For the past three years the local charity has been encouraging parents and toddlers to experience a new kind of nursery school, completely outdoors. Children under the age of five come along to a two hour session where singing and playing can be heard through the autumn leaves. Mud pies are being mixed, woodland puppets tell stories and wisps of smoke from the camp fire add to the sensory mix. The children are deeply engaged with their play whilst parents are able to socialise and enjoy each other’s company. visit www.forestschoolsnpt.org.uk for information.

Swimathon Are you doing your part for Wales in the ‘Tape Your Ears for Merv’ campaign in aid of Marie Curie cancer care? Wales National Pool Swansea staff are! The campaign has been championed by Ruby Jemmer, grand-daughter of Wales’s rugby legend Mervyn Davies and keen swimmer at WNPS. So, whether it be in the spirit of rugby, swimming or charity, why don’t you do something to get involved? Tape up your ears Merv style, take a selfie and send it to the Evening Post! My children fight for my attention...

Competition between siblings is not uncommon within families, particularly when children are of a similar age. Sibling rivalry is a concern for almost all parents of two or more children and can very often be unavoidable. The most common cause of sibling competition is when one of the children feels they are getting unequal amounts of your attention, discipline or responsiveness. As each child is competing to define who they are as an individual, they try to identify their own talents and interests to show that they are just as equal or even different from their siblings. Each child is unique and special in their own individual way so even though it can become frustrating dealing with the competiveness of siblings, it is important to remember that each child has a personality of their own. Although they have been

raised and nurtured in the same way, they view the world through their own eyes and may see things very differently. Siblings can often fight for attention from you so one of the ways to overcome this is by being fair. Older and younger children may have different privileges due to their age, but if children understand that this inequality is because one child is older or has more responsibilities, they will see this as fair. Even if you do try to treat your children equally, there will still be times when they feel as if they’re not getting a fair share of attention. The good news is, that as children become more mature they will become to understand how they can share your attention and get along with one another and begin to develop mutual respect for one another. With all this aside, siblings are often a child’s first friend in life and they will continue to play a huge part in one another’s lives as they grow up. The strong, potentially lifelong bond that siblings often share, even after you are gone will always be something which will make the tears, tantrums and squabbles all the more worthwhile when you look back on this moment in time in many years to come. Would your Mum to Mumpreneur with Sarah child like to try roller hockey?

FUNSTERS

The Cobras are currently Swansea's only senior roller hockey team. We are made up with players from Swansea, Port Talbot and Bridgend and train in Cefn Hengoed Lesuire Centre on Monday nights from 8-9:30pm. Last year, the Cobras held a roller disco and hockey demo for Sports Relief which was a great success and so following this, we realised that there was a great possibility of getting more kids involved in the sport. We would like to reach out to children of all ages to come join us and get involved. It would be ideal if you can skate but if you can t, the team would be there to help, if you don't feel very confident. Benefits from playing roller hockey include teamwork, hard work and

dedication and we are always trying to learn new things to improve our game. If you would like to give it a try, we are looking to set up a trial session at Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre when we get enough interest. If your business would be interested in potentially offering any kind of financial help to purchase essential equipment please get in touch. Kit can be expensive so we're looking for funding and sponsors to enable us to purchase kit so kids from all backgrounds of life can give the sport a go. Would your school be interested in helping to promote roller hockey? We would be very happy to visit your school to talk more about the sport and raise the profile of roller hockey. If any schools are interested please get in touch. You can find us on facebook: Swansea Cobras roller hockey or email

Master Spelling Learning to spell can be very difficult. Time, patience and practice all help! There are many ways of practising spelling, however, what works for one person may not work for another. Many children rely heavily on the strategy of learning their weekly spellings as a list. Some children learn effectively in this way, but for many, this method is not enough. They often memorise words for the test and then forget them later on or struggle to learn the words in the first place. Most people find a multisensory method works best, i.e. using senses like eyes, ears, voice and hands. Look at the following learning styles and see if you recognise your own style or that best describes your child.

It is highly likely that the majority of children will exhibit some aspects of more than one learning style. However, if you feel that your child shows a particular learning style, try the activities in the appropriate section below. If no one style is obvious, try a few activities from each section and see which is most successful. Whichever methods you choose to use, make it as much FUN as possible. Try to use a variety of materials and activities. Children always learn best when they are enjoying themselves. If you would like us at Kip McGrath to assess your child’s spelling age then please call Claire on 01792 299996 to book an appointment.

Make the most of every second! THINGS THAT MOVE - An aeroplane, bus, train, bird, you could even go on a train ride or the bus! BIRD SPOTTING - A Robin, magpie, duck, seagull. You could take some bird seed to feed them (very cheap to buy) or make your own seed feeders with empty milk cartons to place outside your window. Toddlers are fab and it’s such a beautiful and busy age, It’s a wonderful stage full of exploration & discovery of the world around them as they take wonder in the simplest of things...splashing in puddles, finding worms, climbing into dens made under the kitchen table. A time of learning through play at a slow speed and boundless energies & bucket loads of curiosities in tow. But this all passes in the blink of an eye and before you know it you’re helping them into school clothes, loosening the grip on their hand and watching them as they adventure off into nursery school as you’re left wondering where those toddler years disappeared too. So here’s our easy guide on ways to slow down and make the most of those pre nursery toddler times with some easy activities and mini adventuring that will help you make the most of every second you spend together. By far the most important thing is to slow down, let them lead, get down to their level and try to see the world through their eyes. Take pleasure in the simplest of things and move at their pace... which quite often is excruciatingly slow & repetitive but will bring you the most rewards.

MINI ADVENTURING Outdoor hunts are great for turning a walk into an adventure! Make some easily identifiable lists of things to find, here’s some ideas.

BUGS - A worm, snail, spider, wood louse! Take a jar with you to put your bugs in, toddlers love filling things and will have fab fun filling it with twigs and grass... don’t forget to put a few holes in the top for your bugs to breath.

Visit ‘Family Days Tried & Tested’ on Facebook to check out the magical, frugal & fun activities that we’ll be getting up to!

RAINY DAY WALKING A puddle suit is a great investment, it means you can head out in the rain and jump, splash, wade and even sit in puddles and keep dry!

Take out some empty margarine tubs to use as sailboats in puddles or make boats with corks and elastic bands. If it’s windy you can take a carrier bag tied to a piece of string for some carrier bag kite flying. Searching for elastic bands that the postman has dropped is often fruitful.

MAKE DENS

An old sheet draped over the table can make for hours of fun, picnicking underneath in a den filled with cushions & a torch. But don’t stop there! Head out to the woods with your old sheets and a packet of pegs and make some outdoor dens. It really is that simple! All you need is time and the realisation that that time is played out in slow motion for a toddler and cherishing it is easy if slow down with them, after all you’ll soon be wondering how that time passed by so quickly and wishing you had a rewind or a pause button... Make the most of every second and forget about the school uniforms til the last minute.

In Ya Faith You can learn a line from a win and a book from a defeat. Although winning is not everything... it sure does feel nice to experience victory and success from time to time. Yet victory cannot bring to us the same wealth of knowledge found in defeat. And when we look to learn, grow, and become better than we were previously, we can obtain “books” of additional information more from a single defeat, perhaps even more than all of our victories combined. The majority of us tend to look at defeat as something terrible and perhaps even a permanent condition, it is not. It is absolutely ok to face defeat and failure in life, and doing so does not take away from who we are unless we allow it to. Still, it can be a difficult pill to swallow. And for me public speaking certainly keeps me in an organised and motivated mindset most of the time, which makes it harder to recognize the wealth of knowledge that can be found in defeat or getting it wrong. Yet

when I think of the times when I have learned the most about the weaknesses of my character, and about all the things I can improve at... my style of speaking, increasing my knowledge, wisdom, and conditioning, increased revelation and investing in people, and on and on. It was when I suffered a loss or got it drastically wrong. It was then that I went home and spent time thinking over what I did right, what I did wrong, and what I could do better. We will be faced with defeats in life, for not everything we experience can be a “win.” But if we keep a winner’s attitude, and learn and grow into something greater than we were yesterday, then we really have not lost after all.

Book Reviews Picture Book: Boa’s Bad Birthday Age: Preschool Author: Jeanne Willis Jeanne Willis has a gift for telling a great story in few words. The clear comic story line is perfectly complemented by Tony Ross’s fresh vibrant illustrations. Boa is a snake and he’s looking forward to his birthday. He can’t wait to open his presents – surely they’ll be the best ones yet. But oh dear! His animal friends are kind but their gifts are not a good match and Boa is disappointed. A piano from Orang Utan, a hairbrush from Sloth, mittens from Jaguar and a football from Anteater are not the most imaginative presents for a slithery smooth snake! Boa tries to look pleased. Then Dung Beetle turns up with another rubbish present – a pile of you know what but hold on – This present turns out to be fabulous after all. As the story unfolds there is a lovely description of Boa – no hair, no nose, no hands etc.! It’s an excellent way for young children to be able to compare the differences in animal characteristics with the snake. There’s a sweet and heartwarming twist at the end. A moral about thoughtfulness told effectively in a light hearted way. Novel: Stick Dog chases a pizza Age: 8+ Author & Illustrator: Tom Watson Publisher: Harper Collins Stick Dog and his band of marauding stray mutts are back for a third time on their never ending quest to find something tasty to eat. Whilst hunting for a Frisbee to play games

with, the hungry hounds accidently stumble upon a new delicacy – Pizza! A further search reveals an empty pizza box with the address of the Pizza Parlour on it. Once they arrive at where the supply is coming from, there is only one problem – how do they get their paws on it! After a few novel suggestions from Stick Dog’s canine crew such as aiming a dog catapult at the Pizza Parlour or inventing a special Pizza snatching machine Stick Dog comes up with an idea inspired by playing Frisbee! Tom Watson’s off beat narrative style presents the doggie perspective on the proceedings in a fresh and funny way. The gentle storyline is charmingly complemented by simple and quirky drawings. With Stick Dog leading the way, his team of Karen, Poo-Poo, Mutt and Stripes are all highly endearing characters. If you are usually a cat lover, this story might change your mind!

Prepare for a University Degree The BA Degree Preparation Programme in Humanities is a 10 week part-time course starting in April 2015 offered by the Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE) at Swansea University. It is aimed at adults who are considering studying at Higher Education level and provides an opportunity to refresh existing skills or gain new skills and subject knowledge. The programme is part-time and flexible and taught on the main Swansea University campus and in community centres in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire. All you have to do is choose two subjects from History, English Literature, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy and Media Studies and attend both classes for two hours a week for 10 weeks. The programme is free to eligible students as funding is available. Free, confidential and impartial educational advice and guidance is also available to prospective and current students to support you throughout your studies. Information Events and Taster Workshops are taking place during March at libraries and community venues where you can talk to a member of the team and find out more information.

Victoria Walters

I was a bit unsure when I started the BA Degree Preparation Programme last year as I questioned whether I was intelligent enough to go to university. But after attending the 10 week course last April, all of my fears were put aside and I really enjoyed myself. I met new friends and found out about new subjects and ideas. I was a little concerned about the two assignments I had to submit, but the help and support I received from the tutors was very good and I was determined to continue to the next level. Successfully completing the BA Degree Preparation Programme has been a really positive Page 27

experience for me and now as an undergraduate student studying at The Phoenix Centre and The Forge Fach Community Resource Centre in Clydach I am certainly looking forward to my degree studies over the next few years.

Emma Cooze

I studied at The Phoenix Centre and I really enjoyed the experience of returning to studying. The tutors were very enthusiastic and the lessons made me want to learn more about the subjects. I met lots of other students and they were all very friendly – we were like a family by the end of the 10 weeks! Returning to education gave me a totally new perspective. I was quite nervous at the start, but the support I received was fantastic. It was good to get my brain working again and it is nice to learn something new. It also sets a good example to my three young sons and when they see me doing my homework, it gives them the drive to do well at school. Now I am more than just “mum” but a fully fledged university student!

Sian Mainwaring

I decided to study sociology and psychology after attending an Information Event and a Taster Workshop in the community. I was nervous at the start, but the class was great and the help you get from the tutors is amazing. I am studying both classes in the day at the moment as it fits in well with schools hours – all four of my children (ages five years to 14 years) are still in full-time school. As well as gaining new skills and knowledge, being a Part-time Degree student has provided a focus for me and helped me gain in confidence and self belief, with the result that a whole new world of opportunities has opened up to me. Dr. Louise... Chickenpox Chickenpox is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It takes between 7 and 21 days (usually 1014 days) for the chickenpox illness to develop after coming in contact with an infected person. This is called the incubation period. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the symptoms and signs of chicken pox: fever, body aches and a headache often start a day or so before a rash appears. Spots start appearing in crops, which develop into small blisters and are itchy before scabbing over. Spots can be all over the body, including inside the mouth/ on genitals. Most children feel better after one week, but the spots can take two weeks to fade. A person with chickenpox is very infectious. The virus spreads in the air from person to person. A person is infectious approx. 48-72 hrs before spots appear, then until spots crust over which is usually 5-7 days from rash onset. People with chicken pox should not travel by air until all the spots are crusted over. Serious complications of chicken pox are rare. The most common is secondary bacterial infection of spots. In these cases, antibiotics in oral/cream form may be required. Chicken pox spots generally don’t cause scarring unless scratched excessively. Treatment aims to ease symptoms while the immune system tackles the infection. Paracetamol can be given to lower temperature & also helps with headache/body aches. Dress your child comfortably, so that they’re not cold or overheated. Give your child lots of fluids to drink to prevent dehydration. A sedating antihistamine (given at night) may help with sleep if itch is a problem. A soothing cream may ease the itch – Calamine lotion is the most popular. People with chickenpox should avoid contact with pregnant women in case they haven’t had chickenpox in the past. You should also avoid babies less than one month old, as well as people with weakened immune systems (those with leukaemia, receiving chemotherapy, on high-dose steroids, or those with HIV/AIDS) This is because chickenpox can be dangerous in these groups and have serious complications. People with heart and lung diseases are also in this at-risk group. Page 29

|

www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk

Most adults in the UK have had chickenpox as a child, and so are immune to it. However, chickenpox occurs in pregnancy in about 3 per 1000 women in the UK. If you have chicken pox when you are pregnant, you are likely to make a full recovery. However, the illness tends to be much more unpleasant than that seen in children, and serious complications occur in the woman and/ or her unborn baby in a small number of cases. Shingles in a pregnant woman doesn’t pose a risk to the unborn child. What should I do if I’m pregnant & I’ve been in contact with chickenpox/shingles? If you have had chickenpox, you are likely to be immune. You don’t need to worry, but you may want to discuss with your Midwife.

A person is infectious approx 48-72 hrs before spots appear... If you’re uncertain if you’ve had chicken pox then speak to your Midwife or GP urgently. You will need to have a blood test to check your antibodies to varicella zoster - i.e. a test to detect immunity to chickenpox. If you don’t have any antibodies, then you are at risk of developing chickenpox. Your GP will discuss with the hospital doctors about giving you an injection. The injection itself is not a vaccine & will not prevent infection, but it may weaken the effects of the virus should you contract it. What if I am pregnant (or within 7 days of giving birth) & I develop chicken pox? You need to consult your Midwife and GP as soon as the rash appears. You may be offered a tablet to reduce the severity and duration of the illness, and it may reduce the risk of complications in yourself and baby. To be of benefit it must be started within 24hrs of onset of the rash. If any of you have any handy hints on dealing with chicken pox in children – maybe some tips to help ease the itch – then let the readers of Kidscene know. If your child develops any unusual symptoms or you become concerned whilst they have chickenpox, contact your GP.

Mum to Mumpreneur Tell us about your business

My business is Joshua’s Kids Cuts and Barber Shop in Mumbles. The children’s shop is all about the kids. We spend time reassuring the young ones that haircuts are okay! We have everything we can think of to entertain them, from a good old custard cream...to dvd’s...books..toys... and playstations. We love to welcome new babies! Mum and Dad get to keep a lock of hair, take as many pictures and videos as they wish. We offer a full pamper session and parties for the girls with nails, glitter, tatoos and hair plaits etc. Every child leaves happy (mostly..lol!!) with a visit to the sweet shop, stickers and balloons, it’s a great treat. The barber shop has just had an amazing make over by Tamsin LeachGriffiths of No. 8 projects. We also do all the funky new looks for bigger kids, teens, Dads and Grandads!

Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business?

I used to work for a well known barbers shop. We were encouraged to not entertain any screaming babies who were terrified of haircuts and not to do little girls. I used to think ‘why turn away any trade when it is there for the taking’. After a few years of building up my own trade, i decided to make a go of it myself. I found a small unit in Castleton Walk Arcade, Mumbles. My Dad lent me some money to buy some equipment and off i went, the whole idea was a sports theme. I bought a second hand TV & video player to play sporting videos for the gents. I bought a Teletubbies video and that’s where it all began. I used to have a star book for the kids, then after getting ten stars they would earn a lucky bag. It became so popular that we could not keep it up! So i bought more videos, made my own stickers, bought toys and lots more to entertain them. Our reputation grew so much that we needed a bigger unit! I have been so lucky to have such amazing staff, all who make Joshua’s work We were there a few years until another bigger unit became available to separate the kids from the men. Page 33

How many children do you have - tell us a bit about your family and how you juggle childcare?

I have one little girl, Lili who is the light of my life, also a stepson David who is 20 and is in University in London. I met my husband 12 years ago and we have a lovely life, living in Mumbles. I love helping Mumbles traders and putting Mumbles on the map.

What do you do to relax?

I love cooking and entertaining and always look forward to family holiday time, which is now so difficult with Lili and school. I am not able to take time off during the school holidays, so thank goodness for Jigsaw Holiday Club in Mayals School! I now work part-time in the shop so that we can spend some quality time together. When she is in comprehensive, things will change but for now she is number one.

What’s been your biggest challenge in business and how have you overcome it?

The biggest challenge has been to continue keeping the shop interesting and enjoyable. I have been lucky with great staff, great customers and Mumbles is a great place to live, work and enjoy.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to other mums wanting to start their own business? I would encourage anyone thinking of a new venture. My advice would be to always start a business that is unique and that people need!
