Welcome to the bumper 3rd birthday summer edition of Kidscene! This edition is absolutely jam-packed with some fantastic days out and ideas to keep the kids busy during the long summer holidays. A few months ago, we bought a National Trust annual family membership and I have been amazed by all the beautiful parks in S.Wales that I never even knew existed! I can’t urge you enough to look into their membership and start visiting all the amazing sites on our doorstep. Current favourites of mine are Dinefwr Park and Colby Woodland Gardens! Check out the NT map on page .....to find your next day out. All I want to say is, I hope you have a lovely holiday whether it’s home or away. Enjoy...

Summer Holidays The Effect on Learning We at Kip McGrath Swansea are running Summer School in August for students aged 4-18. We offer a wide range of programmes and would be happy to discuss your requirements. Teachers and students are about to breathe a sigh of relief as the long summer holidays are nearly here. Time to relax, watch TV, play on the play station and generally take life much slower..... but what will happen to your child’s learning over the summer holidays?

Make learning fun. Baking a cake can incorporate measuring ingredients (Maths) and following instructions (English).

The tradition of schools breaking up for six weeks in the summer began when Britain was a large agricultural community and it was intended to allow children the time to work on the farm and assist in getting in the harvest. This is obviously not the case for the majority of our families nowadays.

If you go to the supermarket ask children to add up the cost of items, practice rounding or calculate change.

Research shows that for most students the long summer break results in their attainment dropping. When they return to school in September, they have not stood still in their attainment, they have actually lost some of the skills they had acquired the previous year. The loss in attainment can be anywhere from 2-6 months. I notice in Kip McGrath, that the children who have had no learning in the summer take the first month getting their skills back to where they had been at the end of July. Just think when you haven’t driven your car for an extended length of time, the next time you sit behind the steering wheel it often feels odd and you may need to pause to think what you are doing. This is not too dissimilar to children’s learning achievements. If they take a prolonged break from learning they will become rusty. For children who find learning difficult or who are reluctant learners they will feel apprehensive about returning to school in September. What can parents do to help? Ensure that children engage in learning tasks in the holidays and make them fun. Encourage them to continue with reading, spelling, tables and Maths activities. Send your children to summer school to ensuring the student does not lose ground in their learning.

Take a walk in the countryside and see how many trees you can identify or which mini beasts you can find.

If you would like to enrol your child in a weekly 80 minute tuition session over the holidays, just call Claire on 01792 299996 and you can book in for a free assessment.

Book Reviews PICTURE BOOK: FAMILIES, FAMILIES, FAMILIES! AGE: 3 – 7 YEARS AUTHOR: SUZANNE LANG ILLUSTRATOR: MAX LANG PUBLISHER: RANDOM HOUSE A cheerful and cheeky book depicting the types of families that we can belong to. The family theme is perfectly presented by showing groups of animals depicted in posed portrait photographs. Families consisting of two mums, two dads, a prize winning rose, great aunts, a cat – you name it, there is a family in this book that everyone should be able to identify with. It’s a great way to introduce children to a simple fact of life – that we all come from different backgrounds. The book isn’t asking questions as to why there is such a diversity of family life; it just states families as they are. All that matters is that you love each other. The charming narrative is complemented with delightfully daft animal illustrations. Max Lang shows great attention to detail with each family photograph framed or presented in an appropriate way according the animal. A delightful funny book. CHAPTER BOOK: JOHN SMITH IS NOT BORING! – SIR JOHN THE (MOSTLY) BRAVE. AGE: 7 YEARS + AUTHOR: JOHNNY SMITH ILLUSTRATOR: LAURA ELLEN ANDERSON For some people the name John Smith is not entirely the most imaginative. There must be thousands of Johns on the planet. “The most boring name in history” says his sister, Hayley. After all she’s named after that bright star Hayley’s Comet. Page 19

www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk

How she loves to continually remind him of how common he is. Even his mum says he’s one in a million! However unbeknown to her and the rest of the world, John actually belongs to a special club - the John Smith Club. He can transport himself on magical adventures. This time, he needs to come up with an idea to talk about knights in shining armour for show and tell at school but can’t think of anything. But with the help of his grandfather (also known as John Smith) he takes a trip back in time to defeat Ivan the Terrible and his band of bloodthirsty villains to aid the Queen. That should get his imagination going even if he gets an extra unexpected mission of returning the Queen’s royal ruby in order to save his head! Zany, entertaining story which should strike a chord with any child racking their brains for school homework.

Giveaway!

Kidscene is delighted to be giving away a copy of Dear Tomato: An International Crop of Food and Agricultural poems to one lucky reader! Editor Carol-Ann Hoyte has compiled an enchanting collection of poems themed around one of most people’s favourite topics – food! Its delectable offerings take you from farmyard to table and there is something for everyone whatever your palate. It would also be a great addition to any library, school or teachers book shelf to inspire children to think about the food on our plate and where comes from.

Dr. Louise... Sunburn This Summer edition’s health message is to take care in the sun. While many people enjoy hot weather, high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for older people, young children and those with serious illnesses.

thing as a healthy ‘tan’. If you want tanned skin, consider a fake tan and do not sunbathe or use sunbeds. A tan is the skin’s response to the sun’s damaging rays and is therefore an indicator of sun damage.

Everyone can enjoy the sun safely by keeping out of the heat at the hottest time of the day, avoiding sunburn and staying hydrated with plenty of cool drinks. Top advice for being sun safe:

Most sunburn is superficial - the skin becomes red, hot and painful. In severe cases there may be blistering. After a few days the burnt skin may peel. Initial treatment of sunburn is to cool the skin by sponging it with cool water or soak the affected area in a cool bath or shower for 10 mins. Ensure the person drinks plenty of cold fluids to prevent dehydration. Any plain moisturiser can be used on unbroken skin to help ease discomfort. Paracetamol or ibuprofen will help with pain, if you are able to take them. You should see a doctor if the sunburn is very severe. You should never allow babies or children to develop sunburn. If they do, you should seek medical advice.

Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm. Remember the sun is stronger at higher altitudes, which is why you can burn doing winter sports e.g. skiing (also, because ice and snow reflect a lot of sunlight) Apply sunscreen of at least SPF15 (I always use SPF50 on my daughter) with UVA protection, 20-30 mins before going out in the sun. Re-apply every 2 hours and after swimming. Do not use sunscreeen past the expiry date. Store the product out of the sun as it can cause deterioration of the active protective ingredients within. Do not develop a false sense of security when wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen only partially protects your skin. Using sunscreen does not mean that you can sunbathe for long periods without harm. Wear UV sunglasses, preferably wraparound, to reduce UV exposure to the eyes. Wear light, loosefitting cotton clothes and a wide-brimmed hat. Drink lots of cool drinks, non alcoholic drinks as alcohol dehydrates you. You can burn in the water. Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals. In particular, it is very important to protect children from the sun. The delicate skin of a child (also true for fair-skinned people) is more sensitive to sun damage than the skin of an adult. Some of this damage is temporary, such as sunburn (see below) However, allowing your skin to burn can lead to future problems, such as skin cancer due to longterm skin damage. Remember, there is no such Page 25

Technology and our kids We have all experienced it as parents, telling our kids to finish the Xbox game, put down the ‘tablet’ or switch off the TV. Rarely is it trauma free for all concerned (unless you have a rare little angel!). To help inspire parents help limit ‘screen’ time, here are some tried and tested ways to help you and your child navigate this technology and media drenched world we live in:So lets start with the toughest but most essential one ‘Set the example’, yes it is tough but there is nowhere else to start. You know the saying ‘monkey see, monkey do!’ Children naturally copy what they see. Look at your own screen time and how you use technology.

Now onto the next bit, Be the parent. Now you have sorted out your ‘habit’ it is time to sort out the kids! It is your job to encourage healthy behaviour and stop bad habits forming now while they are young. It won’t be easy to start with, but in the long run they will benefit.

Smart phones: it is now rare to be unconnected. Notice how many times a day you check your phone, your emails, your Facebook account? Where do you check it? Do you get anxious if you can’t access the net? Does it annoy you if you go to a café where there is no Wi-Fi?

Set Limited screen times. Decide set times for screen time, be it tablet, computers, Xbox, TV. Experts recommend no more than 2 hours a day of screen time and this means ALL screens. Many parents allow half an hour a day, whereas other parents have no technology all week and only allow it at weekends when homework, room tidy etc. Then it is limited to an hour. There are time limiter apps on the market which when time is up, keep flashing on the screen and can only be turned off when the child brings the screen to you. Or a invest in a kitchen timer.

Tablets: What do you do after the kids have gone to bed? How many hours do you spend surfing the net, Facebooking, online shopping? How many times do your kids ask you something and you reply ‘wait a minute’ as you just finish off something online! So, is it time for a digital detox? Start by giving yourself set times that you browse the net using your phone, change the settings so that you are not continually getting FB and email updates. Switch the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off when not in use (this will save the battery too!). Don’t use it around the kids, instead try daydreaming, people watching, speak to the person next to you at soft play…or take a book in your bag. If you want to be even more radical, delete the Facebook/Twitter App/ Ebay App off your phone. Try and set yourself tech free days, evenings where you do not connect. Let your friends know in advance, so that they know you are not ignoring if they post or text you! Instead organize a movie or pop into Waterstones and buy ‘The Secret Garden’ by Joanna Bashford (a New York times best seller) a colouring book for grown ups, or take up a craft. Page 27

|

www.kidscenemagazine.co.uk

Encourage other activities: Sometimes children need a nudge and will just gravitate to the TV or tablet as it is easy. Dig out the Lego, Art stuff, Kinnex, books, board games, sporting equipment and put it where they can easily get hold of it. Make suggestions to them. One mother decided on a radical digital detox and they all went cold turkey, initally it was tough for the kids but then they started pulling out all their old toys and it was like a whole new world opening out. Her youngest got out his guitar… 7 years later her now teenage son is heading to Music College. His comment to his mum was ‘hey mum, how good would I have been if I had started playing the guitar when I was younger instead of spending so much time gaming’. Play with your kids. When you have been working all day, or there is cleaning to do, this is easier said

than done. Why not allocate half an hour a day to play with them, get down on the floor and play, kick a ball about or get a board game out. It does take intentionality and selfless love when they are 5 but when they are 13 you will be glad you did it. Be Involved with their lives. We all lead extremely busy lives and it is sometimes easier to just turn on the TV or give them a screen. Sit down and read a book with the younger child (no TV on in the background) or just talk to them. Observe, listen, ask and parent. Cut the source. Switch the TV off at the wall and hide the remote controls, switch the Wi-Fi off when not in use so it is not so easy to connect. One parent found that having music playing can distract children from screens. Dig out an old CD player and your CDs, hours of entertainment. Audio books are also good. Value Family Meals. A recent survey noted 64% of young people say the TV is usually on during meals, and how many IPads/TVs are used as a distraction with some of our younger kids to get food down them! Switch it off and use books instead. For the younger kids, buy cheap little board books that you don’t mind getting covered

in food and keep them in a box by the dinner table. I know it is not the best habit, but if you need to distract use this instead of a screen. Value times at mealtimes and make an effort to all sit down together and talk about the day. A family’s richest conversations will take place during mealtimes and also car rides. Car Rides: Ditch the screens and only use them for long journeys. Let the children look out the window, there is an amazing colourful world out there. Talk to them about what they see, as they get older they will start to recognize routes. Switch off your Sat Nav and buy a map. On a recent trip to Devon our 6 and 8 year old were in charge of the road map and looking out for motorway junctions, they loved It . We also did a lot of eye spy, spotting colours of cars, ick ack ock etc. Don’t automatically give them a screen. Only use it when all other avenues have been exhausted. Kids need to learn patience and self regulation, essential for when they get older. Limiting screen time may initially be difficult, however you will definitely notice a difference in your kids behaviour as it becomes part of everyday life. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Believing in the potential of every child

It’s been another busy twelve months at Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Swansea, and the school will finish the academic year off in style with a Summer School week in August which includes workshops for 4 – 6 year olds and a full blown show in a week for 7 – 18 year olds. And Stagecoach Principal Luan Davies is looking forward to both events: “We have a very intense and exciting week of activities and it really helps give a fun and rewarding focus to the children during the long summer break!” said Luan. And the week long activity is not restricted to only existing students, which Luan believes provides a valuable experience for all involved: “We are very fortunate as we are joined during this week by students from all over the UK, Europe and even from Dubai and The Cayman Islands!” explained Luan.

For more information on Summer School and / or Autumn enrolment call Luan on 01792 204848 or register your interest on www.stagecoach.co.uk/swansea Page 33

What to do this Summer? I have to apologise to all around me for my incessant Winter whining.... I can be heard lamenting why I chose to stay in this country, how awful the rain/cold/sleet is, my regular threat of selling all I own and bundling the kids off to sunnier climates, my longing perusal of sites that sell tropical islands (really? Oh yes my friends, real deserted tropical islands, where I’d be likely to survive a week but boy I can dream... And some the bargain bin price for less than the equity in my house!). This is when the Mr. steps in with a well timed reality check and a glass of prosecco to remind me that my pain is short lived... As in Buddhism everything is temporary nothing is permanent... and that round the corner is the delicious promise of Summer. I thought I’d take the opportunity this month to tell you about our family favourite things to do in Summer.... None cost much money, all you need is a little bit of time and bags full of be what may attitude!

Camping

The Great British institution of family camping is hands down our family favourite thing to do once the weather starts to get better. We love the fact that we get to spend unlimited time all together. Admittedly the kids aren’t with us, as they’re off being feral with the group of new friends they have made before we’ve even managed to unpack the car, however we do all go to bed at the same time as each other and I sleep like a baby every time. A recent study undertaken in Plymouth has concluded that children who go camping are likely to do best in school - can totally see the theory behind this, my children spend their summer camping and go back to school in September a good foot taller, having had a number of amazing experiences, and met other children from all over the UK (admittedly they do need a good scrubbing in advance of returning to school, and they find it hard to adapt to wearing shoes again). All I can say is ensure that you have a good sleeping mat and earplugs, like I said earlier, like a baby every time.

of Swansea.... Within 5 minutes of getting in from a ridiculous day in work I can be sitting on the beach cooking hotdogs, sand between my toes, happy children frolicking in the water.... Australia eat your heart out! And it’s nothing like the toxic nightmare of our childhoods, the miles of golden sand are totally and utterly clean and usable.

Gloworm Hunting

They really really really do exist and are best found in June/July.... I always though they were a myth until we went one night down Gower..... Hands down little wonders of nature.

Dodge the jelly fish

Ok so this one is pretty gross but really appeals to small boys obsessed with all manner of disgusting things... Beaches are full of dead ones at this time of year, see who can spot the biggest one, do not touch them though as that is disrespectful to a once living thing!

After school swims

There really is life after school! And the nights are light so all is achievable... Get them in their suits and int the sea. This is the best thing to do is to wash away the grime and sweat of a hot sticky sunny day... Followed by a beach fire. Try and de-sand though before bed, otherwise you’ll find Caswell has nothing on the amount of sand you will find the next day!

Rockpooling

Speaks for itself.... Those amazing mini worlds of sea water provide hours of entertainment for old and young alike.

Strawberry picking

So we may owe the strawberry growers of Gower a massive apology for this one.... We do seem to eat our body weights in strawberries before we actually pay for a small punnet we have collected. Those little red delights though taste so amazing and nothing beats a family afternoon picking.

This under used gem is truly a jewel in the crown

And all I need to do now is remember to put on my sunscreen! Have a great Summer and remember to make the most of every precious moment you get!

The gift of Language

“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way” (Frank Smith, Psycholinguist) Children’s ability to acquire language is one of the most defining and awe-inspiring parts of a child’s development. Given that children are such gifted language learners, why settle for just one? Experts in language acquisition refer to a “Critical Period” to define the time when children can acquire a second language almost effortlessly, learning it in much the same way as their first. Beyond the obvious practical benefits of languages, research has shown that multilingualism has a powerful effect on cognitive development, boosting academic and problem solving abilities as well as fostering greater empathy and better communication skills. Marta, originally from Catalonia, runs a Spanish song group for little ones. We started ¡Que guay! in December 2014 with the aim of introducing Spanish to young children in a fun and friendly environment. We run the whole group in Spanish and work with songs, movement, games and stories based around different themes such as animals, food, colours, numbers and transport. We design many of our own materials to enable us to introduce and reinforce key language through play and sensory stimulus. It is very satisfying to see how quickly the children accept being in a Spanish speaking environment and become involved in the different activities. Above all, our focus is on the children having fun and taking part, blissfully unaware of any activity happening in their grey matter! ¡Que guay! runs on Saturday mornings at the Kinder Café. Holiday Clubs and Playschemes

Due to our ever changing work and family life commitments, placing your child in daycare is becoming one of the most popular forms of childcare. Settling a child into nursery can be hard enough in itself but how do you manage when your child reaches school age and doesn’t want to go? Holiday clubs and Playschemes are often a popular choice, particularly because they are fun, activity based childcare which operates during school holidays. As they are for children of school age you will probably find that many of your child’s friends are already attending there or you would have heard them talking about it in school if it’s something they have particularly enjoyed. Most Playschemes will have a plan of activities which will be taking place during the course of the week’s so if your child is a little apprehensive about going, where possible at least they can chose the day they would like to attend if it appeals to them.

the activities most valued by children. As well as offering the benefits of informal learning, these activities can expand the ‘comfort zone’ of children and their aspirations for their leisure time. Many playschemes offer an alternative environment for children to enjoy outdoors, where they can explore, climb, get wet, muddy and dirty, look for bugs, learn about and feel the natural elements. Allowing children and young people to get close to nature, acquire new skills, freely play in wild space, appreciate and understand the natural environment. All of these things are essential for children’s all round development and enhancing their natural curiosity to the world around them. Along with forming close connections and making new friends, it’s the reassurance that your child is having fun in a safe and stimulating environment which makes the decision to place your child in a holiday club, all the more worthwhile.

Tips for Children’s Haircuts By Jo from Joshuas, Mumbles

Cwm Ivy Bunkhouse

Organize your appointment time in the morning or after a nap. Most young children tend to be at their best when they are well rested and not too hungry. Avoid school holidays, Saturdays and busy times. A busy salon can result in a very stressful experience for them.

Fancy a stress free break?... look no further than Llanmadoc

Touch your child’s head often, a friendly ruffle of their hair, giving a brush or a gentle massage, all familiarises your child with their head being touched. This will reduce the stress to your child and prevent them from reaching up with their hands during the haircut. Make sure their hair is clean and with no knots if possible, as they will associate that pain with a haircut. Talk about what is going to happen a couple of days prior, in a fun excited way. Try to keep calm and happy and talk about positive things (“oh, he hates having a haircut!”). Bring along any toy, book, DVD or snack that they love, this is a big help. Also letting any older siblings have their haircuts first, they love to copy! Avoid using a haircut as a punishment for bad behaviour or in any other negative way. You should never be made to feel embarrassed by your child’s behaviour at a salon. A haircut is a very confronting experience for many children and most will grow out of it if treated with compassion by the stylist. If you fail to get the child’s haircut, it’s not the end of the world. Children’s moods change so quickly, try again a week later but don’t push the child too far, as it can build into an even bigger phobia. Praise, encourage and distract your child during the haircut. Good luck!

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend a night in the Cwm Ivy Bunkhouse, owned by the National Trust and situated among the trees and dunes of Whiteford Burrows National Nature Reserve in North Gower. I had walked past the bunkhouse on numerous occasions in the past on the way to the beach to see the old lighthouse (the only cast-iron offshore lighthouse in Britain) and had been curious about the interesting looking bungalow in the middle of nowhere! The bunkhouse has 3 really large bedrooms and sleeps up to 10 people, making it ideal for a bit of a family get together. The bunkhouse has underfloor heating, so even though the weather wasn’t cold we did appreciate the warmth during the evening, making the bedrooms feel very cosy. The bunkhouse is literally in the middle of the forest and a short walk from Whiteford Sands, so the kids had an absolute ball running around collecting firewood for the fire pit in the front garden. This is where we sat for most of the evening, enjoying the outdoors and roasting marshmallows. We BBQ’d whilst the kids were safe to run around pretty much everywhere and anywhere, making as much noise as they wanted. The seclusion was blissful! It was lovely not to feel the need to tell them to quieten down or slow down, they were free and they made the most of it! We were definitely at one with nature and slept very peacefully.... Meringues Meringues are perfect for the Summer. They are simple to make (not as scary as most of us think!), store well, and you can easily turn them into lovely summer desserts. This recipe is pretty straightforward but it helps if you have an electric whisk. Making time is quick, but they do however take two and a half hours on a low oven to bake.

Ingredients

Method

3 free range egg whites A good pinch of salt 200g caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Make sure you have a clean dry surface and wash your hands. Preheat the oven to 120 degrees centigrade. Separate the eggs, putting the whites into a large clean mixing bowl. Add the salt and the vanilla extract Whisk the eggs, using an electric hand whisk if

you have one. Whisk on the highest setting until the egg whites start to form soft peaks. Add a third of the sugar. Whisk in the sugar and keep whisking until the peaks become a little stiffer. Repeat. Finally add the remaining sugar and keep whisking until the peak are bright, smooth, stiff and glossy Cover a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper. With a large spoon, drop scoops of the mixture onto the baking paper. The mixture should make six decent sized meringues, or more if you like them smaller. Allow some space between them. Bake for two and a half hours. Try not to open the door as they bake, they won’t burn if your oven is even tempered and co-operative. Cool on the tray Store in an airtight container , they will keep for several days.

Variations:

Add ground hazelnuts to the mixture before baking Swirl through some food colouring for a bit of drama, again before baking. Make flatter round meringues and top with cream and summer fruits. Dollop chocolate spread on the bottom of two meringues, stick them together and drizzle with melted dark chocolate. Eat with ice cream Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with chopped apricots and toasted almonds Break up the meringues and mix with whipped cream and strawberries for Eton Mess The possibilities are endless‌.
