‘Summer’ if you can call it that has now passed, although in true South Wales tradition we might end up with an Indian Summer now the kids are back in school. As darker evenings draw in, attention now turns towards Autumn which brings us gorgeous parks overflowing with beautifully coloured leaves to stomp around in. My absolute favouites being Clyne Gardens and Margam Park! Autumn also brings us October Half Term (Friday 21st Oct- Sun 30th October), Halloween and Bonfire Night. There are some fantastic looking events coming up this Autumn including the exciting, City of the Unexpected in Cardiff celebrating 100 years of the author Roald Dahl, the Luna Cinema in Oystermouth Castle and Swansea International Festival ( of which you can win tickets to see BBC NOW’s Family Concert on Oct 7th! We also look towards, dare i say it so soon ..... Christmas! Find info about all the local pantomimes to look forward to this December. Enjoy your Autumn!

S
t. Michael’s School enjoyed another outstanding year of success at A Level, with excellent marks and happy pupils being the story of the day. An impressive 50% of all grades awarded at A Level were A* or A, and a third of all candidates achieved at least 1 A*.
Overall, the school achieved a 100% pass rate at A Level, and there were marvellous individual performances. Special congratulations go to local student Theo Davies-Lewis, who achieved 3 A* grades in English Literature, History and Geography and will now take up a place to study Archaeology & Anthropology at Oxford University. Theo only joined the school in the lower Sixth, and has made exceptional progress at St. Michael’s in pursuit of his goal. Another worthy of particular praise is Aman Abrar, who has won a place to study Economics at Cambridge University. Aman, based in Swansea but originally from Pakistan, achieved 3 A* grades in Economics, Maths and Further Maths, with an A in Physics. The School is delighted and very proud of both students, and we are thrilled to see our international and local students achieve success in equal measure.
St. Michael’s continues its outstanding record in placing students for Medicine, with local students Cameron Joseph (Cardiff), Samuel Rajesh (Queen Mary) and Shanali Thantilla (Cardiff) amongst the successful applicants. Mari John will be studying Dentistry at Cardiff University, while the school is also proud to show success in a range of subjects, such as English, which Samuel Walters will be studying at Exeter. Many students achieved outstanding success at AS Level, and the School looks set for another set of superb results next year. Headteacher Alun Millington was delighted, saying “Everyone at St. Michael’s can be proud of the hard work that has gone in to this excellent results day. It is a tribute to the efforts of the students and the quality of the teaching at St. Michael’s that results have been so good, and we wish our students the very best for the next steps on their educational journey.”

D
iabetes in children is an important condition to be aware of & for doctors not to miss. It’s a lengthy topic, so I’m concentrating on explaining the condition & what symptoms to be aware of in this edition, before discussing treatment & management of the condition next time. Diabetes occurs when the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood becomes abnormally high. There are two types of diabetes Type 1 & Type 2. I’ll be concentrating on Type 1 Diabetes in this article as it typically first develops in children/young adults. With type 1 diabetes the illness usually develops quite quickly, over days or weeks, as the pancreas stops making insulin. It is treated with insulin injections and a healthy diet. In the UK about 1 in 300 people develop type 1 diabetes at some stage. What causes diabetes? In most cases, diabetes is thought to be an autoimmune disease. The immune system is (abnormally) making antibodies to attack perfectly healthy parts of the body rather than germs like viruses & bacteria. In the case of type 1 diabetes, you make antibodies that attach to & destroy the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The result is lack of insulin production, high glucose levels & diabetes develops. What are the symptoms of (Type 1) Diabetes? The charity Diabetes UK launched a campaign in 2012, called the 4Ts of Type 1 Diabetes, to highlight the main 4 symptoms of diabetes & to raise awareness of the condition. Lots of children develop DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) which is lifethreatening & requires urgent medical attention, because the Diabetes diagnosis has been missed.
The 4Ts are:
Thirst | Being really thirsty & unable to quench the thirst.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Toilet | Going to the toilet more to pass urine, new bed-wetting in a previously ‘dry’ child, heavier nappies in babies (although I consider this an unreliable sign as not all brands are the same in terms of capacity)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tired | more than usual. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thinner | Weight loss or looking thinner. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> How is diabetes diagnosed?
A simple urine dipstick test at your GP Surgery can detect glucose, which may suggest the diagnosis of diabetes. Or a simple & quick finger-prick blood test can be done on the spot, which, if high, may indicate diabetes.
21
| www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk
Either way, your GP will urgently arrange a further blood test; the only way to confirm the diagnosis is a high blood glucose level done on a sample of blood taken from the arm.
Short term complications of diabetes. Without (insulin) treatment, the blood glucose level becomes very high, very quickly, and acids form in the bloodstream (ketoacidosis). This makes you wee a lot, because glucose leaks into the urine, pulling out extra water through the kidneys. If left untreated, the patient will become dehydrated and likely to lapse into a coma. This serious complication of diabetes can be fatal.
Long term complications of diabetes. Longer term complications of diabetes if the blood glucose level is higher than normal over a long period of time, it can have a damaging effect on the blood vessels. This may lead to the following complications, often years after the diagnosis of diabetes: 8 Angina, strokes, heart attacks, & poor peripheral circulation (i.e. of the legs/feet) due to furring of the arteries. 8 Damage to the small blood vessels at the back of the eye (retina) leading to vision problems. 8 kidney damage, which can lead to kidney failure 8 nerve problems, most commonly of the feet (due to a combination of nerve & circulation problems, the feet are particularly vulnerable in diabetes, manifesting as ulcers, gangrene, & deformity) 8 impotence due to nerve & circulation problems. In the next issue I’ll cover treatment of type 1 diabetes & its complications.

Tell us about your business
I have recently taken over as proprietor of Cinema & Co. based in Castle Street, Swansea. It is a quirky, independent 50-seater cinema with a bar and a child-friendly coffee-shop that will serve fresh healthy food. Its unique concept sets to challenge our common perception of cinema-going by making it a more rounded, social experience as opposed to the formal, impersonal enormity that expensive multiplex cinemas offer. I love the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and how there’s already a real sense of community spirit there.
Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? Since the age of 16 I’ve always had a job in some shape or form. They’ve varied greatly ranging from children’s rights to catering. Dealing with people has featured heavily as well as being in the right place at the right time! Having such diverse experience has made me a jack of all trades, master of none.
When the previous owner of Cinema & Co. presented me with this opportunity, I grabbed it with no hesitation. It felt as if he had set up the business just for me, something that encapsulated all my skills, interests and previous experience. This and the support and encouragement of all my friends & especially my partner, motivated me to start my own business.
How many children do you have?- tell us a bit about your family.
I have 2 very lively boys, aged 2 1/2 and 5. They were born in Oslo as their Dad is Norwegian. We moved back to my home-town 2 years ago. Oscar and Ansel have Scandinavian white blond hair that attracts lots of attention over here! Their angelic looks mean they can get up to mischief and often get away with it!
How do you juggle childcare?
With great difficulty! At the moment the whole family are still adjusting to our new roles, but primarily we share it between me and my partner Johan, which means we are both often working once the kids are in bed. Johan has just set up a photography business too so it’s a hectic household at the moment!
what do you do to relax?
I go to a FunkyPump class twice a week, I find it really helps to clear my mind, ever since taking over Cinema&Co. it’s constantly racing at 100 mph! I also like to get immersed in nature with my family. It’s been really nice rediscovering Swansea through the boys’ eyes in this way, it’s woken up many of my own happy childhood memories.
What’s been your biggest challenge & how have you overcome it?
The biggest challenge has been juggling childcare, housekeeping, the business, & family life. I’m still in the process of working out how to manage everything, let’s just say housekeeping is right at the bottom of the list where I’m sure it’ll stay until we can afford to hire a cleaner!
What’s the one piece of advice you would give to other mums wanting to start their own business?
Go for something that makes you happy and inspires you, this will give you the drive to succeed and ensure that giving up any me-time in pursuit of your goal doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk |

Teaching water confidence and safety techniques from birth, the specialist Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water. With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object. And it’s so important that they do. Within the last three years, ten of our children saved themselves from drowning – despite five of them being only two. Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providing a complete physical workout which in turn aids the development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus!
With a clear emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally very sociable occasions – and excellent for strengthening the bond between the two of you. And as the weeks go by, you’ll love the thrill of seeing your children progress with the help of our professional instructors.
Classes are available throughout South Wales.

Deni Pyke Childminder, from Mumbles Tell us a little bit about what you do and what your typical day looks like. As a registered childminder I provide full or part time care for up to 6 children at a time (including my own) in my own home. I care for children of any age, from small babies up to teenagers. Every day is different, but a typical day might look like this:
A typical working day:
7.30 - 9am Children are arriving at my home, having breakfast, and playing together before we take the older ones to school. 9 - 11am I am usually taking the younger children to playschools, or visiting the library, or attending music, messy play or baby gym classes. Younger babies have a nap if needed. 11am - 1pm Some children need to get ready and go to school, others need collecting from school, and everyone needs some lunch. If it’s dry and warm enough and we don’t have half-day school that day we often have a picnic at a beach or park. 1 - 3pm We usually go out and about, also making sure that anyone who needs it has a nap either at home or out in the fresh air. We visit parks and woods and beaches, stomp in puddles, collect leaves, smell flowers and hunt for bugs and often get a bit muddy. If it’s really too wet or cold we stay home and have fun with the craft cupboard or let off steam in a soft play. Or sometimes we make a disco or a den out of the living room or get dressed up in all sorts of mismatched outfits! 3 - 6pm We’re collecting the older children from school, reading some stories, playing some games, having dinner, tidying up and chatting about our days before everyone goes home.
Are you sometimes curious about what other mums do for a living and whether certain jobs may suit you too? Well, wonder no more! The first A Day in the Life of...... looks into the jobs of Deni Pyke Childminder from Mumbles and Sara Lloyd from Nature and Nurture Childminding in Killay.
How did you get into childminding? I became a childminder after I decided that I didn’t want to leave my first child and go back to work without him, but also wanted to continue working professionally with children as I had always done as that was what I loved and my area of expertise. I attended a course in the evenings to allow me to register as a childminder which took around a year.
what are the ups and downs of the job? The best thing about the job is the fun and the laughter, and watching the children learn and grow and develop so much as we play out and about together having real life experiences while they are so full of the joy and wonder of life. I love watching their characters develop, seeing friendships form between the children, and feeling the strength of the bonds that are able to develop in a warm, informal, home-from-home environment. The worst thing about the job has to be the early mornings getting the house ready and the late evenings cleaning it all up again! The constant activity really does take its toll on your house!
What advice would you give someone thinking of becoming a childminder? I would say to anyone considering becoming a childminder that it is an incredibly rewarding job, worth every second of work that you put into it, but prepare to be completely exhausted at all times from that moment on! It’s physically very demanding, there are long hours with no breaks, there’s a lot of paperwork and ongoing training, and once you’ve taken out all your costs and expenses it’s really not a very lucrative career. But if you enjoy working with children and have the skills and expertise and patience to do it alone (and if you’re not too houseproud!) I can’t think of another job that has made me smile and laugh so much throughout the working day.

Sara Lloyd from Nature and Nurture Childminding, Killay Tell us a little bit about what you do and what your typical day looks like. I am a home based childminder. I look after up to six children at a time (including my own) in my home. We do lots of crafts, cookery and imaginative play as well as going on lots of outings together.
A typical working day:
8am - Setting up activities for the day, preparing food to cook / eat later or for in the slow cooker 9am - Children arrive and explore perhaps today we are making clay models other days we may be cooking bread for lunch, making hungry caterpillars or junk modelling... 10am - Snack time (would you like breadsticks, carrot sticks & hummus or cheese and crackers today?) 10:30am - Out for a walk, let’s go and explore the woods and see how many different shaped leaves we can find! If it’s rainy the local library’s rhyme time sessions are enjoyable. 12pm - Lunch time (today we are having shepherds pie) 1pm - Off out to visit the heritage centre (or perhaps the park, library or play bus). I pack up some drinks, everyone’s coats, sun hats and suncream and off we go. 2:30pm - We wind up the exploring / playing to go and collect the school children 3:30pm - School children collected we go home and have a little snack (grapes & apple or some toast fingers) before we go to play in the garden, play some games or colour / craft. 5pm - Dinner time (tonight we’ll have pasta, chicken & a selection of veggies and sauces in bowls on the table for the children to choose from) After dinner we usually have some quiet colouring or stories time 6pm - Home time for the children, cleaning up time for me!
How did you get into childminding? Having small children of my own I was looking for something I could do from home. I have always enjoyed taking care of children and love my house being full of play and fun. I was inspired by a friend to look into childminding and straight away decided it would be perfect for us.
what are the ups and downs of the job? There are many ups and downs in childminding but the positives far outweigh the negatives when it comes to my job. I love watching the children happily investigating and enjoying the activities I have created for them and seeing their imaginations flourishing. The only negative aspect of this job really is spending evenings filling out paperwork which although obviously necessary can get a little tiresome after 8-9 hours of childcare and tidying, cleaning and planning ready for the next day.
What advice would you give someone thinking of becoming a childminder? Like many things organisation is the key! Having and following a good routine makes everything so much easier. Sara Lloyd Nature and Nurture Childminding Contact for more info: Sara_300211@hotmail.com or 07922113448

What does September mean to your family?
A
ll around us, I see parents frantic to buy school uniform ready for the first day back at school. I see children stressing about going up to the “big” school, some excited, some terrified. Some are stressing about simply going up to the next class. Will I like my teacher? Will I be able to sit with my friends? Some are worried. Will I be bullied in the new school or will I have left that behind me in the old? Will someone notice that I can’t do the work? Will there be someone to help me? In the home ed community, excitement is mounting. Soon all our favourite places will be quiet in the daytime again. We can go to the woods or the park or the beach without it being overcrowded, litterstrewn or having parking issues. We can make use of term time privileges again, such as free visits to CADW sites, or discounted rates with National Trust, home ed days at Techniquest. Soft play venues are more fun during the school day, no fighting, no crowds. We can take holidays in popular resorts for under £100 in off peak times. There are many advantages to home education. We seldom open a bottle of Hedrin nowadays, and we don’t get sick as much. We can change our plans at a moment’s notice if it’s a nice sunny day and we want to learn outdoors, on a rainy day when we’d rather stay dry we can lie on the floor to learn, if we want to. We can watch DVD’s, upside down if we want to. We have wriggle room. Sitting still is optional. Sometimes, so are clothes. We don’t need to wait for fundraising days to do our work in our pyjamas, nor do we have to find money for Book Day and a costume – any

day can be a dressing up day! There is no need to try to recreate school at home. Some families do, if that works well for their learning style. They take the “structured” path, worksheets, curriculum, timetables. There is nothing wrong with that if the children respond well to it, but it is not the only way. Some prefer a more flexible approach, some workbooks or websites but with perhaps more focus on child-led, or on hands-on learning. We started out with this “semi-structured” path but have found ourselves more in an “unschooling” phase this year. For us, this means responding to the child’s own drive for learning, using their passions and interests and following it to the end of the rabbit trail. We’ve found ourselves googling the oldest known things in the world at 11pm, exploring the house with a digital microscope, making our own stop motion movies, creating computer games. We meet up with other home ed friends a couple of times a week and other friends after school. Some people home educate as a lifestyle choice, as is their legal right. Some are forced into it when school provision fails them. Some will do it long term, some as a temporary measure to build their child’s confidence for an eventual return to school and we have seen several cases where this has been successfully achieved, a break for a year or even just a few months was all that was needed. They know though that should they ever need to return, there is a large and friendly community out there to help. If you’ve considered it, but are afraid to take that step, don’t be. No decision is final or set in stone. If you try it and find it’s not for you, then you can always re-enter the school system, perhaps not in the school you left but in most cases there were reasons why you left it and return wouldn’t be desirable anyway. Maybe another school would work out better. Just remember, education can take place anywhere, and doesn’t need a desk or even a roof!
