XMAS HOLIDAY GUIDE

How are you celebrating Christmas differently this year?

H

People are looking to celebrate in new and different ways, with key themes coming through: • Celebrating the West Australian way • Keeping things simple • Focusing on personal meaning

small vocabulary of words, frustrated behaviour, and an unwillingness to learn were some of the signs Lesmurdie mum Tanya noticed early on with her son Oscar, indicating possible struggles with speech.

connoisseurs to cheese aficionados, we have you covered at homedelivery.brownesdairy.com.au To top it off, we have made a limited batch of Traditional Custard to go with your Christmas pudding. Available via the Milkos as well as independent retailers from Dec 7th, you’ll need to get your hands on it quickly as when it’s gone, it’s gone. However you plan to celebrate Christmas this year, from our Brownes Dairy family to yours, we hope it is meaningful and memorable.

To help keep your gift buying simple, the Brownes Dairy Milko has a gift solution for everyone. From something for your little Wiggles fans, to Yogo lovers and from coffee

Between 12 and 24 months, she became increasingly aware of the minimal sounds Oscar was using, his stumbling with words, and escalating behaviour due to his frustration at being unable to communicate his wants, needs and feelings. When Oscar turned two, Tanya decided to trust her intuition that something was not right. Numerous medical appointments eventually led Tanya and Oscar to take up private speech pathology, but it wasn’t until about a year later that Oscar’s speech flourished after discovering Telethon Speech & Hearing and their specialised speech and language program, Talkabout. “Oscar started speech therapy at three, but it wasn’t until entering the Talkabout program that his progress just grew exponentially,” said Tanya.

To celebrate living in the best spot in the world, we’ve decided to inject a distinctly West Aussie feel into our Santa’s Favourite Milk Christmas labels this year! After all, there’s no such thing as a white Christmas here.

“Talkabout provided a safe space for Oscar to learn with other children with similar abilities, and that extra one-on-one time with teachers meant he felt more comfortable to have a go and felt safe to make mistakes.”

Oscar’s growing confidence

By Nicole Ohm (mum & manager at Brownes Dairy) ere at Brownes Dairy HQ we recently sat in on a piece of research that showed that after the year we’ve all had, this Christmas will be unlike any other.

trained in the Sounds~Write program, an evidence-based phonics program supported by the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation. Talkabout provides opportunities for families to receive NDIS support, join social events and connect with other parents. “Talkabout is so much more than just speech therapy which is a great advantage – having other developmental supports including occupational therapy, audiology, a family liaison and psychology services all in one location meant it was just the whole package to us,” said Tanya. “Oscar just loves so many aspects including gym time, the library and his friends. The program has really helped him develop into a confident, outgoing, and self-assured child.” After being part of the program for almost two years, Tanya is thankful to have followed her intuition and recommends parents facing a similar situation do the same. “My advice to parents is to definitely trust your gut and come to Telethon Speech & Hearing if you have any worries about your child’s speech,” she said. “Seeing how far Oscar’s communication skills, behaviour and confidence has grown since enrolling , I have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful program.” For more information about the Talkabout program, including eligibility and enrolments, call 9387 9888 or visit www.tsh.org.au

Keep calm & build a cave! he school holidays can be a challenging time for everyone in the family. While older students may understand how great it is to have a break from school, younger children may feel anxious and fearful about changes to their usual routine.

T

It is normal for children to display difficult behaviours from time to time as part of their development. It is also just as normal for parents to feel frustrated and challenged by their child’s problematic behaviours! For children with speech and language delays, their behaviour can be influenced by frustration at their limited ability to communicate verbally. They may also display an overly sensitive response to external stressors or confusion over what is expected from them.

Get the whole family sleeping, feeling and breathing well.

Modelling for your child how to take a calming time-out when situations become overwhelming is a great way for children to learn self-calming tools. Many dads have a “man-cave” in their basement or garage that have calm-down tools such as music, big screen TVs, or hobby equipment, so why not create a quiet area in your own home to help your child calm down and regroup?

Known as halotherapy, salt therapy usually involves spending time in a spa-like ‘salt room’ while breathing in tiny negatively ionised salt particles. ‘It’s an all-natural, drug-free solution that clears mucus, kills bacteria and viruses and reduces inflammation throughout the whole respiratory system,’ said owner of The Salt Room in Perth, Kat Kupsch. ‘Think of all the a’s – salt has natural antihistamine, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties which detoxify the body, strengthen the immune system and relieve symptoms for a range of conditions.’ ‘It can also help people suffering from skin issues such as psoriasis, acne, eczema and dry and flaky skin.’

Kat says salt therapy can be traced back as far as Ancient Greece when Hippocrates recommended visits to salt caves as an effective treatment for respiratory issues. ‘Then in 1843, a Polish doctor, Felix Boczowski, noticed workers from a salt mine had fewer respiratory problems than other mineworkers,’ she said. His findings led to the first salt therapy clinic near Krakow, a health spa inside the Wieliczka Salt Mine which still operates today and is included on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List – I’ve been lucky enough to visit and it is amazing.’ While modern day salt rooms are set up to mimic salt caves, modern day science has only relatively recently started studying salt therapy’s potential benefits. Kat says she sees on a daily basis how salt therapy helps optimise wellbeing in her clients.

there’s such a feeling of calm and wellness that comes afterwards – I see it in nearly everyone we treat from the very young to the very old,’ she said. ‘And as for myself I have not been sick a day since I started the Salt Room.’

Managing Christmas as a separated family

otal Chess is a Perth-based chess coaching company with a passion for helping children develop their problemsolving abilities, confidence, and critical thinking skills through the amazing game of Chess.

T

Total Chess has an approach for all learning styles, whether in an afterschool club where students engage in explicit teaching and friendly competition against their peers, small group teaching or private tuition for a more focused approach. Students also enjoy participating in weekend competitions where they can put their skills to the test, experience the competitive environment of a rigorous chess tournament

C

Other tips for a merry Christmas include:

hristmas can be difficult for separated families, especially with conflict between Mum and Dad. It can however still be a time for family celebration and joy. The Family Law Act sets out some guidelines to consider:

in a safe, inclusive and beginner friendly space.

Set a good example ask the other parent if they have plans to take the children away over the holidays, what their work commitments are, and work around calendars.

Children come first “ensuring that children have the benefit of both of their parents having a meaningful involvement in their lives”. Children have a right to enjoy Christmas with both of their parents and extended families and parents are responsible for this.

Total Chess is accepting new enrolments in all clubs in the Perth Metro area for Term 1, 2021. If you want your child to have a head start and develop 21st century skills, visit totalchess.com.au to find out more or to enrol in classes for next term.

Consider going halves with the other parent in a gift for the children. Be the bigger person if you’re doing your best to work with the other parent and they are not, just keep trying your kids will appreciate it.

If you don’t have anything nice to say

Dance Venture gives me the wings to fly

Ask for support Christmas morning when your children are not at home can be emotional. Phone a friend to catch up and don’t sit home alone.

“protecting children from physical or psychological harm from being subjected to, or exposed to, abuse, neglect or family violence”. Keep Christmas conflict-free and make it a time of restoration for your family.

If all else fails and things go partridge-in-a-pear-tree-shaped, be kind to yourself and rest up while you can.

A failure to plan is a plan to fail ext year at Dance Venture is set to be wonderful, given the lessons learnt from 2020. Students have shown strong resilience and motivation throughout 2020 and have achieved greater focus and understanding in their dance. The school looks forward with great excitement to the year-end performances which will celebrate all that has been achieved.

Lessons learned from the 2020 school lockdown By Claire de Franck, Editor his year is best forgotten and we all know why! However there have been some positives and learnings in amongst the gloom, and none more so than when the school gates were closed and the dining room table became home to a science lab, library, art room and everything in between. Here are just a few of the lessons that were learned…and not just by the kids.

Spirit

Tell us about yourself? My name is Keren Benjamin, my husband and I have been volunteering with the Salvation Army for about 5 years. We do the “soup run”, which means we feed the homeless, once a month.

What do you do on Christmas Day? We do the soup run. This involves getting to the Salvation Army Headquarters about 6am and heating up soup and pies. We leave for our first stop at 7.30am, giving out sandwiches, pies, soup and coffee over 2 stops.

What does it mean to you? Being able to give back to the community and the satisfaction of helping people in need. The people we help are very grateful and polite.

Seeing how your child learns – how many of us know very little about what our child did at school on any given day? You ask but if you get anything more than ‘it was a good day’ it is a miracle! Home schooling allowed parents to see those subjects they were passionate about and then those that were more of a struggle, and this has brought greater understanding of them both in the

way they learn and as people.

Becoming aware of the phenomenal online resources out there – before lockdown did anyone ever really do a virtual tour of the Louvre or walk The Great Wall? Lockdown learning opened up parents eyes to so many wonderful and unique ways to introduce culture, travel and the arts to their kids. An extra bonus when international travel a non-starter.

Watching how resilient kids are – the first few days were hard but once we got into a rhythm with our timetable from school, it was amazing to see how motivated the kids were to get involved, wanting to contribute to what they wanted to learn that day for Science or what story they wanted to

write about for English.

Realising parents cannot do it all – doing two jobs at once is impossible unless you are a ventriloquist or a unicycling juggler! A different dynamic exists between a parent and their child, and that child and their teacher. Balancing working from home whilst keeping on top of schoolwork showed why for most children being in class is the best option, and why as parents we all breathed a sigh of relief when they returned!

6 Best Hidden Beaches in Perth By Claire de Franck, Editor urn off the laptop, step away from the desk, grab the bathers and hit one of Perth’s hidden beach spots. Summer is coming so whether you want to chill out or get active we have you covered (well not literally.. best not forget the sunscreen! )

A perfect spot for the whole family thanks to calm waters and gorgeous views. Ideal for snorkelling and a bit of fishing too.

BURNS BEACH

T

Plenty of quiet areas await you at this Fremantle beach, all you need to worry about is who to take.

BAILEY BEACH South of Mettam’s Pool in Trigg, this is a great place to relax or snorkel if the

weather is calm.

YANCHEP LAGOON

A great sheltered beach making it a top choice for swimming and a picnic. Set within Marmion Marine Park you might even spot dolphins and sea lions.

SOUTH BEACH A calm and shady spot with perfect grassy areas, children playgrounds and

more, it’s easy to see why this is a favourite amongst Fremantle locals.

MULLALOO BEACH Just a short drive from Hillarys Boat Harbour, this has great playgrounds as well as perfect parklands ideal for that sunset picnic.

Ho Ho Ho…NO did someone say Christmas Craft? Four ways to enjoy Christmas creativity hristmas is a busy time and can be tiring, so a great way to take quiet time out with the kids is to sit down and enjoy some arts and crafts, but nobody needs the extra mess right? Fear not, pop on the Mariah Carey, rustle up some treats and sit down to some mess-free fun with our top tips.

C

CRAFT KIT – doing craft doesn’t mean you need a state of the art kit! Pick out a few items that are fun and easy to store. The most basic kit includes: scissors, clear glue or sticky tape, coloured card or paper and a set of coloured pens or markers. KEEP IT SIMPLE – you don’t need loads

of glitter and ribbons, buy some coloured tape or stickers. They are easy to use, lowmess and help with fine motor skills too. FREE PLAY – If you do need to leave the kids to check on the mince pies, leave easy-to-use art materials on the table so that they can get on and have fun. Washable markers, paper plates, dot stickers and crayons are just some of the items you can use. JOIN IN – don’t forget whatever they are doing try to join in and get crafty yourself. They will love seeing you have a go and this will encourage them to unleash their creativity.

Back to School or Back to Anxiety By Claire de Franck, Editor hat does back to school mean? A lot of things! Mad panic to get the booklist order in; buy new uniform or at least find where you put it from last year; get new shoes and track down that old pencil case.

W

However often amongst the chaos the main thing gets overlooked – the fact that kids are returning to school after a long break. Now this throws up a lot of emotion, anxiety and stress, are they going to be in a new class, is it a new school, are they carrying angst from the previous year or maybe even its their first ever day at school! There can be a lot that’s overwhelming and stressful so how can we as parents manage this?

• Give them a good morning routine to help start the day. • Talk about school, this can be hard when they are tired or upset but ask open ended questions or ask them what was the best thing that happened.

• Once starting at a new school meet with their teacher after a few weeks to see how they are going. • Find out about extra-curricular activities that your child might like to join in with • As a parent find out what activities you can get involved with.

• Discuss a move to a new school in advance make them feel part of the process.

Children are very adaptable sometimes its us as parents who hold all the worry however its important to be aware of their feelings and keep talking, reassuring and sharing positivity.

• Be enthusiastic whether it’s a new school term or a new school.

Head to raisingchildren.net.au for more advice

• If they have moved schools help them keep in touch with old friends.

Lunchbox Ideas A nyone else struggle with lunchboxes that look luscious? Maybe they are more beige than bento! As parents too, here are a couple of our favourites that will start the new school term off perfectly.
