There are many different reasons why parents bring their children to us for extra help. Sometimes the child has not quite grasped some concepts that have been taught, and they need to have them reinforced and spend time practising them. Other times they are lacking confidence in some aspect and need the extra support in order to grasp things. Whatever the difficulty, we aim to approach it in a caring and effective way, in order to put the smile back on the child’s face – and on the parents’ faces, too. You can be totally confident that your child is being taught by qualified teachers who have been chosen, not only for their experience, but also for their desire to help the children. When the pupils know that the teachers have the child’s best interests at heart, they are always happy to try their best – and when they do that, they start to see themselves improving, and their confidence shoots up! Wonderful! Each pupil is viewed as an individual, so each one receives a personalised lesson each week, exactly tailored to their particular needs. The Centre is run by Sue and Warwick – a husband and wife team – who have both taught for many years and are passionate about providing an excellent service.

However this is especially so in Stepheni’s case as she only moved to Wales in 2008, leaving her native country, her husband and her children behind. Committed to making the most of the opportunities available to her she embarked upon her studies with dogged determination. Originally studying at the Action Resource Centre (ARC) in Blaenymaes, Swansea, Stepheni exceled as a student and decided to enrol on the Part-time BA (Honours) Humanities Degree.
(Honours) Degree in Humanities to students across south west Wales. This unique six-year programme is available at Singleton Park Campus and Hendrefoelan Campus in Swansea and in community venues throughout Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire, offering people the opportunity to do a degree on their doorstep.
Reunited with her family, studying Sociology and Psychology in community venues in Swansea and at Swansea University Singleton Campus, Stepheni successfully juggled her degree with full-time work. Following graduation in July she plans to study for a MA in Development and Human Rights with a view to empowering and advocating for those who are marginalised, struggling or who want to start afresh after going through difficult circumstances. Her dream job would be working for the United Nations.
Students choose 2 subjects from a variety including History, English Literature, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and many more. They study during the day and/or evening for 2 hours for each subject for 20 weeks. The programme is delivered through traditional face-to-face teaching in small informal settings with a range of resources available to support students before and during the programme. Students can also access free, confidential and impartial educational, careers advice and guidance.
Stepheni believes the degree has developed her skills, knowledge and confidence: “studying was not just about me, it was about everyone around me. The degree is flexible and versatile and can open doors for you. The DACE system helps you achieve; I cannot say enough about the staff. They really want you to succeed and do well. When something good happens to you like DACE you just can’t keep quiet about it!” The Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE) at Swansea University offers its Part-time BA
Formal qualifications are not required to study on this programme; the degree is aimed at adults from all walks of life and attracts those who want to study at university level, change career direction and those who want to consider new opportunities and meet new people. The Gower Show
W
The Gower Show is a traditional one-day agricultural show and will be held on Sunday 7th August 2016. The Show, now in its 99th year, is held in the stunning grounds of Penrice Castle Park near Oxwich Bay, which must be one of the finest locations for such an event in the country! A full programme of displays and events will take place throughout the day. Visiting Gower Show for the first time, and one of the highlights for this year is a chance to see spectacular stunts and amazing tricks performed by the 3SIXTY Bicycle Stunt Team. New for this year is an exhibition of traditional country crafts and skills, and the opportunity to talk to the people who keep these old traditional skills alive. These are just some of the events planned; theres a lot more happening on the showground throughout the day. The Gower Show is very much a traditional agriculture event; it is a chance to see that farming is still so very important to our area. There is a fantastic livestock section with many different breeds of cattle, sheep and pigs all competing in their different classes, and it is a chance to get a really close look at some of the finest examples of livestock. Of course horses, of all breeds, large and small will be showing in the main horse ring too. The competition rings will be full all day, with competitors hoping, that this year, they will win the ultimate title in their section of “Gower Show Supreme Champion 2016”. Come along, join in, and celebrate the countryside at Penrice Castle Park on Gower Show Day.
hat better way to relax during the summer, than reading a book, whether lazing on holiday, travelling on a car journey or curled up on the sofa during a wetter day. This summers reading list has something for everyone to enjoy! Title: Do you remember? Written by Helen Docherty and Illustrated by Mark Beech Publisher: Faber and Faber A charming picture book depicting some of the first moments in a child’s early years. Told lovingly through the eyes of a mother, a strong message of reassurance underlies the narrative; “Everything you’ve ever wanted to do, you’ve always found a way to do it.” Both the story and the illustrations have a classic feel to them. Title: Pass it on Written and illustrated by Sophy Wenn Publisher: Puffin Books Brightly coloured illustrations in an offbeat colour scheme complement the simple uplifting message about spreading joy around. Pass it on embraces child friendly exuberance in finding delight in the everyday things such as chuckles and sharing them around. Reminder to count your blessings even on the gloomiest of days.
Title: The Odd Socks Written by Michelle Robinson and Rebecca Ashdown Publisher: Holiday House Hugely imaginative and funny tale about a pair of romantically attached socks who get separated and seemed destined for the bin, but are saved with a surprise twist at the end. Sprinkled with highly amusing rhyming word play, this off beat picture book is sure to entertain most children. Title: Too Many Carrots Written and illustrated by Katy Hudson Publisher: Curious Fox This book works on many levels – the innovative device of the overflowing carrots that Rabbit asks his animal friends to look after, portrays the message without preaching that sharing can reap the best rewards of all. It’s also a great way to present different types of animal homes. Detailed and interesting illustrations. The carrots look superb in their orange splendor. Other illustrated books also worth putting your feet up for are Slug needs a hug by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross (Andersen), The Royal Baby’s Big Red Bus by Martha Mumford and Ada Grey (Bloomsbury), Freddie Mole, Lion tamer by Alexander McCallSmith and Kate Hindley (Bloomsbury) and Nibbles: The Book Monster by Emma Yarlett (Little Tiger).

onstipation is a common problem for children, but first, let’s clarify what is normal. There is great variation in childrens bowels; each child is different and habit will depend on age & diet.
Babies open their bowels anything from several times per day to once every few days. Frequency is not important, but it’s important that stools are soft & easily passed. Note that babies *do* go red in the face or have a typical *poo face* & this doesn’t automatically signify constipation. Breast-fed babies tend to pass runnier, mustard yellow stools, often after each feed, because breast milk is better digested than formula milk. Breast-fed babies seldom become constipated. Formula-fed babies often open their bowels once a day as the stools are bulkier. As babies are weaned onto solids, their stools will change in frequency, colour, consistency & smell, and will depend on what you feed him/her. Anything from three times a day to once every other day is common & normal. Less often than that suggests constipation is likely. It is a change in what is normal for your child that suggests a problem. Constipation means passing less frequent, hard, sometimes painful stools, often needing to strain. Other symptoms are tummy ache, poor appetite, feeling off colour, feeling sick, fidgeting as if needing to go to the toilet, looking unhappy. The most common type of constipation is ‘Idiopathic’ meaning ‘of unknown cause.’ This article focusses on this category. ‘Secondary constipation’ means due to an underlying disease or condition, and is uncommon. Your GP will ask you lots of questions & examine your child to ascertain if the problem is serious or not. He/she will know the important points in the story to look out for which might indicate an underlying condition/illness.
Various factors may contribute to (idiopathic) constipation developing, or make it worse. These include diet, stoolholding & emotional factors. If your child has too little fibre in his/her diet, or doesn’t drink enough fluids, then stools become harder, drier & difficult to pass. Constipation may be caused by emotional upset, e.g. change in routine or surroundings, & potty training falls into this category. Stool-holding means the child has the feeling of needing to poo, but tries to ignore the desire & holds on to the stool. The longer the child resists it, the bigger the stool gets, & when the child eventually has to go, the large stool is difficult to pass & is often painful. This may lead to a vicious cycle. Treatment of constipation: medical treatment with laxatives is needed if the bout of constipation doesn’t settle within a few days. ‘Movicol Paediatric Plain’ is commonly used first-a type of laxative that pulls fluid into the bowel (osmotic), keeping stools soft. It is mixed into water to make a drink. Lactulose ( syrup)is another type of osmotic laxative. A stimulant ( stimulates bowel to pass stools out) laxative is added to an osmotic if the former isn’t sufficient alone. Laxatives are normally continued for several weeks after normal bowel habit has been established, usually in gradually reducing doses according to stool consistency & frequency. This is called maintenance treatment. In about 1 in 3 children suffering from constipation, it will become a long-term ( chronic) problem. In addition to medication & dietary measures to treat constipation, the following tips may be useful. Encourage a regular toilet habit, e.g. after breakfast. Allow plenty of time & don’t rush your child. A reward system is sometimes useful, using stickers, stars, small treats. Praise your child for passing a stool appropriately but do not punish accidents. Try to keep calm over the issue.
Dietary Management of Constipation By Varsha Nagaraj Paediatric Dietitian
21
| www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk
Once constipation is diagnosed, a dietitian’s role is to ensure the diet is balanced in term of nutrients and ensuring there is adequate fibre and fluid to facilitate regular bowel movements. Having a healthy, balanced diet is paramount in maintaining a healthy digestive system and managing the symptoms of constipation. Children’s diets from the age of five should be based on the principles of the UK’s eatwell plate.
Dietary fibre There are two main kinds of fibre in the diet. Soluble and Insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre is found in:
• grains such as oats, barley and rye; • fruits like bananas and apples; • beans and pulses, like baked beans, lentils, chick peas and kidney beans; • root vegetables like carrots and potatoes.
Soluble fibre dissolves in water and forms a gel in the gut. It helps to keep stools soft, making them easier to pass, which may help prevent or treat constipation.
Insoluble fibre is found in:
• cereal foods like high fibre breakfast cereals (eg. Weetabix, Bran Flakes etc); • wholemeal breads and pasta, brown rice and other wholegrains; • vegetables, potatoes with skins; • nuts and seeds.
Fibre is especially important for digestive health - insoluble fibre bulks up stools and makes waste move through the digestive tract more quickly, which is better for the gut and can help to prevent constipation. Fluids- It’s important to keep drinking, especially water. It encourages the passage of waste through your digestive system and helps soften stools. Fibre acts like a sponge, absorbing water. Without fluid, the fibre can’t do its job effectively. Suitable fluids would be: water, diluted squash and juice (at mealtimes only).
Tips for parents... 1.
Maintaining a food and fluid and stool diary is useful to identify patterns and changes. 2. Encourage 6 – 8 drinks per day for toddlers and young children. 100-120ml/drink is recommended for younger children and 120-150ml/drink for school age children. 3. More fluid may be needed in hot weather and after a lot of physical activity. 4. Excessive milk consumption has been linked with constipation. Filling up on milk limits appetite for other foods thereby limiting dietary fibre intake. 5. Excessive drinking of juice can limit appetite for food. 6. Increase fibre content gradually. 7. Adequate fluids to accompany increase in fibre intake. 8. Offer 5 child size portions of fruit and vegetables, a portion is the size of the child’s hand. 9. Include fruit and vegetables in meals and snacks 10. Avoid too much fibre in the form of wholemeal pasta, brown rice and bran as this may reduce the absorption of some minerals like iron.

Kip McGrath Gorseinon has moved!
S
ince opening our first tuition centre in Gorseinon over 11 years ago, Kip McGrath Education Centres has provided after school tuition in maths and English for students aged 4 – 18. And, we’re pleased to announce that we have moved to a bigger and brighter centre on Gorseinon High Street! Following an extensive refurbishment, the new education centre is now up and running! The centre is managed by owners Claire and Scott Peters.
The emphasis is on learning in a fun, secure environment and the new centre is able to cater for a wide variety of students – from those who are behind at school to those who want to be challenged further. At Kip McGrath we offer affordable, expert tuition and we pride ourselves on giving a unique service to parents. We offer a free educational assessment. This enables us to establish exactly where a child is in terms of achievement in English or maths and to determine whether tutoring will help. If parents decide to engage our help, each child has an individual learning programme prepared for them. The Kip McGrath experience begins the moment a student enters the
Centre. Bright colours, comfy chairs and not like school! “Our parents want to give their children the best possible opportunities to succeed, and our new centre can provide them with a motivating, relaxed and positive environment whilst focusing on their individual learning needs.” said Claire. Kip McGrath Gorseinon is now located at 30A High Street, Gorseinon, Swansea, SA4 4BX – opposite Home Bargains! For more information, or to book a free assessment for your child, call Claire on (01792) 891144 or visit www.kipmcgrath.co.uk.
“We still offer the same excellent service which has helped thousands of local children build their confidence and boost motivation in maths and English.” says Claire, a qualified teacher, trained in the Kip McGrath method.
Ingredients Sponge: • 120g self-raising flour • 120g caster sugar • 120g butter or baking spread softened • 2 large free range egg • 1 tablespoons milk • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • ¼ teaspoon baking powder Topping • Nice quality strawberry jam, preserve, conserve • 150ml double cream • Half teaspoon vanilla extract • Half tablespoon icing sugar • Strawberries, halved or quartered lengthways • Icing sugar to dust
Make sure you have a clean dry surface and wash your hands. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees centigrade. Put all the sponge ingredients into a bowl and gently mix together until smooth. Do not beat the mixture but mix thoroughly. Spoon into a regular sized lined sponge cake tin for a larger gateau, or use several smaller tins for individual cakes, as in the picture. Bake at 175 degrees for approx. 25 mins. Remove and cool on a wire rack. Put the cream, icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl and whip until the cream can stand in peaks but still relatively soft. If your sponges are quite deep cut in half and place on a plate with the cut side up. Spread a generous amount of jam gently over the sponge. Place a large dollop of cream in the centre and smooth to nearly but not quite the edges, so you can still see some jam. Arrange the strawberries in the top. Repeat for all sponges and then dust with icing sugar before serving (with extra strawberries of course).

PORT EYNON & HORTON
Huge array of magical marine life to be discovered.

CASWELL Look out for the sea slugs here! Beadlet anemones and blennies lock heads with shore crabs, edible crabs and velvet fiddler crabs can all be found here. CHECK THE TIDE TIMES – you don’t want to be trapped and equally you don’t want to arrive and find that the time you have it’s high tide and the kids won’t be able to get on the beach.
Turn over seaweed to see what you can find - bring sea mats, sea squirts or sponges into view. You may also find the white swirls of tube worms such as keel worms.
South Wales beaches are a treasure trove of discovery and adventure for all those wanting to explore and come up close and personal with magnifi cent marine life. Rock pooling is exciting and – best of all – yes, it’s free! No need to wait for a sunny day, either; if it’s a bit dull, put on your wellies and start discovering.
1
BRACELET BAY
Pick up rocks carefully and you may see some crabs scuttle out. Look out for edible crabs, which often look like pebbles. Beware of the red-eyed blue velvet swimming crab though, as it can nip. Don’t forget your net and bucket which will let you check out your rock pool creatures a little bit closer. Remember to let them go again where you found them after a short time. Place the bucket in the water and see what swims in or push it gently through the water to scoop up a critter you’ve found.
Bracelet Bay is a lovely stretch of sand and pebble that is usually quieter than other local beaches. Children can spend hours searching for hermit crabs, sea anemones and shrimps in the sculpture-like forms of the rock pools. These limestone formations are the reason Bracelet Bay has been designated a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Look closely and you will see the shapes of ancient fossils indented into the rocks.

“Both of my daughters attend the Children’s Room and I am about to start my third child in the baby room. The staff go above and beyond to make both you and your child feel relaxed during the first few weeks, they are compassionate, friendly and proactive and I am confident in the knowledge that my children are well looked after. The environment is relaxed and it is clear that a lot of care and effort go into the range of activities undertaken every day. My children immensely enjoy their time at nursery, and go in without so much as a backwards glance. They have flourished in the Montessori way of teaching, and have grown to be confident and independent children. I would not hesitate to recommend the nursery to anyone” - A. Stewart

olourstrings is a fun but structured approach to enjoying music, the classes move quickly but there is a structure that is unchanging developing the inner ear, pulse, rhythm, pitch and voice and encourages good listening. Most of us have read how important music is for the IQ and development of the brain.

Children enjoy the movement and slightly crazy songs as well as the more familiar traditional ones. Every child is catered for and I have found it to be a wonderful way to stimulate and encourage children with all sorts of learning difficulties. I have experienced children jumping for the first time and kids who find communication difficult will often sing in every part of the class. It is wonderful for language development even for those who have profound hearing problems. In musical terms the development of a good ear will make further music making easier and much more rewarding. However, it is not the only motivation behind the classes. Paramount is building children’s confidence and self-esteem. Within weeks of starting the classes, children, even the shyest, are taking part in and enjoying all the activities. They sing in front of their friends, they play the circle games, which are wonderful for socializing and they are encouraged to contribute to the direction of other activities. Last of all the children are encouraged to listen to music at the end of each session. Children, as young as 16 months, will lie down with their cuddly toys and listen to 2-3 minutes of music in silence. One school teacher has called it miracle music. Not only is it that the children have become used to being calm and still so that they can listen, especially useful for frazzled teachers and parents!

“The contribution that Colourstrings makes to early years education has been invaluable…the part that Colourstrings will play in the future is of vital importance to the cultural life of this country” Nicolas Chisholm, Headmaster, The Yehudi Menhuin School. “Colourstrings is an exceptional method in the training of young musicians and I have yet to experience a more successful approach to the development of musicianship, aural awareness and solid musical principles in the very young.” Derek Aviss,Trinity College of Music. “Colourstrings is simply an outstanding education in itself. The founders and teachers have recognised that fundamentally all human beings are born musical, and that this natural ability can be easily harnessed for the benefit of society and the individual. Every child going through colourstrings acquires an acute ear and makes rapid progress on their chosen instrument., as well as singing in tune and performing confidently in public. The Colourstrings method is making a significant contribution to the lives of hundreds of young musicians “ Jonathan Haswell, Producer, BBC Classical Music TV and Colourstrings Parent.

Never give up on your dreams...
M
y name is Ceri Hardman and I am the manager of an indoor play centre in Neath called Kidz Korner. Several years ago I had the ambition to open the play centre. It took many years of hard work and determination before I could finally take the leap to start my own business making a dream become reality. Kidz Korner has been open now for just over three and a half years and I was fortunate to have the backing of The Prince’s Trust. The Prince’s Trust is a charity that helps young people get into employment, education or training. They also help young people to reach their goals with setting up their own business. I was able to attend an enterprise course with them where they looked over and helped me make amendments to my business plan so that I could receive financial support from them. I started trading as a limited company in January 2013 and at present I currently employ nine part-time members of staff and one full-time member. I still continue to receive support from The Prince’s Trust. The Prince’s Trust provided me with a business mentor who I can turn to for help, advice and guidance with my business. In February 2015 I was absolutely delighted to be appointed a Young Ambassador for the Trust. Being a young ambassador I attend many different events and take part on enterprise courses. This allows me to offer assistance, support and guidance to other young people hoping to start up a business. On the 17th May 2016 I had the honour and privilege to be invited to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace hosted by His Royal Highness Prince Charles to mark the 40th year anniversary of The Princes Trust. The Garden Party brought together people from all over Britain that play a part in the Trust. Many celebrities are ambassadors to the Trust and they attended the Garden Party as well. It was a surreal experience that was outstanding and unforgettable. I was fortunate enough to meet many celebrities and even more overwhelmed when I met Prince Charles himself. He spoke to me asking several questions including how I was involved with the Trust. I explained that I had set up my own business with the help of the Trust. Prince Charles was interested to know the location of my business and how well it was doing. I explained that I had succeeded in what I had set out to achieve and now I am a Young Ambassador so that I can give back to the Trust helping other young people. Prince Charles congratulated me on my achievements and stated how proud he was of how far I have come with my business. That moment in time will stay with me always and words can not describe how elated I felt. People often ask me if I had the chance to go back and start again would I have opened Kidz Korner and it is always a very tough question to answer. Starting my own business is probably the hardest thing I have done and it still presents challenges. It can push me to my limits and can cause many sleepless nights. However I am extremely

fortunate to receive endless support from my family and friends and they are one of the reasons I keep pushing forward. I am able to turn to them for advice, talk through new ideas and have honest opinions from them. Another reason is seeing the children’s faces light up when they come to play in the centre and to hear them say how much fun they have there. When they have a birthday party how much they enjoy with all their friends and family makes all the hard work worthwhile. I continue to keep up the hard work, striving to make Kidz Korner a safe, clean and friendly play centre for all to enjoy. Starting your own business can seem like such a daunting task but I urge anyone with the drive, determination and ambition to go for it. I would advise all young people who would like to start up their own business to contact The Prince’s Trust for extra support and advice.

ABOUT... The new family - run operation is the brain child of two Tata Steel Workers, after hearing about impending closure of the site. Located in SA1 Business Park and furnished with 85 trampolines, Limitless Trampoline Park isn't only restricted to kids usage. There will be toddler mornings where parent and child are welcome to try out games and bounces in the 16,000 square foot building. Fitness classes will also be available during the day - excellent news with trampolining being described as ‘the most efficient, effective form of exercise yet devised by man’. A ten minute bounce is the same as a half hour run! Limitless will also host birthday parties and has two private party rooms with space for 35 guests. For those who prefer the quieter life, the mezzanine floor will be home to the No Limits Cafe, serving home-made meals, snacks, Polar Krush iced drinks and hot drinks, where you will be able to watch your friends and family jump til their hearts are content!
