T

he old Confucius saying of “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” has been ringing in my eyes the last few weeks. It has been full on but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

The week that Kid Magazine is published is always a crazy one. I’m such a last minute woman and so I end up pulling the design together in a few days. But this time around, the Kids Instyle show fell last Sunday, right in the middle of my busiest week. So I was up at 4am on Sunday to catch a flight down to Melbourne, spent an amazing day chatting to lots of my favourite people in the kids industry and then on a flight back home at 9pm. It was a long, long day! As I was putting the finishing touches on this issue today, I was reflecting on how much I enjoy what I do and connecting with you, my readers, through email, on the blog and on social media. It means so much to me to know that what I am doing is making a difference to people. Because it is a lot of work to do if no one is listening! That’s why my nomination for the Ausmumpreneur Influencer Award is so special. I’m nominated amongst a group of amazing bloggers and digital women who do fabulous things every day. It is an honour to be amongst them. It’s enough for me to love my job but boy it’s nice to get some recognition. Until next issue, you can find us at www.kidmagazine.com.au for more of the things you love.

why you should ditch your maternity clothes when baby is born Laila Fernandez, Laila & Spot

As a pregnant mum, you would have enjoyed shopping for a new wardrobe. The new curves and your new body shape, proud to show off the exciting news of a new baby on its way. Maternity clothes are designed to do just that and cater for a growing baby, a growing bump. But once your beautiful baby is born, do those designs still suit your needs as a new mum? After my first child was born, I quickly discovered the needs of post pregnancy clothing were quite different from that of pre-pregnancy or pregnancy. My body shape had changed and suddenly there was this little person that came with their whole set of wants and needs from me! I still wanted to maintain a sense of style, but also needed to feed my little boy and had to make sure my clothes allowed for that. Going out, I had to juggle holding a baby and fiddling around looking for keys, wipes and my phone. And I had never imagined how it was possible to get spewed on so many times a day! Post baby, you find things that become important in clothing quickly change. Here are a few reasons you might want to put your maternity wardrobe away and look at clothing designed for just for you as a new mum. 1. Most maternity styles are made from a stretch fabric and designed to hug your bump. While we are often happy to show off a pregnant belly, we are all a little more conscious of the changes to our body once baby is born. What a lot of new mums don’t realise is that the bump doesn’t just disappear. It can take several months (or

facebook.com/lailaandspot

even longer as in my case!) to go back to pre-pregnancy size. Instead of figure hugging styles, look for clothing designed to flatter your post baby shape, such as longer length singlets, a gentle drape over the hips or even ruching around the tummy can all be great. 2. If you choose to breastfeed, choose clothes that are specifically designed for breastfeeding. A lot of maternity styles simply incorporate ‘boob access’ which may look like a great option when you are pregnant, but does not do the job as well as you would like. Here are the things you need to consider – how easy is it to move the fabric aside, unclip your bra and get a hungry, screaming baby on? Tiny or complicated access can get frustrating so look for styles that have easy clip downs, allow for quick access and less fiddling around. If you can find designs that allow for one handed manoeuvres, even better! 3. Maternity clothes are designed to stretch, stretch and stretch some more. The fabrics can get quite worn and not hold its shape as well as when it was new and therefore not sit as great on your post baby body as you’d like. 4. As a new parent your 24 hour day is broken down into blocks of 3-4 hours which consists of feeding, changing, sleeping (if you are lucky!) and repeat. The concept of separate days and nights quickly become a thing of the past. New mums simply don’t have the luxury of several clothing changes a day, and you’ll often find yourself wearing the same clothes in the morning as that you slept in the night before. So it is important to find clothing

www

www.lailaandspot.com.au

that is designed to be worn day and night. Something that is comfortable enough to sleep in, but still looks great during day. Breathable fabrics such as bamboo, cotton or viscose are great as they ensure you stay comfortable for long periods of time. Fabrics with bamboo in them also help maintain your body temperature, which fluctuates a lot as your hormones are still settling down. 5. Maternity clothes don’t necessarily factor in what it is like to have a new baby in your arms, day in and day out. Look for features in clothes that make it easier for you to do just that. Like pockets. A feature so simple yet so important. With baby in hand, you need a convenient easy place to for your keys, wipes etc. Another important feature to look for in skirts, pants and leggings is how they sit with your post baby body. Your tummy area can be sore and uneasy for a while, so having tight or fitted waistbands can be uncomfortable, particularly if you have had a c-section. Choose clothes that are designed with this in mind and cater for that. After months and months of wearing maternity clothes, I couldn’t wait to get out of them and into something made for my new mum body. Becoming a new mum doesn’t mean you can’t still dress with style. Celebrate the new life you have created, celebrate your new body and choose the right designs that make you feel great!

SCHOOL MUMS SAVED MY SANITY Renée Harwood, Née Say Before our foray into formal education, school mums never factored in my plans for surviving parenthood. With an already supportive network of friends and family, I felt the schoolyard was a place for my kids to make friends, not me. I intended to be affable and courteous, of course, but could not envisage myself becoming BFFs with the lady in the black SUV behind me in the kiss and drop queue. Four tumultuous years of schooling (and life) later, I now realise how naïve and short-sighted I was. What an incredible resource I would have been missing out on. Sure, not everyone I pass at the school gate is a potential soul mate; whether you are big or small, there will always be schoolyard politics. However, please do not let that dissuade you from reaching out and finding the real gems among like-minded parents. They are there, I promise you. I discovered two such gems at a time of great need. When we relocated only one term into our middle son’s first year of schooling, he was understandably clingy and shy. Still grieving the loss of his preschool buddy, the prospect of meeting another bunch of classmates was nearly overwhelming. Fortunately he made a new mate quickly. I was equally fortunate to make the acquaintance of this friend’s mother. Not only did she help my son feel accepted, have him for playdates and encourage our boys’ friendship, she also extended her friendship to me, connecting me with a great network of school mums in the process. A similar scenario played out when I met the mother of my eldest child’s friend. Sensitive and kind, she immediately took our family under her wing and included me in her social circle. So, there we were, in a new town and thanks to just two women, my family had an almost instantaneous social network. We were invited to BBQs, met up at the beach and joined in neighbourhood events. For the first time we felt part of a community. But it isn’t until life throws you a

facebook.com/NeeSayer

curve ball that you very quickly find out how wonderful community can be. In June 2014, my husband was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The dust had barely settled on the moving boxes yet here we were, facing life’s next hurdle. We had three children under eight, a new mortgage and a cancer to fight. Of course, our existing support network rallied around. Family helped care for the kids when they could, old friends visited from far and wide. A dear friend even sent a week’s worth of groceries and pre-made meals. All of this support was so very gratefully received. However, the support I hadn’t counted on was the daily check-in at the school gate. The morale boost encouraging me to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Having someone on speed dial to occupy the kids after school if we were running late from a medical appointment. Weekend playdates to keep life as normal and enjoyable for the kids as possible. All of this happened thanks to my beloved network of school mums. These days life is slightly less chaotic for us and I try to pay it forward as much as I can. Whether it’s passing on baby clothes, giving a hand with the school run or keeping an eye on other kids at school events, I will do whatever I can to help out my school mum friends. After all, I know they would do the same for me.

MAKING TIME FOR MUM TIME OUT Sara Keli, Kid Magazine

If motherhood was a role being offered in a corporate organisation, Fair Work Australia would surely be called in to shut that company down. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. No annual leave. No pay - the reward is love. Often putrid working conditions. No training - learn on the job without guidance. Actually who in their right mind would apply for that job? But here we all are. Thrust into motherhood from the second we hold our bundles of joy in our arms and give our hearts over to them forever. For the first 18 months of my motherhood journey, the longest period of time I spent away from Olivia was about 8 hours. Her days at daycare or time spent at her grandparents or trips out with hubby. I didn’t have a single night off and it started to wear me down. I was tired, emotional and in a rut. And then I was invited to spend a night at Solar Springs Health Retreat in Bundanoon in the NSW Southern Highlands as their guest. It was the chance for a reprieve. A time out from the constant demands of motherhood. I barely needed a second to think about it. At Solar Springs I was treated to a facial, a queen size bed all to myself, divine meals cooked by a hatted chef, a morning stretch class, a naturopath consultation, meditation and the chance to sit, reflect and make the most of my 36 hours away.

facebook.com/kidmagazine

It was during the time for reflection that I realised the importance of taking time out for yourself as a mum. One of the biggest complaints you hear from mums is that they have lost themselves in motherhood. They have become so defined by their children and all that being a mum entails, that they no longer know who they are as a woman. But we are women before we are mothers. One of my favourite quotes is from spiritual leader Bhagwan Shree Ranjeesh, “The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed but, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.” And yet, even though we become mothers we don’t cease to become women. We still have needs and wants and passions and loves. And it is my belief that if we don’t take time out for these, we will start to lose the identity that we once held so dear. At the end of the day you need to remember that looking after yourself is a vital part of being a mum. You can’t look after your kids if you have fallen down, broken in a heap. Take the time out for yourself and nurture the woman who is the mother. I know that this is easier said than done. It is easy enough to say “I will make a trip to a health retreat once a year” while you are at a health retreat and then return to normal life and realise three years later that you haven’t been back. So how do you make it easy to take time out?

instagram.com/kidmagazineau

www

www.kidmagazine.com.au

KNOW YOURSELF There is no point going on a health retreat if the idea of exercise and quiet time send chills up you spine. Know what it is that relaxes you and stick with that. It could be running marathons so you train and book in to attend a few marathons around the country each year or you could find a creative outlet that gets you inspired. At Solar Springs we had the opportunity to go on a bush walk. I knew it would be beautiful but I needed some time to wander by myself and quietly reflect so that is what I did.

DITCH THE GUILT Will your kids miss you if you go away for a few days (or a few weeks?!?)? Yes! Of course they will and you will miss them. But you will leave them in good hands and you will come back more refreshed, happy and ready to take on the next set of challenges. Don’t feel guilty about doing something for yourself, enjoy the moment and know that you will be home soon.

SCHEDULE IT Just as you schedule your kid’s appointments, school camps, business meetings, build time out into your calendar. It could be a day every month or two or circling some dates 12 months in advance that you want to go away for a few days.

SET RULES If you have a partner, sit down and set some rules about taking time out. If one partner is taking more time than another you can start to feel resentful so make sure you are giving each other that time (and make sure there is some time for the two of you together!). If you don’t have a partner, set rules for yourself and work towards setting up supports so you can stick to them. Make sure your kids are also aware of the “rules” and why they are important.

MAKE IT A HABIT Taking time out for yourself is about more than days or weeks away. It is also about the daily rituals you have for self care. I think every mum should have a “mummy sanctuary”. A space in her home where she is able to do whatever it is that relaxes her. For me it is a chair in my bedroom. I like to sit and unwind for five minutes each night after I have had a shower. My family know that this is my ritual and (mostly) I get that time. It is only a short while but it makes a big difference in my day.

top 5 parenting tips for the digital classroom Marie Cullen, LessonBuzz

Multi-sensory technology is transforming education, making way for a new generation of online and mobile learners. This shift in traditional learning is perhaps most evident with the recent introduction of app-led learning in the classroom. Apps on the iPad are a systematic and structured way to introduce technology to children, and are a powerful outlet for education. Not only do they promote positive experiences and learning outcomes, they also provide a portable learning tool that allows children to navigate and use independently to develop their tech-savvy abilities and engage in self-motivated learning. As a long-time teacher and App Creator, I was inspired to create LessonBuzz, in response to a lack of quality educational apps for children aged 4-13 years old. Through my experiences in the classroom, I recognised the many advantages of digital and app-based learning, as a more creative and accessible way to engage children. As new technology such as mobile apps are fast becoming an integral part of interactive learning for children, it is important for parents to feel comfortable and confident in this new age of education. Here I offer my top 5 tips to help children and parents alike navigate the digital classroom for a positive online learning environment.

kidmagazine.com.au 34

1. Is this app suitable for my child? Apps are a convenient way to use the power of technology at school and at home. A successful app should provide an engaging, fun way to learn, but also measure improvements and deliver high-quality content. The suitability and age-appropriateness of an app is important for parents to consider. Apple apps make it easy for parents, as they carry an age-appropriate rating so you can have confidence the app is suitable for your child. In order to appeal to preschool aged children, it is important that the technology incorporates interactive elements such as voice instructions, colourful illustrations and drag and drop functions. By engaging multiple senses in fun tactile interactions, children are given opportunities for success and growth. 2. Quality content There are so many educational apps available that the choices are endless and it can be difficult to select an app that contains quality educational content. It is important that parents select apps that have been tailored to address particular learning outcomes.

Do some research into the app to ensure it aligns with the skills your child is learning at school before encouraging them to use it. If apps mirror the content being learnt in the classroom, they can be used to reinforce learning at home, and also as a mechanism to work through any learning difficulties with a fun, interactive approach. If you’re still unsure about the app, my advice is to reach out to a teacher for an expert opinion. 3. Online help groups and forums My recommendation is for parents to seek out genuine online groups created by parents and teachers, where education and positive parenting ideas are paramount. It is about finding quality, rather than quantity, to give support to learning. Online forums provide great tips and creative ideas that have worked successfully with other children. Parents should feel confident following some tried-and-tested materials.

Online forums provide great tips and creative ideas that have worked successfully with other children. Parents should feel confident following some tried-and-tested materials. facebook.com/lessonbuzz

4. The World Wide Web The internet provides a wealth of useful educational resources, but amongst those resources are many distracting and potentially damaging websites. Everything imaginable can be easily accessed on the internet by children. My advice to parents is to create a space in the family room so you can maintain a watchful eye on what children are accessing online. Websites such as Funbrain.com and Starfall.com are good sites for children to engage with learning. Make sure your children are not wasting time and energy on online games and websites that do not provide quality educational experiences. 5. Parental guidance It is all about maintaining a positive balance. I would recommend that parents manage their child’s use of technology so they keep a balance between screen play and active play. Apps and technology that promote learning and values are great choices to complement the school and social aspects of your child’s life. To break up time spent learning on educational apps, it is always a great idea to participate in some type of physical exercise, which also keeps the brain active. For more expert tips from Marie Cullen check out the LessonBuzz website or Facebook page.

bath time memories Sara Keli, Kid Magazine

The first time I bathed my daughter is a memory I will hold with me forever. I recall joining a group of other new parents in the nursery at the hospital as one of the midwives guided us through the art form of bath time. I was still coming to terms with holding my baby, let alone clinging on to her slippery, slimy body in a tub of water. Once we returned home, hubby and I would bathe Olivia together, neither one of us trusting ourselves enough to do it alone. But over time, as our confidence grew, our daily bath time developed its own character. I will admit that in our house bath time has become daddy’s job. I love hearing my two loves laughing away in the bathroom as I tidy up after dinner. It is such a special time for father/daughter bonding. Occasionally I am invited into the inner circle of bath time to see a new skill that Olivia has developed or, more likely, because hubby has forgotten the towel. But even though I am not the “bath time parent” I still have some amazing memories of bath time in our house. The dreaded first (and so far last) poo in the bath; the time when my mum was on bath time duty and Olivia came out with her first real belly laugh; and playing peekaboo with the towel on the change table after the bath is over. Bath time is something we all experience and all have memories of. It is a routine part of the day but one that we all look back on fondly. Personally from my own childhood, I remember the bubble bikinis my sister and I would “wear” in the bath, the time my sister cut open

facebook.com/kidmagazine

her eyebrow on the tap and the time we threw our poor cat in the bath to see what would happen. Bath time is just something we do but it is so integral to our learning, development and sensory experiences. Earlier this year I heard Scott Baudry, Director, R&D Baby Care Asia-Pacific at Johnson & Johnson talking about the importance of bath time. One of the first things Baudry said in his presentation really stuck with me. He said that bath time is the one time of the day when we are guaranteed to give baby our full attention. No mobile phones, no distractions. What was also really interesting for me was the role that scents at bath time play in creating experiences that stick in out memory. Baudry says, “ Through neuroscience, scientific study of the brain, we know that when a scent is experienced it immediately activates both the memory and emotion centres of the brain. This is likely due to the fact that these centres are located very close to each other within the brain. When initially smelled, a message is sent to the brain, which creates an “image” in the brain that captures not only the memory of the moment but also the emotion of the moment. The stronger the emotion the stronger the memory. We can often experience this memory association when we smell a “comfort” food or baby care product from our childhood when we being cared for by a loved one – we can instantly be transported emotionally back to the feeling of comfort, care, and love.”

Therapy Baby Sleep Balm, $12.95 www.thearomatherapycompany.co.nz

I am fascinated by the power of bath time. If you have an unsettled baby, one of the things professionals recommend you do is to run a bath for baby. And it works, most of the time… At bath time we have taught my daughter to splash; to make animal noises; the difference between hot and cold; the importance of hygiene; we have laughed and made up stories; sat and quietly watched as she plays and engaged with her giving her our full attention. So tonight when you are giving your kids a bath, think about the memories you are creating. Enjoy the attention you give them and the attention they give you in return. Introduce a scent to bath time, teach them something or just sit and play. After all these are the memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.

BEHIND THE BLOG The Kid Bucket List Leah Smileski is a mum of two, wife, Assistant Principal, lover of travel and the woman behind The Kid Bucket List. Fresh from her announcement as a finalist in the Kidspot Voices of 2015 awards, Leah took us behind the scenes of The Kid Bucket List for a glimpse at her life and blog. Tell us a bit about your blog The Kid Bucket List is a family adventure blog. Each week our family of four share our latest adventures around Sydney, different parts of Australia and overseas. We fit everything we do around full time work and school, so we like to think that other families could easily replicate what we do on the weekend or their annual holidays. When you aren’t blogging, what are you doing? When I’m not writing posts for the Kid Bucket List or out and about with the kids, I’m most likely at work. I work full time as an Assistant Principal in a specialized school setting here in Sydney. Teaching is my other passion and it fits perfectly with family life – although my own children keep telling me to stop using my ‘teaching voice’ at home. How do you manage the balance between being a mum, blogger, wife? Being passionate about all three roles makes things easy. Being a mum and wife always comes before the blog, but luckily our adventures all make for great blog posts! kidmagazine.com.au 44

My husband and I are totally immersed in family life from the moment we get home from work until the kids go to sleep and then for most of the weekend. We figure it won’t be long before our children hit the teenage years and prefer the company of their friends to us. We’re living it up while we can! When you become a parent, your relationship with your partner undergoes a change of gear. We plan regular ‘date nights’ to reconnect and ensure dedicated ‘us’ time is enjoyed. Then there is the Kid Bucket List. There are days when I don’t get started on my blog writing until after 9.00 pm so I’ve learned to develop a rough schedule for my posts and not to over extend myself. A tired mum doesn’t make for a fun mum!

What has been your biggest blogging achievement? I recently became a finalist in the Kidspot Voices of 2015 awards. I was extremely excited by this achievement as I attended the 2014 announcement as a guest of another blog and was inspired to develop the Kid Bucket List as a result. Second to this was receiving my first ever comment on the Kid Bucket List which wasn’t from my aunt or my mum! Knowing I was connecting with other parents wanting to travel was very exciting. Why do you love blogging? Connection and identifying my own tribe! Writing for the Kid Bucket List has allowed me to connect with lots of other families who love to travel too, providing me with lots of hints and tricks to further our game. It’s quite fullfiling to know my interests are shared by others who are just as passionate. What advice would you give other mums thinking of starting a blog? Network! Join a few dedicated blogging groups on facebook and read through the helpful hints you will find

in the threads. The blogging community is very strong and most love helping new bloggers. I also recommend going self-hosted as soon as you can. I didn’t do this until February this year and I realize now how much easier things would have been if I had done it earlier. What impact has blogging had on your life? I’m not really sure what impact the Kid Bucket List has had on our lives quite yet. It hasn’t provided a new income stream as I’m reluctant to add advertising or affiliates to our page quite yet, and we self fund most of our travels. What it has done is provide us an avenue for sharing our adventures and encouraging our friends and family to travel a little more, even if it’s just to explore their closest city. Discovering that other families turn to the Kid Bucket List for inspiration is exciting. What is next for your blog? The Kid Bucket List is all about documenting our adventures so no doubt, more are being planned! I also have plans to introduce some free printables for families to download to help develop their own Kid Bucket List. But more of that soon…. What is your favourite quote/mantra? Believe it or not, one of my favourite quotes isn’t actually travel related. It’s by Confucious who said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I strongly believe in following your passions across all aspects of your life which will enrich your experience as a result. Family, teaching, travel – are my three passions and immersing myself in all three makes me quite content. What are your top tips for travelling with kids? When travelling with kids, expect the unexpected and be flexible. Remember that a jam packed day full of different places to see and activities to immerse the family in will probably spell disaster. Travelling with kids is most successful when you take things slowly and allow for down time. If you have young children, invest in an Ergobaby carrier, and always, always carry snacks, water, a few envelopes of stickers and a pack of pencils.

THE THREE STEP PROCESS TO HOME-MADE STRAWBERRY JAM Rebecca Sullivan, Preserving Ambassador

In this day and age, most children’s snacks are loaded with preservatives and added sugar to make them taste sweeter and last longer. For mums who want to give their kids a healthier treat and save some money at the same time, preserving your own foods is an excellent alternative! Preserving your food actually helps to retain all of its freshness and nutrients for up to one year, without having to add any nasty extras! It’s also a delicious way to make use of any leftover fruits in your pantry. Rather than throwing out rotten fruits (and along with it hard-earned money) why not make a tasty jam you can whip out anytime in the year to impress. Rebecca Sullivan is a preserving ambassador who together with Jarden Home Brands makers of Ball® brand home preserving products are working to re-introduce the age-old skill to Australian kitchens. Rebecca is a selftaught cook and has worked with some of the world’s best producers, environmental academics, activists, chefs and restaurants. As an eco-agronomist, activist, food writer, urban farmer and entrepreneur, Rebecca has also worked on many a project any food lover would envy.

Ingredients 1-1 1/3 cups crushed strawberries 30 ml pectin 250 ml granulated sugar ¼ tablespoon of butter (optional) 1 glass preserving jar 1 waterbath preserving pot or stockpot Method Stir pectin and butter together with crushed strawberries in a large saucepan. Bring the mixture to a full rolling boil that cannot be stirred down. Add granulated sugar to the mix and stir until it has dissolved. Once the mixture has returned to a full rolling boil, allow it to boil for 1 minute while stirring. Ladle the mixture into hot jars. Make sure to press the mixture against the jar walls to remove any air bubbles, and leave about 0.5cm headspace from the jar rim. Wipe any food from the jar rim before screwing the lid in place until it is ‘fingertip tight’. Place jars into simmering water, then cover the lid and heat to a steady boil. Continue boiling for 10 minutes, before removing the pot lid. Allow jars to stand for 5 minutes before removing them.

SPRING TIME DECLUTTERING Amanda Lecaude, Organising You September is a really special month for me as both of my children were born and I remember the joy of the blossom trees blooming. The sun shines more, gardens look more colorful and there is a feeling that a fresh start is upon us. It is a good time to open the windows, wash them, clear the winter clutter and tackle some spring cleaning. So where do I start you might ask and this is often where most people can get themselves stuck as they really are not sure and then don’t actually begin to do anything at all. My advice when I am asked this question is that it doesn’t really matter where you start but to just start. I also suggest not to try and do it all in one go but begin with something small and build on it over the time you have available. Recently I was speaking to a client who I assisted some time ago with organising her children’s toy room and she is now beginning to feel overwhelmed again with other spaces in her home. We discussed that taking a small step, by cleaning out even just one box when she has time, is putting her on that getting organised journey. Whilst it might take time doing small bits at a time, if you keep persisting, keeping the end goal in mind you can achieve it! Think of the satisfaction when you do! Often I suggest a good place to start is with the kitchen junk drawer as an example rather than thinking about tackling the whole kitchen. If you get through with the drawer and still have time then move to another drawer, cupboard or even the panty. The last think you want is

to get half way through and find you have run out of time and everything is everywhere! Or another idea is to pick one room and start there rather than end up starting in a variety of different spaces and then finding you are in a bigger mess than when you started! So here are 5 easy steps for you to start to get yourself organised and they can be used on any space in your house whether it be a drawer, shelf or whole room: Have a vision for how you want the space to look, feel and function. Make sure you visualise it and its also a great idea to take a before photo too. Clear and clean the space – you will be amazed by starting with a clean slate and how it allows you time to get inspired to use the space differently or even better. Sort and purge the items in that space – ask yourself as you are sorting through the items in that space: Do you really need it? Is this something I use regularly? If not is it something I really love or like? Am I saving this just in case? Do I have multiples of the same thing? Could I use this space for something else? By asking these questions it will enable you to make decisions on what items to keep and what items to recycle, pass to others or throw out. When sorting items it is also useful to group like items together rather than having them in all different spaces in your home. One of my clients had recycle shopping bags in most rooms of the house and was horrified to find she had several hundred when we put them together in once place – naturally we recycled many of them as who needs that many! Assign, store, label or find a home – allocate the items you have decided to keep an assigned space to live. Ensure you chose a storage solution that best allows easy access and takes up the least amount of space. Celebrate – stand back and admire your efforts! Now take that after photo and compare the two images and see what you have achieved. Enjoy the clarity of mind as well as your enhanced physical space. So what space are you going to start with this spring? Remember to have your vision and when the going might get a bit tough remember what the end goal you are working towards is. kidmagazine.com.au 51

PIGMENTATION IN PREGANCY Dr Jodie Silleri, Cosmetic Physician and GP Pregnancy is a unique time full of new experiences when the body undergoes an amazing series of changes to be able to give new life. Sometimes, however, some of these changes can be problematic. As a result of the cocktail of hormones floating around the body during pregnancy, pigmentation of the skin is not uncommon. According to well-renown specialist dermatologist Dr. Michael Rich, President of the Victorian Skin and Cancer Foundation, pigmentation in pregnancy is linked to the rise in a woman’s oestrogen levels. “Physiological increases in pigmentation occur in all pregnant ladies”, he explains. “It is most apparent in a line down the centre of abdomen, called linea nigra, around the nipples and areolae, and around the genitalia and perineum.” It also occurs in places that are affected by the sun – “on the face, typically on the upper cheeks, above the eyebrows, and above the upper lip”, as Dr. Rich points out – because the body can respond to sunlight by making too much melanin, the tanning hormone that causes dark skin. More extreme cases are referred to as Melasma – something Bec Derrington experienced in her third pregnancy. “I had no form of pigmentation in my first two pregnancies, but in my third I had melasma, predominantly on my cheeks,” she says. Derrington further explains that “Despite using creams to try to fade it, the melasma is still present.” She says she has to be diligent in shielding her face from the sun all year around.

So is there a way of preventing pigmentation during pregnancy? “Because the changes are hormonal, there are not many preventative measures that can be taken,” explains Dr. Rich. “Avoiding the sun and being vigilant with sunscreen application can help to minimise the effect.” Your sunscreen of choice should contain a good UVA block, not just UVB, as UVA rays are more responsible for pigmentation changes than UVB. Sunscreen needs to be applied three to four times a day if possible. “Although this may seem difficult, a quick additional spray of sunscreen to the face is actually not that time consuming and is an important measure in preventing worsening or rebound melasma.” Interestingly, mineral make-up can act as a physical barrier to UV exposure as well, so although you may prefer a bare faced look, in the case of melasma we encourage application of make-up. For women who have developed melasma, strict sun avoidance is recommended. A hat and sunglasses will minimise exposure to the sun and should be worn at all times possible when outdoors. Looking at to the longer term, Dr. Rich says that “While the darker patches will stick around for some women, it often starts to fade a few months after pregnancy. Melasma, however may remain.” Because the prominence of melasma can also increase with use of the oral contraceptive pill, Dr. Rich recommends that women look at non-hormonal methods of contraception or consider the progesterone-

only pill, known as the mini pill, or other progesteroneonly measures, such as an IUD or implant. “Referral to a specialist dermatology clinic can be helpful,” says Dr. Rich. “A variety of treatments are available, which range from topical bleaching agents that can be applied at home, to glycolic acid peels applied in the clinic.” At a specialist clinic it is possible to obtain higher strength bleaching agents not available in over-the-counter fading creams at the chemist. Care is required in choosing the type and use of any bleaching agent, as there is potential for these to irritate the skin, which can actually drive more pigmentation (known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH). Vitamin B and vitamin C containing serums and creams can also be useful to lighten affected areas. There is even new evidence for oral medications to improve your pigmentation, but this should only be prescribed and monitored under specialist care. “Laser treatments can also be beneficial, but, as with bleaching products, care must be taken in selecting which laser treatments to use as any irritation of the skin can cause post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)”,

says Dr Rich. A low energy approach with regular laser treatments appears to give the best results and is really an essential part to managing melasma. Laser treatments not only target the pigment of melasma, they also treat the associated blood vessels that seem to worsen the condition. There is no doubt melasma is a difficult condition to treat. It can take many months or even years to improve. Control not cure is the aim and a combined approach is generally recommended. Ultimately the best and safest advice will come from your specialist dermatologist. Be wary of seeking substandard treatments from non medical operators, who, through lack of knowledge and cheap inadequate lasers, may exacerbate your melasma.
