Migraines traced back to the brain
M
igraines affect about two million Australians, with more women affected than men. Most often migraines affect people in their twenties and thirties, although children and older adults can suffer as well.
‘decreased pre-activation’) and, secondly, that they appear to be more sensitive to repetitive stimuli (known as ‘reduced habituation’).
Alarmingly, studies show that up to 50% of people that suffer from migraines have not actually been diagnosed, which means that a lot of people are probably not getting the best treatment. Many people with migraines know that things like stress, lack of sleep, neck tension and certain foods can trigger an attack. However, research over the past decade has confirmed that in many cases the root of the problem comes from changes in normal brain function. In other words, the underlying cause of migraines can often be found in the brain. Sophisticated brain imaging (such as QEEG brain scans) of people who suffer from migraines has revealed abnormalities in the function of some parts of the brain. This research has come up with important findings – firstly, that people who suffer from migraines have brains that appear to be working ‘slower’ on one side (known as
Traditionally, treatment for migraines has been directed towards using medication to minimise the severity and frequency of headaches and prevent attacks. Many people also look to identify and minimise any ‘triggers’, and this approach can be helpful for some. Everybody’s brain is different and there is no single treatment for migraines that works for everyone. The Perth Brain Centre offers drug-free treatments that involve improving normal brain function using therapies such as Neurofeedback (brain-wave training) and Trans-Cranial Direct Current Stimulation (gentle brain stimulation), as well as improving resilience to stress using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Biofeedback. They also provide evidence-based dietary and lifestyle advice specific to managing migraines. For further information about how brainbased drug-free therapies can help treat migraines, please telephone The Perth Brain Centre on 6500 3277 or visit perthbraincentre.com.au

Plastic Free July
F
or the month of July people all around the state, and even the world, are drawing attention to our rampant use of disposable plastic. In 2016, over one million people worldwide registered to take part in the Plastic Free July challenge, to reduce the amount of plastic they used. Plastic Free July is again sending out the challenge to us all to reduce or eliminate single-use plastic from our life – like plastic bags, cling wrap, straws and water bottles – for a day, a week or the whole month. Mindarie Regional Council Waste Education Officer, Peg Davies, said, ‘It is only when we try not to use plastic that we get an idea of how much it is part of our lives. Plastic is used everywhere.’
to break down makes it a huge problem for littering and marine pollution. Also, the energy and resources going into materials we use and then discard is irresponsible’, Peg said. Very little of this type of plastic is recycled and, unfortunately, much of it is disposed of poorly. It is estimated that, worldwide, eight million tonnes of plastic, the equivalent of one garbage truck load per minute, is dumped into our oceans. There are chemicals in some plastics that have been associated with harmful health effects to humans, and the damage ingested plastics are making on our marine birds and other animals is now being felt worldwide.
Peg suggested to begin by eliminating use of the big four – plastic bags, coffee cup lids, straws and water bottles. Doing so makes for a thought provoking conversation to have at home or at work.
To quote from the Bag It movie, ‘Think about it. Why would you make something that you’re going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever, and you’re just going to throw it away. What’s up with that?’
‘Although single use plastic does not form a significant quantity of the waste stream due to its light weight, its inability

Michael began photographing the dawn in August 2011 and he has since captured over 2000 Perth sunrises. ‘It’s a routine I’ve come to really enjoy’, Michael said. ‘The early morning soon became my favourite part of the day. Managing children’s behaviour in a positive way. With Dolly Bhargava
Who’s the boss?
I
magine your child is in their bedroom playing with their iPad. You knock on the door and walk in. You tell the child that they need to stop playing and come downstairs for dinner. At first they ignore you, so you repeat your instruction. The child responds by saying, ‘Can’t you see I am playing?’ You repeat yourself for the third time but this time they scream, ‘Go away! I don’t want my dinner!’ As you then try to argue, they make sure that they keep arguing with you until you finally give in. ‘Well, if you want dinner later on, you won’t be getting any’, you say, to which the respond ‘I don’t care!’ Of course, an hour later they come downstairs and ask for dinner. You remind them of what you said, which sparks more arguing.

When a child with ODD is engaging in an activity that they find highly interesting, 100% of their attention is on that activity. You may be calling their name downstairs, or as you walk up the stairs, but they don’t hear you. So when you knock on the door it gives them a fright that angers them and
You’re an adult, and therefore an authority figure – and children with ODD find it difficult to take orders from authority figures. So when you argue with them, they need to make sure that they outwit, outlast or outplay you. They have to win this argument at all costs. Children with ODD always have to have the final word. Hence the ‘I don’t care! at the end of this hypothetical argument. An hour later, when they are in a happier mood, they’ll feel ready for dinner. They expect that you’ll be over the argument upstairs and give them dinner. And bringing up what was said upstairs will only continue the arguing. When a child’s belief is ‘I am the boss of me and you aren’t the boss of me’, you can’t tell them what to do. And it doesn’t help that the child believes they are always right, are in control and have the power to do whatever they want they do. So as you can see, there is always an underlying reason for your child’s behaviour. It’s not an excuse, but it means they need your help, support, and guidance to help them learn how to manage their emotions and behaviours.

Time spent learning is probably the biggest factor that will lift or drop a child’s performance. Malcolm Gladwell talks about the ‘10,000 hour rule’ in his book The Outliers, whereby a person needs to spend 10,000 hours at an activity to master it. Spending more time on things like school, homework and tutoring will make a significant difference. for all students up to year 10.

Ask
• The arrival of a new sibling. In this case, try freeing up the cot a few months before your due date to give your child time to settle into their big bed before they see the new baby taking over the cot. If your cot doubles as a toddler bed and you are still able to use it, leave it in the same spot. If you’re getting a single bed, put it in the same place where the cot was. A big room change can be overwhelming.
We'd like to introduce Filomena. She's our friend, a real person with real problems, and a mother to 5 fantastic children ranging in ages from 3 to 18.
Q
Some children adjust easily, while others have a hard time with the change. Firstborns can have a harder time than a second-born because younger siblings want to be just like their older brother or sister. Filomena is here to offer practical parenting tips for your baby or toddler.
Please spread the word by using #askfilomena and #kidsinperth.
Now that your child is free to wonder as they please, or at least they think they can, routine is more important than ever. Stick to the normal bedtime routine and walk away. Fingers crossed they won't get out but, if this happens, help them straight back to bed and say, ‘It's time to go to bed. See you in the morning’. Be prepared to repeat this process several times in one night over a few nights (and same with the afternoon nap) until your child stays in their bed and settles.
When and how should my child change from a cot to a bed? James - Mount Hawthorn
There is no set time to get rid of your child’s cot and put them into a bed – although most children make the move sometime between 18 months and three and half years old. If your child sleeps well in their cot, don't rush the change. Switching to a bed gives a child freedom, which inevitably leads to bedtime battles and early morning wandering. Besides outgrowing the cot, the most common reasons for the switch are: • Your child starts climbing out of their cot. This sort of daredevil behaviour can force you to have to make the move earlier than expected. • Because you are toilet training your child – or they are already toilet trained and need to be able to get to the toilet more easily.
WIN WIN WIN
Make the switch as enjoyable as possible. Talk to your child about this exciting new change a week in advance so it doesn’t come as a big shock. Get them to help set up their bed, use their cot blankets or pick out an exciting new bed cover together. Help arrange their favourite cuddly toys on the new bed. Read bedtime books on the bed together.
There may be a few rocky nights but, with patience, persistence, love and reassurance, it will soon be over. Tell them in the morning that you are super proud and that they are doing such a great job. Remember, there is light at the end of the tunnel. You got this!
