Find your Feel Good
The Big Retreat Wales
Friday 25th May - Monday 28th May 2018
As a busy parent, happiness is seeing your kids have the time of their lives… Well, if we are completely honest, true happiness is seeing your kids having the time of their lives, while you are too. In early Summer, the newest festival in the West – The Big Retreat Wales - kicks off for its second outing in the glorious Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Yes, there’s great music, including Welsh stars Rusty Shackle and Ragsy (from The Voice), yes, there’s amazing food and craft ale. But the whole ‘thing’ about The Big Retreat is feel-good. For your body and mind, Fitness/Yoga For that little bit of calm there’s creativity. For your sins, there’s whisky and gin tasting and wickedly delicious local foods (Alana from The F R I D AY 2 5 T H M AY - M O N D AY 2 8 T H M AY 2 0 1 8 Apprentice is there with her Ridiculously Rich cakes!) Becky King went with her family last year. “We got there and, wow, we were met by the view, it’s amazing!” she said. “Being there somehow put everything into perspective. With a glass of wine in our hands we knew this was going to be a weekend to relax and have fun with the kids.” What makes this such a special little festival is the vibe. Set on an old castle terrace, enclosed in a walled garden, with breath-taking views over the Cleddau river, it feels so embracing, friendly and - for families – so safe with acres of pasture and woodland all around to explore. The whole family get to try their hands at bushcraft, foraging, cooking, bug hunts, yoga, fitness, art and so much more,(all included in the ticket price) as well as optional kayaking, cycling and massage. Have some great grown up time or go all “Famous Five” with the kids. The Big Retreat Wales takes place 25th - 28th May 2018. It’s an adventure packed with classes, activities, treats, eats, music and so much more. For more information please visit...

Chocolate and Strawberry tart
INGREDIENTS:
250g digestive biscuits 150g melted butter 250g milk chocolate 200g white chocolate 300ml double cream 200g fresh strawberries, sliced You will need a 12” flan or pie dish (ideally non-stick and loose bottomed) and a rolling pin
Love is in the air and with 14th February nearly upon us I’ve been reminiscing of Valentine’s days before the kids... remember booking a table way in advance to go for a romantic meal or planning an overnight getaway for 2. Now it’s a miracle if I remember to buy a card and I’m bowled over with a bunch of flowers from the petrol station. But despite the lack of romance there is of course more love than you ever imagined, because now your little ones are around for Valentines Day. And what better way to embrace the change than to get cooking with the kids! This Chocolate and Strawberry Tart is a nonbake dessert that is perfect for little hands to make. INSTRUCTIONS... In a large mixing bowl crush the biscuits into fine crumbs using the end of a rolling pin. This is a fantastic job for kids as they love the messiness of smashing biscuits to smithereens and sneakily eating them as they go. A Pour over the melted butter and mix until combined. Press into the pie dish to form a crust. A Pop in the fridge and chill until set.

A Break 200g of the milk chocolate into prices and melt by heating in short bursts of 10-15 seconds in the microwave, stirring in between. A When melted, mix in half of the double cream (150ml), stirring constantly until you have a thick and glossy mixture. A Pour over the biscuit base and top with a layer of sliced strawberries. Pop in the fridge to chill slightly while you make the white chocolate layer. A Repeat the above process with the white chocolate - melt in short bursts in the microwave and stir in the second half of the double cream. A Pour on top of the milk chocolate and strawberries and again, top with the rest of your sliced strawberries. A Melt the remaining 50g of milk chocolate and drizzle over the tart to decorate. A Chill for 1-2 hours or until set. Slice to serve.

Meet Laurie Archbold... f ro m P a i n t m e P re t t y l t d
Hi my name is Laurie Archbold, i'm 29 years old from Swansea and I have 2 little boys Ollie aged 7 and Otto aged 3. I am a beauty therapist based in Bynea llanelli and I have recently set up my own business, I named my buisness Paint Me Pretty ltd. I offer a range of treatments from nails, eyelash extensions and make up to waxing, massages and hot stone therapy. To get where i am now has taken a lot of my spare mummy free time. My husband passed away last year after battling cancer for three years, so it hasn't been the easiest year for me or my babies. He was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma just 3 weeks before my youngest was born. Being at home on my maternity leave and having to take my husband fortnightly to receive his chemotherapy wasn't what i dreamt my maternity would be like, I just wanted to be enjoying time with my new baby. I knew after my husband's terminal diagnosis in the summer of 2016 that I needed to start building a future for me and the boys. I was always so reliant on my husband so it was a scary reality to face alone. But i was determined to keep achieving my goals for myself and my boys. I just want to feel happy and accomplished in the life ive been given and to be a success for myself and my children. My business is currently based around my children as my youngest is just starting school, but i am very flexible and a lot of my clients come to my beauty room in the evenings but I'm open all day Monday Wednesday and Fridays and weekends on request. I have had a very busy Christmas in the short months I've been open, so its all very exciting. I have a lot of new ideas up my sleeve and i cant wait to get stuck into the new year.

Free childcare while you’re learning Welsh Bilingualism requires nurture and development, not to mention plenty of practice and hard work! However, once mastered, it is a life-long skill that can be as rewarding as it is practical. Attaining a second language (or even a third and fourth) enriches the life of the individual by: opening doors to new cultures, offering alternative outlooks with which to experience the world around them, and can also extend or enhance a sense of personal identity. Many parents aren’t able to offer the at home support in Welsh as a subject as they might with other curricular areas and this has been the driving force behind the Welsh for Parents courses as delivered by Learn Welsh – Swansea Bay Area. One of the main obstacles can often be childcare, so with this in mind, we will be offering a new course with free childcare on site. While you attend your lesson, children under five years old will be cared for by qualified childcare workers from Mudiad Meithrin. Parents of older children, between 6 and 12, will attend a different course and the children will be entertained by Menter Iaith youth workers, all for free! Taught at the Welsh centres, Ty’r Gwrhyd (Pontardawe) and Ty Tawe (Swansea city centre), the course covers simple elements such as: everyday greetings, asking questions, giving simple commands, and activities such as reading,

Why is dance so beneficial for all children, with and without special needs? Dance is a wonderful form of self-expression, exercise and creativity. Many children love to move to music, it makes them happy. Dance traditionally transcends barriers of race, class, age and gender. Therefore, surely dance classes should be accessible to all children regardless of their additional needs? Unfortunately, traditional dance teacher training does not equip dance teachers with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to teach children with additional needs. This is wrong, and upsetting, especially as dance can help children who have additional needs so much. I am in privileged position of being a professional trained ballet dancer and RAD registered ballet teacher, but, also a primary school teacher with experience of teaching children with special needs. The tiny toes teacher training programme fully equips our teachers to ensure children of all needs are catered for in our tiny toes classes. We deliver our programme to children with a variety of additional needs, including autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome aswell as delayed speech and understanding, very successfully and inclusively, on a weekly basis. Dance helps children develop a sense of body awareness, it helps with confidence and social skills. Dance allows for creative expression, for individuality and provides exercise and healthy living. It can help those who struggle with language by presenting an opportunity to communicate without words. Dance allows room for creative thinking and the acceptance of varied concepts, it stimulates intellect. It can foster a sense of peace. Dance allows you to express the inner you in a fun, energetic and engaging way that is non-judgemental. It is well researched by leading scientists that ‘activating the body more readily focusses and stimulates the mind’.

When children are engaged with the world around them, they are more prepared to interact with it, learn from it, contribute to it. Dance is a vehicle that stimulates this engagement. For children with special needs, such as sensory processing disorder, autism or other socio-emotional or physical difficulties, enjoyable activities might be few and far between. Children with these needs might have a list of symptoms, including poor attention, difficulty interacting with their peers, limited body awareness, or trouble being in social situations that might be over stimulating. Participating and expressing themselves through dance can help children with special needs to overcome these difficulties. Some children with sensory processing disorder or other similar difficulties may not understand where their bodies are in space or how to work their fine motor control muscles. They have motor delay. Through dance children become aware of the space around them and are given the opportunity to practise using their fine and gross motor control skills. Dance is not just a physical activity, it is also a form of creative expression. Some children with special needs have great difficulty expressing themselves or understanding emotions. Dance gives children a chance to break out of their shells and express their emotions in a nonthreatening and non-judgemental environment. Often during dance class children are required to dance or work in groups or pairs, they often give small demonstrations or performances in front of parents and their community, even in the dance class they are performing in front of each other. These activities also help children with special needs to gain confidence. Despite society’s acceptance and the numerous programmes and support available to children with special needs, there is still a stigma associated with special needs. What better reasons to ensure that dance class are open and accessible to all children, regardless of their additional needs? After all, don’t these children, more so than others, need more opportunities to experience non-judgemental environments? One should also note that dance classes provide a lovely environment in which children without
additional needs learn to accept and support others, whilst those with special needs can learn from their peers. A teacher is someone who helps children acquire knowledge, skills and values. We as dance teachers have a duty to provide dance experiences to children of all abilities and needs. It is our responsibly to learn, adapt and modify what we offer in order to allow every child to get the best benefit from dance.

With many authors becoming big names in the children’s book industry, and big blockbuster films, children’s poetry can go at times unnoticed. In fact we only have one prize in the UK given specially to a full collection of children’s poetry – The CLPE Poetry Award. For a single poem there is the Caterpillar Magazine’s the Caterpillar Poetry Prize and a few smaller competitions but compared to some of the big prizes in poetry for adults and the recent Nationwide adverts featuring poets, children’s poetry deserves better recognition. Enjoying the pleasure and benefits of children’s poetry is often underrated. Poetic imagery to delight the senses and stir the emotions. The importance of words to develop children’s vocabulary, and listening to short bursts of sounds with punctuated measured silences to engage and inspire children’s imaginations with quick easy pieces to digest. Poetry is ideal for getting children to start writing themselves. Poetry takes so many forms from narrative story rhymes to thoughtful reflection, the rhythms of raps or the lyrical abstract. Children get satisfaction at seeing a finished poem. It is a great way to encourage kids to write their own material and feel a sense of accomplishment from it. Here are a few to savour!
Title: A Great Big Cuddle: Poems for the Very Young Written by Michael Rosen and Illustrated by Chris Riddell Publisher: Walker Books A former CLPE Poetry Award winner, this large hardback book has a great selection of simple rhymes to grab little one’s attention. Savour the word play as you read aloud – lively and playful to tease and tickle young children’s imagination and teach the delight that can be had with exploring words. A great way to encourage them to think about individual words and their meaning. With the added bonus of when read aloud to make children think about how intonation can change meaning. And even young children can try their own poems, like Michael simply using one or two words.

Title: Poems to Perform Collection chosen by the Children’s Laureate, Julia Donaldson. Illustrated by Clare Melinsky. Publisher: MacMillian A lovely collection of beautifully illustrated poems including classics from Edward Lear and more contemporary voices. Poems to Peform explores the wordplay of alliteration, rhythm, repetition and rhyme. As a performer herself, Julia chose the poems in this book to give children the opportunity to read and share aloud the deliciousness of words and measured silence that bring poetry alive to the senses. A great addition to all family bookshelves as well as a resource with performance tips for teachers and groups. The highly interactive content including chants, tongue twisters and poetry conversations is sure to bring any English class alive!

Title: My Life as a Goldfish and Other Poems Poet: Rachel Rooney Publisher: Francis Lincoln Rachel is also a former CLPE Award winner with her first book – The Language of Cat. This is a great collection of gently clever poetry. Most are humorous with an understated humour some softly ironically in tone. From punchy little ditties such as Head Lice and the Parrot’s Complaint to fanatic imaginative descriptive Cheer Up about a smile, there is something for everyone in here.
Other Recommended books Look out for Roger McGough. One of our best loved poets, and the highly accomplished, uniquely style of Poet Laurate Carol Ann Duffy. Other great poets - Joseph Costello, John Hegley, Paul Cookson, Rachel Rooney, Wendy Cope, Chris White, Grace Nicholls, Wes Macgee, Benjamin Zephaniah, John Agard, John Foster and many more. Why not pick up a book and read a poem from your favourite poet today!

Dr Louise... What is Flu? It’s that time of year again when seasonal flu hits. Here is some information about flu, the symptoms associated with it & how to look after yourselves when it affects your family. Winter Influenza (Flu) is caused by one of the various strains of influenza virus & the prevailing type varies each year. In most people it is a self-limiting illness, which usually last 5-7 days. Most cases can be managed by resting at home & following simple advice, but in some cases it can be more serious. Flu is passed from person to person by droplets released when someone with the infection sneezes or coughs. You can also catch it by touching a surface where the virus has been deposited. Common symptoms are high temperature, aches & and pains in muscles & joints, sweating, nausea, a cough, headache, sore throat/sneezing. It can also cause lack of energy, loss of appetite & poor feeding. Sometimes a high temperature (fever) can result in a febrile convulsion (a seizure caused by the high temperature) which can be frightening for parents. When to seek medical help? The general advice is to seek medical advice at any time that you’re worried about yourself/child. However, certain warning signs should prompt you to seek help immediately as it may mean you have another illness or complications of Flu. The following symptoms are ‘red (serious) flags’: h Stiff neck, headache, dislike of bright lights. h Drowsiness and/or confusion. h Repeatedly vomiting. h Chest pains, coughing up blood or blood-stained phlegm, shortness of breath. h A rash particular if dark red spots develop that do not fade when pressed (a non-blanching rash).
How to manage symptoms at home. Paracetamol and/ or ibuprofen can lower your temperature, and also ease aches and pains. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Throat lozenges and saline nasal drops may be helpful to ease nose and throat symptoms. Carefully dispose of used tissues to prevent spread of infection. Wash hands regularly.
“Antibiotics are not effective against Flu. They kill bacteria not viruses. However, they may be necessary if you develop a bacterial complication (a secondary infection) from the Flu” If you are normally well then you are unlikely to develop complications. However, certain groups of people are more at risk of complications, i.e the elderly, those with chronic lung conditions such as asthma/cystic fibrosis, those with chronic medical conditions like heart/liver/ kidney problems/diabetes, those with poor immune systems & pregnant women regardless of how healthy they are. These groups of people are usually offered the annual flu vaccine. This article is not a substitute for advice from your own GP. Here’s wishing you all a happy, healthy winter.

This Month We Meet Victoria Issac from Little Bit Different
J
Tell us a little bit about yourself My name is Victoria Isaac. I live with my husband, our two children aged eighteen and eight and our chickens, rabbit and hamster. I love gardening, wandering around other peoples gardens and family days out. Oh and vintage china and glass.
Tell us about your business I create artisan candles. I pride myself on producing candles using high quality ingredients. My products must smell perfect, seven years of experience tells me when a scent will work or not. My range can now be found in shops all over Wales and England.
Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? Little Bit Different was launched at the end of 2010, but I first made candles for my own wedding. They were a huge success so when I was on a career break from the civil service following the birth of my youngest child I decided to make more and began selling them at local markets. I was passionate about creating a product I could be proud of while also having the flexibility to work around my children. This really helped during the three school runs a day years! I am increasingly driven by my need to always be developing new products and scents to keep my brand fresh and a "Little Bit Different".
What do you do to relax? Relax? What's that? I am lucky enough to have a big garden that always has something that needs doing. I love a bit of pruning and love nothing more than spending the day working in the garden while my son plays with the chickens. It isn't a secret that I also love going on holiday. It can be a few nights away in Britain or a week in the sun, I don't mind. I just love seeing new places. Luckily the rest of the family do to.
What has been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Going back to work when my career break ended. I knew I needed to keep the business going as it was growing fast but it wasn't at a point where I could sacrifice my salary. As I was able to work part time I did both for two years until I knew I could build the business enough to hand in my notice in 2015 after thirteen years.
Give us your top tips for a well-balanced home and work life? Remember what is important. If I need to take a day off I do, I am lucky that I can be flexible. I also plan my week each Monday morning, listing what has to be done, what I would like to get done and what is pretty likely to be moved to next week!
What is the one piece of advice you would give to other mums wanting to start their own business? Go for it but be practical. Don't take unnecessary risks and don't be tempted to spend more than you have to, you don't need to. You will get there without debt it just might take a bit longer.

TLC WALES | FOSTERING
TLC WALES CHANGES LIVES COULD YOU?
Could you foster? Do you have experience of children with disabilities or a background in care? If the answer is yes then contact TLC Wales. When J was born he didn’t appear to develop at the normal rate and had difficulty feeding. His parents were told he had suffered brain damage. They were told it was unlikely he would reach his first birthday and would need 24 hour care. His parents were unable to cope and meet his needs so J had to be placed in foster care. It was difficult to find foster carers who would look after a baby with unknown needs and a short life expectancy.
ABOUT TLC WALES TLC Wales specialise in fostering children with disabilities and complex medical needs and due to the high level of specialist carers they were able to find a suitable match for baby J. Carers who offered him more than just a place to live. J began to thrive, giving hope for his future.
He has been with his foster carers for 7 years now, he is part of their family and they couldn’t imagine life without him. He enjoys life and his smile warms everyone’s heart. TLC focuses on the best outcomes for children whatever they might be. They are hugely proud of what they do but without specialist foster carers they would be unable to provide care and support and J’s story could have been very different. They need short term, long term and respite carers for sibling groups, parent and child as well as solo placements. They offer first class training, 24/7 support and a generous allowance. If you have any questions or are interested in fostering please call TLC on 01269 846371.
Can you change someone’s life? Could you offer a home to a child or young person with disabilities? We are looking for carers who can offer a home to Sibling Groups, Parent & Child and Solo Placements.
We offer excellent training, 24/7 support and a generous allowance. Palliative, respite, short and long term carers required
