Hi there! Spring is in the air..... the weather is improving, the flowers are starting to bloom and the Easter holidays are on their way! This edition of Kidscene includes a fantastic selection of family shows on offer over the next 2 months. I love going to the theatre and the kids find it a real treat. We don't go that often, as it can be quite pricey but when we do everyone is very excited. There is always so much going on during the Easter holidays and this year is no exception. Activities and days out galore.....just choose whatever takes your fancy! I hope you and the kids have a fantastic Easter holiday.
20,000 copies of Kidscene Magazine are delivered directly into primary schools from SA1 to SA15 areas bi-monthly.

Festival of Austism Autism is a spectrum of lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions that often presents various challenges for autistic people and their families.
It is estimated that there are around 700,000 people in the UK with an autism diagnosis. Together with their families they make up around 2.8 million people, whose lives are touched by autism every single day. The experience of autism can bring positive opportunities, great inspiration, innovation and creativity. The main aim of this event is to celebrate the achievements of those touched by autism. We want the Festival to be an opportunity for people to come together in order to celebrate the positive aspects of autism. We also hope to improve the understanding of autism amongst educational, health, medical and social care professionals through this event. It is our community and we care about everyone within it; everyone is different, unique and valued. We hope to bring together various collaborative partners from across South Wales to participate in this festival of autism. Everyone is invited and we hope you can join us for the festival. Please Save The Date – 23rd April 2017. We Want Your Bunting! These will mirror the overall aim of the festival - to bring together autistic people, their families and members of the wider public. Any bunting is very welcome, fabric, PVC, A4 triangles with messages etc.. We want buntings as unique as you are. Please visit Festival of Autism Swansea for more information about the festival and where to take your bunting.

The Baby, Toddler and Children’s Show 2017
Back again for 2017 is 96.4 FM The Wave and Swansea Sound radio’s popular and well loved event ‘The Baby, Toddler and Children’s Show’. The show itself, a mix of exhibitor stands and fun ‘things to do’ with your children is back this spring on May 7th and will be taking place in The Liberty Stadium Swansea - home to Ospreys Rugby and of course Premiership club Swansea City FC. On the day, you can expect to see over fifty ‘exhibitors’ all with something different to offer attendees on the day; baby and children’s clothing companies, buggies and pushchairs, small crafting companies, keepsakes and mementoes right the way to swimming lessons, baby yoga, massage, and photographers. There will also be antenatal and post natal care support on the day too. It really is the perfect place to visit if you are expecting a baby, have recently had a baby, or have a toddler or pre schooler. This year there’ll be plenty to do for your small children on the day with inflatables, bouncy castles, face painting, dance and play workshops as well as a cafe area to sit down and take stock of all the information given on the day! Having something there for EVERY member of the family is at the forefront of the event; “It’s really key that there’s something for everyone on the day” says Robyn Lee, event manager for The Baby, Toddler and Children’s Show. “It really is a one stop event for everyone and you can spend nearly all day if you want to, or just nip in and out depending on what you want to take from it all. It’s going to have all the information and products for those who are expecting, as well as fun and games for toddlers to keep them entertained on the day while mum has a browse at the businesses. We’ll also have companies there who can advise and talk through everything from nurseries and childcare options to messy play, swimming and gymnastics lessons for babies, toddlers and children up to five years old”. Plus on the day will be the launch of Swansea Sound and The Wave’s ‘Beautiful Baby’ competition; where you’ll be able to bring along your baby or toddler (or both) and enter them into the competition to win a photoshoot package. There will be two age ranges; newborn to ten months and then ten months to eighteen months with the winner being announced no later than two weeks after the event. The Baby, Toddler and Children’s Show takes place on Sunday 7th May from 11am at The Liberty Stadium Swansea. With free parking, free entry, and a range of exhibitors, workshops and fun and games for the little ones. If you wish to get more information on the show please contact robyn.shefford@thewave.co.uk www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk |

The Minimalism Game...
Apps for learning!
H
ave you ever thought “If I just had a bit more space, or even a bigger house, then I would finally have a tidy home?” Have you ever wondered if a better (and cheaper) solution might be less stuff? I have 3 young children, and a musician Husband, and I am a Minimalist. This doesn't mean my home is empty and devoid of comfort. It simply means that I only have things in my home that add value. Minimalism isn't about no stuff for the sake of it, or for appearances. It’s about clearing out the excess, letting go of the things you don’t actually need or even like, and only keeping what genuinely adds something to you life. I’ve been on a journey to Minimalism for 3 years and I now have a house that isn’t bursting at the seams with stuff, every thing has a purpose and a home, so even when my whirlwind kids have been raging through it, it only ever takes a few minutes to get it tidy again. All that extra time that I no longer spend tidying, or searching the shops for the perfect storage solution, is mine again to live my life to the full and most importantly to spend at the beach ;) Sound good? If you’re intrigued then you might want to undertake the Minimalism Game, created by “The Minimalists” Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Milburn On the 1st of the month you get rid of 1 thing, on the 2nd you get rid of 2 things, and so on, and then on day 30; 30 things. Over the course of 1 month you will, without much effort, clear over 500 things from your home. The freedom clearing the excess from our homes brings is well worth the effort.

New research released today by Mothercare and Hubbub reveals that the nations’ mums and dads are hanging on to huge amounts of baby clothing, long after their little ones have all grown up - the equivalent of 250 items of baby clothing for every baby born in the UK in 2017! In the run up to Mother’s Day, the #GiftABundle initiative is asking parents to gift quality unwanted baby and children’s clothing to other local families in need Over the next four weeks, bundles of six items of goodquality clothing for children up to three years old can be handed in at selected Mothercare stores across the UK. The clothing will then be beautifully gift-wrapped and distributed to other local families. For more details of participating Mothercare stores, tips for making your children’s clothing last longer and ideas for running your own #GiftABundle campaign locally visitwww. mothercare.com

S
t Michael’s Prep School has announced a collaborative initiative with El Centro; a Spanish Independent School based near Cadiz, Andalusia. From early February, St. Michael’s School will be hosting a small group of Year 5/6 pupils at the school for a six week school experience; the local connection being that El Centro was founded by Mrs Linda Randell, originally from Mumbles in Swansea.
Pupils at El Centro Ingles are taught through English in most subjects, and they theme their events around Wales and Welsh culture. This unique twist on the language school model is the brainchild of Mrs Randell, and pupils at El Centro express their connection to Wales through events such as their annual St. David’s Day celebration and Eisteddfod.

Chapter Book Title: Tommy Donbavand’s Funny Shorts Age: 7 – 9 years Written: Tommy Donbavand Illustrated: Leo Trinidad Tommy Donbavand’s Funny Shorts are a series of colour illustrated, chapter based funky reader books. From the weregranny in My Granny bit my Bum to a monster Viking baby in Viking Kong, the books are off beat, well-paced and highly amusing. In the quirky Night of the Toddlers, Professor Nigella Troopy has invented ‘Born Again’ cream which will surely earn her the promotion she craves. But she is pipped at the post by her rival Professor Fanton. So she decides to get her own back on humanity, by using the cream. She develops an extra strength formula with powerful results. Now ‘Born Again’ will really make you look years younger – literally! She sets on her evil mission to reduce the entire population to toddlers. When Gail and Bobby buy a pot for their Mum’s birthday, they get more than they bargained for. They are going to have to solve the problem themselves as now there’s no-one left to help them – everyone has been transformed into two years old kiddies, even the Queen! It’s an engaging and easy to read storyline. The theme of a scorned individual wanting to extract revenge by transforming others is a popular one. This version appealed to me with its light hearted wit at the adult’s expense. It’s told with just the right amount of irreverence.

The Cat and the King is a fully illustrated novel. It combines both length and detailed content suitable for older more experienced readers, with a format and three colour (grey, pink and red) narrative illustrations that will appeal and encourage newly independent readers.
Novel Title: The Cat and the King Age: 5 – 9 years Written and illustrated by Nick Sharratt. Nick Sharratt is a highly regarded illustrator, well known for his picture books. Now he has impressed his own style upon on his debut novel, The Cat and the King. The target readership of the book, particularly at the lower end of the age range, is usually served by early readers which are then followed by chapter books.
Major life changes aren’t easy for anyone to deal with, even a King. When an Unfortunate Accident with a fire breathing dragon causes his castle to be burned down, he moves into Castle Close. Now the King has had to downsize everything in his life. After being so pampered, it’s going to take a while to get used to having to work out everything for yourself. It’s certainly a new experience! Doing the washing up or going shopping. Still, there are always comforting reminders to be had. Take the food in the supermarket for example – King prawns, Coronation chicken and Jersey Royal potatoes. Overall, the book is a great package. A very humorous plotline with a gentle message about change and friendship. Plus the educational benefits with is wordplay, ideal for extending vocabulary and reading development.

MISCARRIA

any women have a slight amount of vaginal bleeding at the time of their missed period. This ‘spotting’ is called an implantation bleed & occurs when the fertilized egg is implanting itself in the wall of the womb. It is harmless. Any bleeding which occurs from the time of the missed period, should be taken seriously. The most common cause of such bleeding is miscarriage. Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy at any time up to the 24th week ( the average pregnancy last 40 weeks). Early miscarriages are those which occur under 13 wks. Late miscarriages occur btw 13-24 wks. A loss after this time is termed a stillbirth. About 1 in 4 recognised pregnancies end in miscarriage. It is thought that most early miscarriages are caused by a ‘one-off fault’ in the genes, a ‘one-off’ chromosomal problem with the developing fetus. These ‘genetic mistakes’ rarely happen again. Factors that increase the risk of miscarriage are: older women-the aforementioned genetic mistakes become more common over the age of 35, smoking, drinking alcohol, recreational drug use, fertility problems, abnormalities of the womb, poorly controlled diabetes, certain medical conditions, certain infections, e.g. Rubella & Listeria. Recurrent miscarriage is classed as three or more miscarriages in a row. This would prompt investigations to be carried out & there are a variety of causes, not covered in this article. After a miscarriage it is common to feel guilty and to blame yourself. Miscarriage is not caused by lifting, straining, working too hard, straining on the toilet, sex, eating spicy foods or normal exercise. There is also no proof that waiting for a certain length of time after a miscarriage improves your chances of having a healthy pregnancy next time. The typical pain with a miscarriage is crampy lower tummy pain & is accompanied by vaginal bleeding. You may pass something via the vagina that looks like a blood clot & then the bleeding gradually settles. A lot of women describe the process as like a heavy period, however if the bleeding is very heavy or you have severe abdominal pain, you'll need to go to hospital. Painful bleeding can also be the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy develops outside the womb, usually in a fallopian tube. This is less common than miscarriage but usually reveals itself at 6-8 wks after the missed period. The pain is often sharp, severe, one-sided. Bleeding is often absent but can be slight & dark in colour. Accompanying symptoms may include diarrhoea, feeling faint, pain on opening bowels. Sometimes there are no symptoms until you collapse due to internal bleeding. This is a ruptured ectopic pregnancy & is a potentially

In some cases of miscarriage, there are no symptoms. The fetus stops developing or dies but it remains in the womb. You may stop experiencing pregnancy symptoms. This type of miscarriage may not be found until you have a routine ultrasound scan at 12 wks. This is referred to by doctors as a missed miscarriage. Most women with bleeding in early pregnancy are seen at an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit ( EPAU) at the hospital. There, you’ll have a transvaginal ultrasound scan, done by inserting a small probe inside your vagina. This helps to determine whether the bleeding is due to: -A threatened miscarriage: a heartbeat will be seen inside the womb & usually the bleeding settles. Usually not associated with pain. -A miscarriage: no heartbeat is seen. -Some other cause of bleeding (e.g. an ectopic pregnancy or even a hormone-related change at the neck of the womb).
If it is unclear from your ultrasound scan whether the pregnancy is healthy or not then you may be asked to return for a repeat scan in one to two weeks. Once the cause of bleeding is known, the doctor will advise you on your treatment options. Expectant management: means letting nature take its course-in most cases, the remains of the pregnancy are passed out naturally and the bleeding will stop within a few days after this, although it can take up to 14 days to occur. In some cases of ‘missed miscarriage’ (usually only picked up at 12 wk scan, often no symptoms) doctors may offer you what is called medical management of your miscarriage. This means a tablet to take either by mouth or to insert into your vagina, to empty your womb. Some women experience quite severe tummy (abdominal) cramps with this treatment. You may continue to bleed for up to three weeks, but it shouldn’t be too heavy. This form of treatment can usually be done at home, avoiding the need for hospital admission/an operation .An operation may be offered to you, however, if the bleeding does not stop within a few days, or if the bleeding is severe. If the options above are not suitable or are not successful then it is likely you will be offered an operation, i.e. surgical management of miscarriage. In this operation, the neck of your womb (the cervix) is gently opened and a narrow suction tube is placed into your womb to remove the remains of your pregnancy. This operation takes around 10 minutes. Losing a pregnancy can be hard for both partners. However, most couples who experience miscarriage will go on to have a successful pregnancy next time. There are lots of miscarriage support groups available which can be found using Google or enquiring at your EPAU/GP Surgery.
