EDITOR’S LETTER

hi!

T

hey say time flies when you are having fun so that must explain why the past year has gone by at lightning speed. It feels just like yesterday that I decided to turn the Kid Magazine blog into a monthly magazine but here I am 12 months later and loving the decision I made! December is also the month I celebrate my birthday, the month I will welcome our baby into the world and of course Christmas! To celebrate we have the 12 Days of Christmas. From 1-12 December there will be a different giveaway each day (on top of our regular giveaways) with $6000 in prizes up for grabs across the 12 days. See page 2 for the details or visit www.kidmagazine.com.au/12-days-of-christmas Magazine editors need to rest too (especially ones with new babies) so our next issue will be February. In the meantime, we have loads in the December issue to keep you busy!

I have loved Soon Maternity while I have been pregnant and so I had to share them with you on page 12. Soon Maternity

delivers the ultimate pregnancy style Sara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor Pregnancy sparks many changes and challenges in the life of a mum-to-be. Hormones are racing, fatigue sets in, excitement about the growing baby and a wardrobe that becomes increasingly too small and unwearable. In my early stages

of pregnancy I found this to be one of the

hardest things to come to terms with. I didn’t want to lose my sense of style as my belly grew but I also didn’t want to spend a fortune on a maternity wardrobe that I would only

wear for a few months and then pack away. I found a saviour in Soon Maternity.

I have spent the majority of my career working for big Almost a decade ago two vibrant young Melbournians and fashion industry colleagues, Jane Gonzales and Jenni O’Callaghan, recognised the need for a fashion-focused maternity wear label and Soon Maternity was created. In the years since, Soon has become synonymous with pregnancy style and is a must stop destination for the expectant mum. “At the heart of Soon is a desire to help pregnant girls feel beautiful and confident throughout their pregnancy and there-after”, says Soon co-founder Jenni O’Callaghan. “With every collection, we create fashion-forward designs to flatter all pregnancy shapes and sizes, using only the softest, quality fabrics which help you feel comfortable without forgoing style”. A pioneer in designing stylish maternity clothes, Soon uses clever cuts and luxe expandable fabrics to achieve the look of today for the fashion-conscious pregnant girl. Each collection offers daily essentials such as denim, t-shirts, dresses and knitwear, right through to cocktail, corporate as well as nursing wear. In fact, many Soon customers say that they continue to wear their favourite Soon pieces well after baby is born, a testament to the quality of the designs. The Spring/Summer 13 range is divine. From waterfall drape cardigans to drawstring cropped pants, the collection is made with the summer heat in mind using the softest fabrics in gorgeous prints to compliment neutral basics. From casual day looks to evening glam, the range covers everything you will need to look and feel great throughout the warmer months. My personal favourites are the Jess Gathered Maxi Dress and Zarah Zip Top, 2 pieces that have become wardrobe staples for me throughout my pregnancy. The Winter 14 collection launches in March and while I won’t be pregnant anymore I will be keeping my eye out for the items that translate into nursing and post-pregnancy wear. If you are in Melbourne it is worth a visit to the recently opened Soon flagship store. Located in Melbourne’s Hawksburn Village, Soon staff will provide you will personalised styling advice to help you build a fashionable pregnancy wardrobe. For many pregnant women struggling to capture their style with their changing shape this can be invaluable advice. Visit them at 512 Malvern Road, Prahran, online at soonmaternity.com or at selected stockists around the country.

I am not conventional when it comes to colours and so opted for hot pink and bottle green – the two colours that also feature in our nursery – and Sam and Lara from Honey Lane embraced my quirks! They listened to what I wanted and then came up with ideas that I never could have dreamed off. Confetti filled balloons running down the pathway and acting as a backdrop to the food table, vintage white chairs and cushions covering the deck, our home made pom poms blowing on the clothes line and the cutest kids corner that even the big kids enjoyed. My backyard was transformed into a pink and green paradise. www.honeylane.com.au kidmagazine.com.au 21

Family and friends helped out with the catering making a party food that I love. From Grandma’s Sausage Rolls to Nonna’s Meatballs, Aunty Vanessa’s Lemon Cheesecakes and Great Grandma’s Caramel Slice it was an afternoon of indulgence.

Sara’s top 3 tips for a successful baby shower 1. Get help – whether it be from an event stylist like Honey Lane (seriously they were AMAZING) or accepting offers from friends and family you will be thankful at the end of the day and so will your swollen feet! 2. Document the occasion – make sure you get photos of your guests. I was lucky enough to have the gorgeous Cara Loren capturing the day and it took a lot of stress off having to remember a camera. It is fun to document your pregnancy and one day you will look back on your baby shower with your kids and remember what a wonderful day it was. 3. Invite the kids – one of my favourite parts of the day was looking around and seeing all the kids and babies, my baby’s future playmates, having such a fun day. Make sure to keep them entertained though with a variety of activities. Colouring in, Kiddie Create packs or butchers paper to draw on.

Cara Loren was a blessing on the day. She captured so many beautiful moments and the kids just loved her, which you can tell from the photos. Such a talented photographer and a delight to work with. www.caraloren.com.au kidmagazine.com.au 25

Relaxation techniques

Julie Walker Farrow, Independent Business Owner withThe Body Shop At Home™ with body lotion or essential oils. Steam baths are also a good idea, helping to open your pores and leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed. Make the experience last even longer by massaging generous amounts of body butter into your entire body.

Meditate your mind

Meditation is a deep relaxation method that helps to still the mind – it’s the perfect remedy to unwind at the end of a busy day, week or for no reason at all. Find a quiet spot that’s comfortable and allows you to switch off from your surroundings. The mind and the body are so closely related, when your mind is still, the body can begin to relax too. Some people find it difficult to meditate at first, but don’t let this put you off; meditation needs practice and with time you’ll find a rhythm that works for you.

Balancing work, children and your own free time adds worry to your day and can leave you feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and irritable. The issue however, may be primarily external rather than internal – by removing distractions and finding time to relax and unwind will dramatically improve your overall wellbeing. Here are a few simple techniques to help relax: Take a deep breath

Breathing techniques naturally calm your body so it’s important to take the time to concentrate on your breathing. Slowly inhale through your nose, with your breath starting in your abdomen and working its way up. Reverse the process as you exhale through your mouth. Slowing your breathing helps to reduce the production of adrenalin - your body’s natural reaction to stress, so you’ll instantly feel calmer.

Soothe your skin

Believe it or not, stress shows through your skin; breakouts, blotchiness and dry or oily skin can all be your body’s way of telling you that you’re stressed. Run a bath, apply a facemask and soothe your skin

kidmagazine.com.au 31

TryYoga

Traditional gym exercises are a thing of the past, why not relax your mind and body whilst working out? Yoga helps you to develop strength and flexibility, while soothing your nerves and calming your mind. The tranquil and holistic experience of yoga creates a sense of mental clarity that will leave you feeling refreshed and relieved.

Scented infusions

If you’re having trouble switching off at night, try infusing your home with soothing scents that help you to relax. Lavender is known for its calming and relaxation properties and widely recognized for its ability to aid stress-related sleep disorders. Don’t like lavender? There are many other scents linked to relaxation, the trick is to find one that works for you. Julie Walker Farrow is an independent business owner with The Body Shop At Home. Since joining The Body Shop At Home in 2003, Julie has built her business into a multimillion dollar business venture, travelled the world with The Body Shop At Home and explored a variety of ways to calm the body and still the mind. Beauty survival for the festive season Sara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor

A typical December week may look a little something like this for you Monday – 7pm – dinner with playgroup mums Tuesday – 10am – preschool Christmas morning tea Wednesday – 12:30pm – school mums Christmas lunch Thursday – 6pm – school Christmas concert Friday – 7pm – work Christmas party Saturday – 6:30pm – annual Christmas drinks Sunday – 12pm – Christmas BBQ with cousins If your December diary does resemble a class timetable the last of your worries is trying to ensure that Uncle Bob and Aunty Mary don’t cross paths at any of the family celebrations after what happened last year. Thoughts of the last minute Christmas shopping dash, cleaning the house in time for all those guests and when you are going to find time to squeeze in a cut and colour before the hairdresser goes on holidays will likely be filling your brain. While I can’t do your Christmas shopping for you and I certainly won’t be putting my hand up for any house cleaning gigs (ask my husband, I can barely control my own mess!) I can give you a few beauty survival tools to help get you through the festive fun in style.

Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is a girl’s best friend at any time of year, but particularly during party season when you want to maintain a blow dry for a few days or need a clean hair look without having the time to wash. Can be used day or night to freshen your look and have you ready to head to your next function in just a few short minutes. Opt for a fragranced shampoo for some added lift. kidmagazine.com.au 32

I love Lush No Drought dry shampoo, $13.50, available from Lush stores nationwide Why? Citrus scented hair of lemon, grapefruit and lime anyone?

Gel Nail Polish

You likely aren’t going to have the time to paint your nails for each function, let alone take the luxury of heading to the nail salon (can you remember the last time you had time for that without it being Christmas time?). A gel manicure will last longer than regular polish (between 1-2 weeks) and you can buy kits to do these at home. Pick neutral or softer colours that will go with a variety of different outfits. I love CND Creative Nail Design VINYLUX Weekly Polish, $19.95, available from fine salons, spas and nail bars nationally and at www.creativenailplace. com.au Why? Available in 62 shades, dries in eight and a half minutes and lasts for one week with no UV light required

Foot Cream

Summer tends to be drying on your feet as it is but then add standing on your feet all day/night in high heels and it is a recipe for dry, aching and cracked feet. Make sure to nourish your feet, particularly if you have been standing on them for long periods. Lather them with a foot cream before you go to bed to keep them soft and moisturised. If you have time soak them for 5-10 minutes in a foot spa or tub of warm water before you apply the cream. I love Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Concentrated Cream, $4.20, available from Priceline, Chemist Warehouse, Woolworths, Coles, Kmart, Target, My Chemist, selected Pharmacies and selected IGA Why? Firstly the great price. Secondly I love the smell and how thick the cream is. You can feel the moisturising magic as you rub it in.

Body Oil

Just like your feet it is also important to keep your skin moisturised to avoid drying. Sunscreen during the day is non-negotiable (who wants unsightly

red skin under their gorgeous cocktail dress not to mention how bad sunburn is for your health). A body oil will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth and ready to tackle any crowd. I love Michael Kors Liquid Shimmer Dry Oil Spray, $90, available from Myer, David Jones, and limited Perfume Connection stores Why? Not only does this moisturise but also contains tiny golden particles to leave your skin shimmering along with a beautiful fragrance to leave you smelling sweet.

Face Mist

You may not have time to reapply your makeup in between events so keep a face mist in your handbag so you can spray on for a quick and refreshing pick me up. Remember that removing your make-up each night when you get home is the most important step to keeping your face glowing throughout the festive season and no face mist will make up for that! I love The Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist, $23.95, available from The Body Shop retail stores or online at www.thebodyshop.com.au Why? Vitamin E is great for skin and the delicate rosewater scent will instantly calm, relax and cool your face.

putting the school in school holidays By Emilee Carberry

The summer school holidays are a time for children to chill out, rest and regroup for the busy year ahead of them. It is a time for friendly catch ups, exciting holidays and amazing adventures. Through all of this enjoyment, it is common that our children’s academic knowledge and skills are often overlooked. It is important for parents and students to not let school be forgotten about throughout the school holiday period. Often children’s numeracy and literacy skills diminish and go backwards and this can add to the stress and anxiety that the new school year can bring. The good news is that there are some amusing, engaging and creative ways to keep your child’s literacy and numeracy skills developing while keeping them entertained and stimulated throughout these upcoming school holidays. Children are so tech-savvy and are immersed in technology in all aspects of their life, including at school. Integrating technology into school holiday activities can engage and motivate your child and increase their literacy and numeracy skills for the upcoming school year. This can be accomplished by incorporating mathematics into apps and safe websites to use on the iPad, iPhone or PC.

to develop their reading skills. They can also focus on sight words and develop their spelling skills through fun games and activities. Creating online story books is an exciting way for children to share their imaginative ideas. www.storybird.com is a great site to create, read and share stories. Illustrations can be added and the story book can be customised. Stories can then be shared with family and friends through the safe and secure website. If your child is interested in comic books, then www.storyboardthat.com is a great site for children to create and develop their own custom comic book strips. The graphics are great fun and this is a site that is sure to engage your children.

Top Tip: Try a search under the ‘education’ category on iTunes. You will be amazed at the fantastic free apps that you can download that will have a positive impact upon your child’s learning. Some other great downloads and websites include: Lumosity has been raved about by professionals such as Dr. Oz and the Wall Street Journal. Lumosity is a free app that is used to stimulate the mind and develop memory skills. The games and activities on the app will allow children to use problem solving skills that are catered to their personal profile For the little ones, Maths with Springbird HD is a fun and engaging app. Children can choose from a range of colourful and fun bird characters to play as and practice their mathematical equations. With a parent’s corner, you can customise the game to ensure children cannot purchase upgrades and that they do not have access to other apps. For literacy, Reading Eggs is a great app for children and many will be familiar with the program from school. Children are able to follow along with different stories

kidmagazine.com.au 59

Another great idea is to have your child create an online blog to document all of the fun activities and adventures they encounter during the school holidays. This is a fantastic way for children to continue developing their literacy skills and have them writing in an exciting way. An imaginative twist can be placed on the school holiday blog entries by turning them into a narrative. Check out www.wordpress.com or www. blogger.com for easy to use blog websites. They are free to create an account and privacy settings can be customised by parents. You can then send your child’s blog link to family and friends around the world for them to share in the excitement. So why not download some of these free apps and log onto some great educational websites to ensure your child’s literacy and numeracy skills are polished and ready to go for the next school year. Happy Holidays! Emilee is a recent primary education graduate from Macquarie University. She is currently teaching kindergarten to year six in various primary schools around Sydney. School holiday survival tips Sara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor

The summer school holidays are just around the corner. The excitement of Santa visiting and the thought of all that time off school will get the kids through the first week or so. And then what? The change in routine from school term and the Christmas recovery might have you tearing your hair out. Every family situation is different but there are a few general tips you can take away to help you survive and thrive this school holidays. 1. Do something to mark the start and the end of the holidays. Pick an activity your family love to do together, whether it be a picnic, a trip to the movies or a day at the swimming pool and make it a special day. The kids will look forward to the special day at the end of the holidays and will be something to look forward to on any challenging days.

2. Make the most of rainy days.

Bad weather days are great for getting things done around the house or getting the kids to use their imagination for some indoor fun. Indoor picnics can be just as fun as those outdoors and it is amazing to see what kind of fantastic cubby houses the kids can build with a sheet and a few chairs.

kidmagazine.com.au 60

3. Prepare for the new school year.

Start by setting aside regular time each week of the holidays to do a bit of school practice so the kids keep up with the routine of working. It can be as simple as reading a short story and getting the kids to draw a picture of what they have read or playing counting games with dice. You can also get the kids drawing pictures for book covers that can be used when they start back at school.

4. Plan ahead.

If you are going on a long road trip have a plan of attack of how you will manage the hours in the car. Pack music and audio CDs, research games and plan the time of day you will travel to make the trip as pain free as possible. One trick I have heard for encouraging good behaviour on a long car trip is to have a reward the kids get at the end of the trip (e.g. a packet of lollies). Every time the kids break one of the rules throw one of the lollies out the window.

5. Make time for mum and dad too.

Don’t forget yourself during the holidays while you are busily working to keep the kids happy. Pair up with another parent or group of parents and arrange play dates during the holidays to give each other the day off. Spend the time investing in yourself with whatever activities you love to do.

Erin

We asked a few mums and experts to share their tips for making the school holidays a breeze! If you are taking a long car ride/ road trip, buy a blank scrapbook and fill it out with all sorts of things you see and do along the way. Stick feathers, maps, stickers, postcards in there, get your children to draw pictures or write stories, play noughts and crosses or cut and paste fun and interesting things etc. It’s easy and fuss free and a great memento to keep. Erin, mum of Jonas (5) and Milla (3) and co-founder of Kiddie Create, www.kiddiecreate.com.au The best way to keep my kids entertained is to ensure that they do at least one hour of physical activity each day – vigorous exercise makes kids feel great, keeps them well and makes them strong. Going for a run along the beach or a ride to the park are enjoyable activities for us all! Sue Cutbill, mum of three and founder of Kids Exercise, www.kidzexercise.com.au My 4 year olds favourite rainy day activity is to paint her own shoes and t-shirts. I purchase plain white canvas slip on shoes and white t-shirts from Target and she spends hours decorating them. Not only does she get to proudly wear her own creations but I’ve actually been asked where we purchase her designer shoes from! Carla McConnell, mum of Olive (4) and Willa (5 months) and film producer www.facebook.com/ facefiveproductions

At the start of the holidays - make a HOLIDAYS list together under a few headings: maybe 5 things under each heading 1. Things I can do with friends 2. Things I can do with someone in my family 3. Things I can do for someone in my neighbourhood Kath McNee, co-founder of Family Filter, www. familyfilter.com.au My kids love our activity box. We can’t get to everything the kids want to do during the school term so those things get added to the holiday activity box. We can then make the time in the holidays for all the fun things the kids love to do. It can be as simple as baking cake pops or going to the zoo. We love it! Michelle, mum of Lucy (9), Jackson (7) and Toby (4) In January every year we spend one day where the kids clear out some of their old toys to make way for the new ones they received for Christmas. They can play with them one last time and it is a really fun tradition. Knowing that the toys then go on to children in need makes it even better. April, mum of Charlotte (6) and Mia (5) I love the school holidays as I get to spend more time with my son but it is hard to get all my regular chores done. At the beginning of the school holidays we each draw a job out of a hat and that is our responsibility for the whole holidays on top of regular school term chores. It helps us maintain some order and routine in the house and keeps me sane! Felicity, mum of Jackson (8)

Monsters University By Simon Miraudo If you’ve ever wondered how Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan met, the answer comes in Monsters University, director Dan Scanlon’s prequel to 2001’s Monsters Inc. 17-year-old Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal, who has never sounded younger than 45) dreams of being a professional scarer, but he’s no Sulley (John Goodman). It’s at MU where they first cross paths; initially as stubborn adversaries, eager to out-do one another in the scaring stakes. They eventually team-up, finding a home at the lame Oozma Kappa fraternity, and it’s here Monsters University finds its feet, introducing us to some amusing new characters in the process. Despite being robbed of the Best Animated Feature Oscar, the original Monsters, Inc. is one of Pixar’s finest. Crystal and Goodman made for a fantastic double-act, the animation was eye-popping, and it starred the adorable Boo, whose relationship with surrogate father Sulley made the movie a heartfelt parable about adoption. In Monsters University, the double-act remains, and the animation is even more astounding, but there’s no Boo, literally or figuratively. Whatever hefty piece of heart she represented is absent. The flick still paints an affecting portrait of camaraderie between two unlikely friends, yet it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. Still, this is one of the funnier films the studio has produced. Once upon a time, however, Pixar could also be relied upon for drawing a tear or two (sometimes by sheer force), and this is basically an animated spoof of Animal House. It graduates, just not with distinction. Monsters University is now available on Quickflix. kidmagazine.com.au 64

How to have an (im)perfect Christmas ‘Littleville.com.au’ tips to ensure you have a jolly & stress-free Christmas with your little ones!

In Littleville, Christmas is ALL about the kids and how to maximize our time to spend with them. Often the build up buzz is just as much fun as the actual day so we’ve come up with our favourite cost saving, stress free tips to share with you so you don’t miss out on the fun of the holiday period. 1. Ask your little ones & yourself what matters to you

4. Dear Santa!

Sit down and help your little ones write letters to Santa around mid Nov (to be used by mums for guidance / inspiration and careful editing!) ooh and do post them! Little ones LOVE receiving replies from the North Pole, Australia Post offers this service. http://auspost.com.au/education/santamail/ students/write-santa.html

Before accepting every invitation in town and scheduling every Christmas event in your diary it’s important to ask your little ones what they enjoyed doing from last year (if they remember) and then ask yourself. Sometimes we are juggling so many balls and try to squeeze so much in that Christmas becomes expensive and often a stressful blur.

5. Shop online

2. Get organised – write it all down

Shopping online when the kids are asleep gives you time to browse, no stress, no parking, no bags, all delivered and even gift-wrapped to your door.

Once you decide where to spend your time, make a calendar and map out the details. Then work out what you will need and what is required for those events e.g. food preparation such as baking & gifts shopping. Then add reminders to your phone or add to your diary outlining each event. 3. It’s all about the list!

Create a Christmas shopping list in your Smart phone or notebook. Add ideas to it throughout the year so that you avoid the sometimes-costly last minute panic of ‘what to buy’.

kidmagazine.com.au 66

Be on the lookout for gorgeous gifts at Littleville. com.au for the kids throughout the year and spread the work and the cost. If you get started early you can avoid rushing into buying more expensive items or having to pay for express delivery.

6. Get creative & save money

Children love craft and baking – Get them involved in making Christmas cookies or treats to give as gifts for teachers, friends, neighbours and grandparents. Also, get them to design their own cards and wrapping paper! 7. Break the food rules

Ask yourself what you want to eat on Christmas day! If you love a traditional roast, a BBQ, seafood platter

or picnics then do what you want.

8. Have an imperfect perfect Christmas!

Whatever you decide, the key to making it enjoyable is to plan, write a list and start your food preparations early. Often you can pick up non perishables from as early as Oct and you can put your orders in with the butcher or fish monger so all you need to do is pick it up on Christmas Eve.

Let go of perfect! Your little ones will not remember the table details, the colour palette of the tree or the wrapping paper. Spend time on what matters to you and your family. Get caught up in the fun and excitement with your little ones instead.

The aim is to wake up on Christmas morning (hopefully not at 5am!) with time to enjoy yourself with your little ones rather than crying over the stove in a flat panic or racing around to get everyone out the door.

9. Don’t forget to look after Santa

Santa has a big job caring for all the kids, it would be nice to say thanks by booking him a massage, a pedicure or leave him out his favourite beverage on Christmas eve oh and a few carrots for the reindeer!

Feeding the kids through the summer holidays Cherie Lyden, Kids Nutritionist, www.watermelonkids.com.au

www.watermelonkids.com.au

The summer holiday season can be long and hot and kids can often constantly be saying “I’m hungry”. Lots of playtime, beach time and being outside working up an appetite sees kids craving high sugar snacks and treats. It’s easy to reach for a sugary ice pole or a ready-made pastry to save time, but our kids really don’t need these foods every day. Without the pressure of the school run and with many families taking the Christmas season off work, now is a time to connect with your kids over food. Food is central to entertaining and can be savoured over less rushed family mealtimes. My number one advice for this summer is get the kids involved with the shopping, cooking, preparing and serving of your meals. Whether it’s an everyday snack or the Christmas day dinner for a crowd, being involved allows them to experiment with new recipes, tastes and flavours. They will begin to

understand how ingredients work together and how healthy, wholesome foods can be made to taste even better than some of the nutrient poor alternatives. Stocking the pantry with new and nutritious foods and creating a mess in the kitchen can be fun and a great way for everyone to spend precious time together. Below are some ideas for healthy meals and snacks that you can make together and have to hand when hunger strikes. • Fruit and vegetables, chopped and ready to go accompanied with yoghurt and dips for a bit of variety and fun • Wholegrain cereals and crackers that you can also serve with dips • Nuts and seeds are easy and nutritious and a great alternative to lollies • Freshly squeezed juices or fruit smoothies, full of vitamins and antioxidants • Frozen low sugar yoghurt and homemade ice creams as occasional treats or dessert • Energising salads or vegetable filled frittatas that are quick and easy to prepare • Your favourite cakes or cookies but try reducing the amount of sugar in the recipe. You’ll probably find no one notices and they taste just as good In addition it is important to remember some of the basics. Try to minimise high salt and nitrate foods such as deli meats or junk food as these are not treats for the body. Also keep the water to hand. Summertime can be hot and kids need plenty of water to remain hydrated and energised. Keeping their diets as healthy as possible will help avoid tantrums brought on by sugar highs and lows that sometimes make the holidays very, very long for the whole family. Cherie Lyden is the founder of Watermelon Kids, a passionate holistic kids’ nutritionist, foodie and mother, who believes that kids need to be inspired and encouraged to eat good wholesome food from a young age, as this is when good eating habits are developed. One of Cherie’s aims is to educate families and carers in the importance of good sensible nutrition, so that parents and their children have a balanced approach to lifelong healthy eating. Cherie’s food industry expertise combined with her knowledge of nutrition, parenting, love of wholefoods and cooking, means that she is able to create delicious, simple recipes and eating plans that guide and inspire parents/carers and their children, for healthy, everyday meals.

Ka ngaro o, salsa verde & chilli sausage rolls Makes: 32 445g ready-made frozen sour cream shortcrust pastry, thawed 350g kangaroo mince 150g pork mince 1/3 cup fresh breadcrumbs 1 egg, lightly beaten Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 egg (extra), for glaze Salsa verde 2 tsp baby salted capers, rinsed 4 baby cornichons, chopped 1 anchovy fillets (optional) 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 long red chilli (optional), de-seeded 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp chopped dill, basil, mint and parsley 1 tbsp lemon juice 1/2 tsp finely grated lemon zest freshly ground black pepper Preheat oven to 200째C (180째C fan-forced) and lightly grease baking trays and line with baking paper. For the salsa verde, place all the ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth, then add the kangaroo and pork mince, breadcrumbs, egg, salt and pepper, pulsing until well combined. Place pastry sheet on a lightly floured work surface and halve lengthways, to create two equal sized rectangles. Roll each rectangle widthways to approximately 18cm x 25cm. Evenly divide the kangaroo mixture in half, shape like a sausage, placing down the centre of each pastry rectangle; making sure that the pastry is able to encase the mixture. Firmly bring one long side of the pastry up against the sausage meat and lightly brush what will be the seam with the egg glaze. Repeat with the other side by firmly bringing the remaining pastry up and over the glazed pastry, creating a seal. This will be pretty tight and there should ideally be about a 1cm overlap. Place sausage rolls on prepared baking tray (seam side down) and chill for at least 30 minutes. Cut each large sausage into eight small sausage rolls, snip the top three times with a pair of scissors and brush the outside pastry with the egg glaze. Evenly spread out the sausage rolls onto prepared baking trays. Place in preheated oven, cook for 25-30 minutes or until pastry is crisp and cooked through. Allow sausage rolls to cool slightly before serving. Nutritionals- Fat: 5.5g (3.0g saturated) per sausage roll Calories: 106 per sausage roll kidmagazine.com.au kidmagazine.com.au 72 72

Wild Mush ro om Beef Welli ngton Serves: 8 2 sheets puff pastry 1.5kg fillet beef 250g pepper pate 2 cups sliced mushrooms Preheat oven to 180 C. Remove all fat from the meat. Tie the beef in four places so it holds its cylindrical shape while cooking. Season with sea salt and cracked pepper and sear all over, including the ends, in a hot, heavy-based nonstick frying pan for about 4 minutes. Place the meat on a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes. Remove and allow to become completely cold. In the same frying pan, add the sliced mushrooms and sautĂŠ for 6 minutes or until most of the liquid has evaporated. Season with salt and pepper and set aside to cool. Join the two sheets of puff pastry together, beat pate until soft and spread liberally over the pastry, leaving a 4cm border. Then top with seasoned mushrooms. Remove string from the fillet and place on top and wrap like a present, making sure it is totally encased. Decorate top with strips of pastry and bake in a 250 C oven for 5 minutes. Reduce heat to 180 C and bake for a further 40-45 minutes for a medium fillet. Roasted sal mon, pu mpki n a nd sweet potato Makes: 2 cups 100g pumpkin 100g sweet potato 1 tbs olive oil 150g f illet of salmon, bones removed 1/4 cup frozen peas 4 tsp grated tasty cheese Roast pumpkin and sweet potato lend a lovely natural sweetness to this goodness-packed first taste of fish. Just make sure there are no bones in your salmon before you cook it. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a small tray with baking paper. Peel and roughly dice pumpkin and sweet potato into 2cm pieces. Place on lined tray and drizzle with olive oil. Roast for 20 mins. Add salmon fillet and roast for a further 7-10 mins. If your vegies are getting too much colour, remove them from the oven as you don’t want too much of a crust on them. Meanwhile, microwave steam the peas according to packet directions. Remove vegies from oven and mash pumpkin and sweet potato with tasty cheese (you may need to microwave the mix quickly to help melt the cheese). Remove skin from salmon and flake with a fork, double-checking for any bones as you go. Combine mash, peas and salmon. Can be pureed to desired consistency or left as is. Adding colour to a space can instantly make it feel cheerful, a feeling the young and young at heart can appreciate. The Mexican party theme is popular for summer and its’ brightly coloured decor elements suit both adults and children. Nothing says fiesta like colourful piñatas (and margarita’s for the big kids!). Piñatas strung up from the trees or rafters add colour to the space and also become a fun party activity, as kids and adults try to win the treats contained inside the tissue paper shapes. people find it difficult to dress the setting in a way that is appropriate for all ages. Your outdoor space doesn’t have to look like the aftermath of a Disney merchandise explo-

sion- you can create an entertainment setting that is child friendly and that the grown ups can appreciate too. Colourful decorations, activities to keep little ones entertained and clever items that are kiddie safe can help you find that balance.

As a party host, you want to make sure everyone is having a good time and often for parents, that can be a challenge with kids in tow. Offer up activities and dedicated ‘kid spaces’ for your little guests, giving parents a chance to sit back and enjoy the gathering. For my engagement party, we set up a kid’s table, covered in butchers paper and cute jars of textas, pencils and stamps. Kids and big kids were eager to let their inner artist out. The little ones were preoccupied and in view of everyone, letting the adults have uninterrupted catch up time. You end up with a pretty special reminder of the party as well. There are many beautiful party decor items on the market that are practical and child friendly. I am a big fan of flameless candles, which flicker like real candles but have no naked flame. Avoid glass and china and use serving ware and cutlery in coloured bamboo or printed melamine. Use printed oilcloth to cover your tables to make it easy to wipe away spills. Festive decorations, fun activities and clever child friendly décor can help you create a setting that caters for kids as well as adults. Party on!

About Jessica

Jessica Bellef’s inability to both sit still and say “no”, is the reason she is both gainfully employed and in need of a lie down. With a degree in marketing and psychology, Jess’ work as a stylist is considered and informed. She began her career as a visual merchandiser in the fast paced world of fashion, where she fine-tuned her eye and the ability to think on her feet. She became the visual merchandiser for Top3 By Design, while quite literally moonlighting in the same capacity for the Westfield group. In 2010 Jessica was approached by the Whitehouse Institute of Design, where she taught and developed the visual merchandising and interior styling specialisations, and was presented with the award for teaching excellence in 2012. Joining online retailer Temple & Webster (www.templeandwebster.com.au) in it’s infancy, Jessica has grown with the business to become it’s irreplaceable Head of Styling. She loves living with her fiancée in her shoebox Redfern apartment, yet dreams of escaping to the country where her stylist’s penchant for hoarding beauty has the room to truly take root.
