Christmas at Wales Millennium Centre

T

his Christmas, Wales Millennium Centre will be bustling with festive fun for all the family.

From late November, a Fairytale Forest will be taking root in the Centre’s foyer. With free craft workshops every weekend, participants can create plenty of trees, plants, flowers and foliage to fill out the forest. Taking inspiration from the world of fairytale, stories will be woven into the forest as it grows. From giant bean-stalks to gingerbread houses, big bad wolves to Rapunzel’s tower, there’ll be a new fairytale to explore each weekend. (Every Sat & Sun 28 Nov - 20 Dec & 21 - 23 Dec). On the Donald Gordon Stage, Shrek The Musical (8 Dec - 10 Jan) is the perfect show for all the family. Join unlikely hero Shrek and his loyal steed Donkey as they embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from a fire breathing, love-sick dragon. Add the diminutive Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits, and a biscuit with attitude, and you’ve got the biggest, brightest musical comedy around. Featuring all new songs as well as cult Shrek anthem, I’m a Believer, Shrek The Musical brings all

the much-loved DreamWorks characters to life, in an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza. Not forgetting Father Christmas, he’ll be busy working away in his beautiful grotto, reading through his letters, deciding who’s been naughty or nice, checking his maps, and eating a few mince pies! Come along and visit him for free, see what goes into his preparations for the big night of Christmas deliveries and create a letter for him so he remembers what it is you really want this year. And because all those preparations are hard work, Father Christmas will be popping in to ffresh to re-fuel with afternoon tea. Join him for sandwiches and plenty of festive treats. (Grotto visits and afternoon tea: Every Sat & Sun 28 Nov - 20 Dec & 21 - 23 Dec). Find out more at www.wmc.org.uk/ christmas

H

ere are a selection of Christmas books from charming stories that captivate the spirit of Christmas to cheerful zany humour.

This Little Piggy went singing By Margaret Wild (Author) and Deborah Niland (Illustrator) Publisher: Allen & Unwin. This delightful picture book’s premise is based on different versions of the foot tweaking traditional action rhyme, This Little Piggy Very simple and very sweet. Follow these little piggies as they have a myriad of activities in their run up to Christmas.

Great for reading aloud, it is fun and easy for small children to follow. There are ten versions of This Little Piggy, all finishing with various musical instrument punch lines. The final Little Santa Piggy going ho, ho, ho all the way home with presents for all. Guaranteed to get little ones giggling on Christmas morning.

Just Right for Christmas By Birdie Black (Author) and Rosalind Beardshaw (Illustrator) Publisher: Nosy Crow

A charming clever picture book celebrating Christmas and the joy of the giving. On Christmas Eve the King buys a large roll of beautiful bright red cloth. It’s so soft and Christmassy and would be ideal to make a grand cloak for his daughter. The maids make a lovely cloak and leave the scraps outside the backdoor. Jenny the kitchen maid spots the bundle on her way home. Great – cloth to make a jacket for her ma! She leaves her small scraps outside the backdoor. Bertie Badger is delighted! He can make a fantastic hat for his pa! And there’s still more recycling that can be done from the pile of diminishing scraps, Samuel Squirrel and Milly Mouse both make gifts from them and not a piece is wasted. What fine presents that large roll of cloth has made for all of them!

The Christmas Eve Tree By Delia Huddy (Author) and Emily Sutton (Illustrator) Publisher: Walker Books.

This illustrated story tells the tale of the little fir tree. No one wants the crooked and stunted Christmas tree left on the shelf in the store, and it’s given to a homeless boy on Christmas Eve; it only lasts a short time. The tree is saved by a road sweeper who plants it in the park. Unlike his fellow trees which end up on a bonfire. This little tree grows up to be a magnificent, sturdy Fir overlooking the park where visitors can sit or play. A magical story beautifully captured with wonderful illustrations, The Christmas Eve Tree is one story of hope whatever your humble beginnings.

The Smelly Sprout By Allan Plenderleith Publisher: Ravette Publishing Ltd

Allan Plenderleith has taken the universally derided sprout as figure of seasonal fun and turned it into a classic. If you don’t like sprouts then think again This heartwarming tale might change your mind! Unwanted the Smelly Sprout is thrown out into the snow on Christmas Day. Further encounters with various rude individuals such as a noseless snowman and a greedy fox add to his pile of rejections. The Smelly Sprout is a witty short story beautiful told with accompanying simple drawings. Other stories in the series are The Silly Satsuma and The Christmas Carrot

Mum to Mumpreneur Tell us about your business:

Emma

My business is called Joyfully Crafted. I create individual and unique pieces of handmade jewellery and gifts. I work from home and sell at craft fairs as well as having an Etsy shop, website and facebook page. I can do bespoke Jewellery, as well as bulk orders for birthdays and have lovely items ideal for party bags or stocking fillers. I’m due to complete a silversmith course very soon, which will help me to expand the type of jewellery I make to sell and hopefully grow my business.

Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business?

My name is Emma and i am married with 3 boys aged 8, 6 and 4. I have always been interested in crafts and I love learning new skills and trying out new things. I learnt the basics of jewellery making a few years ago at a craft workshop. Then 16 months ago my youngest son become very unwell, with a serious illness from which he is still recovering. As a result, I have had to give up my job as a nurse to care for my son at home. It was during this time that I

revisited jewellery making, as a means of escape from everything that had happened. I have developed a love for handcrafting by creating jewellery, sewing and crochet. I started making jewellery to sell at craft and school fairs and had been doing that for just over a year when I started an Etsy shop and launched my business Joyfully Crafted. Being able to do something creative from home that gives me the flexibility to fit in around the kids has been great. I do miss nursing but I know it wouldn’t offer the right balance for me and my family at the moment.

What do you like to do to relax? I love to hide away from the noise and chaos that 3 boys create with my crochet or sewing machine! I love spending time in our garden growing veg and looking after our four chickens. I honestly wouldn’t know how to get through a typical week without my crochet hook close to hand! Being creative is such an outlet to deal with stress and is a positive way in which you can put any negative energies you have to good use. Creativity can provide a positive focus amiss the craziness and stress of life. Visit my Etsy shop for some of my items or email/facebook me for more details. facebook.com/joyfullycraftedwales etsy.com/uk/shop/joyfullycraftedwales joyfullycraftedwales@gmail.com

Host A Jewellery Party... I also do adult jewellery parties, which is a great excuse to get some friends around for a glass of wine and browse some jewellery! I can also offer a bespoke service on the night for a truly unique piece of jewellery. Hosts receive a free gift.

Meningitis

M

eningitis is an inflammation of the lining that covers the brain and spinal cord (the meninges). It is usually caused by the germs from a bacterial or viral infection. Most cases in the UK are caused by a bacterium called meningococcus.Other less common causes include pneumococcus, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The infection that causes meningitis often causes a blood infection as well (septicaemia). Meningococcus is a common bacterium living harmlessly in the nose and throat of about 1 in 4 people. This bacterium does not survive outside the body. Close contact is needed to pass it on to others, such as intimate kissing, coughing, or sneezing near to others. Rarely, this bacterium overcomes the body’s immune system and gets into the blood to cause meningitis and/ or septicaemia. It is not clear why a few people are prone to serious illness and many other people are carriers of the same bacterium but have no ill effect. Meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia are serious illnesses and well known because of the media coverage associated with outbreaks. There are at least 12 ‘subgroups’B, C, W and Y have historically been the most common in the UK. Meningococcal infection most commonly leads to meningitis or septicaemia. It can also cause pneumonia, septic arthritis, inflammation of heart muscle/valves, & conjunctivitis. Subgroup C’s contribution has fallen dramatically since a childhood vaccination was introduced – it has been adopted in the UK’s routine immunisation schedule since November 1999. In addition to direct immunity, MenC vaccination also provides indirect ‘herd’ immunity. Herd immunity is a form of immunity that occurs when the vaccination of a significant portion of a population (they become immune) provides a measure of protection for individuals who have not developed immunity. The spread of the contagious disease is contained. Serogroup B is now responsible for 80% of cases in the UK; a new vaccination for this group was licensed in the UK in 2013 and it has been introduced into the UK’s routine childhood immunisation schedule for all infants born since July 2015.

Incidence of meningococcal disease is highest in those aged under 1, followed by those aged 1-5, with a second peak of risk occurring in those aged 15-19 (particularly if living in crowded or closed communities, e.g, barracks and student halls).

The symptoms of meningitis: Often

develop quickly, over a few hours or so. Initially, in children, symptoms non-specific such as feeling and looking unwell, fever, being tired and feeling sick. However, three early warning symptoms that appear, often before the more classic symptoms, are: leg pains, cold hands/feet, pale/dusky/ blue colour of the skin around the lips. Most people are aware of the classical symptoms of meningitis, i.e neck stiffness and rash, but please note that these may not occur. If you suspect meningitis - get medical help immediately. The typical rash associated with meningococcal infection is red/purple. It starts as small spots anywhere on the body, growing to become blotchy/bruises which do not fade when pressed (unlike many other rashes) known as the glass test. Place a clear glass firmly on one of the spots or blotches. If the rash does not fade and you can still see it through the glass, get medical help immediately. The rash is a sign of septicaemia. It may not occur with meningitis alone.

Other symptoms that may occur in babies include: Excessive crying, often

high-pitched or moaning and different to their usual cry. Fast breathing, or unusual patterns of breathing. High temperature Will not take feeds or vomiting, being irritable - especially when picked up and handled. Drowsiness/sleepiness does not wake easily. Jerky movements/stiffness may occur or the complete opposite occurs and the baby is floppy. Other symptoms that may occur in older children and adults include high temperature and shivering, neck stiffness, headache, muscle aches and pains, dislike of bright light, drowsiness or confusion, vomiting.

Treatment: Urgently, with antibiotic injections.

Blood tests and a sample of the fluid that surrounds the spinal cord (a lumbar puncture) may be taken. These tests aim to confirm the diagnosis and identify the bacterium responsible. The antibiotic may be changed depending on the test results. The outlook (prognosis) often depends on how soon antibiotics are given after the illness starts. Most people make a good recovery if treated early enough. There are several complications that may occur after having meningitis. These include Hearing Loss, this is the most common complication, Learning and Behaviour problems, Epilepsy, & Kidney problems.
