FAMILY YOGA at YogaPlace Abertawe

T

he benefits of Yoga are many… for adults and kids individually practicing Yoga can make a huge difference to how we with cope with our daily lives, at work, at school, with friends and with our family. But imagine how the benefits increase when we share yoga with your nearest and dearest. Family Yoga classes deliver the same mental and physical benefits as any other yoga class: peace of mind, relaxation, increased bodily strength and flexibility. The benefits don’t stop there, though. Family yoga is unlike any other form of exercise in the sense that it provides a unique opportunity to not only reap the physical benefits of yoga but also share a fun, and often hilarious bonding experience with your children. It’s a very special time that’s never to be take too seriously, where every member of the family gets to let their hair down, play and interact on the same level as the kids, for once. From the perspective of the children, it doesn’t feel like exercise, it feels like play. At first the Family Yoga sessions are vibrant and active, encouraging imagination and mindfulness through movement and then settling in to a calming relaxation where parents and little ones can quiet the body and mind for an often much needed respite from the hectic and raucous activity of day to day family life. Children are often subject to unseen stresses daily, whether being bundled into the car on the school run, whizzing around to extra curricular activities or being ferried to the myriad of kids parties and social engagements that fill the calendars of the majority of parents these days. Family Yoga can help put the breaks on for a short while, allowing parents and children a moment to restore and reset mind and body before the next busy adventure ensues. In addition there’s a social aspect to Family Yoga whereby families can meet and interact in a warm, safe and nurturing environment, away from the all to familiar hustle and bustle of the world. In short, Family Yoga can help build physical strength, relax your busy minds and provide a very special bonding time for little kids and big kids alike as well as planting seeds for future Yoga and Mediation practices. F

ollowing another enormously successful term where the focus has been on Musical Theatre PAA examinations, students (new and old) will be returning to begin The Summer term at Stagecoach Performing Arts School Swansea which will include a diverse and varied set of workshops in Dance, Drama & Singing. Class sizes at the Swansea Stage School are limited in size to give each student every opportunity to shine and show off their skills and no child is restricted to the background or chorus. School Principal Luan Davies is delighted to be able to offer these opportunities to the students: “To see the shyest young child grow into a confident, mature performer is a wonderful thing to behold!” observes Luan.

And with highly experienced and trained Professional Performers aiding Luan with delivery of the high quality teaching on offer, there certainly is a buzz around the Swansea school. “The Performing Arts are not only there to serve those who want to pursue a career in the profession, but for all of us to enjoy and reach our full potential as individuals!” explained Luan.

The school is home to students aged from 4 to 18 years old and each child is given a place with their peers so they can develop comfortably and happily at a pace that suits them as individuals:

Attention is also being focused on the many students who are entering their LAMDA Performance Examinations in July.

“The end of term productions are not the only things that we focus on at Stagecoach – we want each week to be an exciting experience for every student!” Luan continued.

And enrolments are also being taken for the hugely popular Stagecoach Summer School which takes place in August which is open to new and currents students alike. Tel. 01792 204848

F

urther to the introduction to the world of home education in our last issue, Jennifer Foster has kindly offered a more personal insight into her own home ed journey. I wanted to take my third child out of school but rationally it wasn’t a good time. Why? Well, I was a single parent with two teenage children as well as having a 4 year old, I was self employed and struggling to find time to work even with the all three of them in school, I had a very low income and I didn’t have much support where I lived from any family and friends. These were just the main three reasons that meant it really was not sensible idea to home educate! But when we went to stay with my mum and Dad in England (I live in Wales) over half term, I just didn’t take the youngest back to school. He didn’t want to go back ( ‘Mum, its too noisy!) and I, quite frankly, didn’t want to send him back. My other two children, although they both were doing very well at school; one was the head boy and the other was in the top three academically of her year, had had their struggles and I did not fancy having another ten years of going through the same old routine and hearing the same old stories about the school system. Homework at 4 years old, lessons about things I really didn’t agree with, forced socialising with other children who just weren’t like my own children and the realisation that I was slowly seeing through the older two children sitting their GCSEs that did you really have to sit in a school room for so many years just to pass these fairly easy and pretty irrelevant exams? So I decided to follow my nose and did not take the youngest back. I braced myself for the criticism that I expected to have and I was right too. No one thought it was a good idea, especially my other two children and the teachers. As usual it was seen as me being difficult and / or creating more problems than I had already. But oh the relief I experienced by taking him out of the system! The boy couldn’t hold a pencil, read

or talk very well ( he was receiving speech therapy at the time), but within 6 months of home educating consisting of play and some ‘little but often’ structured lessons ( my daughter became very ill and we spent 3 months travelling to visit her in various hospitals), the little boy had started to write, speak well ( we were told he didn’t need to come to speech therapy after 3 months of home schooling) and could also read above his age. I found that he learnt by doing simple things every day like going shopping, playing with dice, catching the bus and train, playing on his own and doing things he found interesting (building with lego, planting seeds in the garden with my boyfriend, going to the beach when we fancied, playing football in the park). He even started reading the writing on the roads when we were walking around (it is surprising once you start looking how many words there are beneath your feet!) and I started to see him really experience the world around him as a beautiful place to study and engage with. I saw him develop true feelings and appreciation of life as a time flow and he absorbed everything that happened around him as a connected lesson which was completely different to how my other two children (and other schooled children) saw things. It is a total joy to experience. Even though my domestic and financial situation is still pretty grim it doesn’t matter so much as he is happy and because he is, it gives me the energy to carry on even though it’s hard. The other day, he asked me about ‘potential’. I was watching a video on youtube. I explained to him that it meant what you could do when you were older. He said to me that he wanted to ‘learn’. When I asked him what did he want to learn about, he said ‘maths’. This, my 5 year old boy who loves football, shows me that the home education idea is working for him. If you would like to find out more, then contact www. facebook.com/SwanseaHomeEducators, who can signpost you to your local info and support groups.

If you are short of time, not a confident baker or want a simple recipe to encourage the kids to bake , this is for you. It is reliable and provides a good simple cake which can be finished off with any form of icing or decoration. It helps if you have an electric hand mixer, but can be done with a wooden spoon, just takes a bit longer and more elbow power. You can add chocolate chips, dried fruit or lemon zest and juice if you are feeling fancy.

Take the butter or baking spread out of the fridge in plenty of time to ensure it is nice and soft. This will affect how well you cake turns out. Make sure you have a clean dry surface and wash your hands. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees centigrade.

First sieve the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl, followed by the sugar, butter, vanilla extract, eggs and milk. With the mixer on its lowest speed, gently start to mix the ingredients together. If the mixer is too high you will have a flour cloud. Increase the speed to its middle setting. Keep mixing until you have a smooth batter. This should only take a minute. Check with a spoon that you have all the flour mixed from the bottom of the bowl.

• • • • • • •

180g self-raising flour ¼ teaspoon baking powder 180g caster sugar 180g butter or baking spread softened 3 large free range egg 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Grease an 8inch cake tin and line with greaseproof paper. Pour the mixture in and gently smooth it flat. You can also make cupcakes. Bake at 175 degrees for approx. 25 mins. When the top is set, firm but springy the cake is done. Remove and cool on a wire rack. Take out of the tin when it is cool enough to handle. Now all you need to do is decide how to ice it. I’ve used a simple icing sugar and boiled water topping with sprinkles. Be careful and only add a tablespoon of water at a time, or your icing will be very runny.

Children present to The Speech Clinic with a wide range of difficulties, including delay in saying single words or combining words together into short sentences, delay in understanding the language that they hear at home, difficulty pronouncing words or specific sounds, and stammering. We also look after children with additional diagnoses such as Learning Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder. If parents are concerned about their child’s speech, language or communication development, then we would be happy to offer an assessment appointment in our Swansea or Cardiff clinics. The Therapist will use play equipment and pictures to assess the child’s skills in comparison to the expectation for their chronological age. If any difficulties are identified, we can produce a report and liaise with nursery/school if required. If a child is on the waiting list for NHS Speech and Language Therapy then we would be pleased to work with our NHS colleagues and provide a collaborative approach. Independent therapy does not replace NHS therapy, but simply runs simultaneously with more frequent sessions for longer periods if required. Please contact us if you have specific concerns about your child’s development and we would be happy to discuss. Tel: 01792 206784 Email: reception@thespeechclinic.co.uk

Mum

to Mumpreneur

Tell us about your business My business is called Sleep For All. I support families as a Night Nanny and Children’s Sleep Specialist. I work with all ages from newborns to teens. For young babies, I work with families to take care of their baby (or babies!) overnight, allowing parents to get some much needed rest. I usually work from 9pm-7am, and take complete care of the baby during this time. If the mum is breastfeeding, I simply take baby into mum for a feed, then wind and settle the baby, allowing mum to go straight back to sleep. A lot of the time, parents contact me when they are going through a difficult time. It might be a mother who is recovering from a traumatic birth, mastitis, or maybe suffering from post-natal depression and are simply desperate for sleep. In these cases, even just one night of good sleep can make a tremendous difference to their well-being. For older babies and children, I provide advice and support to help resolve sleep issues. This ranges from toddlers who may still be waking several times a night, to school children who are resisting bedtime, or keep coming into their parent’s bedroom at night. When I help parents with these kind of issues, I’ll usually do a home visit or Skype consultation to talk through the issue and work out a sleep plan for them to follow. I can then be on the other end of the phone to support them as and when they need. Alternatively, where parents are simply too exhausted to put a plan into place with any consistency, or if the case is more complex, I’ll spend a few nights with the family in order to help them put the plan into place. When I provide the overnight support, most children will be sleeping through the night by the end of the week. For these families, some of who have been close to crisis point, it can be life changing when their child starts to sleep through the night for the first time! Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? I had my first baby, Joshua, while my husband and I were living in Australia. He was a terrible sleeper from day one. He rarely slept for more than an hour, and would always need to be fed or rocked back to sleep. I was happy to do this, and thought that when he was on solids, things would magically get better. By 10-months though, things were just the same. I was due back at work and was so exhausted, I wasn’t sure how I would cope! Lots of people told me to let him ‘cry it out’, but I just couldn’t listen to him cry. Thankfully, there was a parenting helpline available, and they talked me through a few changes to the routine that might help that didn’t involve leaving him to cry it out. That support I received was invaluable, and when I started to get the sleep I needed, I felt so much better! Joshua was also noticably happier during

Sleep For All www.sleepforall.co.uk Tel: 01792 699958 the day, as he was getting more sleep at night. When we returned to the UK after 4 years, I trained as a childminder, and then as a Night Nanny, and started working for a specialist Night Nanny agency in Surrey. We moved to Mumbles a few weeks after the birth of our third baby, Elodie. I knew that there were no agencies in the area, so I set up on my own as Sleep For All.

what do you do to relax? Drink tea, eat cake, and crochet!! What has been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? The biggest challenge at the start was to spread the word about Sleep For All. Night Nannying has been well established in London and Surrey for the last few years or so, and it has recently started to grow in popularity across Wales and the rest of the UK. For me, it is all about word of mouth. Most of my business comes from recommendations from parents who I have helped, either on a workshop, consultation, or overnight, which is great. Give us your top tip for a well balanced home & work life. Try not to stress about being on top of everything all the time…. Work, cooking, cleaning, school run, kids activities, seeing friends, exercising… you would have to be super-human to get everything done every day. Just a few things a day is good enough!! what is one piece of advice you would give to other mumpreneurs? Tap into the skills of your friends to help you along the way! Most people will be more than happy to help. I had some excellent marketing advice from a good friend, and in return I supported her with her son’s sleep. It was great to be able to work together this way!

Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA)

C

ows milk protein allergy ( CMPA ) is an allergic condition, triggered by consuming cow’s milk or by drinking/eating products made from cow’s milk. This includes formula milk. The most common food allergy in the UK, it affects 2-7.5% of children aged under 1. Diagnosis is often delayed because the symptoms can be vague & multiple, easily fitting with other conditions.

Symptoms of CMPA: can be classified

into 3 groups, based on whether they affect the gastrointestinal system ( the gut), the respiratory system ( the airways) or the skin.

GI system: itching/swelling of the mouth

or throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, colicky abdominal pain. However, constipation is equally as common, as is reflux ( heartburn), redness around the back passage, blood or mucus in the stools, food aversion.

Skin: itching, redness, eczema, ‘hives’ of skin Respiratory: nasal itching, runny nose,

congestion, sneezing = upper airways symptoms. Cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheeze = lower airways symptoms. After eliciting the symptoms, your GP/Health Visitor will want to know how quickly they develop & how severe they are, as this determines the management. Your GP/HV will also ask how much formula/food (if symptoms start after weaning) was consumed, plus the duration & frequency of symptoms. Fast or immediate reactions can occur within minutes, but usually it’s within 2 hours of the milk being consumed. (Life-threatening anaphylactic reactions are rare with cow’s milk allergy, but the reaction can still be severe)These children are referred to a Paediatrician with an interest in allergy. A blood test or skin prick test can make the diagnosis. Future food challenges & reintroduction of cow’s milk protein will need to take place in a hospital. Most children will grow out of it by the age of 1 to 3 years while for some it may take a bit longer. Slow or delayed reaction, occurring hours or days after ingestion of cow’s milk protein, may be mild to moderate in severity. Diagnosis is made by excluding cow’s milk from the diet, for at least 2 wks. (For breast-feeding mothers, this means eliminating cow’s milk from their diet) Most symptoms should improve within 2-4 wks. If symptoms improve, then do a ‘home challenge’ within 2-4 wks of starting the exclusion diet, i.e try the child with a small amount of cow’s milk or formula milk ( depending on the age of the child). If the symptoms recur, the diagnosis is confirmed.

25

If the symptoms don’t recur, an alternative diagnosis is likely. Once diagnosis is confirmed, continue the cow’s milk exclusion diet for 9-12 months & at least 6 months after initial reaction. Children in this category of slower reactions, can be managed by your GP/HV with the support of a dietitian for advice and education. The child is likely to grow out of this allergy with time.

Management of feeding:

Breast-feeding mothers need to exclude milk & milk-containing foods from their diet. They should include a calcium & Vitamin D supplement and to include non-dairy sources of calcium in their diet. For babies that are formula fed, there are different formula types available on prescription. These are made by breaking the (cow’s milk) proteins down into smaller & smaller parts, making it increasingly difficult for the body to recognise the protein in them, thereby minimising the risk of reaction. Extensively hydrolysed milk is tried first. If a baby is still having symptoms on a hydrolysed formula, then they can try an amino acid (AA) formula. The latter is sometimes tried first if the allergy is severe or there are multiple allergies. Parents are requested to maintain a symptom diary as well, it is really important to record this to help better inform professionals. CMPA is easily mistaken for Lactose Intolerance (LI), an intolerance to the carbohydrate in milk, lactose, due to absence or a reduction in the enzyme lactase present in the gut. This is very rare in infants and children, but can be seen after a tummy bug for a short period of time and the symptoms are frothy, loose stools. In this case, parents are advised to buy a lactose free formula for the duration of the illness and then change back to the original formula.

Dietary advice...

By Varsha Nagaraj Paediatric Dietitian The dietitian’s role is to help support and educate parents in ensuring the child’s diet still has all the essential nutrients and overall balance needed for growth and development.

Cow’s milk and milk products ( this includes other mammal’s milks like goat/sheep and buffalo milk and products as the protein profile in all these is similar to cow’s milk) will need to be avoided in the diet for children with CMPA.

Foods that commonly contain milk and need to be avoided on a milk free diet: • All kinds of cow’s and goat’s milk, yoghurts, butters, cheeses, milk puddings • Some cereal, biscuit, rusks, crisps, bread and baked goods • Foods in white or cheese sauces • Many margarines and low fat spreads • Many desserts and sweets- ice creams, chocolate and mousses • Many processed foods, eg. fish fingers, sliced meat, sausages etc. Milk and milk products mainly provide calcium, protein, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and iodine to the diet. Education will focus on milk free weaning, ideas on milk free recipes, alternative milks, stocking the cupboards with healthy essentials, incorporating milk free substitutes into the diet and reading food labels. Parents are encouraged to prepare their own food as much as possible with milk-free ingredients to ensure all food is milk-free.

Lactose free milks and products still contain milk protein in them, this would not be suitable for children with CMPA and symptoms may recur. Some non-dairy sources of calcium include : Calcium enriched soya milk, oat milk, hemp milk, coconut milk, almond milk, hazelnut milk, Chick peas, Soya beans, Tofu, Red kidney beans, Okra, Watercress, Parsley, Apricots, Currants, Figs (dried),Almonds, Brazil nuts, Hazel nuts, Tahini, Sesame seeds, Sardines, Pilchards, Tinned salmon, Whitebait, Scampi, Broccoli, Spring greens, Fortified products such as bread, breakfast cereals and orange juice. Two user friendly websites that specialise in supplying allergy products are: www.dietaryneedsdirect.co.uk and www.goodnessdirect.co.uk Around the age of 9-12 months and for at least 6 months prior to the initial reintroduction trial of cow’s milk protein into the diet.

Brands that offer soya or other milk-free alternatives

Alpro, Provamel, Co-yo, pea protein, supermarket own brands Bute Island Farm Cheeses, Tofutti, Daiya Pure, Suma, supermarket own brands Alpro, Oatly Swedish Glace, Booja booja Moo free, Plamil, supermarket own brands

Breastmilk and/ or formula milk for the first six months of life is sufficient to provide an infant’s daily calcium requirements. As weaning progresses and a child’s milk intake reduces, this additional calcium needs to be provided in the diet. Soya infant formulas are not recommended under six months of age. However, over the age of six months, including soya products during weaning increases the variety of calcium rich foods available in the child’s diet.

Ingredients to Avoid on a Milk free Diet Artificial cream, Butter, Butterfat, Buttermilk, Casein, Caseinates, Cheese, Creme fraiche, Ghee, Hydrolysed whey, Hydrolysed casein, Margarine, Milk sugar, Lactose, Fromage frais, Milk, Milk solids, Milk protein, Modified milk, Non fat milk solids, Skimmed milk powder, Shortening, Sodium caseinate, Yoghurt, Whey, Whey solids, Quark The allergens that are present as ingredients in food are highlighted in bold print on the food labels including milk, for easy identification.

cow’s milk containing foods can gradually be reintroduced into the diet . This should be gradually reintroduced into their diet to test whether they have developed tolerance. This involves following a milk ladder and observing symptoms. A milk ladder is a group of milk containing foods taking into account the type of milk used in the recipes, the temperature of heating and the time of heating which influences the degree to which the protein has been broken down. Again a food and symptom diary is advisable during this time as well. This is a ‘trial and error’ method in which the food containing milk is trialled for tolerance. If there is a recurrence of symptoms on the trial, the food is then excluded in the diet for a period of time then re-introduced. This method is then continued until the child is able to tolerate some foods containing milk ( or milk substitutes) to achieve an overall balance in the diet. With time, parents are able to predict patterns and amounts of foods that the child can tolerate which will enable them to manage the condition with more ease. Websites of charities Allergy UK (wwwallergyuk.org) and Anaphylaxis Campaign (www.anaphlaxis.org.uk) are informative and supportive.

Veg! And finally the Evil Squirrel whose impromtu appearances on the garden fence drive Pugly up the wall. Pugly is convinced that the squirrel is conspiring against him.

I

wish I were a Pirate is one in a series of brand new board books from Bloomsbury. It’s ideal to be read aloud whilst the design of the book offers fun things to do. The narrative is told in a simple entertaining rhyme that teaches us about being a pirate. On each page there’s a discovery to be made as children can pull tabs, lift flaps and move sliders. See the pirate pop up from the Crow’s Nest, walk the plank into shark infested seas and find a trove full of treasure! There are various educational benefits that support learning such as developing observational skills; strengthening hand to eye coordination and stimulating imaginative play through these novelty moving elements. I wish I were a Pirate is an attractive chunky book illustrated in bright nautical colours designed sturdy enough to withstand eager hands.

et us enter the mind of Pugly, a little pug dog with big ideas. We are served a large dollop of innocent doggy humour as Pugly tries to fathom things out for himself in his own doggy way. There are a host of other adorable animals to be met. Clem the cat who is prime rival for their eight year old owner Maddie’s affections; loyal Clive the fish of whom communication between fish and canine sometimes gets lost in translation; Chester the Afghan Hound, a wannabee advice life guru and full time model for the dog food Yeah

Pugly has a big dream. He wants to bake the best cake ever and send it into the Great British Bake Off. Initially Clem isn’t very impressed with Pugly’s stunts as he tries to whisk the mixture with style, but soon the sly cat realizes it’s a good opportunity to get one over on the dog by pretending to help. At first Pugly doesn’t understand why his cake smells so bad – after all Clem recommended from a cook book that by adding ingredients like tuna, smelly cheese and onions it would make his cake extra special. Then he realizes what’s missing – Maddie’s Mum’s special pistachio nuts. All he has to do is add those and everything will be okay. Unfortunately he doesn’t realise that Clem has told the Evil Squirrel about the nuts, and causes a huge mess in the kitchen looking for them. Pugly Bakes a Cake will have children everywhere laughing at his unintentional antics. The world of Pugly as seen through his eyes is highly amusing.

Why read with your child?

It is proven that children who enjoy reading achieve higher across all the curriculum areas in school. Regular reading develops their speed, fluency and comprehension. Giving them the opportunity to read a range of different texts will widen their use of vocabulary in their speech and written work. Reading together increases literacy skills but it also has a huge emotional benefit too. It provides you with a special time when you can sit alone with your child and share time together. If you are worried about your child’s reading, please call Claire at Kip McGrath on 01792 299996 to arrange an assessment.

James reads 20 mins every day = 1,800,000 words per year Amy reads 1 min every day = 3,600 words per year

Enjoy!

• Encourage your child to talk

How to read with children:

• Set aside some time Find

somewhere quiet without any distractions - turn off the TV and computer. • Ask your child to choose a book They will be more interested in reading if they have chosen it themselves. • Sit close together Encourage your child to hold the book themselves and turn the pages. • Point to the pictures If there are illustrations, relate them to something your child knows.

about the book Discuss the characters and their dilemmas. This helps children understand relationships. • Ask them what will happen next, how a character might be feeling, or how the book makes them feel? • And lastly and above all - make it fun! It doesn’t matter how you read with a child, as long as you both enjoy the time together. Don’t be afraid to use funny voices: children love this!

Your child, the artist!

A

s the parent of a 3 month old baby, this idea might be one you had yet to consider. Perhaps your time and your own creative hang ups mean that you would rather leave the ‘arty’ (and inevitably messy) stuff to the nurseries, schools or child minders. However, as parents and educators we have a responsibility to nurture creativity and a love of art from a young age. Children learn and develop an immense variety of skills from experimenting with art. While pencil control and using a crayon or paintbrush have a great deal of importance placed upon them, particularly in school age children, we sometimes forget that there is so much more to art than drawing a squiggle on a page and saying it’s a dog. For babies so much of their development is sensorial. By finger painting, using a variety of materials, mediums and textures your child is making sense of their surroundings. Their senses are also being stimulated, they are making choices about colour, material and shape, they are problem solving! They are imagining, developing their language and their vocabulary, discovering which hand they find more natural to use and developing coordination and fine motor skills. All this is before their final masterpiece is finished! While as adults we are concerned more with the end product, a beautifully coloured in picture, people that look like people, objects that resemble what they should. We forget that it is all about the process and rarely about the end result. Natural ability or expertise is of no importance to a child and neither should it be. Ask your child to talk about what they are creating. I expect they’ll surprise you. A line on a page to you may be a dragon, a crocodile or a hug to them! (My daughter genuinely drew a hug when we she about two!) We need to be encouraging children to feel proud of their creations too, however they end up. By the time they get to key stage 2 in school, that’s when they start to self and peer evaluate their work, where they are encouraged to be critical about the end result. It is certainly then if not before, when a child realises quite abruptly that their level of work is different to their peers.

If a love of drawing and creating is instilled in very young children, the hope is that this will stay with them. So while I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir I also understand that work, life, time constraints and making dinner all get in the way of making time for ‘art’ with our children. So here are a few ideas. Babies as young as a few months old will enjoy the sensation of paint on their fingers and seeing their prints. Allow them freedom to repeat and choose colours. Paint their feet and hands and put big sheets of paper on the floor to create their prints. Play dough is wonderful for creativity. Add scent, shells, beads, anything to add to the sensorial aspect of this medium. Art is all around us. Go to the park, create some ethereal art with leaves, sticks and mud. (Google Andy Goldsworthy) Next time you visit you can look to see if it’s still there and discuss any changes. Cutting and sticking from age two onwards may fill you with fear but having freedom and access (initially supervised) to these tools helps children develop a sense of safety. Mix up the materials to use for sticking; wool, leaves, fabric, crepe paper. Junk modelling is a brilliant way to not only recycle but also to inspire children to create rockets, ships, houses and trains. Messy Play can be kept contained too! Water and sand are so good for early development. Why not try adding shaving foam and food colouring or paint to a sealed sandwich bag, to create a discussion on colour changes and how it feels. Swansea has many museums and art galleries - it’s never too early to introduce children to the world of art. In the last year we have seen a renaissance of adult colouring books, proving that the majority of us like to pick up a pencil and fulfil a creative need!! So let’s all do our bit to keep art and creativity alive in our children whoever we are. Because your child IS an artist.
