Book an Adventure

THE POWER OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS

This summer, I read a book. And honestly? I was ridiculously proud of myself. I couldn’t stop telling people about it, like I’d just completed an ultramarathon or climbed Everest in thongs. But then it hit me—why was this such a big deal? Because here’s the reality: my entire goal for the summer was to read one book. Just one. And it wasn’t some dense literary masterpiece; it was a simple, escapist read. But that’s life these days, isn’t it? A relentless loop of kids, dinnerbath-bed, work, attempting to walk the dog, and collapsing in a heap, hoping for more than five hours of sleep before doing it all over again.

And yet—I used to love reading. Growing up in preinternet Manchester, books were everything. They were my adventure, my escape, my ticket to another world. I devoured stories like my life depended on it.

Xbox, group chats, and maintaining their all-important Snapchat streaks. And I get it. But books offer something no app ever will— depth, imagination, the kind of quiet joy that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

I just hope they find their way back to books one day. And that, unlike me, they don’t wait this long.

Books offer something no app ever will—depth, imagination, the kind of quiet joy that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

So, in this issue, we explore how to nurture a love of reading, even in a digital age. We delve into the magic of children’s books and their power to captivate young minds. Because maybe, just maybe, if we show our kids that books are worth celebrating, they’ll believe it, too.

So when did that change? When did reading a book become such an achievement that I felt the need to announce it?

We’re constantly told to foster a love of reading in our kids. But let’s be honest: kids won’t become what they don’t see.

My kids used to devour books, too. Now? They’re at an age where downtime means

We also have an Extracurricular Special, with a round-up of the Coast’s best after-school activities. And, if you are stuck for something different to do, we snuck down to Northshore Brisbane for a family-friendly weekend. Plus, we have all the regular news, reviews, kids events and more.

So here’s to turning pages instead of scrolling, finding joy in stories, big and small, and remembering that sometimes the best goals are the ones that bring us back to what we’ve loved all along.

With love,

SUNNYKIDS: Providing hope for vulnerable families on the Sunshine Coast

FOR MANY parents, the daily challenges of raising children can feel overwhelming. But for those facing homelessness, financial hardship, or domestic violence, the struggle is even greater. That’s where SunnyKids steps in.

The Sunshine Coast-based charity is dedicated to supporting vulnerable families, offering emergency accommodation, essential resources, and long-term assistance to help them rebuild their lives. Each year, hundreds of parents and children turn to SunnyKids for safety and stability in times of crisis.

A LIFELINE FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS

At the core of SunnyKids’ mission is a simple yet powerful belief: every child deserves a safe and happy childhood. The organisation provides immediate intervention for families escaping domestic violence and homelessness, ensuring they have access to safe housing and crucial support services.

Beyond crisis response, SunnyKids works to create lasting change through a range of programs aimed at breaking the cycle of disadvantage. Their initiatives include emergency housing and support, in-school mentoring through the awardwinning SunnyKids in Schools (SKIS) program, and strong community connections that foster a network of care.

HOW THE COMMUNITY CAN HELP

With demand for support services

on the rise, SunnyKids relies on community generosity. Donations directly fund emergency shelter, food, and vital services for families in crisis. Fundraising events such as the annual Mayoral Ball offer opportunities to contribute while engaging with the cause.

both dads and children.

“It’s a space where dads can be unapologetically hands-on and connect with others who share the parenting journey,” one facilitator shared.

The activities are designed to foster creativity, connection, and fun. Participants have enjoyed fishing, lawn bowls, pinball, and birdhouse-making workshops with the Nambour Men’s Shed. Whether casting a fishing line or crafting a keepsake, each session encourages dads and kids to bond through shared experiences.

Looking ahead, the group has exciting events planned, including swimming at the Nambour Aquatic Centre, a rocket science adventure, a scenic walk through the Maroochy Botanical Gardens, and a hands-on pizza-making session.

NAMBOUR’S Thriving Families Dads Group is creating meaningful experiences for local fathers and their children. Hosted by the Nambour Community Centre, the monthly gathering has become a vibrant space for dads to connect, share stories, and enjoy hands-on activities with their kids.

Led by two male social workers, the group offers an inclusive environment where fathers can engage openly and break through traditional parenting stereotypes. The program emphasises the importance of involved fatherhood, highlighting its positive impact on family dynamics and the well-being of

Sunshine

Coast Council has commenced construction of a new pump track in Buderim, promising to be a vibrant recreational hub for the young and young at heart.

Sunshine Coast Division 7 Councillor Ted Hungerford expressed his excitement for the project, which has been shaped by extensive community input.

“We’ve listened to what our community wanted, and a pump track in Buderim was strongly supported by residents seeking different recreation opportunities

close by,” Cr Hungerford said.

“The pump track design focuses on beginner and intermediate riders, and I know it will be popular with young families and kids of all ages. I’m thrilled we are delivering this facility for Buderim.”

The community played a key role in determining the track’s location and design. Following engagement sessions in September 2023 and December 2024, further design feedback was gathered in January 2025.

Cr Hungerford praised the

valuable input received: “We considered the feedback from our community and incorporated some excellent suggestions into the design.”

Key enhancements include additional buffer planting, seating areas, shade trees, and screening along adjacent property fences.

The Council is also exploring future additions, such as a shade sail and a drinking fountain.

Construction began on February 3, 2025, and is expected to wrap up by early April, weather permitting.

Bendigo Bank opens online safety lessons to secondary schools

Bendigo Bank has expanded its Banking Safely Online program to secondary schools to help empower young digital citizens.

Specifically designed for high school students, the face-toface sessions teach participants how to identify and avoid scams, spot financial fraud risks, and adopt secure practices for online banking transactions.

“Secondary school students encounter a surge of would-be scammers, fraudulent attempts, and other significant challenges online,” says Aaron Westberry, Senior Manager of Customer Protection at Bendigo Bank.

Online shopping and classifieds scams inflicted the greatest financial losses among those under 18 last year, with social media, text messages, and emails being the primary contact methods employed by scammers.

“While highly tech savvy, more than $2 million has been lost to scammers by Australians under 18 since 2020, data from Scamwatch shows, and our younger customers have been asking how we can help,” Mr Westberry says.

“Bringing our Banking Safely Online program to schools across Australia will help empower young digital citizens,”

What is a Pump Track?

A pump track allows riders to generate momentum through body movements rather than pedalling. It provides fun and exercise for people of all ages and skill levels while fostering community connections.

If you can’t wait to give pump track riding a try, head to the popular Sugar Bag Road Pump Track in Caloundra West, which caters to all experience levels.

Buderim was identified as an ideal location for the pump track based on the Council’s 2021 Recreation Parks Plan.

The local community voiced a desire for more informal sports opportunities for teenagers and young adults.

Forestwood Drive Park was chosen after careful consideration of factors such as flood safety, stormwater management, and preservation of natural habitats.

The final design, including community-driven amendments, is available on Have Your Say Sunshine Coast: haveyoursay. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

says Mr Westberry.

In our online lives, Mr Westberry stresses the importance of never letting your guard down against scammers who always try to catch unsuspecting students and their families off guard.

“Be cautious of promotions on social media, especially those that seem too good to be true. Avoid clicking on links unless you’re

absolutely sure about them, and be wary of calls and texts from unknown numbers asking for information – it could be a remote access scam.”

Teachers, administrators, parents, and students are encouraged to inquire with their local Bendigo Bank branch about organising a Banking Safely Online session for their secondary students.

Book an Adventure

THE POWER OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS

For parents of young children, the magic of books often begins with the simple act of turning pages together. But the power of children’s literature extends far beyond bedtime stories. From fostering creativity and curiosity to teaching critical life skills, books play a vital role in a child’s emotional, intellectual, and social development. In an era dominated by screens and distractions, cultivating a love for reading in early childhood is more important than ever.

THE WORLD THROUGH A CHILD’S EYES

For children, picture books and early readers are often their first glimpse into worlds beyond their own backyard. These stories spark curiosity and imagination, planting the seeds for creativity and exploration. Whether following a magical dragon on a quest or learning about life in a faraway land, children’s books introduce new ideas, expand horizons, and teach empathy by helping young readers see life through someone else’s perspective.

Books can also help children confront their feelings and fears. Stories about overcoming challenges—whether a character faces a big move, navigates friendships, or confronts a bully—provide young readers with tools to navigate their emotions. Books teach children to understand that struggles are normal and surmountable, empowering them to build confidence and resilience.

“Through books, children learn that characters face challenges just like they do,” says Karen Gawen, Sunshine Coast Council Young People’s Services Supervisor. “Seeing these characters persevere can encourage children to face their fears and solve problems.”

DEVELOPING CURIOSITY AND A LOVE OF LEARNING

The early years are critical for developing curiosity about the world. Books can inspire young readers to ask questions, seek answers, and explore their environment. For example, a simple story about space exploration might lead to hours spent identifying stars, while a book about dinosaurs could spark a fascination with fossils. This curiosity often leads to goalsetting. For example, a child enchanted by a story about a young chef may decide to bake a cake. Books inspire children to dream, plan, and take action, laying the foundation for lifelong learning and ambition.

BOOKS FOSTER EMPATHY AND OPEN-MINDEDNESS

Introducing children to diverse characters and experiences broadens their understanding of the world. Books featuring protagonists from different cultures, abilities, and backgrounds encourage empathy and open-mindedness

from a young age. This exposure helps children learn to appreciate differences, an essential skill in our increasingly interconnected world.

As parents, choosing books that celebrate diversity and inclusion is one of the most impactful ways to raise caring, empathetic individuals. Titles that gently address topics like environmental stewardship, cultural and social differences or historical events can encourage thoughtful conversations, even with the youngest readers.

WHY READING FOR FUN MATTERS

A love of reading begins with joy. Children who associate books with fun are more likely to develop a lifelong habit of reading, which research shows leads to better academic performance, enhanced problem-solving skills, and improved emotional wellbeing.

Children who read for pleasure experience better academic outcomes, improved mental health, and higher earning potential later in life.

two Mobile Libraries and a large eLibrary you will be sure to find something you and your children will love.”

CREATING LIFELONG READERS BEGINS YOUNG

So how can parents encourage a love of reading from an early age? Karen recommends these simple strategies:

Start early: Reading to babies and toddlers helps build language skills and fosters bonding. Even infants benefit from the rhythm and rhyme of books.

Be a role model: Children who see their parents reading are likelier to pick up the habit. Keep books visible and accessible at home.

FOR CHILDREN,

PICTURE

BOOKS AND EARLY READERS ARE OFTEN THEIR FIRST GLIMPSE INTO WORLDS BEYOND THEIR OWN BACKYARD.

Unfortunately, a recent Reading Guarantee Report from The Grattan Institute revealed that one-third of Australian students today fail to learn to read proficiently. The report’s lead author, Grattan education program director Jordana Hunter, called this crisis a ‘preventable tragedy’.

Parents can play a crucial role by making reading a positive experience at home. “Reading for fun is the key,” explains Karen. “The more that kids see reading as enjoyable, the more likely they are to stick with it—and the benefits can be seen throughout their lives.”

THE ROLE OF LIBRARIES IN BUILDING A READING CULTURE

Libraries are treasure troves for busy parents looking to foster a love of reading in their children. Offering a wide selection of books on every topic imaginable, they provide free access to stories, knowledge, and adventure.

For families, the local library is the largest ‘bookshop’—and it’s completely free. Parents can browse board books for toddlers, picture books for preschoolers, and chapter books for early readers, all while taking advantage of library programs such as storytime sessions, craft activities, and summer reading challenges.

“Libraries are an invaluable resource for parents,” says Karen. “We’re here to support families, whether they’re looking for the perfect bedtime story or want to explore new topics with their kids. With eight libraries,

Let kids choose: Allowing children to choose their own books—whether it’s a silly story about animals or a science book about volcanoes—makes reading more engaging.

Make it social: Share stories as a family or connect with friends for book-themed playdates. Discussing favourite books can create a shared reading experience.

Visit the library often: Regular trips to the library introduce children to new books, authors, and genres and instil a sense of community.

BOOK WEEK 2025: BOOK AN ADVENTURE

The theme for Children’s Book Week 2025 is ‘Book an Adventure’, a celebration of how books can transport readers to extraordinary places. Books invite children to embark on adventures from the comfort of their favourite reading spot, whether it’s an imaginary land of talking animals or the ocean’s depths.

This year’s theme is an opportunity for parents and educators to spark excitement about reading. Activities like dressing up as favourite book characters, treasure hunts based on story clues, and creating adventure maps inspired by books can make reading feel like an exciting journey.

Books are more than just stories; they are tools for growth, understanding, and connection. They open the door to endless possibilities, teaching children to dream big, empathise with others, and embrace the joys of discovery. As parents, instilling a love of reading in our children isn’t just a gift for today—it’s an investment in their future. So why not start tonight? Pick up a book, settle in for storytime, and watch the magic unfold!

Sunshine Coast school readiness program launching little learners

n Moffat Beach, Sunshine Coast, Appleberry Co School

Readiness is making waves as a home-based business dedicated to school readiness. Run by Michelle Cavalier, a passionate teacher with over 20 years of experience, this small but mighty program offers group sessions for children aged 3 to 5. We sat down with Michelle to learn more about school readiness and preparing young learners for ‘big school’.

Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START APPLEBERRY CO SCHOOL READINESS?

MICHELLE: After 23 years in teaching, primarily with younger children, I wanted to create a space where I could focus on my passion for early education whilst also being present as a mum to my daughter. Watching children grow and develop confidence in their abilities is

incredibly rewarding, and I love being part of that journey.

Q: WHAT SETS APPLEBERRY CO SCHOOL READINESS APART FROM OTHER EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS?

MICHELLE: The key difference is our small group sizes—just five children per session. This

allows me to provide personalised attention, which isn’t always possible in larger kindergarten settings. Our sessions focus on pre-reading skills, such as letter sounds, alphabet recognition, phonological awareness, and prewriting skills, such as fine motor development and letter formation.

We also emphasise oral language, encouraging children to recount events, describe objects,

and even give mini-presentations. Basic numeracy, including number recognition and counting, is another cornerstone of the program.

Another key part of the program is our focus on resilience, confidence, and emotional regulation. Each session starts with a check-in on feelings, using the Zones of Regulation framework to help children understand and manage their emotions.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO STRUCTURING SESSIONS?

MICHELLE: Routine is critical for young children. My sessions follow the same structure every week so that children know what to expect and feel secure. While we incorporate play and breaks, the focus is on structured learning, preparing kids for the expectations of a school environment.

Q: WHAT AGE GROUP DO YOU CATER TO?

MICHELLE: We welcome children aged 3.5 to 5 years, focusing on the year before they start prep. It’s ideal if a child can attend for a full year to experience the complete program, though we also offer term-byterm enrollment.

Q: DO YOU OFFER ANY HOLIDAY PROGRAMS?

MICHELLE: Yes! During the summer break, I offer a threeweek refresher course designed to reinforce what children have learned and get them back into learning mode before school starts.

A FREE SESSION AT APPLEBERRY CO SCHOOL READINESS!

Kids on the Coast readers can get a FREE LESSON with Appleberry Co School Readiness. Simply email Michelle at appleberryco@yahoo.com and mention KIDS ON THE COAST for your free session!

Appleberry Co School Readiness is located in Moffat Beach and offers sessions Monday to Friday, 9–11 am or 12–2 pm. For parents seeking a nurturing, skill-focused environment for their preschoolers, Appleberry Co School Readiness provides the perfect start to their learning journey. Enrollments are now open for 2025.

Liftoff for LEARNING QUEST

Pacific Lutheran College launches exciting new Pacific Quest Program for Middle College students

Pacific Lutheran College is proud to launch its innovative Pacific Quest Program, designed to engage Year 6 and 7 students in two specialised learning areas: ArtsQuest and TechQuest. This new initiative provides a unique opportunity for students to ignite their creativity, independence, and confidence while embodying the College’s core educational philosophy, which is based on the Four Pillars of Learning: Learning to Be, Learning Together, Learning to Learn, and Learning to Know and Do.

Mrs Jo Belchamber, Head of Middle College Learning, shares, “This forward-thinking program is designed to foster creativity, independence and confidence, empowering our students with the skills needed to navigate an ever-changing world.”

At the heart of the Pacific Quest Program is problem-based, experiential learning, where students work as responsible, capable global citizens to solve realworld challenges. This approach reflects Pacific Lutheran College’s commitment to preparing students for a bright future by

blending academic inquiry with creative and collaborative problem-solving.

ARTSQUEST: EXPRESS, CREATE, INSPIRE

ArtsQuest offers Year 7 students an exciting opportunity to explore Drama, Dance, Visual Arts and Media Arts through a collaborative, creative approach. Students have begun reflecting on the question, "How can we celebrate community or family stories through visual presentations?"

“It's been so fun bringing my family’s stories to life through creative expression. I loved seeing how our ideas could be shared in different ways, like dance, art and even media,” said a Pacific Year 7 student.

Throughout the program, students rotate through the Arts disciplines to explore the power of storytelling in various forms. They have been investigating how creativity can give new life to cultural stories, connecting to heritage while reimagining those narratives for today’s audience. Students are focusing on connecting with their audience and respecting the original meaning of the stories.

“This program is so special because it allows us to celebrate where we come from and share that with others in a way that connects with them,” shared another Pacific Year 7 student.

The collaboration between specialist teachers in Drama, Dance, Visual Arts and Media Arts has been instrumental in guiding students. Miss Elise Black, Head of Visual

Arts, highlights, “The collaboration between our teaching staff has been key in bringing a cohesive, interdisciplinary approach to students’ learning. By blending art, design and performance, we’re enabling them to explore how creativity can be used to communicate deep cultural and personal meanings.”

TECHQUEST: DESIGN, INNOVATE, THRIVE

In TechQuest, Year 6 and 7 students have been exploring the challenges faced by Pacific Island communities. Students were introduced to the inquiry questions, “How might we use technologies to design a preferred future for an island community?” (Year 6) and “How might we use data to re-design a preferred future for an island community?” (Year 7).

Year 6 and Year 7 students embarked on a fascinating journey to explore the complexities of Pacific Island communities. Through a combination of engaging activities, students have been introduced to the unique problems facing island inhabitants. A highlight was a scale model of Pacific Island and a Minecraft replica of the island, providing students with an interactive and immersive way to learn about these challenges. The Digital Technologies teaching team have created 20 non-player characters (NPCs), each offering insights into the issues faced by the community. These NPCs are designed to bring the problems to life, encouraging students to think critically and explore how technology might offer solutions.

“It’s going to be amazing to use Minecraft

to view the virtual version of the island and then figure out how we can use technology to solve problems,” shared a Pacific Year 6 student.

Through hands-on activities, students have been exploring the application of coding, systems thinking and design thinking. Throughout the semester students will be learning to apply data analysis and technology to address the real-world challenges faced by island communities, like sustainable engineering principles, food and fibre use and resource management.

Mrs Marnie Whittaker, Middle College Design and Visual Arts Teacher explains, “This approach fosters creativity and resilience while helping students develop critical technical skills. We’re providing them with the tools to solve real-world problems, and it’s been incredible to see how engaged and motivated they are in finding solutions.”

on projects to demonstrate technologies knowledge and skills. Their designed solutions will be celebrated as a culminating showcase of student prototypes and designs.

CO-CREATING BETTER FUTURES

The success of the Pacific Quest Program is a testament to the professional collaboration between the Arts and Technologies teaching staff. Together, they are fostering an environment where creativity and problemsolving thrive, reflecting the College’s 2025 theme of “Co-creating Better Futures.”

Through explicit teaching, mentoring and the use of collaboration-focused activities, students are developing key skills in systems thinking, computational thinking, design thinking and collaboration. These skills are essential in preparing them for the future.

“The teaching teams in both the Arts and Technologies disciplines have demonstrated exceptional professionalism, blending their expertise with a passion for igniting creativity in students,” says Mrs Belchamber. “Their commitment to co-creating these learning experiences with students is truly inspiring and it reflects the collaborative spirit at the core of our College’s values.”

The program is already receiving glowing feedback from students, with many commenting on how excited they are to tackle real-world challenges and apply their creativity to solve them.

IT’S GOING TO BE AMAZING TO USE MINECRAFT TO VIEW THE VIRTUAL VERSION OF THE ISLAND AND THEN FIGURE OUT HOW WE CAN USE TECHNOLOGY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.

The collaborative efforts of the Digital Technologies and Design teams will provide students with an opportunity to approach complex problems in innovative ways, highlighting the importance of teamwork, collaboration and a shared vision for creating better futures. Students will collaborate

“I love how we get to work together in groups and come up with creative solutions to problems that matter,” said a Pacific Year 7 student. “Pacific Quest will give me the chance to use my creativity to make a difference.”

LOOKING AHEAD

The launch of the Pacific Quest Program marks the beginning of an exciting journey for our Middle College students. By blending the Arts and Technologies, students are developing essential skills in creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, all while preparing to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. As they continue to explore, create and innovate, students are not only shaping their futures but also contributing to cocreating better futures for others.

Out & About

The

Kindy building bright futures in Mooloolah Valley

Kindergarten is a transformative year, bridging the gap between early childhood and formal schooling. With so many options available, finding the right Kindy program and early learning service can feel overwhelming. At Out & About Care & Education in Mooloolah Valley, they’ve discovered the perfect formula for success. We took a closer look to see what sets them apart.

THE IMPORTANCE OF KINDERGARTEN FOR SCHOOL READINESS

Research shows that the first five years of a child’s life are crucial for brain development. Kindergarten is where children refine their social, emotional, and cognitive skills, all essential for a smooth transition to school.

“Kindergarten gives children a fantastic start, and it’s not just about academics. They develop crucial social skills like sharing, turn-taking, and group work. These skills help them confidently navigate the school environment,”

says Kim Newton, a seasoned Early Childhood Teacher at Out & About Mooloolah Valley.

Beyond social skills, Kindy fosters independence, language development, and motor skills. Children learn to manage their belongings, dress themselves, and engage in meaningful conversations. “This holistic development ensures they are ready not just for prep but for life,” Kim adds.

NOT ALL KINDYS ARE EQUAL

When choosing a Kindergarten, it’s essential to look beyond the surface. A key factor is having a qualified teacher in the room. For example, at Out & About, the Kindergarten room is always staffed with an experienced Early

Kindergarten gives children a fantastic start, and it’s not just about academics. They develop crucial social skills like sharing, turn-taking, and group work. Kim Newton

Childhood Teacher (ECT), ensuring consistent, high-quality education.

“Having a trained teacher in the room supports individual learning and helps identify any potential areas of concern,” says Brooke Gardiner, the lead ECT at Out & About Mooloolah Valley. “We’re specifically trained in the developmental needs of children during these critical years. This expertise allows us to create engaging, playbased programs tailored to each child.”

Consistency is another hallmark of quality. At Out & About, the Kindy room teaching is shared between two incredibly experienced and passionate teachers. Kim brings over 40 years of experience in early childhood teaching to the classroom, and Brooke has over 12 years. This dynamic ensures stability and continuity, which are crucial for young learners. “We’re a team,” Kim shares. “My experience pairs well with Brooke’s fresh perspective and energy, creating a balanced approach that benefits children and families.”

With educators like Brooke and Kim at the helm, children benefit from a blend of experience and innovation. “We love the magic of childhood and strive to make every day meaningful for the children,” Brooke shares. Out & About also values community connections. Brooke highlights the unique experiences at Mooloolah Valley: “We’ve

formed positive relationships with local schools, which supports smooth transitions for the children. Community excursions, like a recent fire truck visit, enrich our program and make learning exciting.”

A KINDY AND A LONG DAYCARE SERVICE

When choosing a Kindergarten, it’s important to consider whether it offers care outside of standard school hours. Traditional Kindergartens often operate only during school hours and terms, which can be challenging for working parents. A Kindergarten integrated with a long daycare service can provide the perfect solution.

“We are both a Kindergarten and a long day care service, so families can choose their hours and days, knowing their children will always be cared for and educated in a quality environment,” explains Pam Maclean, operator of Out & About. This setup also ensures a seamless

experience as children grow. “Children can enrol as babies and continue to Kindy without transitioning to another service. Siblings can stay together, offering added convenience for families,” Pam adds.

HOW THE GOVERNMENT FREE KINDY PROGRAM WORKS

To make Kindergarten more accessible, the Queensland Government offers a free Kindy program. “The funding applies to children who turn four by June 30 of the current year. It covers 15 hours of free Kindergarten each week, typically spread over two days, explains Pam.”

For families needing care on top of those 15 hours, Out & About

Having a trained teacher in the room supports individual learning and helps identify any potential areas of concern. Brooke Gardiner

offers “wrap-around hours” at a reasonable cost, which can be further reduced using the Child Care Subsidy. “This combination of free hours and subsidies makes Kindy much more affordable,” Pam notes. Moreover, the government’s 10% wage increase for educators has been subsidised, ensuring it doesn’t lead to fee hikes. “We’re committed to keeping our fees manageable,” Pam says. “This year, our fees increased by only $3 a day, far less than the industry average. Our values-driven approach prioritises families over profits.”

QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS UNITE TO DRIVE STEM INNOVATION

Suncoast Christian College (SCC) and Heights College have formed an exciting new partnership to enhance the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education of hundreds of Queensland students.

The collaboration was formalised during a recent visit by Heights College representatives to SCC’s newly opened Primary Precinct. The schools aim to promote educational innovation through resource sharing and joint curriculum development.

A key feature of the initiative is sharing advanced STEM technologies, including EV3 robots, Sphero SPRK+, and Edison V2 devices. These cutting-edge tools, which are often expensive for individual schools to acquire, can now be borrowed by Heights College,

allowing its students to experiment and learn without significant financial investment.

Adam King, SCC’s Head of Emerging Technologies, emphasised the importance of collaboration in keeping pace with the rapidly evolving STEM landscape. “By sharing resources and curriculum insights, we’re creating opportunities for mutual learning and technological advancement,” King explained.

Beyond technology sharing, the partnership extends to joint curriculum planning and documentation, enabling Heights College to develop a tailored STEM program to meet the specific needs of its students.

“We’re creating a practical, sustainable model that supports educational innovation,” King said.

The meeting between the two schools took place in SCC’s innovative Primary Precinct, designed by m3architecture. The awardwinning facility recently received recognition as a joint category winner at the 2024 Learning Environments Queensland Chapter Awards for its forward-thinking design.

The space supports SCC’s collaborative teaching model with flexible, open-plan learning areas, natural light, and specialised creative hubs such as maker spaces. The design encourages teamwork, hands-on learning, and adaptability in the classroom.

Acting Deputy Head of Suncoast Primary,

Liana Simpson, highlighted the benefits of sharing resources and knowledge. “These technologies are most valuable when actively used, driving innovation across our educational community,” Simpson said.

Both schools see the partnership as an opportunity to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers by creating enriched learning environments and fostering meaningful collaboration.

Suncoast Christian College, a Prep to Year 12 co-educational Christian school located in Woombye on the Sunshine Coast, has been serving families since 1979. With a strong focus on community and academic excellence, the school is dedicated to nurturing each child’s unique educational journey. Through initiatives like this STEM partnership, Suncoast Christian College continues to demonstrate its commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

This forward-thinking collaboration between SCC and Heights College highlights how resource sharing and teamwork can drive educational advancements and prepare students for a future in which innovation is key.

Set sail adventurefor MARITIME MUSEUM AT QUEENSLAND

For families seeking an exciting and educational day out, the Queensland Maritime Museum (QMM) in Brisbane is a must-visit destination. As one of Australia’s largest maritime museums, it showcases an impressive collection of historic vessels, interactive exhibits, and engaging stories that immerse visitors in a world of nautical adventures. Children particularly enjoy exploring the museum’s major exhibits, including the warship Diamantina and the pearling lugger ‘Penguin’.

STEP ABOARD HISTORY ON THE HMAS DIAMANTINA

One of the museum’s highlights is the HMAS

Diamantina, a Royal Australian Navy frigate built in Queensland and commissioned in 1945. Recognised as an iconic Queensland vessel, this World War II River Class frigate is among the world’s last remaining ships of its kind.

Visitors can explore the ship from bow to stern, walking through the bridge, the mess halls, and even the cramped crew quarters where sailors ate and slept. A fascinating variety of exhibitions onboard showcases the Diamantina’s role in naval history, including its part in the Japanese surrender of Nauru Island and Ocean Island at the end of World War II. The engine room remains in pristine condition and is open to visitors, while the radio room

is still operational and actively participates in global radio communication activities.

According to Mike Sobyra, Administration Manager and volunteer at QMM, the highlight of the Diamantina experience is the interactive gun turrets. “It’s a big ship, and they get to play with the guns, which actually move up and down and turn around. My grandchildren love coming here just for that!”

THE PEARLING LUGGER ‘PENGUIN’

Another noteable exhibit is the ‘Penguin’, a pearling lugger built in 1907. This vessel is one of the last surviving examples of a working Torres Strait pearling boat, offering a glimpse into an industry that played a crucial role in

Ella’s Pink Lady was the yacht that Jessica Watson sailed around the world in 2009–2010

Australia’s economic and cultural history. Currently undergoing restoration, the Penguin is a fascinating link to the past, and museum volunteers are often on hand to share insights about its history and significance.

MORE TO EXPLORE

Beyond the historic ships, the Queensland Maritime Museum offers a variety of fascinating exhibits for kids. One particularly popular exhibit is a replica cabin of the one used by sailor Jessica Watson during her record-breaking solo circumnavigation of the globe. “We have a replica cabin that kids can go in and experience,” says Mike. “It’s even mounted on springs, so parents can rock

it while the kids are inside, simulating the movement of the boat!”

The museum is also home to the heritagelisted South Brisbane Dry Dock. Kids interested in engineering and mechanics will be intrigued by these large-scale industrial artifacts.

As well as large machinery, the Museum has a fascinating collection of nautical equipment that represents the disciplines of navigation, surveying, meteorology, engineering, cargo handling, aids to navigation, oceanography, seamanship, diving, fishing, whaling, ship and boat building tools, and warfare.

Another major exhibit focuses on Brisbane’s role in World War II. In 1943, the U.S. 7th Fleet was established in Brisbane, and the museum commemorates this with an extensive display featuring artifacts, photographs, and personal stories from that time. “In 2023, we opened a new exhibit detailing the American presence in Brisbane during World War II,” Mike explains. “It’s a big draw for history buffs and families alike.”

SPECIAL EXHIBITS AT QMM

In addition to permanent displays, the museum regularly hosts special exhibitions. One upcoming highlight is Making Waves, a celebration of Australians who have achieved extraordinary maritime feats. This exhibit will feature stories of Jessica Watson, Australian adventurers who rowed across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and a sailor who

circumnavigated Australia.

“We’re proud to showcase Jessica’s achievements alongside other inspiring Australian mariners,” says Mike.

A MUSEUM RUN BY PASSIONATE VOLUNTEERS

One of the most inspiring aspects of the Queensland Maritime Museum is the dedication of its volunteers. The museum has been operational for over 50 years, and many of its volunteers have decades of experience.

“We have a volunteer here who was a sailmaker for the Olympics in Mexico City,” Mike shares. “He’s in his early nineties now and still making sails!” The passion and knowledge of these volunteers make every visit to the museum a truly special experience.

WHY VISIT?

Whether your child dreams of becoming a sailor, loves interactive play, or enjoys exploring massive ships, the Queensland Maritime Museum offers something for everyone. With its unique combination of history, hands-on exhibits, and knowledgeable volunteers, this museum is a perfect destination for a fun and educational family outing. So, next time you’re in the city, set sail for adventure at the Queensland Maritime Museum—you won’t be disappointed!

MARITIMEMUSEUM.COM.AU

Opening times: Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:15 PM. Last entry at 3:15 PM. Admission Prices: Adults: $18 / Children (under 15): $8 / Family (2 adults and up to 3 children): $42-$50 / Pensioners, Seniors, and Students (with valid ID): $15

School groups are welcome to visit as part of an educational excursion, and families can enjoy a picnic in the designated area overlooking the Brisbane River. There is also no cafe inside, but they do sell cold drinks at the shop.

Visitors should allow two to three hours to explore the museum fully. While the museum offers plenty of shade, the main building is not air-conditioned, so bringing water is recommended, especially in summer.

Play Create Heal

How

play and creative therapy can transform little

lives

Play is often considered “just fun,” but for children, it’s much more—it’s their natural way of exploring, learning, and expressing themselves. Coupled with creative therapies like art, play becomes a powerful tool for emotional healing and behavioural change. According to behavioural therapist Kasia Palko, these therapeutic approaches tap into a child’s innate creativity and playfulness, helping them navigate challenges like anxiety, learning difficulties, or family changes in a safe and non-threatening way.

THE POWER OF PLAY-BASED THERAPY

“Play is the language of children,” says Kasia Palko, whose background

in behavioural wellbeing and holistic development drives her therapy work with kids. Through play, children can communicate their thoughts, fears, and feelings in ways they may not yet be able to articulate verbally.

In play-based therapy, everyday toys and games are transformed into tools for expression. For instance, role-playing with dolls or figurines can help a child process difficult emotions or reenact situations they find challenging. This indirect exploration allows children to work through issues at their own pace, fostering resilience and problem-solving skills.

Kasia explains that observing a child’s behaviour during play can reveal a lot about their inner world. “I watch how they work, how they paint, how they

interact with their carers and parents,” she says. These observations provide crucial insights into a child’s emotional state and developmental needs, enabling therapists to tailor interventions effectively.

THE ROLE OF CREATIVE THERAPY

Art, like play, is a universal language for children. Painting, drawing, or crafting provides a tangible way for kids to express feelings they may struggle to put into words. Creative therapy is particularly beneficial for children experiencing trauma, anxiety, or behavioural challenges.

Kasia’s approach is both intuitive and holistic. “In my therapy sessions, I use toys and art resources in a very non-intrusive, calm environment,” she explains. This gentle, supportive setting allows children to feel safe and understood, which is crucial for fostering trust and engagement.

The act of creating art itself can be therapeutic. For example, a child painting a picture might unknowingly depict their worries or joys, giving therapists and parents valuable clues about their emotional well-being. Moreover, the creative process can build self-esteem, as children feel proud of what they’ve made and confidence as they learn new skills.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH

What sets Kasia’s practice apart is her commitment to a holistic view of the child. She considers factors like movement, diet, lifestyle, and family history. “Sometimes behavioural problems can be signs of posttraumatic stress disorder or depression,” she notes. By addressing these underlying causes, Kasia helps children and their families find long-term solutions.

Collaboration is key to her success. “I work with the child, the parents, the family, the preschool teacher, and even the doctor,” Kasia says. This team approach ensures that every aspect of a child’s environment supports their healing and development.

WHY IT WORKS SO WELL

At its core, play-based and creative therapy works because it meets children where they are. By embracing their natural modes of expression and communication, therapists like Kasia Palko empower kids to process emotions, build resilience, and restore confidence—all while having fun. For parents, it’s a gentle reminder that play isn’t just a pastime; it’s a pathway to growth and healing.

FOOTBALL

A GAME FOR LIFE

As the most played sport in Australia, football (soccer) offers children an inclusive and accessible way to stay active and develop essential life skills. With programs available for kids as young as 18 months old, football is a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime, from playful kickarounds at the park to elite-level competitions. While football provides excellent physical

exercise, its benefits extend beyond fitness. Alex Ollier from Little Kickers Sunshine Coast highlights the invaluable emotional and social lessons kids can gain. “No matter how skilled you are, at some point you will lose when playing football. Learning how to deal with and overcome setbacks is an important skill. This also shows a child the value of learning from their mistakes,” Alex explains.

Football also teaches teamwork and cooperation. “Coaches will also teach respect, teamwork, and patience, so playing in a group will increase their social awareness,” says Alex. “Because they are part of a group that motivates and supports each other, they also learn empathy for others and learn to care about the well-being of their peers.”

Little Kickers offers four tailored classes designed to engage children from 18 months to 7 years of age:

• Little Kicks (18 months to 2 ½ years): Fun, play-oriented sessions involving parent participation.

• Junior Kickers (2 ½ to 3 ½ years): Builds foundational skills with independent participation.

• Mighty Kickers (3 ½ to 5 years): Fastpaced games focusing on teamwork and football skills.

• Mega Kickers (5 to 8 years): Advanced sessions culminating in real football matches.

“It’s a perfect way to get kids interested in a sport and being active,” says Alex. “They don’t realise they are learning because they are having so much fun!”

By introducing children to football in a positive, pressure-free environment, a lifelong love for the game begins.

Sessions are held weekly at Buderim, Caloundra, Chancellor Park, Mountain Creek, and Talara. Want Little Kickers in your area? Email sunshinecoast@littlekickers.com.au to suggest the next location! littlekickers.com.au

Acrobatics is an all-weather activity that appeals to both boys and girls, serving as a workout in disguise. It allows kids to jump, tumble, and balance while building core strength, flexibility, and coordination. Whether navigating balance beams or mastering backflips, children improve their

balance, spatial awareness, and body control. These physical benefits set the foundation for other sports and activities, making acrobatics an excellent complement to a wellrounded childhood.

But the benefits extend beyond the physical. Acrobatics challenges kids to push their boundaries and conquer their fears, fostering resilience and self-confidence. Every new skill they master marks a step forward in their personal growth. The thrill of accomplishment and the joy of small victories offer invaluable life lessons about perseverance, dedication, and the rewards of hard work. This resilience extends beyond the gym, helping kids tackle challenges in school and social situations more confidently.

The social aspects of acrobatics are equally significant. In a supportive environment, kids learn teamwork, trust, and collaboration. Classes encourage kids to cheer each other on, celebrate successes, and work together to achieve group goals. This camaraderie fosters friendships and develops social skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Being part of a team also teaches kids the importance of mutual respect and how to navigate different personalities, laying the groundwork for strong interpersonal relationships in the future.

RAISING

Water Babies

We all know that learning to swim is important. But how do you teach that intrinsic connection to water? We chat with Nathan

Grieg, surf lifesaver and swim coach from Alite Edvantage, to find out.

Living in southeast Queensland, our kids have a unique relationship with the water. From weekend surfing trips to fishing on the river, the water is a part of our lifestyle. Knowing how to swim safely in a variety of aquatic environments is not just a recreational skill; it’s a necessity.

While swimming pools provide a controlled environment to learn basic swimming skills, the ocean offers a vastly different experience. Waves, currents, and marine life can pose potential dangers if not understood and respected.

Alite Edvantage Swim School understands the importance of connecting pool swimming with ocean safety. Founded by Nathan Grieg, a lifelong swimmer and lifeguard and coach, the Mountain Creek swim school offers a unique approach that prepares children for the challenges of coastal living.

Nathan explains the importance of building fundamental swimming skills early. “Consistent swimming lessons focus on the small building blocks that become second nature,” he says. “We emphasise

individual progress to scaffold the building blocks that develop confident swimmers.” says Nathan. “These building blocks help children stay calm and confident in the water, increasing their enjoyment in the aquatic environment.”

EMBEDDING FOUNDATIONS EARLY

Getting these basic skills embedded early can make all the difference, which is why Alite Edvantage offers free lessons for babies ages three to six months to get kids into the pool as young as possible. An example is instinctively knowing how to breathe correctly. “Imagine a child jumping under a wave and holding their breath, and as they surface, they breathe out and then in quickly. The child feels a little out of breath; they may swallow water which can cause fear or panic,” says Nathan. “Early swimming lessons can teach children to control breathing out under the water so when they surface, they are calmer and breathe air in at the right time.”

Connecting the pool to the ocean is what sets Alite Edvantage apart. The school's instructors have extensive experience

in ocean and competitive swimming, providing a real-world perspective on water safety. This knowledge is incorporated into the lessons, helping children understand the unique challenges and opportunities that the ocean presents.

“Teachers can see what fundamentals individuals are missing and can adjust lessons accordingly. It is easier to adjust swimmers and focus on getting the fundamentals correct when they are young,” says Nathan.

Kids learn about rip currents, wave patterns, and marine hazards, equipping them with the tools to make informed decisions and stay safe in the ocean.

“As Queenslanders, we have a unique opportunity to raise water-savvy kids. By teaching kids these critical skills of understanding the water, reading the ocean, and being in the water being second nature, we're equipping children with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in coastal environments. This not only ensures their safety but also opens up a world of possibilities for exploration and adventure.”

THE FARM STAY THE WHOLE FAMILY will love

Nestled just 10 minutes from Maleny, Wittacork Dairy Cottages provides an unforgettable farm stay experience for families. This working dairy farm covers an impressive 700 acres, featuring over 150 acres of pristine rainforest and stunning views of Lake Baroon and Kondalilla National Park. The property’s unique mix of modern comforts and hands-on farm activities makes it an ideal destination for families looking to reconnect with nature, learn about farm life, and create lasting memories.

Guests are welcomed into one of four self-contained cottages, each thoughtfully designed for families. The cottages are equipped with fully functional kitchens, wood heaters for cosy nights, and babyfriendly essentials like cots, bed rails, and high chairs—all free of charge. For added safety, each cottage features gated verandahs, offering peace of mind for

parents with little ones. A shared laundry and playground enhance convenience, ensuring a hassle-free stay.

One of Wittacork’s standout features is the immersive farm experience included in every stay. Families can participate in animal feeding sessions twice daily, where kids can feed goats, pigs, and bottle-feed calves. Collecting fresh eggs from the chicken coop adds an extra layer of excitement. During their visit, each child is also treated to a guided pony ride, so remember to pack your child’s bike helmet for safety.

For those curious about the workings of a dairy farm, Wittacork’s owners offer engaging tours of the dairy. They offer a behind-the-scenes look at milking operations and answer questions about farm life. A highlight for many is riding in the farm’s sixwheeled “gator” buggy, which takes families on scenic adventures around the property.

Beyond the farmyard, guests can explore

5.5 kilometres of walking trails that wind through rainforests, creeks, and waterfalls. Whether enjoying a leisurely stroll or embarking on a more challenging hike, the natural beauty of the surroundings never fails to impress. For day trips, Wittacork’s location is ideal—close to popular attractions like Australia Zoo, Maleny Botanic Gardens, and local eateries in Kenilworth and Montville.

Although there is no Wi-Fi, the property boasts excellent mobile reception. Many families embrace this opportunity to disconnect and spend time together finding their own fun in nature.

Wittacork Dairy Cottages offers a charming farm experience that families can enjoy time and time again. Children can engage with farm life, learning something new with each visit, from feeding animals to exploring the outdoors. After a day on the farm, relaxing by the wood heater in a truly idyllic setting adds a magical touch to every stay.
