EDITOR’S LETTER

hi!

I

wish hibernation was an option as the colder months approach. Lately I have found myself curled up on the couch with a blanket for comfort every night with a cup of tea in hand. The only thing I find joy in for the cool months is the fashion. From boots to coats and beautiful knits there is something to be said for the sophistication of a Winter wardrobe. Over the next few months we will be bringing you the best Winter fashion to fill your wardrobes with the latest trends that will keep you warm. We also have the best Winter clothes for the kids so they stay rugged up and happy. Mother’s Day is just around the corner and is such a wonderful time to get together with your family to both celebrate your experience of being a mother and to thank your own mother for everything she has done for you. Whether you enjoy breakfast in bed, a family BBQ or a relaxed dinner we have some delicious recipes in this issue that the whole family will enjoy. We also have some gorgeous gifts you can casually show your loved ones to make sure you get spoilt on your day! My top five for May are: 1. The fashionable and functional designs from Laila & Spot – clothes designed for new mums on p 14. 2. Amity Dry’s musical Mother, Wife and the Complicated Life is touring Australia over the next 2 months and is set to be amazing – p40. 3. Busy Kitchen Mum’s Eggs Benedict – all I can say is YUM! – p58. 4. Vanessa has tracked down five of the best kid-friendly cafés around the country and now I wish I was a kid again! – p48. 5. The new Special K oats and honey is my favourite cereal – read about it on p 43. Until next month, you can find us at www.kidmagazine.com.au for more fabulous fashion and kids news.

New Mum Style withLaila&Spot

It all started with an idea while breastfeeding her son that led Laila Fernandez to switch from her career in IT to launching a new fashion label designed just for new mums. It was her husband who pushed her to launch Laila & Spot after hearing her talking about her ideas for hours. “I didn’t fit or feel comfortable in my old clothes or my maternity clothes. As a new mum, I still wanted to look good, but it was impossible to find great designs that were practical to wear while doing all the things new mums have to do” said Laila. She had particular designs in mind that she knew would compliment her postbaby body and relentlessly searched for these only to find they didn’t exist in the market. Not coming from a fashion background was a challenge but Laila used the precious hours while her son was sleeping during the day to research the industry. “It isn’t an easy road but part of it is ‘ignorance and bliss’ and this works to my advantage. Because I don’t understand how a typical fashion label works I pushed the boundaries and made it work for what I was looking for“, she said of her journey to launching the label. Since launching, Laila has received amazing feedback from mums who say how fabulous it is to wear something that makes them look and feel normal. That is the beauty of the range – basic pieces that accentuate all the great bits of a new mums body but include hidden features to provide functionality for breastfeeding but also comfort, a big plus for new mums. Some of the features include: kidmagazine.com.au 15

• Leggings with a soft waist with elastic only at the back. Ensures a good fit without intrusive pressure. Perfect for new mums particularly after a C-section • Dresses with concealed breast-feeding access through a 2 way zip with privacy layer underneath for discreet and easy feeding in public • Lounge Pants with soft waist and loose-corded elastic for the right fit, perfect for just after baby is born • Tunic & T-shirts with discreet feeding through a lift up ‘second skin’ that provides a flattering look and privacy with no tummy exposure • Skirt with soft waist - no elastic, with fabric and design aimed at a really comfy fit

As a business woman and mother Laila admits it can be very challenging with long work hours talking with her offshore manufacturer. It isn’t all bad though and she says she enjoys the luxury and flexibility of having breakfast with her son while most people are rushing off to work at 8am and being able to break during the day to spend time with her family. Her advice to other mums considering starting their own business is to be passionate and committed about your idea. “Since I became a mum my whole drive has changed and I will only do things that are important to me because your time is really limited.” Laila plans to extend the label by adding more basics to the range, introducing back-to-work pieces and items for special occasions. The next adventure for Laila & Spot however is bringing denim back into the new mums wardrobe. Laila says, “When you are a new mum a denim skirt is a bit restrictive and you don’t want that hard waistband, you want something that is a bit softer around the belly”. The Laila & Spot range can be purchased from lailaandspot.com.au.

Choosing the perfect fit during pregnancy Find out how with the experts Pinching, gaping, high riding and dimpling … Finding an attractive and comfortable bra at any stage of life is a challenge for most women. Finding one during pregnancy that is comfortable, adapts with changes in your body and makes you feel attractive can be a nightmare. Tracey Montford knew this all too well when she established maternity lingerie brand CAKE Lingerie after her own pregnancy. A pioneer in highly constructed and beautiful lingerie and sleepwear, Australian owned CAKE Lingerie is an award-winning global brand popular with celebrities including Pink, Heidi Klum, and Penelope Cruz – and our very own Jackie O and Chrissie Swan. Tracey says a poor-fitting bra worn during pregnancy and nursing is not only incredibly uncomfortable, it can lead to back and neck strain. “Hormonal changes results in rapid growth and fluctuations of the breasts. The skin and tissue is placed under a considerable amount of strain. This is followed later by loss in elasticity and volume.” Structured and supportive maternity underwear is designed to protect breasts against ligament damage and provide a much desired relief and comfort for pregnant women and new mums. Tracey explains: “There are six different

kidmagazine.com.au 24

types of bra tailored to suit a woman’s body shape and requirements based on the stage of her pregnancy. This begins from as early on as 0-3 months, up until she finishes nursing.” 0-3 months - An increase in cup size begins early on in a pregnancy with hormones creating glandular development and leading to engorgement in the first three months. Tracey advises on a stretchy, seamless maternity bra. “This will grow with you and will provide relief as you begin to develop,” she said. 3-6 months - The breast growth will start to slow during this period, however the ribcage will begin to expand. Tracey suggests: “Select a flexible-wire, nonwire or contour bra with six hooks and eyes. This will provide greater support and will allow extension with the body to manage growth.” 6-9 months - Cup-size at this stage will last into the first four weeks of nursing. “Purchase a minimum of three supportive nursing bras providing you with one to wear, one in the wash and one for your drawer. I recommend a flexible-wire, soft cup, contour, or fuller figure bras,” Tracey says. Nursing - Flexibility is a necessity. Tracey explains: “Your breasts will swell and rapidly change size as they try to regulate milk supply. Use a nonwired, stretchy, seamless maternity bra that grows with you. A comfortable, non-restrictive bra can help avoid complications such as mastitis.”

Tracey’s top 6 tips for maternity underwear shopping 1. Select a bra that fits comfortably to the near-tightest hook to accommodate the ribcage as it expands from the second trimester onwards. 2. The bra should provide good bust support and, importantly, doesn’t flatten or squash your breast. Your breasts should appear separated and fit clearly into each cup. 3. A bra must comfortably fit towards the loosest hook. This will accommodate the ribcage as it contracts to its original size. 4. If you only need to increase your band size, remember to drop a cup size and vice versa. Bra bands are designed relative to body size. 5. Properly fitted flexible-wire bras provide superior, unrestricted support. When selecting one, ensure it sits under and behind the breast tissue. 6. Importantly, your size will most probably vary with each pregnancy. It’s best to be re-sized to ensure you receive the right levels of comfort and support.

Interacting fitting guide Mums-to-be can avoid spend less time in shop fitting rooms by having a play with Cake Lingerie’s interactive bra fitting guide to see what style best suits. The brands online size calculator is also the perfect shopping tool! To discover more or to see Cake Lingerie’s latest beautiful designs, visit ww.cakelingerie.com.au

As Winter is fast approaching many people will be considering the annual flu shot to protect them from the nasties this Winter. According to researchers at the University of Sydney, exercise is the key to a successful vaccination. Doctor Kate Edwards from the University’s Faculty of Health Science, Exercise and Sport Science says that doing some exercise immediately before or after a vaccination can boost vaccine response in particular. Doctor Edwards cautions people not to overdo physical activity after a flu shot but engage in moderate activities such as cycling or resistance exercise and avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids.

TIM ALTMAN

TOP FIVETIPS ON BALANCE FOR BUSY MUMS For those readers that don’t know who you are, tell us about the man behind the brand? 1. Do yoga daily - even if it’s only 15 minutes or a few ‘salutes to the sun’. The combination of movement coordinated with breath is fantastic for the body and mind, like a moving meditation. Practice at a yoga studio, or if you’d rather stay at home, use online programs like “Yoga Short Forms” to help guide you. 2. Take time daily to breathe slowly and steadily, breathing in and out through the nose using your diaphragm, or breathing through your belly. The average person breathes twice as often as we are built to (around 30,000 times per day as opposed to 12-14,000 times according to diagnostic norms). Breathing too often deregulates blood chemistry and the nervous system, leaving the body with poor supply of oxygen for energy and can result in the perpetual ‘fight or flight’ activation - which can lead to a range of symptoms and contribute to many different illnesses. If you need some guidance, try this great breathing App “Breathing Well Exercises”. Even 5-10 minutes twice a day is fantastic. 3. Take time out for yourself everyday - no kids, no partner. Busy mums become so conscious of looking after everyone else’s needs that they tend to neglect their own. Spend some time reading, practicing yoga, deep breathing or meditating, walking, jogging or gardening.

kidmagazine.com.au 28

4. Set aside time to spend with your girlfriends as often as you can. Good quality ‘women only’ time can be a real treat and a great break from family life. This can be done exercising, shopping or going to a café. 5. Make one on one time with your partner daily, and if you have to, schedule time. It can be spent doing anything together - watching TV, having a cuddle, cooking dinner together or going for a walk. This is the most important relationship in your family (and possibly your life!). Set aside at least 30 minutes together; even if it means sacrificing your favourite television show! Tim Altman Respiratory Therapist B.Sc., B.H.Sc (Naturopathy) www.naturalflowretreats.com.au

with Kaz Muddell

Are you wearing the right shoes to exercise? It would seem simple. You just need to throw on any old pair of shoes, as long as they are joggers of some description, right? Wrong! Shoes are very important and there are different types of shoes to suit different postural challenges. If you don’t buy, or wear the right shoes then you are at risk of injury. Purchasing the right exercise shoes can be an expensive process, however ending up at the physio if you hurt yourself can be more expensive, and time consuming. We all have a certain posture and our feet roll in (pronate), roll out (supinate) or we are a neutral foot (we neither roll in or out). If you pronate or supinate then you could be at risk of overusing muscles that are not designed to be working as hard which can lead to some discomfort and/or long term injuries. When you are purchasing shoes you should go to a specialist store where the staff understands how to fit your foot properly and they can assess what type of shoe you need based on what you are going to use it for, how many times per week you exercise, and your physical attributes. Some stores will have you run on a treadmill and this is beneficial as they can see the way that you move and can accurately assess your gait and posture.

kidmagazine.com.au 31

There are particular types of shoes for running, cross training and sport. Each may be slightly different and they will accommodate the movements you make when you carry out that particular form of exercise. If you roll in you might require a shoe that has more support on the inside of the shoe to raise your arch. If you roll out then your shoe might be raised on the outside to stop you from striking to the outside. These supports are designed to minimise the impact on your body. If you are a runner then you will need a shoe that is more for forward and backward movements. If you do cross training then you may need a shoe is designed to support side to side movements. Occasionally you might need orthotics as well.

The average running shoe lasts for around 500-800km before it starts to lose its support

The average running shoe lasts for around 500-800km before it starts to lose its support. Every individual will wear out their shoes at a different rate based on what exercise they do and

how much they exercise is a week. It’s best not to wear your shoes whilst you are mowing or washing the car as they will wear much more quickly. Find another every day type shoe for these activities and save your good shoes for your exercise programs. Your body will thank you for it!

While Away Guides Have you ever embarked on a weekend away to relax, unwind and spend quality time with your family only to venture out to the main tourist spots pointed out to you by the local visitor information centre? Or maybe you are a super planner and exhaust yourself by spending hours trawling the net to find the best restaurants and activities for the kids at your destination. Whileaway Guides, the brainchild of Sydney friends Kitty Spry and Jess Grinter will be your new best friend. Kitty and Jess returned to Sydney after both living overseas and wanted to share their sense of adventure and eternal curiosity of new places with more than just their friends who were always asking their advice on places to go, see and savour. And so Whileaway Guides was born, designed to be like the diary of a well-travelled friend, impartial and unbiased, offering personal advice based on their own experiences. The guides are 10 folded pocketsized pages of things to see, explore, eat, drink and places to stay. They are written in itinerary style with a cute little map and a calendar of events so you can plan your trip around the action. Features in the guides are unpaid and for each location the team do lots of research, gather hot tips and recommendations from locals and then go check it out themselves. Priced at less than $10, Whileaway Guides can be purchased from whileawayguides.com.au. We asked Jess from Whileaway Guides to answer a few questions and share her top travel tips. What are your top travel tips for busy mums who may not have time to plan a weekend away?

kidmagazine.com.au 36

Location, location, location. When you are thinking of a weekend away, try keeping it within a 2-3 hour radius from home. There is nothing worse than screaming little ones in the back so plan your getaway around where you want to be. Having good facilities is also handy if you run out of anything. What should dads consider if planning a weekend away as a surprise?

request the best seat in the house. You’ll be voted world’s best dad for your efforts.

Mums always love a bit of pampering when going on a weekend escape. Why not get dad to book a special spa treatment or better still, organise a couples treatment! Many of our guides have places for some pampering for example, Daylesford and the Macedon Region in Victoria is famous for its mineral springs and has plenty of places to relax and recharge – just what every mum wants.

What is your destination?

Booking a beautiful restaurant will also win you extra brownie points. There is nothing more romantic than someone taking the time and effort to book a surprise dinner at one of the many restaurants we share in many of our guides – all you need to do is ring up and turn up, it’s that easy and

favourite

For families, one of our favourites is Port Stephen’s in NSW (encompassing Nelson Bay, Anna Bay and Fingal Bay) for its tranquil surrounds and laid-back atmosphere. Only 2.5 hours from Sydney, from the moment you arrive, the craziness disappears and you can spend hours lazing with the kids by the protected beaches or at the many relaxed cafes and restaurants that are kid friendly. The Sunshine Coast in QLD is also a favourite for much the same reasons. The casual atmosphere and easiness to get around gets our vote!

Do you have any other general travel tips? Book ahead for top restaurants. We love our food as much as anyone and there is nothing worse hoping for a spot at a much loved restaurant. Book ahead to avoid disappointment. Can you share a funny travel story from your own experience? We once stayed in a lovely villa in Queensland but unfortunately when we got there, the rain was torrential. Not one to stay indoors, we set out to explore a hidden bushwalk. Afterwards, we came back to dry off and put the soaking jeans on top of a pot belly fireplace not realising it would ‘cook’ the jeans and create lovely holes throughout in a matter of minutes! Not great when you kidmagazine.com.au 37

bring minimal clothes away for the weekend. Luckily I had a dress to cover the holes and improvise until I got home. Suffice to say, we laughed about it for days and still I can’t look at a potbelly fireplace the same way again.

Mother’s Day Breakfast Tray Thanks to Riot Art & Craft for this georgous yet simple Breakfast Tray. Make it for mum to serve her Breakfast in Bed. All supplies can be purchased from Riot Art & Craft Stores. Store locations available at riotstores.com.au. You will need: Art Star Blackboard Paint Art Culture Foam Paint Roller with Tray Artist First Choice Round Paint Brush Size 11 Artist First Choice Unprimed Roll of Canvas Carnival Arts & Crafts Polyester Fibre Filling Jo Sonja’s Aqua Acrylic Paint Urban Artist Petite Stencil – Floral Print Carnival Arts & Crafts PVA Glue Tim & Tess Chalk Art Culture Masking Tape 48mm x 50m Hobby Line Sponge Dabber Brush Boxboard 500gsm (cut to same size as tray) A Breakfast tray

Step 1. Using your foam roller, apply two coats of Art Star Blackboard Paint to the inside of your breakfast tray. Paint the exposed sides of the tray with the Jo Sonja’s aqua paint. Step 2. Take a large piece of unprimed canvas. Place your tray on the canvas, and then cut around, allowing approximately 15cm around each edge. Start applying your floral pattern in a tiled layout across the canvas, by dabbing the sponge with paint onto the stencil on the fabric. Leave to dry. Step 3. Cut a piece of boxboard to the size of the tray, and cover with an even layer of polyester filling, around 10cm high. Wrap the canvas over the polyester filling, tucking in and securing to the underside of the cardboard to create neat corners. Hold the underside in place with masking tape. When you come to the last edge, ensure the filling is even and corners are filled with stuffing, before you tape the last edge down. Step 4. Apply Carnival Arts & Crafts PVA glue across the cardboard side, ensuring there is coverage in the centre and close to the edges (but not so close you get an overflow). Place your tray on top, then leave overnight to dry with a heavy book to ensure it holds tight.

Amity Dry

Mum on a mission Amity Dry is a Mum on a mission. Through her musical Mother, Wife and the Complicated Life she is spreading the message that you are not alone in your journey of motherhood. “We all feel it. We all have days where it’s a struggle and moments where we’re not our best and it’s all overwhelming. I would just say be kind to yourself, take the pressure of yourself. Nobody is perfect in every single moment. We all love it and wouldn’t change it for the world but that doesn’t mean some days we can’t say things are tough”, said Dry of the message she wants to send to other mums. TWith a career including reality TV, starring in the first series of the Block and the recent The Block All Stars’, top 10 ARIA chart success with her debut GOLD album The Lighthouse and musical fame with Mother, Wife and the Complicated Life, this Mum of two knows a bit about the daily juggle that motherhood brings, “My career at the moment is really busy and everyone pitches in but at other times it is quiet and I spend time with the kids. I don’t think you can have a really busy career like I do without help.” Dry started to write the musical when her son was two, after feeling frustrated that all the shows she was going to see where about single women. She saw a gap in the form of the comedy and tragedy that is motherhood. She started with a 40-minute onewoman show and after receiving fantastic feedback, turned it into a full length musical. “I really wanted to focus on the juggle modern women lead. They try to be everything and everywhere at once - trying to put attention into our marriage and into our children and into our career and into our friendships and trying not to lose ourselves in the process. It really is the experience most women go through in their lives.”, Dry says of her motivation for the show.

The show centres around four characters. Jesse, the newlywed with the idea that life will be perfect with her new husband. Kate (played by Dry), the career focused women who doesn’t want kids but falls pregnant accidentally and has to deal with the loss of control motherhood brings. Bec, a stay at home mum of three who is just trying not to lose her mind. And Lily, mum of two school aged children, runs a restaurant with her husband and appears to have the perfect life but things are actually falling apart at the seams. The show has received amazing feedback from both the critics and the audiences. Dry is proud of the message the show sends and the audience feedback, “We talk about things like post-natal depression and the struggle of motherhood and how sometimes when your newborn is crying all day and won’t sleep you just don’t want to be there. Women come up to me after the show and say they thought they were the only ones who experienced that and now they feel better as they have had a laugh and know they aren’t the only one.” Mother, Wife and the Complicated Life is currently touring Australia and will then be heading to Broadway where it has won a coveted place in the prestigious New York Musical Theatre Festival in July. Dry says there is a message in her success, “Sometimes when we have kids we think is that part of my life over or have I lost a bit of myself but you can still have an amazing career, although it’s definitely harder to do it all.” Mother, Wife and the Complicated Life Australian Tour Dates: Melbourne – May 1-5 - Chapel Off Chapel, Prahran chapeloffchapel.com.au / 03 8290 7000 Melbourne – May 10-11 - Karralyka Centre, Ringwood East karralyka.com.au / 03 9870 2888 Sydney – May 23 – June 1 - Everest Theatre, Seymour Centre, Chippendale seymourcentre.com / 02 9351 7940

Ninniku Jip

Bowerbird Café

I absolutely love Korean and Japanese food, which is why I am so excited about Ninniku Jip which fuses both cuisines together to create a whole pile of delicious. This restaurant in Victoria Park, WA, is a place you can take the whole family for dinner and everyone will find something they will love on the extensive menu (they have a tasty looking kids menu as well).

Bowerbird Café is the creation of a North Brisbane mum who has built a place for families, where mum and dad can enjoy a good coffee and the rug rats have space to play and just be kids. Not only is the coffee amazing, but the food is delectable and the staff amazing, Brisbane mums, or even those visiting, take your kids here… you won’t regret it.

Why the kids will love it: There is a large play area right in the middle of the restaurant, so if you are still enjoying your meal or glass of wine, your little one can head in and get distracted with all the play equipment available to them! Better yet, this is a glass-enclosed area so you are able to keep an eye on your kids while still enjoying adult conversation. The kids stay happy and you can enjoy your meal… what more could you ask for. Why you will love it: The fusion of Korean and Japanese is amazing. They have taken the best from both cuisines to create a menu that I want to order everything off. You can go with a few friends and share different dishes and conversation while your kids can go play in the play area. Kids menu winner: We all know kids can be picky eaters. Getting your child to try something new can be hard at the best of times, but Ninniku Jip offers a fantastic kids menu that will have your little one wanting to come back again and again. Get them to try the Chicken Yakisoba, with noodles, chicken and vegies, its healthy and something that your kids will love. Why the kids will love it: Bowerbird is an old house that has been converted into a café/shop, so it has divided the play rooms from the rest of the café perfectly. You don’t have to worry about your kids getting in the way while they enjoy the adorable playrooms here. Your little one will be overwhelmed with choice; chalkboards line the walls, toys of all shapes and sizes, books, puzzles and colouring in books and pencils all available for them to use. Why you will love it: Not only does this place serve some of the best coffee in Brisbane, it also has a shop in the main area of the café with imported shoes, handmade cards, scarves, bags and trinkets lining the walls. You are sure to find the perfect birthday gift, or a treat for yourself amongst the selection of goodies. Kids menu winner: The Bowerbird café has an ever-changing menu of yummy treats both savoury and sweet. The wide variety of cakes, slices, sandwiches, focaccias etc. can be found on display at the counter, where there is sure to be something to satisfy the hunger of your little ones. If your child has a sweet tooth (which, let’s face it, they all do), an all-time favourite at the café is the cake pops, a scrumptious treat that the kids will love. Mother’s Day Eggs Benedict Serves 1 special Mum 1 tsp white vinegar 1 large egg 1 wholemeal English muffin 20gms shaved smoked ham 3 tbl spoons hollandaise sauce

Growing up in a single parent family, especially being a girl, made my mum the most influential person in my life. Not to say that we didn’t have our moments. As any mum with daughters will undoubtedly know, living in a house with teenage girls can be an absolute nightmare. I remember a time when my sister and I weren’t speaking. My poor mum tried so hard and awkwardly to get us talking again. I won’t even mention all the tears, dramas and admittedly a little bit of teenage angst, my mum copped when it came to shopping for new jeans. Now that I am a mum myself, I have realised how much of a tough and thankless gig it is (and my son is only three!) There’s the lack of sleep, seemingly never ending tantrums, the bomb site that was once your nice tidy house, the constant battle to hide veggies, not to mention all the additional bodily fluids you end up wearing. It’s a big and messy responsibility to help shape the wonderful people our kids will grow into. But let’s not forget that it’s amazingly rewarding. The big gummy smiles, crazy giggle fits, kisses better, big imaginations, soft cuddles and that moment of pride when your once helpless little boy learns to button his own shirt, all make it worthwhile. So Dads, this Mothers day it’s time to let mum sleep in (uninterrupted), get the kids into the kitchen and make mum feel really special by cooking up this amazing breakfast. kidmagazine.com.au 58

Hollandaise Sauce 3 egg yolks at room temperature 5 tbs butter at room temperature 1 tbs lemon juice 1 tbs water Salt and Pepper To make the hollandaise sauce; Place a small saucepan half filled with water, over medium heat. Once water is boiling, reduce to low. Place a pyrex bowl over the saucepan, make sure the water isn’t touching the bottom of the bowl. Add the egg yolks and whisk until light and creamy. Add the butter, one tablespoon at a time, until melted and combined. Add the lemon juice and whisk briskly, the sauce will thicken. Stir in the water. Season to taste. Fill a deep frying pan about half way with cold water. Place over a medium heat. Add one the white vinegar. Bring the water to a simmer, using the end of a spoon; create a whirlpool in the middle of the water. Crack the egg into the whirlpool. Simmer until egg whites are set and cooked through. Meanwhile, split the English muffin and toast lightly. Spread with butter. Place some shaved ham on top. Use a slotted spoon to remove the egg from the water, place on top of the ham. Spoon over warm hollandaise sauce. Place on a tray with cutlery, napkins, juice and a small vase of flowers. Serve to mum in bed
