Beautiful Rays Child Yoga and Meditation in Swansea Yoga for children is still a relatively new concept in Wales but the positive affects of practising this form of exercise to all ages are widely known. Yoga develops flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. It can also promote many mental and emotional aspects of wellbeing such as mindfulness, creativity and self confidence. Children who regularly practise yoga have been reported to be calmer, easier to settle to sleep and to find it easier to concentrate in school, as well as displaying the physical benefits such as improved posture. Rachel Neyland runs Beautiful Rays Child Yoga and Meditation classes in Swansea. She has been practising yoga since a young adult but it was not until after attending an inspiring workshop with the world famous Ana Forrest that she decided to train as a yoga teacher herself. Rachel says: “My career thus far had been teaching dance to children in schools and youth centres - - and I realised that what I loved about it most was its therapeutic affect it had on the children and how moments of creative freedom and physical expression changed the course of some of their lives. It was this feeling that inspired me to develop the idea of child yoga in my area.” Rachel’s dream is to one day see yoga

as a part of the school curriculum where it could reach all children. In Beautiful Rays yoga, it’s all about having fun. The routine is wrapped into an adventure where the children ride on camels, climb up mountains, find treasures and see many wonderful creatures on their way. Still, the best part for many of the little yogis is when they get to practise their headstands! Each class finishes with a meditative relaxation where the children lay under their blankets listening to an imagination tingling story. Rachel also teaches pregnancy yoga at Karmafitjuice and a range of yoga classes at the YMCA.

Crafty Projects!
Toilet roll Butterflies You will need: Brightly coloured card stock a toilet paper roll ribbon googly eyes a 1.5 inch flower punch and a 1/2 inch circle punch, or draw templates and glue. To create the base of the butterfly, I cut a piece of card stock into a 4.25 x 5.25 inch rectangles. Put adhesive along all the edges of the rectangles, plus a little in the middle of the card stock. Now roll the card stock onto the toilet paper roll, covering it. At this point you can also add your googly eyes. I think it’s fun for them to be different sizes. Next, cut two 3 inch strips of ribbon. I kept my butterfly all matching, the body, wing base and antennae all the same colour, but you don’t have to. After cutting the ribbon, tie a knot at one end of the ribbon, and stick the ribbon to the inside of the tube, as shown. Now we can work on the wings. Draw the wing pattern onto coloured card stock, and cut out. Now add in colourful punches using your flower and circle punches, cutting off any parts of the flowers that overlap the edge of the wings. To finish the butterfly, place adhesive along the middle of the wings, and stick to the back of the finished tube.

Teaching Children Values
As parents, it requires a lot of patience to teach children right from wrong, how to respect others, how to share and be fair, how to take responsibility and how to develop those inner values that constitute a person’s character. Some would say, that values are impossible to teach and it is certainly true that telling children to be more honest, diligent or considerate doesn’t work any better than telling adults to be. The way children learn values, simply put, is by observing what you do, and drawing conclusions about what you think is important in life. Regardless of what you consciously teach them, your children will emerge from childhood with clear views on what their parents really value, and with a well-developed value system of their own. Values not only shape our relationships but our behaviours, our choices, and our sense of who we are. The more positive our values, the more positive our actions become. By helping children develop positive values and modelling positive behaviour based on values, we are helping them to become independent and giving them the opportunity to develop their individual personalities which in turn helps them listen to their conscience, build their integrity and encourage them to help others. Every family has their own individual feelings and beliefs into the values in which they want to instil in their children but it is believed that honesty is something which should be encouraged and demonstrated to their children. This is something which can be achieved through modelling the way through personal example. Children learn from seeing how you treat them, overhearing your interactions with others and observing what you do through different situations throughout the day. Teaching the value of honesty to children is part of the development
of moral and emotional strength. The quality of honesty helps to develop character and solid selfesteem. Lessons about honesty are learned differentially, depending on the child’s age. If you start the teaching of honesty early on, you can continue to support this, as your children get older. Explain to your child what honesty means at his/her developmental level using words that they can understand at their ages and of course their level of maturity. Teaching honesty through example is the most effective way of helping children understand the value of honesty. Be honest with children at a level they can understand when deciding what to tell a child about a given situation. By doing so you will be demonstrating the self-respect that accompanies ethical behaviour which can further more help shape your child’s views and understanding of the ever changing world around them.

St. Michael’s School | Llanelli | 01554 820 325 | office@stmikes.co.uk
St. Michael’s appoint a new Headteacher St. Michael’s School in Llanelli has recently appointed Mr Alun Millington MA (Oxon) PGCE as their new Headteacher. Alun took up the post in January and we spoke to him about what it means to him to take on this new role. “As Headteacher I feel privileged to serve the parents and pupils of St. Michael’s School. This is my first term as Headteacher and I am grateful for the many positive responses I have received from parents to my appointment. I understand their wishes and desires for the School going forward, and I have assured everyone that any changes we make will be carefully considered. One of the things we are keen to demonstrate at St. Michael’s is our commitment to the ‘whole student’. Alongside celebrating academic success there is also substantial promotion and celebration of sporting and cultural talents and achievements. I trust parents will share my view that this is the right direction for us to go – excellence and opportunity in all things. Our caring pastoral ethos and small class sizes provide an environment in which each pupil
Listen to your children...
Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don’t listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won’t tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff. In thinking back to my childhood, all my experiences, everything I went through, it was all “big stuff” to me. And when I thinking back to whom I confided in, and who I entrusted my heart to, it was those who were able to “listen earnestly” to me, no matter what. You see, children implicitly look to us adults as role models of who they are
can reach their full potential. St. Michael’s pupils achieve outstanding academic results because of the quality of our teaching and the excellent relationships that exist between pupils, parents and staff. Our curricular and extracurricular flexibility gives us the chance to maximise the talents and abilities of each individual. I would be delighted for any interested parents to visit us and experience in person the atmosphere and academic integrity of our excellent school.” St. Michael’s School would also like to promote their Open Afternoon on the 5th May from 13.30 – as an ideal opportunity for any interested parents and pupils to experience the school first hand. to become, for better or for worse; they study us, they imitate us, they emulate us. Additionally, they look to us for validation and approval--they want to know that they are an important part of our lives and that we are genuinely a part of theirs. And if they cannot get this validation and approval from us... they will go elsewhere to find it... perhaps to places that are harmful to them such as gangs, drugs and crime. Show concern for the children in your life... especially your own. Hug them often. Listen attentively to what they have to say and engage them in fruitful conversation(s) no matter what; because at that moment, what they want to tell you, to them, is perhaps one of the most important things they can tell you. It is up to you to validate them by making it the most important thing they could tell you. And above all, be sure to let them know how much they mean to you and how important a role they play in your life. Before you know it... they will be all grown up. Be an “Active Listener”. Fruity Flapjacks Ingredients
Method
Flapjacks are great for picnics as they pack so easily. Try whatever dried fruit you like, raisins, cranberries, dried apricots, dates, the choice is yours.
⁞ Preheat oven to 170 degrees centigrade.
⁞ 200g dried fruit of your choice ⁞ 60g honey or golden syrup ⁞ 180g butter ⁞ 100g caster sugar ⁞ 275g rolled outs ⁞ Use a 20cm x 20cm square tin or similar to make 12 large flapjacks
⁞ Thoroughly clean your work surface area and then wash your hands. ⁞ Line the tin with baking paper ⁞ Melt the butter, honey/syrup and sugar together in either a bowl over a pan of hot water, or gently in the microwave, checking every 30 seconds. Stir together to allow the sugar to dissolve. ⁞ Add the rolled oats and dried fruit and stir, making sure they are thoroughly combined. ⁞ Tip the mixture into the lined tin and press down gently to spread the mixture out evenly. ⁞ Bake for 30-35 mins until golden. ⁞ Once out of oven cut gently into squares while the flapjack is still in the tin. Leave to cool in the tie and take out once cooled. ⁞ Store them in an airtight container.

Make the most of every second! head on the path through here and onto the sand dunes beach, you will see the lighthouse in the distance to the right. Our walk took around 3 hours, beach combing and playing along the way, we found bottled treasure and roman coins which I planted secretly along the route.
Are you looking for a fun day out this summer? Follow Family Days on their recent adventures. Whiteford Lighthouse and Cwm Ivy Tor are located on the coast at Whiteford Point near Whiteford Sands, on the Gower peninsula, South Wales. The lighthouse is the only remaining cast iron lighthouse surrounded by the sea in the United Kingdom. It was built in 1865. The tower is 61ft high and made up of eight courses of cast iron plates. The light was extinguished in 1921. When the tide is out you are able to walk up to and around the lighthouse. It’s strangely beautiful. To get there by car: B4295 to Llanrhidian, then C road to Llanmadoc. Continue through the village till you get to Cwm Ivy. A private car park with an honesty box is on the right hand side of the road, once parked head down the hill and through the National Trust gate towards Cwm Ivy Tor. You will come to Burrows cottage on your right nestled in a tall treed forest,
We decided we wanted to go on an adventure to a waterfall, so we headed to the Pontneddfechan waterfall centre in GlynNeath, South Wales. We parked at the waterfall centre and headed onto the waterfall trail to Sgwd Gwladus fall. It takes around 20 minutes to walk to the fall along the river on a well marked route but we had fun along the river stopping to explore and walk over fallen logs, our adventure lasted about 3 hours with a lengthy stop to swim at the fall. The Waterfall centre is a great place to pick up information for lots of other family walking routes. We decided to have a piratey adventure & go off in search of pirate loot & treasures, with a jar of chocolate coins and broken necklaces in my pocket we headed out... Our adventure took place at The Worms Head... Rhossili Bay. We had to wait until low tide to be able to cross the causeway, Once you establish what time low tide is you have 2.5hrs either side to cross the causeway without being cut off. All tide info can be found at the lookout by the causeways beginning.

Technology and our kids Over Easter the kids and I, (age 6, 7 and 10) trooped off to the Botanical Gardens of Wales. It was a beautiful sunny day, blossoms coming into bloom and plenty to see and do. As we meandered round the garden, a woman and her two teenage daughters caught my eye. All three were walking around, heads down, totally engrossed in their Smart phones. I was amazed at their ability to side step, trip hazards, negotiate steps and still remain glued to their phones. I later saw them in the café, and surprise, surprise, all three were engrossed in these tiny screens of wonder, silently spooning in their food. As an avid people watcher I wondered why they had come to such a beautiful place to spend so much time wrapped up in their phones. Were they busy Face Booking or tweeting about what a fab time they were having? But not actually engaging in the moment. Technology appears to be establishing itself in every part of our lives (mostly pushed by the Ad men) yet there is evidence that it is not all beneficial.
Oxford University neuroscientist, Baroness Susan Greenfield, a renowned social media critic, claims that we are losing touch with the creative and imaginative parts of our brain and that technology is actually rewiring the brain. Recent research has shown that the sound of a text message or an email hitting your inbox leads to a release of the pleasure hormone Dopamine (also a hormone linked to addiction). Now, we all know how difficult it is to ignore a text message or FB notification when it comes in, don’t we? Cris Rowan a leading US paediatric occupational therapist (zonein.ca) points out, that between the ages of 0 to 2 years, infant’s brains triple in size and continues in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age (Christakis 2011). Exposing this developing brain to excessive technology has been shown to cause behavior problems, attention issues and decreased ability to control emotions (tantrums). How much do kids ‘freak’ out when you take their technology of them? Other studies have discussed, back problems, (hunching over a screen for long periods), eyesight issues from constantly looking at a screen, developmental delay in fine motor skills (e.g.: writing) and reduced ability to socialize. The Taiwanese government has even gone as far as banning under 2 year olds from using electronic devices. So addictive are these devices that China has ‘internet junkie boot camps’ and in the US, ‘Digital Detox’ camps for adults’ allow overly wired professionals to free themselves from the shackles of technology, no tweeting allowed! Before you feel the urge to toss out your kids’ Ipads and take a sledgehammer to the X Box, it is all a question of balance and leading by example. Be aware of our own media and technology habits and maybe try a digital detox now and then. If any mums have had experience with this and have ideas on how they took control let us know (email: sales@kidscenemagazine.co.uk). Look out for our article ‘Technology, finding that balance’ in the next issue of Kidscene.
Book Reviews PICTURE BOOK TITLE: Hogs Hate Hugs! Little Hog AUTHOR: Tiziana Bendall-Brunello ILLUSTRATED: John Bendall-Brunello PUBLISHER: Lion Children’s Publishing Little Hog is very cute. Too cute infact because everyone just wants to hug him! Little Hog has tried all sorts of hugs – big hugs with Bear, small hugs with Mouse and slow hugs with Turtle. But after a prickly cuddle with Hedgehog and a heavy squeeze with Badger, Little Hog decides that he has had enough. So he pins up a poster on a tree declaring his feelings. Then he storms off to the forest. His family and friends are very disappointed. Surely no one is too old for a hug! So they hatch a little plan to change his mind. This is a sweet and gentle story that will appeal to all preschoolers and their parents. Charmingly illustrated by award winning John Bendall-Brunello. Whilst Tiziana Bendall-Brunello’s story is warm and comforting.
CHAPTER BOOK TITLE: Superhero School – Alien Attack! AUTHOR: Alan MacDonald ILLUSTRATED: Nigel Baines PUBLISHER: Bloomsbury Publishing Imagine if you could go to a school to develop your superpower – what would it be? Knock out breathe? But like any normal school there are dreaded exams to pass, which the Invincible are going to have contend with. The story opens at the Annual Superhero Fan Convention where the pupils are attending with Miss Marbles. From then on things start to change and Miles starts acting very strangely. Always Feeling Guilty I remember hearing this gut wrenching statement and thinking how horrendous a thing that was to say. Guilty for what? I tried to manoeuvre my ever growing bump out of the way of the perpetrator to this statement and carry on my shopping trip. Fast forward this to 7 years later and the fact of the matter is I do and completely agree. As soon as I had the chance to hold my new-born in my arms I felt guilty… guilty for the fact I’d been screaming for the past god knows how many hours, guilty for the fact I’d chosen to not breastfeed (what if they turned out to have intelligence problems, medical conditions etc.) guilty that I had to leave the room (and therefore them) to attempt to go to the toilet, guilty that the room was too hot/too cold/too sunny, that he looked like he’d been pulled out of a charity bag because I’d neglected to buy new-born and was convinced I’d be giving birth to a fully grown toddler…. And the list goes on and on and on.
As a parent I think you have to accept that guilt comes as part of the package. You feel guilty because you are ultimately the responsible one to steer them through this myriad of experience and mentalness we call life. However the trick is to not be ruled by that guilt. Accept it and put it to one side, take pride in the fact that actually you’re doing a pretty amazing job and your children love you for it. So you have to work full time… I do. I regularly have part-time friends (part-time workers, not friends! Although now you say it…) who say they don’t know how I do it… A really good partner and family support for one reason. I do it because I have to, plain and simple. However, what I ensure then is that my ‘free’ time is spent with focus on making my children’s lives as amazing as possible, and that doesn’t necessarily have to be materialistically. They say that the best things in life are not ‘things’ and I truly support that. The most

fun we have as a family is spent in the local park, having picnics, bug hunting, playing football out the back garden. I see and understand that my boys only really want to have my time, a touch, a hug, a kind supportive word all mean the world to a little one. I hope my boys feel that they are growing up in a loving, supportive, and nurturing environment that is working towards making them the most amazing individuals. It’s the thing that drives me forward every day. Guilt is a side-effect of effective parenting. We all feel it, we all live with it, we all deal with it the best possible way we can…. And yes it’s perfectly normal to feel guilty that your little one went to school today minus their fruit break, or fell over when you weren’t watching, or has sat watching telly for the past hour whilst you frantically run around the house, cleaning, with arms full of washing and making sure the dinner doesn’t burn…. GO YOU, YOU’RE FAB!

Dr. Louise... Eczema Atopic eczema, an allergic condition, is the most common type of eczema. It’s an inflammation of the skin and sometimes called dermatitis. It usually starts in childhood, before the age of 5. About 2 in 3 children then grow out of it by their mid-teens. It tends to flare up from time to time, varying in severity each time, then settling down. The condition is usually managed with moisturisers or ointments, with steroid creams used during a flare-up. The cause is unknown, but genetic factors play a part, and other possibilities may be house dust mite, food allergy, pollens, climate change, pollution, etc.
What are the symptoms? The skin is dry, and some areas of the skin become red & inflamed. Most commonly, the eczema is flexural, meaning areas next to skin creases are affected, i.e front of the elbows and wrists, behind the knees and around the neck. In babes, the face is commonly affected. Eczema is itchy and if you scratch it a lot, the skin patches may become thickened. Sometimes the skin becomes blistered & weepy, which can cause secondary bacterial infection.
In mild eczema, flare-ups may cause just one or two inflamed skin patches. In severe cases, flare-ups can last several weeks and cover a large surface area of skin.
How is atopic eczema treated? Some flare-
ups occur for no obvious reason. Sometimes there’s a trigger, usually an irritant to the skin. It is therefore advisable to avoid soaps & bubble baths, which dry the skin. Use a soap substitute instead, plus a bath/shower moisturiser. Other possible irritants are biological washing powder & fabric conditioner. Extremes of temperature may also worsen eczema. Wear smooth fabrics or cotton clothes next to the skin, rather than irritating material. Try as much as possible not to scratch an itch; rub with fingers rather than scratch with nails. The 2nd step of treatment is the daily use of moisturisers (emollients). These are lotions, Page 25
|
www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk
creams, ointments and bath/shower additives which prevent the skin becoming dry in eczema. You should apply emollients daily (to the skin in the direction of hair growth) as often as needed. Importantly, do not stop using emollients when the skin looks good. Bath additive emollients should be used in addition to and not instead of skin emollients. Beware they will coat the bath, making it greasy & slippery.
The 3rd step is topical steroids – steroid
creams & ointments. They’re used during a flareup. Usually, the lowest-strength steroid is
“ It usually starts in childhood, before the age of 5. About 2 in 3 children then grow out of it by their mid-teens.” prescribed first - an increased strength is prescribed later if needed. Creams are used on moist/weepy skin. Ointments are used on dry/thickened skin. Lotions are for hairy areas, e.g.scalp. Topical steroids should be stopped once the flare-up has settled down, as continued use can give side effects. Don’t forget to use your emollients as well, when on a course of topical steroids. When using the two treatments together, apply the emollient first then wait 15 mins for it to sink in, before applying the steroid. Sometimes eczema becomes infected during a flare-up, often requiring antibiotics, in addition to the skin treatment. See your GP if a flare-up is getting worse or not clearing despite the usual treatment.

My Child Gets Distracted Easily, Should I Be Worried?
Does your child find it difficult to pay attention? Is your child easily distracted by what’s going on around them?
Does your child day-dream a lot?
It is a common problem and a worry for many parents and it can actually hinder the progress a child makes. In the classroom setting, keeping students focused on learning can be a challenging task. However, at Kip McGrath, we have learnt to overcome these sorts of problems by using some very simple techniques.
1. Keep Tasks Short and Sweet
Children have an average attention span of 15 minutes. After this time, they get bored and lose focus. So work solidly for 15 minutes and then make a change. At Kip McGrath, each activity is designed to last 15 minutes, children are then moved onto another activity which uses another study skill. For example we use worksheets, computers, textbooks and puzzles on the floor etc. If you are working on reading with your child at home, spend the first 15 minutes reading then maybe move onto writing 5 questions you would like to ask the main character in the book. You could find a short video on a scene to watch from the book and finally answer some questions to test their understanding. Notice that each of these activities uses a different type of learning skill and therefore removes the boredom element. Before you know it there will be an hour’s work completed!
2. Remove All Distractions
If you know that your child will be distracted by the phone ringing or by overhearing an advert on TV, then switch them both off! If there are other children in the room, move your child so that interaction between them is minimal. All equipment must be on the table before work begins. Also ensure all toilet breaks are done before you start work!
3. Is the work too hard or too easy?
Before you start assuming that your child has problems concentrating, you need to know what your child is capable of and what is expected for their age. If a child’s work is not set at the right level, you will either get a child who is bored
because the work is too easy or a child who will avoid the work because it is too hard. Pitching it at the right level is key to how we teach at Kip McGrath. We plan individual learning programmes for each of our children. This ensures that everyone is challenged but also boosts their levels of confidence and motivates them to learn. If you find the national curriculum difficult to understand you could invest in some good study books. These will summarise what your child needs to know and use them as a guide. You may need to get workbooks that are aimed at younger year groups so that your child can complete them easily and develop good levels of concentration. These techniques work very well for us at Kip McGrath. I have seen many children who have difficulty concentrating at school thrive in our lessons. If you have any concerns about your child’s concentration, call Claire on 299996 to book a free assessment.
MUM TO Mumpreneur Tell us about your business
Schoolhouse Daycare Limited operates 6 Full Daycare settings and 2 Playscheme’s across South Wales, covering the area’s of Carmarthen, Swansea, Port Talbot and Bridgend. We employ 116 staff caring for approximately 800 families. We really believe in offering a quality service to all. We understand that each family has their own needs and we strive to deliver an individual service, second to none! I believe our reputation goes before us. Over the years we have seen competitor numbers decline and businesses even close but we continue to go from strength to strength. We are a nursery chain and are able to share best practise, audit our sites independently and continually improve by sharing idea’s, this ensures that we are always delivering the best possible service that we can.
Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business?
I started working for Schoolhouse as a qualified teacher at our Singleton site in Sketty in 1999. One month later, I became the Nursery Manager. From there my employers promoted me to Area Manager in 2004 and then five years later I completed a Management buyout. I never thought I would be in the position of owning my own business but I love what I do and that is what has led me to be in this very privileged position. I never take anything for granted, I continue to work hard and involve myself as best I can in the daily lives of my six nurseries. Now, I would recommend anyone to start their own business, for me it gives me real freedom to deliver a childcare service how I want it. My team of staff are fantastic professionals, we all work together – our tag line is ‘together we enjoy learning, encourage confidence and love life’ and that’s what we are all striving for each and every day in our work lives.
How many children do you have - tell us a bit about your family I have one son, Lewys. He will be 17 years old in July so has been with me almost from the start of my journey at Schoolhouse. I have been married Page 29
|
www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk
for only 8 years but have been with my husband for nearly 25 years. – I think we were trying each other out!
How do you juggle childcare?
These days it’s so easy! Lewys is now in 6th form doing his A’ Levels, so pretty much comes and goes as he pleases. When he was younger however, I can’t say it was easy. Juggling childcare with grandparents, nursery and both parent’s working full time was a hard slog but we got there in the end and it has all been worth while.
What do you do to relax?
I like to go walking on the weekends. We enjoy caravanning and being outside and I have very recently acquired a beagle puppy, Bella, so looking after her is great fun too!
What’s been your biggest challenge in business and how have you overcome it?
For me, my challenge has been that I have been in two partnerships since the Management Buyout. I’m not sure that I ever believed that I could have done it on my own before. Unfortunately both partnerships didn’t work out due to us having different values and goals for the business. Personally it has been an emotional rollercoaster and financially a very expensive process but now the company is fully owned by my husband and myself and we can ensure that a quality service is provided that is sustainable and grows year on year - so staff are secure in their jobs and parents are happy with our settings and service.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to other mums wanting to start their own business? Make sure you do something you love. My most favourite quote in the world is by Mary Poppins ‘In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun... you find the fun and Snap! The jobs a game...’ Go for it! YOU can do it...
