Although severely affected teeth can be covered by artificial crowns, such costly treatment may need repeating, as crowns can deteriorate or fracture. The most common cause of fluorosis is swallowed toothpaste containing a very high

level of fluoride which disrupts enamel formation. Most children’s toothpastes sold in Australia are made in Thailand, China and South Africa, and contain high levels of fluoride. This can cause mild to severe fluorosis, prompting dentists and Dental Associations to advise parents not to use toothpaste on baby teeth until a child is aged 18 months. Not using toothpaste during the critical period of emergence of baby teeth places an infant at risk of developing early dental decay. As bacteria from decayed primary teeth infect newly-emerged permanent teeth, a lifelong cycle of dental disease and repair treatment is set in motion.
