Status symbol of sustainability Crows take over garbage duty Puy du fou, a historic national park situated in France recently appointed crows to pick up trash. Reportedly 6 crows under the names of Boubou, Bamboo, Bill, Black, Bricole and Baco work 4 days a week picking up and disposing trash. They are rewarded by receiving food after completing the task successfully. The concept was initiated by Christophe Gaborit, a park falconer claimed that the crows were initially trained to pick up roses and deliver them. This inspired him to train the crows to alternatively pick up trash instead. This unique task is expected to motivate humans to become more environmentally conscious

Boys vow to be heroes after being rescued Witnessed across the world, the 12 boys who were rescued after being trapped for 18 days in a cave have vowed to take over the roles of their heroes in the future. The football team trapped in the dire situation were eventually found by a British navy seal on the 9th day of their confinement. The boys and their coach were surprised to discover that a navy seal had come to their rescue and was gratified by his actions. The wild boards soccer team even shared snippets of how they were aided both mentally and physically by eating food and playing board games in order to stay strong for their complex rescue task. The death of the brave navy seal along with the other seals who came to their rescue have inspired few of the boys to become navy seals when they grow up.

A TRIP TO THE

DUBAI MUSEUM By Anamika Sunil

In the middle of the lively urban streets, right by the creek, is the traditional architectural museum which captures the fascinating Arabian culture and history of Dubai. Beaming through the walls of the museum is the forgone history exhibited through the means of various blueprints and recreational displays.

In another portion of the fort, the wax statues in the different displays illustrated the functioning of the local markets. At that point of time, people sold fish, pearls, aromatic spices, utensils, hand sown baskets and other trinkets. Scenes of the social life from the past are also displayed to highlight the transformation to the current contemporary society of Dubai.

The museum is split into various portions that exhibit each significant element of the old Dubai. One of the sections starts with a screen display of the traditional tribal dance known as the ‘Ayala dancing’ where the dancers face each other to indicate unity. Then the section continues to exhibit the traditional musical instruments. This is then followed by a weaponry display which also show how the local blacksmiths melded weapons from daggers to cannons. ISSUE 45 -KIDZ.BLOG! 15

S P I 5 T LEARNING

G N I K A TO M N U F D N A Y EAS By Pramod Nair

A brand new academic year is an opportunity for learning new things. It is an occasion of switching back to busy study schedules, hectic school days, serious home work hours and learning after a relaxed and lazy summer vacation. Here are some simple tips that you can follow to make learning an enjoyable experience.

Connect effectively with the topic you are learning using more activities and projects Without the right amount of motivation and curiosity, study hours can turn pretty boring and tiresome for students. Make studying an exciting process by adding more fun filled activities to your learning routine. You can seek the help from your parents and teachers to find more reading materials and project ideas related to the topic you are learning.

16

Make mental pictures of topics you are learning You can make the foundations about a subject you are learning solid in your mind by making imaginative mental notes and mental pictures about the various key points related to the topic. These mental pictures will help your brain to connect more effectively with a topic and will help you in studying the subject with more clarity.

Study notes are efficient learning tools Making study notes by writing down key points about the subject you are studying is an effective method to make learning an easy process. Writing down summary notes two or three times, while repeated learning will help you to imprint the key points to your brain effectively.

Recharge your memory using power breaks between study schedules Taking a 10 minute power break between study sessions can help your mind to stay focused and sharp. Activities like meditation, taking a walk in fresh air or sitting in the outdoor can help your mind to relax and will allow you to absorb your topics more efficiently.

Refresh your memory periodically using talk aloud learning sessions You can further cement the facts right about difficult topics by preparing small summary notes, and then reading out those notes loudly during your free time or lunch hours. This will make your mind absorb the facts well and make you remember difficult topics with ease.

When I grow up... I would like to be… By Cinta Gibbins

18

Who would you like to be when you grow up? A Pilot, a doctor, an actor, or perhaps you are still undecided? The concept of choosing a career path can be nerve wrecking, but with the right mind set, your experience can be full of excitement and adventure. Just take a deep breath and envision yourself as an invincible hero on a mission to discover his/her ultimate purpose.

Are you ready? Let’s begin with these simple steps:

1. Identify the your interests and hobbies What do you like to do? Drawing, writing, taking care of animals? Whatever it may be, hobbies give us great clues on what we may be talented in.

4. Experiment There is nothing as exciting as placing yourself in the shoes of whom you want to become. For example, if you want to be a painter, get all the equipment you need and start painting as if you were Leonardo Da Vinci, or your favourite painter. You do not have to try just one thing; dive in to all your hobbies and harness each gift you’ve got.

2. Seek advice from an adult After identifying your interests, seek advice from an adult; it could be your parents or your teacher. This will allow them to support and guide you in the right direction in terms of harnessing your talents and gifts.

3. Get adventurous Start researching people on the field you are interested in or just the industry itself. This will allow you to have a better understanding of what is required in following your chosen path. For example, if you want to become a doctor, research the requirements needed for qualification such as school subjects, medical schools, grades required etc.

5. Get a mentor Once you are settled on your interests, get an expert in the field you are interested. For example, if you want to be an actor, you can get an acting coach to help you sharpen your skill. A mentor is simply someone you can trust to advice you and lead you in the right direction. So choose wisely.

And just an additional tip, never ever give up. There is no such thing as failure, only lessons. So my dear reader, go be the hero of your own story and don’t forget to have fun. ISSUE 45 -KIDZ.BLOG! 19

Malala: The journey of a f a f fearless girl earless girl By Anamika Sunil

20

Malala Yousafzai who hails from Mingora, Pakistan, was born and raised from a culture where the birth of a girl is not usually celebrated. Nevertheless, Ziauddin Yousafzai beamed with joy as he and wife Toor Pekai Yousafzai welcomed their baby girl into the world. Today, Malala’s voice illustrates the significance of a progressive young girl questioning humanity about the human rights. Yester-years folk hero, Present years progressive Malala’s name was derived from the name of the national folk hero ‘Malalai of Maiwand.’ Malalai’s folktale is about a young heroic girl who reportedly on her wedding day, was aiding wounded Afghan soldiers in the war against the British Indian forces in Afghanistan. As the Afghan army was on the brink of losing hope, Malalai stepped in and proclaimed, “Young love! If you do not fall in the battle of Maiwand, By God, someone is saving you as a symbol of shame!” This statement was known to boost the army’s morale. Even though the young hero Malalai died in the same war, Afghan gained its victory, and they believe that it was due to Malalai’s courage. Malala and Malalai not only have common names, but their stories have something similar, their determination to battle. Malala Yousafzai’s dreams crumbled as she had to bid goodbye to school

for a while with no reassurance of returning to study whatsoever. Malala, at the time, was 12, fighting against Taliban’s strict reinforcements against young girls receiving education in Swat valley. Ziauddin Yousafzai, her father, was also a young teacher at the same school who immensely supported Malala’s courage to step forward and battle for her rights. Malala used this opportunity to voice her opinions about the journey of many young girls just like her who had to withdraw from schools. Over the next few years, Malala did return to school; however, safety was unprecedented. From writing for a blog under a pseudonym for BBC reflecting on the frightening experience of Taliban’s presence(in a documentary on The New York Times), the young heroine appeared on a national Pakistani television channel to speak out against Taliban to viewers estimated to be over 25 million. This lead to the infamous incident where a man representing the terror group stepped onto her school bus one day asked,” Who is Malala?” and shot her!

Every journey has a silver lining After a tireless amount of surgeries and medical procedures, Malala woke up in a hospital in Birmingham 10 days later; this time millions of people around the world yearning for justice against the unfortunate incident. Malala’s incident sparked a conversation and the interest flooded in as the majority started to question, ‘Can a girl be safe anymore while receiving basic education?’

Throughout the process of rehabilitation and settling into her new home in the United Kingdom, Malala discovered her purpose in this world.

“It was then I knew I had a choice: I could live a quiet life or I could make the most of this new life I had been given. I determined to continue my fight until every girl could go to school.”- Malala Shifting the gear “And every day I fight to ensure all girls receive 12 years of free, safe, quality education.” Malala established the Malala Fund “A charity dedicated to giving every girl an opportunity to achieve a future she chooses.” Her tireless effort and use of time and resource towards many children like her who are stripped away from fundamental rights, marked a day in history; Malala became the youngest Nobel peace prize laureate in December 2014. Today, the young heroine relentlessly travels around the world, captures and understands the issues young people face such as gender discrimination, poverty and child marriage; ensuring to call out injustices and holding out those who are accountable for relinquishing such issues. Currently, she is attending classes at Oxford University and is studying philosophy, politics, and economics. Malala now 21 is still fighting against all the odds.

Back-to-school Hair Lookbook By Anamika Sunil

Every morning, the most complicated task while prepping for school was deciding on how to style my hair. I used to get bored by the same dull and lifeless look. The current summer trend is all about playing with texturized hair; which is why I have compiled a lookbook that you can refer for inspiration. These styles are smooth and effortless to re-create. Beat the summer heat while donning these styles that are perfect for back to school.

THE TOUSLED WAVY PONYTAIL Speaking of ponytails, this look couldn’t get more effortless. The tousled wavy ponytail was my go-to school look. Simply pull back and tie your hair in a ponytail, followed by curling the ends to get a tousled yet effortless look.

THE CURLY WURLY UPDO The half updo is quite a fashionable statement at the moment. The vibe it gives is pretty smart, effortless and casual all at the same time. This hairstyle only requires a simple twist into a bun on the top part of your hair and then leave the rest of your curls flowing. You can play with some accessories like bandanas and cute clips to add to the glam.

Cry For Help:

The catastrophic rise of

OCEAN NOISE By Anamika Sunil

As every individual freely converses about their daily endeavors, a sea creature struggles to communicate with its peers, and that is where the problem starts. Today you will learn about ocean noise and why it is crucial to navigate ourselves through this issue.

The Aftermath ?

What is ocean noise?

Marine Sight Insight:

The National Ocean Service of America, defines it as “Sounds made by human activities that can interfere with or obscure the ability of marine animals to hear natural sounds in the ocean.” These human activities can range from seismic surveying which is procuring detailed images of geology to discover location and size of possible oil and gas reservoirs as well as the use of ships. This is the catalyst that encourages noise pollution which interferes with the communication between sea creatures. These unique sea organisms interact with each other by producing distinct sounds, whereas some varieties through the means of body language. As the ocean gets deeper, darkness succumbs the surroundings and light cannot travel anymore. However, sound can quickly travel through this medium hence serving as a useful means of communication.

26

Dislocation and death. It is that simple! Sea creatures facing harsh conditions and death would eventually affect our ecosystem. The good news is that after being exposed to this severe issue, several organizations around the world are working towards reducing the use of ships as well as other significant causes of ocean noise. Let’s spread the conversation and work towards protecting mother nature.

“Mass stranding of giant squids in coastal areas of Spain between 2001 and 2003 showed how grave the implications of noise pollution in marine life could be.”

BIOMES

OF THE WORLD By Pramod Nair

A biome is a specific geographic region on our planet, which supports similar types of vegetation and wildlife, and has similar climatic conditions. Major ecological community types like tropical rain forests, deserts and grasslands can be called as biomes, and they are occupied by plants and animals specifically suited to their survival in that region. This classification allows us to study and talk about similar geographic zones even when they are geographically spread apart across the globe. The plants and animals living within a biome are part of a complex and interconnected community. These animals and plants adopt special adaptations to survive in the specific conditions that are native to their biome like the climate, temperature, type of soil, the amount of water and light. Fundamentally, all the Earth’s biomes can be classified into terrestrial biomes and aquatic biomes. The terrestrial or land biomes cover about 29% of the Earth’s surface and the rest is comprised of aquatic biomes. The difference between a biome and an ecosystem A biome differs from both ecosystems and habitats. A habitat is the ecological area that is inhabited by a specific organism. It is the place where a particular specie of animal, plant or any other organism lives and thrives. An ecosystem is made up of all the living things in an area and their interactions, both between themselves and their surrounding non-living environment. An ecosystem is a complex functional system, whereas a biome is a specific geographical region defined by the species that it populates. A biome can contain multiple types of ecosystems and a variety of habitats. Terrestrial Biomes or Land Biomes Some of the major land biomes on our planet are: Tropical Rain Forest Tropical rain forests, which are located, near the equator in Central and South America and Africa, have no dry season and they are warm and wet all year around. They receive an average monthly precipitation of at least 60 mm, which is the highest

28

of all biomes. The life in this biome is so abundant that at least half of the world’s plant and animal species make tropical rain forests their home. The vegetation here mainly consists of tall broadleaf trees, vines and evergreen plants, which create a dense canopy over the forest. The vegetation is so dense that the amount of sunlight that reaches the forest floor is very limited. Temperate Deciduous Forests The temperate forests flourish in moderate climates and they have distinct seasons. Located in Eastern United States, East Asia and Europe these forests are populated by deciduous trees like maple, oak and beech, which shed their leaves in autumn. These forests have four distinct seasons and the plants and animals that live here are adapted to survive the cold winters and warm summers. Boreal Forests Boreal forests are also known as snow forests or Taiga and are located across northern Europe, Siberia, United States and Canada. This

biome consists mainly of coniferous trees like pine, spruces and firs, which are capable of enduring long, cold winters and short summers. These conical shaped trees have distinctive needle shaped leaves, which allow the trees to minimize water loss due to transpiration, and have shallow roots that help them in surviving in the thin soil of boreal forests. The animals in the taiga survive the harsh winters by either migrating to warm locations or by undergoing hibernation. Temperate Grasslands Temperate grasslands are vast continuous areas of mostly grass covered terrain with cool winters and hot summers and they receive an average yearly rainfall of about 900 mm. The lack of abundance in rain restricts the growth of large trees in this biome. The grasses found in this biome varies in height from 7 feet to 20 -25 cm. Grasslands are found on all continents on our planet, except Antarctica. The prairies of North America, the steppes of Central Eurasia, the pampas of South America are some of the examples for temperate

grasslands. Grasslands support a rich variety of grazing and burrowing animals. The rich soil of the grassland and the availability of grass make this biome an excellent choice for agriculture and cattle raising. Savanna Savannas – also known as tropical grasslands – are vast grasslands, scattered with trees and shrubs, and they remain warm throughout the year. They are found mainly in Africa and they have long dry seasons followed by short rainy periods. They

are home to large herds of grazing animals like zebra and giraffe, and for the large predators like lions and hyenas. The trees are specially adapted to prevent water loss, which contributes to their survival in the harsh dry conditions. Tundra These are vast frozen treeless plains that support short grass, lichens and moss like plants. The extreme cold climate combined with the permafrost - a thick layer of frozen soil, rock or sediment that lies just below the surface – that prevents the roots of trees from penetrating the soil, makes the tundra almost devoid of trees. The two types of tundra are Arctic tundra - occurring north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle - and Alpine tundra - occurring at high altitudes above the tree line on mountains.

Temperatures in this biome can drop as low as -30° F during winter. The Arctic tundra supports a rich variety of plant and animal life. Polar bears, lemmings, caribous are some of the common animals found in this biome and all these animals are specially adapted to survive the harsh coldness of this terrain. Desert Deserts are barren tracts of lands that receive less than 25 cm of rainfall on an average each year. They are one of the harshest of biomes and have

extreme temperature variations during day and night. Deserts are found on all the continents except Europe. Only a few plants and animals specially adapted to survive the harsh conditions of desert like extreme temperatures and scarcity of water thrive in this biome. Adaptations like long and wide-spreading roots for absorbing moisture from large areas, short and spiny leaves to reduce water loss, leaves and stems with special tissues for storing water can be found on desert plants like cacti. Aquatic Biomes As water covers almost 71% of our planet, the aquatic biome can be considered as the largest biome on Earth. The aquatic biome can be divided into two regions, marine and freshwater biomes.

Marine Biomes The marine biome consists of the oceans of the world along with coral reefs and estuaries. This biome supports a wide range of life spread across a variety of habitats like beaches to the darkest depths of the oceans and they are all adapted to the high levels of salt found in the waters of the marine biome. Marine biomes play a major influence on the terrestrial climate of Earth and the marine algae found in this biome supplies most of the world’s oxygen. The ocean is divided into three

vertical zones based on the depth and each of these zones have living beings specially adapted to the temperature and availability of light in the zone. The warm shallow waters of a coral reef is home to a wide variety of life. Coral reefs form at about 45 m deep and they occur in a variety of forms as fringing reefs, barrier reefs and atolls. Freshwater Biomes The lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and wetlands make up the freshwater biome. The concentration of salt in the waters of this biome is very low. Plants and algae are the main suppliers of oxygen in the freshwater biomes through photosynthesis and they also provide food for animals living in this biome.

PAST Around late 90s, scientific research papers concluded that Chocolate was highly addictive! In fact, it was believed that the sugar content in chocolate increases hyperactivity among children.

Did you know? Caffeine in a one-ounce piece of chocolate is almost as much as caf-feine found in a cup of decaf coffee.

Did you know? Dark chocolate has a higher quantity of flavonoids, eating 1 or 2 ounces of dark chocolate can reduce blood pressure.

PRESENT Present studies reveal that chocolate possess nutrients known as “flavonoids” that were discovered in cocoa beans. Flavonoids carry these antioxidant properties that improves cognitive abilities (connected to your thinking process) and cardio vascular activities (connected to your heart) . The term ‘chocolate’ was loosely associated to the studies regarding health benefits, and soon enough, chocolate was considered as a healthy product. However, most of the chocolates lose all their health benefits as they undergo harsh production process making them lose all the ‘flavonoids’. This ex-cessive amount of processing causes chocolates to be extremely high in sugar, fat and calories for example, milk chocolate. So the next time if you catch yourself indulging in a chocolate bar you might want to think twice. ISSUE 45 -KIDZ.BLOG! 33

Revisiting an old friend:

CHRISTOPHER ROBIN By Anamika Sunil

In the figment of our imagination, most us of have inscribed an imaginary friend; one who understands us mind to mind and heart to heart. In our head we create these intricate details for our imaginary friend, be it a horse, bear or a human with attributes that goes beyond our imaginative boundaries. Similarly, in the 100 acre woods, awaits the imaginary gang, Pooh and his friends who eagerly wait to reunite with their buddy Christopher Robin (played by Ewan McGregor). Directed by Marc foster, the movies concept was generated based on the real Christopher Robin Milne who was the protagonist in his father’s book Winnie the pooh. The fictional flick explores the reality and imaginary side of Christopher Robin

as an adult who currently resides in London. In fact, we get a glimpse of young Christopher Robin bidding his farewell to pooh and the gang as he leaves for boarding school. After leaving for boarding school, Christopher Robin’s life goes on as a blur as he marries Evelyn (played by Hayley Atwell) and has a kid named Madeline (Bronte Carmichael). After serving in World War 2, Christopher works as an efficiency specialist for a luggage company. During this period of being miserable with his work life, whereby he also prefers to disconnect with his family who wishes to move away from London, Pooh (voiced by Jim Cummings) comes knocking on the door filled with expectations and joy to reconnect with his old friend. However, Christopher is not exactly thrilled.

As the story continues, he softens to the gang. The gloomy tones in the movie tends to give a slightly dreary feeling which was certainly not expected from a joyous tale that includes Winnie the Pooh. However, the movie picks up as Christopher rekindles his imaginary relationship which tends to mend his broken heart. Pooh’s gang without doubt serves some refreshing anecdotes that are bound to make you giggle. In addition, the animation of the movie is quite unique as all the characters fades into the cinematography really well. Overall, the movie is perfect for abandoning all the stress in your mind and creates a chance to usher in your imaginary thoughts.

ULTIMATE GUIDE TO IMPROVE YOUR

Child’s Reading Habits By Pramod Nair

“A well-composed book is a magic carpet on which we are wafted to a world that we cannot enter in any other way.” - Caroline Gordon, an American novelist & literary critic, who was the recipient of two prestigious literary awards, the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1932 and O. Henry Award in 1934. Reading is an important skill that children should acquire as it can positively influence their performance, imagination and overall development. Frederick Douglass, the great African-American social reformer and writer observed, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free “. Reading can open doors of imagination and new worlds for a child and can be an asset in each developmental step.

Health benefit of reading: 1. Reduce stress & allows one to relax

One of the major health benefits of a positive reading habit is its ability to reduce stress. Both young and adult readers can gain immensely from reading as it can ease mental strain and induce relaxation. The imaginative world that opens in front of a reader while immersed in a book, can magically wipe out worries, tensions and stress.

2. Sharpen a child’s brain & improve memory

Reading can help your child’s brain to get enough exercise. It provides mental stimulation for the brain, which will help it to be more active and sharp. It also improves the memory and attention span in the reader and enhances the power of imagination.

46

3. Improve concentration

Reading allows the mind to stay focused and it can improve concentration in both young and adult readers. It helps the reader to organize their thoughts and engage them in a streamlined manner.

4. Improve sleeping

Reading is a perfect solution to organize and calm one’s mind before sleeping. It allows the mind and body to relax and can result in peaceful sleeping.

5. Improve life skills and promotes compassion

Getting immersed in a variety of books can help your child develop an open mind, a curiosity towards learning, acceptance of different opinions and better understanding of other people. It prepares a child’s mind to be empathetic towards differing opinions in life and always maintain a positive outlook towards life. It also teaches young minds about life lessons.

6. Improve communication skills

Apart from providing knowledge, reading can also improve the communication skills in a young reader. It helps the reader increase their vocabulary and develop verbal skills.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD TO

improve their reading habit? ‘There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Let’s discuss some of the ways in which you can give a boost to the reading habit of your kids and teach them to love books right from a very young age.

1. Start reading to them early

Reading together with your child is a great way in which a parent can share the message of the fun associated with reading. The most amazing thing about reading to your children is the fact that you can start this at a very early stage, even while your they are still new-borns. According to children’s author Emilie Buchwald, “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.”. Reading together with your kid also strengthens the bond between you two and also improves reading and communication skills in your child. Instead of making reading a routine chore, improvise fun activities that will keep your child engaged.

2. Make reading an enjoyable experience

Most kids hate reading because it feels like a chore to them. From early stages, parents can help in making reading sessions enjoyable by converting them into interactive, funfilled activities. Encourage your child to use their imagination and narrate stories to you based on books that they read. Having family discussions, games and watching movies based on the books that they read will help your children in making reading enjoyable.

3. Inspire them to read by picking up reading yourself

Children observe everything with a keen eye. They can get influenced by habits and mannerisms that they observe in their parents. By seeing a parent reading and enjoying a book, a child can catch the excitement and learn the values of reading. Let your child see you read as much as possible – be it a book, newspaper or any other reading material.

4. Visit libraries with your kids

You can help your kids in exploring and discovering a whole world of new books and authors by making family trips to libraries and book fairs. A library is a great place to see and explore a wide selection of books associated with a range of topics. When children start to interact with the wide choice of library books on a regular basis it will help them in identifying the extensive possibilities of reading. In addition, watching other children enjoying books at a library can motivate them.

5. Make special zones at home

reading

A special comfort zone dedicated

to reading – be it a favourite chair, a comfortable bean bag, a comfy corner of your home, or even an outdoor garden bench – will help your children in identifying and associating reading with relaxation and comfort. A reading zone can be created from any place in your home with comfortable seating, fresh air and good lighting. Apart from these points, having constant interaction with your children regarding the books that they read can also improve their reading experience and reading habits. Conducting healthy discussions on the books that they read, involving the whole family, can improve their communication skills and expand their thinking capabilities

Stress Free

Back to School Tips By Pramod Nair

The occasion of schools reopening after the summer break is a time of anxiety and excitement for both parents and children. Back to school marks the beginning of early school hours, serious study time, homework routines and early sleeping schedules. This transition period from vacation days to school time can raise the stress levels within a family. Here are some simple ‘Back To School’ tips that will help you make the transition from summer break to school days smooth and tension free.

Get your family into a school routine in advance Introduce your family - especially if you have young students – to the school schedule at least a few days before the actual school opening day. You can avoid the first day of school chaos and confusion in the family by practicing the school days routine. In the last few days of the vacation, wake your kids early and take them through the early breakfast, bathing and dressing schedules, which will help both you and your kids to have a smooth transition.

48

Introduce them to a healthy and solid breakfast routine To get your kids to adjust to the stress and energy requirements of a hectic school schedule, introduce them to a protein rich breakfast routine. A rich and healthy breakfast will help your kids to have a solid and bright start to their school day. Set the wake up time of in such a way that ample time for a relaxed breakfast is included. Make conversations with your kids about the upcoming school days Let your children relax in the last few days of the summer vacation by having pleasant thoughts about school opening. Avoid having rigorous cramming sessions or review sessions about the previous academic year topics as it can add to their anxiety levels and can cause stress. You can help them look eagerly towards school opening by having exciting conversations about the upcoming school days and the new things that they will learn. Have a special ‘back to school’ shopping trip with your kids Plan ahead and find out about the school supplies that your kids will need for the brand new academic year. Get your children to take part in the school supplies shopping and make it an exciting event. Also, having the shopping done well in advance before school opens helps you avoid last minute confusion and stress.

If your kid is moving to a new school, then it is wise for you to get familiar with the school environment and facilities in advance. You can do this through orientational programs offered or by visiting the official school website and social media pages to gather information. It is also wise to get introduced to your child’s class teacher in advance and get acquainted with some of the other parents in your kid’s class. Once school begins, invest at least a few minutes every day to have a conversation with your kid about their day at school. This will allow your child open up about their school experiences.
