie co-founder Leanne Sexton “Mothers Groupie provides a platform where mums will always be able to locate fellow likeminded mothers regardless of whether they have just moved to town or didn’t connect with their group.” Leanne Sexton moved from the eastern suburbs of Sydney or Lennox Head near Byron Bay last year while pregnant with her first child. “I thought a mothers group would be the perfect way to meet other like-minded pregnant women in the area. I soon discovered that I would need to wait until I was assigned a mothers group after the baby was born. Even then I wasn’t too sure whether I would have anything in common with them. This planted a seed – there must be a huge number of mothers at various stages of motherhood who want to connect with other likeminded mothers in their area! From this need, the Mothers Groupie social support network was born.” Mothers Groupie has now launched an iTunes and Android app so mums can connect with one hand while tending to baby. With the prevalence of mothers groups and the information shared amongst groups, it is no wonder that real-life friendships

are forming as a result. Green, Carlson and Hutchinson have all met women from their online mothers groups in person. “What I didn’t expect was to form friendships with people I may never meet and gained unbelievable support through some challenging times.”, said Carlson who meets 20 or so other Brisbane based mothers from her group meet monthly. Green’s group spans the globe and while they haven’t all met in person, the friendships remain strong. “Over the past 15 years we have experienced the sudden death of a husband, the illness and death of one of our October 99 children, miscarriages, births of siblings, marital affairs, divorces, breakdowns, health issues, deaths of parents… and we’ve really looked after each other. We’ve done some wonderful things to support each other – arranged for a park bench to be erected in a park in Scotland in memory of a loved husband; sent flowers to funerals; released balloons with our own children in memory of our dear Conor Ford who died at age 4 of leukemia; sent care packages at times of hardship, Christmas gifts to our Iceland family during the economic collapse of 2008 so the kids wouldn’t miss out.” With such large groups and potential for anonymity, keyboard warriors and bullies can be a reality. Jo Hutchinson is the admin for the Raising Mum Network. As an admin it is her role to moderate discussion. Given the varying parenting styles today and the range of information and choices available, mums can be very passionate about certain topics. “It is a fine line as an admin of an online mothers group, in deciding if a post is a healthy debate, or a non-productive, hurtful argument. When a post begins to attack a person or shame their parenting choices, in my opinion that is bullying.” kidmagazine.com.au 35
Of Carlson’s group she says, “The administrators have done an amazing job of setting a supportive, non judgemental culture and whenever it strays from this, they always remind everyone of some basic guidelines of respect, non judgement and maturity.” So if you are thinking about connecting with mothers online, here are some words of advice from our mothers group veteran, Ali Green. “Go for it! But be nice, be tolerant, don’t judge. Embrace your cyber sisters and enjoy the journey of motherhood together. You’ll learn so much, and you’ll make some dear friends. And best of all, when your children are old enough to travel and explore the world, they will have cyber aunts and cousins who will be waiting with open arms to welcome and host them.”

Travelling with bab Sara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor
When our daughter was four-months-old we decided to do a four hour car trip up to Forster/ Tuncurry on the NSW Mid North Coast. Two weeks later we ended up flying to Melbourne for the week. To say that we were a bit nervous about the trips was an understatement. Not that our baby is usually a screamer, but I had visions of a screaming baby, irate passengers and a very frazzled me. I needn’t have worried though as we prepared well for both trips. Here are a few things I learnt about how to survive when travelling with baby. With a bit (a lot?) of preparation and planning you will be on your way.
Getting to your destination Time your travel around sleep and happy times in your baby’s day. The witching hour is probably not the best time to go but just before bedtime or before a nap is ideal. If you are travelling by car to an unfamiliar destination, research rest stops in advance so you aren’t faced with a panic when you need somewhere to stop to feed or change your baby. Be prepared for a few extra stops than you would normally take. If travelling by plane, take a dummy or bottle for baby to suck on during take-off and landing to help them pop their ears. Breastfeeding also works well but if they aren’t due for a feed it may not work in your favour. If you are taking pram and car seat with you ask at the check-in counter as with most airlines you can check these items in for free without having to pay excess baggage fees. Take a carrier or sling to the airport so you have something to carry baby in between check-in and boarding the plane. The SUPPORi Baby Sling is ideal as it weighs only 80g and can easily fold up into your handbag when you board the plane.
To hire or take? With our trip to Melbourne we decided to leave the pram and car seat at home and hire them in Melbourne. We used www.justtakethekids.com.au and they were fantastic. The items were clean and were waiting in our
kidmagazine.com.au 38
hire car when we arrived. To find local hire companies at your destination just google ‘baby hire’ and the name of your destination. If you do decide to take your own pram and car seat make sure you remove any toys or objects hanging from the sides and ensure that your name and contact details are securely attached somewhere.
Entertainment At home it is likely that you have an activity mat, books, toys and other things to keep baby entertained. While travelling you may only bring one or two things with you so you are limited in moving baby from one activity to the next. I made the mistake in Melbourne of heading back to the hotel for nap time at around 3pm. Olivia only slept for 30 minutes and hubby didn’t get back to the hotel from work until after 7. That was one long afternoon! The Tiger Tribe Learning Flash Cards are ideal to take away. Secured with a plastic ring the cards are bright and colourful to engage little eyes.
SUPPORi Baby Sling, from $57.95, www.littlem.com.au
Where to stay If you are driving or hiring a car you will be more flexible with where you can stay. If you won’t have a hire car, make sure where you stay is within easy walking distance to main attractions you will be visiting or close to public transport. Research hotels in advance as most

Bottles and feeding
will be able to provide a portacot for baby to sleep in. A fantastic product to consider taking with you is the Sleepover padded fitted sheet. It fits securely over the portacot base and has openings to still allow the base to be securely attached with the Velcro straps.
Getting around
Bottles can take up loads of room in your suitcase so look at investing in a system like Kiinde. The bags are disposable and don’t take up near as much room as a bottle. While designed for breastmilk they could also be used for formula. Hotel rooms will always have a kettle so you can use that for sterilising and heating bottles. If baby is on solids, stock up on a few pouches of baby food from the supermarket. Check if there is a supermarket nearby where you are staying to purchase other suitable foods such as avocado and banana to give them an intake of fresh food.

It is likely you will be using public transport you want to make sure your pram can be easily manoeuvred and lifted by hopefully willing strangers! The BABYZEN YOYO weighs only 6.4kg and folds up to a very compact

By Louise Lazendic This year it was a Lego party for my gorgeous boy Alek who turned 4. Alek decided on the theme so I thought it would be great to incorporate chevron yellow into the styling. I used our chevron yellow party ware and incorporated the chevron design into the invite, thank you tags, chocolate bars and buffet sign. The cake was a chocolate mud cake, made into the shape of a number 4, I added the actual Lego buggy’s and Lego men. I also had lego cookies made into the shape of lego heads. The cupcakes I made myself and added fondant Lego blocks to each cupcake. I designed the Lego thank you tags and added them to chevron yellow treat bags, using the same graphic I designed the buffet sign and personalised chocolate bars. To keep the kids entertained we had a parachute and some fun chasing games. As the party was in the middle of summer, it was such a hot day. We had a water jumping castle set up, which was a huge hit, and the kids managed to cool down. Frozen By Simon Miraudo Who could have guessed Disney’s latest, non-Pixarproduced musical would become history’s highest grossing animated movie, or that its show-stopping tune ‘Let It Go’ would become a karaoke anthem to rival ‘I Will Survive’? Today, Frozen sits among the top 10 biggest ever box office hits, and that song remains stuck in our heads. Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Frozen is the result of a decades-long effort to animate Hans Christian Andersen’s fable The Snow Queen. In the Nordic nation of Arendelle, Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel) struggles with her magical ice-making abilities. When her powers are inevitably revealed to the world, she accidentally freezes the rivers and flees into the wilderness. Her sister, Anna (Kristen Bell), follows close behind, recruiting ice-merchant Kristoff (Jonathan Groff ) and talking snowman Olaf (Josh Gad) for help in ending the cold spell. It’s no surprise Menzel brings the house down at every opportunity, but Bell shows off some impressive pipe-work too. Credit must partly go to song-writers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, whose off-beat humour permeates proceedings. So does their subversiveness. Consider how Elsa - while performing ‘Let It Go’ - triumphantly turns her back on the haters and embraces the lifestyle she’d been told to hide for so long, and it suddenly makes sense why religious bloggers got so angry at the LGBTQ-friendly flick. With a billion dollars in the bank, two Oscars on the shelf, and the ire of ridiculous, right-wing pundits, Frozen has pretty much completed the trifecta of cinematic accomplishments.

How to choose a tradie Russell Wheeler, BA, LLB Lawyer, negotiation consultant and founder of BuyersVoice.com.au
large number of results without any reliable way of determining who’s good, reliable, reasonably priced, etc. And who’s not. Unfortunately you can’t even rely on reviews – up to 30% aren’t genuine. People are hired to write fake reviews, and do it for as little as $5 a pop. But, even if a review has not been paid for by the tradesman, how do you know that it hasn’t been written by a friend or family member? Or a competitor? You don’t. And what about those directories who help you find a tradesman? Well, the tradies pay to be listed so decide for yourself whether this is a good source of information.
2 sources you can rely on
“OMG! It was frightening”
I’ll bomb your house Pip, my wife, was referring to a tradesman who threatened to bomb our house when I insisted upon him completing the job he agreed to do. Lucky I am a lawyer, and know how important it is to specify everything in writing. Otherwise we wouldn’t have had a leg to stand on when he refused to cement render our chimney as part of the job – he had forgotten that the chimney was in my email, which was what he quoted on, and he wasn’t happy! The mistake I made was accepting the most attractive quote and not following my gut feel about the character of the person. There was a reason his quote was the cheapest!
Beware the online review You’d think the internet would make these things easier. But try googling “plumber” or “electrician” and you are likely to end up scratching your head because of the
kidmagazine.com.au 60
The first thing to do is ask for personal recommendations from friends, family and neighbours. Or, if you need a tradesman to install a product supplied by another business, you can ask that business for a recommendation.
Check their experience, qualifications and insurance There are a lot of dodgy operators out there, so make sure the tradie you choose is licensed and has insurance. Then check his/her specific experience – being licensed doesn’t mean he has experience in the particular type of job you need done, so ask about this (and other things).
BuyersV
Then compare what he has to say with other tradesman you speak to.
Do you always follow your gut feeling?
Depending on what you need done, it may be a good idea to look at similar jobs he has done recently. Or speak to the people he has worked for. The more questions you ask, and research you do, the less likely you are going to end up with tradie problems, which happens regularly.
Do they come across as personable, professional, friendly and interested? Although not a dead cert, if you get a good feeling about a person, that’s a good start. Just make sure you don’t rely totally on your gut feeling – most of us can be suckers for a reassuring manner and friendly smile. In fact, some of the dodgiest operators are very personable.
Gather quotes It is obviously very important to get a quote but some people are silly enough to call a tradesman to fix a problem without even checking their hourly rate in advance. Guilty, your honour! I was in a hurry one day and forgot to ask a plumber I hadn’t used before how much he charged. When he arrived to do the job and told me his rate was $220 an hour plus GST it reminded me of the story about the fellow who became wealthy by giving up law and becoming a plumber! It is important to get several quotes, partly because it is not uncommon for a tradesman to provide an outrageously high quote knowing that some people have no idea what the going rate is or what is fair. It’s an awful feeling when you subsequently find out that you been ripped off. It is also very important to ensure the quote is sufficiently itemised – you don’t want them bombing your house! Seriously though, check the details carefully and ensure everything is included, and that timelines are specified. Also check for add-on expenses such as call out fees and whether they charge a margin on top of the cost of goods they supply.
sVoice kidmagazine.com.au 61
Choose local By choosing a local tradie you’ll not only be supporting your local community, they may charge less because they don’t have as far to travel, they will be familiar with local council rules, and they will know where to go nearby to purchase supplies. Most importantly, they won’t want to lose their reputation in the area by doing the wrong thing.
Be a good client Some people treat tradies in an offhand way. If you treat them well, they will want to do a good job – the outcome will be better and it will be a more pleasant experience. I always offer a tradie a cup of tea or coffee while they’re on the job. At the same time you can keep an eye on what they’re doing. If something is not being done the way you want, it’s better for all concerned to pick it up earlier rather than later. BuyersVoice.com.au is THE place to make a complaint about dodgy tradesmen, and other consumer problems, and to check the reputation of a person or business. Sarah Cottman, Head Angel, HEAVENLY ORDER June is a great time to sort the garage out once and for all! Creating a space to park the car and get into the house out of the cold becomes much more desirable at this time of year! The garage can be dual purpose, using it not only to store items (including the car) but also as a ‘wet room’ for those oh so messy kids items such as muddy football boots when getting in and out of the car. And, by focussing on the garage you will find that all this messy, dirty clutter that takes up space inside the house magically disappears, leaving you with a cosy, tidy space to spend time with the family. 1.Start by deciding on the purpose of the garage. It might include space for: a. Parking the car b. Sports equipment storage c. Luggage & travel items d. Christmas decorations e. Home & Garden Maintenance f. Wet area 2. Once you have decided on the purpose, remove the items that no longer belong in those areas and decide how to store or keep those items that are to stay. 3. Be ruthless! Make sure that all those broken pieces of sporting equipment that you’re going to fix one day are relegated to the council clean up pile and stored in a box. If you do manage to find a use for them, or the time to fix them, you can. Or, when the 6 monthly throw-out arrives, taking the items out is a 5 minute job. It also creates a space for future broken items to live while they’re waiting to depart the home! 4. Clear, sturdy (& air tight where necessary) storage containers are best. Content can be clearly seen even for the most organizationally challenged members of the family! Old fashioned (cleaned) garbage bins are great to store sports equipment like hockey sticks, fishing poles, baseball bats etc. 5. Hooks! You can’t beat a sturdy hook. All sorts can be placed on them from school or sports bag to hats, raincoats. A great way to keep them organized is to assign a hook per person and label them. Labels don’t have to be boring! Consider printing out a picture of the person (or pet) who will be using it or finding an image for the purpose such as a helmet or library bag. Once this is done, it’s time to make your bedroom organized and cosy in July! And, if the thought of attacking that garage is just too overwhelming for you, hire a Professional Organiser!
