or the last three months I have been burning the candle at both ends. Between Olivia’s birthday, my birthday, Christmas, hubby’s birthday and all the celebrations that go along with it I am all partied out. This is the third issue of Kid Magazine in three months and I have a pile of laundry so high that even the most seasoned of mountain climbers would balk at the challenge of climbing it. The thing that I haven’t been doing while all this has been happening is taking time out for myself. I love my job and there is nothing I love more than spending time with my gorgeous family but what I’m talking about is time just to focus on me and the things I used to love doing for myself pre-kids. So, with Olivia starting day-care one day per week I have committed to taking a lunch break on that day each week. It might sound silly but it is just an hour where I can make myself some lunch and sit in front of the TV to watch an episode of Dr Phil or paint my nails or read a book with no interruptions! I’ll be blogging about this more so visit www.kidmagazine.com.au or like Kid Magazine on facebook to keep up to date. As usual, this issue is packed with some fabulous features, tasty recipes, craft, book reviews and a beautiful woodlands fashion feature shot by Elise Garner. I’ll be back to normal programming again after this with the next issue out in time for Easter.

Coding for kids Jessica Bee, Flying Start Kids

When your child starts school, a host of new languages are usually available for your little one to learn. Which will be most useful for your child’s future? Mandarin? Spanish? French? Which one to choose? But what if the one of the most useful languages isn’t a spoken one at all, but the written language of computer code? “Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you just want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.“ Steven Hawking Theoretical Physicist, Cosmologist, and Author Should we be teaching five year olds computer programming? It’s an unequivocal reality that we live in a digital world and our children, unlike us, are digital natives. It’s all they’ve ever known. Many of us parents are digital immigrants; we’ve had to learn technology at an older age, having been brought up without the myriad of small screens, or even computers, vying for our attention. Whilst it’s imperative children learn how to use technology, it could well be that this is not actually enough. They should know how it works too. The aim being not to train all kids to be computer programmers, but to give them an understanding of how apps they use are made, how websites are designed and function and how computational thinking underpins so much of our modern world. Educating kids about coding means they can participate actively in the digital world they inhabit rather than just be passive consumers of it. Understanding code will facilitate engagement in not only in traditionally academic subjects like maths and science, but also creative ones such as art and music…

kidmagazine.com.au 18

“Here we are, 2013, we ALL depend on technology to communicate, to bank, and none of us know how to read and write code. It’s important for these kids, right now, starting at 8 years old, to read and write code.“ will.i.am Musician/The Black Eyed Peas and Entrepreneur A number of initiatives are now cropping up to increase awareness and promote change within our educational systems. Perhaps you heard have of the Hour of Code (www.hourofcode.com/au) a global movement designed to introduce computer programming to tens of millions of students in 180+ countries to encourage them to learn programming? “I’m so excited to see the launch of Hour of Code in the UK, in this, the Web’s 25th birthday year. Learning to code gives you a completely new perspective when you look at a computer. Before, you think of it as an appliance -- like a fridge -- accepting what it can do. After, you know that you can code that computer to do anything you can imagine it doing. That’s a massive change ... and a massive challenge!” Tim Berners Lee Inventor, World Wide Web Or perhaps a Code Club – which recently launched in Australia (http://www.codeclubau.org/) - has come to a school near you? Even if you have not heard of either of these initiatives, if you have an iPad at home, you can help your child put their foot on the first rung of the coding ladder. There are a host of wonderful apps out there for all ages. We’ve been trialing a few with my five year old with great success. Here are some highly regarded apps to help start your family’s coding journey!

Behind the Blog Adventure, Baby! Christine Knight is a writer, editor and marketing strategist. Her blog, Adventure, Baby!, is a guide to navigating the world and parenthood. We asked Christine a few questions about blogging, life and travelling with kids. 1. Tell us a bit about your blog

me the most, sometimes my husband, and then other times my blog and writing needs to be focussed on. So I look at a longer term balance that needs to be managed rather than trying to give everything equal attention daily. 4. What has been your biggest blogging achievement?

Adventure, Baby! is about navigating the world and parenthood. My blog covers family-friendly travel, where to eat with kids and parenting articles. I also write about life with a very energetic preschooler - the good and bad and places to enjoy a bit of kid-free time (high teas are my favourite indulgence).

Really connecting with people and getting comments from readers thanking me for writing articles that they can relate to. Writing has an amazing way of connecting people through shared experiences.

2. When you aren’t blogging, what are you doing?

I find writing to be a cathartic experience. I’m a bit of an introvert and don’t like talking about my internal struggles out loud - blogging is a way for me to express how I’m feeling, as well as being a means to document my life. I hope that my daughter looks back over the blog when she’s older and sees the immense love that her father and I have for her and for each other.

Exploring Sydney (and the world!) with my three-yearold and husband. I love eating out (particularly cake and gelato), seeing live shows (especially ballet), and going to museums and art galleries. I also love dancing and yoga. 3. How do you manage the balance between being a mum, blogger, wife? Poorly. When one area of my life is going fantastically well, one of the other areas is often suffering. I think the balance constantly swings and that’s absolutely fine, as long as everything gets a turn to be the most important element when it needs to be. Sometimes my child needs

kidmagazine.com.au 20

5. Why do you love blogging?

6. What advice would you give other mums thinking of starting a blog? Just do it. It doesn’t have to be fancy or look professional. A blog, first and foremost, is a way to record your feelings and experiences, so just get words down, and press publish.

7. What is next for your blog? I’m branching out into other kinds of content, like my new “parenting around the world” series. I also have lots of overseas travel coming up, which should lead to some great articles on the blog. 8. What is your favourite quote/mantra? “Comparison is the thief of joy.” 9. What tips do you have for travelling with kids? Firstly, be realistic about what you want to achieve. Travel with kids is hard and tiring, and for it to be enjoyable, I believe in planning to do less and see less than I would be trying to do without a child. Your itinerary should be moving at a slower rate, with the goal of doing one thing per day. I also take my child’s interests into account when planning what we’re going to be doing on our trips there’s no point dragging her along to places that I want to see if she’ll be bored. No one has a good time that way! I plan the logistics differently too, putting my child’s needs first where possible instead of choosing the cheapest/ fastest way to get somewhere. For example, I take day flights with my preschooler so her sleep schedule is less disrupted. When packing, I always bring more clothes than I think she’ll need. I also load up the iPad with new games and movies, and put together play packs with small new things to entertain in desperate moments - like colour books, stickers, figurines. And snacks. Lots of snacks. The other things I do where possible is splurge in places to make the trip more comfortable for us. I find it well worth the money to do things upgrade our hotel room to a one-bedroom suite so my husband and I can put our daughter to bed and then step into the living room to enjoy dinner and a bit of time together.

Ask the experts car seat concerns There is so much confusion out there when it comes to choosing the right type of car seat for your child. Height markers, tethers and Isofix are terms that we quickly need to learn as we dive head first into parenting and choosing the right car seat for our kids. We asked Sharyn Perry, Head of Marketing at Dorel Australia, a few questions to get her expert advice on all things car seats.

something a child should ‘grow into’, but needs to be height appropriate from the first day of use. Don’t change your car seat just because your child has reached a specific age. ALWAYS check the height markers because they determine when it’s time for a change.

1. From a manufacturers perspective, what do people need to be looking for when selecting a car seat?

Australia is the only country that has been testing seats on a rebound sled and use top tethers as part of the mandatory requirement, what this means is that Australian car seats are design to endure the highest crash forces in the world. The methodology has proven to be the safest so much so that the US and Europe have slowly adopted our testing methods and now incorporated height measurements and the use of top tether as they can see the safety benefits.

There are a few essential items on the checklist: · It might sound obvious, but bring your child and your car along. That way, you can easily check the height markers and all the other important considerations for choosing the right car seat. · Make sure the seat fits your car properly and can be easily installed · Can other car seats be fitted properly along with the new one? · Make sure you can easily and efficiently use the seat, that the harness is simple to adjust, and you can get your child in and out easily 2. If there is one thing you want people to know about car seats, what would it be? Simply, it’s height markers. Child car seats are divided into groups based on the height of the child. While age is certainly a factor, it is the height of your child that determines which car seat is most suitable. When your child’s shoulders reach the height markers, it means it’s time to change position of the car seat or upgrade the car seat. Don’t buy a child car seat that is too big – it’s not

3. How do the Australian standards for car seats differ to the rest of the world? Why is this a good thing?

4. What are the strangest things you have seen or heard in relation to car seats and car seat installation? [Laugh] we have heard some bizarre questions but it’s only natural for first time parents adapting to their new world of baby products. Like Albert Einstein, we encourage parents ask questions and believe there is no such thing as a dumb question. 5. Maxi-cosi had the first Isofix car seat to launch in Australia. Why was it so important to you to be at the forefront of bringing this to Australia? Maxi-cosi is a global brand and is a world leader in child restraint technology because of this it is very important to our brand promise to bring the latest technology to Australia.

Smart snacking for mums Melissa Lichocik, Healthful Mums

It’s natural for us mums to put our family’s need before our own, which can be detrimental to our own health. We all lead busy lives, whether we are a stayat-home mum or a mum that is in the workforce. One thing we all have in common is a lack of time. This lack of time often leads to snacking, not that snacks are a bad thing but mums tend to mindlessly snack without really thinking about what they are putting in their mouths. So here are some tips to help you snack smart. - Be prepared. If you are making the kids lunch box in the morning, why not make a small snack box for yourself? Fill it full of cut up fruit, vegetables, home made muffins, wholemeal banana bread, rice crackers, cheese, bliss bites etc. Have it handy so that if you feel the need to munch on something, it is easily accessible. - Avoid eating mindlessly. We have heard of eating mindfully, which is taking the time to enjoy your food and eating it slowly, but eating mindlessly is the opposite. How many times have you finished the last few bites of your kids plates or thrown a half eaten biscuit in your mouth because your toddler didn’t want it all and it was simply easier to eat it rather than find the nearest bin? Sound familiar? Most of the time you probably don’t even realize you are doing it and eating more food than you actually think. So make a conscious decision to leave the leftovers and refuse the half eaten biscuit.

kidmagazine.com.au 26

- Eat before you go. Going to a function or bbq and you know there will be treats galore there? Fill yourself up on some fruit and nuts before you go. This leaves you less tempted to sit mindlessly snack on chips and dips when you get there. - Think quality not quantity. Eating low-calorie foods will often leave you hungry a couple of hours later. Just because a pre-packaged food is labeled low-calorie, doesn’t mean it is better for you and they are often bulked up with added sugar and artificial preservatives. Focus on eating good quality, wholesome foods like whole-grains, good protein sources and essential fats. These will leave you satisfied and less likely to be reaching for an extra snack.

The way to a man’s heart Recipes from 4 Play by Mrs Turnbull

Ti Amo Pizza

Chicken Cordon Bleu

1 sheet shortcrust pastry 2 tablespoons pizza paste 1 tablespoon basil pesto ¾ cup grated 3-cheese mix 6 cherry tomatoes, halved 10 fresh basil leaves Preheat oven to 180˚C.

2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 2 slices Swiss cheese 2 slices ham 1⁄2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

Etch one large love heart from the pastry. Liberally swathe with paste and pesto. Promiscuously sprinkle with cheese and tomatoes. Season with sea salt and cracked pepper. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, until cooked and golden. Scatter with fresh basil leaves to serve.

kidmagazine.com.au 30

Preheat oven to 180C. Line a 20 x 30cm baking tray with baking paper. Pound chicken breasts to 1cm thickness. Season both sides with sea salt and cracked pepper. Lay one slice of cheese and ham atop each chicken breast. Roll chicken, tucking in ends and secure with a toothpick. Place on prepared baking tray and smother with breadcrumbs. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until cooked. Remove toothpicks, slice and serve immediately.

Tart 4 Two

Mad Passionate Explosive Cheese

200g Chocolate Ripple biscuits 5 tablespoons butter, melted 250g cream cheese, softened 400g condensed milk 10g sachet gelatine (agar flakes if you prefer) 50g milk chocolate

125g triple cream Brie 1⁄4 cup (60ml) Kahlua 1⁄4 cup (50g) brown sugar 1⁄4 cup pecans, chopped

In a blender, process the biscuits to create a fine meal. Transfer to a bowl and add the melted butter. Stir with passion to combine. Dominate the mixture, pressing it into the bottom of a lightly greased 20cm/9inch round cheesecake dish. Chill.

Gently slice the lid from the top of the soft cheese without removing.

Meanwhile, in a bowl beat the cream cheese with an electric beater until silky. Add the gloriously sticky condensed milk and beat. Dissolve the gelatine in 3 tablespoons of hot water, stirring vigorously, then fold into the mixture. Allow the creamy fusion to flow freely across the base. With the chocolate in pieces, place in a microwave proof bowl for 30-second intervals, stirring after each until smooth. Trickle over the top of the cheesecake and refrigerate for at least 4 hours to set. Dust with chocolate shavings or crumbled flake to serve.

kidmagazine.com.au 31

Preheat oven 180C.

Place the cheese with its lid, on a small tray and bake for 10 minutes (preferably on a baking paper lined tray). Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over medium heat, stir the Kahlua and sugar rendering a syruplike sauce. Bring this lusciousness to a kind boil. Add the pecans and cook for a further 2 minutes, until golden and bubbling. Remove the Brie from the oven, tenderly remove its lid and discard, transfer the wheel to a serving plate. Pour the alluring sauce over the top, so that it flows freely. Indulge immediately with crackers.

Mitsubishi Mirage LS CVT Juliet Potter, Autochic.com.au

Vital Stats Price: $14,990 - $16,490 Safety: ***** Eco-friendly: **** Economical: ***** Runs on: Petrol Parking: ***** Storage: *** Boot: Small Cup holders: 3 Comfort: *** The all-new Mitsubishi Mirage is one of Australia’s most affordable cars to run… and the great news is, it just got even cheaper! Style & drive The five-seat Mitsubishi Mirage is available in three spec levels, ES, ES Sport and LS, with the option of five-speed manual or CVT auto for all spec levels. Last year we test drove the top-spec LS CVT auto and found it to be a truly awesome little runabout car. It was compact, nimble and extremely fuel efficient. This year the price of the Mirage range has been reduced, with the LS coming down from $17,740 to $16,490. Bargain! For its price, the features on the LS are outstanding. It has keyless entry on the driver’s side and the boot, push button start, dusk-sensing headlights, rain-sensing wipers, climate-control air-conditioning, steering wheel controls, a CD player with USB/AUX/iPod compatability and Bluetooth with audio streaming.

kidmagazine.com.au 36

The interior of the car is simple and basic. We think the designers were going for “cool and groovy” with the twotone cream and grey design on the dash and doors, but it unfortunately just makes the interior look a little tacky. The cloth seats look solid and durable, and the rear bench seat is okay for short journeys but might get a tad cramped for adults on long journeys. There is a surprising amount of leg room both front and back. You can install a rear facing car seat, though the front passenger will mourn the loss of quite a lot of their leg room. Afull-sized pram will fit on the boot if you remove the hatch cover. (You might have to pop one wheel off the pram too depending on your brand of pram.) The car Drive.com.au voted Best City Car has a 1.2L three cylinder MIVEC engine that gives the base ES manual model a best-in-class fuel efficiency of 4.6L/100km and C02 emissions of 109g/km. The LS CVT isn’t far behind with fuel efficiency of 4.9L/100km and C02 emissions of 115g/km. The engine is a bit rough and ready, and it does have lawnmower tendencies, but it does its job with guts and gumption. The Mirage turns on a dime so parking is a breeze. Safety Although it might be small and light, the Mirage has a five-star ANCAP safety rating, and comes with six airbags, including front, front side, full-length curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag. Active safety systems include Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Active Stability Control (ASC), and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). The Mirage body uses Mitsubishi Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE)

design to provide outstanding passenger protection in the event of an accident. There are three car seat anchors in the rear bench seat, and ISOFIX car seat hooks on both outboard rear seats for easy car seat installation. Eco (Mirage LS CVT) Fuel consumption: 4.9L/100km CO2 emission: 115g/km Pricing Mirage ES 1.2L 5-speed Man - $12,990 Mirage ES 1.2L CVT Auto - $14,490 Mirage ES Sport 1.2L 5-speed Man - $13,990 Mirage ES Sport 1.2L CVT Auto - $15,490 Mirage LS 1.2L 5-speed Man - $14,990 Mirage LS 1.2L CVT Auto - $16,490 Describe the car in three words Cute, Compact, Affordable What are the best things about this car? The price. Hands down it’s amazing value for money! And the downsides? The engine is a bit rough and ready. What does it run on? Petrol. kidmagazine.com.au 37

Liked it? Yes! The Mirage is a perfect city car. Its fuel efficient, you can park it anywhere, and it has great features like keyless entry and key free start. If personified, who would this car be? Mila Kunis

END autochic.com.au is the most chic and sassy auto haven online today where women can learn, chat and buy a car without even leaving her house. It’s all about helping to make buying and owning a car a fair, stress-free and yes, even a fun experience!

statement necklace tutorial Get creative with this stunning statement necklace made from STAEDTLER FIMO oven hardened clay. You will need about an hour of “crafting time” (plus baking and drying time) to make this necklace. An beginner level project, you can also substitute black and white for brighter colours. STAEDTLER FIMO products are available from Eckersley’s Art & Craft, Lincraft, or other art and craft supply stores.

Materials 21g black STAEDTLER FIMO Soft 35g white STAEDTLER FIMO Soft 1 sheet STAEDTLER FIMO Silver Leaf Metal Jo Sonja’s Satin Varnish Paint brush 1m piece of 3mm black leather Instructions Cut three pieces of black FIMO soft each weighing 7g. Use a kitchen scale to check the weight. You will also need five pieces of white FIMO soft also weighting 7g.

Place the balls on the bamboo skewer sticks and arrange the sticks in your oven so the balls fit between the oven racks. Bake at 110°C for 30 minutes.

Work each piece of FIMO soft with your fingers until it is soft and malleable and then roll it into a ball (note: when working with the white FIMO soft ensure your hands are very clean).

Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Place the skewer sticks over a tea cup or bowl and gently cover with a layer of varnish. Leave over night to dry. This will give the balls a shinier look and also helps to hold down any loose pieces of the leaf metal.

Use a bamboo skewer to pierce a hole through the balls. Once the ball is pierced it will likely need a bit of reshaping. Check that the leather will slide through the hole in the ball. If not, make the hole slightly larger.

Thread the balls onto the leather string.

Take three of the white balls and cover them in the FIMO Silver Leaf Metal (note: I used pieces of orange and yellow FIMO soft leftover from another project for the leaf metal covered balls). This is quite fiddly but it is best to break off a small piece and gently roll it around the ball.

Tie off at the end to your desired length.

prawn dumplings Makes 30 500g green prawns, peel and deveined 120g baby spinach leaves 1 clove garlic, peeled thumb size piece of ginger, skin removed 2 tbsp chives, roughly chopped 1 packet Gow Gee pastry salt reduced soy sauce to serve Place a steamer over a saucepan of water and bring to the boil. Blanch the baby spinach leaves by placing them in a bowl and cover with boiling water for one minute. Remove from the water and drain. Add the prawns, spinach, garlic, ginger and chives into the bowl of a food processor. Mix until combined. Working one at a time, place a teaspoon of the prawn mixture into a Gow Gee pastry. Bring the sides up to meet in the middle and pinch so they stay in place. This can be quite a fiddly activity but the dumplings don’t need to look perfect! Once all the dumplings have been assembled, place them in a single layer in the steamer. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the mixture is cooked through and the pastry has softened. Serve with soy sauce as an entrÊe or with steamed green beans and Chinese broccoli as a heartier meal.
