St. Michael’s Excellent A Level Results 2015 Sixth Form students at St. Michael’s School have been celebrating their excellent A Level results. As always, the School’s performance has exceeded national averages, with 80% of grades awarded being A*-B. 25% of all grades awarded were A*, and a further 30% were A grades. Overall the A Level pass rate was 99%. Headteacher Alun Millington was quick to praise the students for their fantastic achievements, saying “The superb performance of our Sixth Formers is testament not only to their ability and skills, but also to their commitment and dedication to study.” Mr Millington also commented that, “As Headteacher, I am delighted to see so many of our young people thriving and maximising their potential, and this must also reflect the quality of teaching and our commitment to maintaining small class sizes and a purposeful learning environment”.
The School is proud of all its students but of particular note is the success of our highest performing students. In all, eighteen students achieved A* or A grades in all their subjects. These include local students Philippe Rodgers, who achieved 5 A* grades, and Charlotte Ramsey, who attained 3 A*s and 2 As. International students, such as Ugonna Onwuchekwa, were also well represented in the highest achievers. Ugonna’s 4 A* grades mean that he will be able to fulfill his ambition of studying Medicine next year. In all, 12 students have gained places for Medicine. Mr Millington is confident that St. Michael’s is facing a bright future. “With education in a seemingly perpetual cycle of change, I believe our emphasis on a traditional curriculum, free from limitations such as the Welsh Baccalaureate, will continue

to give best value to our students.”

Back to School Preparing your child for their first day at school
Y
ou’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that the Summer holidays are coming to an end and starting school is a huge milestone for children and parents alike. Watching your child walk off into their new setting can be an emotional time for both you and your child and after spending the last 6 weeks together having fun and creating memories, it can make the separation just that little bit harder for you and your child.
Visiting the school with your child
Rest assured though, that your chosen school will be used to welcoming children (and parents) who feel a little overwhelmed at first. The teachers and classroom assistants will be there to offer help and support and to help your child feel that they are a valued participant in school life and they will be there to answer any questions you or your child may have on their first day. Visiting the school with your child is also a great way to introduce them to their new surroundings. Open days and social events such as fetes are an ideal opportunity to familiarise yourselves with the surroundings. Most schools offer an induction day or some settling in sessions ahead of the official start day. This will help to familiarise you and your child with the school as much as possible in advance. Induction days offer parents and children the opportunity to go along and see their new classroom, meet teachers, find out about the school day and meet other children who will be in their class on their first day.
Foundation Phase
During your child’s time in school you can expect them to learn through the principles of the Foundation Phase. The Foundation Phase encourages your child to become creative and imaginative which makes learning more enjoyable and effective. Children will be given opportunities to explore the world around them and understand how things work by taking part in practical activities relevant to their developmental stage. They will be challenged through practical activities and develop their thinking with open-ended
questions. Children will be encouraged to explore concepts and share ideas for solving problems. You can help your child’s development by getting actively involved in their learning, not just at home, but in the garden, in the park and even at the shops! It is about capturing your child’s imagination and interests and making it enjoyable. The more your child is stimulated and engaged, the more they will learn. You may not realise it, but all the fun activities that you and your child do together at home are all linked in some way to enhancing your child’s all round development which in turn supports the principals they will be learning in school. Lots of children, and of course you as parents, will all be experiencing the same mixed emotions about your child’s next big chapter in their lives but ultimately it’s a wonderful thing that they will be growing, learning, developing and building character as well as meeting new friends who will also form a special part in your child’s life. oald Dahl is one the best loved authors of all time! Millions of children have enjoyed stories such as the Gremlins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, George’s Marvelous Medicine and The Magic Finger. His achievements in children’s literature have been honoured – his life and work celebrated at the Roald Dahl Museum in Buckinghamshire, his tales turned into stage plays and films and immortalized with the creation of a special Roald Dahl Day held each year on the 13th September! His trademark black humour and dark themes are remembered for their foul, larger than life characters usually receiving a deserved sticky end! His books resonate with today’s kids just as they have done with their mums, dads and grandparents before them. His storytelling still remarkably fresh. Vibrant and vivid trips of the imagination recognized as the hallmarks that have made his books such enduring classics.
The Twits
This year marks another anniversary –
the 35th anniversary of the Twits!
My favourite Dahl book about a rather loathsome couple! Deliciously illustrated by Quentin Blake capturing their full on grossness! Mr and Mrs Twit are a well matched pair. Both spiteful, and odious in every sense of the word! He’s got a disgusting scratchy beard filled with all sorts of repulsive horrors such as bits of left over lunch and dinner. She’s not too pretty either! Years of foul thoughts permanently etched into her face. They love to mistreat their pet monkeys, the Muggle Wumps, for example making them stand upside down. They coat limbs of trees with special glue in order to capture birds to cook into pies. Both Twits are well matched in their hatred of each other. Each take great pleasure playing pranks on the other. She delights in serving him a plate of worm spaghetti. Whilst he lengthens her cane, to make out she’s shrinking. Their practical jokes escalate as they try to outdo each other.

The Roly Poly Bird, watching the proceedings, stops the Twits nastiness by warning birds away from the glue. Together with the Muggle Wumps they foil the Twits by playing their own trick, convincing them that their house has turned upside down! A fabulous tale of exquisite nastiness!
[WIN] To celebrate 35 years of this hilarious book, Puffin have released two new editions of THE TWITS - a SCRATCH N SNIFF edition and, NEW for Roald Dahl Day 2015, an edition with a real HAIRY BEARD attached to it! Roald Dahl in Swansea On Sunday 13 September, visitors to The National Waterfront Museum will experience a wonderful array of imaginative activities to celebrate national Roald Dahl Day. From 12pm-4pm, the Museum will be transformed in whizzpopping style with plenty of hands-on activities including splendiferous storytelling, kooky arts and crafts and delumptious science demos. Visitors will also have the chance to take part in a gigantuous gallery trail and see a Willy Wonka walkabout. Speaking about the event, Events Officer, Miranda Berry said: “Welsh born Roald Dahl has given us a wealth of fantastic material to engage with in a creative and imaginative way. We are very excited to be sharing some fun and quirky activities with our visitors, and celebrate Dahl’s stories that are still so popular with everyone.”

Did you know that Roald Dahl was Welsh? He was born in Llandaff, Cardiff on September 13th 1916
There are even rumours that he was a spy in the mould of James Bond! In his writing for children, Roald Dahl took his characters and readers on a series of unforgettable adventures – including James’ transatlantic flight in a giant peach, Charlie’s journey through Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and Sophie’s travels with The BFG.
Next year, 2016, fans will be able to enjoy great celebrations as it will be the centenary of his birth. For further information on Roald Dahl visit www.roalddahl.com
Deputy Minister for Culture Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates said: “The Roald Dahl 100 celebrations in 2016 should be quite an adventure - in the words of Willy Wonka,
‘Tremendous things are in store for you! Manywonderful surprises awaityou!’
Wales was first in-line to announce a programme of events recently to celebrate the centenary of the Welsh born author and the world’s number one story teller, Roald Dahl in 2016. His stories are currently available in 58 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 200 million books!
During 2016, the Wales Programme will include City of the Unexpected, a city-wide performance celebrating all things Dahl, produced by National Theatre Wales and Wales Millennium Centre, and a programme of outreach events by Literature Wales taking the wonders of Roald Dahl and his characters far and wide. Roald Dahl’s work will also be celebrated through an exhibition of illustrations by Quentin Blake and World Book Day.
The Roald Dahl 100 celebrations coincide with ‘Wales: Year of Adventure’ in 2016 and Roald Dahl himself was no stranger to adventure – whether as a child getting up to wellNe documented mischief in the local xt sweetshop or as a young Ye pilot during World War ar Ro Two.

Mister Maker comes to Swansea
Tell us a bit about your new tour?
This is my first Mister Maker theatre tour here in the UK... and I am so excited! It has always been a dream to tour a show and now that’s coming true. I have performed shows at Butlins over the last year and everything has been building to the launch of the UK tour. Final preparations are being made to what we think is going to be a fantastic show... The show will be lots of fun! It will have the heart of Mister Maker and celebrate creativity - and reflect our audience’s favourite parts of the TV programme. But we also want it to be a lot more. Being a live theatre show, we intend to throw in lots of music, surprises and comedy...and make it a show
that the grown-ups will enjoy as well as the Mini Makers! ....And of course, The Shapes will be dancing live! Their entrance onto the stage is so exciting...it always gives me goosebumps!
Are you just touring in the UK or are you going worldwide?
We will be touring the UK for nearly a year! I have just returned from a theatre tour of Australia, which was amazing too. I feel so lucky to be doing my job and to be putting on a show that makes people smile.
Have you been to Swansea before?
I have been to Swansea before, but sadly I haven’t spent much time in the city. I intend to have a good look around during my stay and meet lots of lovely people. I have watched Swansea play football quite a few times against my home town team, Gillingham. But that was a long time ago as the
Swans are way above the Gills these days!!!
Do you have any tips for any young aspiring Swansea artists?
The most important things are to have a go, have fun and don’t worry about making mistakes. I think with art, there are no right or wrong answers. It’s all up to your own creativity - whatever age you are. Have a go at making something and I’m sure you’ll be very proud of yourself. Love Phil and all the Mister Maker team - hope you can come and enjoy the show!
Flu changes every year... make sure you and your family are protected Focus on children... This year children; • aged two and three, • four year olds who are not in school and • children in Reception Class, Years 1 and 2 in Primary School
...will be offered the free flu vaccination.
Flu can be very unpleasant for children. They have the same symptoms as adults – including fever, chills, aching muscles, headache, stuffy nose, dry cough and sore throat lasting up to a week. Some children develop a very high fever or complications of flu such as bronchitis, pneumonia and painful middle ear infection. They may need hospital treatment, and very occasionally a child may die from flu. For children with long-term health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease or lung disease, getting flu can be very serious as they are more at risk of developing serious complications. Children are good at spreading flu, because they tend to sneeze everywhere and don’t use tissues properly or wash their hands. They also usually play in groups or spend time in a group in the classroom and infections spread easily in these environments. The children’s flu vaccination is given as a nasal spray. It is quick and painless. The nasal spray flu vaccine will not only help to protect your child from getting flu, it also stops the disease spreading from them to their family, carers and the wider population.
Who else can have the FREE seasonal flu vaccination? As well as the groups of children listed above, the flu vaccine is available FREE on the NHS for people at greater risk from the effects of flu; including: • Those aged 65 or over • Those with chronic medical conditions including heart or chest problems, asthma, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, stroke (or mini stroke), or spleen problems • People with lowered immunity due to either a medical condition or taking medication, in particular long term steroids or other immuno-suppresive drugs • Pregnant women • People living in a nursing or residential home • Carers • Community First Responders, and people working in voluntary organisations providing planned first aid, such as St John’s Ambulance
If you are not in any of the groups above you can obtain the vaccine from your pharmacy for a cost of around £10.
Question and answer with Dr Louise Focus on flu... What is flu?
Flu occurs every year, usually in the winter months. Some people think flu is just a bad cold, but it isn’t; flu is much worse than that. Symptoms start suddenly and can be severe they usually include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles, and often a cough and sore throat. Most people who are fit and well recover fully from flu, but for some people flu can cause serious illnesses that can lead to needing hospital treatment. Flu spreads easily and causes many deaths every winter. The only way to protect yourself and your family from flu is to get the vaccine.
Is the flu vaccination safe?
Yes, the flu vaccination is safe. Some people get mild side effects after the vaccination such as a slight temperature or aching muscles for a couple of days afterwards. Other reactions are rare, and flu vaccinations are very safe. For those who have had the vaccination before and suffered an allergic reaction your GP can advise as to whether you should have it again.
Why do I have to have it every year? Flu is caused by viruses which can change each year, so new vaccines are produced to try and match them. For the best protection, the seasonal flu vaccination should be given every year. It takes approximately 2 weeks following
Further information and advice is available from www.beatflu.org your local pharmacy or GP Practice.
vaccination to develop protection against flu so it is important to get vaccinated early and before flu starts to circulate.
I heard it didn’t work last year, is this true?
Last year, after the vaccine had been made, the virus changed unexpectedly and the vaccine prepared didn’t match it. This couldn’t be predicted and unfortunately meant the flu vaccine wasn’t as effective as we would like. But it is the best way to protect people from flu. Even if you had it last year and you’re not sure it worked, you still need it this year, as the virus will be different and it is the only way to protect yourself from flu.
Where can I get the vaccine?
The flu vaccine is usually available from the end of September. Most adults can have their flu vaccine as an injection by arranging an appointment with their GP practice. The vaccine is also available in selected pharmacies across Wales. The preferred vaccine for children is a nasal spray vaccine. Children aged two and three, four year olds who are not in school and children with increased risk of complications from flu can be vaccinated by making an appointment with their family GP practice. Children in Reception Class and Years 1 and 2 in Primary School will be offered the nasal spray vaccine at school. It is important that parents return the signed consent form sent home from school if they want their child to be vaccinated.

Tell us about your business Tiny Toes Ballet Ltd. is the UK’s first and only ballet programme integrated with the Early Years Foundation stage curriculum. Established in Swansea in 2011, it is a 4 stage progressive syllabus for babies and children from 6 months to 7 years old. The themed, fun filled and nurturing approach develops basic ballet technique alongside fundamental skills such as number, language, rhythm, poise, knowledge and understanding of the world, and confidence. We believe our reputation precedes us, and due to the ever growing demand for classes, Tiny Toes Ballet was franchised this year. We have also established a follow on school for our older pupils, ‘Dance Academy Wales’ where we offer Royal Academy of Dance ballet examinations. We currently teach ballet and tap to over 700 pupils weekly across South Wales including Swansea, Llanelli, Neath, Cardiff, Newport and Abergavenny. Most recently, with permission from Macmillan books, 156 of our pupils aged 3-7 years, performed a specially written ballet ‘The Gruffalo’ to a sell out audience of 500. We have also been nominated for the UK’s best pre-school dance activity. Last month we were approached by BBC2, who want to run a documentary about Tiny Toes Ballet for prime time television.
Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? I attended vocational ballet school from the age of 12 and trained as a professional Classical Ballet dancer. I am also an experienced primary school teacher as well as a qualified
23
| www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk
and registered Royal Academy of Dance ballet teacher. After working as a primary school teacher, I was keen to develop a creative curriculum in which children could learn through movement, express themselves and develop their natural creativity. Ballet as an art form is traditionally seen as very disciplined. From my experience ballet is full of so many attributes that are beneficial to the development of the whole child. I wanted to bridge this gap and make ballet accessible to all children. When my son was only 5 months old he was communicating to me through movement and music before he could talk. I believe all babies are born to dance!
Whilst working as a full time primary school teacher I started the first tiny toes ballet classes, on a cold Saturday morning in 2011, with a handful of pupils in a church hall in Sketty. Through mouth of word the demand for classes soon grew and within a year I was teaching over 100 pupils each week and had requests for classes as far as Carmarthen, Brecon and Cardiff. I never dreamt that the business would have grown so much or so quickly. It is because I am doing what I love and am always striving to deliver the best possible service to our pupils, that I have found myself in this position. I continue to teach classes three times a week and I have a wonderful team of teachers who are also passionate about teaching and developing young children. We all follow the same belief which is our motto “nurturing natural ability’. All children are born with innate sense of creativity and an inquisitive passion to learn and develop their talents. We strive to give our pupils the opportunity to develop their natural abilities.
How many children do you have - tell us a bit about your family I have two sons. Elis aged 4 and Osian aged 5. They love to attend our Tiny Toes holiday workshops and experiment with all the class resources, instruments and tap shoes whenever they get the chance! I have been married to my husband Gareth for nearly ten years- he is my confident and unpaid business mentor, patiently listening and advising me on my endless ideas
and plans for the business on a daily basis!
How do you juggle childcare? Osian attends school full time but Elis is still in nursery so I have few hours each morning to work and then I usually finish the rest of the work late into the night when the children are sleeping. Elis will be starting full time school in September however, so I am hoping that the late nights will cease. I am very lucky to have a close and supportive family who also help with childcare when I am teaching classes.
What do you do to relax? I like to be outdoors walking or cycling. I have recently taken up running which I find very therapeutic and it’s nice to be able to exercise straight from my front door. If I had to drive to a class or the gym I’d never make it. I also like to go on holiday so I leave the phone and laptop at home to completely relax, see the world and spend quality time with my family.
What’s been your biggest challenge in business & how have you overcome it? I studied History at university and then trained as a primary school teacher so I have no business experience. I would say the biggest challenge for has me has been learning about all aspects of running a business. I have had to react quickly and make important decisions to ensure the successful growth of the business. I have met some great individual business consultants who have helped and advised me. At some points it has seemed quite overwhelming but I have learnt to take one step at a time, to reflect and to ensure common sense prevails.
What’s the one piece of advice you would give to other mums wanting to start their own business? Make sure you invest only what you are prepared to lose. I began with a passion, an idea and £1000. If you do something that you love your business will becomes a passion and a vocation rather than a job. I love running my own business and feel a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. Since the age of 8 I was determined to be a professional ballerina. Although I have taken a different path that determination and focus is still with me today and the same advice that I was given when training to be a classical ballerina remains “you must eat, sleep and breathe it!” For more information please contact Emma on 07864 857920 | www.tinytoesballet.co.uk

Meet our Graduates of 2015 “I would strongly recommend this course to anybody in search of a flexible means of achieving an honours degree, it has certainly been a worthwhile experience!’’ I am delighted to have received my degree from Swansea University! At the age of 19 I decided to take up the Part-time Degree Programme offered by DACE, enabling me to combine my studies with full-time employment, and later in running my own business. I pursued a named degree in history; however I have also studied modules ranging from psychology to sociology.

Believing in the potential of every child
It has been a very enjoyable experience and my tutors have been consistently dedicated in their teaching and I have also received excellent oneto-one tuition during my final year. At the time of writing I am anticipating taking a short break from my business to pursue postgraduate education, as I have been advised this will enhance my prospects of achieving my long-term dream; a career with the U.N. GLYN HARRIES, BA (HONS) HISTORY “My university experience has been outstanding and my memories will remain forever.” I started the Part-time Degree in Humanities in 2009 and mainly studied history and psychology. The passion, wisdom and expertise of individual lecturers made learning a pleasure. Studying the degree required a substantial amount of dedication and commitment, but it has broadened and enhanced my intellectual knowledge and has also increased my level of confidence and boosted my self-esteem. Travelling to lectures on those dark, damp, cold winter evenings after a hard day at work was quite an undertaking. However, the content of the lectures and the friends I made over the years always made my journey worthwhile. I would certainly recommend the Part-time Degree in Humanities to one and all! Top tips for a smooth start to the school year...
A
new school year and new chance to get things right! Hopefully you were thrilled with your child’s report at the end of summer term. Unfortunately, you may have been left feeling concerned about their progress, motivation and confidence. The following tips are great way to ensure your child has the best start to the year as possible.

Did I Say “I love you” Enough to Last a Lifetime
W
ithin three months, my world has been turned upside down. I very recently had a cryptogenic stroke which left me with Broca’s aphasia and apraxia. Aphasia and apraxia are just fancy medical terms for saying that my expressive communication (speaking and writing) was devastatingly affected. At the age of 31, with two boys to raise, a nursing career and training for a 1/2 marathon, a stroke was not on my agenda. Strokes very rarely affect someone of my years, but more so important then my age, was the age of my two children; 4years old and 15 months. My kids were much too little and they needed their mother. It was three days after my stroke when the shock had subsided and the gravity of what disabilities I had been left with came into focus. As much as I tried, communication with the rest of the world was not coming back as easy as I would have liked. My sister was at my bedside, as she was most of the time that I spent in the hospital. We were working on my speech rehabilitation which was essentially what you would learn in early primary school. She was reading out sentences that I was supposed to attempt to write. I sat, crossed legged on my hospital bed with a note pad, trying to write “The dog was black.” I couldn’t do it. With what seamed like an hour, I scribbled “dog, black.” I knew that wasn’t correct. I knew that I had missed the connecting words of a sentence but I had no idea what they were. My internal dialogue could say this simple sentence, but when I opened my mouth or put pen to paper, all I could muster was “dog black.”
I surely did not give them enough encouragement, enough words of praise and enough words of wisdom to get them through to adulthood. I surely did not say “I love you” enough to last a lifetime. I had written letters to my boys since the day they were born, detailing their lives. But, as life has gotten busier, the letters had been few and far in between. What if I could never write to them again? They need to know how perfect and how miraculous they are to me. I needed to tell them they are enough, I loved them more then anything and my heart beats for them. How many words did I waste that didn’t mean anything. I regretted every time that I fought with my four year old about what type of trousers to wear to Playschool. The times were I uttered the words, “I’m tired” or “I cant right now, I am busy.” I should have used my energy to tell my four year old “the clothes on your body do not matter. I respect your choice to wear what you want.” Or “I will always have time for you, you are important.”
I regretted the time I spent on Social media instead of writing
the most amazing love letters to my
children documenting every cherished memory. How I longed for those moments back.
I could feel the sting of tears welling up in my eyes and the lump rising in my throat. At that very moment I was not frustrated, I was not feeling sorry for myself and I was not overwhelmed. All I could think of is what was the last thing I wrote to my boys. What was the last thing I told them? Would they remember any of the things that I had taught them?
My sister looked at me with compassion and empathy in her eyes. I gestured what I had wrote and with tears threatening to spill over, I could only say “Boys…Not Write.” She grabbed my hand. She looked at me and I knew that she understood what I was trying to say. She spoke words of encouragement and words of empathy. She said with such conviction that I would get better and would be able to say the things I so desperately wanted to tell my children.
33
Remarkably I did get better. With a lot of help from my husband, sister and speech pathologist and a lot of determination and hard work, I
| www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk
relearned sentence structure and began to speak and write again. I recovered enough to say what I so desperately wanted to express to my children. I make a point to focus my energy on choosing the words that come out of my mouth with hopes that I never forget the way this feels and what the stroke has taught me. Among many things that this experience has taught me, (I am sure you will be sick of hearing about it but the stroke has been my greatest teacher) is that communication matters. Conversations matter. The words you choose matter. Talking leads to understanding and that is never a bad thing. Words have a magical power to make people feel wanted, loved and special. They let people know they are not alone and even in extreme cases, to want to live another day. The opposite is true as well. Words can give sadness, anger, disgust and can break a child’s spirit. We can live in heaven or hell by the sentences we string together. What power! We can choose our words to give love to this world. If it’s honest, kind and is used to lift someone up, say it. Don’t let fear get in the way. I want you to imagine that you are a child or young teenager. Remember when you felt like an utter disappointment and regretted your actions. Is it when you failed that math test? Is it when you cut your own hair (or your sister’s) or dropped a very breakable ornament? Now, can you imagine when your mom, dad or a loved one found out and they said, “I understand that was a mistake. You will need to fix this, but we can work through it together. You have not disappointed me. My love for you is unconditional.” How good would you feel? The words that they spoke can make you feel safe and supported and important to them. Now, imagine that your loved one had a difference response. They rolled their eyes, sent you to your room and the look of disappointment haunted the lines in their face. How would you feel? Certainly not safe, or loved or important. I try to remember this in every interaction with my children. Although it sometimes isn’t easy, I want them to feel loved and that I understand they are
human and will make mistakes. I am not pretending to be some sort of expert or prodigy of parenting. I have made many mistakes and will continue to do so. I have gone to bed more often then not worried that I made the right choices for my children or said the right things. I think if we are honest, everyone has. In all our parenting wisdom, we are perfectly imperfect and will make blunders along the way. I have accepted that. But, what I do ask of myself is to choose to fix my mistakes and never let a relationship suffer for my impetuous response. I see now with such certainty that words with intentions can bring about peace or can spew out venom that poisons the space around you. Words have the power to mend relationship, stitch together an open wound and heal the heart. Say the things that matter to you. Have the conversations that you always wanted to have. Tell your children that your heart beats for them. We don’t know when we can get another chance. It seems like a lifetime ago, but I have been home from the hospital for nearly two months. Every day I try to live my life at the pace of my children. I read more stories, I have more playtime and attempt to see the world through my children’s eyes. At day’s end, when the last story is read and I tuck my children into bed, I ask myself, “Did I give enough encouragement, or words of praise to last them into adulthood? Did I say ‘I love you’ enough to last a lifetime?” I don’t know, but I’m working on it.
