Unwinding & Destressing at Home Vicki Brent,The Body Shop At Home™ Consultant
Tip 2: Just Breathe When you’re feeling stressed, short on time and always in a hurry, stop and take a deep breath. Stress can cause your breathing to become rapid so it’s important to introduce deep breathing techniques into your daily routine. Taking deep breaths to slow your breathing will relax your mind, reduce the release of adrenalin in your body, and relax the skin; evening skin tone and redness. The easiest way to practice breathing techniques is to slowly inhale through your nose, feeling your breath start in your abdomen and work its way to the top of your head. Reverse the process as you exhale through your mouth. Each time your mind wanders, bring your awareness back to your breathing—focusing on the sensation as air enters and leaves your lungs.
Finding it hard to wind down after a demanding day? Trying to juggle work, family, exercise and other commitments? Taking an hour or two each day to unwind can not only help you relax and refocus but will rejuvenate your mind and leave you looking as fantastic as you feel. Here are six tips to help you unwind and de-stress from the comfort of your own home. Tip 1: Start Moving After a long day, most people will opt for a seat in front of the television to relax, without realising that exercise is one of the best things to unwind and relieve stress. Keeping active, helps to release mood-boosting chemicals like endorphins, reducing anxiety and improving physical wellbeing. If you haven’t exercised before, starting can be a daunting challenge. Start with small intervals; going for a walk around the block or around the park, and slowly build up the intensity and length until you’re exercising for a minimum 40 minutes a day. You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel overall; you’ll be more focused, handle stressful situations better and best of all, you’ll be getting a much better nights sleep. Hallelujah!
kidmagazine.com.au 30
Tip 3: Scents Enticing your senses at home can help you to unwind and feels just that little bit indulgent. Enjoy a bath with one of your favourite scented products or simply try burning a scented candle. Certain aromas can be energising and invigorating, while others are comforting and calming. Try a vanilla, chamomile or lavender scent if you’re feeling under stress and need to relax. Many herbs and popular scents are linked to relaxing and calming sensations. Taking a few minutes out of your day to enjoy these will help calm the mind, relax your body and assist with sleep. Tip 4: Pamper Yourself One of the best ways to unwind is to treat yourself with a spot of pampering. If your budget allows, head to a day spa for a massage or facial. Alternatively, you can very simply recreate a spa experience in your own home. Light a candle and run a bath, add a glass of sparkling wine, your favourite music and a facemask; you’ll feel like a whole new person. Many mums feel guilty taking time to pamper themselves – don’t. Pampering and relaxing is an essential part of rejuvenating the mind, without it, it is possible for your body to become overworked and exhausted, leaving you feeling stressed, tired and most likely moody.
Tip 5: Chocolate One of the world’s most favoured sweets, chocolate is also a great calming food. High in magnesium to aid relaxation, chocolate also contains anandamine - a neurotransmitter that helps to produce feelings of elation and exhilaration. Chocolate stimulates the release of endorphins, promoting a sense of well-being and a feeling of pleasure. Tip 6: Meditation Meditating is a deep relaxation method that stills the mind and calms the body. Find a quiet and comfortable spot that you feel contented in, and allow your mind to switch off. Repeating a mantra that comforts you is a great way to help you to quiet your mind during your initial sessions; pick a phrase that focuses and empowers you. It can be anything from “I am strong and capable of anything” to “my mind is still, my body is calm, and I am at peace”; whatever resonates the strongest with you is what
kidmagazine.com.au 31
will work the best. There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to creating a mantra, however the most personal ones are the ones that work the most effectively. Meditation can be a tricky thing to achieve, but with practice, commitment and the right mantra, you’ll find the right combination that allows you to switch off and revive your mind, particularly after a stressful day at work or a busy day with the family. Vicki Brent has been a consultant with The Body Shop At Home for 12 years. During this time she has built a very successful and multi-million dollar business through the At Home party business. Junk Food: A nasty legacy for our children
Providing you pair it with a non-refined sugar, A recent study from Deakin products such as Cacao Wafers allow you to University has found that enjoy many of your chocolate recipes without women who have an unhealthy affecting your child. Cacao wafers is chocolate in its rawest form, containing no added fat, diet during pregnancy are sugar, or sweeteners so that all the nutrients and stimulants remain. more likely to have children with behavioural problems. Keep the body nourished. The results suggest that mums By keeping the body fed throughout the day who eat more unhealthy foods, with real, healthy foods it is never left hungry and such as refined cereals, sweet as a result, you are less likely to have cravings. Unhealthy snacking occurs when the body feels drinks, and salty snacks, during deprived from food. A well balanced diet will also pregnancy have children with keep your blood sugars level. more behavioural problems, Boost your immunity such as tantrums and aggression. Pregnancy cravings are hard to kick and nutrionist Cyndi O’Meara of Changing Habits (www.changinghabits.com.au) has put together a list of tips that will keep you satisfied without affecting the wellbeing of you children.
Have a protein enriched breakfast. Having a high protein breakfast is more likely to relax the area of the brain responsible for food cravings and calorie-rich foods. By incorporating a natural or plant based protein powder into your morning oatmeal, you are more likely to alleviate hunger for longer. Changing Habits Inca Inchi Protein Powder is a great source of natural protein that will achieve the desired effect without enduring the nasty processed ingredients of other supermarket brands.
Give in to the chocolate cravings. Believe it or not, chocolate can be good for you. It alleviates stress and in some cases, treats depression. However most of what has graced our supermarket shelves has been tainted by additives and preservatives that remove the integrity from the source. kidmagazine.com.au 33
Cut out processed foods and anything that is not giving your body the goodness it really needs. Forget about pre-packaged meals and fast food, you’ll soon find yourself feeling run-down and even sick. By buying foods in their whole state that have been produced by ethical means, the body and the immune system will become stronger and will be more likely to withstand foods that may hold bacteria.
Go Green. Where possible, eat organic goods. There have been several studies linking pesticides commonly used on foods grown in Australia to ADHD in children. Always ensure that your food has not been in contact with chemically produced pesticides by eating good quality organic foods. Go to a farmer’s market if you can and don’t be afraid to ask them questions about what you’re buying.
Make every bite count. Forget the old adage ‘eating for two’ – when you’re pregnant, it’s all about quality over quantity. Make sure that everything you’re
putting into your body is good for you and good for baby. Resist pointless overeating, with a good mix of nutritious wholesome foods you’ll give your child everything they need and won’t feel starved. Surprisingly your energy needs only increase slightly when you’re pregnant!
Supplement your diet. Lots of women resort to store bought supplements when they’re trying to have a baby and throughout their pregnancy. While it’s important to give your baby what it requires to grow well, there’s no need to resort to tablets and capsules, many of which are created chemically and contain all sorts of dubious ingredients. Simply look to nature, to increase your folic acid add more leafy greens to your diet and eat more citrus fruit and raspberries. This way you know exactly what you’re eating and will see all the same benefits.
Listen to your body Unfortunately, for some women morning sickness is inevitable and quite often it’s difficult to properly sustain yourself. When you’re unwell it’s important to listen to your body, eat what you can keep down and try to keep your food intake balanced. When pregnant our body releases the HCG hormone, which tells it to use reserve fat stores for sustenance when it’s deprived. If you have some stored fat this works a treat to help the baby and you survive the morning sickness, if you don’t have stored fat cells then it is important to try to get down what you can good quality at all times. Also, it’s vital to stay hydrated so sip water throughout the day, not just at mealtimes. Avoiding spicy and fatty, processed foods should also help your symptoms.

Not your typical nutritionist, Cyndi O’Meara disagrees with low-fat, low-calorie diets, believes chocolate can be good for you and thinks cheating and eating yummy food are important parts of a well-balanced diet. The author of two bestselling books, Changing Habits, Changing Lives and the accompanying Changing Habits, Changing Lives Cookbook, Cyndi believes we need to eat our way to good health, cutting out technology-driven foods that have been altered drastically from their natural state. We need to get back to the natural foods that our grandparents ate – real butter, full fat non-modified milk and healthy fats. Forget crash diets, fads and calorie counting – Cyndi is all about knowing what goes into our bodies and working towards manageable and sustainable change. Since releasing Changing Habits, Changing Lives in 1998, Cyndi and her husband Howard have expanded Changing Habits to not only be an information company including, books, audios, videos, e-books, programs, protocols, reports, newsletters, clubs and social media but also ethical, nutritious foods. Howard and Cyndi saw that there was a need to not only provide information but to also make the food Cyndi talks about more readily available to everyone. The company has grown exponentially and now provides not only food but also food supplements based on the philosophy of Cyndi’s first book. You can find Cyndi online at www.changinghabits.com.au

baby cinema sessions If you thought your movie going days were over when you became a mum then you haven’t heard of the Village Cinemas’ Baby Friendly Sessions. Playing the latest release films, including G & PG films as well as rom-coms and good family dramas that parents and carers will enjoy the Baby Friendly Sessions are a relaxed and friendly environment where you will be made to feel comfortable – even with a crying baby! At the sessions easy access is provided for prams, rockers and carriers; cinema lights are dimmed so you can still enjoy the movie but not in the regular pitch-black darkness so you can still see your bub. The sound is also lower than regular movie sessions so you can have peace of mind given the sensitivity of your little ones eardrums. All the other cinema goers are in the same position as you so you aren’t going to get anyone turning around to look if baby starts crying or you need to feed baby during the session. The outing might be a chance for you to just sit back and enjoy a film knowing that your baby is welcome and you can take care of them but Baby Friendly Sessions are also a great chance to get together with girlfriends or other mothers from your playgroup to enjoy a movie and then head out for lunch afterwards or do a spot of shopping together. Village Cinemas recommend you pack all the normal baby essentials and assure that there are baby changing facilities at all Village Cinemas for your convenience. Older children are also welcome to attend as are grandparents or anyone who wants to join you and baby for an outing. The sessions run all year outside of school holidays and you just need to look for the pink ‘BUB’ icon next to the session to identify it as baby friendly. Tickets are $10 and babies go for free. Visit villagecinemas.com.au for more information on Baby Friendly Sessions in your local area.

LEGO® The Lord Of The Rings Battle At The Black Gate $99.99 Fly the Great Eagle high above the Black Gate of Mordor where Aragorn and Gandalf the White must distract the Eye of Sauron. Use them to stage a scene while Frodo Baggins and his friend Sam throw the One Ring into the fiery depths of Mount Doom and destroy it forever. To reach the Ring’s final destination, you must defeat the Mouth of Sauron and the Mordor Orcs positioned high in the spiked gate walls. Then breach the gate and lead the attack on the enemy! Includes a Great Eagle and 5 minifigures with weapons: Aragorn, Gandalf the White, Mouth of Sauron and 2 Mordor Orcs. This month’s LEGO was built with the assistance of my seven year old nephew, Mitchell (MJ). Having recently seen The Hobbit and being a big fan of The Lord of The Rings trilogy, MJ couldn’t wait to get his hands on the The Lord Of The Rings Battle At The Black Gate LEGO set. This is a great set! Comes with very detailed minifigures, including the exclusive King of Gondor Aragorn, as well as the Mouth of Sauron and some interesting looking orcs. The set was built so that you can snap together two of them and make one big wall. I will probably be finding another of this set whenever I can just so that I can click them together and expand this. The Lord Of The Rings Battle At The Black Gate LEGO set is aged for kid’s between 9-14 years of age, but was quite easy to assemble for 7 year old MJ (with some assistance). It took about 2-3 hours over two nights to get everything finished, but the end result as I’m sure you would agree is a masterpeice. This is a reflection of the amount of detail LEGO place into every one of their sets. Thanks MJ.

Old school film seems like such a distant memory since the advent of digital cameras. These days a smart phone is just as likely to be used as a camera or video recorder as it is a phone, and along with this have been the development of endless apps to aid with better photography, add funky frames and effects to photos and share your photos with the world. With these changes in photography it seems that the days of printed photos and poring over family albums are gone. Photos are shared electronically, stored on hard drives, saved on a seemingly never-ending camera roll on your iPhone or uploaded to Facebook, or my favourite, Instagram (#instaaddict). But that is changing with a modern spin on the family photo album. We found six absolutely fantastic products that allow you to bring your holiday snaps, candid shots of the kids and everyday memories to life in the most fun and fabulous ways.

Decorate with glitter glue (leave to dry), then assemble into position, and glue to the side of your bucket. Step 4 Make a name tag by writing your name in glitter glue on a piece of foam Step 5 Add a ring made from a chenille stem, punch a hole in your name tag and hang off the handle.

The trick to trick-or-t If you think Halloween is a celebration only championed by those crazy yanks, you’d be wrong. This year Aussie families are expected to carve up more than 110,000 pumpkins and consume over 18 million lollies in the celebration of Halloween. Contrary to popular belief Halloween actually originated in Ireland, with an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain and is widely celebrated across Australian households. To ensure your mighty monsters have a spooktacular Halloween, the Red Fox Party has a few tips and tricks:
kidmagazine.com.au 50
Pedestrian injuries
Pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween. Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. Walk, don’t run, between houses and stick to the footpath. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping and falls.
Respect road rules
A child is four times more likely to be hit and injured by a car on Halloween than any other time. Remind your monsters they still need to follow the road rules, like crossing streets and look both ways and cross only at intersections and crosswalks. Don’t assume the right of way,
treat motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-orTreaters.
Fore warning
Put a leaflet in neighbours’ letterboxes telling them the time when most kids will trick or treat and how to mark their houses if they want to participate. Prepare thank you notes for the kids to hand out for houses that participate. A fun alternative is “Reverse Trick or Treating”, go to houses and hand out lollies! It could be a great way to meet new neighbours and convert some Halloween sceptics.
Safety in numbers
Join up with other monsters for your
neighbourhood adventure, there is safety in numbers. A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighbourhood rounds.
Stranger danger rules still apply
Never enter a stranger’s house, even if they have invited you in after knocking on their door. Stranger danger rules still apply. Don’t go to unfamiliar or unsafe looking houses or areas.
Choose the right costume
Choose costumes that are brightly coloured and can be easily seen in the dark. Brightly coloured treat bags work well to increase visibility. Ensure your child is wearing a costume or mask that allows them to see and breathe easily and make sure they are able to take it off on their own.
Lolly inspector
The loot should not be consumed until it has been inspected at home. It is important to check for any problem lollies that could become a choking hazard, have open wrappers or contain sharp objects. A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats. It is also a good idea to feed the kids dinner before trick-or-treating to avoid cranky hungry half-way melt downs.
Warning!
Go easy on the tricks! Halloween is all about fun, not an opportunity to alienate your neighbours! Consider having your kids sing a song, tell a joke or perform a magic trick instead. It’s important to remember that harmful tricks could come under police attention. At Red Fox Party we have many tips and trips for Halloween, we would love to share with you. We strive to put life into every party and party into every life! We are passionate about celebrations and we have a party solution for all occasions and every member of the family. We know how to throw one hell of a celebration and we’re here to help you become the life of the party! Visit redfoxparty.com. au for more information.

top secutiry tips for a sa home
It is frightening to think that in the 12 months to June 2013 there were over 38,000 recorded incidents of break and enter into a residential dwelling in NSW alone (NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, New South Wales Recorded Crime Statistics, Quarterly Update, June 2013). After being a victim of robbery in 1997, Justin Frankenhauser made a career change to become a Locksmith and help others protect their homes and businesses. After thirteen years of running his own Locksmith business, TopLock Locksmiths in Melbourne, Justin decided to write a book dedicated ‘To the eradication of uninvited guests’. Justin knows that there are questions many people have about home security that they don’t know who to ask or may be too afraid to ask in the first place. Confessions of a Locksmith answers these questions and gives you practical tools to secure your home. Justin has shared his top 6 home security tips to help you sleep soundly in a safe and secure home.

Ensure you have deadlocks on all doors and lockable windows Most insurance companies require deadlocks to be installed in order to get full insurance cover for home & contents. We see a lot of home break-ins where the tenants don’t have adequate locks and items have been easily stolen through doors and windows. Having a deadlock installed makes entering and exiting the home a lot harder, and prevents burglars from removing bigger items.
Install an alarm & CCTV A lot of homes still don’t have a basic alarm system set up, which is important in limiting the amount of time the intruder has on your premise before alerting the security company. Alarms are now advanced enough to

be hard wired, wireless and pet friendly too. Originally a very expensive option, CCTV was seldom used by home owners that couldn’t justify the cost. With the rise in digital video CCTV is now much more affordable and an important part of securing your home. Video can also be used as evidence in court and most home insurers will discount your policy if this is activated.
Ensure your house is visible from the street While it might seem like a good idea to hide the entrance to your home with trees or shrubs, you’re also giving a potential burglar a hiding place. Ensure your front door and windows are visible from the street so that you don’t give a would-be intruder time to plan their entry. Make sure you pack away any gardening tools or ladders in the backyard too, these can often be used to assist break ins. Keep everything locked in a shed or inside the home instead.
Leave a pair of shoes outside & the radio on when you’re not home A pair of sneakers or thongs left outside the front door immediately looks like someone is home. Leave a radio on inside and you will put many would-be intruders off. They’re usually looking for a quick entry and exit, and if they think someone is home are less likely to enter. This is one of my 12 tips for avoiding break-ins provided in the book.
Get rid of any moving boxes or new appliance packaging The reality is that no matter what you do to protect your home, it’s never 100% secure. Make sure you have sufficient home and contents insurance so that in the event of a burglary you are covered. If you can’t afford to replace it but must have it - insure it!
