EDGE EARLY LEARNING BOOK A TOUR TODAY

Here it is—summer—the big one—the season when everything happens! The school year ends, Christmas concerts and festivities fill our calendars, we juggle activities and work during the long school holidays, try to squeeze in some family time (funny, right?!), and kick off another school year—all within 12 weeks.

It’s a whirlwind of activity, and it can be exhausting. Financial pressures and ongoing kid worries intensify amidst all this change. I’m exhausted just writing about it!

For me, this is traditionally the time when parenting burnout really kicks in. I swear I’ll lighten the load each year and be more organised, but it always seems to pile up.

more amazing. The little humans who never slept at night and needed me for everything are now blossoming into incredible people. They’re funny, thoughtful, and full of life.

And while Christmas may not be quite as magical as it once was, there’s no visiting Santa or kids excitedly jumping on the bed at 4 am, the joy of watching my kids grow and thrive is far greater. It’s a reminder that parenting isn’t just about the holidays or the school year. It’s about the little moments, the laughter, the tears, and the unconditional love.

And while Christmas may not be quite as wondrous as it once was, the joy of watching my kids grow and thrive is far greater.

But as the kids get older, things do get a little easier. Christmas becomes less wondrous, but school holidays are less fraught, and I’m less of a frazzled mess. And each year, as they grow older, they become

So, to all the parents out there feeling the strain of the busy season, know that you’re not alone. Take a deep breath, and remember you’re doing an incredible job. And as your kids get older, you’ll look back on these hectic times with a smile, knowing it was all worth it.

With love,

Family-focused Brisbane medical practice Growlife Medical has been recognised for its exceptional care and community involvement by winning the Queensland General Practice of the Year award for 2024.

The prestigious award, presented by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire Growlife team.

Growlife Medical co-founder Dr Aaron Chambers said he was thrilled to accept the 2024 award.

“This is an amazing testament to all the hard work and dedication to our community that every Growlife member provides daily. This award is a tribute to our purpose at Growlife Medical: to support individuals, grow stronger families, and create Australia’s healthiest communities.

“General practice is a team sport, and it is just so rewarding to work with a team who have

NEW AQUATIC CENTRE for Beenleigh

Swimmers in Queensland’s fastest-growing city are a step closer to having a second Olympic-sized pool to enjoy, with works now underway on the $23.1 million Beenleigh Aquatic Centre upgrade.

The 50-metre, eight-lane swimming pool is expected to open in mid-2025. It will replace the current thirty-three-yard pool, which opened in 1964.

local swimming enthusiasts but also enable Logan to support more training, competitions and community sporting events.

The upgrades include an expanded children’s water play area, shaded seating areas, modern change room facilities, a kiosk, and accessible and familyfriendly amenities.

Founded in 2017, Growlife Medical was established to provide a patient-centred approach to healthcare. to generate clean energy, enable stormwater harvesting and use recycled materials.

The indoor pool remains open to the public while works are completed, and existing programs will continue uninterrupted.

Federal Minister for Cities Jenny McAllister said, “The Logan community is right to be excited by works starting on these facilities. It’s a very real possibility that some of our future Olympians will start honing their craft right here at the future Beenleigh Aquatic Centre.”

Macalister MP Melissa McMahon added, “A new Olympic pool may see our future swimming heroes develop their skills locally and deliver the goods in 2032. And there is something for everyone with this upgrade with new areas for children and more familyfriendly amenities.”

A luxury getaway

WITHOUT THE PRICE

Luxury and affordability? Who says you can’t have it all on your next holiday? And it’s right on your doorstep.

Let’s be real: family holidays have taken a backseat in recent years. Between the cost-of-living crisis and the general chaos of life, it’s easy to feel like a getaway is just a distant dream. But what if we told you there’s a way to escape the every day and experience a touch of luxury without breaking the bank?

A trip to the brand-new luxury cabins at Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is what every family needs right now. These aren’t your average holiday park cabins. We’re talking airconditioned bliss, sumptuous beds, marble bathrooms with rain showers and a divine range of shampoo and soaps. You’ll feel like you’re living in the lap of luxury.

With fully-equipped kitchens, including a dishwasher and a massive fridge with a chilled water dispenser, these cabins offer everything you need for a comfortable and indulgent stay for the whole family.

“These are a bit more upmarket from our previous cabins, with more modern decor, brass fittings in the kitchen and bathroom areas and a little more luxury,” says Candy Workman, Sales and Business Development Manager at Gold Coast Holiday Park.

What’s wonderful is that you can enjoy the luxury of a hotel, and it comes with the facilities and activities that families want from a getaway. An epic waterpark, giant jumping pillow, pedal cars, movie nights, sports facilities and the tastiest dining, which is also surprisingly affordable, is the best of both worlds and is right here in Southeast Queensland.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS TO SUIT EVERYONE

If the luxury cabins aren’t your thing, Big4

Gold Coast has plenty of accommodation options to suit every budget and taste. From non-powered camping sites to safari tents with an outdoor bath, they have catered for everyone.

Camping sites: Choose from ensuite, powered or non-powered sites. The nonpowered sites are well-sized grass sites alongside the tranquil Saltwater Creek, offering the best rustic camping experience, whilst the ensuite sites provide the best of the park with the privacy and comfort of your own bathroom.

Motel rooms: The family motel rooms offer all the convenience and comfort of a motel in the heart of the park. They can sleep up to four people.

Safari tents: Fitting up to six people, each tent has a four-poster bed, a bunk bed, two single beds in a nook, a kitchenette, a bathroom and a living/dining space. There is also a gorgeous veranda with a sunken lounge and a clawfoot bathtub. Both tents overlook Saltwater Creek.

Cabins: There are a range of cabins, from cosy 3-star comfort to luxury retreats. All cabins are comfortable and spacious, with everything you need, including a full kitchen (excluding an oven) and a washing machine in the three-bedroom cabins. The three-bedroom cabins fit up to 10 people, and the family cabins fit up to six.

The park has a fully decked-out camp kitchen for all guests, with BBQ space, fridge and freezer storage, hotplates, ovens, microwaves, fridges, freezers and toasters.

FAMILY FEASTS

One of the biggest perks of a family holiday at

Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is the fantastic on-site café. Whether you’re craving a hearty breakfast, a quick lunch, or a delicious dinner, you’ll find something to satisfy your taste buds. The café has a dog-friendly area, so your furry friends can join you for a meal. The food is not only delicious but also incredibly affordable, making it easy to treat yourself and your loved ones without breaking the bank. So put your feet up and relax… your taste buds will thank you!

To make the visit as easy as possible for families, Big4 Gold Coast has also introduced QR codes in all the cabanas around the pool and the waterpark, on the tables in Nibbles Café and Nibbles Terrace, as well as on the bar-top seating in the Terrace, so guests can scan, order and pay for their food and have it delivered straight to them.

THINGS TO DO

Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park isn’t just about luxurious cabins; it’s a playground for the whole family! There’s something for everyone, from epic water adventures to cosy movie nights.

With over 300 metres of slides BIG4 Gold Coast Water Park is the perfect place for kids of all ages to play for hours. Parents can look on from the comfort of one of the poolside cabanas or get in and try out the super-slides and interactive play features, including:

• A multi-lane body slide

• 4 x aqua tube slides

• 1 x compact slide

• The tipping bucket of all tipping buckets

• A combined total of 317m of water slides!

The heated pool and spa are the perfect place to unwind if you feel like something more relaxed. While the new eco-friendly

playground is hugely popular with the little ones. Made from recycled materials, such as ocean waste, plastics and textiles, it is designed to motivate children to play, learn how to move, improve balance, and socialise with other kids.

“The new playground is such a great place where the kids can go and have fun,” says Candy. “There are several seating areas, so parents can relax and enjoy a coffee. Plus, it’s next to the basketball courts where older kids can play games. The dog park is also right there, so the dogs can have a runaround. So the whole family can go down the back of the park and burn off some steam.”

And let’s not forget the Giant Jumping Pillow, offering hours of bouncing fun for kids of all ages! There’s also a kids’ activity centre with arts and crafts, hair braiding, and special guests to entertain the little ones. The park regularly organises themed events and activities for families and children, such as Halloween, Easter, Christmas, and Movie Nights under the stars.

For those who love the great outdoors, Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is a nature lover’s paradise. With 20 acres of land, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy a bushwalk and spot local wildlife like koalas and kangaroos. The park also has several pristine fishing spots for those who like to fish

IT’S TRULY ACCESSIBLE

Ensuring the park is accessible to all is a core focus at BIG4 Gold Coast. Therefore, this inclusive holiday park offers plenty of accessible accommodation and facilities, including a three-bedroom accessible deluxe cabin in the Oasis area.

For accommodation, the accessible motel rooms offer the convenience and comfort of motel accommodation in the heart of the park. The accessible family deluxe cabin is the perfect choice for a more extended stay with all the comforts of home. The park also has an accessible two-bedroom terrace close to the waterpark.

NEW JUNIOR HUB FOR SAINT STEPHEN’S COLLEGE

Entering Saint Stephen’s College Junior College is a memorable experience that sets students on an inspiring path of academic and personal growth.

From day one, each child is warmly welcomed into a vibrant learning community that encourages curiosity, creativity, and the pursuit of knowledge and excellence. Guided by dedicated teachers who are passionate about fostering each child’s individual strengths, Saint Stephen’s empowers students to develop their full academic

potential while embodying essential values like perseverance, respect, integrity, diversity, and empathy.

In early 2025, Saint Stephen’s College will open its doors to a brand-new $14 million Junior Hub—a state-of-the-art facility designed to inspire young learners. The innovative space will be the hub for curiosity and exploration, with resources for academic and creative development.

This latest addition will enhance the worldclass learning that matches our students’ ambitions and enthusiasm.

The College offers a wellstructured approach to early education through two distinct programs: the Foundations Program and the Consolidations Program. These programs are thoughtfully designed to cater to the evolving needs of students as they journey through their primary years. In the Foundations Program, younger students explore the fundamentals of learning in a nurturing environment that emphasises discovery and joy. As they transition into the Consolidations Program, students are encouraged to further their academic skills and deepen their understanding, fostering growth both in academics and in personal development.

Both programs provide a collaborative and supportive setting where teachers focus on the holistic development of each child. This “whole child” approach not only builds foundational skills for lifelong learning but also creates an atmosphere where students feel inspired, motivated, and stimulated to explore new ideas and challenge their own limits. The College experience at Saint Stephen’s empowers students to think

creatively, act responsibly, and approach each day with a sense of wonder and commitment to their education.

Families are encouraged to book a tour of Saint Stephen’s College to experience firsthand the unique environment and exceptional programs that make the College

a leader in education. With limited spaces available, the College recommends that those families considering Prep or Year 7 enrolment for 2027 to apply early to secure a spot.

What should my child know before starting school?

Is your child starting school this year? If so, it's natural to be curious about what they should be able to do, or concerned that their peers seem more advanced than them.

Should they be able to write their name? Know their sight words? Hold a pencil? There is so much conflicting advice about what your child should be able to do before they start prep that it is hard to know where to turn and what to believe.

However, while it is tempting to focus on the educational skills you think your preppie should have before starting school, the experts say it is more important to consider how they will settle in emotionally.

Ms Nebauer, a childhood teacher from

Goodstart Early Learning, says ensuring children are ready for school emotionally and physically is essential for a smooth transition.

“The move from childcare to school can be a daunting experience, and it’s important that every child has the best possible chance of adjusting successfully,” Ms Nebauer said.

She works with her students to teach them how to get a drink of water, put their bags away and where to put their hats. She says parents should help their preppies learn to be independent. “It’s all about encouraging the parents to let the children take control and show they have the skills to help them be more independent,” Ms Nebauer said.

“I think the biggest adjustment that the children will experience is the move away from

TIPS FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN STARTING SCHOOL

• Help improve your child’s independence by encouraging them to carry and put their bags away.

• Get them into a daily routine, so they understand how their day may look.

• Encourage them to go to the toilet independently, recognise their belongings and eat and drink without help.

• Ensure they are eating a healthy breakfast each day.

• Drive past the school so they know what to expect. If the school runs them, go to a prep introductory session.

• Ensure you have everything you need for their first day—uniforms, hats, school bags—and that they are labelled with your child’s name.

• Read aloud and sing songs with your child. This helps to develop awareness of language patterns and concentration.

• Take them out and about to experience new things to stimulate their natural curiosity and fire their imagination.

• Play board and card games and sports with them. They are all good for developing their problem-solving and language abilities, as well as their maths and social skills.

play-based learning at childcare to a school system which is regimented and structured. Teaching the children how to listen, how to sit still and what rules they will have to follow are all important skills.

“I don’t want them to get to school and not know how to get a drink of water or ask a question,” Ms Nebauer said. She added that helping to prepare the children for school in this way means there will be “less anxiety and concern”.

It is important to remember that all children are different and will start school with different skill sets. Don’t be tempted to compare your child with their peers. You’ll be amazed at how far they will come in their first year of school—relax and enjoy!

UNVEILING A NEW ERA FOR BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE

BRISBANE BOYS' COLLEGE UNVEILS A MASTER PLAN WITH 43 PROJECTS TO MODERNISE ITS CAMPUS, ENSURING STUDENTS HAVE THE BEST TOOLS FOR FUTURE SUCCESS.

With 43 mid-scale and major projects, Brisbane Boys' College has revealed its ambitious Master Plan to transform its historic campus. By adding cutting-edge new facilities, reinvigorating existing ones, and further connecting and unifying the campus physically and socially, the aim is to ensure that every student will have the tools to thrive for decades to come.

“Our campus is more than a collection of buildings. It holds our heart and our soul. It's a conduit for where our students learn, discover and overcome,” said the President of the Old Collegians’ Association.

Mr Andre Asson, Headmaster of Brisbane Boys' College reflected, “Since my time

here as Headmaster at Brisbane Boys' College, one thing continues to amaze me: the brotherhood and the bond of our boys across year levels. Therefore, a key consideration of our Master Plan campus vision design was to facilitate increased connectedness throughout campus.”

Award-winning architect Hayball was tasked with conceiving the Master Plan.

“When the board engaged Hayball to conceive the Master Plan campus vision, we knew we needed to understand the DNA of Brisbane Boys' College,” said Mr Graham Legerton, Principal of Hayball.

With this in mind, Hayball facilitated a series of deep listening workshops across the wider school community.

“This engagement helped to identify issues, priorities and opportunities for us to build into the functionality of the Master Plan campus vision and continued evolution of the campus,” said Mr Legerton.

“The input from our students was truly special,” added Headmaster Asson. “They were excited and curious for what the future could bring, and I loved hearing some of their innovative ways they wanted to create a modern and high-tech learning environment.”

One of the current students even built his ideas in Minecraft and showed his designs to the Headmaster.

“It's passion like this that really helps expand our vision for building a transformative learning environment for generations to come,” said Mr Asson.

USING PROTOTYPE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Designed and built to revolutionise education at Brisbane Boys' College, the new state-of-the-art Prototype Classrooms deliver experimental spaces to workshop new ideas and innovations.

“A key part of the Master Plan campus vision is the prototype learning environment that we are using to gather feedback from staff and students on how they use the

space before we move forward,” said Mr Don O’Rorke, Chair of School Advisory Council.

“This allows flexibility so that we can adapt to the needs of our community and future-proof our investment.”

The learnings from this ongoing practical experiment will inform the implementation of the Master Plan Campus Vision, ensuring every classroom in every building is tailored to achieve the best academic results for students.

USHERING IN THE FUTURE WHILE HONOURING A LEGACY

As they look towards the future, the historical influence of Brisbane Boys' College heritage and traditions has not been forgotten.

“The smaller renewal projects often have a big cultural impact, so we've carefully considered how the campus points back to our iconic beginnings,” said Mr O’Rorke. “For instance, no matter where you are on the grounds, you can look up and see the clock tower. This helps connect the school and allows the historical buildings to breathe and be respected.”

“Honouring our past while looking to the future is what this Master Plan campus vision is all about,” added Mr Asson. Progress is well underway, with ten projects completed during the 2024 school year.

“Of all the changes we've experienced

in our world, there's one thing I know that will continue to stand the test of time: our gentleman of honour being at the forefront of boys' education,” said Mr Asson. “I am truly honoured to help lead the charge with this Master Plan campus vision to ensure that there's more than one way to thrive at Brisbane Boys’ College. This is our future, and it's built for boys.”

IGNITING A LIFELONG LOVE OF LEARNING IN THE EARLY YEARS

Nurturing young minds, fostering a love of learning, and preparing children for school is at the core of life at Edge Early Learning.

Recognising the crucial role of early childhood education, Edge goes beyond traditional childcare to create an environment where children can thrive. By providing stimulating activities and a supportive atmosphere, Edge inspires curiosity and a genuine passion for learning, setting the stage for future academic success.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO LEARNING

Edge provides enriching learning experiences through quality education and care for children aged from 6 weeks to school age by instilling a love of learning through play-based experiences and resources.

With 34 centres across southeast Queensland, each Edge centre features modern classrooms, state-of-the-art learning facilities, and engaging and spacious, natural outdoor play areas.

support and enhance learning milestones and journeys across all areas of development through Edge’s educational programs.

One of the highlights that sets Edge apart is the backing of a passionate team of qualified and experienced educators who

The educational program is built upon four fundamental pillars: education, wellbeing, community, and sustainability. These pillars form the foundation of their approach to early childhood

The educational programs are tailored to each age group— nursery, toddler and kindergarten—and encourage children to learn and explore interests across a range of STEAM-based subjects, including Science, Technology, Engineering,

“At Edge Early Learning, we understand that the roots of a lifelong love for learning are firmly established in the earliest years of a child’s life,” Edge Early Learning CEO Annie Bryce said.

“We encourage children to explore new

ideas and learn through play, as we cater to children from 6 weeks to school age and focus on preparing them for primary school, socially, emotionally, and developmentally.”

Edge’s philosophy is centred around a holistic style of learning through an inquirybased learning approach. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and learn through play.

This approach is supported by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which emphasises play-based learning to guide children toward their developmental goals.

EQUIPPING CHILDREN FOR THE ADVENTURES AHEAD

As children take their first steps into primary school, it marks a significant and transformative moment in their lives.

The process can be an exciting and daunting time for children as they transition from their day-to-day learning routine to their first year of education.

Edge understands the importance of this transition, and its Kindergarten program is designed to prepare children for this exciting leap.

The program not only equips children with the academic skills they need but also nurtures

" We believe IN EQUIPPING CHILDREN WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY AND PERSONALLY."

their social and emotional development, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

“We’re not just preparing children for school; we’re preparing them for a future where they become confident and involved learners,” Mrs Bryce said.

“We believe in equipping children with the tools they need to succeed academically and personally, setting the stage for a lifetime of learning.”

A fundamental aspect of Edge’s approach is its strong partnerships with local schools. These connections create a seamless bridge between the familiar environment of Edge and the new adventure of primary school so children can step into their next phase of education with confidence and ease.

and wellbeing and actively promote healthy eating and an active lifestyle within the centres.

Each centre offers daily nutritious meals made by in-house chefs, ensuring that every child receives the essential fuel for growth and development.

NOURISHING YOUNG MINDS

While education is at the heart of Edge’s values, they also understand the significance of health

Catering to all dietary requirements, including morning tea, lunch, and afternoon snacks, all served in a communal setting to encourage socialisation.

Children enjoy a wide variety of meals, salads, soups, mains and desserts. Some of the children’s favourites are focaccias, pinwheels, chicken curry, spaghetti and meatballs, and burgers they can construct themselves.

“We are conscious that healthy habits ingrained in a child’s first five years will set the tone for future wellbeing, and that’s why we are

so passionate about the health and wellbeing of children at a young age,” Annie said.

Edge is leading the way in the early learning industry, offering mindfulness activities such as yoga and incorporating sustainable practices such as utilising bamboo nappies and wipes, sunscreen, and using environmentally friendly cleaning products, all included in the daily fee.

FLEXIBILITY FOR FAMILIES

Edge understands that modern families have diverse needs and schedules. Centres across South East Queensland operate up to 12 hours daily, Monday through Friday.

This allows families and carers flexibility and allows them to maximise their Child Care Subsidy (CCS) allocation.

Edge Early Learning instils a love for learning that goes far beyond the classroom and empowers children with the tools they need to succeed in school and life.

With 34 centres across South East Queensland and 61 centres nationwide, Edge Early Learning delivers quality early education to more than 6,000 children daily. It provides over 1800 jobs across Queensland, ACT, and South Australia.

Early education, by design

Imagine a place where every corner, every colour and every carefully chosen material invites children to explore, create, feel at ease, and learn—all in an environment that’s as inspiring as it is nurturing. With 20 sites now serving families across Queensland and New South Wales, Harmony Early Education is expanding its unique approach, bringing a sense of calm and wonder to the years that define early childhood.

Having recently opened two new facilities in Griffin and Burleigh Heads, the business has a growing network of centres and an extensive acquisition schedule, offering more families access to its unique, child-first approach.

Harmony Managing Director Gabrielle Giufre says everything they do is intentional and informed, designed to create harmony across environments, educators and education.

“We understand the profound responsibility and impact involved in shaping young lives and put children at the heart of everything we do,” says Ms Giufre.

Harmony’s learning approach is clear: embrace a holistic approach to each child’s early learning and development.

“We take the best from educational philosophy and evidence-based design to create studios that support, protect, and grow,” says Ms Giufre. “Finely tuned to the needs of children, we provide comfort and confidence through consistency, nurturing a curiosity for learning that leads to potential.”

Even mealtimes are part of Harmony’s holistic approach. Fresh, seasonal menus are carefully curated every two weeks and prepared on-site each day. By collaborating with medical and pediatric nutrition experts, Harmony’s meals align with Nutrition Australia’s national guidelines, ensuring that every bite supports healthy growth and development.

The core of Harmony is to create beautifully rich aesthetic environments to support children’s learning and evoke wellbeing in a harmonious space

“Every detail at Harmony is part of a larger story—one of nurturing individuality, inclusivity, and imagination,” says Ms Giufre. “Each child is considered a confident and capable member of our learning community, and we embrace the unique and understand the power of celebrating individuals.”

Known for its stunning, thoughtfully designed spaces, Harmony recognises the environment as the ‘third educator’ and provides engaging indoor and outdoor spaces that enable children

to participate in different types of play, investigation, and real-life experiences.

“The core of Harmony is to create beautifully rich aesthetic environments to support children’s learning and evoke wellbeing in a harmonious space,” says Ms Giufre.

Harmony also places high importance on safety and convenience for families. Each centre has state-of-the-art safety and security systems, giving parents peace of mind from drop off to pick up. Off-street car parking at all locations makes it easy for families to access the centre safely, ensuring arrivals and departures are smooth and secure.

One of the best ways for your child to discover the Harmony difference is through a Stay and Play experience. This relaxed and fun event allows parents and children to get a feel for the space before starting care. During these sessions, parents are invited to visit a center with their children for a play experience, where they can explore and interact with educators and other young learners.

SUN-SAFE UPF LEVELS

degrees. However, noting point 1 above, swap the muslin for a breathable UPF 50 cover. Directional shading is another safe method. Instead of fully covering the pram, use a sun-safe cloth to block the sun from the direction it’s hitting, leaving the other side open for airflow.

• UPF 15: Minimum protection93.3% UV rays blocked

• UPF 30: Good protection96.7% UV rays blocked

• UPF 50/50+: Excellent UV protection - 98%+ UV rays blocked (Recommended)

• Muslin swaddles & white cotton t-shirts:  As low as UPF 5-6

7 ways to keep your baby sun-safe this summer

We’re in for a scorching summer on the coast and experts recommend babies under 12 months avoid direct sunlight. While that sounds insurmountable, here’s how to keep your baby sun-safe without having to stay indoors.

AVOID MUSLIN SWADDLES

1

While handy and found in most nappy bags, muslin swaddles aren’t actually sun-safe. Sure, they create shade under a pram and can cover exposed skin, but the fabric lets through too many UV rays and doesn’t meet the minimum or recommended Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) ratings to be considered sun-protective.

USE SUN-SAFE COVERS

2

For the best possible sun protection, look for products with a certified UPF 50/50+ rating. Lightweight UV protective blankets are multi-use and can be used to shade babies in prams, baby carriers, and cars. They can even be hung up to create a shady spot for park tummy time sessions. Those with in-built magnets, like Bebe Trek’s, are even more versatile and mean no more struggling with pram clips or awkward knots.

CHOOSE UV PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

3

Consider clothing with UPF ratings for outdoor adventures. Lightweight summer clothing made from muslin or light-coloured cotton is unlikely to meet minimum sun-safe UPF levels. While most UPF 50 clothing on the market is swimwear, there are some day wear options, including Bebe Trek’s UV-protective sunsuits.

4

USE EVAPORATIVE COOLING AND DIRECTIONAL SHADING TECHNIQUES

Fully covering a pram, even with a lightweight cloth, can increase the internal pram temperature. On a hot day, this is dangerous for babies. However, there are safe ways to create extra shade.

A recent University of Sydney study found draping a damp muslin cloth over a pram combined with a clip-on fan, creates an evaporative cooling effect that reduces the internal pram temperature by around 4

5 USE SUNSCREEN AND HAT

For babies over six months, slop on sunscreen and re-apply regularly (sunscreen isn’t recommended for babies under six months due to their sensitive skin). Slap on a hat too—the earlier you start, the more used they’ll get to hats, and they’ll be less likely to pull them off when they’re older. Look for a wide-brim or legionnaire style with a UPF 50 rating.

STAY IN THE SHADE

6

Where possible, stick to the shade of trees or awnings or create your own shade. Be wary of reflective surfaces (sand, water and concrete), as UV rays can bounce back onto your baby even when shaded. Sunburn is also still possible on overcast days as UV rays penetrate clouds.

CHECK THE UV INDEX

7

Sun protection measures are required whenever the UV index is 3 or higher. It averages 12-13 (extreme) around noon during SEQ summers, which can cause sunburn in less than 10 minutes if unprotected. Consider early morning and late afternoon outings when the UV index is lower. Download the Free SunSmart Global UV app to track the UV index in your area.  (https://www.sunsmart. com.au/resources/sunsmart-app)

Preparing for Prep: A Shared Responsibility

Asparents and carers, you play a crucial role in preparing your child for the transition to Prep. While it's natural to feel a mix of emotions during this time, there are plenty of ways you can help your child feel confident and ready for their first day of school. Here are some gentle suggestions to guide you along the way:

To book your space in our extra-curricular directory, contact tanya@shoremedia.com.au

• Pre-School Preparation: Spend time with your child practicing essential skills like recognising and writing their first name, listening to stories and mastering basic self-care tasks such as dressing and using the toilet independently. Play some games with your child which will increase the visual recognition of their printed name.

• Prior to Beginning School: Familiarise your child with school routines by practicing

packing a bag, using a lunchbox and discussing basic school expectations and routines. Establish consistent family routines to support the transition to school life. Encourage your child to open their own packets of food, wrappings, containers, lunchboxes and drink bottles.

• Beginning School: As the big day approaches, ensure your child is familiar with their class details and teacher. Don’t ‘sneak’ away. Always tell your child when you are leaving and that you will be back at the end of the day when all the other parents and carers return. Be positive and enthusiastic about this new adventure, emphasising the excitement of learning and making new friends.

REMEMBER , starting Prep is just the beginning of an exciting educational journey filled with new experiences, friendships and opportunities for growth. Take a tour of The Lakes College’s Prep Classrooms at www.thelakescollege.com.au.
