ur kids wear the same pair of shoes for roughly 7 hours a day, 200 days a year, so finding a comfortable pair of school shoes is something parents shouldn’t take lightly. In a recent study that tested the effect of shoe size on comfort and foot motion among 8-12 HE year-olds, Tresearchers found that shoes that were one size too small restricted the normal movement of the heel, arch and big toe during walking.

very day we communicate with other people to get our needs and wants met and to share our thoughts and feelings. As children grow, they learn to use a variety of ways to get their message across including words, facial expressions, gestures and body language. To begin with children may point to request something they want or push away a toy when they have had enough. They then start to use single words and then, as their vocabulary grows, combine words to together. Children need to use a range of different types of words including:

include:

• Requesting things we want (e.g. ‘I want crackers’). • Requesting information (e.g. ‘Where are you?) • Letting others know when they do not want something and to refuse (e.g. ‘no’) • Getting someone’s attention (e.g. ‘Mum!’) • Being social (e.g. ‘hi’ or ‘bye bye’) and expressing manners (e.g. ‘thank you’) • Making comments (e.g. ‘this is fun’) • Labelling objects (e.g. ‘It’s a bird) • Answering questions (e.g. what? where? who?) • Sharing experiences (e.g. ‘I’m learning to play basketball’) • Sharing ideas (e.g. ‘I think it’s great’) If your child isn’t pointing or using gestures, does not want to share attention with you, or has a limited range of communicative functions, a speech pathologist will be able to help. Speech pathologists can provide a comprehensive assessment of your child’s speech, language and interaction skills.

According to Dr John Arnold from the University of South Australia, “If a child’s shoes don’t fit well, they’re likely to experience discomfort and pain which can impact their participation and enjoyment of everyday activities such as play and sport. E

TH “Importantly, our research found that when children’s shoes were too small, they restricted foot and joint movements, which could create problems for children’s feet in the future.”

Co-researcher and podiatry expert Dr Helen Banwell says when it comes to the back-to-school rush, parents cannot afford to overlook the benefits of a well-fitted school shoe. “The start of a new school year can creep up quickly, and it’s easy to overlook or rush through the purchase of new shoes,” Dr Banwell says. “Our research shows that school-aged children can easily help identify a good shoe fit, by rating their level of comfort in the heel and toes.

Some kids mumble and grumble at the thought of going shopping for school items. But if you’re planning to get them a new pair of school shoes to kick off the year, make sure you bring your child along with you – even if it’s just for their thumb size.

• Naming words (e.g. ball, apple, car) • Action words (e.g. running, sleeping, want, see) • Describing words (e.g. big/little; wet/dry) • Location words (e.g. in, on, under, next to) • Social words (e.g. hi, bye bye, please, thank you) • Words that express belonging (e.g. mine, me, mummy’s) • Question words (e.g. What?, Where?) As a child’s vocabulary grows, it is important they develop words in all these groups so they can combine words together and make sentences. If they have many naming words but few of the other word types, this impacts on their ability to get their message across to all the people in their lives. As well as needing to develop a varied vocabulary, children need to communicate for a variety of reasons. These reasons
