Meet the Dames...
This year in Neath Port Talbot, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to a festive family trip to the theatre. The Princess Royal Theatre, Pontardawe Arts Centre and the Gwyn Hall will all be hosting their very own family friendly Pantomimes from November 2018 until January 2019. Prepare to laugh, boo and hiss when you tick a visit to your local pantomime off the Christmas Bucket list this year! We are giving you the chance to get to know the hilarious Dames behind the Panto magic…
The Princess Royal Theatre – Widow Twankey Pontardawe Arts Centre – Sara lee Gwyn Hall – Dame Trott
How long does it take you to get ready? Trott: 1 hour ish depending if I’ve partied all night and have enough poly filler and paint! Twankey: Once the poly filler sets I’m good to go!! Sara: An absolute age! When I was young no time at all, I was all pink and dimples, but now I'm all drink and pimples.
What is your Dame’s Bra Size? Trott: 42 DD when inflated to its maximum size, plus VAT Twankey: “Double TT” (They are Bigger than Richard Branson’s balloons) Sara: I've never measured the boys. I do call them Ant and Dec though because they pop up everywhere, and everyone loves them.
Name 3 items in your handbag: Trott: Lipstick, jelly beans and canal No.5… a girl loves to smell lush!! Twankey: Glitter, moths and Zac Effron! Sara: Lippy, a bag of Polyfilla and a trowel.
What’s your Catchphrase? Trott: Alright my lovlies, where’s your smile! Twankey: Where there’s a Dame there’s a claim! Sara: Who are you? I never remember a face.
What are you looking forward to about this years pantomime? Trott: Having a good natter with the audience and lovely kiddie winks, I love a good gossip AND a garish sequin frock! Twankey: Stealing the show obviously… I’ve got some fabulous outfits lined up for you! As well as telling jokes only the naughty Mammys and daddys get!! Sara: I love seeing people laugh and switch off from the outside world, enthralled in the magic of pantomime. It's always a highlight to see the audience and their smiling faces!

Christmas Mince Pies Christmas time is art and craft time for little ones. From salt dough decorations to homemade cards, your kids will be getting their hands into all sorts over the festive period. Nothing says Christmas quite like a proper mince pie though, and these are so yummy they will be the best thing your kids make this year! Buttery sweet pastry and a spicy fruity filling makes these mice pies a winter winner for the whole family.
How to make: You will need a 12 hole muffin tray, rolling pin, large round cutter and optional small star cookie cutter. Preheat the oven to 180â—ŚC Gas Mark 4 Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and then the beaten egg. Bring together to form a firm dough (Add a splash of water as needed) Roll out to Âź inch thickness (apx width of a pound coin) and cut 12 circles using a large round cutter and 12 stars using a small star cutter. Place your pastry circles gently into each hole in the tray and fill with a heaped teaspoon of mincemeat. Top with a star and bake in the centre of the oven for 20 minutes or until the pastry is golden. Allow to cool in the tin slightly before removing.

FLU It’s that time of year again when seasonal flu hits. Here is some information about flu, the symptoms associated with it & how to look after yourselves when it affects your family.
* Stiff neck, headache, dislike of bright lights Drowsiness and/or confusion.
Winter Influenza ( Flu) is caused by one of the various strains of influenza virus & the prevailing type varies each year. In most people it is a self-limiting illness, which usually last 5-7 days. Most cases can be managed by resting at home & following simple advice, but in some cases it can be more serious-see below.
* Chest pains, coughing up blood or blood-stained phlegm, shortness of breath
Flu is passed from person to person by droplets released when someone with the infection sneezes or coughs. You can also catch it by touching a surface where the virus has been deposited. Common symptoms are high temperature, aches & pains in muscles & joints, sweating, nausea, a cough, headache, sore throat+sneezing. It can also cause lack of energy, loss of appetite & poor feeding. Sometimes a high temperature ( fever) can result in a febrile convulsion ( a seizure caused by the high temperature) which can be frightening for parents. When to seek medical help? The general advice is to seek medical advice at any time that you’re worried about yourself/child. However, certain warning signs should prompt you to seek help immediately as it may mean you have another illness or complications of Flu. The following symptoms are ‘red (serious)flags’: * a rash particular if dark red spots develop that do not fade when pressed ( called a non-blanching rash)
* Repeatedly vomiting
How to manage symptoms at home. Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen can lower your temperature, and also ease aches and pains. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Throat lozenges and saline nasal drops may be helpful to ease nose and throat symptoms.Carefully dispose of used tissues to prevent spread of infection. Wash hands regularly. Antibiotics are not effective against Flu. They kill bacteria not viruses. However, they may be necessary if you develop a bacterial complication ( a secondary infection) from the Flu If you are normally well then you are unlikely to develop complications. However, certain groups of people are more at risk of complications, i.e the elderly, those with chronic lung conditions such as asthma/cystic fibrosis, those with chronic medical conditions like heart/liver/ kidney problems/diabetes, those with poor immune systems & pregnant women regardless of how healthy they are. These groups of people are usually offered the annual flu vaccine. This article is not a substitute for advice from your own GP. Here’s wishing you all a happy, healthy winter.

Get outdoors this Winter... A study carried out in 2010 found that spending 20 minutes outside nature is enough to significantly increase our vitality levels. So take the kids for a winter walk in the park or through the woods and, while they burn off some of their energy, you can restore yours. You’ll boost your immune systems
There are so many cold bugs going round this time of year, and when we spend most of our time indoors with the windows shut they spread much more quickly and easily from person to person. Spending more time outside lets our children get away from these bugs and germs and reduces their chances of getting ill from them. It’s also been found that children who play outdoors and get muddy and dirty have stronger immune systems.
You’ll get a hit of vitamin D A lot of people find they suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in the winter months, making them feel sleepier, anxious and generally a bit low.
It’s thought that a big factor in SAD is lack of natural light in the winter. So getting out in the sunshine as much as possible can help us to feel better. An extra benefit for the whole family is that you’ll all get a dose of vitamin D from the sunlight.
Vitamin D is important for children as it supports a healthy immune system, as well as helping their bodies absorb calcium which promotes healthy bone growth.
It also increases the amount of serotonin in the brain which makes us all feel happier and less stressed.
You’ll all sleep better
Another benefit to getting outside in the natural light is that our body clocks stay on track. Research has found that spending between half an hour and an hour outside in direct sunlight can help us to fall asleep quicker, and wake up less in the nights. If you head to one of Swansea’s gorgeous beaches for a family walk you’ll get even more of a benefit as far as sleep goes. A study carried out by the National Trust found that people who went for a walk by the sea slept 47 minutes longer than normal. While people who walked the same distance inland only slept for 12 minutes more.
Let the kids get their exercise
It can be hard for children to get the kind of exercise they need when they’re stuck inside. Playing outside lets them move more freely, and use their bodies in different ways than if they’re inside, which helps with their gross motor development. Outdoor activities like riding bikes, playing in the park, and games of football are all great forms of aerobic exercise for children, as well as helping to build their muscle strength. With so many beaches, parks and
woods in the Swansea area, and so many great benefits to getting out in the fresh air, there really is no excuse for staying inside with the kids this winter!

Here is a selection of books ideal for Christmas Gifts! There are some great books around from established and new authors. Here’s some to look out for.
Picture Book (Under 6 years) Oi Duck Billed Platypus Written by Kes Grey and illustrated by Jim Field A very humorous picture book by the multi award winning Kes Grey and Jim Field. The book starts with a Frog talking to a Duck Billed Platypus and trying to find a rhyme for his name. It then descends into off beat irreverent delicious silliness that children will love as all the animals try rhyming their names with something to sit on. For example Clive sits on a hive, Ozzie sits on a cozzie! By the time we get to the final pages, and Kangaroo has just given his impossible last names to rhyme Frog just says “Sit where you like!” Picture Book (Under 6 years) Mimi Rabbit Not Lost Written and illustrated by John Bond Mother Rabbit is baking a cake and daughter Mimi can’t wait for it to be ready but the only problem is there are no berries for the top. Mimi can’t have cake without berries! So off she goes to find some. She looks everywhere and so engrossed in her pursuit of fruit that she doesn’t notice the danger she is putting herself as well as berries that she is missing as
she travels fixated on cake! Cake! Cake! Then she finds what she is a looking for – a berry! She takes her prize back home but once Mother Rabbit offers Mimi the now berried cake, Mimi decides that would like ice cream instead. A lovely understated humour. Little Mimi is the real embodiment of a toddler as one moment she is obsessed with berries but soon after shows the attention span of a little child she has changes from one thing to another. A great debut picture book from a new creative talent. Chapter Book (7 – 9 years) Winnie and Wilbur – The Santa Surprise Written by Laura Owen and illustrated by Korky Paul Winnie is preparing for Christmas when she suddenly has a thought. Who gives Santa presents? It seems unfair when his job is to fill gazillions of other stockings, if he gets nothing. Winnie asks around for a few ideas including speaking to the little ordinaries at school, and the giant who lives next door. She tries to magic up a few things herself including a nice big bear for Santa but oops instead it ends up as a live polar bear! There are a few more hiccups on the way and it seems that Santa won’t get any presents after all this effort. However it all turns out well in the end!
A really nice story for Christmas from this familiar book character that is a fun filled zip along. The multi award winning, Korky Paul’s illustrations are fantastic as usual. Novel (8 – 12 years) The Train to Impossible Places Written by P G Bell This book may you remind you of a mish mash of elements of many other fantasy books but the end product is pulled into is a highly creative and imaginative piece. The debut novel of welsh author P G Bell is an excellent accomplishment and he has clearly put a lot of thought and work into this from start to finish from the characters to all the magical ingredients that weave themselves into a wonderful ride as the pace builds. When eleven year old Suzy finds a train in her house at midnight, she finds herself embroiled on no ordinary trip as it’s the Train to Impossible Places carrying mail throughout the realms, she finds herself delivering a package to the evil Lady Crepuscula. And a few others for the list are The Last Chance Hotel by newcomer Nicki Thornton; I bet I can make you laugh: the Funniest Poems Around by dynamic poet Joshua Seigal; Amelia Fang and the Memory Thief by the very talented Laura Ellen Anderson.

Are you ready? Ready for what, I hear you say…! For feeding your mind with what will SHAPE you and MAKE you, instead of what could break you. Being positive in life isn’t easy but it is very simple. It can be very empowering, and you can find so much self-belief, confidence and happiness by doing so. So how do you become positive?
Positivity is the practice of being optimistic. Optimism is the hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something. The best way to start your journey to being positive is to create 3 sentences you can say to yourself every day. These are what we call ‘mantra’s’ or ‘affirmations’ These are incredible. They can be about anything at all. Sports, family, school, yourself, friends, a life situation, literally anything you wish.
So for example I say the following every day; I am so grateful for the roof over my head, my loving family and friends and the amazing life we live. You could use this too. When I feel life isn’t quite going the way I hoped it would to go, I say to myself 3 great things that have happened in the last 24 hours, or 3 great things about myself. This lifts my mind away from the feeling of lack (which is the way I hoped for) and shifts my mindset to the good things I already have in my life – almost like regenerating a happy, grateful feeling. Sometimes in life it is difficult to realise and remember how amazing it is that every day we wake up we get the opportunity to experience another day in the beautiful country we live in, a day with our family and friends, another day with unknown opportunities that may come our way.
When life isn’t going how we hoped it would go, remember this:
Everything that happens to us is what’s meant to be. What we do, say or think won’t change it, because we make the decisions we are meant to make. By accepting this we take out the frustrations of life and become incredible accepting of the way things are.
We open our minds to seeing the beauty which we already have. Materialistic things are not what helps us find our happiness, but the ability to accept and create our feelings within of happiness, joy, love, self-belief and confidence. And we do this through our mantra’s and affirmations daily. My family and I send a positive affirmation of gratitude and thanks each day. When someone feels sad or down, these affirmations and gratitude’s lift each other up. We then remind each other of the great things in life that cost us nothing. They calm us down into a happy space which helps us help others to see life with thanks not need. So if there’s one thing I urge you to remember that is to set affirmations of thanks, share your thanks and gratitude with each other, say something great about someone, help at least one person each day and Bring The Joy into yours and someone else’s life each day.
With love and Positivity Jennifer Barnfield Positivity and Visualisation Practitioner
