My sister has been giving me a hard time. She’s always putting me down and making fun of me in front of my friends. It makes me so sad. What can I do? Sad Shama Dear Shama,

Part of having siblings is dealing with sibling rivalry. Have you ever sat down with your sister and told her how it makes you feel? If she doesn’t stop, tell your parents. If they step in and put firm rules down then I’m sure she’ll think twice before doing it again. Treat her how you want to be treated and eventually she may start acting the same way. The best way to see change is to be the change. Dear Ryan, Dear Kidz.Blog! I want to be a journalist. Where do I start? Reporter Ryan

Baking with ASD Mom,

Samah Kabbani A

s I ring the doorbell, I immediately sense the beautiful aroma of cinnamon and baked pumpkins. When walking up to the residence of the Kabbani villa, it’s not uncommon to smell something delicious being baked up in the kitchen.

Samah’s rule for success:

“There’s nothing in life called failure. I believe in something called trying and staying persistent in reaching our goals.”

The none other than Samah Kabbani greets me with a warm smile and hug and invites me in. She is a food blogger turned caterer of a company called Jasmine & Vanilla. Samah has had a passion for baking since her childhood, her favorite homemade sweet being sponge cake. We walk to the garden to have a chat and of course, there waiting for me were freshly baked banana bread, pumpkin muffins and chocolate chip cookies. Did I mention they were sugar and wheat free? Yes! Jasmine & Vanilla strives on making delicious foods in a healthier way without compromising the taste. As Samah talks about her passion for baking and cooking I couldn’t help but ask what motivated her to start Jasmine & Vanilla. Her answer was heartfelt, saying that it all started with the love and care she has for her family and wanting to establish healthy eating habits for them. It gives her continuous pleasure promoting health awareness for others. To contact Jasmine & Vanilla please email Samahkabbani@gmail.com

Samah’s healthy alternatives when baking Sugar: Say good-bye to refined sugar and start using other healthier alternatives such as: coconut sugar, date sugar, maple syrup, molasses syrup, and even honey! Cows milk: If you are lactose intolerant or you prefer to be on a dairy-free diet, you can switch to almond milk when baking your favorite cakes. Butter and oil: You can simply use coconut oil or coconut butter when baking, however, make sure you get the kind that doesn’t have a strong coconut taste to avoid unwanted flavor in your cakes. Wheat: Do you prefer to go on a gluten-free diet or refined wheat-free diet? There are many amazing options available in the market now. For a 100% gluten-free diet, opt for almond flour, rice flour, coconut flour, or other gluten-free flour choices. If you are on a refined wheat-free diet, go for spelt flour. It works amazingly in cakes and has a great taste! Nuts and spices: Always try to add some nuttiness & spices to your bakes! They have incredible benefits to our health and they add a lot of flavor while providing a feeling of fullness. 18

A Call to Action

pictures with them, practiced ordering food with them at a restaurant, and would resort to any method that would encourage a child to use communication skills.

By Jamie Menhall

I am a tenth grader from Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Five years ago, during a casual dinner conversation, my father announced that he had decided to start several autism centers in the Middle East. I was only a young child at the time and had no idea what autism meant. But I can still remember the shocked expressions on my family members’ faces and the barrage of questions that ensued. In the bluster, I quietly told myself that I would learn as much as I could about this condition. The journey began with watching several autism-related movies with my father. I especially loved Rain Man and the story of Dr. Temple Grandin. Admittedly, watching these films invoked a range of emotions for me: I sometimes felt sorry for the characters in the movies, as they were often misunderstood and mishandled, but I also had the sense that I should not really feel sorry for them. It was immediately clear to me that autism does not always mean diminished intellectual capacity, as both the fictional Rain Man and the real Dr. Grandin have extraordinary talents that were not obvious when they

22

were young. My opportunity to learn more about autism came when I decided to volunteer for a peer support group for children with autism at a local special education center. There, I had my first hands-on experience with children on the spectrum. The chief psychologist in charge informed me that although their students would not have a lack of intellect, they might have extreme difficulty with basic social and communication skills. I was paired with a teenage boy two years older than me, and my task was to engage him in as much conversation as possible. This sounded simple enough, but I soon found that in reality it was extremely difficult. When I introduced myself, he was very uncomfortable: I was a stranger, and he did not like interacting with strangers. It took me a while to realize that he actually had a very nice personality but this was hard to uncover since he was unable to perceive social cues. He had no filter and would say things that are socially inappropriate and he would not be able to sense that he might be offending people. Often he appeared tense and uptight, but this was usually because he was uncomfortable in settings where he had to interact with people he didn’t know.

Jamie is the son of the CEO of Stepping Stones; a research center that offers treatment for individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Thus I knew that to connect with him, I had to transform myself from a stranger to a trusted friend. I figured out that he liked mini chocolate chip cupcakes with coconut buttercream frosting. I began to bring precisely six mini chocolate chip cupcakes with coconut buttercream frosting to our sessions. He had a distinct preference for having three mini cupcakes, with one square napkin per cupcake. Sharing food became a bonding experience. I can recall definite cupcake moments where he tried to thank me for my efforts. The fleeting eye contact and joy on his face was subtle but priceless, and eventually our monosyllabic conversations evolved into simple phrases. As we got to know each other better, he tried harder to communicate but continued to have little control over his own actions. The need to understand autism is only becoming more and more important as rates of autism rise. Today, ASD is diagnosed in

approximately 1 in 68 children, a 30% increase from 1 in 88 two years ago according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This compares with about 1 in 200 children in the year 2000. Scientists predict that by the year 2030, 1 in every 15 children will be autistic, approximately 1 in 10 boys and 1 in 21 girls. Diagnosis and treatment from an early age can greatly ease the symptoms, but currently there is no cure.

At the center, I was able to see the full spectrum of autism, from lowfunctioning to highfunctioning (or Asperger). Low-functioning kids had very few communication skills and were very difficult to help. On the other hand, I saw that highfunctioning children, with early intervention, could one day fit into traditional social environments. The vast majority of autistic children were somewhere in between. Through my experiences at autism centers working with children, I see a future world where 7% of the

population will be limited in key aspects of life. The understanding I was able to develop for children on the ASD spectrum I take to be a great gift, and I believe that awareness, empathy, and understanding are vital as we learn more about autism. But scientific research is just as important, as the causes of autism are still a mystery. Without knowing the causes, scientists cannot find a cure, nor can they determine how best to prevent autism. There is much research to be done. If a fifteen year old kid from Boston can connect with autistic children and make a difference, then everybody needs to believe that with empathy and generosity, they, too, can make a difference. If we succeed in finding the cause and cure for ASD, that would be the greatest gift to the world’s children and future generations.

Over winter break, I visited my father’s autism center in Dubai with the hope that I learn about the formal training undertaken by therapists working with autistic children. When I walked into the main room, I was virtually invisible. The group of small children made no motion or gesture towards me whatsoever even when I tried everything imaginable to get their attention. As before, I had to have patience and had to work to gain their confidence. In one-on-one sessions, I could make them feel comfortable and cajole them to make phrases and communicate. I played games with them, drew

2. The British Library

An Ocean Of Books! Meet Six Of The World’s Largest Libraries ‘If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.’ These were words by which, Marcus Tullius Cicero, the great Roman philosopher and orator described the importance of libraries. A library in the modern sense is an entity, which provides physical or digital access to a collection of sources of information for the public or members of an institution. The origins of libraries can be traced back to antiquity.

1. The Library of Congress The Library of Congress, situated on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C, U.S.A, is the national library of the United States and is a research library that officially serves the United States Congress. With over 160 million catalogued items, The Library of Congress is considered as the largest library in the world. The Library of Congress was established on April 24, 1800. 2. The British Library

24

Humans started to collect and archive their accumulated knowledge for both safekeeping and further reference as far back as the early stages of their development.

500 BC we can find evidences for the existence of libraries that utilized an early form of library classification systems for better organization of collected material. The classical civilization that followed took these archival processes of information into a more refined form, which led to the evolution of great libraries.

The early forms of libraries, which date back to a time period even earlier than 2500 BC, catalogued records of commercial and administrative transactions on Let’s take a look at six of clay tablets. These archives soon the modern world’s largest evolved into great treasures of libraries: accumulated knowledge and by

‘London has fine museums, the British Library is one of the greatest library institutions in the world... It’s got everything you want, really.’- David Attenborough The British Library, a major research library, which catalogues about 170 million plus items, is the national library of the United Kingdom. Situated in London, this library has items in both digital and physical format and holds items like books, rare manuscripts, journals, newspapers, magazines, documents, maps etc. The historical collection in this library is pretty impressive with items dating back as far as 2000 BC. Established in 1753 as part of The British Museum, the British Library became an independent library on 1 July 1973. It is fascinating to know that the library adds some three million items every year occupying, which can account to about 9.6 km of new shelf space.

3. Library and Archives Canada The Library and Archives Canada, situated in Ottawa is a federal institution tasked with acquiring, preserving and making Canada’s documentary heritage accessible. In 2004, two separate institutions named ‘National Archives of Canada’ - originally formed in 1872 - and ‘The National Library of Canada’ - originally formed in 1953 were combined together to create the Library and Archives of Canada. This library has over 20 million books, 24 million photographs, and more than a petabyte of digital content within its collection.

4. The New York Public Library The New York Public Library, which was established in 1895, is a public library system in New York City. The library has about 53 million items, and is the second largest public library in the United States.

Addiction

Social Media 101 With Dr. Danah Barazanji As we already know, the Internet is a part of our every day life. From children to adults, we all use the Internet in one way or another at least once throughout the day. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social networking sites all have minimum age requirements however, many kids get around it by lying about the year in which they were born. Sometimes we often ask ourselves, are we being smart about what we put out there on social media sites? We spoke to a psychologist in the United States for some advice. Dr. Danah Barazanji, from the state of Iowa, is not only a licensed psychologist who deals with teens and adults but is also a mother of two. She has some advice for our Kidz.Blog! readers when it comes to social media. “I always tell teenagers that social media can be a great way to stay connected with your friends, express yourself and share your ideas, etc. BUT there are serious things you need to consider that don’t seem too obvious to kids or teens: Evaluate how social media is affecting your mood So many of my clients will notice how social media starts to increase anxiety or depression when they’re going through issues with friends, are grounded or going through something difficult with their family. We talk about how most people only post things that will portray that they are happy and leading perfect lives and this can be convincing and upsetting for others. I have often recommended to clients to come up with ways to limit their activity if they are identifying it as a trigger for anxiety/depression. Examples: turn your phone into your parents before bed, block certain people, deactivate accounts temporarily, etc. Teens ALWAYS report this helps if they actually follow through with it

26

Phones are addicting. Social media is addicting. If you find that you are spending hours in front of your phone instead of living your life, if you wake up and the first thing you do is grab your phone to get on social media, you may be addicted. This starts to limit the actual enjoyment and excitement you’re feeling in your real life out here. Again, if this is the case, I make the same recommendations as above (turn in phone, limit use, etc.).

Bullying

Nothing is private If you share a picture (or video, text, status post, tweet, etc.), you have little to no control if or how that information will leak into someone else’s hands. Always ask before yourself before you send something, “How would I feel if my parents, boss, or principle saw this?” I have seen several teens hurt by the violation of their perceived privacy. Also, remember every feeling or thought you have is temporary. However, if you post or send something in the heat of a moment, that can ultimately be permanent and/ or regrettable.

NEVER bully anyone via social media. The effects can be deadly. If you are being cyber bullied, immediately involve an adult who can then involve the school or law enforcement. If you see someone being bullied via social media, turn it in. Many children and teens have committed suicide due to cyber bullying.

Use social media for good Join groups and pages that align with your interests. If you love fashion, follow designers. If you are into art, follow the local art center, Sundance Film Festival, etc. If you’re into science, follow NASA or certain science museums (for example). Also, hunt down positive or empowering pages to “like”. The BULLY Project, for girls, I often recommend Miss Representation.”

They can often grow up to heights of 5.5 m and can weigh in excess of 1000 kilograms. A Fun Fact! A group of giraffes standing still is called a tower but a group of giraffes in motion is called a jenny.

Bird with the widest wingspan on our planet The wandering albatross, a nomadic seabird which has wings that measure over 3.5 m tip-to-tip, has the largest wingspan of any living bird. These large birds are also one of the most far ranging birds. Some individual wandering albatrosses are known to circumnavigate the Southern Ocean three times covering more than 120,000 km - in one year.

Do not compare yourself

Overcoming

LOW SELF ESTEEM By: Cinta Gibbins

Low self-esteem is when a person perceives his or herself as being unworthy, incompetent, inadequate and unlovable. Growing up, I must admit I didn’t love everything about myself. I didn’t like how I looked, how I talked and even how or where I lived. This was mainly because I took to heart negative comments of what people said about me. As a result, I became very shy and couldn’t even stand up for myself when bullied. But through this difficult period of my life, I learnt more about myself and how to be resilient. Today, I am proud to say that I am a confident young lady as I have learnt how to overcome my insecurities through these simple steps.

You are not alone First and foremost, know that you are not alone. There are many people going through the same issue. A recent research showed that 85% of the world’s population are affected by low self-esteem. What does that tell you? You don’t have to beat yourself up for how you feel. Many people across the world are going through the same thing. So the first step is to embrace who you are.

with others

myself to others. As As a kid, I often compared e my confidence. Do a result, this made me los Well that’s okay. Just you do that sometimes? a gift in itself. Can you know that being unique is in the world were the imagine if all the people rsonality, interests, and same? Same skin color, pe so do dull! That’s why talents? The world would be engineers, comedians, we have artists, scientists, and so on. They are all entrepreneurs, musicians good. So find where gifted differently and that’s st out of it. you stand and make the mo Appreciate the little things you have My teacher always said “Count your blessings one by one’’. This made me realize how fortunate I was. Appreciating the little things you have can create a big difference on how you view yourself. Little things like your health, your ability to read and write, your family and friends, your skills and talents and so forth. You will be surprised how this will change your perspective on who you are. So next time when a negative thought tries to bring you down, respond by counting all the things you are privileged to have, no matter how small they may be.

Get a journal Do not under estimate the power of having a journal. Writing down how you feel helps release tension. It is like talking to someone who understands you well. It gives you a sense of relief and helps you think clearly. Most musicians use their life experiences as inspiration to come up with songs and poets with poems. If you do not feel comfortable writing your thoughts down, then you can try painting, drawing, playing an instrument or whatever suits you best. The most important thing is that you let out all the negative energy (or stress) in you.

Know yourself Understanding who you are is basically getting to know your strengths, weaknesses, interests, talents and so on. This will enable you to make the most of yourself and hence boost your confidence. Also getting to know what your weaknesses are will help you not feel depressed when you fail in a particular area. As for me, I know I am not so good in sports, and that’s okay.

arents r theTOPBOOST FoWAYS SELF-ESTEEM Tips according to Dr. Candice Render, Educational Psychologist at the American Center for Psychiatry and Neurology on how parents can help boost their child’s self-esteem.

Quality time Spend quality time with your kids. Regardless of their age, do an activity together where you give full attention to them; this will make them feel important and hence improve their self-worth. Positive Image Always reflect a positive image of your child. Your opinion of them counts, and they always want to please you. Thus, make sure you are giving them positive reflections.

Give Responsibility When a child see’s that you trust them to do something, they begin to feel they are an important part of the family. For example, when a teen is helping with the dishes, he/she gets a sense of accomplishment when the job is finished. Being Part of a Team Children that are involved in sports or other team activities are less likely to experience low self-esteem because being part of a team gives the child a sense of belonging. It also helps them work together with others towards a common goal. Always encourage your child to express their feelings instead of hiding them. Make sure that your home is a safe zone where a child can say whatever they feel without fear of judgement.

15-year old launches mobile app game (Hungry Harry) to

combat malnutrition W

ith one-ninth of the world’s population suffering from malnutrition (according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization), Kunal Valrani spent a year building a mobile app game to raise awareness about the disease in an attempt to eradicate it globally. Dubai, UAE: After a year of research and development, Kunal Valrani (15) has launched his own free mobile app game, Hungry Harry, to address the issue of malnutrition and promote healthy eating.

that we face in society. The world’s malnutrition stats are alarming, hence I wanted to create my very own game targeting this disease – to raise awareness of this issue and promote a habit of healthy eating.” The objective of the game is to manoeuvre a character named Harry around the screen while collecting healthy foods and avoiding all the unhealthy ones. Before starting each level, all nutrition facts for each food type are displayed, providing the gamer with the required information to gather the ‘good’ and ignore the

‘bad’ foods. Gamers can even select from vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preferences. “I would like to continue using my skills to build apps and games that are for social good,” added Kunal. My next game might focus on agriculture as I’m currently exploring Hydroponics, which is the method of growing plants without soil.” The Hungry Harry app is available as a free download via Google Play Store on Android and Apple App Store on iOS.

A student at the American School of Dubai, Kunal spent 365 days coding, working with a nutritionist and enlisting advice from a website company to build an app that would make a difference in society. According to the World Food Programme (wfp.org) approximately 795 million people in the world suffer from malnutrition. UNICEF stats reveal that nearly half of all deaths in children under five are attributed to under nutrition - a form of malnutrition - which translates into nearly three million young lives lost each year. Kunal says, “Since a young age I’ve had an interest in Computer Science, Maths and Physics which formed the basis for my passion for engineering. I realised last year that engineering is more than just building ‘cool stuff’, but rather about using these key skills to address pressing issues 34

“The best way to cheer you up is to try to cheer someone else up,” Mark twain wrote that and he was right.

Increase Your

Own Happiness By Linda Chaccour

“Kindness is the language in which the deaf can hear and the blind can see” Mark Twain

Do you want to increase your own happiness? Then be kind! However, be kind with awareness… Most of us assume that when we practice kindness by saying and doing nice things to others, we are making them a favor, but here is the secret: acts of kindness light up your brain in the areas associated with pleasure and reward, consequently, oxytocin, the happy hormone is released in your body which causes your own happiness to soar. Research shows that random and conscious acts of kindness help deepen your relationships and build more positivity around you especially with your family, friends and at work… causing joy and happy emotions to become contagious.

you. I will not feel genuine and healthy and suppressing who you are will lead you to depression

So how can you be kind without really being taken advantage of, i.e. with awareness? Remember, We teach people how to trust us: If someone is taking advantage of your kindness then you must know that you are allowing them to do that. You have to take ownership of this and make sure you set boundaries, draw the lines and make others understand that being kind is not being weak. To say no, keep your responses simple and positive and make the choice to what is important to you. Identify toxic relationships in your life. Good relationships improve your

life; they just don’t make it messier. That you and your family come first, be kind but not on the expenses of your loved ones. They don’t have to bear the consequences of your decisions related to kindness. Kindness is a virtue, it is one of our core strengths, don’t suppress it because you thought you would be seen as weak, alive or less capable, just express it with awareness. Keep in mind that no matter how good you are to others, this doesn’t mean they will treat you the same. Better to release your expectations and be kind because you want to while teaching people how to treat you, because only relationships based on love and giving are the owes which remain.

Emerge.ae

It feels really good to be kind and to think and help someone else. What concern me here are the underlying expectations we often have when we give beyond ourselves. When people do not reciprocate or appreciate, then your expectations are not met and this could cause disappointment and stress and jeopardize your relationships. The mere act of giving is an act of love, and in my opinion the only expectation you need to have is the good feeling it will give you afterwards. When you realize that you are being taken advantage of and that some people are really taking your kindness for granted because you are being generous and the service of others, your immediate first response would be, let me guess, GET ANGRY! Get angry of yourself and of others, blaming, complaining and regretting being good and what follows is your decision to stop being kind, being generous and giving. But here is the thing, by doing that, you become someone else, and you stop being who you are which is even more painful to 46

It is one of the country’s longest standing, not-forprofit K-12 learning institutions and has become widely recognized for it’s leadership in the region’s education sector while supporting the progression, innovation, diversity, and growth of the United Arab Emirates over the last five decades. ASD was initially developed in September 1966, under the guidance of the first Ruler of Dubai and UAE Vice President, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. It was originally created by the Dubai Petroleum Company as a school for its expatriate staff from the United States. n October 29th, more than 800 children attended the birth of a new club designed to promote healthy eating and exercise among 6-12-year-olds in Dubai on Friday. The Al Islami Kids’ Club was launched at the Arabian Center in Al Mizhar by the 14-year-old chef Bella Pearson with cookery demonstrations, competitions and high-energy dance displays led by the Dans studio.

The initiative was created by Al Islami Foods, the Dubai-based halal food company, to help tackle the problems of obesity and diabetes among UAE residents. It follows a report from Dubai Health Authority in July showing that 33% of school children across 176 private schools are overweight, with 14% to 16% of those classed as obese. “Those are frightening figures, so we decided to do something to help the next generation take a different path,” said Mr Hamid Badawi, Deputy

Chief Executive Officer of Al Islami Foods. “Furthermore, 19% of the UAE population is living with diabetes, which is mostly related to rising obesity rates and physical inactivity. The Al Islami Kids’ Club is an attempt to halt that rise.” Chef Bella has been an ambassador for Al Islami Foods since she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes earlier this year. “I’d always been interested in food and trained as a junior chef at the School of Culinary and Finishing Arts

(SCAFA),” she said. “But now I have to really think about everything I eat, and I want to share that thinking with other kids and help them make healthier choices.” Bella has been leading healthy eating presentations in 15 schools across Dubai and Sharjah, reaching 9,000 pupils so far. She already has an active following on social media, where the Al Islami Kids’ Club has its own Facebook page for recipes, health tips, cookery videos and competitions to get children engaged with the programme. Alisha Haque, co-owner and Marketing Director of SCAFA, is enthusiastic about the initiative. “SCAFA is delighted to support the Al Islami Kids’ Club,” she said. “There is a real need for someone to take the lead in promoting healthier food choices in the UAE, especially among children, and the Al Islami Kids’ Club is a great way of getting the message across.” The club aims to encourage good eating habits by making the preparation of healthy food a fun activity for children and an easy option for parents. This is supported by the findings of the American Society of Nutrition that children are more likely to eat foods that are familiar to them, that coercive parents can have a negative impact on children’s eating habits, and that preparing meals at home is a good way to ensure healthy eating.
