Sept/Oct Back to a new school year... as much as I adore the summer holidays with it's long days and the later nights it tends to bring, part of me always looks forward to getting back into more of a routine and a bit of structure to my day and dare i say it, a little bit of peace when the kids go back to school! The Autumn Half Term this year is a later one and crosses into November, so I have added in some early November activities, although do visit www. kidscenemagazine.co.uk or Kidsceneswansea on Facebook for a more up to date Half Term activity list, closer to the time. I did a bit of cooking for this edition ( I love cooking so it was no hardship) and between me and my 10 year old daughter, we put together a few terrifyingly tasty Halloween treats. They were very easy so why not let the kids make their own party food this year! Also check out all the local Panto options this year, get in early and book ahead. I hope you all have great autumn Term!
20,000 copies of Kidscene Magazine are delivered directly into primary schools from SA1 to SA15 areas bi-monthly.

Stepheni Kays graduated in 2016 after completing a part-time BA (Honours) Degree in Humanities. This is a major achievement for anyone, but especially so in Stepheni’s case as she only arrived in Wales from her native country in 2008. Committed to making the most of the opportunities available to her, Stepheni began her studies with great determination. Originally studying a range of accredited courses at the Action Resource Centre (ARC) in Blaenymaes, Swansea. Stepheni excelled as a student and decided to enrol on the Part-time BA (Honours) Humanities Degree delivered by The Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE) at Swansea University. Stepheni, a mother of 5, studied Sociology and Psychology on a part-time basis at community venues throughout Swansea as well as at Swansea University’s Singleton Campus, while successfully managing her degree alongside full-time employment. Stepheni believes the degree has developed her skills, knowledge and confidence: “The degree is flexible and versatile and can really open doors for you. I cannot say enough about DACE staff, they really want you to succeed. I am now studying for an MA in Development and Human Rights at Swansea University, alongside my role as Integration Officer for Swansea City of Sanctuary”. Tell us a little bit about yourself I’m a mum of three wonderful and busy children, a wife to high flying businessman and MD of my own company. As a former GB and Welsh international gymnast I grew up in the world of sport so I decided to start my own business doing something I am passionate about. Collaborating my Honours degree in Business and Marketing and my lifetime passion of gymnastics to create something special. Tell us about your business Quatro is a family business that was started by my father in the early 1990’s. I joined the family business 8 years ago and diversified the company by starting a sports clothing line. We are based in Fforestfach, Swansea. Running predominantly as on-line business, with an in house design, marketing and sales team. We also travel around the world to attend competitions and events with our Quatro range. We have recently partnered with British Gymnastics and are now the official sponsors of Team GB which is our biggest accolade to date, and a testament to the hard work and passion that goes into our products. We trade globally and have kitted out teams in the Olympics and World Championships as well as many gymnastics team from all corners of the world. Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? It all started in September 2011 just before the birth of my first daughter. As of course isn’t that the most natural thing to do as you are about to start a family? I wanted to do something that my family would be proud of and create something that I would be remembered for and be involved in an industry that I have been immersed in since a young child. I had so many exciting ideas I wanted to try out and I could see there was a gap in the market for something special. What do you do to relax? Sleep….. Having three young children, working full time and giving the children as many opportunities to enjoy activities they love to do after school such as Gymnastics, ballet and swimming doesn’t leave many hours left in the day after dinner and a bath. I enjoy going to yoga and the gym when I do find myself with a spare hour in the day. I also enjoy cooking when I get the opportunity, however I’m no Jamie Oliver. Right now spending as much time with the kids while they are young is my priority, as soon enough they’ll be off living their own dreams and creating their own memories.
What has been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? The biggest challenge is definitely getting the work/life balance right. My husband and I are quickly learning that time passes by so swiftly and if we don’t stop to take note of it our young children will be young adults before we know it and that special time of childhood innocence will have passed us by. We now try and plan our diaries much better to take time off as a family. Even if it’s just sitting and playing in the garden or going to the beach, it’s the simple things in life that are most important. Give us your top tips for a well-balanced home and work life? I am very blessed to have a fantastic support network of family and friends around me, without which I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. Family time is so important to us, so we do try and make time every month to do something nice together as a family, whether it’s a BBQ at home together or a trip to the Gower. My top tips would be; Build downtime into your schedule Turn the e-mails off at home Work smarter, not harder Learn to say no What is the one piece of advice you would give to other mums wanting to start their own business? Dream big, work hard and surround myself with people you love.

Llanelli Wetland Centre They’re back… The GIANT LEGO® brick animal trail returns to WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre this autumn! Will you be able to find them all? The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust’s (WWT) specially created giant LEGO brick animal trail, the only one of its kind in the UK, will be landing back at WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre on Saturday 9 September. This is the second time these amazing characters will be seen in Wales, standing among the real life animals that inspired them. They’ll be joined this year by the glorious figure of Benedict the Bewick’s Swan and a beautifully detailed Mac the Mallard. The giant animals (some up to twelve times life size!) include Kate the Kingfisher, Flavia the Flamingo, Chris the Crane, and Natalie the Nene. In total, more than 170,000 LEGO bricks were used over 1,209 hours to
make all 11 characters! Interested in Fostering? Parents preparing to say goodbye to their children as they leave for university next month are being urged to think about fostering. Some so-called “empty nesters” may relish the peace and quiet but others may be looking for a new challenge and Foster Swansea, Swansea Council’s fostering service, says fostering can be a refreshing continuation from traditional parenthood. The team is hoping to hear from people with an empty or spare bedroom who might consider becoming a foster carer. Matthew Simons, Business Development Officer for Foster Swansea, said: “Our team of foster carers come from all walks of life and all age groups and include families and empty nesters who’ve seen their children grow up and move on. “At this time of year, when A-Levels results are in and children are embarking on their first steps towards independence at university, their parents minds may turn to wondering what an empty house sounds like. “What I would say to them is our foster carers are always saying there are few roles in life to match the rewarding sense of achievement they feel when they see a young person in their care thriving and developing to be the best they can be. “While some of the demands of fostering are similar to those of being a parent, Foster Swansea will help them every step of the way through the training programme because many of the children who come through their door will have needs that they may not have experienced before. “We also offer round the clock support and make every effort to ensure each placement works for the child or young person and the foster carer or family as well.” To find out more about becoming a carer phone the team on 0300 555 0111 or visit www.fosterswansea.org

• CHILDHOOD
OBESITY•
What are the causes of childhood obesity? The
principle of weight gain in children is the same as that in adults; your weight depends on how much energy you take in and how much energy your body uses up. If energy taken in does not balance energy used up then the net result is weight gain,& this applies to children & adults alike.
Causes for this are: • Eating & drinking more than their body needs. Having too many sugary or fatty foods & drinks is a common problem.
This article tackles the subject of childhood obesity. 1 in 3 children in the UK are overweight or obese & the UK has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in Europe. No parent wants to hear that their child is fat, in the same way that no adult wants to be told that they’re overweight/obese. The aim of this article is to help parents identify if their child is overweight & inform them of the dangers of letting your child become overweight. In the next edition, I’ll be providing advice on how to help your child achieve & maintain a healthy weight. There will also be advice from a dietician.
As a parent, how do I know if my child is overweight or obese? Doctors, your school or
practice nurse can look to see whether your child is overweight or obese by calculating their body mass index (BMI), a measurement of your child’s weight in relation to his height. The formula for calculation is: weight (kg)/ height m2. However, it is important to note that a child's BMI is not interpreted in the same way as an adult's BMI. Instead, the BMI is charted on special growth charts, which will illustrate how your child's BMI compares with the normal range for children of a similar age, sex and ethnic background.
What are the health risks associated with a child being overweight or obese? They have an increased risk of developing various childhood health problems, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver, gallstones & heart disease. You may recognise these as problems affecting adults, but with the rise in childhood obesity, these conditions are now affecting younger people. There’s also an increased risk of joint problems like wear & tear arthritis due to burden of carrying excess weight. He/she is also at increased risk of going through puberty early, breathing problems (worsening of asthma, breathing problems whilst asleep, shortness of breath on exercise) & vitamin deficiencies. They are also more likely to become an overweight or obese adult and have an increased risk of heart

• Lack of physical activity, even if the child is eating & drinking the right amounts& the right kind of foods. • Being overweight or obese does run in families. This may partly be due to learning bad eating habits from your parents as a child. However, for some people there may be a genetic factor at play, making them prone to overeating. When you eat, certain hormones and brain chemicals send messages to parts of your brain to say that you have had enough and to stop eating. In some people, this feeling of fullness (satiety) may be not as good as it is in others. However, if you do inherit a tendency to overeat, this should not be used as an excuse, as it is not inevitable that you will become overweight or obese. You can learn about the power of your appetite, ways to resist it, be strict on what you eat and do some regular physical activity. • Not getting enough sleep has been suggested as another possible risk factor for obesity in children. There seems to be a trend of children going to bed later but, also, too little physical exercise can lead to poor sleep. • Rarely, a child has a medical cause for being overweight or obese, e.g.a rare genetic disease. Conditions such as an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) or other hormone problems may also be a cause. Some medicines can also make children more likely to put on weight
The good news, at the end of all the info above, is that if obesity is recognised and treated in childhood/teenage years, some of these health problems may be reversed, or even prevented. The child is also more likely to grow into an adult who has a healthy weight. Next time, I’ll be providing advice on how to help your child achieve & maintain a healthy weight. There will also be advice from a dietician.

Existing residence and contact orders will be treated as child arrangements Orders. Bear in mind that if you were a resident parent (including a parent with shared residence), you will be considered a person with whom the child lives. If you have a Contact Order, you will be considered a person with whom the child spends time or otherwise has contact.
What is a Child Arrangement Order? Peter Lynn and Partners specialise in child law, understanding the sensitivity and expertise required when dealing with the interests of children. Our experience of acting for parents and children in difficult child arrangement disputes allows us an intimate understanding of how to work towards the best interests of the child. When a family is separating, whether the parents are married or not, planning the future of any children involved is difficult. With whom and where will they reside? What contact will take place? Where will they be educated? Will they keep the same name? If issues regarding the time each parent spends with the child or children cannot be agreed, then an application can be made to the Court for a Child Arrangements Order. Child Arrangements Orders replaced Residence and Contact Orders on 22nd April 2014. The new order sets out who a child should live, spend time or otherwise have contact with.
Is this different to an existing residence or contact order? No. The only change is a single order will be issued rather than a separate residence and contact order. A Child Arrangement Order talks of parties in terms of ´the person with whom the child lives´ (i.e. the resident parent by another name) and the person who the child spends time with or otherwise has contact with (the non-resident or contact parent). When the order states the child lives with both parents (albeit in different places at different times), it’s comparable to the what was previously known as a Shared Residence Order (as before, the times spent at each parent’s homes can be different). The same features of the resident parent and non-resident parent exist e.g. a parent with whom the child lives (what was called the resident parent) can take children abroad for up to a month without the non-resident parent’s or court’s consent, while the non-resident parent (parent who the child spends time with or otherwise has contact) cannot.

Who can apply? Any parent or guardian of the children can apply for a Child Arrangements Order. People who meet any of the following criteria also have the automatic right to apply for contact with your children.
· Any party to a marriage where the children were a part of their family · if they lived with the children for at least three years within the last five years, and their application to the Court is made within three months of the children no longer living with them · if there is a Child Arrangements Order in force, and they have the consent of the person with whom the children legally reside · if the children are in Local Authority care and they have the consent of the Local Authority · if they have the consent of each person who holds Parental Responsibility for the children.
What if I do not have an automatic right to apply? For people who do not meet these criteria, when reaching the decision to grant permission, the Court will consider the merits of their application, their connection with your children and whether granting the order would cause harm to the children.
How long does a Child Arrangement Order last? Until the child is 16, or 18 in exceptional circumstances and where stated in the Court Order. If you move back in with your ex-partner, the order will cease after a period of 6 months of your living together. We will provide you with emotional support and expert legal advice to assist you. Acting with sensitivity and discretion, our expert solicitors can help find the best resolution for you and your children, always ensuring their best interests are kept at the heart of the negotiations. Is Your Bedroom The Place Of
Ultimate
Sanctuary?
Our bedroom is the most important room in our lives, from it being a playroom when we were young to an escape when we were teenagers, all the way up to becoming our haven when we reach adulthood; our bedrooms are a place of comfort to us, a space where we can truly be ourselves and be at peace. When you think about it, this is no surprise, as we spend most of our lives in our bedrooms. What is surprising however, is what this one room symbolises to us.
Our bedroom is the one room that is completely ours. A place that we seek when we want to relax, a space that is made for unwinding from the stresses of the day and escaping life for just a moment. It is the one place that we can reconnect with ourselves, rejuvenate, and appreciate how amazing we are and what we’ve accomplished. With one room as important as this, it does come as a surprise that we don’t devote a lot more time and energy into creating the perfect sanctuary. When designed right, our bedrooms can offer the same healing benefits as a relaxing spa experience. They can be transformed into a sacred place of tranquility, a place where you can press “reset” on your life and relax, restore, renew and revitalise. When designed right, our bedrooms can provide us with the ultimate getaway and help us return to everyday life as our best self.
What would your ideal bedroom look like? Share it with us: Enterprise2k Enterprise2000UK
How to Create Your Own Tranquil Space
1) Declutter the space - less is more and a clutter-free space helps to reduce stress and promote relaxation. 2) Ban electronics from the bedroom - the light from our screens messes with our body’s ability to distinguish between day and night, so keep electronics out your room and you’ll get a great nights sleep. 3) Decorate your room with things that bring you joy - one of the easiest ways to create the ultimate relaxing space is to surround yourself with objects that make you smile. You’ll soon find that you are surrounded by less stuff but with things that mean more to you. 4) Invest in a high-quality mattress - sleep is vital for optimal health so make sure you treat your body with a good quality mattress. After all, how else will you be rid of the stresses of your day? 5) Create the perfect surroundings - fitted furniture will make the most of your space, get you organized and give you a feel of calm and luxury 6) Choose a soothing colour scheme - by choosing neutral tones that compliment your accessories, you’ll find that your mood will reflect the environment around you. 7) Wear loose fitting pyjamas - what’s the best way to relax? To get comfortable of course! Ensure you’re not restricted with loose pyjamas and you’ll be relaxing in no time.
