Ever wanted to try acting? The Society for Storytelling’s 16th annual National Storytelling Week will take place from Saturday January 30th to Saturday February 6th 2016. National Storytelling Week takes place in storytelling clubs, theatres, museums, schools, hospitals, spoken word venues, and care homes (where this event has been steadily growing each year!) Where the events take place, the web of stories will be spun with sufficient magic between the breathe of the teller and the ear of the listener. National Storytelling Week is celebrated by all ages. Folk tales, fairy lore, figments, phantoms, dragons, serpents, storms at sea. A good teller will conjure intriguingly. So as with every year this far we begin at the beginning. There was the storyteller....Once upon a time. Come and snuggle up by the fireside for a tale or two as St Fagans celebrate National Storytelling Week on the 30th & 31st January. Free event.

The Swansea Cobras Junior Roller Hockey team have come on leaps and bounds since starting back in March of this year. We now have 14 players and each week someone new gives it a try. We train at Cefn Hengoed leisure centre on Sundays at 11am. We have lots of fun, and will be having team building session in the New Year. As the parents of the players enjoy the sessions so much too, we have set up a Friday recreational session at Cefn Hengoed for adults. Starting on Friday 8th January 2016, at 8pm so if you fancy giving it a go come along! We have spare equipment available. Come and have a knock about for fun and fitness!

Heart Candle Jars STEP 1: To get started you’ll need a few tools: 1. Acrylic Paint or Chalk Paint 2. Decorative ribbon or yarn 3. Masking tape 4. Any sized jar 5. Box Cutter Knife or Scalpel 6. Permanent Marker 7. A string of battery led lights or a flameless candle depending on the size of your jar STEP 2: Stick on a few strips of painter’s tape on one side of the jar. You can then draw any size heart on the tape using a permanent marker. STEP 3: With a box cutter or scalpel knife, cut along the heart you drew on the tape. Then start peeling off the tape around the heart. STEP 4: Start painting all over the jar it may need 2 coats. After it’s fully dried, carefully peel off the taped heart. STEP 5: With the decorative ribbon or yarn that you’ve picked out, tie a bow around the top of the jar. It’s a nice way to add a little more texture to your project STEP 6: Add in the light string or battery tea light. Now you’re ready to share with your loved one! Even if it doesn’t turn out perfect, they’ll likely appreciate your efforts. Remember that making the jars is half the fun.

dream, to provide positive male role models to young men between the ages of eight and eighteen years old who do not have a father figure.

W

e ve all read articles at some point about the ramifications of growing up fatherless ( and that’s absolutely not taking anything away from what some amazingly strong and hardworking mums do on their own) but studies have told us that children that grow up without a father ( although this isn’t in every case) are likely to suffer from one or more of the following psychological effects; quick to anger or be more aggressive, more likely to be emotionally depressed, be more prone to low self esteem, achieve lower exam results, more likely to use drugs or be twice as likely to end up in prison. In 2015, women accounted for 91% of lone parents with dependent children and men the remaining 9%. These percentages have changed little over the previous decade. Women are more likely to take the main caring responsibilities for any children when relationships break down, and therefore become lone parents. O.N.S 2015 Jason Jackson from Cockett, has experienced first hand the effects of growing up without a dad and has taken the bull by the horns and decided to do something about it. His fabulous brainchild is the Charity, ‘Lads Without Dads’, which aims to support boys who have either lost their fathers through bereavement, or who have not had them around. “It’s been an idea of mine for more than five years,” said the 34-year-old. “It stemmed from me growing up without my father — he left when I was eight. Lads Without Dads is now a small team with a common

‘We aim to achieve this by providing and introducing a range of activities, services and opportunities designed to emulate the role normally fronted by a father ( such as camping and fishing trips, bike rides, attending football matches & sports events, learning to surf, rock climbing, basketball, rugby, employment and educational opportunities and many more). These young men will be the fathers, Police Officers, Politicians, and role models of the future and we want to give them the opportunities, experiences and education they would otherwise have no access to. By helping and providing support and opportunities to these young men at the time in their lives when they need it the most, we will also be helping their families, friends, the wider community and the future generation. As well as through physical activity, Jason would also like to offer counselling and a youth clubstyle premises for the boys, helping to reduce antisocial behaviour. Jason hopes to grow Lads Without Dads into a charity to benefit youngsters not just in the local area, but nationally, or even internationally, as he does not see there is support out there like it. Being a newly founded and very small organisation we are starting from the very beginning and as a result need as much help and support as we can generate’. Lads Without Dads has already received lots of support and messages from people that want to volunteer their time to these young men and has also received backing from several small businesses in the area. If your are interested in getting involved or are a business that would like to support LWD or think you may be able to help them in their mission, then please get in touch! LWD will be arranging an array of fun, exciting and innovative fundraising activities in the near future and need as many volunteers as possible. These ranging from sponsored cycles, walks, climbs and any other activities you can think of, we need your ideas too!

First of these is a sponsored ‘DIP’… A swim in the freezing Welsh Sea on New Years Day 2016. We will be taking our dip at Swansea Bay at 2pm. If you are interested in taking part, would like sponsor forms and more information please contact us at: lwd@ladswithoutdads.org www.facebook.com/ladswithoutdads.org/

Bringing mATHS INTO EVERYDAY LIFE M ake sure your child enjoys any maths activity you do. If they struggle to understand, make mistakes, or get bored: keep calm, make it easier, change the subject, tell them a joke, play football, go to the park …. but please don’t get cross or impatient - you don’t want to put them off maths!

Here is a good activity, which is appropriate for any age, level or long car journey! Ask the question: ‘The answer is 10 (or any number), what’s the question? ‘ Possible responses: 8 plus 2 • 5 x 2 • 25 - 15 • 2.5 times 4 the number before 11 • 9999 subtract 9989 • the square root of 100 • 1 million divided by one hundred thousand This is a brilliant activity because: there’s no failure; it stimulates thinking about and stretching knowledge of numbers and mathematical relationships; it is good fun. Everyday Maths for children e.g. 3 - 7 Sorting things out and putting things away, e.g. shopping, toys, cutlery, clothes. Talk about which things go together and where things go, giving clear instructions for position such as ’in the cupboard, on the bottom shelf‘. Matching pairs of socks, shoes, gloves. Ask questions ‘3 pairs… how many socks?’

Comparing objects according to size, weight or capacity, e.g. the longest spoon, the lightest shopping bag, the cup which holds the most, the shortest person, the widest hand, the bottle which is half full. Matching and counting when setting the table, preparing food, sharing out food, etc. Counting, weighing, measuring capacity and timing when cooking Talking about time, referring to the clock at different times throughout the day, (preferably a clock with hands), setting times for certain events, e.g. ‘We’ll have lunch at 1 o’clock.’, timing events, e.g. ‘How long will it take to wash the dishes?’ Handling small amounts of money when shopping, counting small totals. Older children 8-11 Weighing, measuring capacity and timing when cooking. Converting a recipe for 4 people to one for 6 people. Being involved with measuring and calculating how much curtain fabric is needed, how much wood for shelves, how many wall or floor tiles are needed, how much carpet etc. Talking about time, e.g. How long is it until lunch time? The journey takes 2½ hours, when will we arrive? We need to be there at 2.00 pm, when do we need to leave home? Many children will still need practice with reading clock times, particularly minutes past and minutes to the hour. Handling amounts of money when shopping, working out total costs, working out change, checking receipts. Working out prices of sale items, e.g. 20% off. Managing pocket money and saving for things. Working out distances and directions from maps. Discussing and comparing house prices from newspaper house sales pages. Working out how much petrol will be used on a journey, working out average speed for a journey, costing journeys or holidays etc. Most importantly make it fun!

Ordering and sequencing when getting dressed, going to the shops, having a bath etc. Talk about what you do first, what you do next, and last of all.

By Phillipa Rae This month we’re taking a look at some well-loved favourite classic books! Title: The Very Hungry Caterpillar (first published 1969) Author: Eric Carle Publisher: Puffin This famous classic picture book tale is about a very hungry caterpillar. He eats his way through the week by munching on a different fruit each day till finally he can take no more, eventually becoming a beautiful butterfly. The narrative is a simple story told in very few words whilst managing to teach children about counting, different food and days of the week. The highly distinctive illustration of the green and red caterpillar has been delighting children for years and has a place in all nurseries. Title: Green Eggs and Ham (first published 1960) Author: Dr Suess Publisher: Harper Collins Dr Seuss’ trademark catchy wacky rhymes and funny whimsical illustrations present a story about keeping an open mind about things – in this case new food! The abstract rhythmical offbeat narratives depict Sam-I-Am as he persistently tries to convince an unnamed other to eat green eggs and ham. Sounds revolting – Unnamed thinks so too! Finally Sam-I-Am manages to get his message home when the doubter gives in under pressure. And guess what? Sam-I-Am was right! Green Ham and Eggs taste good after all! Title: The House at Pooh Corner (first published 1928) Author: A A Milne Publisher: Egmont Illustrator: Ernest H Shephard These gentle heartwarming adventures about a little bear, Winnie the Pooh and his friends are still tickling children’s imaginations in their eighty-eighth year! The stories are centred around the One Hundred Acre Wood where Pooh’s friends such as little Piglet, the gloomy Eeyore and bouncy feline Tigger live. Despite being a children’s book there’s a sweet elegance to the narrative and the characters are charming.

The Phantom Tollbooth (first published 1961) Author: Norton Justin Publisher: Harper Collins Children’s Books Milo is a little boy who is always bored till he finds a tollbooth in his room. Entering through it, he discovers the strange land of the Kingdom of Wisdom in which it appears that chaos has descended. Milo has a quest - to restore the land back to order he must rescue the two princesses, Rhyme and Reason. The author uses highly clever wordplay with literal puns on English Language figures of speech. For example when the Mathmagician (the king of Digitopolis, the Kingdom of Numbers) gets mad and starts adding up anger and multiplying wrath! The narrative is simple enough for children to understand whilst remaining humorous, imaginative and engaging. Title: The Wizard of Oz (first published 1900) Author: L. Frank Baum Publisher: Various. Illustrator: W. W. Denslow The Wizard of Oz is an American novel about a young girl, Dorothy and pet dog Toto who are whisked off in a hurricane from her Aunt and Uncle’s farm to the magical land of Oz. The house lands in Munchkin Country accidently killing the Witched Witch of the East. The Munchkins are overjoyed and give Dorothy the magical shoes that she will need on her quest to get her back to Kanas. On her journey she encounters three of the most distinctive characters in children’s literature The Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion who all have problems of their own to solve. Underneath the surface the story is about growing up and developing into who you really are. It also about confronting your fears – in this case the Wizard who turns out not to be so scary after all! And of course the Scarecrow gets a brain, the Tin Man gets a heart and the Lion gets his courage.

Mum to Mumpreneur Tell us about your business Hello! My name is Lydia and my business is Swansea Homestay, which helps international students find local families to live with. We have a whole range of hosts, from busy young families all the way through to older retired couples. Hosting is becoming really popular for those that like to meet new people from around the world, but also appreciate earning a great extra income through their spare room; anything from £350 to £540 per month! And the reason students love living with a family? They get their very own British home-life. In this way they can get to know local people, the local culture, and have the opportunity to practise their English through every-day conversations.

Lydia

Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? My husband and I have three young children. I had been an English (as a second-language) teacher for a number of years and saw lots of oversees students that wanted to live with a local family but didn’t know how to find one. That was my eureka moment; to find students and families and to match them to each other! So, back in 2012, I launched the Swansea Homestay website and enquiries came flooding in. To date, I have placed over 250 students of more than 25 different nationalities. After having my third child I realised that teaching, running the business and looking after the children wasn’t realistic. So it was at that point I decided to take the plunge, leave teaching, and focus on my family and business. What do you like to do to relax? It’s important to me to take time-out and switchoff from the business. I love to take the children down to Bracelet Bay. We will potter around the rock pools, explore the caves and then head up to Castellamare for an ice cream. Whatever the weather, this is a great little trip out. When I am on my own I like to hang out with my mum friends from Mumstop (the mum and baby group I help

run). We’ll head out for a coffee or just ‘veg out’ at home; they are an amazing support network and I love them all dearly! What’s been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Working from home is both a massive plus and a massive drawback of the business! Its brilliant to be able to just walk downstairs to work and be able to juggle business and home tasks almost side by side. However, being at home means that I need to have a lot of self-discipline. It is all too easy to be distracted by tasks around the house and not spend as much time as I had planned working on the business. Give us your top tip for a well balanced home and work life. Prioritise your children and when they are with you then make them number 1. Its all too easy to fool yourself into thinking you must answer that crucial phone call or check your messages as soon as your phone bleeps. But the reality is that 99% of the time that call or message can wait. To show my children that I am putting them first, before everything else, is really important to me. What is the one piece of advice you would give to other mumpreneurs? When you have that eureka moment it is natural that you will want to tell the world! You will be excited and want to sound all your ideas off someone. Just be careful not to tell too many people as you want to protect that original idea you have until you are ready to launch your business. Choose one or two people that you can really trust. A friend with great business acumen would be ideal. Your best buddy may be cheering you on but you also need someone who, from their proven experience, can help your thrash out whether your idea is viable and what might need changing. Please get in touch if you would be interested in hosting. If you don’t have a spare room then you could also consider hosting student dinner guests, offering informal conversation practise or tutoring in English. www. swanseahomestay.com info@swanseahomestay.com

Asthma

A

sthma is a condition that causes inflammation in the smaller airways of the lungs. From time to time this inflammation irritates the muscles around the airways, causing them to constrict. This results in the typical symptoms of wheeze, cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath because it is difficult to get air in and out of the lungs. The inflammation also causes the lining of the airways to produce extra mucus which causes further airways obstruction. Symptoms can range from mild to severe between different people, and at different times in the same person. Each episode of symptoms may last just an hour or so, or persist for days or weeks unless treated. Asthma can start at any age, but it most commonly starts in childhood. At least 1 in 10 children, and 1 in 20 adults, have asthma. Asthma runs in some families. There is no cure for asthma, although about half of children with asthma will grow out of it before they reach adulthood. Symptoms of mild asthma: mild symptoms from time to time, e.g. mild wheeze and cough if you have a cold or a chest infection, during the hay fever season or during exercise. A child with mild asthma may have an irritating cough each night, but is often fine during the day. Moderate asthma:episodes of wheeze on most days, with symptoms worse at night or first thing in the morning. Severe asthma symptoms (often called an asthma attack): very wheezy, tight chest, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in talking due to breathlessness. See a doctor urgently if you develop severe symptoms that are not eased by a reliever inhaler. You may need emergency treatment with high-dose reliever medicine and other treatments, sometimes in hospital. A severe asthma attack can be life-threatening. Certain triggers can cause asthma symptoms to flare up from time to time. These are infections, pollens and moulds (as in hayfever), exercise (yet, exercise can be good for you with asthma- you can take your reliever pre-activity to prevent symptoms developing) certain drugs, animals, chemical fumes, certain pillows and mattresses, house dust mite, and the big one, passive smoking. Even if adults smoke away from children, smoke on clothes, hair, etc. may make asthma worse. All children deserve to live in a smoke-free home, in particular, children with asthma.

Diagnosis: If the symptoms are typical, then the diagnosis is made easily. Extra tests, i.e spirometry (measures how much air you can blow out into a machine) +/- peak flow meter (measures the speed at which you can blow air out of your lungs) are done to confirm the diagnosis (usually you are asked to keep a diary of readings over 2 weeks to inspect the trend) However, both tests are not suitable for younger children as they require understanding and co-operation to get reliable results. Hence treatment is often started in this group based on symptoms. TREATMENT Most people with asthma are treated with inhalers, which deliver a small dose of medicine to the airways. It is vital that you learn how to use your inhalers correctly or the medicine may not get into your lungs properly, resulting in persisting symptoms. A reliever inhaler is taken as required to ease symptoms. The medicine in a reliever inhaler relaxes the muscle in the airways, making them open wider and easing symptoms quickly. If you only have symptoms every now and then, the occasional use of a reliever inhaler may be all that you need. However, if you need a reliever inhaler three times a week or more to ease symptoms, a preventer inhaler is usually advised. A preventer inhaler is usually a steroid inhaler, taken each morning/night, to prevent symptoms developing. You should not stop using your preventer inhaler, even when your symptoms have gone – this will prevent symptoms from coming back. You should then not need to use a reliever inhaler very often (if at all). A spacer device is like a small plastic chamber that attaches to the inhaler, and they are commonly used by children. It holds the medicine like a reservoir when the inhaler is pressed. A valve at the mouth end ensures that the medicine is kept within the spacer until you breathe in. When you breathe out, the valve closes. So, you don’t need to have good co-ordination to inhale the medicine if you use a spacer device. A face mask can be fitted on to some types of spacers, instead of a mouthpiece. This is sometimes done for young children and babies who can then use the inhaler simply by breathing in and out normally through the mask. A short course of steroid tablets (to reduce airways inflammation) is sometimes needed to ease a severe or prolonged attack of asthma. See a doctor or nurse if symptoms are not fully controlled, or if they are getting worse. For example, a troublesome night-time cough or wheeze, symptoms preventing activity or sport, peak flow readings being lower than usual, increased use of reliever inhaler, or your child is missing a lot of school due to symptoms. www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk | 24

Mealtime chaos Back to mealtime calm!

to School

W

hether it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner, family meals provide an opportunity for family members to spend time enjoying good food in each other’s company. For many families, mealtime may be the only time when they have a chance to come together as a unit and share quality time. Eating meals together provides a great opportunity to create and strengthen family bonds as everyone shares stories about their day, plans for the next few days, or simply engages family members. As lovely as the ideal time may be, when you have a Toddler who is answering ‘no’ to everything you say or do this can become a stressful time for everyone. The toddler stage in a child’s life is where they want to test your limits as parents and assert their own free will. Parents are often frustrated by this behaviour but fear not, because this is just a passing stage but by setting clear boundaries from a young age, can help make mealtimes together a little less stressful.

Being a positive role model for your child and showing that you are enjoying your food saying how yummy it is, will hopefully encourage them to try it too. Offering praise and encouragement when they do sit nicely or try something new is also important. Making comments when they refuse to eat food may reinforce their habits just to get attention. What is important to remember is that children have a natural curiosity and need to move about, so a physical activity before a meal is a good idea to increase the heart rate and burn off that excess energy which in turn will hopefully make mealtimes less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone! If you think toddler mealtime can be mayhem, you’ll change your mind once you get to the delightful teenage stage! Remember to enjoy every moment... Written by Manager - City Day Nursery

Sarah James

Having a meal routine and getting your child involved in preparing for mealtimes is a good way to encourage your child to become independent and make choices. Things like getting them to help you set the table and talking about who is going to sit around the table with them are a great way of getting them involved with the whole process.
