West Swansea Hawks Since starting in 2016, the West Swansea Hawks Girls Rugby Cluster have gone from strength to strength, 2018 being the best year yet and we are back in March 2019, for another exciting season.

2018 saw us entertain other clusters at our home festival at Gowerton RFC as well as visiting and participating in other cluster festivals around Wales with great success. As well as playing other clusters, the Hawks take part in the Summer Ospreys Touch League part of Ospreys in the Community. With around 100 players registered with us we look forward to our 4th year, to not only grow but to continue our success around Swansea and to make use of the fantastic facilities at Gowerton RFC , Swansea University, the 4G facility at Fford Cae Duke and other clubs in the West Swansea area.

Study music and theatre...

The study of music and theatre is a growing industry in the UK today, with many more children and young people getting involved.

Through the study of music, many skills can be learned and developed, such as interpersonal communication, dedication and discipline; along with allowing for lifelong friendships to be formed with like-minded individuals. Many see the arts as a hobby, simply for fun, however it is a highly educational study that has dramatic importance for the development of individuals. It teaches language and communication through the different forms of media used, appealing to many different types of learners. Additionally, emotional intelligence and curiosity develop,

the desire to learn and to learn with passion develop greatly, which allows people to become more rounded individuals. Those who do not normally flourish in education may find that through drama, music and dance they have a stronger affluence for the topic at hand. By training in various areas, such as singing and theatre, children and young people can develop spatial intelligence and teamwork, along with having a positive atmosphere for personal growth. Many see cost as a reason for not pursuing this, however, as teachers, we aim to keep costs low, and keep the enjoyment at its maximum. As a musical theatre teacher, I have personally seen the pupils develop massively in a short space of time; not only in their musical ability, but in their personal growth. Each pupil is able to have the experience of one-to-one tutoring, as well as

learning in a group environment from a teacher who is up to date with their training, and passionate about their subject. The study of musical theatre especially allows for a sense of achievement, and the opportunity to pursue qualifications that can accumulate and provide an opportunity to progress further in their chosen discipline. Many believe that the study of theatre is a narrow life path, and does not offer opportunities, however I wholeheartedly disagree. This is a pathway that offers many different side streets for development, progression and opportunities for later life. Through the study of theatre, music and dance, a young person can not only develop their creative mind, but exercise their entire brain, building valuable life skills and learning continually. Music is within us all as individuals, and together, we are a symphonic masterpiece.

Ready for what, I hear you say…! For feeding your mind with what will SHAPE you and MAKE you, instead of what could break you. Being positive in life isn’t easy but it is very simple. It can be very empowering, and you can find so much self-belief, confidence and happiness by doing so.

So how do you become positive? Read on to find out…

Tell us about your business The PEPP Method is an effective communication tool which encourages positive, empowering and self-confident communication. It supports and improves self-worth and esteem, productiveness, verbal and non-verbal communication for all ages. I founded this method over 12 years ago, however 12 months ago I focused on amalgamating the experience and information I had and created an easily understood, 4 step method which anyone can use. What is PEPP? Positivity Empowerment Power Productivity With the current awareness of mental health and wellness support needed within communities, businesses and education, The PEPP Method provides a base for effective communication to understand, support and empower yourself and others too. Following it can only produce one outcome: a more positive, empowered, confident and productive person. I use The PEPP Method at home, in business and now deliver sessions during PSHE and Well-Being areas of the curriculum. All pupils are given a workbook that becomes their ‘Life-Handbook’ which they can refer to, change as necessary and grow through life’s challenges that they may come across. Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? 12 years ago, when I started teaching people to ice skate, I found people came to the ice rinks and were immediately fearful of getting on the ice or had fallen badly and therefore

wanted to skate but couldn’t get over the fall. So rather than teach people the technique I taught their mindset. I worked on their ability to be positive, empowering the person and showing them their inner strength to be productive. My reasons for creating this official method, now used in education, was also due to my experiences as a parent with a child in the educational system being told they would never amount to anything worthwhile. Soul destroying to hear but this only made us all stronger and more resilient to life’s curved balls! There was no way I was willing to accept someone in their position could say something so potentially destroying to a child. How many children do you havetell us a bit about your family. I have 2 awesome and comical children, Tobey and Emilia. Tobey has just started 6th form and Emilia is in Reception. After 14 years of muddy rugby pitches, I thought I was on the ‘home-run’ with a daughter who adores pink and sparkles! However, I now find myself still standing on muddy fields watching her horse-ride or in gymnastic centres competing! I say comical because they both just love life and enjoy every day as it comes. They bounce harmless hilarity off each other, they’re quick witted and sensitive enough to know where the line is. They always keeping us entertained no matter what! How do you juggle childcare? Juggling childcare – that’s the best way to put being a working parent. Juggling is the only word that perfectly explains childcare needs and working parents!

Positivity is the practice of being optimistic. Optimism is the hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something. The best way to start your journey to being positive is to create 3 sentences you can say to yourself

I devoted my undivided attention to them both for the 1st 3 years of their lives, until they started full-time school. Once in full-time school I then only worked part time as I my desire was to be able to drop off and pick my children up from school, take them to activities or just go for a hot chocolate on a Friday evening as a treat! When Emilia came along I did the same again. I was now fully self-employed, working on my own terms and able to take time out. Being employed and transitioning to self-employment was the hardest because I had to work on my ‘daysoff’ and build up business this way. Holidays are the trickiest, however having a good family network, friends whom support us and a handful of fabulous holiday clubs are all worth their weight in gold. Although I do prefer to organise and work my business around them rather than rely on childcare to help me out. What's been your biggest challenge & how have you overcome it? The biggest challenge has been to stay focused despite the knock backs as a parent and in business. One thing I’ve learnt is that no

every day. These are what we call ‘mantra’s’ or ‘affirmations’ These are incredible. They can be about anything at all. Sports, family, school, yourself, friends, a life situation, literally anything you wish. So for example I say the following every day; I am so grateful for the roof over my head, my loving family and friends and the amazing life we live. You could use this too. When I feel life isn’t quite going the way I hoped it would to go, I say to myself 3 great things that have

happened in the last 24 hours, or 3 great things about myself. This lifts my mind away from the feeling of lack (which is the way I hoped for) and shifts my mindset to the good things I already have in my life – almost like regenerating a happy, grateful feeling. Sometimes in life it is difficult to realise and remember how amazing it is that every day we wake up we get the opportunity to experience another day in the beautiful country we live in, a day with our family and friends, another day with unknown opportunities that may come our way. When life isn’t going how we hoped it would go, remember this: Everything that happens to us is what’s meant to be. What we do, say or think won’t change it, because we make the decisions we are meant to make. By accepting this we take out the frustrations of life and become incredible accepting of the way things are. We open our minds to seeing the beauty which we already have.

matter what, you believe in it, go for it. Never let anyone or anything get in your way. I’ve found working from home hard because I can always find some housework to do.

Materialistic things are not what helps us find our happiness, but the ability to accept and create our feelings within of happiness, joy, love, self-belief and confidence. And we do this through our mantra’s and affirmations daily. My family and I send a positive affirmation of gratitude and thanks each day. When someone feels sad or down, these affirmations and gratitude’s lift each other up. We then remind each other of the great things in life that cost us nothing. They calm us down into a happy space which helps us help others to see life with thanks not need. So if there’s one thing I urge you to remember that is to set affirmations of thanks, share your thanks and gratitude with each other, say something great about someone, help at least one person each day and Bring The Joy into yours and someone else’s life each day.

With love and Positivity

The only thing stopping yourself is yourself. It’s taken me 3 years, a life and business coach, several house moves and overcoming many challenges to be in a headspace of feeling that everything and anything is possible despite what you think. I’m the kind of person who won’t let anything stand in my way because where there’s a will, there’s a way. What's the one piece of advice you would give up other mums wanting to start their own business? Do it! Go for it! Never Ever Give Up, EVER!. Honestly, that’s my best advice. There are enough people

Heart Biscuits Biscuits are the go-to baking activity in our house. The kids love getting involved in every step, mixing, rolling, pressing out shapes and of course, eating the dough! You will need 2 baking sheets, well greased or lined with baking paper, and a small heart cookie cutter. Preheat oven to 180°C or Gas mark 4 Giant bowl at the ready! Mix the butter and sugar together until combined, then stir in the egg and vanilla. Pour in the flour and mix until you have a fairly stiff dough. Separate the dough into 2 equal sized balls. Wrap one in cling film ad set to one side. Add a few drops of food colour to the other and mix until the dough is fully coloured. Roll out the pink dough and cut heart shapes with the cutter. Then arrange these on top of each other to form a stack. Wrap gently in cling film and pop in the freezer for 20-30 minutes until solid. Remove the cling film and gently press the uncoloured dough around the heart stack to form a large sausage of dough. If you are using sprinkles, press these around the edges of the dough. Wrap again in film and chill at the back of the fridge for 30 minutes. When firm remove from the film and Slice rounds of the dough horizontally about 2-3cm thick. Arrange well spaced on the lined baking trays and pop into the oven. Bake at 180°C for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are turning golden. Enjoy when cool.

Wisp – a Story of Hope

Written by Amnesty CILIP honour winner Zana Frallion llustrated by Greenway Medal winner Graham Baker-Smith. Publisher: Orchard. A beautiful moving story combining the power of the imagination with the realities of living in a refugee camp. The story centers on Idris, a young refugee whose entire short life has been spent within the camp. It is young Idris alone who spots a wisp trampled in the dust. As the wisp flitters from person to person distant memories reignite in their eyes as they remember when they once had aspirations and could dream. Now these have been extinguished as they half exist locked in a fight for basic survival in a twilight world. This fight has isolated them from each other and broken their bonds of community. Despite having lost virtually everything the wisp stirs memories that rekindle the shattered human spirit and wish for better things. And with their souls uplifted, the inhabitants of the camp start to reconnect with each other again. For Idris the wisp doesn’t rekindle memories for he is too young to yet have anything memorable imprinted in his mind but instead a stirring of strong hope that he has a future outside this way of life. The wisp signifies the promise of hope in the figure of Idris himself. For the young have the resilience and strength to adapt, as well as the promise of unfilled expectations in a future life not yet unfolded. And this we see in the new green shoots of a plant pushing its way out of the barren soil. The illustrations are presented in dark, muted colours that manage to capture the poignancy of human suffering without falling into total despair by the illumining light of the wisp glowing in the dark. The words flow with a poetic beauty that everyone young and older will enjoy. Ideal to inspire you at the start of 2019.

Today’s topic is ear infections - a very common and painful complaint. You will probably have come across 2 types of ear infections - otitis externa which occurs in the ear canal and otitis media which occurs in the small space behind the eardrum (the middle ear). This article concentrates on otitis media. How does an ear infection occur? The middle ear space sometimes becomes filled with mucus, often during a cold. This can result in a dull ear ache which is self-resolving and eased by painkillers. If the child is well, then ear infection is unlikely. However, the mucus may become infected by germs (bacteria or viruses) which is then termed an ear infection.

Symptoms of middle ear infection: pain, but note that babies can’t complain of pain so may be seen to rub their ear(s), be hot+ irritable and cry more than usual High temperature dulled hearing for a few days nausea/vomiting/off their food sometimes the eardrum bursts (perforates). This lets out infected mucus and the ear becomes runny (a discharge) for a few days. Children often report that the pain of earache eases after the eardrum has burst and they feel better. This is due to the pressure being relieved behind the eardrum. What is the treatment of ear infection? Antibiotics are usually not indicated straight away. This is because the infection usually clears within 2-3 days by itself. When an ear infection first develops it is common for us GPs to advise a 'wait and see' approach for 2-3 days, using painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease the pain and wait for infection to clear. In most cases it does and no follow-up is needed. However if it does not, then a review is needed. The exception to the above

is when the child has a severe infection from the start, is very young, unwell or has a discharge. Can I take my child swimming with an ear infection? It’s best to avoid swimming during the illness to prevent water getting into the ear. Water can cause more discomfort to the ear as well as introduce bacteria. Your child will probably be feeling unwell so won’t fancy swimming anyway. If the ear drum perforates, then you need to keep the child’s ear dry and avoid swimming for 4-6 weeks til the ear drum heals. Your child needs to be examined by your GP to confirm healing and to be told it’s safe to resume swimming. What if you’re supposed to be flying on holiday and your child has an ear infection? The official advice is that active otitis media, effusions (fluid in the middle ear) or recent surgery are contraindications to flying but not many people would cancel a holiday for the first reason. This is where you need to contact your own GP who can advise you on your personal situation. If you do fly, then sucking on a sweet during take off and landing can help balance pressures on either side of the eardrums and minimise pain, as well as using painkillers. As I mentioned last time, this article is no substitute for advice from your own GP if your child is unwell. Please see your GP if your child becomes more ill, does not improve over 2-3 days, or develops any symptoms that you are not sure about.

INTERNET Safety Advice from PC Paul South Wales Police

PC Paul Harry is a schools liaison officer with the South Wales Police providing lessons and assemblies for schools across Swansea as part of a dedicated team of officers. The aim is to keep children safe inside of school and outside of school also. The lessons are varied across various subjects including anti social behaviour, substance misuse, personal safety, anti bullying, internet safety and safe relationship. One of the most topical issues we face is the use of social media. While social media can be a positive thing to use it does bring much concern in that its use is abused with arguments between friends developing, children being isolated from friendship groups and inappropriate messages and pictures being sent.

‘Think for three seconds before sending any message’

PC Paul says “While the use of social media can be a great way to keep in contact with friends we must use it appropriately. I always inform the pupils I deliver lessons to that they should just think for 3 seconds before sending any message. If you think the message may upset, frighten someone or you would not like your own parents to see the message then it is not wise to send. Once a message is sent then a digital footprint is created which is out there potentially forever.

fan u Gy mr Cy

There are various social media app’s out there to use. The most popular seen being used within Swansea currently are the likes of Snap Chat, Instagram and You Tube. This can be a great way of keeping in contact with one another and also learning. You should not accept friend requests or start conversations with people you do not know in the real world as they are STRANGERS. Unkind messages may be sent by these people and if you receive one you should always tell a trusted adult who will help you. You can save the message to show them and also block them to stop them from sending further messages to you. Always remember to stay SMART when online which will keep you safe.

Robbie and David have used up all their life savings in their quest to save the lives of all the animals that are brought to them. It’s estimated that the sanctuary costs hundreds of pounds a day to run, including vet fees, animal feed and paid staff. They currently employ a few part time staff to help with the work and have the costs of additional grazing. They also have a very small army of volunteers. Despite friends and volunteers having helped the sanctuary get more mediacoverage, online on places like Facebook and Justgiving, without sufficient funding they fear for the future.

Robbie and David are the owners and founders of Woodfield Animal Sanctuary, Woodfield is tucked away on Welshmoor within North Gower. They moved to Gower with plans to retire with their small family of animals, running an animal sanctuary was certainly not part of their plans! They originally bought the small holding and moved to Woodfield with their horses, 11 rescue dogs and twenty cats. Retirement plans drastically changed when rescue animals started arriving. A few turned into many, many more and now years later they have quite a menagerie. These quieter sought days now include 7am starts working through into late nights on their own animal sanctuary, now home to over 70 horses, forty-five hand reared lambs, fifteen dogs, thirty-five cats, two goats, two cattle, six pigs and five cockerels.

The sanctuary receives no official funding for these animals, yet provides them a home for life, food, shelter and a warm bed every night. The sanctuary is a non-profit organisation yet also rents additional grazing land from local farmers and is a sevenday-a-week operation. The majority of these animals would not still be alive if it was not for Woodfield Animal Sanctuary. Almost all of these animals will live their natural lives at Woodfield, although a small number of younger healthy animalshave been re homed. They include some that have been rehomed within Hengoed Court Care Home in Winch Wen, who have adopted three ponies and three sheep. These rescues, who would not be here without Woodfield, have brought joy to the residents lives. Woodfield is home to several ponies in their late twenties and thirties and one believed to be in his forties living out their golden years at the sanctuary.

They are now seeking public support to keep the sanctuary going. YOU CAN HELP BY : Sharing the Facebook page and website, Inform your friends, volunteer, consider setting up a monthly donation £1 a month goes a long way, ‘adopt’ an animal, donate animals items, e.g. head-collars, feed, blankets, horse rugs.
