HAY FESTIVAL Join us for our 30th celebrations It's our birthday and everyone is invited. Hay Festival Wales takes place 25 May – 4 June in Hay-on-Wye, bringing writers and readers together to share stories and ideas in events that inspire, examine and entertain.

Welsh skin charity Skin Care Cymru surprised many when on March 1st, St David’s Day, they cheekily replaced our iconic Welsh dragon with a humble lobster on flags around the country. You may have seen one flying outside the Guildhall, on Mumbles Pier or on Oystermouth castle. Over 30 flags were flown all across Wales and this shock tactic was aimed to get people talking. It has now been revealed that this was the start of their 2017 campaign “Don’t Be A Lobster”, aimed at reminding us all that even in Wales, exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause skin cancer. Indeed, Wales has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the UK The next phase of the campaign is erecting signs on Swansea and Gower beaches to remind us to cover up and wear sun cream. The launch will be on Thursday May 25th at 10.00am at Blackpill Lido. Everyone is welcome and there will be some local schools joining in the fun and getting the message across. Come along and join in – free gifts for the first 25! www.skincarecymru.wales

No two children needing a foster home are the same – and neither are those who care for them. Swansea Council’s Foster Swansea service has 135 approved carers who come from a variety of backgrounds. There are single carers, families with children and same sex couples. The one thing that unites them is their desire to play their part in helping to change a child or young person’s life for the better. With Foster Care Fortnight running from May 8, Foster Swansea is keen to speak to people who are considering becoming foster carers. The team will be out and about in The Quadrant Shopping Centre and at various Tesco supermarkets during the campaign. They have also organised two information evenings at the Civic Centre between 6pm and 8pm on May 15 and 22. Here we talk to some of the carers about the highs and lows of becoming foster carers:

relishes change and want something to be challenging and fulfilling then I would say it is for you.”

Tim and Ann O’Hare, who have three grown-up children, have been foster carers for four years.

Federico Podeschi & Darren Williams.

Tim said: “Almost from the off after we got passed as being foster carers, we moved straight into working with parent and child fostering where you have a mum or mum and dad and new born, or relatively new born, who come to live with you 24/7. “The positive thing about it is when we get families who have come to live with us, where there has been a desire to be a good parent but they have just not had the skills. When that works it is fantastic. I think that is what is at the heart of what gives us a real sense of achievement – working with a number of professionals to help this family succeed and for there to be a safe environment for this child to go home to. Working with Foster Swansea I think I have really appreciated the degree of support we do get and that has been pretty consistent. “It is a big commitment to have three complete strangers turn up to your door with suitcases and all sorts of baby paraphernalia for up to six months. There are challenges to it. You can’t change the world but you can be a chapter in someone’s life and I think if you are that way inclined then at the end of the day it can turn out very positively.” Sue Bastin became a foster carer last year. She said: “It’s been a rollercoaster – it’s had some very good highs and some downs. I would say that you have to be committed and you need to be able to see tough situations through. “Tough times can be difficult to manage behaviour which can be extreme. The highs are when you see the results through a growth in the child’s development. When you see that they acknowledge you are trying to do your best for them and when they respond to you and show that they care for you. That’s pretty special. A year on and I’m very glad I did it. It’s tiring and it’s a full time career and I’m still at the start of a long learning curve but I would say with fostering no two days are the same. You will always have variety because you never know what’s going to happen next. But if you are the type of person who

Federico said: “Ever since getting together, what we always wanted was a family, and after getting married we explored what option was best for us. We both agreed that fostering was not only an opportunity for us to dedicate ourselves to raising children, but also a worthwhile way to do it since there are so many children in need of a loving and caring family. “We have welcomed every child as our own and got down to their level to make them feel welcome, understood, safe and loved. Sometimes it has been very challenging, because trauma, fear or negative behaviour gets in the way and you feel like you can’t get passed the wall that a child has built around them. But you just need to persevere to find a loving child hiding behind it. It is just amazing to see their lives turn around and watch them blossom. It fills your heart and makes you forget anything negative has ever happened.” Ian and Claire Hieron, who have three children of their own, started fostering three years ago. Claire said: “It is extremely challenging but really rewarding and that outweighs the challenges massively. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done – when you see the difference in some of these children in a year it makes it worthwhile for me.My two little ones are very much part of helping these children settle in to our home. They love having them but hate it when it’s time for them to leave. We have always said to them if there is ever a time they don’t want us to foster then we won’t do it. As each placement ends we ask them ‘are we going to go again?’ and the answer is ‘yeah – who is going to come in through the door next?’ It can be difficult but if you are struggling you’ve only got to pick up the phone because they have a 24-hour line and they are brilliant. The training is second to none. There are little groups just for foster carers where you can meet up and have a coffee and a chat and that helps, especially when you have just started.” To find out more phone the team on 0300 555 0111 or visit www.fosterswansea.org www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk |

School of Early Years at University of Wales Trinity Saint David How children develop and learn is a fascinating area of study. The School of Early Years has developed a suite of new and innovative degree programmes designed specifically to provide our graduates with the skills and competence essential to work in the early years education and care sector.

We now have programmes on both the Carmarthen and the Townhill Swansea Campus. Programmes are taught either in English, Welsh or bilingually. We also have programmes which run in the community or in areas where there is a demand for provision.

We have daytime study provision and we also offer flexible learning provision delivered on evenings and Saturdays which allows students to maintain work commitments as well as gain a degree. There are also opportunities for personal and professional development through engaging and relevant Postgraduate and MA programmes. The Postgraduate Diploma/MA Early Years Education and Care offers modules on research skills, well-being, children’s learning and development and reflective practice. The Postgraduate Diploma/ MA Early Literacy focuses on emergent literacy, including history, policy and research, literate environments and alternate literacies.

Transition from Primary to Secondary School

The transition from primary school to secondary school for children can be one of their most exciting times but also can be quite daunting too. The most successful transitions occur when the secondary school has a formal program in place; and communicates effectively with both parents and primary school. Have a list of questions with you to ask the SENCO whilst on your visit. = Inform the SENCO if you have any special requests for your child. = During the school summer holidays practice going to school

Here is a list of suggestions to help that process. = Take advantage of all parent meetings regarding transition. From those meetings ensure you have the following: = List of key dates, including holiday and assessment times.

= Find out what is best way for your child to get to their new school. =

Practice the route with your child.

= Let your child do the route with a friend from the same school – be there at the school to meet them. = Then let the children go to school and home again on their own – be at home ready to greet them.

= List of school rules including expected code of dress. This should consist not only of clothing but also wearing of jewellery, length and style of haircuts.

Have a list of everything your child will need and write this down for your child to keep in their room:

= Assessment and homework policy. You need to know when assessments are and how your child will be assessed; when they get homework, how often and how long they are expected to spend doing it.

= = = =

= What methods of communication are available for you to contact the school, i.e. child’s planner; text; email or phone.

On the night before first day and EVERY night before school get your child to pack their bag, including homework (They can use their planner to check this). and get their uniform ready; this will just become a routine habit – saves a lot of stress on school mornings.

= Who is the first point of contact for your child and yourself if you have a concern? = Who the next point of contact is for a more serious event? = How do they pay for their school lunch? What is allowed in their packed lunch? = If your child is the only one going from their particular primary school as the secondary if there is another child in the same position they could be paired up with. If your child has Special Educational Needs get in contact directly with the SENCO at the secondary school and ask for visits for both you and your child separate to the main school organized visits.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Natalie Coles, I am 28 and live in Loughor with my partner and two little boys who have not long turned 6 & 7! I've always struggled to think what career path to take and thanks to an incredibly supportive family I have been given the opportunity to launch my own business and begin doing something which I’ve dreamt of for quite some time!

Tell us about your business

Happily Ever After Swansea provides princess visits, pamper parties, home visits, hospital visits, VIP shopping trips with princesses and so much more! Parents can invite a princess along to their child’s home or birthday party where they can meet and greet their favourite princess! At the moment I play all of the princesses myself but will add more characters as my business grows and hopefully add more performers too. I recently won an award for volunteer of the year at the Swansea Bay Community Awards hosted by The Evening Post. A little girls mum and dad nominated me for all of the free visits I give to their daughter Jorja, who has a very special place in my heart. Jorja has special needs and attends ysgol crug glas school, I first met Jorja at her school and we have made a very special bond ever since – I am very grateful to be so appreciated by Jorja’s family & I am very proud to have won such an amazing award!

Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business?

I started my own business 'Happily Ever After' in April 2016 after going to so many amazing children’s parties with my children and falling in love with the thought of being a full time princess! My children are my motivation, seeing their proud faces when I do visits to their school makes everything worth while! I definitely think it gives them some cool kid points at school having a princess for a mummy!

Give us your top tips for a well-balanced home and work life? I am incredibly lucky that the majority of my work is on the weekend, so when I am working my partner can spend time with our children after being in work all week. Being self employed, I am lucky to be able to drop our children off every day at school & collect them, aswell as being there when they get home! The downfall is that I do work almost every weekend, so I miss out on spending time with them at class parties, days out etc. I do book weekends off in advance especially during school holidays to do lots of fun things altogether. You must take time out from your job and remember making memories with your own family is really important!

What is the one piece of advice you would give to Other mums wanting to start their own business?

My advice for mums who are dreaming of their own business is to go for it!!

If you believe in your dreams, then don’t hold back. If you don't try then you’ll never know! Also, as excited as you may get, keep your ideas to yourself until they are fully developed. Success won’t happen overnight but stay focused on your goal and believe in yourself!

What do you do to relax?

I love spending time with my friends & family, although working as a children’s entertainer, happens mainly on weekends. I work almost every weekend so its difficult to have a night out but you do have to remember to take time out and enjoy yourself sometimes too! I particularly love going out for meals with my family and I can always make time for meals out instead of cooking!!

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it?

Happily Ever After Swansea, specialising in unique visits for your little prince or princess - from home visits to pamper parties & even VIP shopping trips

you can make all of your little ones dreams come true by meeting their favourite princess!

With so many companies in the same area providing similar entertainment its been a challenge to make my company unique. I am always trying to come up with new packages and in particular, free meet and greets with princesses, Easter egg hunts and even princess carriage rides to try and stand out in the crowd!

Title: The Adventures of Beekle Age: Picture Book (4+) Author: Dan Santat Publisher: Andersen On a far off island all imaginary friends wait to be picked by special friends. Beekle waits and waits but when no child choses him, he courageously sets off to find his own. On his journey, he faces many things and finds the world big and very busy. Finally he waits in a star spangled tree, where a clever and thoughtful looking little girl finds him. At first as with any new friendships, there is arkwardness but soon a friendship is born. The story demonstrates the importance that human beings have for bonding with others and sharing experiences. Also how good friendships enhance our lives, and how we miss them when they aren’t there.

The imaginative role reversal of the dynamic in which the lonely Beekle seeks out a child to befriend him gives a sensitivity understanding and acceptance of children who have imaginary friends. Even if you have never had one, you will connect with the feeling of being alone. In parts the story gives you the fleeting feeling that you are travelling or viewing the story through someone’s imagination. The emotions are captured very well in the illustrations and in the earlier part of the story, Beekle’s loneness echoes across the pages. There is also the gentle message about discovering life for yourself, in as childlike way as possible. This is magical children’s book, with delightful art work

Title: Dave Pigeon (Nuggets!) Age: Illustrated Novel (7+) Publisher: Faber and Faber Written by Swapna Haddow and illustrated by Sheena Dempsey This is the second book in the very funny Dave Pigeon series, about feathered friends, Skipper and Dave Pigeon. Told through the eyes of Skipper, the story unfolds with the birds’ accidently ending up with sinister and unsavory Reginald Grimshaw whilst looking for food, and a new home. Whilst Dave enjoys tucking into birdseed, Skipper uncovers the horrible secret. Reginald is infact looking to seek revenge on all pigeons and has caught lots of birds so he can

made them into pigeon nuggets. Embarrassed at school when a bird pooed on him and given the mortifying nickname of Shoulder Poo by the other children, Reginald has never recovered. Everything about Reginald is deeply unsettling from the dirty yellow mac, with tiny umbrellas fixed on the shoulders to protect him from unwanted bird missiles, to his grim looking face, and his glued on hair. Skipper aided by two pigeon agents, Fienne and Agent Swan try to stop Reginald Grimshaw on his gristly mission. His friend, Dave being the plumpest bird is carted off to the supermarket to demonstrate the Nugget Maker to the supermarket chiefs. Now it’s up these three birds to free all the other birds and to save Dave from being the test offering. Can they do it on time? Well-illustrated with irreverent entertaining bubble conversations between the two pigeons. Quirky Dave and Skipper have a great relationship, and the exchanges between them feel just like birds would be! Plenty of misunderstandings of human speak. Inventive, off beat, well crafted story. www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk |

What is a Child Arrangements Order?

Peter Lynn and Partners specialise in child law, understanding the sensitivity and expertise required when dealing with the interests of children. Our experience of acting for parents and children in difficult child arrangement disputes allows us an intimate understanding of how to work towards the best interests of the child. When a family is separating, whether the parents are married or not, planning the future of any children involved is difficult. With whom and where will they reside? What contact will take place? Where will they be educated? Will they keep the same name? If issues regarding the time each parent spends with the child or children cannot be agreed then an application can be made to the Court for a Child Arrangements Order. Child Arrangements Orders replaced Residence and Contact Orders on 22nd April 2014. The new order sets out who a child should live, spend time or otherwise have contact with.

Is this different to an existing residence or contact order? No. The only change is a single order will be issued rather than a separate residence and contact order. A Child Arrangement Order talks of parties in terms of ´the person with whom the child lives´ (i.e. the resident parent by another name) and the person who the child spends time with or otherwise has contact with (the non-resident or contact parent). When the order states the child lives with both parents (albeit in different places at different times) it's comparable to the what was previously known as a Shared Residence Order (as before, the times spent at each parent's homes can be different).

* any party to a marriage where the children were a part of their family * if they lived with the children for at least three years within the last five years, and their application to the Court is made within 3 months of the children no longer living with them * if there is a Child Arrangements Order in force, and they have the consent of the person with whom the children legally reside * if the children are in Local Authority care and they have the consent of the Local Authority * if they have the consent of each person who holds Parental Responsibility for the children

What if I do not have an automatic right to apply? For people who do not meet these criteria, when reaching the decision to grant permission, the Court will consider the merits of their application, their connection with your children and whether granting the order would cause harm to the children.

How long does a Child Arrangement Order last? Until the child is 16, or 18 in exceptional circumstances and where stated in the Court Order. If you move back in with your ex-partner, the order will cease after a period of 6 months of your living together. We will provide you with emotional support and expert legal advice to assist you. Acting with sensitivity and discretion, our expert solicitors can help find the best resolution for you and your children, always ensuring their best interests are kept at the heart of the negotiations. For further information or to make an appointment please contact Sophie Pincott on 01792 310731

The same features of the resident parent and non-resident parent exist e.g. a parent with whom the child lives (what was called the resident parent) can take children abroad for up to a month without the non-resident parent's or court's consent, while the non-resident parent (parent who the child spends time with or otherwise has contact) cannot. Existing residence and contact orders will be treated as child arrangements Orders. Bear in mind that if you were a resident parent (including a parent with shared residence) you will be considered a person with whom the child lives. If you have a Contact Order, you will be considered a person with whom the child spends time or otherwise has contact.

Who can apply? Any parent or guardian of the children can apply for a Child Arrangements Order. People who meet any of the following criteria also have the automatic right to apply for contact with your children. www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk |

SMEAR TES TS

T

his edition’s health article is about cervical smear tests. I won’t attempt to cover all the info in one article, so it will be continued next time. Today’s introduction will explain the practicalities of the procedure & the importance of the test itself. Women are invited to attend routine cervical smear tests under the NHS Cervical Screening programme. It is important to emphasize at this point that it is NOT a test for cancer. The test is done to detect early abnormalities of the neck of the womb that, if ignored & left untreated, could develop into cervical cancer in future. So, it is a test to prevent cancer, not diagnose it.

What is a smear test & how is it done? The

area being tested is the neck of the uterus(womb) which is deep inside, at the top of the vagina. To access this area, the woman will be asked to lie on the examination couch & the doctor or nurse will insert a speculum into the vagina. This is a small smooth, cone-shaped instrument which is inserted when closed & then opened up carefully once inside the vagina, allowing the cervix to be seen. The user then takes a thin plastic stick with a small brush at the end of it to scrape some cells from the surface of the cervix. The sample is put into a pot of liquid & transported to the laboratory for testing. Smear tests are not painful, but may be uncomfortable.

Why are smear tests advised? Cervical cancer is

a cancer which can often be prevented. Cells taken from the cervix are examined under a microscope, to detect early changes that indicate cancer may develop. Since screening was introduced, the number of cases of cervical cancer has dramatically dropped, & so has the number of women dying from it. Cervical cancer is one of the very few types of cancer that can be detected & stopped before it ever begins, all thanks to the screening program. You are very unlikely to develop cervical cancer if you attend for smear tests regularly at the times advised by your GP Surgery. Abnormal cells are found in some women. This does not mean cancer in the vast majority of cases. Remember, abnormal cells indicate that cancer may develop in the future. This means you should have some treatment to the abnormal cells to stop you getting cancer.

Where do I have a smear test done? Most women have the test done at their GP Surgery, by the Practice Nurse. You can also have it done at a Family

29

Two of the most frequent queries which women ask me are as follows: What if I have irregular, unexpected bleeding? Do I need a smear test? The answer is no, not unless it is due. You’ll need to see your GP who may need to examine you internally & inspect the cervix. There are lots of causes, most of them harmless. A smear test is not part of the investigations for unscheduled bleeding. Remember, smear tests are done when they’re routinely due, as part of the screening program, on women without symptoms; they’re not tests to diagnose cancer.

Why aren’t women in the UK called for routine cervical screening on a yearly basis? This is because it takes a long time for cervical

cancer to develop. Secondly, the abnormalities that occur in cervical cells often revert back to normal without treatment. Thirdly, annual screening isn’t cost-effective to the NHS; it would be more expensive to screen annually & it’s unlikely to identify or prevent any more cancers. Furthermore, it may cause physical or psychological harm to women through anxiety (about early changes that may resolve on their own anyway) or over-treatment (i.e. removing cells from the cervix too early, without waiting for them to resolve spontaneously) .Some women DO need to have annual smear tests, after abnormal results or treatment, & these women will be advised and called for this. Next time, I will discuss what the results mean, as well as answer some more of your questions on the subject. Google or enquiring at your EPAU/GP Surgery.
