ll, All our Multi-Sports coaches are fully CRB/DBS checked and display a wide range of professional qualifications in teaching and coaching. Our coaches believe that at the heart of their role lies the principle that all children deserve the opportunity to broaden their experience of sport and, most of all, enjoy taking part in physical activity. This compliments our ExploreSport Scheme, which runs during the Holiday Camps.

These camps are priced at between £30 and £40, lasting from 2 to 3 days. Visit Multi-Sports.co.uk for more information.

Academy for Confidence

The Go Girl Academy was set up by Wenda James-Rowe in 2013. Wenda is passionate about helping girls to reach their true potential, to love the skin they are in and to embrace who they are. Life is particularly tough for girls growing up as they face so many pressures and social media has a big part to play. The GGA helps and empowers girls to celebrate their uniqueness and to lead happy fulfilling lives. We deliver holiday camps and workshops for girls aged 10-16 to help promote confidence, self esteem and well being. Our camps include a range of fun, inspirational sessions such as dance, yoga, mindfulness, positivity sessions, skincare and make up. We also have inspirational role model guest speakers from all walks of life. Wenda is running camps across Swansea ,Cardiff and South Wales this Summer. For more details check out www.TheGoGirlAcademy.co.uk Join us for a Summer of fun at Mumbles Cricket Club Aug 16th & 17th.

Is your child having some difficulties in Spelling, Handwriting or Maths? Do they get upset when they have to do homework? Or maybe your child is making satisfactory progress but wants to achieve higher grades? There are many different reasons why parents bring their children to us for extra help. Sometimes the child has not quite grasped some concepts that have been taught, and they need to have them reinforced and spend time practising them. Other times they are lacking confidence in some aspect and need the extra support in order to grasp things. Whatever the difficulty, we aim to approach it in a caring and effective way, in order to put the smile back on the child’s face – and on the parents’ faces, too. You can be totally confident that your child is being taught by qualified teachers who have been chosen, not only for their experience, but also for their desire to help the children. When the pupils know that the teachers have the child’s best interests at heart, they are always happy to try their best – and when they do that, they start to see themselves improving, and their confidence shoots up! Wonderful! Each pupil is viewed as an individual, so each one receives a personalised lesson each week, exactly tailored to their particular needs. The Centre is run by Sue and Warwick – a husband and wife team – who have both taught for many years and are passionate about providing an excellent service. www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk |

Are You Concerned about Your PainKilllers?

Y

ou cannot escape the press about concerns about ‘painkillers’ and the comparisons being made with the United States where they are trying to manage a crisis in opioid use. So, what are opioids and should be worried about them over here in the United Kingdom? Opioids are pain-reducing medications derived from papaver somniferum, the opium poppy. We know them better by drug names such as codeine, tramadol, morphine and oxycodone. We have used drugs like morphine for hundreds of years, originally as opium. They have been known to relieve pain but also to cause sedation, euphoria and addiction for as long as they have been in use. The North American opioid crisis has been ongoing for over 10 years although it has gained pace and publicity particularly in the last five. The UK is not America. The NHS, gives us a degree of protection due to policies and laws around prescribing. It is also worth noting that currently, there is no evidence that addiction to prescribed opioids is greater than to illicit drugs in the UK. That does not mean we should be complacent however. So what’s the problem? Why are we seeing articles in the national press talking about ‘deadly painkillers’ and that ‘GPs are handing them out like sweets’?

Headlines like that are not entirely helpful other than for getting people’s attention. We are risking chasing the wrong problem. Addiction is possible and it happens – lets not pretend otherwise. But addiction is complex and it doesn’t happen just because someone has been given a strong opioid on prescription. For those people who develop genuine drug seeking, harmful behaviours, we must provide timely support and treatment. What we have in the UK is almost certainly an overuse of analgesics. Not least because we understand more and more that drugs are of only limited help for managing persistent, non-cancer pain. We also know now that opioids like codeine and morphine only reduce pain

27

and allow people to function better (to do more) in 10% of cases. For many more people, opioids cause them to live in a fog; their interactions with those around them is affected; they make them feel tired and depressed – all common symptoms of persistent pain. Knowing what is caused by the condition and what is the drug becomes harder over time. If you have been taking opioid-type analgesics but you still have pain or feel they are less effective now then they used to be; what can you do? It might sound strange but often, the best thing to try is to reduce them and if you can, stop for a while. It is a good idea to speak to your community pharmacist or a doctor or pharmacist in your GP practice before you make any changes. It can feel frightening even just thinking about reducing your medicines when you have pain. Even if they don’t work very well, you might be scared about how the pain might be without them. However, if you take away a small amount each time and take a few weeks between each change, many people do not report any major problems. You may need to change the strength of the tablets or capsules you use, to help you make changes. So, do we have an American-style opioid epidemic here in the UK? No, we don’t appear to at the moment. Do we have a problem with opioids? Yes, we do but we can all do something about it. If you want to talk about your medicines, ask a medicines expert – ask a pharmacist. More advice about managing pain is available from the NHS choices website http://www. nhs.uk/Livewell/Pain/Pages/Painhome.aspx A really useful source of support for living well with longterm pain is the Pain Toolkit, written by Pete, who has had back pain for over 30 years himself. The toolkit and much more information is available at www.paintoolkit.org

The Best Memories in Are

Made

the

kitchen

Family bonding can take place anywhere, but when it takes place in the kitchen, something magical happens; long-lasting memories are created and traditions are made.

One of the fondest memories we have growing up tend to be in the heart of the home, whether cooking desserts or pies with Grandma in the school holidays or baking chocolate chip cookies with Mum on the weekend. We remember everything from making mistakes or burning batches to laughing with flour on our noses and the triumphant feeling of creating a masterpiece and it is these memories that stay with us. These memories that make our kitchens our happy place and the core of where we re-create these memories with our children. When it comes to passing this tradition on, we then get to create memories from the adult’s perspective! Teaching recipes instead of learning, creating new recipes, being open to making a sticky mess and being goofy and silly and carefree. With a whole noisy kitchen full of aromas and giggles and yummy bakes at the end of it, there is something special about food that brings a family together. The one downside? Being the adult, you’re now the one that is left to clean up when the children disappear! That is the way though after all. Family roles come around full circle, yet the memories made are just as special.

What are your childhood kitchen memories? Share them with us: Enterprise2k Enterprise2000UK

Add the chocolate chips at this stage if you’re making chocolate chip cookies. Once you get a doughy texture, add the egg and knead it with your hands. Spread some butter onto a baking tray. Take some of the dough, roll it into a ball and then flatten it a little on the tray. Keep each dough ball small and spread them out evenly as they spread during baking. Bake in the oven at 160o, gas 3 for 10-20 mins. They’re ready when the edges are a bit golden.

that these changes are less likely to return to normal by themselves. You will probably need some treatment and this will happen at a colposcopy unit.

SMEAR TES TS

Last month’s topic was cervical screening. In this second part, I’ll explain what the results of the cervical screening test mean. The laboratory which reports the cervical screening results ( below) will also determine the followup & whether if any treatment is needed. Some women simply need recalling for another smear in the normal 3-5 years. Some need a repeat cervical smear at a shorter time interval. Some need referral to a colposcopy ( below) clinic for further examination of the cervix +/- treatment.

Normal About 93 in 100 routine cervical screening tests are normal. You will be sent a letter inviting you for another one after 3-5 years, depending on your age. A normal result means you have a very low chance of developing cervical cancer. It is not a guarantee that cervical cancer will not occur. Inadequate This means that no result can be given because insufficient cells were present for examination under the microscope. About 2 tests in every 100 are inadequate & need to be repeated. Abnormal: abnormal cells are found in some women (about 6 in 100 tests are reported as abnormal)There are varying degrees of abnormal (below) & this does not mean cancer in the vast majority of cases. Abnormal cells indicate that cervical cancer may develop in the future, if ignored & left untreated.

Colposcopy is a more detailed examination of the neck of the womb. Just like at a smear test, a speculum is inserted into the vagina to visualise the cervix. Then the doctor puts on a pair of special glasses with a magnifier to enable him/ her to examine the cervix in more detail. A liquid is used to paint the cervix which shows up the abnormal cells. During colposcopy it is usual to take a small piece of tissue from the cervix (biopsy) to make a more detailed assessment of the cells. The whole procedure takes about 15 mins. 4)Invasive neoplasia(=growth of new cells) is a more serious abnormality which shows in less than 1 test in 1,000. Invasive neoplasia suggests cervical cancer might be present. This is not proven until a sample a biopsy has been taken at colposcopy. Glandular neoplasia is another significant abnormality that can be seen. It suggests that there is an abnormality in the lining of the womb, rather than on the cervix. This is because glandular cells (cells lining the womb) are different to the ones normally found on the cervix. Glandular neoplasia again does not necessarily mean cancer, but cancer needs to be excluded. You will probably need to have a colposcopy and may need to have a small camera passed into the womb (called hysteroscopy). The smear test may also look for human papillomavirus (HPV), a type of wart virus that can be passed on by having sex. HPV testing is becoming increasingly important because over 99 in 10 cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV. Therefore, if it is not present, the chances of getting cervical cancer are vanishingly small. Since 2008 in the UK, school-aged girls are vaccinated against HPV, with the aim of reducing the number of cervical cancer cases. It is important to point out that most infections with HPV will clear completely from the body within two years. This means that most women who are infected with HPV do not develop cancer. Across the UK, if you have had treatment for abnormal cells after an abnormal smear, your next smear test will be automatically tested for HPV. Knowing whether HPV is present or absent helps to determine how you should be treated and screened from that point on. This test - the combination of the smear looked at under the microscope with the HPV test - is called a "test of cure".

1) Borderline is the mildest abnormality seen on cervical screening. About 3-4 in 100 results are borderline. Whilst the cells are not quite normal, they are not abnormal enough to fall into the categories mentioned below. You will usually be offered a repeat smear in 6mths.

Can I have a smear test during my period? If you start a period on the day your period starts, then it’s best to reschedule it. There may be too much blood and mucus on the brush and too few cells from the cervix will be removed, interfering with the result.

2)Mild dyskaryosis (dyskaryosis is a medical term used to describe abnormal cells seen on cervical screening) is a common abnormal result. About 2 tests in every 100 show mild abnormalities of the cells of the neck of the womb. Most of these changes go back to normal without any treatment. You will usually be offered a repeat smear in 6mths.

If your smear test is due and and you are pregnant, this should be delayed until at least 12 weeks after your baby is born. This gives the cervix a chance to recover from pregnancy and childbirth. Tests performed earlier are more likely to be inadequate.

3) Moderate or severe dyskaryosis shows up in even fewer women. About 1 in every 100 smear tests shows either one of these abnormalities. If your test shows moderate or severe dyskaryosis it is still very unlikely that you will have cervical cancer. The main difference is

39

If you have had an abnormal smear & have been invited for colposcopy, it is important you attend, even if you are pregnant. Colposcopy can be safely carried out on pregnant women. As long as no major problems are found, treatments will probably be delayed until after you have had your baby. Sometimes repeat colposcopy may be done later in pregnancy. It is possible to give treatment to the cervix, if it is essential, whilst you are pregnant.

Picture Book Title: Knock Knock Dinosaur Writer and Illustrator: Caryl Hart and Nick East Publisher: Hodder Children’s Books A zany, punchy story filled full of brightly colourful dinosaurs. When one small boy receives the Dino Deliveries ordered by his mum, he is eager to play with his new dinosaur set. The only problem is that his mum didn’t read the small print, and now there are real life sized ones rampaging round the house. They’re having a great time but they’re causing destruction and mayhem, breaking the furniture and causing mess. Oh dear! And now out of the window, Mum is spotted returning home. Luckily the dinosaurs are good at doing the housework and soon have the place spick and span. The energetic rhyme zips along with a catchy pace, and is sure to engage and entertain young readers. A real smiler!

Picture Book Title: My Very Own Space Writer and illustrator: Pippa Goodhart and Rebecca Crane Publisher: Flying Eye Books Rabbit draws a line on the ground that no one can cross. The space is

his, all his! He can do anything he likes in his own space. He repeatedly insists that no one but no one is allowed over the line. But someone else disagrees and in they come. Then all the other rabbits follow. And what fun they have playing there. A highly imaginative story with beautiful striking simplicity told in just under one hundred words. The illustrations are drawn in an effective colour palette. At times it’s good to have time on your own but we all need our friends for sharing and fun!

Creative Non-Fiction: The AntiBoredom Book of Brilliant outdoor things to do. Writer and illustrator: Andy Seed and Scott Garrett. Publisher: Bloomsbury It’s time to turn off the TV, switch off the computer and go outside for an amazing time! Discover for yourself the delights of nature in your own back garden, and learn to appreciate our wildlife in its natural habitats. This book will ignite an interest in the simple pleasures, and having an adventure in your own town. You can also get creative with a range of things to make and do for the outdoors to spark imaginations. Thrown into the mix are lots of quirky facts, silly lists and games to play. A book packed with interesting and fun stuff that you can revisit time after

time. And once the summer is over, there are ideas for winter too.

Novel: Beaky Malone – Worst Ever School Trip Writer and Illustrator: Barry Hutchison and Katie Abbey Publisher: Little Tiger The second hilarious book about Beaky Malone. Beaky’s life changed after he’d stepped inside Madame Shirley’s truth telling machine. Now he can’t utter a single lie no matter how much he wants to. Unfortunately it seems that telling the truth gets you into more trouble than telling lies, and neither can he keep secrets. The school trip to Thrill land doesn’t quite go as planned. The class ends up at the deadly dull Learning Land. With rides such as the Bug’s Eye View and the Gravity Drop, and the pesky, menacing Clumso the Clown the attraction is not a great barrel of laughs. And Beaky also has to content with that bully, Wayne Lawson. Being related to the head teacher means that Wayne just does what he wants! Its humour is offbeat, irreverent and spikey. The comedy is also effortless, told with a deadpan straightness and irony that doesn’t try too hard. For example when Wayne’s behaviour is captured on film as proof, the teacher blames them for recording without Wayne’s behavior.
