MESSAGE

from the President and Executive Director

Anne Schultz President

2015 was a breakthrough year for kidney. Through new partnerships, sharing ideas, innovative thinking, and leadership, kidney was put in the spotlight. And kidney patients, their families, members, volunteers, donors and staff made it possible. The first breakthrough came in January when the Yukon was welcomed into our kidney family and we officially became the BC & Yukon Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Since then the north has seen a flurry of activity with Yukon volunteers increasing public awareness during March Drive, hosting a special “community welcome breakfast” with Yukon dignitaries, and our first Whitehorse Kidney Walk in October raising twice as much as everyone expected! And then last fall, Yukoners formed the Yukon Chapter—our most northern chapter. Our second breakthrough supported our five year campaign to increase the number of kidney transplants by 50% over five years. In May our first Kidney Transplant Summit was held with 400 participants joining us for a day of conversation and debates on issues that matter to kidney patients and their families. A more detailed summary of the Summit is included in this report; however, it was inspiring for us to be in a convention room filled with kidney patients, their families, nephrologists and medical researchers, the media and government officials, all focused on speaking with “one strong voice” for kidney.

Dr. Karen Philp Executive Director

In our report you will also read how we welcomed the announcement that in 2015 British Columbians would be able to register their organ donor wishes at any one of the 62 Service BC Centres outside of the lower mainland. To thank the government, Minister Amrik Virk was awarded our first Citizen Leadership Award in September 2015. And throughout September and October, kidney volunteers —including the intrepid Edna Humphreys from Kamloops— travelled thousands of miles to give staff at every one of the 62 Service BC Centres our Community Leadership Award. We personally had the pleasure of presenting an award to the Service BC staff in beautiful Atlin and received a very warm welcome. It was a truly community celebration as we enjoyed treats and talked to residents as they registered their organ donor wishes. Abo’e time we presented these awards, the number of British Columbians registered on the organ donor registry had increased by 10% since our campaign started! In September, we also kicked off the Mayors & Councils: Saving Lives Through Organ Donation campaign at the Union of BC Municipalities. And in October, our Employer & Employees: Saving Lives Through Organ Donation campaign was launched in Kelowna. We are asking employers to use their human resources policies to encourage employees to register—either yes or no—

on the official donor registry. Since September, more than 12 companies have signed onto our campaign, and in November, the BC Association of Chiefs of Police joined too! Our third breakthrough was the increase in financial support for kidney patients and their families. More kidney patients received Short Term Financial Assistance. Thanks to the generosity of donors, nearly $100,000 was provided in direct financial support to people when they really needed it.

Finally we made breakthroughs with the Indigenous community. More than 100 Elders were tested for kidney disease during the BC Elder’s Annual Conference in August 2015. Families affected by kidney disease invited us to host community conversations about the seriousness of kidney disease, the higher risk for Indigenous people, the challenges of dialysis, the links with diabetes and high blood pressure, the desire to use traditional medicines and as well, the importance of organ donation.

It is truly impressive what the kidney community has been able to accomplish together. Breakthroughs that were on the horizon became real in 2015. And our support for kidney patients continued. 20 kidney patients across northern BC received help to travel to Prince George for education on home dialysis therapies through our Northern Travel Program. Living Organ Donors benefited from our travel support for companions to help them after surgery. Kidney transplant recipients were assisted when we opened an affordable two bedroom suite near St. Paul’s Hospital for post-transplant recovery, and many more benefited by being able to stay in one of our other 5 Kidney Suites. And we sent 38 children with kidney disease to our week long Kidney Kids camp.

It is truly impressive what the kidney community has been able to accomplish together. Breakthroughs that were on the horizon became real in 2015. We have come a long way, but there are miles to go before we can rest. As Picasso once said, “everything you can imagine is real”, and we imagine a world where everyone with kidney disease gets what they need to live life to the fullest. Thank you for your unwavering and generous support. Working together, the future is bright.

KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CANADA / BC & YUKON BRANCH / ANNUAL REPORT 2015

One Strong Voice to Save Lives at First-Ever Kidney Transplant Summit:

A Breakthrough for our Kidney Community

95% of British Columbians say they support organ donation

It’s a fact that far too many kidney patients die from kidney disease. Well over 3,000 British Columbians are on dialysis and 50% of them will die before they get a kidney transplant. When we asked British Columbians how our Foundation could change this story, and increase kidney transplants by 50% before 2020, more than 2,500 of them recommended we bring the kidney community and experts together to discuss what the barriers are to saving lives through organ donation. They pointed out that 95% of British Columbians say they support organ donation but only 20% have actually registered on BC’s organ donor registry. Their question was why.

On May 1st 2015, the kidney community came together to help change this story. Over 400 kidney patients, family members, caregivers, volunteers, government policy makers, health care professionals, media and experts traveled from across Canada to the Vancouver Convention Centre for the Kidney Foundation’s first-ever Kidney Transplant Summit to emphasize the urgency for more organ donor registration and kidney transplants.

but only 20% have actually registered on BC’s organ donor registry

Setting the Stage: The Kidney Transplant Summit definitely created a buzz of excitement right from the get-go. Kidney Foundation volunteers greeted participants and guest speakers as they arrived at the Convention Centre, media and camera crew were busy setting up their equipment and preparing to tell our story—which by the way would later lead to some breakthrough coverage including being the lead story on the CTV evening news. Reporters from as far as Prince George and Quesnel came to hear and see what was going on at this Kidney Transplant Summit. Music energized the crowd…and everywhere you looked it was a sea of blue—kidney blue. Everyone sensed that something special was about to happen.

7

The First Act: The Summit opened with special performances by the Chinese Lion Dance with Ken Lee followed by powerful remarks from John and Lotte Davis, members of the Summit Advisory Committee. Elder Leonard George brought a traditional First Nations welcome and the Honourable Amrik Virk, Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services brought greetings from government.

“I commend The Kidney Foundation on the work that they do to improve the lives of those living with kidney disease and their work with organ transplantation,” says MLA for Surrey-Tynehead Amrik Virk. “Being an organ donor is offering a piece of yourself to save someone’s life—a huge positive for everyone involved, and something I hope more British Columbians sign up for.”

8

KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CANADA / BC & YUKON BRANCH / ANNUAL REPORT 2015

If someone hadn’t registered to be an organ donor, my transplant and all the positive things in my life since, would not have happened ”

Kidney Patients Speak Then the Summit was turned over to the people that need the transplant story changed for the better: kidney patients. And they spoke strongly. Kidney patients opened their hearts and shared their stories about what life is like on dialysis. They spoke eloquently about how dialysis lets them survive, but a kidney transplant would give them back their lives. Kidney transplant patients spoke about how grateful they feel for getting their quality of life back. Many thanked their donors for giving them their second chance at life. Living donors spoke about how honoured they felt to be able to give the gift of life.

“This was a very important day for kidney patients and their families. There was a lot of emotion and passion that day. But most of all, it felt like we had a voice and that kidney patients mattered.” Liz Hanuse, donated a kidney to her son Victor.

“I was overcome with emotion at the Summit,” says William Stewart, who is waiting for a kidney. “It was so inspiring to see hundreds of people from all over the province coming together to speak out for kidney patients on dialysis like me. For the first time in a long time I felt hope for a better future for me, my wife and my kids.”

9

A Breakthrough Day for Our Kidney Community

The Court in Session The second stage of the Summit was a debate amongst the experts in a court-room style set up. Leading nephrologists and transplant researchers spoke to the current state of kidney disease, kidney transplantation and organ donation in BC, including Dr. Adeera Levin, Executive Director, BC Provincial Renal Agency; Dr. Mark Meloche, Medical Director, Quality, BC Transplant; and Dr. David Landsberg, Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program for BC Transplant.

Dr. Adeera Levin

An eight-member Jury, chaired by the Hon. Wally Oppal QC, heard experts including Joel Solomon, Chair of Renewal Funds, Dr. Jag Gill, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, UBC, Dr. Evan Adams, Chief Medical Officer, First Nations Health Authority, Dr. Steven Beed, Health Director in Critical Care in Nova Scotia, Dr. Aviva Goldberg, Section Head of Pediatric Nephrology at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg carefully lay out evidence for and against three controversial topics:

Dr. Mark Meloche

Dr. David Landsberg

“Kidney disease is serious and until there is a cure, the best available therapy for a dialysis patient is a kidney transplant,” says Dr. David Landsberg.

• Should British Columbians automatically be considered organ donors when they die or not? • Should people be paid to be organ donors or to register as organ donors? • Is it a systematic or cultural barrier that results in low organ donation in Indigenous, Asian and South Asian communities?

From left: Dr. Evan Adams, Adrienne Charlie, Dr. Jag Gill

10

KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CANADA / BC & YUKON BRANCH / ANNUAL REPORT 2015

A Breakthrough Day for Our Kidney Community After hearing the evidence, the jury deliberated in private in an attempt to reach consensus on their response to the three questions based on the evidence provided. Kidney patients shared their experiences and stories while waiting eagerly for the jury’s decisions. The Kidney Transplant Summit Chair Wally Oppal presented the jury’s final recommendations to the crowd, and answered questions on the decisions on behalf of all jury members.

Jury Recommendations: • The jury rejected the idea of offering financial incentives to organ donors. Living organ donors are currently reimbursed for expenses incurred in donating an organ, but not for the kidney itself.

• Jurors stated that Asian, South Asian and Indigenous communities in BC are over-represented in kidney disease numbers and under-represented in kidney transplants. They flagged this as an area requiring more culturally appropriate and community-driven research to identify and solve cultural and systematic barriers.

“As a society, we do not condone the sale of organs,” said Kidney Transplant Summit Chair Wally Oppal.

• The jury recommended that British Columbia adopt presumed consent legislation, with the appropriate safeguards to ensure the family and individual’s wishes are respected, in order to increase the number of kidney transplants in the province.

11

A Breakthrough Day for Our Kidney Community Participants and speakers concluded their day with a very special reception, and everyone left feeling good about what we had accomplished together. Among other things, the Kidney Transplant Summit: 4 Put kidney patients in the spotlight and made it the lead story 4 Brought leading experts from across Canada together to debate the evidence on controversial issues 4 Gave patients a voice they had not had before 4 Generated a sense of urgency and demand for positive action 4 Established a solid foundation for the kidney community to speak with one voice

One Strong Voice Continues... After the Kidney Transplant Summit, 400 kidney advocates—inspired and energized—returned to their communities, to continue building awareness and educating others about the importance of registering as an organ donor. And their efforts were rewarded by seeing the provincial government respond positively to making it easier to register as an organ donor.

Kidney Foundation Volunteers Honour Service BC Staff with Special Award In the fall of 2015, Kidney Foundation volunteers visited 62 communities across BC from—Atlin to Kelowna to Courtenay to Cranbrook and everywhere in between—to thank Service BC staff for their support of organ donation by presenting a Foundation Community Leadership Award. Thanks to the leadership of The Honourable Amrik Virk, Minister for Technology, Innovation & Citizens’ Services and his team, British Columbians can now register as organ donors when they visit any one

of the 62 Service BC Centres. Since this change, more than 15,000 British Columbians have registered their wishes at one of the centres. The Kidney Foundation and its volunteers were pleased to acknowledge the government’s efforts to make organ donor registration easier for British Columbians: a key recommendation coming out of the Foundation’s community conversations with British Columbians.
