Kids on the Coast Magazine - Sunshine Coast | Summer 2024 Edition

Page 1

Here it is—summer—the big one—the season when everything happens! The school year ends, Christmas concerts and festivities fill our calendars, we juggle activities and work during the long school holidays, try to squeeze in some family time (funny, right?!), and kick off another school year—all within 12 weeks.

It’s a whirlwind of activity, and it can be exhausting. Financial pressures and ongoing kid worries intensify amidst all this change. I’m exhausted just writing about it!

And while

more amazing. The little humans who never slept at night and needed me for everything are now blossoming into incredible people. They’re funny, thoughtful, and full of life.

And while Christmas may not be quite as magical as it once was, there’s no visiting Santa or kids excitedly jumping on the bed at 4 am, the joy of watching my kids grow and thrive is far greater. It’s a reminder that parenting isn’t just about the holidays or the school year. It’s about the little moments, the laughter, the tears, and the unconditional love.

may not be quite as magical as it once was, the joy of watching my kids grow and thrive is far greater.

For me, this is traditionally the time when parenting burnout really kicks in. I swear I’ll lighten the load each year and be more organised, but it always seems to pile up.

But as the kids get older, things do get a little easier. Christmas becomes less wondrous, but school holidays are less fraught, and I’m less of a frazzled mess. And each year, as they grow older, they become

So, to all the parents out there feeling the strain of the busy season, know that you’re not alone. Take a deep breath, and remember you’re doing an incredible job. And as your kids get older, you’ll look back on these hectic times with a smile, knowing it was all worth it.

With love,

Flinders Anglican College has been awarded The Educator’s 5-Star Sustainable Programs Award 2024 for being “a shining example of effective sustainability education in action”.

Flinders is one of just six schools in Queensland and 25 schools across Australia to be awarded a 5-Star Sustainable Program and recognised as “forward-thinking and innovative schools, leading a movement to conserve natural resources and create a greener future”.

Principal Michelle Carroll said it was wonderful that the College was recognised for its leadership in sustainability and environmental education programs.

Flinders won the award for its commitment to sustainability across the campus, including the regeneration of its halfhectare Flinders Farm, which includes a 900m2 citrus orchard, 500m2 of vegetable beds, 14 bee hives, chickens, a compost-making facility and a

Looking for a little magic for your little one?
Much-loved Sunshine Coast production company Little Seed Theatre Company brings fairytale enchantment to Noosa Botanic Gardens this summer.

From its humble beginnings as a childhood dream, Little Seed Theatre Company has blossomed into a vibrant hub of creativity on the Sunshine Coast. Renowned for its annual summer performances in the atmospheric amphitheatre at Noosa Botanic Gardens, this beloved youth theatre has been instrumental in shaping the lives of countless young people in the region.

More than providing a launchpad for aspiring performers, Little Seed offers a nurturing environment where children can discover their passions, build self-confidence, and find a sense of belonging. Whether they dream of standing in the spotlight or simply seek a supportive community, Little Seed provides a place where creativity can flourish and dreams can bloom.

“It’s been an incredible journey so far,” says Jo Wallace, founder of Little Seed Theatre Company. “Living in a seaside town and making so much theatre with such wonderful young people is so special.”

Jo grew up loving stories and theatre. From her childhood, Jo remembers turning to theatre as a place to connect and find a community. “It’s a significant part of why I started Little Seed—to provide a haven for those wonderfully creative souls who don’t always fit the mould. The creative spirit often dances to its own tune and doesn’t always fit into the mainstream, so creating a space for them is a massive part of what we’re about. It’s about offering a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment,” says Jo.

“We strive hard to make everyone feel included as much as possible—working with individuals with physical disabilities and

ensuring that LGBTQ kids have a supportive space too.”

THE BENEFITS OF PERFORMING ARTS

The performing arts offer a multitude of benefits for children. From boosting confidence to developing essential communication skills, the stage provides a unique platform for personal growth.

“It’s like a sport for people who don’t want to do sport because it teaches a lot about teamwork and collaboration,” says Jo. “It also nurtures creativity, develops empathy, and emotional intelligence.”

The challenges posed by full-length performances push students to their limits, fostering resilience and determination. Beyond the artistic achievements, the social aspect of the performing arts is equally valuable, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging.

“Plus, it’s such an ephemeral art form; it teaches kids to be fully invested in the moment. We give everything, then it goes on stage, and then it’s gone. We’ve got it for just that moment, and then it’s no more. And that’s okay,” says Jo.

CINDERELLA IN THE GARDENS

This summer, Little Seed Theatre Co. presents Cinderella in the Botanic Gardens.

“We’ve done eight full-length Shakespeare plays in the gardens. This will be our third family show for the gardens, the previous ones being Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland,” says Jo.

Cinderella in the Gardens is poised to be another captivating, family-friendly production from Little Seed Theatre Company.

COVER FEATURE

It promises to delight children and adults alike with its blend of magic and humour.

“It’s a pantomime, which means it has a little comedy and silliness,” says Jo. “It’ll be really entertaining. And pantomime suits big spaces, so I feel like the amphitheatre is the perfect place for a summer pantomime.”

LITTLE SEED ON THE ROAD

On top of the classes and the eight productions a year, touring the shows is another branch of the Little Seed tree that Jo is excited to grow.

“We toured Alice in Wonderland to Rainbow Beach, which was hugely popular, so we will hopefully take another show there soon. And we’ve just finished touring Mary Poppins in Caloundra, which was incredible,” says Jo.

“This year has just exceeded our expectations, and I’d love to see touring as an established part of our yearly calendar.”

“We run classes from Monday to Thursday in acting, music, theatre, film, and dance across four age groups.”

WEEKLY CLASSES AT LITTLE SEED

Of course, these productions don’t just magically happen. Still, at the core of Little Seed Theatre Company are the weekly classes that they hold across the Noosa Shire.

“We run classes from Monday to Thursday in acting, music, theatre, film, and dance across four age groups: Minis (Prep - Year 2), Juniors (Years 4 - 6), Intermediate (Years 79), Seniors (Years 10 - 12). So, there are many opportunities for young people to find the right class that fits them. We also run holiday programs every school holiday, and private coaching is available for any student who wishes to excel as a performer. We just started Acting in Film this year, and that’s been fun. There’s a big difference between acting for screen and acting for stage, so we’re really enjoying exploring that.

“I am also proud to have established a strong actor training program that provides opportunities for young performers to explore the work of William Shakespeare from Grade 3 through Grade 12,” Jo adds.

This training culminates in Grade 10-12 students presenting a full-length Shakespeare production at the Noosa Botanical Gardens’ amphitheatre.

“Seeing Little Seed nurturing talented actors and adding vibrant colours to our community’s cultural fabric is wonderful!”

SUMMER

S L I D

1 1 1

Easy ways to keep your child’s literacy firing during the summer break.

The long summer break is upon us once more. It’s time for the kids to kick back, play outside, indulge in some extra screen time and have zero worries for six weeks. However, how much downtime is too much? And how does that impact a child’s literacy?

Known as the ‘summer slide,’ it’s common for kids to experience some regression

in academic ability during the summer months. This can hinder their progress when they return to the classroom, so it’s important to keep their little brains active and learning. Thankfully, there are plenty of super-easy and totally free things we can do to use some of that downtime for good. They also double up as sanity savers for parents. #win-win

PLAY LITERACY GAMES IN THE CAR

Reading signs whilst in the car is a great way to get kids’ brains firing. Have them read words they spot, look for specific

HELP WITH SHOPPING

Making lists, helping at the supermarket, and writing Christmas cards are all things that help enormously with their literacy. It can also take the load off a frazzled parent.

VISIT THE LIBRARY

Stock up on great summer reads, including magazines, graphic novels and plenty of books at the local library. Then, when the ‘I’m bored’ complaints come drifting through, you also have a pile of interesting reads to direct them.

JOIN THE LIBRARY EXPLORERS CLUB

Grab your boarding pass and get ready for a holiday full of adventures! Complete the weekly challenges to go into the draw to win $100 book vouchers. Visit library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ whats-on/library-explorers-club for more information.

ORDER FOOD

Eating out or grabbing a takeaway? Have the kids read the menu and order their own food. It’s a great confidence builder and another sneak way to get them reading.

HAVE A FAMILY GAME NIGHT

letters or numbers, or make up sentences from license plates. All these activities also double as a delay in backseat squabbles and that inevitable question: ‘Are we there yet?’

If you are going somewhere new, get the kids to plot out the journey. They can look for places for a picnic, petrol stops, and places of interest.

TRY A NEW RECIPE

Why not have them choose a recipe from a book and help to cook? They can read the recipe out and measure ingredients as you cook together. Dinner, bonding and literacy—tick!

Playing games together is a great wat to keep your child’s literacy up and have family time. When you start, ‘forget’ how to play, so the kids must pull out the instructions and read them aloud. If games aren’t your thing, have a story night!

DOWNLOAD EBOOKS AND EAUDIOBOOKS

If you are going on a road trip, download an eAudio book to listen to together in the car, and rather than taking a pile of books, pack light and download eBooks to your device. eBooks and eAudiobooks are available for free from the library.

A luxury getaway

WITHOUT THE PRICE

Luxury and affordability? Who says you can’t have it all on your next holiday? And it’s right on your doorstep.

Let’s be real: family holidays have taken a backseat in recent years. Between the cost-of-living crisis and the general chaos of life, it’s easy to feel like a getaway is just a distant dream. But what if we told you there’s a way to escape the every day and experience a touch of luxury without breaking the bank?

A trip to the brand-new luxury cabins at Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is what every family needs right now. These aren’t your average holiday park cabins. We’re talking airconditioned bliss, sumptuous beds, marble bathrooms with rain showers and a divine range of shampoo and soaps. You’ll feel like you’re living in the lap of luxury.

With fully-equipped kitchens, including a dishwasher and a massive fridge with a chilled water dispenser, these cabins offer everything you need for a comfortable and indulgent stay for the whole family.

“These are a bit more upmarket from our previous cabins, with more modern decor, brass fittings in the kitchen and bathroom areas and a little more luxury,” says Candy Workman, Sales and Business Development Manager at Gold Coast Holiday Park.

What’s wonderful is that you can enjoy the luxury of a hotel, and it comes with the facilities and activities that families want from a getaway. An epic waterpark, giant jumping pillow, pedal cars, movie nights, sports facilities and the tastiest dining, which is also surprisingly affordable, is the best of both worlds and is right here in Southeast Queensland.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS TO SUIT EVERYONE

If the luxury cabins aren’t your thing, Big4

Gold Coast has plenty of accommodation options to suit every budget and taste. From non-powered camping sites to safari tents with an outdoor bath, they have catered for everyone.

Camping sites: Choose from ensuite, powered or non-powered sites. The nonpowered sites are well-sized grass sites alongside the tranquil Saltwater Creek, offering the best rustic camping experience, whilst the ensuite sites provide the best of the park with the privacy and comfort of your own bathroom.

Motel rooms: The family motel rooms offer all the convenience and comfort of a motel in the heart of the park. They can sleep up to four people.

Safari tents: Fitting up to six people, each tent has a four-poster bed, a bunk bed, two single beds in a nook, a kitchenette, a bathroom and a living/dining space. There is also a gorgeous veranda with a sunken lounge and a clawfoot bathtub. Both tents overlook Saltwater Creek.

Cabins: There are a range of cabins, from cosy 3-star comfort to luxury retreats. All cabins are comfortable and spacious, with everything you need, including a full kitchen (excluding an oven) and a washing machine in the three-bedroom cabins. The three-bedroom cabins fit up to 10 people, and the family cabins fit up to six.

The park has a fully decked-out camp kitchen for all guests, with BBQ space, fridge and freezer storage, hotplates, ovens, microwaves, fridges, freezers and toasters.

FAMILY FEASTS

One of the biggest perks of a family holiday at

Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is the fantastic on-site café. Whether you’re craving a hearty breakfast, a quick lunch, or a delicious dinner, you’ll find something to satisfy your taste buds. The café has a dog-friendly area, so your furry friends can join you for a meal. The food is not only delicious but also incredibly affordable, making it easy to treat yourself and your loved ones without breaking the bank. So put your feet up and relax… your taste buds will thank you!

To make the visit as easy as possible for families, Big4 Gold Coast has also introduced QR codes in all the cabanas around the pool and the waterpark, on the tables in Nibbles Café and Nibbles Terrace, as well as on the bar-top seating in the Terrace, so guests can scan, order and pay for their food and have it delivered straight to them.

THINGS TO DO

Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park isn’t just about luxurious cabins; it’s a playground for the whole family! There’s something for everyone, from epic water adventures to cosy movie nights.

With over 300 metres of slides BIG4 Gold Coast Water Park is the perfect place for kids of all ages to play for hours. Parents can look on from the comfort of one of the poolside cabanas or get in and try out the super-slides and interactive play features, including:

• A multi-lane body slide

• 4 x aqua tube slides

• 1 x compact slide

• The tipping bucket of all tipping buckets

• A combined total of 317m of water slides!

The heated pool and spa are the perfect place to unwind if you feel like something more relaxed. While the new eco-friendly

playground is hugely popular with the little ones. Made from recycled materials, such as ocean waste, plastics and textiles, it is designed to motivate children to play, learn how to move, improve balance, and socialise with other kids.

“The new playground is such a great place where the kids can go and have fun,” says Candy. “There are several seating areas, so parents can relax and enjoy a coffee. Plus, it’s next to the basketball courts where older kids can play games. The dog park is also right there, so the dogs can have a runaround. So the whole family can go down the back of the park and burn off some steam.”

And let’s not forget the Giant Jumping Pillow, offering hours of bouncing fun for kids of all ages! There’s also a kids’ activity centre with arts and crafts, hair braiding, and special guests to entertain the little ones. The park regularly organises themed events and activities for families and children, such as Halloween, Easter, Christmas, and Movie Nights under the stars.

For those who love the great outdoors, Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is a nature lover’s paradise. With 20 acres of land, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy a bushwalk and spot local wildlife like koalas and kangaroos. The park also has several pristine fishing spots for those who like to fish

IT’S TRULY ACCESSIBLE

Ensuring the park is accessible to all is a core focus at BIG4 Gold Coast. Therefore, this inclusive holiday park offers plenty of accessible accommodation and facilities, including a three-bedroom accessible deluxe cabin in the Oasis area.

For accommodation, the accessible motel rooms offer the convenience and comfort of motel accommodation in the heart of the park. The accessible family deluxe cabin is the perfect choice for a more extended stay with all the comforts of home. The park also has an accessible two-bedroom terrace close to the waterpark.

REACH FOR THE

Kindergarten is a pivotal year, shaping young minds and preparing them for future success. Experienced kindergarten teacher Lisa Gravestein from City Stars shares insights on how to make this transition smooth and enjoyable, ensuring a strong foundation for primary school.

The kindergarten year marks a significant beginning in a child's educational journey. It is a time when young learners cultivate essential skills, foster self-confidence, and forge meaningful relationships, all of

which lay a strong foundation for future success in primary school.

After many years of guiding little learners through their kindergarten year, Lisa Gravestein, kindergarten teacher from City Stars Kindergarten, knows too well the

PREPARING FOR THE FIRST DAY OF KINDY

Here are some tips on how to help your child feel comfortable and confident starting kindergarten

• Help your child feel comfortable about starting Kindy by talking positively about Kindy in everyday conversations.

• Get to know the kindergarten community by attending open days, transition sessions, and social events to familiarise your child with the environment and teachers.

• Practice self-care activities such as getting dressed, opening a lunchbox, and tidying up after play.

• Encourage your child to interact with others, share and take turns.

• Practise easy ways of asking for help, such as ‘I don’t know where to put my bag’ or, ‘Can you please help me with…’

many tiny steps that go into a successful kindy year and how each can impact the start of Prep.

“Children arrive in Kindy quite timid and shy, and you just see them quickly become so independent as they grow through our kindy year,” says Lisa.

“From the start, you ensure they feel safe and have that freedom to explore and run around. And by the time they leave, they are confident, resilient, empathetic, and nice human beings, confident to tackle whatever happens,” Lisa adds.

PREP TRANSITION AND SCHOOL READINESS

Rated as ‘Exceeding’ in the National Quality Standard, the City Stars kindergarten year is designed to seamlessly prepare students for the big learning adventures ahead.

“City Stars at Caloundra City Private School is a five-day per week program, and it's unique because it's part of Caloundra City Private School. We're on campus and very involved with the school and its everyday activities. However, we are separate and don't run to bell times because we have a play-based program,” says Lisa.

This play-based curriculum is designed to foster creativity, curiosity, and life skills. The program emphasises individual care, quality education, and a strong partnership with families. Children learn through engaging activities and meaningful experiences, building a solid foundation for future learning.

“We take a genuinely holistic approach when we look at kindergarten, so we like to focus on the children’s physical development, social development, and overall wellbeing,” says Lisa.

The popular kindergarten has several integrated programs to enhance that.

“Our Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) helps the children develop their fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and strength in the morning. Socially and emotionally, we have a great program that explicitly teaches the children how to be resilient through stories, conversations and games,” adds Lisa.

“And we include a fabulous learning rotation focused on school readiness. It’s a little bit more intentionally taught; they’re the sort of activities that we set in a playbased way that helps them get those skills, such as using playdough to model letters and

numbers,” says Lisa.

Being situated in Pelican Waters on Caloundra City Private School grounds offers children the unique ability to access school facilities to experience:

• bushwalks in the beautiful surrounding Pelican Waters Reserve;

• borrowing books from the school library;

• permaculture education utilising the school permaculture garden;

• sport and Physical Education lessons in the school hall;

• a smooth transition from Kindy to Prep,

visiting the school grounds and utilising its facilities.

“I think that's what really helps that transition to Prep—everything's familiar, so it takes away that anxiety of not knowing what they're doing. Children are fully prepared—they visit the library, go to assemblies, and already feel connected to the school,” says Lisa.

BUT MOST OF ALL, IT’S GOT TO BE FUN!

“We're smiling all day!” Lisa says. “The minute you step through the doors, the children are so curious and joyful!”

Lisa’s ultimate aim is for kindy students to be confident, capable and happy when they leave kindy.

“I see students from previous years walk past, and they always happily wave and say hello. I have high expectations and believe four-year olds are incredibly capable. When you nurture their hearts and ensure they feel safe and heard, they won’t stress about the little things and will flourish,” says Lisa.

SUN-SAFE UPF LEVELS

degrees. However, noting point 1 above, swap the muslin for a breathable UPF 50 cover. Directional shading is another safe method. Instead of fully covering the pram, use a sun-safe cloth to block the sun from the direction it’s hitting, leaving the other side open for airflow.

• UPF 15: Minimum protection93.3% UV rays blocked

• UPF 30: Good protection96.7% UV rays blocked

7 ways to keep your baby sun-safe this summer

We’re in for a scorching summer on the coast and experts recommend babies under 12 months avoid direct sunlight. While that sounds insurmountable, here’s how to keep your baby sun-safe without having to stay indoors.

AVOID MUSLIN SWADDLES

1

While handy and found in most nappy bags, muslin swaddles aren’t actually sun-safe. Sure, they create shade under a pram and can cover exposed skin, but the fabric lets through too many UV rays and doesn’t meet the minimum or recommended Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) ratings to be considered sun-protective.

USE SUN-SAFE COVERS

2

For the best possible sun protection, look for products with a certified UPF 50/50+ rating. Lightweight UV protective blankets are multi-use and can be used to shade babies in prams, baby carriers, and cars. They can even be hung up to create a shady spot for park tummy time sessions. Those with in-built magnets, like Bebe Trek’s, are even more versatile and mean no more struggling with pram clips or awkward knots.

CHOOSE UV PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

3

Consider clothing with UPF ratings for outdoor adventures. Lightweight summer clothing made from muslin or light-coloured cotton is unlikely to meet minimum sun-safe UPF levels. While most UPF 50 clothing on the market is swimwear, there are some day wear options, including Bebe Trek’s UV-protective sunsuits.

4

USE EVAPORATIVE COOLING AND DIRECTIONAL SHADING TECHNIQUES

Fully covering a pram, even with a lightweight cloth, can increase the internal pram temperature. On a hot day, this is dangerous for babies. However, there are safe ways to create extra shade.

A recent University of Sydney study found draping a damp muslin cloth over a pram combined with a clip-on fan, creates an evaporative cooling effect that reduces the internal pram temperature by around 4

5 USE SUNSCREEN AND HAT

For babies over six months, slop on sunscreen and re-apply regularly (sunscreen isn’t recommended for babies under six months due to their sensitive skin). Slap on a hat too—the earlier you start, the more used they’ll get to hats, and they’ll be less likely to pull them off when they’re older. Look for a wide-brim or legionnaire style with a UPF 50 rating.

STAY IN THE SHADE

6

Where possible, stick to the shade of trees or awnings or create your own shade. Be wary of reflective surfaces (sand, water and concrete), as UV rays can bounce back onto your baby even when shaded. Sunburn is also still possible on overcast days as UV rays penetrate clouds.

CHECK THE UV INDEX

7

Sun protection measures are required whenever the UV index is 3 or higher. It averages 12-13 (extreme) around noon during SEQ summers, which can cause sunburn in less than 10 minutes if unprotected. Consider early morning and late afternoon outings when the UV index is lower. Download the Free SunSmart Global UV app to track the UV index in your area.  (https://www.sunsmart. com.au/resources/sunsmart-app)

FINDING THE RIGHT balance

Juggling family life and a demanding job can be tough. Sam Alexander found the perfect solution.

As parents, time management has become an art form, with much of our lives revolving around our children’s routines and schedules. From meals and bedtimes to appointments, sporting commitments and everything in between, there is plenty to consider. So when it comes to returning to work, finding something you enjoy doing while maintaining a good work/life balance is like hitting the jackpot.

For 48-year-old Sam Alexander, that’s exactly how she felt when she landed her job in outside school hours care. Mum to a 16-year-old and stepmother to a nine-yearold, Sam found herself reassessing which path was right for her after her manager role in a roadside assistance call centre was made redundant after 19 years of service.

“I was volunteering at the school tuckshop when I saw an ad for an administrator role at the school’s after-school hours care service, which sounded perfect for me. It was not far from home and gave me the opportunity to get back into the workplace after having time off,” Sam said.

“I already had some understanding of the childcare side of the role, as, funnily enough, I’d started a diploma in early childhood education and care when I first finished high school—I just never finished it because it didn’t suit me at the time.”

Sam said she leapt at the opportunity and quickly fell in love with the job.

“It has just clicked with me. The work/ life balance is incredible for someone with school-aged children; I pretty much work school hours, finish most days by 5 pm, and it’s flexible around me and my family.”

Sam said that while her managerial

experience has helped her progress, and she has since stepped up into the 2IC (second in charge) service administrator role, her manager encouraged her to gain a qualification to grow her knowledge and skills within the industry.

“I really wanted to do the role justice and gain a better understanding of the childcare side and had heard that the Certificate III in Outside of School Hours Care (10983NAT) was subsidised under FeeFree TAFE funding, meaning I could study online, at my own pace, and at no cost,” Sam said.

“It was important for me to find a course that would be flexible enough to maintain my work/life balance, so studying online was the perfect fit for me. For anyone balancing work and family life with study, you’ll know there will be times when you’ll be studying while everyone else is in bed. However, as I was already working in the industry, I found it a little easier. If things got too much—for example, if family matters arose or work was going through a busy period—I had the flexibility to push back a unit to the next course date.”

Sam commenced her studies in April 2023 and said she was surprised and heartened by how supported she felt throughout her studies.

“The way it was set out was great— there was one central location for all the reference and learning materials and links to direct you in the right direction for each topic,” she said.

“Even though I was doing it all online, I never felt like I was doing it alone; I had the same teacher throughout all of my units, and she was super responsive if we emailed

“IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO FIND A COURSE THAT WOULD BE FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN MY WORK/LIFE BALANCE, SO STUDYING ONLINE WAS THE PERFECT FIT FOR ME.

questions and would happily arrange Zoom meetings with me and the other students if we didn’t quite grasp something or felt like we were struggling.

Sam graduated in August this year and said she is proud to have her qualification and, with it, a greater understanding of the work the educational team within her service does every day.

“It gave me a chance to learn those skills and apply them as an educator, which I believe, in turn, has made me a better manager,” Sam said.

“It’s certainly worth doing; if you have kids going to school, it offers a great work/life balance. The course has enabled me to seize opportunities, and as a parent, I feel I have an advantage in knowing how to work with and respond to children.

“I gain a lot of satisfaction from my work— you can really see the kids’ character and personalities shine, and you help guide and shape their future, which is a pretty great feeling.”

With employment opportunities for educational aides anticipated to increase by 9.4 per cent across the state over the five years from 2021-22 to 2025-26, and 16.8 per cent on the Sunshine Coast alone (according to Jobs Queensland), there has never been a better time to get started in the industry.

GRAMMAR’S growing minds

We take a peek inside the Sunshine Coast Grammar School's Early Learning Centre, where curiosity takes flight.

Located in the heart of Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s 100-acre (40-hectare) playground, Grammar Early Learning Centre is not your ordinary childcare experience.

Combining the school's extensive and very impressive facilities with an inquiry-based early years program, Grammar ELC is in the enviable position of providing its youngest students with a well-rounded blend of school readiness and exploration.

Grammar Early Learning Kindy teacher Sarah Peterson explains the program focuses on enabling children to be curious and explores various educational offerings.

“Children can identify activities they're interested in," Ms Peterson says. "This helps our families with what after-school programs they might participate in the future.”

EDUCATION

Exposure to a wide range of activities not only sparks interest in students but also develops their social, fine and gross motor skills in new and diverse ways.

“Students develop the confidence to step outside their comfort zone,” Ms Peterson says. “If they've been encouraged to try things that may be unfamiliar to them when young, they're much more confident to try new and challenging activities once they get to school and beyond.”

RAINFOREST KINDY

Surrounded by a magnificent rainforest, Grammar Early Learning Centre takes full advantage of its location by offering weekly Rainforest Kindy sessions.

“Our school rainforest area overlooks our picturesque lakes, and we enjoy free play and exploring in nature," Ms Peterson says. "We watch the seasons and make connections to our natural surroundings. It's a very beautiful space."

The Rainforest Kindy helps children build resilience, encourages confidence and growth while making and building on environmental heritage connections.

SWIMMING AND SPORT

Grammar Early Learning Centre offers on-site swimming lessons at the Grammar Aquatic Centre. There is also a comprehensive sports program, including tennis, in its weekly rotations. Both activities can feed into the main school program, where children can continue lessons as they develop and grow.

The Centre also participates in Ready Steady Go Kids, which introduces 10 core sports to kids in a fun, child-centric way. This helps children develop a broad range of skills and creates a positive connection with sport.

“The Ready Steady Go Kids program was designed by a paediatric physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. It aims to enhance children’s gross and fine motor skills, while encouraging a love for sports and preparing them for the early school years,” Ms Peterson says.

also do weekly yoga. This allows children to experience mindfulness and the calming effects of yoga and meditation.

ACADEMIC FOUNDATIONS

Of course, in a well-rounded early learning program, academic foundations are critical.

“We have a strong focus on early literacy and numeracy,” Ms Peterson says.

“Academic experiences are more playbased and child-led in our early learning setting. We take each child’s individual interests and incorporate them into our program, planning for those children who are ready for writing and numbers.”

Kindy students also participate in a weekly Japanese program through the Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program. The program helps children learn to respect diversity as they grasp new cultures. ELLA encourages families to

share home languages, too. The Centre also has a strong focus on Indigenous culture and acknowledging the local First Nations people, the Gubbi Gubbi people.

Students are encouraged to read and borrow new books at the weekly library sessions held at Sunshine Coast Grammar School Primary Library.

“Reading to children supports them in literacy learning and engagement, including listening to sounds, words, and language," Ms Peterson says. "It also encourages creativity, imagination, thinking skills, and excitement. Children are encouraged to ask questions, which helps expand their understanding of the world around them,” says Ms Peterson.

"This gives them a real passion for learning and helps prepare them for school.”

30 YEARS OF LEARNING AT MOUNTAIN CREEK

As Mountain Creek State School celebrates its 30th anniversary, we sat down with Principal Sean Bennett to learn about the school's celebrations and what's in store for the next 30 years.

Congratulations on celebrating 30 years of Mountain Creek State School! Can you tell us a little bit about the school's history?

Mountain Creek State School was established in 1994 by founding principal Randall Burow. The school has a proud heritage built on traditional values, including pride in appearance and outstanding academic, cultural, and sporting success. Our students thrive in a caring environment based on respect and effective relationships.

Since those days, our lovely school has become a cornerstone of the community in beautiful Mountain Creek! Today, we have an enrolment of almost 1000 students and

provide quality learning for students from Prep to Year 6.

The school’s supportive ethos is captured in the motto ‘Caring, Sharing and Learning Together.’  Although the motto was established in 1994, we believe we embody that ethos as much today as we did when the school opened.

The school and the community have changed a lot in those 30 years!

Yes! Over the 30 years, we’ve grown from a couple of classrooms to an expansive, fully air-conditioned campus, with every classroom boasting a 20-point interactive touchscreen display and wireless internet connectivity, enabling teachers and students to engage in 21st-century learning.

Today, Mountain Creek State School is a high-performing coeducational campus recognised as a school of distinction. We continue to seek to set the benchmark for educational excellence through committed teachers, innovative programs, quality facilities, and strong community partnerships. Individual talents are nurtured through highly trained staff and partnerships, and Programs of Excellence ensure highperforming students are challenged to excel. Yet, we are probably most proud of our place

in the community. We truly value the positive and productive relationships between the school, parents, and the local community at Mountain Creek, as we believe that these relationships are central to enabling children to achieve their potential.

What have you been doing to celebrate the big 3-0 birthday?

We’ve had many events at MCSS to commemorate the milestone.

A portrait of the foundation

Principal, Randall Burow, has been installed high on the wall in the office foyer. He overlooks the daily comings and goings as if to marvel at the ongoing innovations in his beloved school. Around the room, etched in large letters, are the words that guided his work in establishing the school 30 years ago.

What's in store for MCSS in the future?

Randall was firmly committed to the social and emotional wellbeing of students and staff, and 30 years later, the school community still benefits from this. Therefore, to continue his work, we are implementing The Resilience Project (theresilience project.com. au) throughout the school.

MCSS

campus in early 2000

The project's underlying message is gratitude, mindfulness, empathy, and emotional literacy, which addresses the personal and social capabilities of the Australian Curriculum.

We are very excited about how this will further support the wellbeing and growth of our wonderful Creekers over the next 30 years!

WHAT IS THE RESILIENCE PROJECT?

The Resilience Project is an evidencebased program designed to promote mental health in schools. Through engaging lessons and resources, it teaches students, teachers, and parents the importance of gratitude, empathy, mindfulness, and emotional literacy. The program offers comprehensive support for educators and includes professional development opportunities and online resources.

GRATITUDE

Paying attention to the things we have right now, and not worrying about what we don't have. We practise gratitude by noticing the positives around us.

EMPATHY

Putting ourselves in the shoes of others so we feel what they are feeling. We practise empathy by being kind and compassionate towards other people.

MINDFULNESS

Our ability to be calm and in the present moment. We practise mindfulness by slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time.

EMOTIONAL LITERACY

Our ability to label our emotions helps us soften negative emotions and find positive emotions. We practise emotional literacy by labelling our emotions as we experience them.

Embark on a LEARNING QUEST

Pacific Lutheran College introduces an exciting new program, the ‘Pacific Quest Program’, to inspire a new generation of learners.

Pacific Lutheran College is excited to introduce the new Pacific Quest Program targeted at Year 6 and 7 students as they engage in the Arts and Technologies through two specialised learning programs—ArtsQuest and TechQuest.

“This innovative initiative is designed to nurture creativity, independence, and confidence in our Middle College students, in line with our Four Pillars of Learning: Learning to Be, Learning Together, Learning to Learn and Learning to Know and Do, that underpin Pacific’s learning journey,” shares Mrs Jo Belchamber, Head of Middle College Learning at Pacific Lutheran College.

The Pacific Quest Program is focused on problem-based, experiential learning, encouraging students to see themselves as responsible and capable global citizens. This program reflects Pacific’s commitment

to providing forward-thinking, dynamic education that prepares Pacific students for the future.

“A key part of the success behind developing this program has been the involvement of Nicole Dyson and the Future Anything team,” says Mrs Jo Belchamber.

Renowned for its innovative approach to education, Future Anything has supported Pacific Lutheran College’s highly skilled Arts and Technologies educators to design the Pacific Quest Program.

“Nicole Dyson and the Future Anything team have played a pivotal role in ensuring this program is not only aligned with the new curriculum but is also innovative in both design and delivery,” says Mrs Jo Belchamber.

“This collaboration has ensured that both semester-long programs—ArtsQuest and TechQuest —are not only future-focused but also lead to teams of students demonstrating their unique thought processes, skill development and creative responses to learning challenges.”

ARTSQUEST: EXPRESS, CREATE, INSPIRE

ArtsQuest is a transformative arts program that blends drama, dance, visual arts, and media arts into an immersive experience that encourages self-expression, creativity, and performance. Through ArtsQuest, students will develop a collaborative performing arts showcase, blending choreography, dance, visual and media arts, and contemporary technology such as augmented reality (AR). This integrated approach

“THIS INNOVATIVE INITIATIVE IS DESIGNED TO NURTURE CREATIVITY, INDEPENDENCE, AND CONFIDENCE IN OUR MIDDLE COLLEGE STUDENTS

reflects the Australian Arts Curriculum, which recognises the interconnectedness of art forms and promotes a holistic understanding of the arts as a medium for self-expression.

“With the guidance of our specialist Arts teachers, students develop not only artistic skills but also dispositions to understand how a variety of creative expression can be used to explore personal, cultural and social contexts of their worlds,” says Miss Elise Black, Head of Visual Arts at Pacific Lutheran College. ArtsQuest strongly emphasises teamwork and collaboration, which are key skills for intellectual growth and future creative endeavours.

“ArtsQuest helps students grow in self-awareness, self-expression

and emotional intelligence. The program empowers students to see themselves as interdependent, creative and spiritual individuals,” says Miss Elise Black.

TECHQUEST: DESIGN, INNOVATE, THRIVE

TechQuest is an inquiry-based learning experience designed to immerse Pacific students in the exciting world of technology, design thinking and innovation. The program uses contemporary pedagogies to integrate Digital Technologies, Design Technologies, Food and Wellbeing Technologies, and Engineering Principles and Systems. Through TechQuest, students learn to ideate, prototype, refine, and implement solutions to real-world challenges, developing essential design skills alongside intellectual dispositions such as curiosity, perseverance and adaptability.

Guided and supported by Future Anything’s expertise, the program culminates in a showcase event, with students pitching their own innovative solutions to complex local and global issues.

“TechQuest fosters self-awareness and resilience through hands-on, project-based learning,” says Mrs Nicole Schirripa, Head of Innovation & Emerging Technologies and Head of Digital Technology. “Students gain a sense of identity as innovators and problemsolvers, well-equipped for the future. They also develop important life skills such as teamwork, creativity, and thinking critically and navigating complex challenges.”

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE

Pacific Lutheran College continues to lead the way in providing students with the tools they need to succeed, empowering them to become independent, enterprising and positively future-orientated.

By embedding the arts and technologies in student-led inquiry projects, the Pacific Quest Program will inspire students to become active participants in their own learning, developing a blend of artistic, technological, and intellectual skills. Teams of specialist teachers will facilitate as Middle College students collaborate on problem-based learning projects in specialised learning environments traditionally reserved for Senior students. The program embodies Pacific Lutheran College’s commitment to fostering students who are not just learners but co-creators in their learning journey.
